Bad Timing (Levi x Reader) Part 5
Summary: How do you tell your friends that you’re falling for your big brother’s best friend?
Work Count: 6.3K
You were angry. Of course Levi had to go and stir the pot right before the holiday season. The time of year when he spent the most of his hours at your home. Even though he spent most of his time at your house throughout the whole year, this amount of time typically doubled through the months of October through December. The remaining weeks in October were the worst. You both expertly avoided one another, Petra and Levi continued to see each other exclusively. This turned out to be bittersweet for you, the pros were that Levi was busy trying to please Petra to spend too much time at your house. But also it stung to see him with her, even though you had no right to feel jealous.
The two weeks after your kiss, you spent holed up in your room, your phone set on do not disturb. After binging Gossip Girls and all of the classic Disney movies, you finally decided that instead of focusing on romance, you would devote yourself to school. Thankfully you weren't the only person that favored school over social gatherings, you found yourself spending countless hours in the school's musty library with Armin. He was so easy to get along with, down to earth, kind, and most importantly, he was too shy to ask you about anything too personal. Today was one of those days, it was nearing the end of November, the trees had shed their leaves, bearing the naked bark. And the weather was constantly changing. Some days it would snow, others it would pour rain, but that was just the midwest for you. Glancing up from the textbook that had held your attention for the past two hours, your were pleased to see a flurry of fat snowflakes spiraling downwards. The window had frost creeping up from the corners, thank God, maybe the weather would finally settle and allow the snow to stick for once. You could feel Armin staring at you, his eyes piercing the back of your skull. a feeling you had become familiar with. Turning back to face him, he averted his eyes, a comforting pink creeping onto his cheeks with the embarrassment of being caught.
"It's really coming down huh?" you tried to initiate some light small talk.
"Yeah! Hopefully it will stick." Armin responded, a nervous chuckle slipping past his lips as he returned his attention back to his homework. You hummed, glancing back down at the yellowing pages of the old history textbook, a frown marring your features.
"What's wrong? Need some help?" Armin asked, standing up from his seat and coming to stand behind you.
"Oh, well I guess I'm just confused about this law." you pulled the response from your ass. Of course you understood Roe v. Wade, you just didn't want to tell Armin that you were ready to leave. He always made this face that reminded you of a puppy that just got drop kicked.
"Roe v. Wade huh? I can help you with that no problem!" his baby blue eyes lit up, he pulled the nearest chair up to the table, the legs loudly scratching against the rickety library floors.
"Great, thanks!" you tried to sound excited, and you tried even harder to focus on Armin's summary of Roe v. Wade.
"Easy right?" Armin chirped, his finger hovering over the paragraph that explained the law.
"You're right, I think that I just need a break. My brain feels fried." you moaned, folding your arms across the desk and burying your head in your arms.
"Likewise." Armin agreed, dragging his chair closer to yours not very subtly.
"Want to go grab a coffee?" you asked, barely lifting your head to glance at him.
"Sure." he beamed, his innocent face completely lighting up. Your library had a small coffee shop nestled in the back, the cafe was run by students who had free periods. Granted the coffee wasn't the best, but it still did the job. You thanked the girl behind the counter as she passed you your steaming cup of dark liquid. Armin was rocking back and forth on the balls of his feet as he waited for his order, you busied yourself with mixing in sugar and some creamer. Finally the barista gave Armin his latte and the two of you meandered back to your corner. You slowly began packing your things, hoping that Armin would get the hint and you would be able to escape the stuffy library. Armin noticed, you closed the book with a sigh and began stuffing pens and other writing utensils into your small pencil case.
"Ready to call it a day?" Armin asked his lips hovering over the steaming hot coffee.
"Yeah, I told Hange that I would be ready to leave by the time she finished with Science Olympiad." you sighed, gathering the assortment of books that you had pulled from the shelves getting up to return them to their rightful places.
"Oh gotcha, same time Thursday?" He asked hopefully, his light blue eyes meeting yours. You clicked your tongue and grimaced, shooting him an apologetic look.
"Ah I would but my mom has Thursday off so I was going to have dinner with her." you explained, watching Armin get that kicked puppy look, that look always had a way of making your heart hurt.
"Aw well have fun!" he waved you off, the sad look on his face replaced with a small forced smile.
"Thanks Armin, I'll see you in Chem tomorrow." you smiled sweetly at him as you turned to leave.
"Bye!" he waved goodbye to you as you pulled the large door open and slipped out. Sparing a glance at your watch you sighed, Hange should be done in the next 5 minutes. But knowing her she would take another 20 minutes to wrap up her Science Olympiad meeting. So you leisurely strolled down the empty stone corridor, your eyes trained on the large windows that lined the hallway and overlooked the courtyard. The library was on the second floor, which gave you a perfect view of the school grounds. The snow seemed to be falling faster now, the flakes were beginning to stick to the blades of grass, giving the lawn a patchy appearance. Hopefully Hange had remembered her snow scraper, surely the car would have a coating of frost on the windows by now. It would not be the first time that the two of you had to scrape ice from her windows using your credit cards or your school ids.
You turned your attention back to the stony corridor, you had almost reached the stairs. You began your descent, a hand loosely gliding down the cold stone banister. Your mind drifted to thoughts of what Erwin's plans were for this evening, did he plan to eat dinner with you? Or would he run off with Hange as he had been doing for the past week or so? You had noticed that the pair had been spending more time alone as of late, and you couldn't blame them. Erwin was already committed to Notre Dame, a prestigious school known for football and extraordinary academics. Hange had recently been accepted into Princeton, one of the eight ivy league schools, and she was ecstatic. This however means that they will attending schools in different states. You knew that they planned to continue dating despite the distance, personally you were a tad skeptical of long distance relationships, but you knew that they were both mature enough to continue seeing each other.
You paused on the landing between floors, the sound of laughter was echoing off the stoney walls.
"That was a dirty move Kirstein!" you recognized Eren's agitated voice, which was closely followed by the hearty laughter of Conny and Marco.
"Pay closer attention next time Jeager." Jean teased, a smile spread across your lips at the sound of your friends. Their presence motivated you to jog down the remaining stairs and turn the corner. Just at you poked your head around the corner your eyes landed on the group of boys walking towards you.
"Oi (Y/n)! Where's Armin?" Eren called out to you first and you waved.
"Still in the library." you jabbed your thumb back towards the stairs behind you.
"Classic." Conny sniggered as he adjusted his duffle bag on his shoulder. You pursed your lips as you took in their uniforms. They wore soccer jerseys and shorts, a matching set of forest green, the school crest, a pair of wings one blue and one white, rested above their left breast over their hearts.
"Indoor soccer?" you asked, nodding towards the ball tucked under Marco's arm. The boy nodded and tossed you the ball.
"Season just started." he stated proudly, you easily caught the ball and smiled at him. Marco was your age, but you didn't usually spend time with him outside of school. The two of you had grown close the year prior when you had been in the same gym class, but since then you hadn't spoken very much.
"How exciting." you murmured as you gripped the ball in your hands. The boys nodded and you tossed the ball back to Marco.
"What are you doing here so late?" Jean asked, cocking his head to the side.
"Studying for the Government test with Armin." you shrugged, tucking your hands in your pockets. Things had been tense in your friend group since you and Jean had began casually seeing one another. The two of you had gone out on a handful of dates over the past month, all of them enjoyable. But you knew you didn't want a full blown relationship, something you still needed to tell Jean.
"Ah gotcha. So will you be coming to Sasha's friendsgiving party this weekend?" Jean inquired, his eyes shined with a glint of hope.
"Oh, I almost forgot about that! Yeah I'll be there." you smiled, a rush of excitement running through you when you remembered the invitation you had received earlier this week.
"What are you bringing?" Conny butted in, licking his lips. You hummed thoughtfully, what would you bring?
"Maybe macaroni and cheese? Or a pie?" You thought aloud as you lifted a hand to cup your chin. Conny groaned and grabbed your shoulder.
"Pie, please for the love of God bring your pie." he begged, his hand squeezing your shoulder. You giggled at this eagerness, and nodded. Pies were easy enough to bake, and if that's what people wanted then you would be more than happy to deliver.
"Thank you thank you thank you-" Conny shook you as he thanked you profusely, Eren snarled and tugged the two of you apart, while Marco and Jean laughed.
