Most Anticipated New Book Releases for July 2024
Slim pickings for the releases that excited me for a July release this year. All the blurbs I was reading sounded like many books I’d read before, or failed to hook my interest. Is this happening to anyone else or are blurbologists losing their touch? ‘The Deading’ is the only novel I really want to add to my collection – horror and science fiction, my two favourite genres. I was hoping to add a…

A couple of weeks ago I asked about people’s favorite book or books they read this year. Between Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and discord, I have a list of 123 books in no particular order that my friends and family loved this year. If it was a series then I listed the first book. Each star is an additional recommendation. I haven’t read all of these, they may or may not reflect my personal opinions, though my favorite books are on the list too. The most recommended books were How Far The Light Reaches by Sabrina Imbler, one or all of the Murderbot books by Martha Wells, and Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, because if there’s one thing my friends have in common across platforms, it’s that you’re all nerds (affectionate). Enjoy, and I hope you find your new favorite book!

Read this month: September + October 2023
Tumblr media
After a depressing September, October was fantastic with 9 books read (and most of them highly enjoyable).
A. Schmachtl: Snöfried aus dem Wiesental #6 (audio)
M. Stiefvater: Mister Impossible
R. O'Brien: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH
L. Arnold: Dead Man in the Ditch (audio)
T. Kingisher: Thornhedge
S. Natsukawa: The Cat Who Saved Books
M. Stiefvater: Greywaren
J. M. Arlow: How to Excavate a Heart (ebook, library)
S. McGuire: Come Tumbling Down
R. Rowell + F.E. Hicks: Pumpkinheads (ebook, library)
L. Graham: Have I Told You This Already (audio)
I dove into all the short books and novellas I had accumulated on my tbr which was definitely the best decision. Finally felt like reading again. And I still managed to get to a few books that had been on my tbr for more than a year already.
As a bonus, I completed by reading goal and my listening goal for 2023. Only the pages goal remains and we will see how that goes.

Thoughts:
So, obviously the standout this month was Dracula - nothing could compare to reading this novel through Dracula Daily and the entire tumblr experience of it all. What an absolute treat.
This was a much better reading month than I remember it being. Although, I do remember absolutely loving Marmee. Little Women is my favorite book and hearing the story through the matriarch’s tender recollections was just lovely.
Also, if you haven’t read Olivia Atwater yet, make that a goal for next year. Longshadow has been my favorite read of hers so far, but they are all so comforting and cozy.
Goodreads Goal: 377/400 (this is a silly number - do not attempt this)

Another year, another 110 books read! I don’t love organizing books by genre because I feel like so many of the books I read are a mix of fantasy/horror/queer romance/mystery/etc, but I like to see how it all falls into place. I had started 2022 with the goal of reading more poetry but otherwise had no specific goal except to read whatever I wanted. There were some disappointments, some books I have been meaning to read forever, some new favorites, and some comfortable rereads of old favorites. Overall, a good year!

list in your status 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. don’t take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard. they do not have to be the ‘right’ books or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way. Reblog from @jessmcriano
1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell — I first read this during my first semester of college and it immediately became my safety blanket book. The ultimate introvert read.
2. Someday, Someday, Maybe by Lauren Graham — This book means so much to me and was my guiding light during young adulthood. The only novel I’ve ever read more than twice. I wrote about my experience with it for Book Riot in 2021.
3. The People We Keep by Allison Larkin — A remarkably beautiful story of found family and learning to feel at home in your own skin. An all-time favorite.
4. The Hours by Michael Cunningham — I only read this for the first time last year when I adopted a homeless, discarded first edition hardcover from my library. I studied Virginia Woolf a lot during my literature degrees and this book is simply a masterpiece. *chef’s kiss*
5. When You Call My Name by Tucker Shaw — I’ve read a lot of gay historical YA set during the AIDS crisis, but none have made me cry quite so much as this one.
6. I Miss You When I Blink by Mary Laura Philpott — An essay collection about coming to terms with the ugly imperfections of adult life and learning to be okay with not having all the answers.
7. Nobody Cares by Anne T. Donahue — Another essay collection about failure and growing up, and how nobody actually cares as much as we think they do.
8. Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia — A comfy cozy YA novel about fandom culture, mental health, and the highs and lows of being an artist.
9. Bad Kid by David Crabb — A memoir about growing up gay and goth in the ‘80s, with such a memorable and vivid cast of characters that feel like your best friends by the end. One of my all-time favorite queer books.
10. Last Night in Montreal by Emily St. John Mandel — The perfect quick, strange little story that gets under your skin and you finish in one sitting. If you’re looking to “reject BookTok culture and go to the library and get a weird little novel you’ve never heard of in your life and read it all in two days like God intended,” look no further.
