The REAL AI automation threat to workers
Tumblr media
I'm Kickstarting the audiobook for The Bezzle, the sequel to Red Team Blues, narrated by @wilwheaton! You can pre-order the audiobook and ebook, DRM free, as well as the hardcover, signed or unsigned. There's also bundles with Red Team Blues in ebook, audio or paperback.
Tumblr media
Long before the current wave of AI hype, we were being groomed for automation panics with misleading stories. Remember this one? "'Truck driver' is the most common job in America. Self-driving trucks are just around the corner. How can we prevent America's army of truckers from turning into a howling mob when the robots steal their jobs?"
https://futurism.com/millions-of-jobs-are-at-risk-but-their-loss-could-be-for-the-greater-good
It was absolute nonsense. First of all, "truck driver" isn't a particularly common job in America! The BLS lumps together all cargo vehicle drivers under a single classification. The category error here was thinking that every delivery van driver, furniture mover, and courier is behind the wheel of a big rig, cracking wise on a CB radio as they tear up the interstate.
But what about automation threats? It's possible that if we redesigned the interstates to give 16 wheelers their own separated lanes, and then set them to following one another, that they could traverse long distances in that way. Congratulations, you've just invented a shitty, failure-prone train.
"Shitty train AI" does not threaten the job of the vast number of people the BLS classifies as "truck drivers." For one thing, "shitty train AI" isn't going to pilot a UPS van around the streets of a busy city with other road users. Sure, a few robotaxi companies have bamboozled city governments into conscripting the city's residents into an uncontrolled murderbot experiment. These are not going well:
https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/9-key-leaders-depart-gms-cruise-amid-ongoing-investigation-into-san-francisco-incident/
More than $100b has been set on fire chasing the robotaxi dream, and the result is most charitably described as a technological curiosity, requiring 1.5 high-waged remote technicians to replace each low-waged driver:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/09/herbies-revenge/#100-billion-here-100-billion-there-pretty-soon-youre-talking-real-money
But even if we could perfect this technology, robots still wouldn't replace all those "truckers" who drive delivery vans (to say nothing of moving vans!). The hard part of driving a UPS van isn't just getting it from place to place – it's getting the parcel into the place. The robo-van would still need at least one person to get the parcel from the back of the van and into the reception desk, porch, or other delivery zone. It's not going to fire those parcels at your door with a catapult. It's also not going to deliver them by drones. Drone delivery is another one of those historical curiosities, capable of delivering a very narrow range of parcels, under even narrower circumstances:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/05/comprehensive-sex-ed/#droned
If all UPS delivered was lightweight, non-fragile rectangular parcels ordered by people with large, unobstructed back yards, then sure. Congrats, you've just created the world's least-useful parcel delivery service!
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/06/amazon-drone-delivery-service-seeks-faa-approval-to-launch-in-2022/
All that said, the big rig drivers probably don't need to worry about robots stealing their jobs. It's not even clear that "shitty train" is within our technological grasp, but even if it is, there's yet another problem with the AI automation trucker jobpocalypse: "trucker" is already one of the worst jobs in America:
https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/news/rigged-forced-into-debt-worked-past-exhaustion-left-with-nothing/
It's hard to overstate just how fucking terrible it is to be a trucker. Truckers are trapped in abusive debt holes by their employers – who misclassify their workforce as "contractors" in a bid to sidestep labor law. Shriven of any labor rights, truckers are forced into the most ghastly, body-destroying, family-wrcking, financially precarious existence imaginable.
You can drive a truck for years, give almost all of the money you earn back to your employer (who denies that you're their employee) to pay back the usurious loan for your truck. Then, your employer can underschedule for shifts so that you miss a loan payment, and they can repo your truck and keep the six-figure repayment you've already made to them, leaving you destitute.
They can force you to work for hours – days! – without pay while you wait for loading and dispatch. They can make you drive long past the point of safety, then, if (when) you get into a wreck, they can fine you for not taking the mandated rest breaks.