"Knock it off baldy." he hissed as he tossed Conny back. You chuckled and waved your hands dismissively.
"I'd better go, Hange should be done soon." you sighed, your eyes straying to the nearest window, you gasped. The snow was coming down in thick swirls, the sun had dipped below the horizon, making it difficult to see much through the snow.
"Oh wow, that's a lot of snow!" Marco exclaimed as he turned to follow your gaze. Jean let out a low whistle, Conny squealed excitedly.
"Yeah I better get going." you called over your shoulder as you made a break for the west wing, which was where the senior parking lot was located. The halls were dark, you only crossed paths with one janitor who didn't even glance up at you. You paused at the door at the end of the hallway and squinted out into the blizzard. The parking lot was dark, a clear indicator that Hange had not arrived to warm up the car before you.
"Ah there you are, perfect timing!" Hange's booming voice startled you as it echoed through the empty hall.
"Oh Hange, thank God, please tell me you have your scraper." you fretted, Hange grimaced, giving you an apologetic smile.
"Yeah about that..." she muttered, her hand rubbing the back of her neck. You groaned and reached into your backpack for your wallet. You fished out your drivers license and your credit card and turned back to the snowy parking lot.
"Better get started then." you grumbled, Hange laughed anxiously and moved to open the door for the both of you.
"Right."
___
You flexed your raw fingers by the vents as they blasted hot air into the cabin of the car. Hange was rubbing her hands together furiously and blowing hot air on her own frigid fingers.
"For the love of God, just keep the scraper in the car year round." you moaned as you slid your id back into your wallet.
"Might be a good idea actually." Hange stuttered between the chattering of her teeth. You huffed, tucking your hands underneath your thighs in an attempt to regain the feeling in your hands. Hange shifted the gear to drive and slowly pulled the car out of the parking lot, the wipers squeaking against the glass as they swiped the relentless snow off of the windshield.
"So, what do you want for dinner kiddo?" she gushed, her coppery eyes glinting mischievously.
"I dunno, something hot." you jabbed back, shifting on your hands.
"Whole gangs going to be there!" Hange prodded, clearly attempting to get a reaction from you.
"Great, who's cooking?" you taunted, shooting her a smile to show that you meant well.
"Oh well I guess Nanaba could." Hange mused, pleased with your good natured jabs.
"Great I'm starving." you leaned back and closed your eyes. Hange chuckled and turned her eyes back to the dark road ahead.
The drive took longer than usual due to the heavy snowfall. The roads were slick with the fresh snow, which stuck stubbornly to the road due to the lack of traffic on the country roads. But you made it to your house without a hitch. Erwin's minivan was already covered in a layer of snow, and Levi's BMW was untouched, Mike and Nanaba had not yet arrived. Hange parked and the two of you quickly gathered your belongings and walked briskly to the front door. You kicked your feet on the mat before entering, the foyer already a bit wet due to snow being tracked in on shoes. You peeled off your shoes with Hange and carried your things upstairs, Hange following close behind. Hange slipped into Erwin's room while you dropped your bag in your own room. You hadn't seen your brother or his short friend yet which was odd, they usually hung out in the kitchen. You met Hange back in the hall, her glasses, which had fogged up when you had entered the house were perched atop of her auburn hair.
"Where are they?" you asked bluntly as you watched her scrub the spectacles with the hem of her sweater.
"Beats me, let's go make some soup or something." Hange shrugged, holding her glasses up to the light to inspect the lenses. So you jogged down the stairs and began pawing through the pantry through the abundance of canned goods. You frowned at the cream of mushroom soup and set it back into the pile before refocusing.
"Heyyy now we're talking!" Hange crooned, you turned to see her pulling out a frozen pizza from the depths of your freezer. You scoffed before turning back to the pantry, a frown settling on your features.
"How about tomato soup and grilled cheese?" you offered as you pulled out two cans of tomato soup and a loaf of bread. Hange shrugged and tossed the pizza back into the freezer, she then opened the fridge and pulled out an assortment of cheese. The two of you fell into your effortless rhythm Hange stirred the soup while you began to cook the sandwiches. Finally the front door banged open, Levi's combat boots squeaking as he walked into the house, he haphazardly kicked off the shoes and stalked into the kitchen and straight into the living room. You raised your eyebrows in surprise as you watched him walk through the house, his arms full with kindling. Erwin followed closely behind, his arms also full of firewood. So that's where the pair had been. Hange fawned over them, greeting Erwin by dusting off bits of bark from his coat before turning to pat Levi's head. Levi swatted her sticky hands off of his head and glared at her menacingly.
"Hands off four eyes." Levi hissed, he ducked expertly underneath her arm and fled to the kitchen where you were flipping a grilled cheese. Erwin and Hange began the chore of lighting the fire while you took on the task of cooking as per usual. Levi frowned at the sight of the damp foyer and turned on his heel to grab the mop. You smiled at the sight of him mopping the floor despite the fact that people were still on their way and it would only end up messy again. Sure enough, just as Levi tossed the dirty water out of the front door and tucked the mop back in the closet, Mike and Nanaba strutted in, arms full of assorted baked goods and board games.
"Hey everybody! Hope we didn't miss anything!" Nanaba trilled as she tracked more snow into the front room. Levi heaved a sigh as he turned to grab the mop, you chuckled and took the container of cookies from her arms so she could take off her jacket. Mike nodded at you as he strolled into the living room where Hange and Erwin were still fumbling to light the fire wood.
"No, we actually only just got home about thirty minutes ago." you assured the blonde as she joined you in the kitchen. She smiled as she watched Mike kneel down to join Erwin and Hange as they blew on the small embers.
"What games did you guys bring?" you attempted to make small talk as you turned back to the task at hand.
"Oh the usuals, Sequence, Candy Land, Clue, etcetera." she waved a hand dismissively as she turned to stir the soup.
"Sounds fun!" you exclaimed as you tossed another sandwich on the plate. Nanaba hummed in response as she smiled stupidly into the soup. You pursed your lips and cocked your head as you studied her.
"Not to be that person but...Have you picked a school yet?" you asked with a small chuckle. She nodded,
"Yeah actually, just picked two days ago!" she beamed, turning to face you once more.
"Wow really?"
"Yeah! I'm going to attend Michigan State University with Mike!" she gushed as she set the spoon off to the side with a clang.
"That's great! Michigan is beautiful, and that's an awesome school." you matched her excitement and dumped the final sandwich on the plate and switched the stove off.
"Thanks! We're super excited." her words were so sweet and filled with love it made you feel sick. You nodded and turned to grab plates and bowls for everyone. Nanaba and Mike had only started dating about a month prior, in fact they had admitted their affections to one another back in October at your house. In a way you envied their effortless relationship, despite only dating for a month they made a great pair. You served yourself and moved to sit at the island in the kitchen. A cheer from the living room told you that the trio had finally ignited the fire, shortly after they piled into the kitchen and began to dish food onto their plates. Levi once again stuffed the mop and bucket back into the closet and feverishly washed his hands before serving himself. As he reached for a grilled cheese the sleeve of his hoodie scrunched up, revealing a new tattoo on his left wrist. Your jaw dropped momentarily, the sight of the fresh ink shocking you. In fact it was so fresh that the skin around the ink was still red and a bit swollen, glistening with the salve. He rounded the island and dropped into the stool to your left, and your eyes went straight to his wrist.
"Fresh ink?" you asked, propping your chin on the heel of your hand as you watched him bring the spoon to his mouth.
"Yeah." he replied, not bothering to elaborate.
"Can I see?" you pressed, Levi shot you a glare as he bit into his sandwich but still lifted his hand for you to pull his sleeve up. You gingerly tugged his sleeve up and a tiny 'awe' escaped your lips. The drawing was extremely minimalistic, the delicate black ink contrasting beautifully with his pale skin tone. It was a small tea cup, with a chip in its rim. Levi scoffed and tugged his arm back.
"That's a good one Levi." you gushed as you turned back to your own meal.
"Thanks." he grumbled as he looked everywhere but your face.
"Where do you get them done?" you asked before taking a huge bite of your sandwich.
