Oulu is five hours north from Helsinki by train and a good deal colder and darker each winter than the Finnish capital. From November to March its 220,000 residents are lucky to see daylight for a couple of hours a day and temperatures can reach the minus 30s. However, this is not the reason I sense a darkening of the Finnish dream that brought me here six years ago.

In 2018, moving to Finland seemed like a no-brainer. One year earlier I had met my Finnish partner while working away in Oulu. My adopted home of Italy, where I had lived for 10 years, had recently elected a coalition government with the far-right Matteo Salvini as interior minister, while my native UK had voted for Brexit. Given Finland’s status as a beacon of progressive values, I boarded a plane, leaving my lecturing job and friends behind.

Things have gone well. My partner and I both have stable teaching contracts, me at a university where my mostly Finnish colleagues are on the whole friendlier than the taciturn cliche that persists of Finns (and which stands in puzzling contradiction to their status as the world’s happiest people).

Notwithstanding this, I feel a sense of unease as Finland’s prime minister Petteri Orpo’s rightwing coalition government has set about slashing welfare and capping public sector pay. Even on two teachers’ salaries my partner and I have felt the sting of inflation as goods have increased by 20% in three years. With beer now costing €8 or more in a city centre pub, going out becomes an ever rarer expense.

Those worse off than us face food scarcity. A survey conducted by the National Institute for Health and Welfare found 25% of students struggling to afford food, while reductions in housing benefit mean tenants are being forced to move or absorb the shortfall in rent payments. There are concerns that many unemployed young people could become homeless.

Healthcare is faring little better. Finland’s two-tier system means that while civil servants and local government employees (including teachers) paradoxically enjoy private health cover, many other people face long waiting lists. Not having dental cover on my university’s plan, I called for a public dental appointment in April. I was put on callback and received a text message stating I’d be contacted when the waiting list reopened. Six months later, I am still waiting. A few years ago I could expect to wait two months at most.

The current government, formed by Orpo’s National Coalition party (NCP) last year in coalition with the far-right Finns party, the Swedish People’s party of Finland and the Christian Democrats, has been described as “the most rightwing” Finland has ever seen – a position it appears to relish.

Deputy prime minister and finance minister Riikka Purra – the Finns’ party leader – has been linked to racist and sometimes violent comments made online back in 2008. The party’s xenophobia is clearly influencing policymaking and affecting migrants. As a foreigner, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to feeling a certain chill as anti-immigrant rhetoric ramps up.

A survey by the organisation Specialists in Finland last year found that most highly qualified workers would consider leaving Finland if the government’s planned tightening of visa requirements went ahead (that proposal, which extended residence time required for Finnish citizenship from four to as many as eight years has now become law). Luckily, I am a permanent resident under the Brexit agreement.

With the coalition intent on ending Finland’s long history of welfarism in just one term, there is a risk (and hope among progressives) that it may go too far, inviting a backlash. We arguably saw signs of this in the European election in the summer, when Li Andersson won the highest number of votes for an EU election candidate in Finland. Andersson, who was education minister in Sanna Marin’s former centre-left coalition government (which lost to the NCP in April 2023), ran on a progressive red-green ticket of increased wealth equality and measures to tackle the climate crisis. She has also been critical of emergency laws blocking asylum seekers from crossing Finland’s eastern border, arguing that it contravenes human rights obligations.

Andersson’s party, the Left Alliance, chose a new leader this month, the charismatic feminist author Minja Koskela, who was elected to Helsinki’s council in 2021 after a period as secretary of the Feminist party, and as a member of parliament in 2023. Koskela argues: “People are widely frustrated with the government’s discriminatory policy and cuts to culture, social and health services, education and people’s livelihood. It is possible to turn this frustration into action.” (Full disclosure: I’m a member of the party and have helped coordinate its local approach to immigrants.)

It remains to be seen if she can build on Andersson’s EU success. Although the popular media-savvy figure appears to relish the challenge of turning the party into an election winner, Koskela faces a huge challenge. The party struggles to poll at more than 10% nationally, aside from a brief high of 11% in July. A place in government is nonetheless possible. But Marin’s Social Democratic party (SDP) of Finland (now led by Antti Lindtman), has topped the national opinion polls 12 out of 14 times since April 2023.

Meanwhile, the Finns party is polling at 16%, down from the 20.1% vote they gained in the election. These figures point to one thing: another possible SDP-led coalition government in the next parliament by the summer of 2027. This would probably include the Left Alliance and the Green League, among others. And such a coalition would aim to undo a lot of the damage done by the right.