Now, these drivers aren't about to be replaced by AI – but that doesn't mean that AI won't affect their jobs. Commercial drivers are among the most heavily surveilled workers in the country. Amazon's drivers (whom Amazon misclassifies as subcontractors) have their eyeballs monitored by AI;
https://pluralistic.net/2022/04/17/revenge-of-the-chickenized-reverse-centaurs/
AIs monitor the voices of the (primarily Black, primarily female) workforce at Arise – homeworkers who field customer service calls for blue-chip companies like Carnival Cruises and Disney. They're listening for unruly children or pets in the background, and workers who fail to muffle these dependents lose the contracts they have to pay to train for:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/22/paperback-writer/#toothless
And AI monitors the conduct of workers on temp-work apps. If a worker is dispatched to a struck workplace and refuses to cross the picket-line, the AI boss fires you and blacklists you from future jobs for refusing to robo-scab:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/30/computer-says-scab/#instawork
Writing in The Guardian, Steven Greenhouse describes the AI-enabled workplace, where precarious, often misclassified workers are monitored, judged, and fined by algorithms:
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/jan/07/artificial-intelligence-surveillance-workers
Whether it's the robot that gets you disciplined for sending an email with the word "union" in it or the robot that takes money out of your paycheck if you take a bathroom break, AI has come for the workplace with a vengeance.
Here's a supreme irony: nearly all of the beneficial applications for AI require that AI be used to help workers, not replace them, which is absolutely not how AI is used in the workplace. An AI that helps radiologists by giving them a second opinion might help them find tumors on x-rays, but that's a tool that reduces the number of scans a radiologist processes in a shift, by making them go back and reconsider the scans they've already processed:
https://locusmag.com/2023/12/commentary-cory-doctorow-what-kind-of-bubble-is-ai/
But AI's sales pitch is not "Buy an AI tool and increase your costs while increasing your accuracy." The pitch for AI is "buy and AI and save money by firing workers." Given how bad AIs are at replacing humans, this is a bad deal all around, both for the worker who loses their job and the customer who gets the substandard product the AI makes.
There is a very limited slice of applications where an AI could make a lot of money for a company that deploys it, without costing that company anything when the AI screws up. For example, AI is a really good tool for fraud! Rather than paying people to churn out millions of variations on a phishing email, you can get an AI to do it. If the AI writes a bad phishing email, it's OK, since nearly all recipients of even good phishing emails delete them. What's more, no one will fine you or publish an op-ed demanding that your board of directors fire you if you buy an incompetent AI to commit fraud. Fraud is a high-value, low-consequence environment for using AI.
Another one of those applications is managing precarious workers who don't have labor rights. If the AI unfairly docks your worker's wages, or forces them to work until they injure themselves or others, or decides that their eyeball movements justify firing them, those workers have no recourse. That's the whole point of pretending that your employees are contractors: so you can violate labor law with impunity!
But that's not the ironic part. The ironic part is that "being a shitty boss" is the one AI application that companies are willing to increase their net spending on. No one buys an eyeball-monitoring AI so they can fire a manager. This is the one place where AI is there to augment, rather than replace, an employee.
This makes AI-based bossware subtly different from other forms of Taylorism, the "scientific management" fad of the early 20th century that saw management consultants choreographing the postures and movements of workers to satisfy the aesthetic fetishes of their employers:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/24/gwb-rumsfeld-monsters/#bossware
The pseudoscientific cod-ergonomics of the 1900s was demeaning and even dangerous, but it wasn't automated, and if it increased worker output, this was incidental to the real purpose of making workers move like the machine-cogs their bosses reassured themselves they were:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/21/great-taylors-ghost/#solidarity-or-bust
Every AI panic is a way of deflecting attention from the real, grimy, here-and-now ways that AI is destroying our lives by demanding that we entertain nonsensical science fiction claims about large, shiny existential risks that AI might present in the future.
The "X-risk" of the spicy autocomplete chatbot waking up and using its newfound sentience to turn us all into paperclips is nonsense. Adding words to the plausible sentence generator doesn't turn it into a superintelligence for the same reason that selectively breeding faster horses doesn't lead to locomotives:
https://locusmag.com/2020/07/cory-doctorow-full-employment/
But there is a way that AI could destroy the human race! The carbon footprint and water consumption associated with training and operating large-scale models are significant contributors to the climate emergency, which threatens the habitability of the only planet in the known universe capable of sustaining human life:
https://www.forbes.com/sites/federicoguerrini/2023/04/14/ais-unsustainable-water-use-how-tech-giants-contribute-to-global-water-shortages/
Likewise, AI isn't going to replace you at work. But it's already augmenting your shitty boss's ability to rip you off, torment you, maim you and even kill you in order to eke out a few more basis points for the next shareholder report.
Science fiction is a fun and useful way to tell parables about our current technologies. But it's not a roadmap for the future. The fact that sf writers like me found AIs as useful measures to describe Earth's dominant artificial life form – the limited liability corporation – doesn't mean that superhuman AIs should – or can – be created.

Brazil approves bill to boost electromobility
Tumblr media
Brazil’s lower house approved a bill that establishes a green mobility and innovation program called Mover.