"WitchHammer." he grunted, his patience growing thin. All of these questions reminded him of a particular brunette. You hummed in response as you entertained the idea of getting a tattoo for your 16th birthday that was coming up in the next couple of months. You already had an appointment at the shop to get your forward helix pierced on your left ear. The others were getting rowdy on the other side of the island, too engrossed in their conversation to notice the side conversation Levi and you were engaging in.
"Did it hurt?" you quizzed feeling a bit playful. You had missed Levi's bluntness and his shitty sense of humor.
"I would be lying if I said no." he retorted, his sharp eyes catching yours for the first time in weeks. You chuckled and nodded as you chewed your food.
"You think that I would look good with a couple tattoos?" you giggled, smiling broadly at the raven haired boy. He clicked his tongue and turned to take you in, his eyes raking over your form. Finally his eyes settled on your hands, his brows pinched together in thought as he stared.
"Personally...I like minimalistic designs, you could probably pull off some finger tats or hand tats." he mused, you glanced at your hands, interesting. You held your hands up to the light to get a better look and began to think of some small designs that you might be interested in.
"Tattoos are a big commitment, don't just get some stupid shit." Levi lectured as he lifted his cup of tea to his lips, you frowned he was one to talk.
"I know." you decided that tonight wasn't the time to argue with him, especially since this was the first time spending time together in weeks. He nodded but kept a skeptical eye on you as you folded your hands onto your lap and turned to listen to the other conversation. You frowned when you realized they were just talking about prom, awkward. So you decided to clean up, the exhaustion of the long day seemed to hit you like a truck and all you could think about was your bed and all of the work that was due on Sunday. You washed up quickly and waved weakly before trudging up the stairs, thankfully the others didn't seem to care that you were calling it a night early. You changed into a pair of flannel pjs and an old ACDC shirt that had seen better days. You sank into your old desk chair and flicked on the small lamp, you rummaged through your back pack and pulled out your laptop and a notebook. Sparing a glance at the small alarm clock you groaned, it was already well past nine o'clock.
You decided to pick up from where you had left off with your Government notes. Your handwriting started off neat, the ink gliding flawlessly across the lined paper. But by the time you had finished the notes and moved on to your chemistry homework, your handwriting had become rocky at best. You frowned at the smudged ink, the green hue bleeding into the once white paper. With a sigh you reached for your white out and continued to write out the reaction. Once you were finished with Chem, you turned your attention to your research paper for English. As you typed you could feel your eyelids drooping, the words seemed to blur and bend across the computer screen. Closing your eyes for a moment wouldn't hurt would it? A defeated sigh breezed past your lips as you folded your arms across the desk and rested your forehead against your arms to block out the blinding light of your lamp. You yawned and rubbed your eyes in an attempt to wake yourself up, though this seemed to be unsuccessful. As you slipped into sleep, you recalled the last time you had fallen asleep at your desk and how fucked up your back felt the following week. But your exhaustion won and your head slumped against your desk, any pain you felt would be a problem for future you.
Meanwhile, downstairs the upperclassman were well into their third bottle of wine and their fifth round of Candy Land. Erwin flicked the spinner and moved his piece accordingly, Levi sat back and sipped the dry red wine, Mike had his hand thrown over Nanaba's shoulders casually. Hange was leaning her head heavily against Erwin's shoulder and Levi swore he had never felt like such a loser in his whole life. If you were down here at least he wouldn't be the only person down here that was single. Hange howled as Erwin pushed his piece past hers, always the sore looser. Nanaba giggled drunkenly as she choked on her glass of wine. Levi rolled his eyes, his friends were past tipsy now, but not quite drunk, and this was usually when Levi would leave. He hated dealing with drunk people, they were messy and loud, the mere thought of any of them vomiting made him cringe. He waited until the spinner came around to him before he excused himself.
"Count me out." he held up his hand to deny the spinner as Mike tried to hand it to him.
"Awe come on Levi! We can't let Erwin win for the fifth time in a row!" Mike begged as Levi stood up and picked up his glass of wine.
"No." Levi denied, his voice growing colder. The group collectively called for him to stay, their voices a bit unsteady due to the alcohol. Levi shrugged them off and carefully stepped over Hange, she snagged his ankle and held him in a vice grip.
"No, don't go Levi! Finish this game please!" she whimpered as she pressed her face into his calf. His nose wrinkled in disgust at the sudden contact, Erwin chuckled and pulled Hange back and pressed a kiss to her temple. Yeah it was definitely time for him to go to bed, besides he needed to put some vaseline on his fresh ink. He slid into the upstairs bathroom, the sound of his friends laughing fading into the background. Tugging up his sleeve his hissed at the feeling of the raw skin coming in contact with the cold air. He pawed through the drawers, pausing at the sight of your feminine hygiene products. He usually used the downstairs restroom since the guest room was in the basement. He slammed the drawer shut and moved onto the next one, a relieved sigh escaping his lips at the sight of the familiar jar of vaseline. He swiped the jelly onto his tiny tea cup tattoo and rolled his sleeve back down, the soothing jelly immediately calming the irritated skin.
On his way out of the bathroom he noticed the small sliver of light that shined through your cracked door. He glanced down at his wrist watch and frowned, it was one thirty in the morning, you had supposedly gone to bed hours ago. He glanced down the stairs, from the bathroom he could see the open floor layout of the living room, where all of his friends were still gathered. He steeled himself and padded up to your door, he lifted his hand and rapped the backs of his knuckles against the surface. He frowned when there was no response, he gently pushed the door open and tentatively stepped inside. The room was dimly lit, the only light emitting from the small lamp on your desk. His eyes softened at the sight of you slumped onto your desk, but quickly hardened at the sight of drool dripping from the corner of your mouth. He sat his wine glass down as quietly as he could on your nightstand and raked his eyes around your cluttered room in search for a blanket. He spotted a quilt neatly folded on your window seat, he unfolded the blanket and draped it over your shoulders. Just as the blanket was settling on your shoulders and he was pulling his hands back, the door flew open. He jumped, spinning around only to be met with the sight of an unsteady Hange. The brunette's eyes widened at the sight of Levi's hand on the back of your seat.
"What..." her eyes narrowed and she pointed between the two of you.
"Is this?" she finished as she stepped into the room, her body swaying unsteadily. Good question, what was he doing in here?
"I came to shut off her light." Levi lied through his teeth, the truth was that he had wanted to spend more time in your presence.
"Lies." Hange hissed as she pointed accusingly at him.
"Tch, believe what you want four eyes." Levi grunted as he stalked across the room, meaning to make a quick get away before she drew too much attention to this fishy situation.
"Hey don't-" she lunged in an attempt to keep Levi from escaping, spilling her glass of wine onto the white carpet and onto Levi's crisp white hoodie. She caught herself on Levi, a drunk giggle bubbling past her lips as she clung to him. Levi staggered under her weight, his back hitting your wall with a dull thud. You grunted, slowly lifting your head from the desk you turned around to see Levi seething under Hange's weight as she pressed against him. Your eyes widened at the sight, Levi was trying to grab the glass from her hand to prevent further spillage, you were so distracted by the rare sight of Levi and Hange in such close proximity that you didn't notice the quilt falling off your shoulders. You blinked dumbly at the two of them as they grappled for the wine glass, Levi ultimately winning due to Hange's drunken state.
"Levi was peeping on you while you slept." Hange blurted, Levi slammed his hand over her mouth and snarled. You weren't surprised when Levis pulled his hand back with a small gasp, you could just make out the sheen of what you assumed was Hange's drool over his palm. The brunette cackled and staggered away from him and out of the room.
"I'm going to tell Erwin." she sang as she stumbled through the hall with her hand on the wall to guide her.
"Hange don't, it's okay really." you called after her, but your words fell on deaf ears as she rounded the stairs and disappeared.
"Damn it." Levi hissed, his eyes trained on the stain on the ground, he pulled the sweat shirt off of his skin, the alcohol sticking to his skin. You cleared your throat awkwardly as Levi pulled the sweatshirt off. You glanced at the stairs, no sign of Hange and Erwin yet, you could hear the sound of the group stumbling around the kitchen. Hopefully Hange had forgotten and favored grabbing another drink over causing trouble, so you stood up and crossed your room to quietly shut the door. Levi had his head against the wall, his eyes closed expecting an onslaught of accusations. Instead he was surprised to see you digging through your closet, pulling out one of your larger sweatshirts you tossed it to him. He caught the garment and eyed is suspiciously before tugging it over his head.
