i don’t know if this is gonna ruffle a few feathers but there’s an account on twitter that’s basically going through a fuck ton of peaky fics on ao3 and a handful of tumblr ones posting sections and being overly pedantic about historical accuracy. which fair enough if it annoys you but dont actively take people’s work, post it elsewhere, make it incredibly fucking obvious what fic it is and be super snide about someone else’s entertainment that doesn’t harm you in any way.
i don’t necessarily think it’s reductive as there’s genuinely some discussion to be had with more sensitive topics, however it just feels real scummy especially because you just know the fic writers aren’t aware so aren’t getting anything constructive out of it.
the only reason i came across it was because it’s been happening in some of my other fandoms - people posting and “critiquing” fics on twitter to point and laugh at writers - and it honestly feels violating and it didn’t even happen to me (at least i fuckin’ hope not).
it’s fuckin’ ao3. leave people alone and stop posting their work without their consent.

So we know Tommy kept the photo on the right with him when he left arrow, hoping that he gave the one on the left to Charlie. Maybe we see it in the movie🤞 We may not be lucky enough to actually see Grace one last time onscreen but at least she can be present via her photo (like she always was in the series)

Pairing: Grace burgers x female Shelby reader
Masterlist (requests are currently open for now)
Note: Sorry, no smut, just a sad one shot.
The moonlight streamed through the thin curtains of the hotel room, casting a ghostly glow on the plush bedspread. In the stillness, Grace’s presence felt like a haunting, an echo of all the laughter and whispered secrets they once shared. The door creaked as she stepped inside, her breath quickening at the sight of the woman she had thought about every day since everything fell apart.
"What are you doing here, Grace?" The words slipped from your lips, sharp and cold as glass. You didn’t turn to face her; instead, you stared out at the dark ocean, waves crashing against the shore--a reminder of how tumultuous everything had become since that fateful night.
"Let me explain," Grace pleaded, stepping farther into the room. The door clicked shut behind her, sealing them in a world where no one else existed.
"Explain? You had your chance for that, Grace. I don’t want to hear any more excuses." You finally turned to face her, the flickering lamplight catching the sheen of tears in her eyes, but anger was the only thing coursing through you now.
Grace took a tentative step forward, her hands raised as if to ward off your fury. "I never wanted you to find out like that. You have to understand… it was complicated." Her voice broke, a fragile thread of emotion woven through her words.
"Complicated?" You scoffed, shaking your head. "Complicated is trying to balance my emotions. What you did was shatter everything we built together." The memories flooded back--of shared dreams and promises whispered under starlit skies, moments of bliss that felt so far removed now.
"I can't change the past," Grace said softly, her vulnerability almost disarming. "But I’ve changed. I’ve spent every day regretting losing you. I came here to make things right."
You felt your heart twist. The sincerity in her voice tugged at the remnants of your affection, but it was too late for that. "Making things right? Grace, you can’t just waltz back into my life and expect us to pick up where we left off. You broke my trust--our trust."
Grace’s eyes darkened with a mix of frustration and desperation. "What do you want me to say? That I’m sorry? Because I am, truly. But I can show you how much I’ve changed." She stepped closer, her gaze intensifying as she reached out for you, fingers brushing against your arm.
You recoiled instinctively, as if her touch burned. "Don’t." It was a single word, laced with all the pain of a year spent nursing a wound that refused to close. "You think sex can fix this? You think it’s that simple?"
The hurt in her eyes was palpable, but Grace held her ground. "No, I don’t think it’s simple. But I know what we had, and I miss it. Don’t you?"
You paused, the crackle of tension hanging in the air like a storm about to break. Memories of soft laughter and warmth flickered in your mind, a stark contrast to the chilly space between you now. "I did miss it once," you admitted, your voice softer than intended, "but that was before I learned the truth about you."
"You can’t erase what we had because of one mistake!" Grace's voice rose, desperation spilling over as she took another step closer. The intensity in her gaze was magnetic, pulling at something deep inside you--something you had fought so hard to bury.
"One mistake?" You echoed incredulously, incredulity lacing your tone. "What you did was a series of decisions that led to betrayal. You put yourself in that position; you chose to deceive me." Your heart raced, the weight of your words heavy in the air. "You think I can just forget that because you’ve decided you want me back?"
Grace's expression shifted, frustration morphing into a determination that was both alluring and terrifying. "No, I don’t expect you to forget. But we could start fresh--if you’d just let me show you how much I care. How much I love you."
The words hung in the air, thick with unspoken longing and the ghosts of what once was. You could see the sincerity in her eyes, a raw honesty that both beckoned and repelled you. Your heart raced, caught between the tender ache of nostalgia and the steely resolve you had built over the past year.
"Love? Is that what you call it?" you asked, voice steadier than you felt. "You loved me while lying to my face? What kind of love is that?"
Grace flinched slightly but quickly regained her composure, her desperation unfurling like a fragile flower in the twilight. "I know I hurt you," she said, her voice now barely above a whisper. "But I’ve spent the last year trying to make sense of everything. I thought I could compartmentalize--keep my life separate from us--but it didn’t work. I lost myself in my own lies."
Maybe that was what angered you the most: the idea that she had become someone else entirely, her true self buried beneath layers of deceit. "You didn’t just lose yourself, Grace," you said, your voice tinged with a mixture of pity and bitterness. "You lost me in the process."
The silence that followed was thick with tension, and you could hear the rhythmic beating of your heart like a war drum in your chest. Grace's eyes shimmered under the weak light, an ocean of regret swirling within their depths. She took another step closer, seemingly unafraid of your rejection.
"Please," she breathed, her voice a soft plea as she reached out again, but this time you didn’t flinch. Instead, you held your ground, your face a mask of stoicism.
"You think that I can just forget how you made me feel? How you shattered my trust and left me to pick up the pieces alone?" You were surprised at how steady your voice remained, how you could contain the storm of emotions whirling inside you. "Now, get out. Don’t worry, I won’t tell my brothers you’re around."
Grace’s shoulders slumped at your words, the fight seemingly draining from her frame. For a heartbeat, silence enveloped the room, thickened by the palpable weight of all that had been left unsaid. "You really mean that," she murmured, and even though it was a statement, it felt like an admission of defeat.
Your heart twisted painfully at her vulnerability, something you had once cherished. Yet here it was, a reminder of how far you had fallen from each other.
"What do you want from me?" you asked, the question slipping out before you could catch it. You didn’t want her to have this power over you--this ability to stir feelings that you had tried so hard to bury.
Instead of answering the question with words, she stepped closer, gently placing her hands on your cheeks.
You felt the warmth of her palms against your skin, a familiar comfort that sent a shiver down your spine. The sensation was almost electric, igniting the smoldering embers of a connection you thought had long since faded.
You opened your mouth to tell her to leave, but she leaned closer, pressing her lips against yours.
You froze, every instinct screaming to pull away, to reject the warmth of those lips that had once ignited a fire in your soul. But as familiar as her touch was, it was also a cruel reminder of the betrayal that had shattered everything. You felt the softness of her kiss--a bittersweet echo of more innocent times--and yet it stirred an overwhelming storm of emotions within you.
You fought against the wave of feelings threatening to engulf you, your mind a cacophony of memories and longing. The kiss was tentative at first, nostalgic, but it quickly deepened as if Grace sought to erase the scars of the past with the tenderness of the present. Your heart raced in response, torn between craving the comfort of her familiarity and the walls you had built to protect yourself.
With a sudden surge of clarity, you broke away, breathing heavily as you stared into her eyes. "What are you doing?" Your voice trembled with a mixture of anger and confusion. "This isn't how it works, Grace. You can't just come back and expect everything to be okay again."
"I know," she said softly, hurt flickering across her features. "But I had to try. I've missed you every single day since... since everything fell apart." Her gaze held an urgency that felt both desperate and sincere.
"You don’t get to miss me now," you shot back, heart pounding with a fervor that matched the storm brewing in your chest. "You made your choices, Grace. You can't just turn back time because it feels convenient. Now go."
You turned away from her, your back to her, trying to block out the turmoil of emotions swirling in your chest. The sound of her footsteps felt like a countdown, each step away pulling you closer to the abyss of your own pain.
You let out a shaky breath when you heard the door slowly opening and after a moment it closed.

Blue Skies - Tommy Shelby
Chapter 15: 'Alone Tonight'
Warnings In This Chapter: Hinted affair, excessive alcohol consumption, arguing, Thomas really messing things up for himself etc. etc. etc.
Masterlist:
---
The distance between you had only grown with the passing weeks.
The more time had passed, the more Thomas had to work. The more he was gone, the more you realized you had been sleeping alone most nights. You understood how busy he was and how his job and family relied on him to make the right choices, but you were a part of his family too, You wanted to keep reminding him, but you knew it was useless when he couldn't put off business any longer.
