Fluffbruary #6: tie | embarrassment | dessert
Tumblr media
So, I know it's March, but I decided I'll continue with the prompts, anyway.
Harold and Grace, Before. (Also on AO3)
(Ramble + traditional version under the cut)
It was a struggle to be productive creatively, because I haven't been in a good mental/emotional space lately. But I wanna keep doing these prompts.
I used a reference for this, and I love the poses, but I couldn't seem to execute it properly. I even colored it with watercolor, despite knowing the paper doesn't take a lot of layers of colors very well.
Tumblr media
Despite the above's many flaws, and it was rushed, I like it better because I feel more "connected" to it (i.e., took a brush with watercolor paint to paper, I could see the pigment transfer to the paper, etc.). I dunno. I still need to get the hang of digital drawing even after all these years.

Random PoI ramblings
Grace, I’m sad to say, is not my favourite character either: because of the final, and “kill them all”, and uncomfortable meta-textual implications,
but most of all because her reappearance at the end of s3 is the exact moment where the portrayal of AI’s convenient omnipotence gets from fairy-tale to blatantly nonsensical .
Unless Samaritan’s test mode is capable of looking in the heart of a person IT CAN’T FIND in the first place, by what definition is Grace the closest person to Harold Finch? Harold Finch never had any – let alone recorded – contact with her!
I’m not writing a fix-it for this, ridiculous or otherwise, because, due to aforementioned meta-textual implications, I’m not touching Harold’s relationship with Grace with a ten-foot pole, but if we were to think about it anyway:
assuming John and Sameen don’t count because they are presumably dead, Root is Root and Will Ingram is out of range, the closest living person to Harold Finch would probably be Fusco :-D
That is, not counting anyone Harold Crane/Partridge/Cardinal/Whatever maintains regular contact with – but the show tends to forget a fake identity on that scale can’t only exist online. I love s2, but, gosh, “John Warren’s workplace”??? Don’t let me start on s4 “eye roll*

If I had the skills, I would draw an anthropomorphic version of the Machine as a little girl in 2004 tugging on Finch's jacket, pointing at Grace Hendricks, and saying, "Dad. Dad look. I found this woman. She's an artist and she's very nice. Dad look. Go talk to her. Dad!"

Finch: I don't know how to tell you this, but... I love you.
Grace: That's great, Harold. Especially considering the fact we've been engaged for 6 fucking years.
Root: How would you like your coffee?
Carter: As dark and as bitter as my soul.
Root, shouting to someone behind the counter: I need one vanilla latte with extra cream and sugar!
Fusco: Where are we going?
Shaw: To either get ice cream or commit a felony. I'll decide on the way.

sunflower for jeannie, dandelion for neutrino, and lavender & daisy for grace! :3c
Sunflower - What name(s) were you originally thinking of calling your OC?
None, surprisingly! She was always Jeanette, from the very start :3
Dandelion - Does your OC get overwhelmed easily?
She does not XD She gets laser-focused instead.
(She can BE overwhelming at times, tho)
Lavender - How does your OC cope with loud noises?
If it's just a one-off noise, she deals with it all right, but sustained or repetitive loud noises make her anxious and put her on-edge, which is not a great thing to be when you're an ODST who could kill a man with little real effort.
Daisy - What inspired you to create your OC?
....Well if I'm to be perfectly honest I wanted to write Halo smut and didn't have any OCs who could be put into that situation :B
So I conceptualized Grace.
And then she just yanked the proverbial reins out of my hands and went and did her own thing.

yes to all of this
we are completely suspending our disbelief - and what i love is that the show makes it very easy to do so because it presents the information as fact without ever letting on that it totally doesn’t make sense
love this show with all my heart
POI 02x21: Zero Day
Ok so 2 (two) people, @effervescent-mulder and @sameen-shaww , expressed interest in some thoughts on Zero Day. I didn’t take notes while watching and I’m not doing gifs because that takes more effort than I’m willing to put in at this point. But! For you two lovely folks and anyone else interested, here are some things about Zero Day.
The flashbacks! Omg! So much here.
1. The marriage proposal! I know logically that Harold did it away from their phones because he just didn’t want that conversation recorded, but it did cross my mind that maybe Harold thought the Machine would get jealous if it heard him propose to Grace.
2. The Harold & Nathan dynamic! I knew people shipped them but I didn’t get it. Now I get it. Still not my thing but I totally get it.
3. I am now DYING for the rest of Harold’s backstory!! Sedition and mayhem??? Using pseudonyms for so long that it’s not entirely a joke when Nathan asks if he remembers his real name???? Neeed moooaaarrrr.
There is much to be said (and probably it’s already been said, maybe in fic?) about Harold’s decision to call the cops on John rather than having an honest conversation with him about meeting up with Root. Like Harold knowing that John would absolutely not be ok with it and would likely try to stop him because John is terrified of losing Harold again just makes my Rinch sensors go ping! But also, Harold, you could try talking about it before you call a swat team on your boyfriend!
However that decision lead to two wonderful things:
1. The revelation that John put a tracker in Harold’s glasses!!! I had seen this in fic but loved getting to it in the show. Also, you’ve lost “people,” John? No, you lost Harold and it nearly broke you, you smitten mess of a man.
2. Shaw busting John out. We are going to suspend so much disbelief about Shaw not having to go through a metal detector to go see a detained suspect in a police station. And we are going to suspend that disbelief because the guns taped to her back was hot. The whole thing was very hot. Ya got me, tv show.
And speaking of suspension of disbelief: the Machine can only give out coded social security numbers but… can also create fake identities and hire a company full of people to print out its code and type it back in? But also it could do its core function of monitoring and analyzing all people everywhere while being wiped every night? It’s fine! We’re suspending disbelief because the show is good and has earned that. We’re in the computer science equivalent of magical realism and it’s fine.
Also, this is not the first time that Harold has been just hanging out in the park next to Grace’s house, completely out in the open. Like the odds of her seeing him see pretty damn high? This seems a bit at odds with the “she must think I’m dead!” thing.
But these are all thoughts, not criticisms because this was such a good episode. Really reminded me why I love the show.
What did you think about these things or the episode in general? Come say hi and let me know!