But until then, there will be more damage to come. So while there is clearly hope for an end in sight to the country’s political darkness three years hence, this will bring little solace now to poor people, migrants, and the squeezed middle class as the long Finnish winter closes in.

Some 65,000 unionized hospital workers in Ontario have been awarded a pay increase of six per cent over two years in an arbitration decision.

Workers represented by the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions — CUPE (OCHU-CUPE) and SEIU Healthcare — will have their pay increased by three per cent per year for two years, with a boost to health and dental benefits also awarded, according to the union.

The union represents groups including personal support workers, porters, food servicing and technicians in both pharmacy and X-Ray.

The same workers were given a retroactive pay increase of 6.25 per cent over three years for the period they were capped by the now-cancelled Ford government wage restraint legislation.

“Today’s arbitration decision will lift the spirits of frontline hospital workers who are struggling with impossible workloads in a staff retention crisis,” OCHU-CUPE president Michael Hurley said in a statement. [...]

US DISABILITY RIGHTS LAW EXPANSION

The US federal government has drafted a proposal to require health care providers to make real accommodations for disabled patients, "to ensure that MDE used by public entities to offer services, programs, and activities at places such as hospitals and other health care facilities is accessible to individuals with disabilities. MDE includes things like medical examination tables, weight scales, dental chairs, and radiological diagnostic equipment. Without accessible MDE, individuals with disabilities may not be afforded an equal opportunity to receive medical care, including routine examinations, which could have serious implications for their health. A lack of accessible MDE may also undermine the quality of care received by individuals with disabilities, “leading to delayed and incomplete care, missed diagnoses, exacerbation of the original disability, and increases in the likelihood of the development of secondary conditions.”

much like the actual horrortale comic, Monsters resorted to eating human flesh in order to survive, in my HC, this includes Sans. Years of despreation and hunger eventually drive him to start eating the humans he hunts.

Axe used to feel guilt, at least in the beginning. Once Undyne cracked his poor skull, well, he was just too lazy to feel anything.

He's too far gone to care anymore, and fuck anyone who tries to make him feel guilty. He kept his brother alive, his community alive. That's all he cares about.

He's quiet, The skull injury makes it difficult for him to speak. He's not entirely mute but he his mind moves to fast for his mouth to move. So a lot of the times he'll say parts of a sentence, and it may be disjointed, or he may speak slowly.

he also struggles with memory loss. Remebering things that have happened recently is really tough on him. So hes taken to carrying around a notebook, when he wants to or needs to remember something he writes it down. Then he can just check whenever he needs to.

he stares. Seriously, when he likes something (or someone) he just looks at them. You can tell when he's looking at someone he likes because they'll have his full attention, and if he likes, likes them? His remaining eyelight will be all blown up.

It's cute, creepy, but cute

Once the barrier is broken he struggles to find something to do. Axe spent years just surviving, he never had to worry about what other people thought of him, or how to get a job, or how to get and maintain finances. His skull injury and processing issues make this even harder.

so he bounces jobs for a while, somedays he's a hotdog vendor, sometimes he's a retail clerk, sometimes he's a security guard. Sometimes he's unemployed. You can never guess what he's up to.

Crooks:

Crooks feels horrible surviors guilt. In the first few years of being on the surface it's something that made him horribly depressed. Even if he hide said depression. He suffers from nightmares of the Underground and all the friends and neighbours he lost for years. It's something he never really gets over.

He wears braces! Crooks needs a lot of dental surgerys and treatments in order to correct the years of abuse Queen (horrortale Undyne) put his teeth through.

When all the identitys of the humans who fell underground and were killed are revealed, Papyrus writes letters to all their families. Apologising on behalf of everyone.

He gets a job as a nurse! After years of study (and therapy) he starts working in Ebott hospital.

He consitently wins employee of the month once he starts working

He and Axe still live together, they don't ever want to live apart from one another. Not after what they went through. So if you wanna smooch Crooks or Axe. You gotta accept the other brother. they're a package deal

he forgives Queen (ht undyne) and Doctor (ht Alphys) for what they did. He doesn't speak to either of them, however.

He largly still remains the same happy skeleton as before, just a lot of his naivite and innocence has been washed away. He's more of a hopful realist then an optimist now.