It was the the night before Elizabeth's performance, and you had finally caught a moment with him. You didn't want to be a bother as you caught sight of him sorting through endless piles of papers on his desk.
"Thomas..." You meekly called as you stepped through the threshold and into the office. He looked up at you for just a moment. And in the split second, you saw just how overworked he was, slowly being consumed by his work. He acknowledged your presence with a small raise of his brow. His blue eyes lit up behind his glasses. "I didn't want to bother you, but I wanted to remind you that tomorrow is Elizabeth's first performance, and she really wants you to be there," You told him, walking further into the room. By the time he nods at your words, you were already at the front of his desk.
"You could have told Francis to deliver the message to me instead of getting out of bed to tell me yourself...you know you need to rest more now that you're further along," He simply stated.
"I wanted to deliver it to you myself so you know just how important this is,” You stood up straight, making sure it was known to him that you were not to be taken lightly at that moment.
“I’ll surely be there,” He sighed.
“If you can’t make it, tell me now so-” You rambled. Thomas takes a heavy, slightly frustrated sigh.
“(Y/n),”
You shut your mouth as he stated your name. ‘Hm?’ You hummed, raising your brows in acknowledgment.
“I would want nothing more than to be there, I promise I will go,” He calmly stated. You nod once.
“It’s late, please try to come to bed tonight,” You reminded him of the time. By this time he was fully invested with his work again as he just hummed at your request. Without another word you were gone. You read his actions loud and clear before going back to the bedroom, holding on to the railing to help you along the way. You slept alone that night once again.
The next day was a busy one. Your kids were taken to school in the company Bentley as you were off to work. Sitting in the office, doing some last minute paperwork and orders for inventory. Ever since you started seeing Thomas, you and your family were put on the protection list, on behalf of the Peaky Blinders. Thomas even managed to have your bills paid and taken care of. It made you feel uneasy to have your independence taken away, but you wouldn’t emasculate him when you knew he was doing it to not only ensure you were taken care of but to ensure you put all of that money into your own wallet for once. The Peaky boys would often linger around the front and back of the bakery to make sure you weren't in harms way. It's not like you ever were in the first place.
Winter was slowly rolling in and you were preparing hot drinks and baked goods for the customers who just wanted to keep warm during the cold seasons. You even offered to serve hot whiskey cider to the workers who came in at the end of their shifts when the snow really kicked in.
And that was why you were everyone’s favorite baker.
After you had closed up the shop, you were picked up and taken on the trip back to Arrow House. You got yourself and Henry ready for Elizabeth's first big performance at the ballet. Frances was there to help get Henry dressed. You struggled to clasp your earrings on you asked her:
“And where the fuck is Thomas, we’re late!”
Much to your knowledge, he was in his office. The pub was lively that night, but he was sitting like a dead corpse at his desk. Smoking a dull cigarette while staring into the flames of the fireplace. The music and laughter muffled by the thick, wooden doors. The heat filled the room but Thomas was still as cold-hearted as ever. Thomas was a smart man after all, but his weakness had just strutted through the door. Holding an even bigger vice than herself, right in her thin hands. Two crystal glasses and brand new bottle of whiskey.
If his recent days hadn’t been so hectic he would have declined her advances and her offer to share a drink. And maybe he would have remembered the promises he made.
At the theater, the show was just starting. You sat in the second row, your son beside you to your left and an empty seat to your right. You watched in amazement and excitement as you spotted her on stage amongst the other swans. Her small height compared to the taller women giving herself away. She looked so beautiful and grown up it nearly made you cry. She didn’t show any sort of hesitation or insecurity as she hit every step, spin, and leap in tune with the orchestra. But in the back of your mind, you still wondered where Thomas was.
“Why aren’t you out there? Arthurs’ just started singing,” She chuckled as she closed the door behind her, drowning out the loud noise and music.
“Lizzie,” He blinked at her as she sat in the chair across from his desk. The red dress she wore exposed her shoulders and her long arms, the necklace that hung around her neck was shining under the lights.
“To what do I owe the pleasure?” He asked, sitting up and putting the cigarette out in the ashtray. Assuming she was inquiring about her job. She shrugs a bit, setting the whiskey and cups on the desk in front of him.
“I just wanted to speak with you,” She reached for one of his cigarettes, and being the gentleman he was, he lit it for her. She continued to speak, but he began to drown her out.
He eyes the alcohol for a moment before clearing his throat and reaching to check his pocket watch. He could have sworn he had somewhere to be, but he couldn’t put his finger on it.
“I didn’t ask you to put anything on my schedule for tonight, did I?” He interrupted. It was unlike him to forget things so easily.
“Um…” She paused to think, but it came up empty and she shook her head. “No, you didn’t tell me anything about tonight. Why, am I keeping you from attending something important?” She asked. His gaze was distant as he slightly shook his head.
“I suppose not, now…what did you want to speak to me about?” He asked. He watches as she stands up to open the bottle and pour him a glass as well as herself. Watching him as he took a small sip, longing for his touch again…missing him deeply. Loathing him for what he did behind her back. But then again, she still wondered…
“Are you happy, Tommy?”
“No…No not always,” He gruffly answered, but his answer was honest nonetheless. But, she already knew that. Everyone already knew that he wasn’t a happy person. After France, after Grace and Charles, after constantly worrying about losing his family. But then, there was you. You helped him little by little to gain that happiness again. To maintain that feeling of being alive.
But that was only temporary when Luca Changretta had his family's names engraved on bullets.
“But there are things in me life that help…still working on those things,” He said. Lizzie nods along.
“What things?”
“Being a good man…a good father,”
She hums.
“Yeah…kind of wished you worked on that when we were together,” She takes a deep inhale of her cigarette. And if Tommy Shelby wasn’t so cold already, her words would have cut him like a knife.
“Why did you do it?” She finally asked after they sat in their silent tension. He set his glass down, looking away from her.
“I wasn’t in love with you,” He told her honestly. She held her stare on him for a moment. Nodding bitterly.
“You’re a fuckin’ liar,” She accused. Tommy chuckled as he leaned back in his office chair with a creak.
“If you really didn’t love me, you would have let me marry John, or fired me after I spoke to your mistress, or wouldn't have given me this fucking job in the first place…so explain that to me, you at least owe me this,” Her eyes were glossy with hot tears. The blinder hesitated before he took one last finishing gulp of the whiskey in his cup.
After the performance, you waited for her in the hall of the theater. She skips to you and Henry, already carrying a bouquet of roses, wearing her boots and a coat over her leotard. Her hair and makeup are still on. She smiled brightly as you opened your arms to engulf her into a hug.
“You did amazing!” You praised her proudly, letting her go as Henry stood beside you.
“I saw you almost tripped,” He teased.
“Shut up,” She nudged him
“Henry that’s-” You started to scold the younger son before you noticed Elizabeth glance around the room.
“Where is Thomas?” She asked, her smile was still on her face but you saw the faintest dismay.
“He really wanted to come, Love but he got stuck at work,” You lied. You had hoped that was the case, but even you weren’t sure. You rubbed her shoulder comfortingly. She stutters.
“That’s okay, can we just go home? I’m starving,” You nodded, your arms over her shoulders as Henry held your other hand, slowly leading them out of the theater and to the car.
At home, you tried your best to hide your disappointment in your fiancé, who still hadn’t shown up. But regardless, the three of you sat at the dining table as the maids served Elizabeth’s favorite dish. Roasted chicken, potatoes, salad, and bread. It was simple compared to the other dishes the kitchen staff make, but it was more than enough for your family. In her opinion, your home-cooked meals were better.
“Did you know dad came tonight?” Elizabeth stated as she picked up her silverware.
“Was he the one who brought the roses?” You asked, desperately wishing you could guzzle some wine to distract you from the growing stress in your chest. The feeling of dread coming and going with every ticking second on the clock.
“Yeah...he sat in the back, he saw me just before you did,”
“That’s nice, darling I’m glad he came,”
‘At least he made an effort, can’t say the same for Thomas,’ You bitterly thought. Your eyes were dark as you stared at your plate. Aggravation causes your appetite to greatly decrease.
“Should we wait for Thomas?” Henry asked. You shook your head.
“Go ahead and eat,” You gave permission as you moved the food around your plate, attempting to at least eat. You, rather aggressively, cut into your chicken as your silverware clanked on the ceramic plates. Your children watched you, giving each other a knowing glance to not ask as they followed and hesitantly began eating. You heard the heavy footsteps of your fiancé walking into the room. “Sorry I’m late,” He apologized as he went around the table, rubbing Elizabeth's shoulder and tussling Henry's hair before he approached you. Henry fixed his hair as he smiled up at him while Elizabeth gave him the silent treatment. He placed a hand on your shoulder before kissing your temple. “Hello, sweetheart,” He whispered. Your lips form into a tight line before you acknowledge him. Your jaw clenched a bit as you refrained from pulling away from his touch. He sat down in his own seat across from you.