The bill provides for financial incentives of 19.3 billion reais (US$3.67bn) over five years and a reduction in the IPI tax on industrialized products to encourage research and development of technological solutions and the production of vehicles and motorbikes with lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The proposal, which will now be analyzed in the senate, was well received by the market.
To gain access to Mover incentives, companies must have projects approved by the government and apply minimum percentages of gross revenue from automotive goods and services to research and development of solutions aligned with decarbonization and the implementation of assistive technologies in vehicles.

Subplots
AVENGERS + ADJACENT
— Battle of New York was the first domino to fall and also the first mission of the Avengers. Already they were crumbling from the moment they began after being rounded up by Nick Fury. Couple that with Tony Stark’s incessant need to find a way to protect the Earth from the terrors outside the solar system with Ultron, the Avengers are fraying at the seams. There’s a clear divide between them, those for Registration and those vehemently against. Steve Rogers stands in the middle, a man with a code and a mission to save as many people as he can. For now, it’s through being on the MAC, but it’s quickly becoming clear that Congress doesn’t want to see reason. The tensions between those that are in approval of registration and those against is starting to wear thin and it might see the split of Earth’s first major hero team.
Tony Stark
Steve Rogers
Clint Barton
Natasha Romanoff
Bruce Banner
Sam Wilson
James Rhodes
Wanda Maximoff (adoptable NPC)
Vision
Scott Lang
Hope van Dyne
X-MEN/BROTHERHOOD
— Charles Xavier, one of the leaders of the MAC, has made it clear that he isn’t going to fight against the Registration laws. As the founder and creator of the X-men and Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, he leads the charge in following the Registration. He has graciously offered all students and members of the X-men to be one of the first to join the list of powered humans. This of course sets off a chain reaction amongst the mutant kind. Those that are for Registration, stay with Charles and the X-men, assuming the best while those that are heavily against the idea of being monitored leave their home behind and join the Brotherhood on Genosha. Scott Summers has left the X-men behind, moving to Genosha to create his own team of fighters hellbent on protecting the lives of the innocent mutant children out there and working on keeping them from the Registration list. Then of course there is the Hellfire Club, the mysterious mutant exclusive group whose intentions are their best kept secret. Only Emma Frost has made her way outside the shroud of mystery in order to sit on the MAC, but really it’s just to keep her feelers out in the world for mutant gain. Tensions are high amongst mutant kind, battle lines are drawn, and the powder keg is about to be lit.
Movers & Shakers:
Charles Xavier (adoptable NPC)
Jean Grey
Scott Summers
Hank McCoy
Erik Lehnsherr (adoptable NPC)
Emma Frost (adoptable NPC)
Amara Acquilla
Warren Worthington III
Logan Howlett
Raven Darkhölme
Suggested Characters:
Bobby Drake
Ororo Munroe
Kitty Pryde
Simon Lasker
Lorna Dane
STARK INDUSTRIES/DODC
— The moment the Battle of New York happened, SHIELD ceased to exist. The Department of Damage Control rose in its place. These good men and women of the DODC work tirelessly to make the world safer for those humans who just want to live in peace and harmony. There will be no more shady missions in the background, no priority given to the powered heroes. Only cleaning up the mess that they created in the first place. Except Tony Stark wasn’t exactly all for it. While for Registration after the disaster of Ultron, he knew that having freedom to create outside of the government’s control is imperative. Which is why he and Stark Industries began to poach the former members of SHIELD. While Stark wasn’t a big fan of SHIELD in the first place, at least they did some good. He plans on doing the same. The only problem is the DODC doesn’t necessarily enjoy Stark Industries scalping their best people. SI might just be facing some legal battles with some physical force in the future especially with those former SHIELD agents who have gone to SI without finishing out their government contracts
Movers & Shakers:
Pepper Potts
Happy Hogan
Jemma Simmons
Leopold Fitz
Al Mackenzie
Daisy Johnson
Phil Coulson
Maria Hill
Melinda May
John Walker
Suggested Characters:
Monica Rambeau
Jennifer Walters
AIM/HYDRA
— Justin Hammer and Aldrich Killian. Two names that should be enshrined in the hall of the greats, but they’ve only become shadowed by Tony Stark. They plan on changing that. Hammer Industries and AIM have teamed up together to work on weapons that target those rogue metahumans who refuse to comply with the government’s wishes. It doesn’t hurt that both of them have grudges against the Avengers, Tony Stark in particular. Sure, their work might be controversial, but they have the government funding and the law enforcement that tend to look the other way when it comes to shady deals. Doesn’t hurt that HYDRA may or may not be slinking its tentacles into the mix too. Illegal experimentation has become rampant behind the scenes, but HYDRA doesn’t have to worry. They have more than a few politicians on their side to keep them from being discovered and what information they learn, they’re giving over to AIM for future weaponry. The illegal, cruel, circle of life if you will.
