It is interesting how Thomas react to the different "love interests" as compared to Grace.

With May or Lizzie, he didn't act affectionate or gentle, no words of affection even the s3x part is based on lust or Tommys need to let it out.

With Grace, he was so gentle with her acted so lovey dovey was so damn affectionate with her. He always wanted to impress Grace but with other he did not give a crap about it 💖

It is funny how some fans claim that Tommy was not in love with Grace at all and in love with Lizzie all along. I still did not receive a single valid answer to how fans think it is love if dear Tommy looked dead in the marriage with lizzie, treated her like shit cheated on her .

Side note: Grace look so beautiful in her green dress (S2) and with white and pink dress (S2), the light brown coat with the light purple and headband (S3) and the simple yet elegant blouses in S1 ....im so bias HAHAHAHA its clear that Tommy was HEAD over heels for her (why wouldn't he??)

Heyyyy nonnie !!! I'M SO SORRY IT TOOK ME THIS LONG TO ANSWER.( I had this in my drafts but couldn't post sooner because life got in the way).

I think tommy’s “fondness” for lizzie and may stemmed from what he could gain from being in a relationship with them, convenience, control, loyalty, power, money...  with grace it was different, his heart was involved. Tommy wanted to be with grace and wanted their relationship to work . That’s why he tried to convince her to stay after she informed him she wouldn’t be there when he’d come back from the races .

He wanted grace to stay. But he also thought what he was offering to that beautiful and incredibly smart woman who breathed life and class wasn’t enough, that she didn’t belong in a shit hole called small heath, and that  being a peaky blinder’s “wife” wasn’t enough for a woman of her “social standing”. That’s that train of thoughts that led to him outright telling her, he knew she wasn’t born to be with a man like him. But he was turning things around.

What tommy loved first and foremost wasn’t money, sex, loyalty power, but grace. He loved GRACE, that’s why he was always trying to impress her. why his main goal was to make her happy, be the man she thought he could be and the man he thought she deserved. 

Because he was emotionally connected to her, tommy lavished more attention on her than he did on lizzie and may, he showered her with kisses, love, affectionate gestures and was the sweetest he could be with her.

 You mentioned an interesting fact nonnie, and I want to mention another one here . We saw lizzie and may trying to “win” tommy’s affection and convince him that they could be happy together  [ In season 4 during her pregnancy announcement, we saw lizzie trying to emotionally connect with tommy and sell him a possible happy relationship between them . And in 2X05 we saw may letting tommy know that she had feelings for him , asking him to let grace go, and literally telling him she would will win him while he was trying to breakup with her .] but the only woman we saw him trying to win over was grace.

The peaky blinders costumers used  colors to hint at crucial character traits,  emotions, expectations and to mostly help symbolize what tommy saw when he looked at his “partners”, his feelings, thoughts and desire at key moment in his development.

 Throughout all of peaky blinders season 1 grace often wore white because she represented tommy’s happiness, peace for his agonizing mind... hope for him in a cruel, hard, bleak, violent environment, a way out of his loneliness, a promise for a better future...basically she [represented] was his salvation....  

Yes, white symbolize elegance, but it also symbolize peace, innocence and delicacy. And grace was definitely none of these 3 things in season 1, we saw that woman kill 3 irish men... she was angry, had an unhealthy obsession with revenge and was struggling with her demons just like tommy was struggling with his...You know what else is associated with the color white ?! Peace, hope, elegance, innocence, salvation, perfection , and grace represented all these things FOR TOMMY.

Honestly, I’ve never really thought about the stories behind may and lizzie’ “themes clothes”, or their clothes colors meanings nonnie.  The only time I thought it was fitting to draw a contrast between grace and tommy’s “other love interest” was during grace and may’ conversation ( because of  that who will tommy choose cliffhanger). 

In that scene may was wearing a red “dress”, symbolic for desire, lust, love, excitement , passion( a short lived feeling). That color  is also associated with  power, strength ( *cough, cough* business);

 And grace was wearing a pink and white outfit, colors associated with love, happiness, hope... The color pink , is thought to be a calming and relaxing color, It has a deeply joyful vibe to it. Like being “home”, a familiar friendly place where there are no worries, you are never lonely and you have everything in life that you ever wanted...