“I’ve been trying to reach you for hours,” You stated, a hint of displeasure in your voice as you take a sip of water.
“I was at work,”
“All day?” You quickly shot back.
“Yes, darling I was stuck at work and then I attended a very important family meeting,” His tone slightly changed, exhausted from his long day and the interrogation he had to go through with you. As he got situated, the only noise was your children eating and quietly whispering back and forth.
“Well, Elizabeth did amazing tonight,” You reminded him after clearing your throat, keeping your eyes down on your plate. Thomas formed his lips in a thin line, internally scolding himself. He knew deep down he had forgotten something important. He glances at you but your eyes were elsewhere, the dead and tired look in his eyes showed only a bit of guilt as he looked from you to your daughter.
“Elizabeth,” He called. She only continued to eat, not looking at him when he spoke. “I had a terrible and busy day at work today, but I apologize for not showing up tonight, I was really looking forward to seeing you,”
Elizabeth just glanced at him.
“It’s fine…” She simply said before going back to pushing her food around her plate.
“You know, next time you’re going to be this late, I would at least appreciate a call,” You told him, quietly enough so only he could hear.
“And next time when I have a shit day at work, I would appreciate it if you didn’t badger me the second I walk through the door,” He said in the same volume, but in a more apathetic tone.
Your eyes scanned him, examined him as he just stared at his plate. Your eyes quickly scan your children before turning back to pick up your glass of water.
“Eat some bread for Christ sake,” You hissed your Small Heath accent thicker than he had ever heard. Thomas widened his eyes a bit in disbelief as he started dismissively yet obediently eating the food on his plate.
“Henry, how was your day?” You asked him. He looked up at you and smiled. Thomas' gut sank at the change of pitch in your voice. The sweetness as you spoke to your children was like honey.
“It was good,”
“And your lessons?” You pondered again.
“I’m getting better, Miss Matisse says I might even have a part in the orchestra this year,” You smiled warmly at him.
“I’m glad darling…what about you, Elizabeth?” You turned to her.
“It was fine…just uneventful before the show,” You nod at her words.
“What about you, Thomas?” You asked, sarcasm and accusations seeping from your words.
“It was fine, (Y/n)...How was your day?” He feigned interest.
“Oh, I think you should go first,” You mumbled.
“You can go first,” He scoffed, arguing.
“No,” You set your silverware down with a loud clank and looked at him. Sharply lifting your head to make direct eye contact with him. Your eyes darkened as your tone and demeanor completely changed, it was something he had never seen before. “Tell us, how was your day?” You faked a smile at him as he just stared at you. His eyes are low and dark.
“I said my day was fine…” He said back to you, spitting as much venom as you did. You heavily sigh through your nose. Bringing your water to your lips. As dinner went on, Henry had brought one of his toy cars to the table. Rolling the wheels over his napkins and silverware. The irritating squeaking of the wheels caused everyone at the table to feel vexed, but Elizabeth was the first to snap.
“Will you stop?” Her brows furrowed as she looked at him. He grinned as he stopped momentarily before continuing.
“Stop!” She shouted.
“No,” He argued, sticking his tongue out at her. The two continued to bicker.
“We all want to hear what happened to you today,” You said again. Thomas sat back in his chair, pressing his thumb and index fingers to the bridge of his nose. He pulled his fingers away as he stared at the nearly full plate before him. His mind was practically numb at this point, and the anger began to bubble up with every passing second. The frustration radiated in his head, jaw, and shoulders as he shifted to try to calm himself. The more you questioned him and the louder your children fought made his head ache and his jaw clench. Just then, Elizabeth grabs the toy car and begins to run around the table as Henry chases after her.
“Elizabeth, sit down please,” You sternly, yet tiredly ordered. “Mom, she won’t give it back, make her stop!” Henry complained as she held the toy over his head, just barely out of reach.
“Both of you come sit back down, I won’t ask you again,”
They continued to chase each other and argue as Thomas sat in silence, the pending anger just waiting to be set off. The two children began to yell and whine.
“Mom!”
“Knock it off, let go of me!”
“Stop it, both of you!”
“Stop!” They repeated loudly. Just as you were about to stand, Thomas abruptly stood from his chair, it loudly scraped against the floor as he slammed his hands on the table.
“Shut the fuck up!” With each word he yelled, his hands came down to slam on the table. You covered your ears, startled by the sudden loud noise as Henry and Elizabeth stopped in their tracks, in sudden shock as they stared with wide eyes. The room was suddenly silent. You kept your eyes down at the table and your hands were on your lap. Upset and angry but not sure how to react. Thomas takes a deep breath to calm himself down. Hanging his head low before standing up straight.
“I…I am so sorry, but you really need to listen to your mother, eh?” He asked. Breathing heavily, he takes a cigarette out of his pocket. He didn’t even notice the blood on his hand until he saw the red stain his sleeve, the table, plates, and silverware below. He simply uses one of the napkins to wrap it.
“She asked multiple times to stop, you have to listen to her, she is your mother,” he excuses himself and leaves the room, a trail of smoke follows. You shakily stand up, giving your kids a tight hug, holding them into you tightly as you reassured them that things were going to be okay. You sent them to have a bath as you sat in silence at the table. Holding a hand over your mouth, feeling nauseated and shaken. You stand and slowly walk to Thomas’s side of the table.
“Fuck,”

American Woman (Thomas Shelby x American OC) Ch. 55: Resolved Debt
Masterlist: https://www.tumblr.com/sl-newsie/739551758747090944/american-woman-thomas-shelby-x-american-oc?source=share
For the rest of the day I keep myself busy by cleaning out the entire house. Every time I look over at my suitcase in the corner my stomach ties into a knot. Maybe Alfie’s right. I shouldn't be here. All that’s happened since I got here has gone from complicated to worse. And-
Okay, where is Thomas? I take another glance out the window. Mr. Solomons has returned with his gang but Thomas is missing. He wouldn’t forget to accompany his friend back to his car. Did something come up?
I leave Charlie asleep on the sofa and stick my head out the door to call across the street.
“Where’s Thomas? I thought he was with you.”
Alfie looks up and sees me shouting. He motions for his men to wait and walks over to the front steps, leaning his cane on the railing.
“The man left for some errands. Mentioned something about the foundation or whatever.”
“Just him? No one else went with him?”
He scoffs. “How the fuck would I know?”
That doesn’t sound like Thomas. All these weeks he’s stressed about security and keeping in pairs. He would have told Alfie where he was going.
“Alone…” A light flicks on in my head and panic sprints through me. Polly! “That’s means-! I need to find him!”
I lurch forward to start running but Alfie reaches out and grabs my arm. No no no! This must be what Polly set up! Changretta will want to get Thomas alone so he can kill him-!
“Whoa, whoa.” Alfie tugs me back. “Whatever this mess is, you are not in it.”
I try to pull away. “Polly did this! She-!”
“Not. Your. Business. You want something to do? Go tend to his boy.”
“I-”
“Verena.” The Jewish gangster gives me a certain look. “We both know that a father without his son is the worst thing we can let happen to him. He needs someone like you to look after Charlie.”
“I have been!” I cry out with a cross between rage and despair. “And he never tells me anything! I am not going to wait for a note saying he’s been shot!”
“Steenstra, coming from a man who knows how Tommy thinks, let me say this. He has strange ways of showing affection.” Alfie, seeing that I’ve calmed down a fraction, pats my shoulder. “I’ll leave it at that.”
Yes, because that cleared up so many questions! I watch the man stride back to his car and see him give a final wave as the vehicle starts driving away. So I’m subjected to what all other Shelby women struggle through. Staying safe indoors while I wait for Thomas to tell me what’s going on.
Thud! The sound of the back door sends me sprinting down the hall. No more of this-!
“Polly?”
The Romanian woman walks past my shocked face and starts to light a cigarette.
“What a surprise,” I droll darkly. “Are you here to apologize to Charlie for killing off his dad?”
She flicks some ash into the sink. “Tommy isn’t dead.”
Not dead? Not…? Okay, then what did happen? She can’t hide it from me! Polly’s worried just as I am!
I clench my fists and march straight up to her. “Somebody better start telling me what the fuck is going on right now-!”
“We’re holding a family meeting,” Polly explains all too calmly. “I’ll explain everything then. Right now, keep your head clear. You don’t need to pick up Tommy’s hot-headedness.”
“My head clear? My head clear?” I hiss. “Do you have any idea how hard I’ve been trying to keep a clear head throughout these past weeks?”
Polly just shakes her head and walks off to see Charlie. My shoulders slump and I lean against the wall. Not Polly too. Is Ada the only other one who understands this insanity? Can somebody tell me anything?
Knock knock.
I cannot handle any more of this. That better be a bloody angel because, dear God, I need some good news-!