Movers & Shakers:
Aldrich Killian
Justin Hammer
Alexander Pierce
Ophelia Sarkissian (adoptable NPC)
Bucky Barnes (admin NPC)
Suggested Characters:
Brock Rumlow
Helmut Zemo
GOVERNMENT AND THE MEDIA
— Everyone knows that the media only show what they’re paid to show, what stories matter to the people with the deep pockets. Before the registration laws went into effect, there were rumors that the media was being bought, but it wasn’t until the laws happened that it was clear just who was paying the big bucks. Nowadays you can’t turn on a news channel without some TV spot about a rogue mutant or dangerous metahuman destroying property or endangering lives. The civilians of the world are only being fed what the politicians want them to see and that happens to be the downfall of metahumans. If only there were some media personalities out there that planned on fighting back against the blatant discrimination.
Movers & Shakers:
Christine Everhart (WNIN)
John Jonah Jameson (Daily Bugle)
Trish Walker (Trish Talk)
Valentina de Fontaine (CIA and HYDRA)
Everett Ross (CIA)
Mitchell Ellison (New York Bulletin)
Suggested Characters:
Ben Urich (New York Bulletin)
STREET
— Wilson Fisk considers himself the savior of Hells Kitchen. A rich benefactor in public, but a crime boss behind closed doors and no one dares speak up about it. For years he’s doled out offers of money and favors with the unspoken agreement that those favors will be called in one day. Now that Registration laws have gone into effect, he has generously offered a safe haven for those unregistered or fugitive metahumans on the run, using their abilities for his own gain. The only problem is now that he’s expanded his empire, it also means more eyes are on him and what others found fishy, they now find evidence of his meddling. Matt Murdock has been watching Fisk for years, buying his time, but now that Fisk’s seedy deals are starting to come to light, he’s starting to bring more of the other vigilantes to fight alongside the Daredevil. But you know what they say about deep pockets…
Movers & Shakers:
Matt Murdock
Jessica Jones
Luke Cage
Danny Rand
Frank Castle
Billy Russo
Maya Lopez
Wilson Fisk
Suggested Characters:
Foggy Nelson
Karen Page
Elektra
Vanessa Fisk (possibly still Vanessa Marianna, up to the player)
Claire Temple
Colleen Wing
Marc Spector
Layla El-Faouly
Yelena Belova
James Wesley
Nobu Yoshioka
Kazi Kazimierczak
Brett Mahoney (NYPD)
Blake Tower (SDNY DA)
Anatoly Ranskahov (Russian Mafia)
Samantha Reyes (SDNY DA)

Reclaiming the Legacy: Honoring the Aztec and Maya Civilizations Through a Progressive Lens
For far too long, the narratives surrounding the Aztec and Maya civilizations have been filtered through a Eurocentric lens, often painting these rich cultures in shades of savagery and mystique. But let's face it—it's high time we shift the paradigm and give these civilizations their due, acknowledging their innovations, social structures, and the wisdom they offer to our modern, often misguided, society.
Decolonizing History
The first step in giving the Aztec and Maya their flowers is to decolonize the historical narratives that have marginalized their achievements. It's like pulling off a colonial band-aid to reveal the vibrant tapestry beneath. These civilizations have been unfairly depicted as the "other," the "uncivilized," through a lens tainted by colonial biases. Recognizing the impact of colonization on historical records allows us to appreciate the Aztec and Maya on their own terms, celebrating their advancements without the shadow of European comparison. Let's level the playing field, shall we?
Advancements in Science and Mathematics
The Maya civilization, for instance, was not just ahead of the curve—they were drawing the curve. They developed a complex calendar system and could predict astronomical events with the precision of a Swiss watch. Their understanding of the concept of zero predated European mathematicians by centuries, showcasing an intellectual sophistication that was, frankly, out of this world. Imagine calculating celestial events without telescopes or computers—that's some next-level genius.
If time travel were possible, modern astrophysicists would be lining up to take notes from Maya astronomers, perhaps even feeling a tad insecure about their own calculations!
Sustainable Living and Environmental Harmony
Both the Aztec and Maya had their fingers on the pulse of Mother Nature, practicing sustainable agriculture that was green before being green was cool. The Aztec capital, Tenochtitlán, with its chinampas—floating gardens—was essentially the Silicon Valley of agriculture, innovating in ways that today's permaculture enthusiasts can only dream of. They managed to feed a booming population without wreaking havoc on the environment, something our modern societies are still struggling to achieve.