Their outfits colors are at odds and can reflect what they both were expecting from tommy, can serve as a visual indicator for what tommy saw when he looked at them , what they represented for him, and can also hint at tommy’s dilemma, LOVE or BUSINESS.

And Why do you think thomas only has vision of Grace when she is in S1?

I think he sees her in her season 1 outfits because of what that “version” of grace represents, hope, happiness... steven knight used that  “version” of grace to show the very difficult paradoxical situation tommy was in...grace/ her presence used to symbolize tommy’s happiness, salvation, hope etc but after her death it symbolizes his agony,his PTSD, loneliness, and serves as a visual indicator for tommy haunted and tormented mind.

Hey!!!  2X05 ? **Rubbing hands together ** where do we start?

Perhaps here...with a quick summarization and contextualization of tommy and grace’s relationship/ feeelings for each other, and love lives.

Tommy was in love with grace, and contemplated walking away from his business, his family and his friends for her, because she was the only woman he ever envisioned his life with. But he let her go. And tried to move on and forget her in may’ arms, which he failed to do. Despite his best efforts he couldn’t get her out of his system. 

After tommy let her go, grace went to new york and tried to move on with her life. She married a rich, sweet and nice man. But two years after their breakup she was still thinking about him. That’s why she wrote him several letters,why she called him, and why she wanted to see him, when she came back to england. 

“And the way Tommy couldn't even speak when he heard Grace's voice 😍 He never did that with Lizzie or May.”

 I didn’t read too much into that moment. I honestly thought it was a mix of a lot of things/ emotions [ stress, fear, anxiety, anger...he was feeling too much emotions at once, that’s  why we saw him trying to recollect himself just before he answers the phone ] . Arthur and michael were imprisoned, campbell was threatening to put ada in harm’s way, and was trying to get him killed, his whole business was in disarray [ the scene before grace’s phone call was a conversation between tommy and campbell, conversation that ended with a teary-eyed tommy.] and adding grace’s phone call to the mix was just too much for him... That’s why he told her  it wasn’t a good time_ But he still took the time to talk with her because she’s “ grace”, and in his mind, she always comes first.

REUNION SCENE

They are both reserved and cautious when they see each other for the first time,  because there is an uncertainty at play_ They don’t know what the other feels or is thinking. Why did she/he come here, does he/she miss me as much as I miss him/her, does he/she still has feelings for me, is she/he in as much utter misery as I am without him/her.... so many questions, that need to be answered. 

Tommy and grace can’t take their eyes of each other, and you can tell by the way they are looking at one another that the love and physical attraction is still there . And tommy talking about his plan for the night adds more sexual tension to the already existing tension between them. “ I lit a fire in the bedroom upstairs....Then I was gonna tell you, I hadn’t spent a day without thinking about you. And then we were gonna go upstairs and sleep together.” ; Grace is confused by what that tommy’s speech makes her feel, you can literally see it on her face...I bet my life she has butterflies in her stomach during that whole speech ( I know, I do, watching this  scene , lol) , that’s probably why she breaks eye contact.

Tommy admits it,  he has been thinking about her . But because he’s tommy SHELBY, he needs to let her know that, yes, he thought about her a lot, but he’s not overly attached to her and his happiness doesn’t depend on her , “I changed my mind...So you can go.” ( that man... a whole walking paradox. He says a nice thing to her, then acts like an asshole...lol, he’s clearly pulling a push and pull game on her... and challenging, testing her, will she stay?will she leave? will she give up on me...us ? does she really wants us...me?

It’s a bold move. Grace looks as bloody perplexed as the audience, and could  walk out at any moment...but she doesn’t, because  she wants to be there and her questions need answers. The word guilty is written all over her face, she probably believes he still resents her for what she did to him two years ago. But that smirk tommy can’t surpress...that little corner of his mouth that turned up into a smile tell us how happy he is to see her.    

  [ Thanks to his little game, he now has  answers to some of his questions...He  knows grace is happy in new york, he knows her husband is rich and sweet and kind to her, and he also knows that she didn’t go there for sex because she doesn’t love him anymore ].

 No more challenge, antagonism and testing grace. Tommy comes clean, and tells her that his whole opening gambit was to skip talking about the past, and that his real plan was to impress her( tommy romeo, isn’t he sweet?) , of course, he really just wants to take her out to meet a movie star. This is grace and tommy we’re talking about...he’s always trying to deserve her.

