Royal Tiara Challenge 2024: Favourite Luxembourg Tiara
Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde’s Sapphire Tiara
For me, the Luxembourg collection contains the same tiara but with different gemstones, tiaras that do not look good on anyone, a few good pieces and this beauty! Similar to the Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik, this tiara looks great on everyone. Passing from Grand Duchess to Grand Duchess, the tiara is currently owned by Maria Teresa and was last worn by her daughter-in-law Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie for a reception in January.

Royal Tiaras Highlights: Luxembourg Vine Leaves Tiara
The tiara was made in the second half of the nineteenth century, but it’s not known which jeweler created the piece, for whom or when the family purchased it. Grand Duchess Charlotte - the grandmother of the current duke - never wore the tiara herself, and her daughter-in-law apparently only wore it once. All of Charlotte’s daughters wore the tiara at their weddings though, Princess Alix in 1950, Princess Marie Gabrielle in 1951, Princess Elisabeth in 1956, and Princess Marie-Adélaïde in 1958. The tradition was followed by Princess Claire, who wore the piece for her own royal wedding to Prince Felix, in September 2013.

You did least favourite tiara, what about favourite tiaras?
Great idea! I think I'll prick my favourite tiaras from each country, and no commentary just so that this post doesn't ramble forever and ever. Just know that these are the ones that I like for either aesthetic or historical purposes. I'd say the best collections go to the British, Swedish, and Spanish in that order. Out of the fake monarchies Greece has some bangers in there:
Belgium 🇧🇪 - Queen Astrid of Belgium's Nine Provinces Tiara (as a bandeau)
Brunei 🇧🇳 - Anisha Isa Kalebic's Diamond Tiara
Denmark 🇩🇰 - Princess Louise of the Netherlands' Pearl Poiré Tiara
Egypt 🇪 - Queen Nazli of Egypt’s Diamond Tiara
France 🇫🇷 - Empress Josephine’s Cameo Tiara (it's in the Swedish vault but it's French in every other way)
Germany 🇩🇪 - The Prussian tiara (it's of German origin but is currently with the Spanish due to royal intermarrying)
Greece 🇬🇷 - Khedive of Egypt Tiara
Italy 🇮🇹 - Queen Margherita of Italy's Pearl & Diamond Tiara
Iran 🇮🇷 - Empress Farah of Iran’s Turquoise Tiara
Japan 🇯🇵 - Imperial Chrysanthemum Tiara
Jordan 🇯🇴 - Queen Noor's Sunburst Tiara
Lesotho 🇱🇸 - 'Masenate Mohato Seeiso's wedding tiara
Liechtenstein 🇱🇮 - Princess Maria Kinsky's Honeysuckle Tiara
Luxembourg 🇱🇺 - Grand Duchess Marie Adélaïde of Luxembourg's Sapphire Tiara
Monaco 🇲🇨 - Princess Charlotte of Monaco’s Pearl Drop Tiara
The Netherlands 🇳🇱 - Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands's Stuart Diamond Tiara
Norway 🇳🇴 - Princess Ingeborg of Sweden's Pearl Circle Tiara
Russia 🇷🇺 - Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara (of Russian origin but is with the Brits)
Spain 🇪🇸 - Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain's Fleur de Lys Tiara
Sweden 🇸🇪 - Nine-Prong Tiara
United Kingdom 🇬🇧 - Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara
BONUS - The Greville Emerald Kokoshnik 🇬🇧
BONUS - The Swedish Aquamarine Kokoshnik 🇸🇪
BONUS - Queen Desiree of Sweden’s Ruby Parure Tiara 🇩🇰

Marie-Adélaïde (14 June 1894 – 24 January 1924), reigned as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg from 1912 until her abdication in 1919. She was the first Grand Duchess regnant of Luxembourg, its first female monarch since Duchess Maria Theresa (1740–1780, who was also Austrian Archduchess and Holy Roman Empress) and the first Luxembourgish monarch to be born within the territory since Count John the Blind (1296–1346).
Named as heir presumptive by her father Grand Duke William IV in 1907 to prevent a succession crisis due to his lack of a son, Marie-Adélaïde became Grand Duchess in 1912. She ruled through the First World War, and her perceived support for the German occupation forces led to great unpopularity in Luxembourg as well as neighbouring France and Belgium. In 1919, on the advice of Parliament and after enormous pressure from the Luxembourgish people, she abdicated on 14 January 1919 in favour of her younger sister Charlotte who managed to save the monarchy and the dynasty in a national referendum (28 September 1919).
After abdicating, Marie-Adélaïde retired in a monastery in Italy, before leaving due to ill health. She died of influenza in Germany on 24 January 1924, at the age of 29.