If the Aztecs were around today, they'd probably have the patent on sustainable farming, and we'd all be paying royalties just to grow tomatoes!
Complex Social Structures and Inclusivity
These civilizations were the epitome of "it takes a village," with social structures that, in some ways, outshone their European contemporaries. Women in Maya society weren't just in the background; they were movers and shakers, holding power in ways that would make modern feminists nod in approval. From governing roles to priesthoods, women's participation was integral to societal functioning.
Had the Maya been given a global platform, the concept of a glass ceiling might have been shattered centuries ago, and we could all be living in a gender-equal utopia by now.
Art, Culture, and Intellectualism
The rich tapestry of Aztec and Maya art isn't just eye candy; it's a cultural feast, reflecting a deep dive into aesthetics, storytelling, and cosmic philosophies. Their codices, murals, and sculptures are not mere relics but vibrant narratives that continue to inspire. Think of their art as the original multimedia experience, combining visuals, symbolism, and storytelling long before the digital age made it trendy.
If the Oscars had a category for "Best Ancient Civilization in Artistic Innovation," the Aztec and Maya would win hands down, year after year.
Resilience and Cultural Survival
Despite the colonial storm that tried to wipe them out, descendants of the Aztec and Maya are still here, keeping the flame alive. Their resilience is the ultimate underdog story, a testament to cultural endurance against all odds. Supporting indigenous rights isn't just fashionable; it's about righting historical wrongs and promoting equity.
Their cultural survival is like a real-life superhero saga—against all odds, they persist, making Wolverine's healing factor look like child's play.
Lessons for Contemporary Society
In looking back at the Aztec and Maya, we're not just navel-gazing; we're learning how to weave together science, art, spirituality, and community into a sustainable lifestyle quilt. Their holistic approach could teach us a thing or two about not just living but thriving. From community-oriented governance to eco-friendly practices, they offer a roadmap for a society that values harmony over hegemony.
If global leaders took a page from the Aztec and Maya playbooks, international summits might actually solve problems instead of just creating photo ops.
Conclusion
Honoring the Aztec and Maya is more than a nod to the past; it's about setting the record straight. By crowning these civilizations as the titans of human achievement they were, we're not just rewriting history books; we're crafting a future that's inclusive, respectful, and, dare I say, enlightened. Let's move beyond the relics and see these civilizations as the living lessons they are—continuing to inspire, educate, and yes, even entertain us.
It's time we recognize that the Aztec and Maya weren't just ancient peoples tucked away in history books; they were pioneers, innovators, and visionaries. By embracing their legacy, we not only honor their contributions but also enrich our own understanding of what's possible when societies prioritize knowledge, sustainability, and inclusivity.

HOW TO BRING PETS FROM OUTSIDE THE EU TO THE UNITED KINGDOM: A GUIDE FOR MOVING COMPANY CLIENTS
Moving to a new country will always represent an adventure and making it considerably difficult when there are pets. The process of bringing your furry friends to the United Kingdom, especially for those relocating from outside of the EU, can really be complicated. The following will take you through the steps you need to undertake and will specifically point out the crucial role a moving company can play in ensuring a smooth transition for your pets.
Understanding the Requirements
There are quite strict regulations for the considerations taken into account by the officials regarding animal safety and health when it comes into the UK from a non-EU country. According to the official issued guidelines by Her Majesty's Government UK, you need to fulfill the conditions well at least months before your pet can enter the country:
1. Microchip: The animal must be fitted with an ISO 11784/11785 compatible microchip. This is an identification requirement.
2. Vaccination: Vaccination of pets against rabies is a must. The vaccination must be implemented after the insertion of the microchip.
3. Blood Test: Blood sample to be taken not earlier than 30 days from taking the rabies vaccination, and the sample tested in an EU-approved laboratory for required rabies antibodies.
4. Documentation: You must be in possession of an official veterinary certificate, often referred to as an animal health certificate, from an official vet in your original country.
5. Tapeworm Treatment: Dogs must undergo tamper treatment against tapeworm, Echinococcus multilocularis, between 24 and 120 hours before coming to the UK.
6. Approved Route: An animal can only travel on an approved route with the use of a licensed transport company.
How To Find A Good Moving Company
A professional moving company can greatly reduce the stress of adhering to all these requirements. Moving companies with experience in moving with pets will be privy to the steps to take in regards to paperwork, scheduling, and coordinating with the veterinary services that are required.
Make sure to check, when choosing a moving company, that it's one of those that specializes in pet relocation services. This includes any such services as coordinating visits to the veterinarian, helping make travel arrangements, and ensuring that your pet is taken comfortably and safely. An excellent service provider in moving will also be kept informed of the governing rules in order to avoid last-minute issues.