And what was bound to happen after a perfect night out, between two people  who love and miss each other dearly  is happening. 

Tommy and grace are languorously kissing while grace is trying to get answers to her questions.Tommy “do you have someone?” , tommy ignores the question and keeps kissing her. Grace “The coin landed the wrong way ?” tommy “It couldn’t have worked.” .  She asks the same question, again, because she needs an answer to that question, “tommy do you have someone?” Tommy knows grace really wants to know if he has someone, and won’t stop asking that question till she gets her answer.

 So, he takes a deep breath, looks at her, and tells her ,“ I have a racehorse. She’s gonna win the derby.” He could mention may, grace asked the same question twice, but he doesn’t.  And won’t mention her, because he’s trying to win grace over, and mentioning may could ruin his chances with grace. That’s why he gives her a half truth, and grace decides to believe it....in order to be able to completely lose herself in tommy’s arms, grace needs and wants it to be true, so she accepts that answer .

OK,ok, I think we will go straight to the “after sex” part, because this is getting too long ( they obviously made love to each other like there was no tomorrow).

The tension between them is back. Their feelings for each other are even more clear to them after that intense love making session they just had. But they still haven’t realized their love isn’t one sided. Grace had a lot of questions and tommy answers weren’t satisfying to her. She asked him over and over again if he has someone, she wanted him to tell her, he still loves her... his answers were supposed to be the cataclysm that would've set everything in motion...

Tommy knows grace is happily  married[ because she told him so ] , and will sail back to new york with the man she loves. So he doesn’t even try to ask her to stay.

During their last conversation we have a “baby” reveal, grace tells tommy , her husband and her are trying for a baby... Something tommy didn’t see coming!!! 

He’s literally like wut !?!?!! as if the thought of grace having a baby with someone else never crossed his mind. Grace is married and the next logical step after a marriage are babies, but the idea of grace having a child with another man...her husband doesn’t sit well with his spirit.

His reaction, his silence are not only out of surprise, anger, pain but also jealousy. that man is married to the woman he loves, and is about to have a baby with her....he has eveything tommy ever wanted. If tommy had any doubts at all about his feelings for her and what he really wanted , here, he realizes that grace being with someone else really stings and hurts beccause he wants to be that “someone”. 

Tommy is upset, confused, hurt...and wants to know why she is there, with him tonight, “ The doctor believes it’s surely me who’s at fault.” After that answer tommy is relieved, apologizes, tries to comfort her, and then asks if he can see her again.

I want to camp out in this  for a bit....

 That moment where tommy caresses grace’s arm while looking into her eyes is so soft and intimate and vulnerable. Annabelle Wallis and Cillian Murphy  are unbelievable in this scene. They harness their character’s emotions and reservation to display them so perfectly. You can literally see tommy’s eyes and general disposition soften as he asks to see her again and says her name  “grace”. CAN I SEE YOU AGAIN.

But his request is met with silence. And that silence is synonym of “NO”. No, because he didn’t give her satisfactory answers, no because he didn’t give her any valid reason to blow up her marriage for him, no she isn't going to see him again , even though she clearly wants to. 

After challenging grace to “go”, tommy is now challenging her to tell her husband about them “tell him the truth”. Prove me you love me,... PROVE ME YOU LOVE ME. SHOW ME YOU REALLY WANT TO BE WITH ME. He keeps testing her because he’s not quite sure of her feelings for him . This moment between them is the reason we’ll later get the “I was right not to tell him. I could’ve phoned him and lied but I didn’t .Just tell me that I was right not to phone and lie. Agree with that, tommy.”  Tommy “Yes, Yes grace”, the  “Because the thing is, I LOVE YOU NOT HIM”  tommy “that is a thing” and that “YOU ONCE SAID TO ME THAT MEN LIKE US CAN NEVER BE LOVED. SHE LOVES ME, SHE TOLD ME.... SHE LOVES ME.” moments. ( Excuse me, I need to scream, 2X05 and 2X06 really gave us the best tommy x grace moments and quotes.) .

HIIIIII!!! First of all, im in love with your analysis. If you were to write a book on your analysis on Tommy and Grace, i would buy it! You break it down like a police officer on a case and for that thank you! 💞Its a therapy session for me as a stan of Grace.

