OTMAA Contemporaries: the six princesses of Luxembourg [bigger].

In the early 1900s, Luxembourg faced a similar succession crisis as their Russian counterparts did, except that Nicholas and Alexandra finally got their male heir with Alexei in 1904, and the Grand Duke and Duchess of Luxembourg never did. They had six children, all girls. So in 1907, Grand Duke William IV named his eldest daughter heiress presumptive.  Marie-Adelaide, b. 1894, was a year older than Olga Nikolaevna, and was Grand Duchess from 1912-1919, when she abdicated in favor of her sister, Charlotte, b. 1896, who was one year younger than Olga Nikolaevna. Next was Hilda, born 1897, the same year as Tatiana Nikolaevna, followed by Antonia, 1899, the same year as Maria Nikolaevna; Elisabeth, 1901, the same as Anastasia Nikolaevna, and finally Sophie, born 1902.

The two eldest, first Marie Adelaide and then her younger sister Charlotte, would both become reigning Grand Duchesses after the death of their father, William IV. Marie Adelaide would be the first female monarch of Luxembourg since Maria Theresa in the 18th Century, and the first monarch to be born in Luxembourg since John of Bohemia in the late 13th century.

Hi! Me again! It's always about the six princesses of Luxembourg. I would like to know more information about their childhood? Do you know where I can find information about that? Also, are there any books in French about them?? Thanks!!!

Their childhood was kind of overshadowed by their father’s terminal illness. Marie Adelaide (who was Grand Duke Adolph’s special favorite; he called her “Maus,” and when he was very elderly and nearly blind, she would guide him to ensure that he didn’t trip) and possibly Charlotte, helped her mother to care for Grand Duke Guillaume. Marie Adelaide was painfully shy, so Charlotte often accompanied her official events, and it was generally said that Marie was more beautiful, but that Charlotte (known en famille as Lotti) was the charming one. Marie was not particularly devout as a child—that came later—but she did tell her mother that she would never marry, so she must not ask it of her. She loved the airy Edwardian fashions, too. Hilda was the fiery one. It was said that she inherited the Braganza temperament, and her playmates would say they must “do as Hilda does.” She was also considered somewhat clairvoyant (shortly before Marie Adelaide’s death, Hilda had a dream where there were only five sisters instead of six). Antonia, known to her family as Toni, was very intelligent and a talented musician. Elisabeth (Lissi, as they called her) was the sweet one—she once allowed a bee to sting her because she said it was better that it didn’t sting “poor Papa.” Her future husband, Prince Ludwig Philipp of Thurn und Taxis was the love of her life, and the couple’s displays of affection sometimes made Marie Adelaide a bit uncomfortable. Sophie’s parents called her “Little Portuguese” because she strongly resembled her mother’s side of the family, and as the youngest, she was probably doted on. A fortune teller accurately predicted that she would be the mother of three sons. All six sisters were very close to one another. Antonia and Sophie looked so much alike that their own children sometimes had difficulty telling them apart!

I don’t know of any French language books, but The Nassaus of Luxembourg has a chapter devoted to each sister, and it has a lot of information about their early lives.