Possible Names for the Grand Ducal Baby
I’ve been waiting for this day for so long you guys, the sound I made this morning when I saw the news was kind of embarrassing.
Since the Hereditary Grand Ducal couple of Luxembourg have announced that they’re expecting their first child, I thought I’d share my thoughts and predictions on what name(s) they will choose for their child. This is obviously pure conjecture, but here we go.
Also, this is under a cut because it’s really long.
Firstly, we are probably looking at a first name and three middle names, as this is the most common for most royal families, including the Grand Ducal Family. Both the Hereditary Grand Duke and the Hereditary Grand Duchess have four names. There are exceptions (the Grand Duke, Princess Alexandra, and Prince Noah all have six) and using only three has been common with younger royals in Luxembourg (Prince Félix and Princess Claire chose only three names for their son, Prince Liam) and in other families in recent years, but four is most likely.
Second, the child will be known as HRH Prince(ss) ______ of Luxembourg, Prince(ss) of Nassau, Prince(ss) de Bourbon de Parme.
Third, for reference: the Hereditary Grand Duke’s full name is Guillaume Jean Joseph Marie and the Hereditary Grand Duchess’s full name is Stephanie Marie Claudine Christine
Lastly, I have tried to refer to everyone by their title instead of just their name because the family likes to repeat names and that can get confusing when you’ve got so many Jeans and Guillaumes :)
Boys
Félix is the name of both Prince Félix de Bourbon de Parme (the Grand Duke's grandfather) and Prince Félix of Luxembourg (the Hereditary Grand Duke's brother); I wouldn’t consider it super likely as a first name but it’s not impossible. It could also be a middle name.
Guillaume would be an obvious choice to honor the Hereditary Grand Duke, but there have also been four Grand Dukes named Guillaume/William/Wilhelm in Luxembourg’s history, and Prince Guillaume, a brother of the Grand Duke, is the Hereditary Grand Duke’s godfather. Also, the Hereditary Grand Duke’s three brothers and the Grand Duke all have Guillaume as a middle name (and Princess Alexandra has Wilhelmine). I don’t think this will make it to the first name spot but it will almost certainly make an appearance as middle name.
Henri would honor the Grand Duke, and is one of the more likely choices for both a first name or a middle name. Prince Sébastien (the Hereditary Grand Duke’s youngest brother and godson) has Henri has a middle name, as does Prince Liam.
Jean is probably my top pick for a first name - in honor of Grand Duke Jean who passed away in April. It is also a middle name of the Hereditary Grand Duke, and the name of the youngest son of Prince Guillaume (Grand Duke Henri’s younger brother). I would consider it to be a very strong possibility for the first name, or if not then almost certainly as a middle name.
Marie is even more common a name in the family than Guillaume; since Grand Duchess Charlotte, every child of a Grand Duke or Grand Duchess has had Marie as a first or middle name, and the Hereditary Grand Duchess and all her siblings also have it (her sister Countess Isabelle has Myriam). I would honestly be shocked if it isn’t a middle name.
Philippe is the name of the baby’s other grandfather, Count Philippe de Lannoy, who passed away last January. This would be a clear sentimental choice and a lovely way to honor the Hereditary Grand Duchess’s father. This could be used as either a first name or a middle name, and I’d say it’s a pretty good possibility for either. It is, of course, the name of the current King of the Belgians (the Grand Duke’s first cousin).
Girls
Alexandra is the Hereditary Grand Duke’s sister and will possibly be a godmother to the child (as she is to Prince Gabriel and Princess Amalia). It could be used as either a first or middle name. I would consider it pretty likely at least as a middle name, considering how close Princess Alexandra is to her brothers.
Alix would be a beautiful tribute to the baby’s maternal grandmother, Countess Alix de Lannoy, who died very suddenly only two months before her daughter’s wedding. I would consider this a pretty good possibility for a first name and I would be surprised if it wasn’t at least a middle name. It is also the name of one of the Grand Duke’s aunts.
Charlotte is the name of a former Grand Duchess (the Grand Duke’s grandmother) and the only daughter of Prince Guillaume (the Grand Duke’s brother), as well as the second name of the Grand Duke’s mother, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte. The most famous royal Charlotte today is, of course, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. This is a possibility as a first name or as a middle name.
Marie is almost definite for a girl as well; it is also probably more likely as a middle name than as a first name but could be paired with another name (as in Marie-Adélaïde and Marie-Astrid). This would honor a very long-standing family tradition (and the current Grand Duchess), and I’ll be really surprised if it isn’t included.
Stéphanie would obviously honor the Hereditary Grand Duchess. Although it is probably unlikely as a first name, it could be used in one of the middle name spots. I wouldn’t consider it a very likely choice, but it is a possibility.
Thérèse is a nice choice to honor Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. Princess Amalia and Princess Alexandra have both Marie/Maria and Teresa as middle names, so it’s possible that the Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple will choose to do this as well. I think it is somewhat less likely for the first name, but a pretty good possibility for a middle name.
Wilhelmine is one of Princess Alexandra’s middle names, and is the feminine form of the Hereditary Grand Duke’s own name. Probably this wouldn’t be used as a first name, but it is a possibility for a middle name, considering the tradition of family members named Guillaume/Wilhelmine.
There are, obviously, a lot of other names in both the Grand Ducal and Lannoy families that could be chosen (Albert, Charles, Claudine, Christine, Gabrielle, Isabelle, Joseph, Joséphine, Leopold, Louis, Louise, Madeleine, Paul, Sébastien, and Thérèse just to name a few). The Hereditary Grand Duchess also has seven siblings, and lots of nieces and nephews, including an Alix, a Charlotte, and a Philippe; I’m not sure how those will affect their choice. And then, they could go the Sweden route and pick a name none of us are even considering ;)
My (semi-educated) guess is something like Jean Guillaume Marie Philippe or Henri Philippe Guillaume Marie for a boy, and Alix Marie Charlotte Wilhelmine or Alix Marie Thérèse Alexandra for a girl.