“Hello.”
Thomas. It’s Thomas. Alive. Holding a parcel.
“Thank Christ. You son of a bitch!”
My anger fazes into frustrated relief and my knees buckle. Thomas uses his free hand to grab me just before I can crumple to the ground. He stands me up and I bury my face into his warm coat. At the same time I weakly pound a fist against his shoulder, still raging about his return.
“Y-You could’ve- I thought you were going to die!” I gasp. “What happened, Thomas? What the fuck is going on?” I look back at the parcel. “And what is this? More guns?”
Thomas clears his throat and helps me stand straighter. “Verena, about the argument from before. I understand that you’re only looking out for your family. None of this is your fault. I know you’re not working for Changretta.”
“Thomas… That’s really sweet, and I accept your apology, but just moments ago I was about to pull my hair out worrying about if you had been killed!”
“Here, here. Let’s get inside.” Thomas ushers me back into the warm house and shuts the door. “I know, none of this has been fair for you. And the Hudson-”
“Don’t mention the car, Thomas. I needed to stop keeping quiet and thought that it would help-”
“Oh it does, love.” Thomas licks his lips. “It’s a gorgeous car. But I still owe you a big apology for this whole mess. So to make it up, Charlie and I picked out this a few days ago. Thought you’d like it.”
He passes me the box. Why does he look… scared? Excited? It’s hard to tell. And why is the box light? I remove the top and peer inside. It’s- It’s… A beautiful white coat! An elegant, warm coat that feels almost too soft to the touch. He picked this out for me?
My jaw drops and I immediately start shaking my head. “Thomas, I cannot accept this. It’s too much.”
Thomas sees the joy in my eyes and refuses to take the parcel back. “‘Course not. You need something to keep you warm here. Please.” He puts a hand over mine and gently pushes the box further against me. “Please take it.”
“It’s genuine fox fur!” I gush. “This must have cost a fortune! If I wear this half of England will come running expecting me to be some prime duchess or somebody important.”
“You are important. To us.”
He didn’t say ‘to me.’ Is this an apology for the argument or saying sorry for pushing me onto the ‘women to pay no mind’ list?
“Thanks again for watching Charlie.”
He’s had his hands full with this vendetta business that he’s had no time for his own son. A steep understatement. So was I wrong? Thomas really does care? He just… has strange ways of showing affection.
I grudgingly accept the gift and smile warmly. “You never need to thank me for watching him.”
Thomas closes his eyes and rubs his temple. “There’s so much I need to thank you for, love.”
Then why do I still feel pushed away?
“Thomas.” I hold up the coat. “You don’t need to apologize with this. Just promise me you will keep me informed. Promise me.”
He leans against the wall I’ve backed him into and sighs. “I can’t.” His piercing blue eyes look down at me with something I can’t quite decipher. “You know why.”
I bite my lip and take a deep breath. “Yes. I know why. But it doesn’t hurt to ask again.”
I love you, Thomas! And it makes me saddened with worry and sick with anger that I will never be good enough for you.
Thomas starts to reach over but holds back. “I know you still believe I’m worth saving. But- But all I’ve given you are more problems. You don’t-”
“Tommy.”
Polly cuts him off and motions for him to follow her to the parlor. Did she do that on purpose? How am I supposed to pry anything out of Thomas without being interrupted?
Thomas sits in an armchair, an unlit cigarette hanging from his lips, and stares at Charlie playing with his blocks. He doesn’t notice right away when Polly offers him a drink.
“What do you think you’re going to tell Arthur?” she asks.
Thomas doesn’t blink. “I’m going to tell them the truth.”
“Did she like the coat?” Charlie asks shyly from the floor.
Thomas doesn’t answer right away so I speak for him. “I love it, Charlie. It’s beautiful. Did you help pick it out?”
He grins proudly. “Yeah! It was the softest one.”
In the corner of my eye I see Thomas look over at me. He’s still holding something back. But what?
Polly moves over to look out the window. “They’re here.”
I will have to wait for another time. Again. I was so close to telling him.
Another family meeting. Another awkward silence while everyone waits for Thomas to speak. This time I choose to wait with Charlie in the hall while everyone else gathers around the table.
After a minute Arthur speaks up. “Heard there was a shooting today.”
Thomas nods. “Yeah. I killed three men today. Now our enemies will have to wait.”
Arthur and I exchange the same look of surprise, while Lizzie and Ada don’t look the least bit shaken. That’s what was waiting for Thomas today. But he lived.
Charlie tugs at my skirt and points to his dad. “Was daddy in trouble?”
“No, no,” I whisper and kneel down next to him. “Your vader just met up with some bad men.”
“Suppose they took you by surprise?” Arthur asks gruffly.
“No. I knew they were coming.”
Hold the phone. He knew?
Polly speaks up. “A few months ago I received a letter from Luca Changretta, offering to spare my son if I gave up Tommy. And I gave Tommy up.”
“Which is the plan that Polly and I agreed on,” Thomas explains. “I knew Luca would want to pull the trigger himself so I used this as a setup to bring him in.”
He locks eyes with me and sees my growing irritation. All this time? He knew all this time what he was getting himself into and he told me nothing!
“I didn’t get Luca, but I got three. All right?” He walks over and leans down to pick Charlie up. “Come here, you.”
Johnny Doggs holds up a glass. “I thought you’d gone soft. I drink to you, Tom.”
“So you got three?” Uncle Charlie asks.
Thomas nods. “I got three.”
“Well, I drink to you, Tom.”
Charlie looks back and forth in confusion. “Dad, you got three what?”
Thomas laughs and pokes his chest. “I got three shillings for a two-shilling horse.” I guess that’s one way to put it. “Now, my boy, you come with us, eh?”
Charlie giggles and gives me a wave goodbye. Arthur lets out a laugh and ruffles the boy’s hair.
“Been playing with Aunt Verena, eh Charlie?”
Suddenly Thomas’ gaze hardens. “No, Arthur.”
“Why not? She’s basically a sister.”
Yes. Why not? I should think that I deserve aunt status at this point. And why is Polly looking at Thomas like that? Almost like she knows something…
The Romanian woman catches me looking and busies herself by grabbing her coat. “I’m picking up Michael from the hospital tomorrow. Then I'm dropping him off to Mr. Gold on the outskirts.”
I stifle a laugh. “Michael? In the woods? He’s going to hate it.”
Polly rolls her eyes. “He’s going to deal with it.”
Once she walks out, Thomas sticks his head back in, with Charlie still clinging to his neck.
“We’re going out for a drink. When I bring Charlie back for his nap, will you watch him ‘til I get back tonight?”
I put my hands on my hips and give him a cheeky glare. “I suppose Charlie can spend more time with his non-aunt.” My teasing fades. “You’re not staying?”
Thomas notices my disappointment and tilts my chin up. “I've got some paperwork but I’ll be back. I promise.”
Thomas does fulfill his promise… eventually. He brings Charlie back just as it starts to turn dark, tucking the yawning child into bed. But he walks back out again, no doubt off to overwork himself. Thomas seemed eager to come back but does not return until the early hours of the morning. I don’t know what kept him but when I hear the door open I put down the dishes I’m washing and head straight for him.
“You’re back late. Charlie’s- Thomas? What is it?”
His face. All hints of conquering and happiness from earlier are gone. Replaced by a sad stare. He looks as if someone just slapped him.
Thomas’ mouth opens and closes while he tries to think of what to say. He pinches the bridge of his nose and removes his hat.
“Did Polly tell you?”
Tell me what? In case he hasn’t noticed yet, I’ve been kept in the dark with many important bulletins as of late.
“I take that as a no.” Thomas lets out a deep breath. “Lizzie, she’s… pregnant.”
Tug! My body goes still and I grip the dish towel even harder. The blood drains from my face. My heartbeat screams in my ears. I lean against the wall, keeping my shocked, distraught face hidden away. All this time…
“Th-That’s wonderful, Thomas,” I manage to say through my shreiking thoughts. “Another baby is another blessing.”
I feel Thomas put his warm hand on my tense shoulder. “Are you alright?”
Alright? Alright?! Is he fucking joking?!
“Yes, just tired.” I pull away and fling the towel onto the counter, changing to a colder persona. “Is there anything else, Mr. Shelby?”
My heartless tone hits Thomas square in the chest. A sorrowful look freezes over his face. Good.
“No.”
“Congratulations again. I’m sure Charlie will be happy to have a sibling.”
I rush back to my room and fight the urge to slam the door right off its hinges. It’s happening all over again. They have a baby, he marries her, I’m pushed away again. Sticks and stones, best wishes to them both. At least Grace brought a sense of peace to Thomas. Lizzie only seems to bring out the rough side of him.
Lizzie Stark? Lizzie fucking Stark. Back to his old ways. He will kiss any woman but me. Always another woman. Just when he starts to open up, he uses someone else. Is my love invisible to him? There he goes again, back to Lizzie while I’m taunted for being single.
