Grand Duchesses Marie Adelaide & Charlotte of Luxembourg.
It was on January 15th [1919] at four o'clock of a foggy, melancholy afternoon that the Grand Duchess Charlotte was formally sworn in at Colmar-Berg as ruler of Luxembourg. Across her breast was the broad orange ribbon of the House of Nassau. She was weeping. Marie Adelaide, dry eyed, with a restrained tenderness said to her, taking her hand: 'Poor Lotty. Forgive me for having put so heavy a burden upon you.'

Who: Grand Duchess Charlotte Role: Grand Duchess of Luxembourg Allegiance: Neutral
Like many countries, Luxembourg opted for neutrality as the war kicked off but faced a difficult choice in 1940 when they were invaded. Charlotte initially didn't want to leave but she was reminded of her sister Marie-Adelaide who had stayed in Luxembourg during the first World War and had not actively resisted, leading to a public perception she had collaborated with the Germans and her eventual abdication. She agreed to flee Luxembourg, refused a Nazi partnership arrangement, and eventually settled in the UK. While there she, like many other royal evacuees, broadcast to her citizens back home through BBC radio and became a rallying point for her country's resistance. During trips to visit her children in Canada she also travelled extensively across the US to campaign for the country's support, earning the nickname the "propagandist in pearls." While she lived in relative safety in the UK, her connection to the war effort was deeply personal. Her son Jean served in the British Army's Irish Guards while her sister was sent to a concentration camp due to her German husband's long standing and vocal opposition to Hitler. Luxembourg was eventually liberated between 1944 and 1945, and Charlotte was at the centre of driving forward reconstruction efforts and international diplomacy, earning her huge popularity amongst the people.

Except that women have equal rights to the throne of Luxembourg, thus Alexandra and Amalia are ahead of their younger brothers in the line of succession. Luxembourg had female Grand Duchesses, Marie Adelaide and Charlotte, from 1912 until 1964. And Prince Rainier considered changing the succession rules, because he thought Caroline was more suitable for the job than Albert lol.
“unlike other royal families (like SRF, BRF), the ruling families of luxembourg, liechtenstein and monaco are not come-and-go families. they are still running the same countries that their ancestors ruled so it is understandable for them to only have male line succession. to them their family is important. those countries literally have their families in laws (unlike britain where succession is done by gov.)” - Submitted by Anonymous

Marie Anne of Portugal, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, with her six daughters: Marie Adelaide, Charlotte, Hilda, Antonia, Elisabeth, and Sophie.
The two eldest, first Marie Adelaide and then her younger sister Charlotte, would both become reigning Grand Duchesses after the death of their father, William IV. Marie Adelaide would be the first female monarch of Luxembourg since Maria Theresa in the 18th Century, and the first monarch to be born in Luxembourg since John of Bohemia in the late 13th century.

OTMAA Contemporaries: the six princesses of Luxembourg [bigger].
In the early 1900s, Luxembourg faced a similar succession crisis as their Russian counterparts did, except that Nicholas and Alexandra finally got their male heir with Alexei in 1904, and the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg never did. They had six children, all girls. So in 1907, Grand Duke William IV named his eldest daughter heiress presumptive. Marie-Adelaide, b. 1894, was a year older than Olga Nikolaevna, and was Grand Duchess from 1912-1919, when she abdicated in favor of her sister, Charlotte, b. 1896, who was one year younger than Olga Nikolaevna. Next was Hilda, born 1897, the same year as Tatiana Nikolaevna, followed by Antonia, 1899, the same year as Maria Nikolaevna; Elisabeth, 1901, the same as Anastasia Nikolaevna, and finally Sophie, born 1902.