OK, Now let’s fucking talk about TOMMY SHELBYx ATTRACTION x LOVE.

  Yes, tommy found grace physically attracting and aesthetically pleasing. I mean have you looked at her ?  which normally constituted man wouldn’t ?! She looked TF good !!! So yes,  he was physically attracted to grace, and that’s that physical/aesthetic attraction that inevitably, led him to want to spend more time with her and get to know her on a deeper level. YES, it fueled that initial spark, but that’s not what made him fall for her!! that’s not the reason he couldn’t get over her several years after her death.

Tommy came across a hundred pretty women but only one melted his  heart... GRACE. And why’s that ?! because there was a sense of belonging, security, togetherness, homeliness, connection in their mutual bonding, which EMOTIONALLY tied him to her...

 What made him fall for her was the bond they built, their similarities, the fact that she brought out the best in him, made him a happier person, and made him want to be a better man...

She saw him , he saw her...and they understood each other,... 

people love to talk about tommy’s attraction to grace, which is ok. But I just want to point out that all attractions will not get converted as love. Especially appearance or sexual attractions, may and lizzie can attest to this statement, they experienced it at firsthand.

Tommy still longing for grace,  a woman who “betrayed” him and broke his heart in the process,( two years after they broke up) only cemented the true depth of his feelings for her...

                             HE LOVED HER....

His heart was no longer his. But HERS, it belonged to her, the woman who unexpectedly entered his untamned heart and never left. HE LOVED HER!!!  HE LOVED HER despite her deception. 

People can try to trick themselves into thinking that tommy wasn’t in love with grace, but her beauty, aesthetic... if they want. But that won’t change the fact that grace  inhabited tommy’s thoughts , heart and soul.

 Their breakup wouldn’t have been that heavy in his heart if she didn’t own it and haunt his thoughts. He tried to get over her and forget about her_  “ Maybe it’s time you forgot about her?” “ Forget about who ?” . He burned her letter, slept with several women , slept with may, but it didn’t work. Because,

 his heart belonged to her. And him loving her wasn’t up to him but his heart.  

 It wasn’t up to him to decice whether or not he should still love her, think about her, miss talking to her, miss seeing her pretty face and beautiful smile, miss kissing her and miss the way she made him feel...NO IT WASN’T... his heart chose her, It chose her because she was the “only” woman that succeeded in making it smile.  

That man was in utter misery  after she left for new york, because he loved and missed her, not because of some superficial reasons.

Yes he treated her like his queen, because she was !!!! she owned his ass [ lol ] and grace knew it ( and tommy owned hers). Hii, what is your analysis of Tommy and Lizzie's relationship in S6? Many Lizzie fans say that he forgot about Grace and fell in love with Lizzie, I saw the opposite.

Season 6 tells you everything you need to know about tommy’s love life, and by everything , l mean EVERYTHIIIIIIIING!!!!

Ok, here’s my opinion below:

1. I want to start by pointed out the fact that, that season 6 has once and for all finally put to the rest the debate on whether or not tommy was in love with lizzie. The fandom has been saying for years that tommy was never in love with grace, but the idea of grace. And that the woman he loved, the one he’s been in love with  since the beginning of peaky blinders was lizzie_The fandom claims that he only treated her the way he did, because he loved her and was afraid of his feelings for her ,and that’s also the reason he wouldn’t let her in( And by treated her the way he did, l mean disrespecting her on a regular basis, repeatedly cheating on her as if he was deprived sexually, always putting her last, treating her like a disposable partner or an object he owns )....

this was never a debate ( nor  facts, just wishful thinking ) and tommy was never and is not in love with lizzie. Grace was tommy’ love and his chance for happiness, and when she died that chance died with her .

2. This whole season was a reminder, a confirmation and a sum up of everything we already knew about tommy’ and lizzie’ dynamic. A reminder of Lizzie’ unrealistic expectations in her marriage, a further confirmation of tommy’ inability to be a faithful husband to lizzie and give her the love, attention and respect she desperately wanted from him...basically it was a season 5  sum up with different or subtle nuances and contexts.