solace
summary: not everyone finds it easy to wake up in the morning. it's definitely made easier with the help of a friend, though.
although at this point, is "friend" even the right term to describe one another with? characters: jerome-092, grace hendricks word count: 902 A/N: for @dancing-coyote :P
Tumblr media
"You have bedhead."
Jerome reaches up to pat at his curly hair, puzzled. He's surprised that's the first thing he's greeted with, when Grace stumbles into the rec room at 0900. "And you're up late." he retorts, but there's no heat to it, and he smirks at her as he slides a mug of piping hot coffee across the table to her.
Grace flips him the bird, but shoots him a grateful look as she takes a sip. "Whose fault is that?" He knows exactly how she has her coffee: straight black, nice and fresh and strong.
"Hey, I advised you to go to bed, and that Alice, Douglas, and I had it handled, but you didn't listen..." Jerome shrugs innocently, folding his arms and leaning a hip against the table. Her twin, Killian, had gone to bed an hour or even an hour and a half before she had. But Grace had insisted that she remain, that she would be fine, that she could stay and help finish planning their upcoming mission. Now she was paying for it.
Her response is to reach out and thump him in the shoulder with a fist, hard. He dances out of her reach, yelping, and one hand goes to rub the smarting area gingerly.
"Ow, that's still tender!" he chides with a shake of his head, thinking of how much it had hurt yesterday when he'd sprained it. "Dick move."
She says nothing, but her eyes dance with amusement, and her lips are twitching as she takes another swallow of coffee. He knows she doesn't mean anything by it, though, and that really, he kinda had it coming. He knows full well that Grace has a tendency to be... cranky, first thing in the morning, and it may have become an oddly endearing trait of hers, but really, he shouldn't go poking the bear.
( He doesn't think of the fact that he's probably the only one allowed to gently, teasingly provoke Grace while she's still waking up. Never really occurs to him, but it's definitely A Whole Thing that he'd never hear the end of if anyone else realizes it. )
"I'm not the only one with a severe case of bedhead, though." That smirk is back on his face, and he reaches out to coil a lock of her curly hair around a finger. "What's the term your brother likes to use... Oh yeah, you look like you've been dragged backwards through a bush." The polite way of putting it, at any rate. Killian's exact words are usually more along the lines of "your hair appears to have turned into a nest for a family of rats". "Don't worry, I'll fix it."
Grace, still sleepy, hums wordless assent, and Jerome's quick to dart off to her quarters to raid her bathroom for her hair products.
( He doesn't think about the fact that he knows what kind of supplies are needed to help get Grace's hair under control. It's just something that he'd do for another Spartan, he tells himself. Not that he's ever had the chance to; they all keep their hair shoulder length or shorter. )
"Did you at least get some sleep at all?" he asks, as he gently begins to sort out her frizzy mane.
She mumbles her answer into the mug of coffee. "Probably not much more than you did. But then you're a dirty cheat."
He allows himself a chuckle; she does make a fair point. At least it's a topic he doesn't mind making light fun of, on occasion. "I admit it, my augmented physiology renders me a dirty cheater and I can therefore run on less sleep. Still, don't come cryin' to me when you've overtaxed yourself."
"No, I'll just steal your bunk."
"I don't mind sharing."
"You're a blanket hog."
Jerome sputters. "I am not a blanket hog." As a matter of fact, he really didn't need to use blankets all that often. "I think the blanket hog is you, and you just don't want to admit it, so you pass blame to me."
Because sharing bunks is also a thing they do. It's not even something they put stock into; they just... sometimes happen to fall asleep together. Sometimes it's on purpose, though, like when they need to share quarters because they're planetside. Or when one of them can't sleep because their head is too much, and sharing a bed with your co-worker best friend battle buddy fellow soldier is reassuring: you know you're not the only one who has these nightmares, you've got someone right beside you who's been through similar shitty things, physical contact is grounding, it's fine to share space with someone you're familiar with.
It's just habit, that's all.
He doesn't need to see her face to know that Grace is sticking her tongue out at him, and he swats at her playfully. It's easy, this rhythm they've fallen into; it's become a comfort.
( Grace and Killian are really part of Red Team, at this point. They all look out for each other. They're all under Jerome's command. They're his friends, they belong to him, and he would die for any one of them, just as he knows they would give their lives willingly for him. )
( Sure, he has the tendency to spend more time with Grace than any of the others at this point, but it's mere coincidence. Happenstance, that's all. )