Tiara Recap: First half of 2024 - the Favourites
This is the second part of my recap of the first half of 2024 and today we have the Favourites. Please let me know your favourite tiara moment/outfit as well.
5. Queen Mary (Danish New Year’s Reception)
I love this look so much! It’s suitably dramatic for a New Year’s event with the velvet and the train. The dress is plain enough to not clash with the accessories but isn’t boring and it’s a gorgeous colour. I also love that Mary has adapted the Ruby Parure Tiara so it suits her perfectly.
4. Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie (Luxembourg New Year’s Reception)
Stéphanie looks absolutely ethereal! I love the flowers and the tulle, the entire look is so coordinated. Stéphanie is also wearing the Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde’s Sapphire Tiara which is my favourite Luxembourgish tiara and is definitely in my top 3 sapphire tiaras so of course I had to include it in this post.
3. Queen Mary (State Visit from Denmark to Sweden)
I know that a lot of people prefer the first iteration of this gown but I love this version! The colour of the lace matches the rubies of the tiara and Mary’s look is a nice contrast next to Queen Silvia’s looks as both women are wearing a gown with a lace top and satin skirt. Overall, Mary has been my favourite in terms of tiara outfits over the last six months and all four of her outfits are in my top 10.
2. Queen Máxima (State Visit from Spain to the Netherlands)
Absolutely stunning! The tiara, the gown and the sash all work together in perfect harmony to make Máxima even more gorgeous than she usually is. The pleating on the bodice is fabulous, the flow of the skirts is gorgeous and the brooch is perfectly sparkly without looking too overwhelming. I love it!
1. Queen Sonja (State Visit from Denmark to Norway)
I don’t know why this is my favourite outfit from the last six months but there’s just something about it. Sonja looks like she’s glowing, the draping of the gown is phenomenal, surprisingly the orange of the dress and the green of the jewellery coordinate really well. I slightly prefer the Norwegian Emerald Tiara over the Stuart which is why Queen Sonja has narrowly beaten Queen Máxima to the title of my favourite outfit from the first six months of 2024.