"Thanks." he mumbled, you waved him off and crossed your room to sit down on your bed.
"What's up?" you questioned, it was certainly out of character for him to be in your room. Levi shrugged and slowly crossed the room to drop down onto your bed next to you.
"Your light was on and I came in to shut it off." Levi replied nonchalantly, his eyes dull as he watched you slip under your covers. A chill ran up your spine, your room always got cold in the winter due to the large windows. After a moment of awkward silence you patted the space beside you, Levi quirked a brow at you but when you smiled at him he slid closer to you. He settled against the headboard with a sigh, you looked up at him, taking in the sharp lines of his jaw and the way his Adam's apple bobbed when he swallowed. He turned and raised a brow skeptically at you, you giggled and turned to slip deeper under your covers. He scoffed but turned to face you, propping himself up on his elbow. From this close proximity you could smell the wine on his breath, you noticed that his pupils were dilated, and his cheeks flushed.
"Thanks...I guess." you muttered as you watched him reach into his pockets and pull out his juul and take a hit. You frowned as he turned his head away from you to exhale, he sighed contentedly and turned to face you once more.
"You're going to get me in trouble." you scoffed as he attempted to offer you the juul.
"You only live once." he smirked as he dangled the device in your face. You gently pushed his hand away from your face, he shrugged and took another drag.
"Are you sleeping over?" you questioned, he simply nodded and pocketed his juul.
"It's like three in the morning." he scoffed rolling his eyes in annoyance.
"Oh, I guess..." you trailed off, the house had grown quiet, hopefully Hange had been dragged to bed by Erwin and had long forgotten about snitching on Levi. You weren't sure what Levi was still doing in your bed, you knew that he wouldn't force himself on you, but still he had never spend this much time alone with you since the time you had kissed. Just as you were about to ask him why he was still in your room, you heard the sound of the front door opening and then quickly closing. Your mother was home, you shoved Levi's shoulder and motioned for him to get out of your bed, a surge of panic rushing through you. Your mom would kill you if she saw Levi in your bed this late. Levi grunted and rolled off the bed, landing heavily on the ground with a thud. You winced and pointed at the door, Levi opened his mouth to say something but ultimately turned and stalked towards the door. When he opened the door, he was met with the tired face of your mother. Her eyes widened at the unexpected sight of Levi.
"Oh, Levi.." she managed to keep her voice even as she took in his appearance, his hair a bit mussed, cheeks pink and wearing your clothes.
"It's not what it looks like mom!" you scrambled out of bed and pushed Levi away from the doorway so that you could address your mother.
"Really..." she narrowed her eyes skeptically as her eyes roamed over your pajamas and messy hair. You grimaced but nodded, she glared at you and heaved a heavy sigh, turning her attention to Levi.
"So your uncle told me that you wouldn't be coming to Christmas this year?" she swiftly changed the subject. Levi blinked, shocked that she had chosen to ignore the suspicious state she had found the two of you in.
"Y-Yeah that's true, I finally saved enough to visit my old friends in France for the holidays." he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Is that so?" she hummed, leaning against the door frame and tugging her light jacket closer to her body. Levi nodded and spared you a glance, you looked surprised, but not upset.
"Well that sounds amazing, you'll have to send us a postcard." she mused, Levi nodded and shifted awkwardly.
"Yes ma'm." he responded, your mother nodded pleased with his response.
"How long will you be gone for?" she probed.
"Until January 8th." Levi answered.
"That's a long time." you quipped, Levi glanced at you and nodded.
"How exciting." your mother's response was genuine, she stepped aside allowing him to pass.
"Yeah." he muttered as he slid past and made his way towards the stairs. Once he was out of sight your mother turned to you, her usually soft features pinching into a scowl.
"Explain." she snapped, pointing a finger at the sizable wine stain.
"Hange spilled it, I'll clean it in the morning." you sighed as you eyed the large purple spot.
"Alright, just make sure that it gets cleaned." your mother leaned forward and kissed your forehead. You smiled at her, it was unusual that you got to see her after her shift.
"How was work?" you asked as you eyed her scrubs, noting a mystery stain on her shirt.
"Messy." she sighed as she followed your gaze.
"Did you save lots of lives?" you giggled.
"Of course." your mother jabbed.
"Get some sleep (Y/n)." she hummed, her hand burying into your messy hair to ruffle it affectionately.
"Goodnight mom." you called after her as she descended the staircase, she waved her hand and you slowly shut the door.

“Don’t Speak Their Names” - Shrimpshipping fic Chapter 17
This chapter on AO3 can be found here.
Chapter 17 - Proud Daughter
“Wow, Rex, you look like you went on quite the shopping trip!” Ptera observed as her son got in the back seat of the car with Weevil.
“I bought all my school supplies.” Rex sheepishly revealed his debit card. “I hope you don’t mind.”
“Quite the contrary.” Ptera ruffled Rex’s hair. “You’re coming to class prepared. I’m so proud of you, mi hijo. ”
“Hehe… Thanks.”
Ptera noticed the bag with the fetal doppler. “Oh? What’s that?
“I saw a doctor on campus today.” Rex was careful not to mention a word about Spinos. “And no, it didn’t cost me a dime. Bet you didn’t know that healthcare is free for all students, whether it’s at the hospital or at the university.”
Amber noticed that the back seat was fairly full, and elected to take the front seat. “Um… Hello, ma’am.”
“Who’s this, Rex? A new friend of yours?” Ptera asked as the car took off.
“Yeah. Her name’s Amber… Say, Amber, I just realized something. You never told us your surname or your middle name.”
“That’s because I don’t have either one. Believe it or not, there are people in the world who don’t.”
“Is that so? Well, I learn something new every day.”
“That’s not hard for you, dino brain.” Weevil laughed.
“Speaking of which, Mom… The reason I went to the doctor was to get an ultrasound of my baby. You’re going to have a happy, healthy granddaughter!”
“You should name her after me, haha! I hope she gets my wild purple hair and personality.” Ptera invited Amber into the house. “Adelaide and your mama just came home from a long shift at work, so don’t wake them up until it’s time for dinner.”
“Ma’am, can I help?” Amber offered as she retrieved a satchel from her handbag. “I mean, I’ll admit I’m not the best cook around, but… I know how to cook bee larvae.”
“Say whaaat? In that case, knock yourself out!” Weevil happily consented.
“Y-Yes, well… Go right ahead.” This notion creeped Ptera out a little bit.
“Now I can just get right into studying, without worrying about looking for my favourite food.” Weevil laid down on the sofa with a cushion under his head. As usual, Rex turned it to one of his favourite channels, the Discovery Channel. Weevil paid the T.V. no heed as he began to study, propping his legs on a loveseat. “Which, by the way, I haven’t been able to find in a while. Where ever did you find it, Amber?”
“Oh, just… Just looking around.” Amber whistled as she and Ptera cooked. While she left the skillet on, she began to prepare salad, as that was the only other thing she knew how to make. “My father actually owns a well-off apiary and is an avid lover of insects. He’s the reason why I’m an insect duelist. I also have some of our honey with me, if you want some.”
“So you are rich!” Rex grumbled. Having little desire to study, he pulled out his laptop and switched the T.V. to the news. “That explains why you’re such a smartass.”
“I’d love to meet this fellow insect duelist,” Weevil mused. “And what better way to introduce ourselves than through Duel Monsters?”
“Haha…” Amber gave a halfhearted chuckle. Dinner was ready, and she offered Weevil a small bowl of fried bee larvae. “I’m sure of that…”
A reporter from the T.V. put this conversation on hold. “We just received breaking news that monsters have been spotted in various parts of Domino City and around the world. Sightings have not been prevalent, but said monsters have caused wreckage in several small towns and isolated areas. We will keep you posted on these latest monster attacks.”
“Oh great, this again?” Rex facepalmed as he recalled the mess that the Orichalcos caused. “As if one or two monster attacks weren’t enough…”
“What do you mean, ‘again?’” Ptera raised an eyebrow.