Thud! That was the front door.
Yes. Go, Thomas. That’s one fucking context clue you pick up on! I want to be alone.
I’m just another whore to you, Thomas Shelby. You’ve said it yourself. We’re all whores, we just sell different parts of ourselves. I’ve sold you my time. Each year I saved my time for you and your family, your Shelby Company Limited. And for what?
Ring! Ring!
If that’s Lizzie Stark I’m going to rip the phone clear from the wall! I roughly pick up the receiver. On the other end I hear the distinct chatter of two people.
“Verena?”
No. No. No. I do not need a talk full of pity.
“Please, Finn… Not now. You too, Ada.”
I hear Ada sigh. “He told you?”
I choke back a sob and wipe the pooling tears from my eyes. “Yes. God smiles on us again.”
“Verena-”
“PLEASE!” I shriek and cover my mouth to keep myself from breathing too fast. “Just- Just leave me be.”
I hang up before they can argue. That does it. I’m not playing this game anymore. As soon as this bloody fight is over I’m packing my bags for home! Company employee or not, I will not stick around to work in these harassing conditions. Despite my lingering love for that klootzak, it’s not enough to win me over to stay anymore. No more moral obligation. My debt is finally paid.
Maybe I will be too cold, Thomas. Too empty and numb. But I’ve followed you around too long, hoping you might love me back. If this is what it takes to earn love, it’s a cost I’m not willing to pay.
And yet even if I’m leaving for good, my heart will never be free from you.

There's a myth about a child who was born between a beauty and a ghost king in my country. I would like to create love story between Grace in alive AU and Thomas Shelby dead in S3E2 AU.
Grace is running Shelby Company Limited instead of her dead husband. She is also a boss of Peaky Blinders. An Irish posh woman who overcomes adversity.
On a rainy day, she finds a ghost of Tommy Shelby who is tainted with mud through window. He stares with fond eyes, seems that he missed her for a long time. Grace opens the window to let him in, kisses deeply, lie in bed, and have sex passionately.
Finally Grace gets pregnant, which makes everybody shocked. Although some of her enemy malign she has love affair with another guy, our strong Grace doesn't care. She gives birth to her & Tommy's child. Tommy in ghost form always watches. Of course he fancies himself as the guardian of his newborn child...

Tommy & Grace’s 100th Wedding Anniversary!!
January 7th, 1924
S3 script mentions this date as their wedding day
The man smiled more times in this single episode than the entire series!!!
I rewatched that episode and I must say it was shot so beautifully. There was so much judgement and chaos around Tommy yet when he was near Grace, everything evaporates and he naturally becomes the soft & gentle Tommy we only ever see with her. Grace effect!!!
We were blessed with so many iconic and adorable moments from the wedding day.
Here’s my 7 favourites:
⚜️Bridezilla Tommy- The usually calm and collected Mr Shelby was a bundle of nerves, all because he cared about Grace’s feelings and didn’t want to embarrassed her in front of her family!!
⚜️Marraige Kiss- everything was perfect about that shot. Their eyes and smiles said it all. They had both wanted this moment for a long time and finally overcame all the hurdles (individual and societal) to become Man and Wife.
⚜️The little carraige ride on Grace’s favourite horse. It is elaborated in the script. Tommy is grumpy but eventually comes around and Grace manages to make him smile.
⚜️Hello Mrs Shelby *swoon* - The entire sequence from the beginning when he is throwing a tantrum up to being on top of her on bed, it was absolutely adorable and I had hoped we would be blessed with more such moments now that they are together. But alas that stayed a dream!!!
⚜️The dance- When they are together, the entire world drowns. It was so beautiful to see just them being so close and in each other’s arms, no one else on the world mattered except them and Charlie.
⚜️At the end of day- just them. His calm in between the chaos, such a serene and peaceful moment. I am so glad we have this moment. She was his strength, he could have overcome any trauma as long as she was with him.
⚜️And…the first night!! Tumblr flagged it in my first attempt so only mentioning it here. Wish Charlie hadn’t cried in that moment 🌚

Blue Skies - Tommy Shelby
Chapter 16: 'You're No Good For Me'
Warnings In This Chapter: Hinted affair, mentions of blood, manipulation etc etc. ANGST
Masterlist:
---
It took you almost twenty minutes to calm your children down.
Reassuring them that things were going to be okay. But even you yourself were unsure. Giving them a tight hug and a kiss goodnight, making sure to tell Frances to stay with them until they fell asleep, before you entered the bedroom.
You didn't want them to hear the absolute terror you were about to unleash.
Thomas sat on the bed, his jacket discarded and his white shirt somewhat unbuttoned. His hand was still wrapped in the blood-stained cloth from the dining table. You harshly slammed the door behind you, making the room rattle, approaching him and stopping to stand in front of him with your arms crossed.
“You lost your temper with my kids, Thomas…That can never happen again, do you understand?”
He only nods once before he purses his lips and looks up at you.
“Your kids are out of control,” He stated with raised brows and condescension behind his words. Your brows furrowed in confusion.
“They’re fuckin’ kids! That is how kids behave when they’re tired, hungry, and disappointed,” You listed. He arched a brow at you. 'Disappointed' he repeated with a bitter laugh.
“I told you I wasn’t ready for this, didn’t I? I warned ya…I fuckin’ warned ya,” He pointed a finger at you with his non-injured hand before he stood up and struggled to unknot his tie with one hand, taking strides to his wardrobe. You stood in your place as you stared at him, bewildered.
“It’s not that hard to ask for help, you could have asked your Aunt or your sister for help, but it’s a little too late to turn back now,” You shook your head in disbelief.
“Yeah, I am sure Aunt Pol would have some great advice on how to discipline your kids for you,” He simply said with a small glance. Perplexed, you screwed your brows together.
“Don’t you dare,” You seethed.
“What?” He taunted, walking to his wardrobe to put his clothes away.
“Don’t you dare blame my kids, the only person acting like a child tonight was you!”
He exhales heavily as he slammed the door to the wardrobe shut before turning to you, the obvious frustration on his face. His normal glacier eyes were dark like the darkest depths of the ocean as he wore a stern look on his face. He approached you, at least a few inches away from your face. Under any other circumstances, he would just be a kiss away. And everything would have been forgotten.
“I’m acting like a child?” Shock laced his question.
“Yes, you are,” You argued. You looked down and reached for his wrist, bringing it up to show him. “You slammed your hands so hard, that you broke a fucking glass and you cut yourself…you threw a tantrum just like a fuckin’ baby,” He jerked his hand away from you. He wasn’t in any pain, his anger numbed it.
“I have made big sacrifices for you…huge fuckin’ sacrifices, I am behind on my work because I spent all my time with you-”
“And you think I haven’t? I have to commute at least forty minutes back and forth everyday,” You interrupted.
“And that wouldn't have been a problem if you just took everyone’s advice and hired someone to help you,” He said quietly.
You took a deep breath before speaking again.
“You walked into my family…my beautiful family that took years to grow and create, one that you would have started by now if you had any strength, courage, or restraint,” You stepped back from him, glaring at him with disgust. “Esme was right, you’re unstable…I get it…work is hard but that does not give you the right to act the way you do,”
“And how is that, (Y/n)?” His condescending tone was pushing you closer and closer to the edge. Your blood boils with every second.
“Oh, would you like me to list it off for you, Thomas?” You asked. “Your terrible temper, your unstable mood, your drinking problem, and the fact that I found snow in your office and opium in your nightstand!” You yelled.
He chuckled.
“Ah, after all this time…I still stand by what I assumed,”
“Which assumption would that be? Because you’ve made so many,” You laughed. You stood far away from each other. You were by your vanity while he leaned against the bedpost.
“You pretended to be drunk to get me to fuck you, get you pregent,”
You both fell silent. The only noises in the room were your heavy breaths and the crackling of the wood in the fireplace as the flames cast an intimidating shadow upon your face. Your chest heaved up and down rapidly as you gulped down the lump in your throat as your hands moved to rub your stomach, protectively as the baby began to move about and kick.
“Oh God…How could you say that?” You asked yourself as you turned away from him. You held your hand over your mouth to side the sobs as you bent over, one hand leaning on the vanity. Thomas slowly approaches you and attempts to hold you.
“This is just an obstacle…eh? Listen to me…Listen to me (Y/n), I am sorry I shouldn’t have said that, this was only a setback,”
You pulled your arms away from his touch. Overwhelmed by everything around you. His smell, his touch, his voice, the hot temperature of the room, the weight of the baby, everything had you wanting to just tear your hair out and scream.
“No…No this isn’t a setback, Thomas…this is a fuckin’ disaster!”
“I warned you that the stress of what I do and the stress of this is going to ruin our relationship-”
“The stress of what?” You asked, turning to him with tears in your eyes.