Preparing to Move
Once you have decided on the professional moving company, the next step is to prepare your pet for the same. This includes:
- Scheduling Vet Appointments: You have to make sure your pets are up to date on their vaccinations and treatments. Your vet can also do the required blood test and documentation.
- Comfort and Safety: Purchase a comfortable and durable pet travel crate. Get your pet accustomed to the kennel before the day of travelling to avoid unnecessary stress.
- Travel Arrangements: Agreement by your mover to take care of your flight or journey using an approved route. Ensure the travel arrangements you make are compliant with the import regulations of the UK.
Upon Arrival in England
Further measures will be taken once you arrive in the UK to ensure the safe admission of your pet:
- Entry Points: The animal can only come into the United Kingdom through approved entry points that will have an animal reception center.
- Documentation Check: Ensures all documents, especially the veterinary certificate, proof of microchip, and vaccination record, are ready for inspections.
- Quarantine: There are instances in which, if not all the requirements have been met, pets are subjected to this procedure. Make sure that this possibility has been taken into consideration by your moving company and that all requirements are in place.
After Arrival
Once your pet has arrived safely in the UK, now is the time to set them in their new environment. A reputable removalist will be able to help you set up your new home to be pet friendly, which will make for an easier transition for your pet. You should also register with a local vet and update any identification details, such as microchip information to your new address.
Conclusion

Was Margaret of Anjou's murder of Humphrey proposed by the Tudor dynasty?
Margaret's involvement in Humphrey's downfall was first proposed in the sixteenth century according to B. M. Cron in her MA thesis, "Margaret of Anjou: tradition and revision". I'm yet to discover who was the "first" to claim she was involved in Humphrey's murder, however. Polydore Vergil, followed by Holinshed and Hall, claimed that Margaret was involved in a conspiracy to deprive Humphrey of power and influence but he doesn't explicitly connect her with the plot to murder him. I've included an excerpt from Vergil on Humphrey's death behind the cut.
Whether or not Margaret was actually involved is something we'll probably never know. Although most contemporaries believed Humphrey was murdered, most historians think he died of a stroke or heart attack brought on by the stress of his arrest. Margaret gave Humphrey a New Year's gift in 1447 which might suggest (as Cron suggests and Maurer perhaps hints at) that Margaret was uninvolved in the plot against him.
Henry VI certainly approved of the plan to arrest Humphrey on charges of treason, while William de la Pole, Duke of Suffolk has traditionally been seen as the architect and prime mover of the plot against Humphrey. Margaret, plausibly, could have been aware of the plot or even involved, especially given her close links to Henry and Suffolk. However, the claim he had opposed Henry's marriage to Margaret, thus earning Margaret's enmity, seems to have originated in Polydore Vergil's 16th century account rather than any contemporary sources.
I've taken this extract of Vergil from Dana F. Sutton's hypertext critical edition of the 1555 version of Anglica Historia.
But his wife Margaret was a very prudent woman, eager for glory, full of reason, counsel, officiousness, and manlike enterprises, in whom you could see much intelligence, much diligence, much vigilance, much carefulness. But she was not free of a womanly nature, being headstrong and fickle. When she came to realize that her husband Henry was ruling in accordance with Gloucester’s will rather than his own, and that he was devoting no great diligence or thought to the war, she decided to take that care upon herself, and gradually to deprive the duke of all the great power he enjoyed, so that she herself would not be called a goose for allowing her husband, now growing to maturity, to be governed by another man. Therefore a little later Margaret strove to put her plan into practice. But when the woman had once attempted this of her own volition, suddenly some men ready for sedition, prompt for violence, prone to crime and murder, rose up who sought to make Gloucester unpopular and egged her on [...] Fired by these urgings, the woman seized control of the kingdom, together with Henry her husband, and although this was nothing else but to plow a field by yoking together an ox and a donkey, as the saying goes, she nevertheless began spiritedly to undertake that responsibility. First she not only barred Gloucester from all public affairs, but also declined to shield him from his enemies’ insults. For not long thereafter some nobles conspired against the duke, accusing him of many misdemeanors, and particularly that he punished men convicted of crimes with greater severity than the laws of England prescribed. [...] Although the duke made a very creditable response to his accusers, he failed to help his case because he had already been marked down for death, save that he freed his mind from distress in that he was not obliged to listen to his condemnation and did not know the time appointed for his death. For the conspirators, fearing that there would be rioting if they subjected this popular man to a public execution, they decided to take him unawares. Therefore by authority of the Privy Council they summoned the nobility to appear on an appointed day at a parliament at the Abbey of Bury. When Gloucester made his appearance with the rest, he was suddenly arrested and on the following night, setting the worst example in human memory, he was strangled, with all his retinue thrown into prison at a single stroke.