“Uh… Forget you heard that.” Rex had never told his parents about said Orichalcos mess or the fairly recent Red-Eyes Black Dragon attack. Or about his shapeshifting abilities, for that matter. And forget about the time travelling and KC Grand Tournament! Rex wasn’t thankful that, unlike Weevil, he had no ability to bullshit. “Just… uh… Whoa! What was that?”
Rex could hear a loud sound; though it was in the distance, its source was strong enough to shake the ground and wake up Adelaide and Tricera.
“Oh my gods, could it be an earthquake?” Tricera worried.
“No, an earthquake would be more consistent than that,” Adelaide answered. “But hust in case, I’ll call the police and report it.”
“Then… Then maybe the monsters from the news are real!” Ptera turned the burner off and approached her son. “Rex. You know something that the rest of us don’t, don’t you?”
“Mom…” I suppose there’s no hiding it now. “You’re not going to believe this, but I-” A knocking from the front door prevented Rex from speaking further. “I’ll get that.”
“Who could be knocking at our door at a time like this?” Ptera wondered. “I hope none of you ordered pizza or something.”
“Maybe it’s the press,” Adelaide suggested. “They could be here to ask us about monster sightings.”
“...Wait.” Tricera squinted at the person who knocked on the door. “That’s-”
“Dad!” Rex was stunned to see Spinos at the door. “What are you doing here?”
“You…” Tricera marched to the door. “You fucking bastard! How dare you show your ugly ass face at MY house!”
“W-Wait!” Spinos couldn’t stop the tall, strong Tricera from seizing him by the collar and punching his face.
“How the hell did you even find us?” Ptera asked. “You’ve been stalking us, haven’t you?”
“P-Ptera…”
“ ¡Vete al diabolo, puta madre! ” Ptera clocked Spinos really hard on the other cheek.
“Please, Ptera, there is no time!” Spinos disregarded the stings from the punches on both sides of his cheeks. “There are monsters coming this way!”
“And you expect me to believe you?” Ptera thundered. “If I couldn’t trust you 20 years ago, how do you expect me to trust you now?”
“Mrs. Raptor, he’s not lying!” Amber pointed to the sky from which several flying monsters came. “Look!”
“Oh, gods…” Ptera watched as the monsters shot lasers that destroyed nearby homes. “They’re going to destroy my house that I’ve worked so hard to save up for!”
The monsters… Weevil trembled as he heard the horrified screams of the unfortunate people who lost their homes - and would soon lose their lives, if he didn’t do something about it.
“Weeves?” Rex knelt down to Weevil’s eye level. “What’s wrong?”
“Nobody can save these people… except me…” The ground underneath Weevil began to quake. His heart raced uncontrollably fast, and a red-and-purple aura emanated from it.
“Weeves, snap out of it!” Rex seized Weevil’s shoulders as the bug duelist fell deeper into his trance.
“Leave me alone!” Weevil shoved Rex off of him. He hadn’t fully shifted since last year’s Halloween Tournament, but was fully prepared to do it to save his boyfriend’s home. “You guys need to stay behind!”
“Weevil, don’t do it!” Ptera cried. “You can’t face them all by yourself!”
“...Actually, Mom, he can.” Rex watched as once again, Weevil transformed into Earthbound God Uru. Only this time, rather than causing harmless mischief, Weevil had every intent to kill any monster who would dare oppose him. Just the presence of his spider form, looming over his enemies larger than even KaibaCorp Tower, intimidated foe and friend alike.
“M-Master Weevil!” Adelaide couldn’t believe it. “What is happening to you?”
“Leave my home alone, you bastards!” Weevil shot a string of spider webs at the enemies who attacked him.
“Gaaah!” Two of the enemies fell to their deaths.
“He’s… something else, isn’t he?” Spinos observed.
“You know it…” Rex could only sit there and watch his boyfriend wreck havoc on his enemies, and hope that Weevil wouldn’t completely lose his mind out there.
“Wait, where’s Amber?” Tricera asked after a brief look in the house. “She’s gone!”
“I didn’t see her in the backyard, either!” spoke Ptera.
“Oh… Oh, no…” Rex’s good mood faded. “Did she get captured?”
The apparent leader of these enemies, Cyber Dragon Infinity, answered, “No, but I’m about to capture your precious little boyfriend! Who, by the way, isn’t looking so good over there.”
“It’s… happening again…” Weevil stared at the blood on his spider legs, and the blood he shed throughout the concrete. “I… have killed someone… again…”
“Well, why don’t we put you out of your misery, eh?” Cyber Dragon Infinity ordered his underling, an Armored Bee, “Activate your special ability!”
“With pleasure!” The Armored Bee rushed at Weevil full-speed, shouting, “Poison Stinger!”
“Ah… I feel… weak…” Weevil passed out and shifted to human form.
“Hah!” Cyber Dragon Infinity looked down upon Rex and his family. “Some ‘almighty, powerful Earthbound God,’ huh?”
Rex stepped forward, and already he half-shifted. “I’ll show you yet…”
“What is the meaning of this?” Cyber Dragon Infinity cackled as Rex transformed. “Do you, the puny Creepy Coney, honestly think that you can take down a monster as strong as I? By yourself? Hah! Your brain must be smaller than that of an actual rabbit!”
“Shut up!” Rex charged, only to be blown back rather easily by the Armored Bee and forced to revert forms. “O-Ow!!” he cried in pain while rubbing his belly.
“Rex!” Ptera knelt to her son’s side and cried. “You fucking idiot! Why did you do that?”
“Now that Uru is out of my way, there’s nothing standing in between your ruddy home and I! Die, the lot of you!”
Cyber Dragon Infinity couldn’t even begin to charge his attack, when out of nowhere, a shapeshifter with white-and-pink wings flew onto the scene. “You will do no such thing!” she declared as she shot an arrow at the Armored Bee, killing it instantly.
Rex already knew who this shapeshifter was. “Amber! There you are!”
“Leave my family alone!” Amber continued to shoot arrows at Cyber Dragon Infinity.
“You… You are…” Cyber Dragon Infinity was truly scared, yet tried to fend off Amber with attacks of his own - but not without sustaining severe injuries himself. “Pah! I don’t give two figs who you are! You’re severely outnumbered! Here, why don’t I give you a fresh reminder of that?” The dragon shot a quick beam of light, nicking Amber’s wings.
“Yeooooow!” Amber retracted her wings as she fell back to the ground. Though she was too weak to even half-shift, that didn’t stop her from pursuing Cyber Dragon Infinity. “Give Weevil back this instant!”
“Hmm… How about no? I’m not going to waste the little energy I have left on a monster that is clearly stronger than me. You get to keep your heads and your home for today! Be thankful!”
And with that, Cyber Dragon Infinity flew off with Weevil in tow.
“Tch!” Amber turned her attention to Rex. “Why, oh gods, why, Rex? Why did you attack an enemy that is clearly stronger than you?”
“That’s just the Raptor way, haha…” Rex had strength to stand up by himself. “...Wait. Amber? Is that you?”
Amber now had long mint-green hair with lavender sideburns and bowl-cut bangs. Her pupils were small and indigo. Rex didn’t think it was possible, but she looked even more beautiful than ever before. “It, um… seems my wig and contacts came off during that fight.”
“Amber…” Rex walked up to Amber to get a better look at her face. “Who are you, really?”
“I have lied to you all this time, Rex… Forgive me.” Amber calmed down a little before she began to explain herself. “So you know how you time travelled to the past with the pharaoh? I have done the same thing… I come from the future - a ruined future. I’m here to prevent that future from happening.”
“Uh-huh.” After all he had been through with Atem and Kaiba, Rex believed every word Amber said. Still, he found it curious that people could travel from the future. He thought that Amber would have had it all over there - the best technology, the toughest opponents, and the strongest cards. If she wanted to escape that, then something truly messed up must have happened.
“Everyone I know from that future is dead My kid brother… My boyfriend… Even my mother!” Amber teared up. “Everyone I knew! They… They all died trying to protect me!”
“Amber…” Rex rubbed Amber’s back. “I’m sorry. I can’t say I know what you’re going through, but… I really am sorry.”
“But now… I can see you again… You’re alive, Papa!”
Rex’s eyes opened wide. “What did you just call me?”
“I’m not just Amber… I’m Ambrosia Camellia Ptera Raptor, the proud daughter of Weevil and Rex Raptor.” Amber lightly touched Rex’s baby bump. “I’m your daughter from the future!”