“Having a baby together,” He answered. You shook your head.
“No…Three…” You held up your shaky hand, showing three fingers. “Thomas…Three children!”
“I didn’t even ask for one!” His voice boomed.
“You act like you’re the only one who fucked up their life,”
He shook his head before he sat down at your vanity chair, picking up a cigarette to rub it across his lips before lighting it.
“I guess that’s what happens…” He took a deep breath. “When strangers get drunk and fuck,” he exhales the smoke.
You paused and swallow thickly. Your eyes scanned him. Until you spotted the red smudge on the collar of his shirt, the red and purple spots on his clavicle. Everything seems so clear now. Your eyes began to tear up as you gasp in doubt.
"I knew it," You muttered as you looked away. Thomas lifted his head to look at you.
"I fucking knew it!" You shouted, picking up a glass perfume bottle and raising it to throw it at him, Thomas quickly leaves the vanity chair and rushes to the washroom, dropping the cigarette as the glass bottle shattered against the hardwood as it merely missed him.
"What the fuck?!" He shouted from behind the door. He could only hear you shouting, crying and the loud crashing of only what he assumed was you breaking the valuables on the vanity. He scrambles to look in the mirror, cursing to himself as he looked at the love-bites and the lipstick that were evidently clear now that he was sober.
"You're a fucking coward Thomas Shelby!" You cried as you leaned against the door.
"It was nothing (y/n), you're overreacting!"
You chuckled sourly. leaving the door to sit on the bed. Thomas cautiously opened the door, looking out into the room, the broken glass of the beauty products were haphazardly spread across the floor. There you sat, tears glistening on your cheekbones as you looked down at the floor.
"(y/n)…please," He held his uninjured hand out as if you were a wild animal. You tsked and roll your eyes at him.
"Oh please, Thomas..." You mumbled.
He threw his hands up, breathing heavily.
"Humor me, Thomas..." You started, slowly standing up. "Who was it?"
"I don't know what you're-"
"Stop lying for one second and tell me!" You snapped. He blinks, his body seemed less tense as he conjured up the courage to tell you.
"You know who," He simply stated.
"At least have some courage and say her fuckin' name...you owe me that at least,"
Thomas licks his lips and looks down. Suddenly feeling brave he says her name. It felt like a curse leaving his lips.
"Lizzie Stark,"
You nod bitterly, crossing your arms over your chest.
“I’m packing my shit and I’m leaving…tonight,” You told him, turning back around to pack whatever little you had left into a trunk. He watched as you then went into your children's room to wake them up and help them pack a small bag, fetching some maids to help you take them to the car as you threw whatever gifts, dresses, jewelry, other materialistic things he got for you onto the floor. Throwing your coat on as you made your way down the stairs with Frances’s help. Your children, although confused and still tired, sat in the backseat of the company car, knowing this was the last time you would have that kind of luxury. You sat in the middle as they rested their heads on your shoulders and cuddled into your sides. A single tear escaped your eye as the car began to take off down the long entry path. If only Thomas knew of the agony you felt in your heart.
Thomas stood outside, watching in somberness as you left. Without a goodbye and second glance. You and Thomas had argued before, of course but it never got this bad. It was always resolved by the morning, but he feared that this was the last time.
He wanted to cry, scream, and yell over the fact that he really fucked up his last chance with you. He loved you more than words could say. As the car disappears into the dark distance he retreats back inside.
"Should I assume she is coming back, sir?" Frances asked.
"That...I am unsure, Frances..." He shook his head.
"Please get some rest, Mr. Shelby...have some peace of mind,"
And so he did. He tried at least. He cleaned up most of your mess but as he laid in bed he held the engagement ring between his fingers. You had left it on your vanity before you took off.
Oh how beautiful it would have looked on your finger when you got married.

canNOT STOP imagining 1 of 2 things in the horsegirl au:
Dream going absolutely feral trying to protect Hob from some evil person, like, hooves flying, bashing heads with kicks, full on biting, and then having to try and calm down and feel safe again once the danger has passed. OR
Dream going absolutely feral to get out of his restraints and run to hob after they get caught by poachers or something. Trying to reach for each other but ropes or netting and preventing it.
HRRRG YEAH. YES. precisely
Dream really does have a nasty kick ( when he's not half asleep). and at the circus he was very "difficult" to deal with.
I can picture circus employees hazing each other to go inside his enclosure and .... they would probably receive a punctured lung or be sent flying back out of the stall a good 8 feet. Or if they were very unlucky they’d get charged and trampled.
I definitley want to draw more of Dreams feral centaur rage moments now that he is free >:)))) If Burgess' goons ever catch up they will have a healed and angry centaur to deal with. Dream will not be kind.
Or perhaps they do run into poachers, or bandits, or unhelpful magical creatures. The world is big and dangerous and Dream's home is very far away. This centaur has over a decade of pent up rage stored inside of himself. I think he should be allowed to go beastmode, as a treat.
Hob will help calm him down after :3
I also like to imagine how Dream would've fought with a centaur made weapon before his capture ( not a knife ) I bet Dream was actually quite graceful with his weapon of choice. But that was a very very long time ago. Now he kicks things.
I picture Hob fighting like a lunatic in this AU. Scrappy, inventive, informal, and surprisingly effective, probably shooting someone with their own gun.

No Son Of Mine (One Shot)
Summary: Justice had finally been served in the wake of John's death. But with all acts of violence comes consequences, one Tommy must face when his trusted friend Johnny dogs stumbles upon the now orphaned baby of the traitor and his wife he and Arthur had both murdered in cold blood all in the name or revenge. With no child of their own and Graces refusal to send him to the orphanage, Tommy begrudgingly takes the child into his care. Will Tommy ever show young Oliver the love of a father he deserves? Or will he continue to see him as nothing but a burden the heavens had cruelly punished him with?
Warnings: Language, mentions of murder, mentions of blood, angst, fluff
Authors note: A lovely reader of mine popped into my messages and kindly asked me if I could write this story for them. I'm sorry for the long delay hun, I can only blame my procrastinating brain for my tardiness. Anyway, I hope i did your prompt justice. Enjoy!
"Right, we done?" Tommy said raising a brow as he wiped the blood that had splattered onto to his crisp white evening shirt looking to his brother Arthur nodding his head in response, his chest heaving up and down as he brushed his bloody hands through his hair, both having been sidetracked from the nights festivities.
" Fucking scum" Arthur sniffed wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as he gave one last kick to the lifeless body at his feet. A cascade of events since John's death had led up to this very day, and Tommy and Arthur both simultaneously agreed without the need of words that justice had finally been served. Luca Changretta had been dead for almost a fortnight, the vendetta was over for all but the two surviving older brothers. That was until tonight when both Arthur and Tommy were unexpectedly called away to the news that Johnny dogs had found exactly who they'd been looking for. The traitor, the informer, the bastard that had given John's address to the Italians. A Peaky Blinder, one of their very own men.
" What about her?" Arthur spat a splutter of saliva laced with blood to the ground, the result of one lucky punch from the chancer that had tried his luck with the towering gangster. He'd put up a decent fight, one Arthur enjoyed watching before his patience grew thin and he pummeled his fist into him, each snap and break of his bloody face crumbling into something unrecognizable before being shot point-blank in the head. No one wanting or willing to hold him back. Not even Tommy. No forgiveness was given that dark night, only the sweet mercy met at the end of the barrel of a gun.
" Collateral" Tommy replied as he rubbed a cigarette across his lips not giving the nights events one ounce of remorse. This was for John after all.
" Collateral?" Arthur sniffed feeling a pang of guilt hit his stomach. Women and children were not to be harmed, an unspoken agreement before time in all dealings in war between men.
" Yes Arthur, fucking collateral alright?" Tommy snapped as he marched over to his brother whose eyes hadn't left those of the lifeless woman laid on the muddied ground below him " She ran into the line of fire brother. She all but killed herself" Tommy finished growing impatient with Arthur's weighing guilt. The last thing he needed was his number one soldier to be hit with a moral compass.
" Lads, we've got ourselves a wee problem" Johnny rushed over breathless as he loosened the neckerchief from the vein pumping angrily on the side of his neck. Fuck sake, Tommy thought to himself as he threw his cigarette to the ground. Things could never go smoothly, as smoothly as murder could go that was.
" What kinda problem?" Tommy replied as he and Arthur followed him into the small bedsit from the courtyard that two dead bodies had yet to be disposed of. The commotion resulting in the curiosity and twitching of the neighbours curtains, not one of them daring to or even contemplating in the slightest to inform any person of authority. Who would they go to? The police? The mere thought was laughable.
"Just a small one" Johnny replied taking two steps at a time up the rickety wooden stairs elaborating no further on what exactly had thrown a spanner into the works.