He and Axe have a cute three bedroom home in the suburbs. It's a quaint cottage. Perfect for the two of them. It's quiet to, which is important for when either of them are struggling with an episode.

did I mention that? Yeah both of them occasionally have flashbacks to the Underground. Sometimes they forget they're not starving, sometimes they're so stuck in a flashback that they end up physically lashing out.

28 November 2024: Crown Prince Hussein inaugurated the revamped Ghor Al Mazraa Comprehensive Healthcare Centre aimed at improving the quality of services.

He listened to briefings by Health Minister Firas Al Hawari and Himmetna Charity Organisation CEO Fadia Samara on the project, which comes as part of an agreement between the ministry and Himmetna to revamp 25 comprehensive healthcare centres in various regions of the Kingdom.

Hawari said the inauguration of such a centre aligns with the Economic Modernisation Vision and the Ministry of Health's strategy aiming to provide the best comprehensive medical care to citizens and contribute to alleviating pressure on hospitals.

For her part, Samara said the project introduced internal medicine, orthopaedic, family and community medicine, and paediatric clinics; a physiotherapy department, a recovery and rehabilitation department, a mammogram room, a telemedicine room, and a waiting system; as well as the expansion of the emergency department, the laboratory, internal clinics, maternal and child healthcare, and dental clinics.

The project was built on an area of 1,916 square metres, at a cost amounting to JD2.25 million collected as financial and in-kind donations from citizens, the private sector, and civil society organisations.

The Princess Basma Comprehensive Healthcare Centre in Amman’s Al Muhajireen area was revamped and inaugurated by the Crown Prince last year as per the signed agreement, under which Himmetna provides funding, planning and supervision, and the Ministry of Health provides logistical and administrative support, as well as medical equipment.

After meeting with donors who supported the Karak centre revamp project, Crown Prince Hussein expressed appreciation of Himmetna organisation, the donors, and all workers at the centre, stressing that the project is an example of successful partnerships between the government, civil society organisations, and the private sector to improve the quality of services for citizens.

It really bothers me how I will never relate to or feel nostalgic to late 2000s to early 2010s post about elementary school.. I see picture of the inside of buses, school activities, and all of that, I can’t relate to any of it.. I didn’t go to elementary school and I only did 2 months of 7th grade and 1 week as a freshman and 1 fucking day as a sophomore, the rest of my schooling was at alternative schools that sucked and homeschooling which I can’t remember most of it cause at the time I was still actively being abused, I see my three youngest siblings and how they are still in school, how they got to learn and have friends, and I have none of that.. my two older siblings also have been to and completed high school, I have nothing.. Is medicine a well known concept? How do the common people feel about it? Is it safe? Is it a safer alternative then getting nothing done?

What is the most common thing people go to when they’re seriously hurt? Is there anything that can be done? Does it differ among classes, races, etc?

Is healing and medicine done through science, experience/skills, magic, plants, a bit of everything? (I personal like a combination of magic and the real world grasp on health)

Is medicine easy to access? (Or is it like the United States?) If not, why? If so, what made that possible?

If doctors are a thing what are they truly called? (Healer, shaman, cleric, fantasy names, a mixture, even more) What role in society do they play? How are they viewed culturally? 

What medicines are available? Are they more commonly essential oils, serums, pills/liquids, a mixture, or more? What are the materials that make these more common medicines? Do these materials have a well known side effect that affects your world?

How does medical attention differ in your worldbuilding? 

(Midwives becoming powerful in a world with thousands of different reproductive systems across species, anthropomorphic doctors helping a buff shark person who is crying about their dental, magic medics in battle healing their comrades from a distance) These are some fun examples I pulled from my worldbuilding.

Is there hospitals or an equivalent? What are these establishments like? Are they government regulated? Is it a place an injured would enjoy being at?

How does this all change when war is involved?

Does religion play a role? How does culture effect medicine, good and bad? Is medicine genuinely helpful?

Because despite the fact that D.U.M.P. is a bureaucratic nightmare and the government system is an absolute mess, we gotta bear in mind that the empowered world doesn't cost anything for the magical university and also actively encourage mental health services

But the thing is, empowered people also crossover with the unempowered world constantly, and I'm sure there are some things that are simpler to access through unempowered businesses. And, consider that if a magical person gets knocked out in a car accident, they'd be taken to an unempowered hospital by first responders, rather than a magic healers place

So, I would say that D.U.M.P. and maybe some empowered business run an exclusively-empowered insurance company for interaction with the unempowered world (like vision and dental, and sure medical) but if it's anything like the academy system, maybe it's at no cost to the empowered community or steeply discounted?