“So… that explains why you know about Mom, and about shapeshifters…” Rex began to cry too. “Forgive me, my daughter… You deserved better from me than one bow and a world of troubles… I’m sorry.”
Amber could finally release her emotions that she kept bottled up since her mother’s death. “Papa! Oh my gods, Papa…” she cried loudly into Rex’s chest. “I… I never thought that I could hug you again… You’re alive and breathing! I can’t… I can’t believe it!”
“Shh… I’m here, Amber…” Rex ran his fingers through his future daughter’s hair and wiped away some of her tears.
“You’re… breathing…” Amber held her ear to Rex’s chest to hear his heart beating. “And… you’re alive… This is… Oh, my gods… I’m sorry, I’m just so happy right now.”
“There, there…” Rex smiled while he cried. “We’re going to save your father, too. Or… Hold on a second.”
“Yes?” Amber stopped crying and looked at Rex curiously.
“ Weevil is the father, right?”
“Uh-huh. That would make you my mother.”
“I knew it…” Rex shook his head. “I wonder if I’m going to bottom for him again. Not that I would mind that…”
“Come on, Papa, there’s no need to be embarrassed about it!” Amber laughed and poked Rex’s cheek.
Still feeling confused about everything that had happened, Ptera spoke up. “So… that makes you my granddaughter, doesn’t it? You’re the little baby Rex is carrying.”
“That’s right.”
“First this time travelling, then this whole shapeshifter thing…” Spinos spoke. “I have made many discoveries as a paleontologist, but this one really takes the cake.”
“Why are you still here, scumbag?” Ptera growled.
“Please, Grandma…” Amber begged. “I know what Grandpa did was unforgivable, but in my future, he died protecting both you and me. I ask that you give him a chance.”
“I ask the same,” Rex concurred. “It was Dad who told me about the doctor, and if it wasn’t for him, I would have no idea how to care for my daughter… for baby Amber.”
“Hmph!” Ptera still wasn’t wholly comfortable with this idea. “Fine. Since we’re both interested in Rex’s safety, I’ll cooperate with you. But do not expect to ever become friends with me. EVER.”
“Thank you so much, Ptera… No matter how long it takes, I’ll do what I can to earn your trust once again.”
“So what do we do now?” Tricera questioned. “Weevil has been kidnapped, and there are monsters roaming the city… We’ve got quite a matter on our hands.”
“I know of a club who can help stop this mess,” replied Amber. “But I ask anyone who’s not a shifter to stay behind, for your own safety.”
“No!” Adelaide refused. “After all Master Weevil has done for me, I can’t just leave him alone, suffering in gods know where… I’m coming, too!”
“Weevil is part of my family, too,” Ptera declared. “We’re all in this together.”
“And I’m sure this is a really good reason to call off of work,” Tricera added. “It’s times like these that remind me why I’m thankful to be a reputable employee.”
“Nana…”
“It feels a bit weird being called that, I gotta say.”
“Well, what I gotta say is how damned proud I am that you’re named after me!” Ptera laughed. “I mean, I wish you took my given name, but I guess I’ll settle for middle name.”
“Hahaha!” Amber already began to walk in the direction of the university. “Well, what are we waiting for? I wanna go save Daddy!”
“Wait, Amber, before we go…”
“Yes, Papa?”
Rex pulled out his flip phone. “Let’s meet at the café first. If things are as serious as you say, then we need all the help we can get.”

A Sky Full of Stars || Rio & Frankie
Timing: Before all the finale nonsense Parties: @3starsquinn & @offrankies Summary: After watching a tired Orion study for hours, Frankie decides to give him some company and some free fries.
Working at Al’s had proven to be easier than she’d expected. Sure, she still had trouble carrying trays that were filled with drinks since they weighed more than she was able to carry normally, and, sure, she still sometimes got an order mixed up and brought a salad to someone who asked for a monster burger; which meant that Frankie had to be on night shifts most of the time since there were less customers at 2am than 2pm. The night population of White Crest had turned out to be more interesting than she had expected. People with the strangest auras had walked in, and more than once she had been sure they had dropped bugs in her hair to annoy her. But, in all honesty, she didn’t mind one bit since everything was potential knowledge for her supernatural guide.
That one particular night had been exceptionally slow. There was a small group of drunken, middle aged friends that had very loudly told her they had reunited for their twenty years anniversary of finishing college who kept asking for beer after beer and the occasional plate of chicken wings. And then, on the opposite side and in a completely opposite mood, a young guy that looked around her age. He’d been there for over an hour, his food basically untouched. With a smile, she went behind the counter to grab an empty glass, filling it with lemonade, before walking towards him, setting the lemonade in front of him, but being careful of his books. “Sooo, your fries are probably cold by now. Want me to bring you more? On the house, of course.”
The Scribe Headquarters was starting to become less feasible for a night’s stay. Not that he had discounted it completely, but with roommates like Winston and Ricky, who actually made him feel welcome in their home, he didn’t really need to resort to old mattresses inside of an abandoned building tucked away magically in the woods. More and more he found himself less thrilled at the idea of staying there overnight during a big research night. Tonight, he took a detour for food before he headed back to his house. He had grabbed whatever he could from the Scribe headquarters, any journals from Scribes that talked about demons. He needed to find something soon before the cursed eye found a permanent home on Rio’s palm. He kept a wrap around the scar on his hand where that terrifying eye may open back up at any time. For now, Darwin had it. But Rio had no idea how long that may last.
Usually, Rio would have devoured the food from Al’s. When the waitress had brought him the food, he had taken a few bites from the fries before finding an especially intriguing entry from a former Scribe who had travelled all over Maine performing exorcisms. It didn’t end up turning into anything useful, but it was still an interesting read. He wasn’t sure how long he sat at the booth, his legs tucked up under his legs and books and stray pieces of paper scattered across the table. The only empty space was occupied by the plate of forgotten food. By the time the waitress came back around again, speaking and breaking him free from his focus. He jerked his head up, somehow missing that the girl had even come up next to him. He pulled the headphones from his ear, not so much using them for music as he did to try to drown out the noises coming from the other end of the restaurant. “Oh thank you so much! I’d love that.” He took a long drink from his lemonade, downing half the glass in one go. He had been surviving mostly on Monster’s and candy at the Scribe headquarters and could feel himself crashing. He either needed more sugar to get the rush going again or the waitress would come back soon to find him passed out on the table. “Do you serve energy drinks here?” Rio questioned, before snapping his fingers and changing his mind, “No! Wait a milkshake. Can I get a chocolate milkshake?” He tapped his fingers against the table in a rapid motion and closed the book he was currently reading and set it away. “Sorry- I know it probably looks like I’m a crazy person right now. But uh- I’ve just been up for like 20 hours or something. So more sleep deprived than anything else.”
Being nosy wasn’t exactly on Frankie’s personality traits list, but it would be a lie if she didn’t try to peek at what the guy was reading, curiosity getting the best of her. At first she had just assumed it was some college boy drowning before finals, but if that had been the case there would’ve been many other late night owls trying to do last minute cramming too. But whatever it was he was reading, it didn’t look like textbooks but rather just some old books. It looked pretty cool, and if her own experience with waitresses had taught her anything, is that they loved some good gossip. As he drank from his fresh lemonade - which, by the way, she’d had to refill once more - she carefully took the fries so none would fall on the open pages in front of him. “No problem. I need to keep the cook awake somehow.” A quick wink, before she listened once more, and she couldn’t contain the soft laugh that bubbled after his sudden change of mind. “Chocolate Milkshake it is. And, for future reference, we do not have energy drinks, but we have hella good coffee.”
The smile decorating her face widened, her cheeks pushing her eyes and slightly narrowing them as she listened him talk at full speed. He reminded her of herself when she started ranting about whatever was on her mind with total strangers, except Frankie never knew when to stop. “Not at all. If anything, those guys are the only crazy I’ve had to deal with tonight,” Her thumb pointed over her shoulder to the only other costumers, who seemed to be banging the table now as one of the crew chugged his beer. It also helped that his aura was super dim in comparison, the soft red mixed with turquoise a nice break from the bright, glowing yellow coming from the other side of the diner. “I didn’t want to interrupt you but you seemed like you needed a refill,” Since you’ve been sitting there practically not moving for a while, she almost added, but lip her lip to stop herself. With her chin, she motioned to his books and papers. “Watcha’ reading?”