"A small problem Johnny eh? That's a big fucking problem!" Tommy ranted shaking his head as the three men entered the flat met with the sound of a newborn baby wailing in his woven bassinet, his bottom lip wobbling with each cry that furiously left his little lungs.
"Well he's small ain't he?" Johnny replied as he tilted his head looking down at the baby boy bundled in a white knitted blanket. You'd think with the the small army of children Johnny had fathered he'd be in his element. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Johnny was a natural with children, but a natural with children that had been weened, potty trained, and able enough to drive a four wheeled vehicle and shoe a horse. In basic terms, teenagers. But nonetheless wee babbies in his eyes. Newborns were all but a loud messy mystery to him.
" Jesus fucking Christ..." Tommy huffed pinching his brow as his mind frantically tried to come up with a solution as to what in the hell he was going to do now.
" Bloody hell, bloody fucking hell!" Arthur bellowed as he kicked the chair beside him, the gravity of what they had just gone hitting him far more than any sin from the long list he had committed in the past. They had made a child an orphan, and Arthur's regret and new-found faith in the almighty was about to turn into a furious rage of self-inflicted guilt.
" Hey, hey!" Tommy said cupping Arthur's head in his hands in a vice grip, trying to snap him from the pit he was intent on falling in. " Johnny take the child and go start the car" Tommy said loosening his hands as Arthur's head cast down with shame at his sudden outburst. No reading of scriptures would ever be able to tame the raging fury from igniting within him at any given moment, no matter how hard he tried. " And Johnny, light a fire. Just as we did for John" Tommy finished reminding Arthur who this was for, who they were avenging.
" He won't quit!" Arthur panicked as he held the baby in the back seat of the car, fumbling with the hand stitched blanket as Tommy drove full speed down the country lane back to Arrow house were the night of meeting with dignitaries was surely over.
" He ain't a bloody chicken is he?" Johnny said as he reached over from the passengers seat taking the bundled up child into his arms. " Like this, look" Johnny added resting the baby's head on his shoulder as he silently prayed to every ancestor to take pity on him, promising them that the next child to be birthed with his last name he'd be the epitome of a modern father to.
" Shut him up Johnny!" Tommy shouted, his jaw clenched at the increased wailing in his ear, his nerves on edge by the constant reminder of the nights events he now had to deal with as he slammed his foot down on the pedal with Arrow house in sight.
"Grace!" Tommy's voice bellowed through the walls of the their house. Every guest had already left, the grand entrance cleared of tables of the most prestigious of all champagnes imported from France mere hours ago. A night of free food, free booze and music in return for them delving into their pockets. But with the host having been otherwise occupied for most of the evening it was a night wasted, one he would begrudgingly have to endure for a second time.
" Tommy..." Grace said as she hurried down the stairs pulling her ivory night gown around her as she watched Tommy pace back and forth with a cigarette hanging from his lips in the grand hallway.
" Here. You wanted a baby, now you have one" Tommy said as he took the child from Johnny's arms placing him into hers before storming off to his office and slamming the door shut, leaving his wife wide-eyed in confusion as Johnny and Arthur stood there sheepishly without a word.
" Frances, some warm cows milk and another blanket please. That will have to do until the morning" she said softly not wanting to startle the child anymore as she gently hushed his sobs away into small whimpers and sniffles. " One of you going to tell me what happened?"
It had been an hour, three whiskys, a packet of cigarettes and the rubbing of one's brow back and forth as a pounding headache settled onto his forehead since Tommy had shut himself away in his office, shutting himself away from the consequences of the night.
" Tommy?" Graces voice quietly announced as she entered the room with the newborn bundled in her arms soundly asleep as a flash of love at seeing his wife in her element softened her husband's face. Her motherly instincts that had been waiting to be freed finally being put to use after the longing for her own child.
" I've rung the orphanage" Tommy bluntly replied, the sweet moment that had captured him bitterly snatched away by no one else but himself as he stubbed out his cigarette. " They're coming first thing tomorrow to..."
" The orphanage. Tommy..." Grace interrupted him, her angered voice raising just above a whisper in response before being cut off herself.
" I won't hear anymore on it Grace. He can't stay here, that's the end of it" Tommy stood up throwing his lighter on a stack of paperwork as he rested his hands on the mahogany desk in front of him, looming over the list of numbers he had been calling as he huffed out a cloud of smoke.
" The end of it is it Thomas?" Grace scoffed as she walked forward, her eyes narrowing in on her husband with every step she took. " You made this child an orphan, he is your responsibility now. That's the end of it" she said coming to a stop in front of his desk as her husbands jaw tightened at her words.
" What about John's kids eh? They've been made orphans, hm? Grace? " He said as his wife turned her back on him as she headed for the door, Tommy's raised voice enough to startle a small whimper of cries from the baby boy now waking up from a deep slumber.
" When will it end Tommy?" Grace said as she came to a stop at the door. Tommy's relentless need for revenge against anyone who had dared to cross him leaving a string of orphans, elderly burying their own children and children burying their own parents. " A son Tommy, isn't that what you've wanted? What we've wanted?" she sighed, a deep wave of sorrow filling her heart as she looked down at the sweet child in her arms, a child she had yearned for during the unforgiving nights she had held onto her husband as tears streamed her face. Loss after loss breaking her already shattered heart.
" He'll be no son of mine"
Six years later...
" Elbows off Oliver" Grace reprimanded with a small smile of affection at the breakfast table to the child who had grown into a dimpled cheeked young boy as she rubbed her swollen stomach.
" Yes mummy" he replied kicking his legs back and forth as he wiped his cheeks from the egg soldiers he had just enjoyed as Tommy eyed him over the newspaper in his hand, reaching to caress his wife's stomach.
" He'll be here soon" Grace smiled to her husband lacing her fingers between his as she glanced over at her son that had no knowledge of who his birth parents were or the night that had brought him into their life, never wanting to or willing to send him into turmoil with the truth at such a young age "A baby brother for you Oliver " she winked to him as he grinned from ear to ear at the idea of having a sibling all whilst trying to stack the remaining pieces of toast into a strong hold that would keep the soldiers from the fiery dragon his imagination had conjured up. His attempts rendered futile when his tower of toast came crashing down onto the recently polished floors.
" Grace..." Tommy huffed folding his newspaper in half throwing it on the table in front of him, his patience easily tested with anything the small boy did that caused the slightest of inconvenience.
" Don't play with your food darling" she corrected him as Oliver's eyes darted to his father and the irritation clearly expressed in the creases of his furrowed brow. "Go clean up those buttery cheeks before I leave ok?" She smiled as the boy nodded in response while sliding off his seat only to stand on the scattered toast below him, causing a mountain of crumbs and further mess.
" You heard your mother" Tommy huffed lighting a cigarette as he looked down at the waste of food and the disorder that came with the child that had created it. " Oliver" Tommy pinched his brow as the little boy stood there doe eyed looking up at him nervously through his lashes.
" Go on" Grace smiled reassuring him as he ran to the door. " You're to harsh with him, he's scared of you" Grace said snapping her head to Tommy as he left the room.
" He doesn't listen" Tommy stated as he stood up taking a drag of his cigarette as he watched the boy through the crack of the door running up the stairs. " Stands there looking gormless whenever I tell him to do something, just like his traitor father"
" Tommy!" Grace said as she put the breakfast dishware down, crashing them onto the table in one loud clatter of knives, forks and spoons as she hurried to shut the door. " Don't ever let him hear you talk like that!"
" Well maybe he should know, eh Grace ?" Tommy said coldly stubbing his cigarette out, the pain from his brothers death never fully grieved, only ever making itself clear through the unfair coldness he showed to the child his wife had lovingly taken in all those years ago, raising him solely on her own over the watchful eye of him always standing from afar.
" You'd like that wouldn't you Tommy? Wouldn't have to keep up your facade anymore" Grace replied as she walked around the table. " Your his father, he knows no different. Just like this one" she said resting her hand on her stomach. " You're breaking his heart Tommy" she said taking his hand trying to reason with his stubbornness and the relentless friction he had undoubtedly created in the house the three of them shared. "I'm going to miss my train" she sighed as she closed her hand around his placing a tender kiss to his lips before turning to leave as Tommy followed behind her, watching from the door as she knelt down to Oliver in the entryway.
" Can't i come?" the young boy sobbed as she brushed his tears from his rosy cheeks. " Please?" he sniffed turning to see Tommy leaning against the door frame watching from afar, always from afar.
" I'm sorry darling, not this time" she replied a look of concern in her eyes about leaving him alone with Tommy, silently wishing this one time he would push his unenthusiastic demeanor aside and at least try if not for her then the little boy who thought the world of him. The same little boy with a determination that matched the very man who would brush off any attempts he made to impress him. Tommy's hate for the man that had fathered him clouding every parental instinct in his body. " I'll bring you something back" she winked giving him a hug before she fixed her hat and hesitantly turned to the door, leaving the young boy standing in the hallway sobbing as Tommy cruelly turned his back on his tears and shut the dinning room door behind him.