3. This season to me is a clear affirmation that tommy was never in love with lizzie, and that he can never give her what she’s always wanted and expected from him which is his love and undivided attention. He was never home, never there for her when she needed him, he didn’t support her emotionally when she needed him most( after ruby’s death), and was constantly cheating on her. He cheated on her several times in season 5, we saw him cheating on her this season with a brunette when he was in Boston, and we also saw him cheating on her with mosley’ fiancé,  diana... That man cheated on her throughout their marriage. And why’s that ?!  

Because that’s not the woman he really wanted to be with... his heart  didn’t choose her!!!

Because he settled for lizzie, he sought replacements for the emotional connection he didn’t have with her. Mistresses (cheating on her), work, and  his favorite thing was spending his time away( trips) ,since he stopped drinking and doing opium...He became addicted to anything that filled the gap within him. And that’s why he couldn’t stop cheating on lizzie, working...Lizzie understandably felt lonely and unhappy in her 7/8 years marriage with tommy, and how could she not ? When she was the only one emotionally invested in their relationship .

4. Tommy realized that lizzie didn’t deserve the pain he put her through and learned to respect her. That’s why he was nicer and more respectful of her this season than he was in the previous seasons, and why he tried to honor his marriage to some extent. Because she’s familly and he cares about her, he tried to give her more attention ( but still kept it superficial ), e.g. when lizzie wrapped both of her hands around tommy’s to remind him that she was there and needed his attention too. Lizzie “Do you feel that, do you feel anything? You know you talk, as if you’re watching everything on a screen.” tommy “When we go home...when we go home, we’ll give the kids to frances , and then you and me will go to bed”  lizzie   “and I”ll be the next item, everything is on the list”. In that scene lizzie was again, trying to connect with a physically present but mentally absent tommy.

There are some things tommy did and said to lizzie because he believed that’s what he was supposed to do and say as her husband, and not because he wanted to do or say those things, that’s why lizzie called him out on ticking boxes, and why I believe he said the line “in this moment, in this room, I love you” line. And also , why lizzie herself didn’t believe that “love confession”.  

5. How can you fall in love with someone you’re unwilling to let in? Tommy’s subconcious and whole being categorically refused and still refuse to let lizzie in, several years after he said he’ll let her in sometimes. Lizzie in season 5  “and you let me in sometimes” tommy  “ I’ll let you in sometimes”,  season 6, four years later “you never let me in”. In 6X04 , we have tommy once again avoiding emotional connection and keeping lizzie at safe distance when he removed lizzie’s hand from his shoulder,  “not yet, not yet..”

( and this is a woman he’s known for 16 years...16 years during which they had an off and on “relationship”...16 years and he still wouldn’t let her in...not yet, not yet!!!) .

All she wanted was to feel close to him and all he wanted was to be left alone...and this was after their daughter’ death. That man is unwilling to emotionally bond with her, and you can’t be in love with a person you can’t emotionally connect with. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

As I already said, tommy cared about lizzie, He loved her but wasn’t in love with her. He loved her the way he loved his family members. 

To put it in a nutshell ,

it was a family love and not a romantic love.

I’m not sure that there has been any point in the show where we’re meant to believe that tommy  was falling for lizzie…Ok, let me rephrase it ...

there hasn’t been any point in the show where we’re meant to believe that tommy was falling or fell for lizzie. 

We lived long enough( and by long enough I mean 6 seasons, 14 years) in tommy' and lizzie's dynamic to know that he was never in love with her and that, the supposed "love confession" was a lie, because it didn’t match tommy’s actions and behavior. And lizzie knew it too .  She’s known that man for 16 years, So she knows when he’s lying . That’s why she called him out on it "you sound like you’re ticking a fucking  box, and I don’t konw what’s inside the box . Never have you let me in. Even though I know the combination to the safe”. 

 SHE KNEW HE DIDN'T MEAN IT.

NONNIE THE SHOW IS OoooOOOVER!!

And it ended with 1.lizzie finally realizing that tommy wasn’t in love with her and that he will never love her like she loves him, 2. her walking away and recognizing that she deserved more than what he could offer.

IT IS CANON THAT TOMMY COULDN'T BE THE HUSBAND SHE DREAMED OF BECAUSE OF HIS EMOTIONAL UNAVAILABILITY.( everything that will happen in the movie is a bonus ).