The waitress was friendly, and much nicer to talk to than some of the people Orion ran into at restaurants late at night around town. He didn’t necessarily blame them. Most people that were out in the middle of the night tended to be drunk or shifty in their eyes. Rio just so happened to fall into that crowd. He noted the lack of energy drinks which was a bummer. He thanked her, deciding that it wasn’t worth it to let her know that he didn’t drink coffee. When there was a frustratingly loud noise, Rio glanced around the waitress and found the group loudly demanding another to chug by slamming their fists against the table. It was probably loud enough to normal people in the restaurant. For Rio, it was deafening. He cringed, rubbing his fingers against his ears in an attempt to drown out some of the noise. If he was less tired, he may be able to focus it out, but right now he didn’t have much energy left to expend.
At her question, Rio glanced around at the table, a conglomerated mess scattering all corners made Rio look like some crazed lunatic. Maybe that wasn’t too far off at this point. He had wasted some many hours of his day, avoided so much sleep completely devoted to researching these demons and visions. It was tiring. “You’re not interrupting at all, I really appreciate the refill,” Rio began, trying to figure out exactly how to explain the information sprawled out across the table. Any prolonged glance would show that not everything written in the texts was English. While some was Latin, a language Rio had been fluent in since middle school, most of it was some kind of ancient language, assumed to be demonic. He had not made much progress in translating those yet. “Summer classes.” Rio finally settled on, giving a troubled grin to the waitress and shrugging, “Occult studies class. Super interesting stuff but… a little creepy if I’m being honest. Right now I’m actually trying to learn some information about a cult that apparently operated right here in White Crest.”
Noticing that the group of men were annoying him, an apologetic smile replaced Frankie’s curious one, and she raised one finger in the guy’s direction as if asking for one second, before turning around back to the counter that served as a bar. From experience, she knew that the only way to calm down drunk men was to either give them more alcohol or give them something to canalize their energy into, like a football match on tv for the to scream to, but sadly, there were nothing on tv that late at night that could please them, so more drinks it was. Frankie’s eyes kept flying from the beers she was serving to the boy sitting alone and his books. Occult studies. That was interesting, and seemingly very on-brand with the theme this town had. After a few minutes and after bringing the beers with the check to the men who started howling and tried to convince her to talk to them, Frankie walked back to the other side of the diner, standing next to the table once again.
“Sorry, they’ll probably get louder but they should leave soon.” The last few words were spoken louder as she looked over her shoulder, and despite making it sound like she was annoyed with them, Frankie was actually laughing softly. She needed people like them to stay awake and not get bored during her shift, after all. “So, summer classes, huh. You go to college here?” Looking back at the kitchen once more to make sure the cook wasn’t watching, she slid on the seat in front of him. “Do you, uhm, mind if I take a look?” Her hand hovered on top of a book, and though she didn’t understand a word of what it said, it still looked very interesting. Cults. The mere idea of a cult being in town made her want to laugh again, Layla’s voice telling her that she should be careful in this town resonating in her head. “Hey, creepy is the best kind of interesting. Like, have you seen the X Files?” Looking at another book, she tried to read the title out loud, very slowly to try to get the pronunciation right but completely failing. “I think I just butchered that. What language is this? I know a little bit of french and this is definitely not french.”
The waitress disappeared for a moment and Rio glanced over a few moments later to see her taking more drinks over to the group. He smirked to himself, wondering if he had been obvious that the noise had bothered him. “Oh no worries at all, I appreciate the attempt. I don’t have claim over the restaurant or anything.” He shrugged, acting unbothered by the noise. It really wouldn’t bother him if he could get the hearing under control. Instead, certain instances or specific noises would catch him off guard. “I do! Majoring in history and computer science.” The waitress slid into the seat across from Rio and showed an increased interest in what he had been studying. He tried to take a quick assessment of her, to try to figure out exactly why she seemed so fascinated by the topics that Rio was reading. A fellow avid learner, maybe? Someone interested in the supernatural? Or someone that already knew about the supernatural and was trying to gauge how much Rio knew. Rio couldn’t be sure, not yet at least.
When she asked to take a look, Rio just nodded. “The X-Files terrified me. I was always fascinated by the stuff I read about it online but whenever I tried watching it I’d have nightmares for a week.” She read a piece aloud from a text, the pronunciation being off but the words not completely unintelligible. Some of the text that Rio found seemed to be some older type of demonic language translated by humans. It wasn’t easy to explain considering Rio wasn’t able to translate it himself and there was no easy way to explain that it was a completely unknown language. Rio laughed softly, “Definitely not French.” Rio spoke in French, a simple translation. He leaned over to take a look at the book that the waitress was looking at. “Hard to tell honestly.” He tapped his finger against his chin, trying to figure out exactly how to explain it to her without sounding completely insane. “I can see some hints of Latin in it. But most of it is just… nothing. If I had to guess, it was the attempt by some cult at creating their own mix of language to communicate with demons or spirits.” That was not Rio’s guess at all, but it certainly seemed more likely than being the actual language of a demon. “I’m uh- I’m Orion by the way. Or Rio. I go by whichever. It’s nice to meet you!”
Frankie’s hand made a vague gesture, as if telling him it was nothing. “It’s cool, serving drinks and food is only part of the job, I need to make sure all the clients are comfortable.” It had been, probably, the only thing she had been good at so far. Her eyes tried to pick up anything from all the words spread in front of her, but failed miserably. “Wow, double majoring? You must be a huge nerd.” As soon as the words left her mouth, Frankie had a hand flying to cover her mouth, eyes wide and her cheeks quickly flushing into a bright red. “I’m--- Sorry I didn’t mean that as an--- That was a compliment, actually---” Her words stumbled with each other, and she couldn’t find a way to apologize fast enough. The floor of the diner needed to hurry and swallow her already before she started blurting anymore embarrassing stuff to a guy she had just met. His aura didn’t seem to flicker at all, though, which could only mean he hadn’t been bothered by it. It helped her relax a little, and she took another piece of paper between her hands, trying to make some sense of it.
“That’s, uhm, so wild. When I moved in the last thing I expected to run into was a demonic cult. There was this girl back in Nashville that disappeared for like, a couple of weeks, everyone thought she had been kidnapped or had run away but turns out she had joined a satanic cult or something like that. I never understood it, honestly.” Eventually, she let go of the piece of paper, a silent acceptance that no matter how hard she tried, she wouldn’t spontaneously learn neither Latin or… whatever nonsense the cultists had invented. “Oh, right. I’m, uh--” And like a kid proud of a toy, she looked down to her name tag, and then looked back at him, a grin on her face as she pointed at it. “Frankie. Nice to meet you too, Rio.” And because she didn’t know when to shut up, she added. “Have you tried searching for the Orion constellation?”
Orion paused at being called a nerd. Not because the word had offended him, but because her response had stunned him. She had been so embarrassed that Rio had just stared at her for a long moment while she stumbled through explaining herself. Finally, Rio burst into laughter. It was louder than his usual laughter was, a sort of uncontrolled and hysteric chuckling that Rio did not usually allow himself. He could only blame it on the lack of sleep. “You don’t have to apologize for anything,” Rio finally spoke, wiping the tears from his eyes that had escaped during the laughter. “I do take that as a compliment. Plus, I’ve heard enough people say stuff like that intending for it to be taken as an insult that eventually you start figuring out when someone means something in a good or bad way.” That was too much information that this girl, Frankie, did not need to know. “Oh. Yikes. That’s scary, I hope she uh- got out of that cult.” Sounded dangerous. Rio had read enough about cults to know how they recruited people, but he couldn’t imagine himself ever being trusting enough to ever join one. Especially one like that. “So you’re not from around here, apparently? New to town?” It begged the question, why? Why are you here? Why anyone would come to this town would always baffle Rio. “Oh yeah. It’s usually pretty easy to pick out. And I’ve studied a lot of Greek Mythology so it’s cool to tie that in with the name of the constellations.”
