We're starting to see the sound of the 2010's differentiating itself from the 2000's. EDM and dance pop is still big, especially that "festival sound". Nicki Minaj's Starships and Rihanna's We Found Love are notable examples of the "wordless chorus" (where the song builds up to a drop or some other kind of musical phrase instead of a traditional chorus) that will continue to shape the decade's musical landscape. We'll also start to see more examples of songs being attributed to the producer in addition to, or in some cases instead of, the vocalist.

But what's especially interesting this year are the new ways artists are being able to grow an audience. Traditional methods of promotion like TV are still present, with Fun's We Are Young gaining widespread popularity from its cover on Glee and One Direction gaining their initial popularity off of The X Factor. But this is the year we're starting to see the trends shifting. While Carly Rae Jepsen was already making a name for herself in the Canadian music scene through her appearance on Canadian Idol, her debut hit Call Me Maybe, started to take off in the States after Justin Bieber tweeted about it. This wasn't the first time a song blew up online, and it wasn't even the biggest this year.

I won't bury the lead: this was the year Psy's Gangnam Style took off worldwide. However, the song is not featured on this poll, because it only made it to number 47 on the Billboard Year-End chart. This is notable for any Korean language song (especially at the time), but for a song that was so universally known and parodied, if feels odd that it wasn't bigger than it was. The reason for that is Gangnam Style became popular through its music video, and Billboard didn't factor YouTube views into their charts at the time. Billboard changed their data collection to include YouTube views later this year. Was it because of Psy? Maybe. But after this year, we'll start to see a lot more instances of songs taking off in part to the performance of their music videos -- even more than the peak of MTV in the 80's.

Today I’m going to talk about the one-hit wonder.  Firstly, what is a one-hit wonder? It refers to an artist that gained significant popularity with a single hit song but cannot do it again. And so, their careers are associated with this single song. There is so many examples out here, let me give you a few: Patrick Hernandez-Born to Be Alive, Lipps Inc.-Funkytown, Baha Men-Who Let the Dogs Out? or Gotye-Somebody That I Use to Kown ft. Kimbra.

One-hit wonders are an interesting topic to talk about because they show several aspects of the music industry. This phenomenon is tied to the commercial aspect of the industry where the commercial success is prioritised. This angle of approach of the music industry, aiming at quick gains through the production of catchy and very marketable songs, show how artistic development matters less. There is also the fact that the industry often focuses on formulas that follow the current trend.

The one-hit wonders are also linked to the audience and how it consumes music. The environment in which the music evolves is related per se to capitalism, and that affects the way of consumption where you go from a song to the new one, and that is where the phenomenon of one-hit wonders can arise.

There is also the question of identity. Another aspect of one-hit wonders is that the identity and the song are deeply tied together and it becomes difficult for artists to go beyond that link. All that highlights the contrast between commodity and authenticity in the music industry. Another point about the identity in one-hit wonders, is the similarity. Each uses the same codes, and for the audience it is easy to consume because of the likeness but the redundancy inevitably leads to the loss of interest in the artist.

Overall, the phenomenon of one-hit wonder, is a reflection of the state of the music industry. It reflects on the questions of identities, of the audience’s perception and of the cultural trends. All that make artist pinned to one specific moment, which is the result of the industry’s focus on short-term rather than long-term.