Vergil's account is at odds at what we know - that is, we know that Humphrey's political influence had been waning for some time before his marriage to Margaret and that Henry had rarely, if ever, governed according to Humphrey's will (Humphrey wishes that was the case!). It is, however, close to how we see in Shakespeare depict Margaret and Humphrey's relationship in Henry VI, Part Two. Vergil's characterisation of Humphrey is in the "Good Duke Humphrey" vein and it's possibly for that reason he makes no mention of Eleanor Cobham's existence let alone the witchcraft accusations.
While Margaret's depiction isn't wholly negative, her flaws are associated with her feminity ("she was not free of a womanly nature, being headstrong and fickle") and her behaviour is linked to internal division and the death of the Good Duke, even if she is not actively involved.

Zurich Airport, CH (No. 3)
Terminal E contains gates prefixed E, and is also known as the midfield terminal or Dock E. It is a stand-alone satellite terminal located on the opposite side of runway 10/28 from the Airside Centre, and is situated between runways 16/34 and 14/32. It is entirely used by non-Schengen international flights and became operational on 1 September 2003. It is connected to the Airside Centre by the Skymetro, an automated underground people mover.
Zurich Airport has three runways: 16/34 of 3,700 m (12,100 ft) in length, 14/32 of 3,300 m (10,800 ft) in length, and 10/28 of 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in length. For most of the day and in most conditions, runway 14 is used for landings and runways 16 and 28 are used for takeoffs, although different patterns are used early morning and in the evenings. Zurich voters approved the extension of two runways at Zurich Airport on March 3, 2024. The extension of runway 28 by 400 metres (1,300 ft) to the west and runway 32 by 280 metres (920 ft) to the north is expected to increase safety and reduce noise pollution. The project is supported by the government of Zurich and the majority of political parties.

Which Financial Companies Do Not Require an NBFC License?
The Indian financial landscape is a bustling marketplace filled with a diverse cast of characters. Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) are some of the key players, offering a wide range of financial products and services that go beyond the realm of traditional banks. But when it comes to licensing, things can get a little confusing. Not every financial company needs the standard NBFC license issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). So, who gets a free pass? Let's unveil the mystery!
Tumblr media
The Regulatory Guardians: Different Watchtowers for Different Heroes
The RBI, like a wise old king, oversees the financial kingdom. But it doesn't micromanage everything. For some financial companies, specialized regulatory bodies exist:
Insurance Companies: These brave knights are regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA), ensuring fair play in the world of insurance products.
Housing Finance Companies (HFCs): These champions of homeownership are regulated by the National Housing Bank (NHB). Their primary focus is providing housing loans, and they get a special exemption from RBI registration.
Stock Broking Companies & Merchant Banking Companies: These market movers are under the watchful eye of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). They ensure the stock market remains a fair and transparent battlefield.
The Niche Players: Smaller Heroes with Specific Roles
The financial world isn't just about the big guns. Some specialized institutions operate under different rules:
Nidhi Companies: These are the friendly neighbourhood lenders, catering to a smaller, localized community. They operate under the Companies Act, 2013, with limitations on deposit amounts and business activities.
Chit Fund Companies: These are like financial rotating circles, governed by the Chit Funds Act, 1982. They follow a unique model where members contribute money periodically and receive lump sums in turn.
The Size Matters (Sometimes): Net Owned Funds and Exemptions
For most NBFCs, the RBI acts as the gatekeeper. If your Net Owned Funds (NOF), which is your company's own money minus borrowings, exceeds ₹ 25 crore (as of April 1999), then an NBFC license becomes mandatory. However, even within the NBFC realm, there are some exempted heroes:
Government Companies: These state-backed NBFCs don't need the RBI's stamp of approval.
Agricultural and Industrial Development Banks:  These specialized institutions established under specific Acts get a free pass from RBI registration.
Beyond the Exemptions: The Allure of the RBI CoR
Even if your financial company doesn't require an NBFC license, obtaining an RBI Certificate of Registration (CoR) can be a strategic move. It's like a hero's badge, signifying credibility and potentially unlocking access to larger funds.
Navigating the Financial Frontier
Understanding NBFC license exemptions empowers you to navigate the Indian financial sector with confidence.  Whether you're a budding entrepreneur or a seasoned investor, knowing the distinctions between these financial heroes fosters informed decisions and contributes to a healthy financial ecosystem for all. So, the next time you encounter a financial company, you'll be able to recognize which heroes wear capes (NBFC licenses) and which ones have other badges of honour!