" Dad, Johnny, watch me!" Oliver shouted as he precariously placed one foot in front of the other climbing the large oak tree shading the evening sun on the grounds of Arrow house as Tommy and Johnny dogs watched on from the patio door. The young boy hell-bent on getting to the very top after seeing his uncle Arthur climb the very same tree two weeks earlier as he watched on in awe.
"That 'a boy!" Johnny shouted back pulling his cigarette from his mouth as he waved back. " Found 'em Tom" he turned to Tommy in a hushed voice as he leaned in. "They live up north in Yorkshire, factory workers in the local pressing center. Dirt poor, drunk ol' man that beats his wife within an inch of her life and too many mouths to feed" Johnny added as he watched Tommy's eyes following Oliver's every move.
" He's gonna fucking fall" Tommy huffed under his breath as he stood up straight, already on guard for the inevitable. He never fucking listens, why would he never listen to him?
" Tom, you listening ?" Johnny said as he pulled the address of Oliver's uncle from his pocket. " Grace will never forgive you Tom, he's her whole world" Johnny added as Tommy took the piece of crumpled paper from him, the decision to send Oliver to his family having been made after the unexpected news of Grace's pregnancy, a decision made solely by him without her knowledge. It's better she didn't know, better for him that was. And when the day did come, he'd tell her his family claimed him back. What grounds would she have to fight them? She'd be distracted with the birth of their son, she'd forget...wouldn't she?
"Dad look!" Oliver shouted trying to get his attention, determined to show him how far he could climb, how he was as fearless as any other Shelby before he misplaced his foot and came tumbling down to the ground.
"Oliver!" Tommy shouted throwing his cigarette into the grass as he and Johnny ran over in a panic. " What did I tell you eh?! What did I fucking tell you?!" Tommy shouted, all words of expected comfort and love absent from his voice as anger and frustration took over.
"I'm sorry..." he sobbed looking up to his dad as Tommy removed his cap from his head, running his hands through his hair as he looked down at the bloody cut on his hand, every ounce of his being telling him to cradle the boy in his arms that knew nothing but him as his father.
" Ay, up you get" Johnny said helping him as he gave him a pat to his back. " Just a scratch Oliver ay? No broken bones. Nout to worry on. Ain't that right Tommy?" Johnny said in attempts to reassure the sobbing boy and Tommy who was about ready to snap again, his jaw tightened at the sight of Oliver's cheeks streamed with tears, muddy and red from the blow of the fall.
"Get inside" Tommy said placing his cap back on as he started marching back to the house, ignoring the pit of fear in his stomach at how things could have taken a turn for the worse under his watch of the boy Grace had entrusted him with. " Boys don't cry Oliver. Soldier up and wipe those tears" Tommy harshly stated as he left him and Johnny by themselves as he made his way to his office, shutting himself once again away from any more responsibility, anymore damage his presence caused.
" Come on lad" Johnny said putting his arm around him as Oliver sniffed back his tears feeling foolish that he had not only fallen but cried In front of his father, the man that never cried.
Sitting back in his leather chair Tommy rubbed the weight of the guilt that had settled on his forehead with the tips of his fingers as the night drew in, the soft hue from the crackling fire the only source of light in the blackened room he had locked himself in for the remainder of the evening. The impending birth of his child had unexpectedly thrown Tommy's thoughts into an uncomfortable disarray. Out of sight out of mind had been Tommy's only solution to the feelings that had started to arise in him that fatherhood had threatened, that fatherhood had been threatening him with for six years. Oliver was more like him than Tommy dared to admit. The child's strong will and refusal to listen one of his own cruel making. Why couldn't he love him like he already loved his unborn child? How long could he keep this up? Would he be that man, unashamedly favoring one child in front of the other? With too many questions dominating his thoughts and his wife's gentle voice absent to soothe the demons he had created for himself, Tommy did what he only knew how to do. Drink himself to the bottom of a whisky bottle. Heading up to the second floor of Arrow house with the finest bottle of Irish whisky in his hand he stopped at the top of the stairs, small whimpers and cries coming from the room at the end of the hallway capturing his attention. Oliver's room.
" Frances!" Tommy called out as he waited for the the housekeeper to deal with what he knew he couldn't. "Fuck sake" he huffed under his breath after waiting in place for someone to come before he found himself walking down the hallway to Oliver's room. There, with his knees curled up to his chest Tommy watched though the crack of the door as Oliver rubbed his hand back and forth over the bandage wrapped tightly around his injured wrist, his small frame illuminated by the cast of the gentle moonlight shining through his bedroom window. Running his hand down his face Tommy opened the door as Oliver quickly turned around pulling the blankets up to his chin.
"Oliver?" Tommy questioned placing the bottle of whisky on the side cabinet as he walked over. " Why aren't you asleep?" Tommy said more bluntly than he intended to as he stood by the bed, feeling a wave of unease wash over him as he noted the small blanket Oliver was clutching onto. The very same blanket he was wrapped in the night they had found him. Grace had kept it, something he would have known if he had ever sat and read him a bedtime story, if he had ever woke in the night to hush the nightmares away from his worried mind, if he had ever even entered his room in all of the six years he had lived under his roof." Let me see" Tommy said in a gentler tone as he sat beside him on the bed. " Oliver let me see" he said when no response came from the whimpers the small child was trying to stifle. Boys don't cry. " Please?" Tommy sighed resting his hand on the child's back as his head fell into his other, the guilt of six year of taking the life of his parents settling on his shoulders pushing him further into his elbow digging into his leg as his head grew heavy with regret. Sniffling, Oliver turned around with his hand out as Tommy cradled it gently in his own, the difference in size causing Tommy's throat to go dry. The hate for his father's betrayal that of a grown mans doing, not this young boys that Tommy had cruelly burdened him with for six years " First of many battle wounds eh?" Tommy smiled to the young boy as Oliver's face stayed unchanged, unresponsive to Tommy trying to ease his worry. Had he done this? Made the child is his care so frightened of him he couldn't even a coax a smile from him?
" Soldiers don't cry" Oliver said pulling his hand away, his bottom lip turning down at the thought he wasn't as strong as his father, a soldier like him.
" They do Oliver" Tommy said as his brows knitted together at the thought that young Oliver had taken his words to heart. What else had Tommy said in the past six years, what else had he unknowingly taught him?
" You said boys..."
" And I shouldn't have " Tommy answered before he could finish as the boy wiped his tears from his youthful cheeks whilst a small silence filled the room, the strain from their relationship left empty with nothing further to say as Tommy desperately tried to search for the comforting words he knew Oliver needed to hear. " You want your mum don't you?" Tommy said swallowing harshly as he turned his head to the rays of moonlight cast on the wooden floor " I'm sorry Oliver, I'm..." Tommy huffed pinching his brow as he clasped his hand around the child's shoulder. "... I'm not very good at this. You gotta help me out here. Will you help me?" he said as he gently squeezed his shoulder, rubbing his thumb back and forth as the barriers Tommy had kept up started to fall around him as he desperately scrambled to gain back the wasted years he had been adored, loved unconditionally, a love he had never once reciprocated . " Get some rest" Tommy sighed patting Oliver's shoulder, his plea for help left unanswered as he stood up when a small hand grabbed hold of him.
" Tell me a story, please?" Oliver asked as he sat up in his bed looking up to the man he had always looked up to, always waiting for an ounce of affection.
" That what your mum does eh?" Tommy replied as he sat back down, adjusting the covers lovingly around the boy, if not a little overly enthusiastically as Oliver was now in a tight cocoon of covers and blankets with his arms securely fastened by his sides. " A story..." Tommy mused aloud, his eyes looking up at the ceiling as his brain mulled over all the potential tales that could see him sleeping in the guest room for an undefined amount of time if Grace ever found out, when the corners of his mouth turned up into a smile you would think had never seen the light of day let alone witnessed by anyone but himself. Arthur had made him swear in blood to never mention the day his gangly legs had gotten in his way causing him to fall from would could have been the very same tree Oliver had fell from earlier that day in attempts impress a girl three decades ago. " Arthur made me swear never to tell anyone, but you won't tell him I told you, right? Tommy said as the boy nodded his head, understanding the severity of pinky swears and the fate of death if you ever spilled.
" Cross my heart" he nodded with all the seriousness he could muster as his little face twisted into a stern expression, a worthy match to Tommy's own infamous pout. He was a Shelby after all, Tommy thought to himself as his heart suddenly filled with pride.
" That's my boy" Tommy said as he turned to sit beside him, wrapping his arm around his shoulder as Oliver nestled into his side " My son eh? Tommy nudged him into his body as the boys eyes beamed up at his father's loving gaze. "My son..."