Brazil Senate bill gives discounts to foreign purchases worth over USD 50
Tumblr media
A closer look at a bill passed by Brazil’s Senate this week shows that, although Congress scrapped import tax exemptions for international purchases of up to USD 50 — a harsh blow to East Asian e-commerce giants — it also granted a USD 20 discount for packages worth between USD 50 and USD 3,000. The information was first reported by the specialized media outlet Jota and confirmed by The Brazilian Report.
According to the approved text, which President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has promised not to veto, a product worth USD 100 — which today would pay USD 60 in import tax — would now pay just USD 40. Considering Wednesday’s exchange rate, the Brazilian consumer would save BRL 105.35 with the change. The reduction is even greater when considering that 17 percent of state ICMS tax is levied on the amount already deducted.
The proposal had been included within a larger bill that dealt with Mover, the federal government’s program to encourage the production and purchase of less polluting cars. Even though it has undergone changes and will have to be analyzed by the lower house once again, the part of the bill dealing with taxes on international purchases is unlikely to change, as leaders in both the House and Senate had already agreed on these provisions with the government.

Elogbook: NZTA Approved App for Uber Drivers & Fleet Manager
New RUC Era for EV and PHEV Owners in New Zealand
From April 1st, 2024, New Zealand marks a significant shift in its approach to sustainable transportation, as owners of light electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) begin paying Road User Charges (RUC). This move aims to integrate EVs and PHEVs into the broader scheme of road maintenance funding, ensuring all road users contribute to the National Land Transport Fund. With around 100,000 light EVs now on the roads, this policy change reflects the government's commitment to equitable infrastructure funding and environmental sustainability.
Picobyte Solutions Limited Steps Up with "myRUC"
To ease the transition for EV and PHEV owners, Picobyte Solutions Limited introduces "myRUC," an innovative app designed to streamline RUC management. Leveraging smart technology, "myRUC" ensures compliance, financial efficiency, and operational smoothness for individual owners and fleet managers. Here's how it revolutionizes RUC handling:
Advanced GPS Tracking and Automated Rebates: Utilizing cutting-edge GPS technology, "myRUC" ensures precise distance tracking, enabling automated rebate claims. This feature guards against overcharging and capitalizes on savings opportunities, turning necessary expenses into financial gains.
Flexible RUC Purchases: The app introduces unparalleled flexibility in RUC purchasing, allowing transactions as small as 1,000 km increments. This approach facilitates better cash flow management, ensuring that businesses pay only for what they need when they need it.
Time-Saving Automation: "myRUC" transforms administrative chores into efficient, automated processes. The app streamlines operations from license acquisition to compliance checks, freeing up valuable time for strategic business activities.
User-Friendly Compliance: With an intuitive interface, "myRUC" simplifies compliance, making it easier for drivers and fleet managers to adhere to regulations without the hassle of manual record-keeping.
Comprehensive Fleet Solutions: Beyond serving prime movers, "myRUC" caters to the entire fleet spectrum, including heavy trailers, with self-powering devices that require no external wiring, ensuring a seamless fit for any vehicle type.
Dedicated Support and Partnership: Picobyte Solutions Limited stands out for its commitment to customer success, offering bespoke support, training, and advice to confidently navigate the complexities of RUC management.
Understanding the RUC Charges
For EVs, the RUC is set at $76 per 1,000km, acknowledging their zero-emission advantage. PHEVs, which benefit from both electric propulsion and conventional fuel, are charged at a lower rate of $53 per 1,000km, reflecting their partial fuel tax contributions. Additionally, administrative fees apply, promoting efficient and fair road funding.
Navigating the Future with "myRUC"
As New Zealand progresses towards its carbon neutrality goal by 2050, the integration of EVs and PHEVs into the RUC system represents a critical step forward. "myRUC" by Picobyte Solutions Limited emerges as an essential tool for vehicle owners, blending innovation with practicality to support New Zealand's sustainable transportation future. For those interested in exploring these topics further, detailed information and insights can be found through the following sources:
For Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency's official announcement on EVs and the RUC, see their media release on electric vehicles subject to RUC from 1 April 2024.
Detailed information about RUC for electric vehicles is available on the NZTA's RUC for electric vehicles page.
Drive Electric offers insights on the EV RUC changes in New Zealand, which can be found on their EV RUC Changes in New Zealand page.
The Ministry of Transport's perspective on electric vehicle owners now being required to pay road user charges is outlined in their news release.