Rio’s laugh made Frankie’s embarrassment even worse, her face lowkey burning. Well, at least he took the joke well, and the teen definitely could relate. She was lucky not to get bullied back in school partly because of the cheer squad and because of Layla, but most of her friends were absolutely trashed, and nerd was definitely on the list of worst things someone could be called. “Well, you’re the coolest nerd I’ve met so far, so those who tried to insult you can go suck on a lemon. And she was fine after a while. I mean, she had to do her freshman year again but that was better than the… possibility, I guess.” Whatever that was. All she knew about cults was the little glimpses she had gotten from the very occasional and rare case she could see in the news, and stuff she had seen in tv shows. Not that she wanted to know more, really, her life had already turned confusing enough and adding cults would just make things worse. Leaning forward in the table, the teen rested her elbows and used one hand to support her face, eyes still looking at the scattered paper and open books. “Yeah, I moved in from Nashville a few weeks ago to, uh, be with my girlfriend.” Understatement of the year, but there was no other way to say she had tracked down her werewolf girlfriend after she vanished for a whole year without sounding like a complete lunatic. A humm left her lips, hazel eyes now fixated on the guy. “I always thoughts most constellations were related to the zodiac, you know, since many of them are… well, zodiac signs. I don’t really know much about them. I just liked stargazing when I was a kid and my grandma showed me a few.”
“You need to meet more nerds than.” Orion laughed again. In what alternate hell dimension would Rio ever be considered a cool nerd? There were others that deserved that title way more than himself. Winston, Blanche, Skylar. All three were way cool humans that also happened to be super smart. Rio was still trying to wrap his head around the idea that someone around Rio’s age would willingly move to White Crest when she mentioned the girlfriend. It made his face begin blushing and an awkward smile broke out across his face. “Sounds romantic.” Rio said, unsure if that was the right thing to say or not. Rio wasn’t exactly a guru on relationships. He had never even been in one before. “So you came here with no one else? Just your girlfriend?” Rio asked, before letting out a low whistle, “Woah. That’s… crazy brave.” Rio couldn't imagine how much courage that must take. “There’s this guy I know. I grew up with him sort of. I never really knew what having a crush meant growing up but looking back I… well it checked all the boxes. I still avoid him. On the college campus.” Rio facepalmed himself in embarrassment. He couldn’t believe he just said that. To a stranger. “Are you uh- Adjusting to town well?”
Astronomy had never been Rio’s passion or his forte, neither was stargazing. But he knew enough about greek mythology to have dipped his toes in astronomy. “You're right! A lot of them are related to the zodiac. The zodiac signs actually come from Greek mythology. In fact, zodiac comes from the Greek word zōdiacus which roughly means the cycle of animals.” Frankie had unknowingly opened a can of worms that Rio wasn’t sure he could close back up. “All of the zodiac signs correspond to living creatures. Well except Libra, which is ironically my sign. But anyways, each of the constellations usually relate back to some story from Greek or Roman mythology. Like Leo is tied to Hercules and his labor’s. Hercules skinned a lion and wore it’s pelt, making him practically invincible. Or ScorpioScorpio, who actually has ties to Orion. There’s been a lot of different stories about Orion the hunter. Some say he was put up into the sky by the Goddess Artemis who loved him, others say that he was put up there as punishment for being too boastful. With scorpio eternalized for killing him.” Once Rio finally shut up he realized how dry his mouth had become. This wasn’t an uncommon problem when Rio got on one of his soap boxes. He took a drink from the lemonade that Frankie had brought him and scratched at his neck nervously, “Sorry I uh- get passionate.”
Well, he wasn’t wrong. Frankie definitely needed to meet more friends, whether they were nerds or not. Letting out a soft humm, she tapped her lips for a moment as she thought out loud. “I wouldn’t say we came together? I came to this town because she was here.” Brave was definitely one way to describe it. Frankie would always believe it had been her only choice and the right thing to do, whilst her mom kept repeating on the phone that it had been the dumbest and childish idea she ever had. Shrugging, she rested her cheek on her palm once more, listening to his story, letting out a laugh when he covered his face. “That sounds too far from how I realized I liked liked Layla- that’s my girlfriend. We were best friends for ages, and one day we were watching Buffy and she said something that made me look, I don’t remember what honestly, but I just, I kept looking at her instead of the tv and just… kinda knew, yanno?” There were few things Frankie could go on about for hours: math, the meaning behind colors, and how she would follow Layla to hell if she asked her to. Though from recent events maybe she had done that already.
Pursing her lips, she looked at the ceiling as if thinking, before looking back at him with a shrug. “Town’s alright. Definitely not Nashville, but I never was a big city girl anyways.” Meaning, she liked the quietness and the considerable lower number of people on the streets that potentially gave her anxiety attacks. The human listened in silence as Rio rambled, a wide smile creeping in the longer he spoke. In another life where she weren’t a raging lesbian, and in different circumstances that involved not noticing the flaming aura that got more intense as he spoke, she would’ve even found him cute. “Don’t you dare apologize, Orion, trapped by Artemis.” Though she hated feeling like she was taking up his study time, he also looked like he desperately needed a break. After winking at him, she stretched slightly and moved out of the booth, standing in front of him once more. “I will go get you that chocolate milkshake, and maybe you can tell me Sagittarius’ story in return?”
Orion listened intently to the story, fascinated by how this girl had the courage to just pick up her life and move somewhere completely new all to be with her girlfriend. Rio wasn’t sure he would have the courage to do that if he was married to the person moving. But Frankie was fearless, clearly. And Rio could learn a thing or two about taking chances, if his own personal life was any indication. Plus- Wait did she just say Layla? “Hold on- Layla? This may be too much of a coincidence… but like Layla, redhead, born to play Cherry Valance in a remake of The Outsiders, Layla? I know her. Really well actually she’s a friend of mine.” Woah. Rio had heard about a girlfriend, but had no idea that the girlfriend had shown up to town. Admittedly the two hadn’t talked a lot recently. Just with how busy things were with the demons stuff, Rio had turned pretty anti-social.
“Oh good. Well I’m glad you’re not annoyed. I tend to drag on like that a lot so please feel free to cut me off.” He had to admit, it was really nice getting to have a conversation with someone about something other than this demon stuff. He had spent so much time with Winston lately, which was amazing as always because he thought that Winston was the coolest person in the entire world, but with Frankie they didn’t talk about the demons or bodies of water at all. It was just a normal conversation, with a nice person. It was a nice change of pace. “Right well, Thanks for grabbing me the milkshake! And please feel free to hang out. It looks pretty boring in here right now. I can’t tell if you’re joking or not but I can totally tell you about Sagittarius . Spoiler alert, he’s a Centaur.
Hearing him describe her girlfriend made Frankie perk up, eyebrows raising in surprise. “Yep, that sounds like her alright. They say it’s a small world but damn, this town is smaller than I thought.” Coincidences like these never happened back home; and she guessed it was highly likely that Rio knew every other teen or anyone in their early twenties she had met so far. The thought made her smile, and she shoved both hands inside her uniform’s pockets. “Maybe we can do like a double date thingy if you ever decide to stop avoiding your college mate.” Was it alright to joke with something like that? She had never been too good at social situations despite her extroverted nature thanks to her anxiety.
“Oh God no, I love hearing people. I suck at talking so I love when I can just sit back and listen. Besides that’s super interesting and cool. If anything I’m sorry I’m distracting you from your, uh-” She gestured at the table in general. “-- cult investigation.” Maybe if he didn’t mind, she could even ask him about college, considering this was for a summer class. And maybe, if she was lucky, she could get to know him enough to investigate why his aura didn’t seem to flicker away from the red. He didn’t seem like a bad person in the slightest, which only made her wonder deeper why her grandma had warned her so much about them. “Not joking at all. I’m looking forward to meet this centaur boy.” And before leaving, she pointed at the food and said. “Eat your fries before I do!”

Disney 2022 Day 2 or The Day We Saved The Galaxy:
Today was Epcot day. Fair word of warning, they still haven't brought back the parking lot trams. Also, if you're rushing to your virtual queue spot for Cosmic Rewind, make sure SOMEONE remembers where you parked. This will be important later.
We were hoping to have a bit of a lie-in after being up so late for the Halloween party on Friday, however someone had to be up at 7 to try to get in the queue for Guardians. We snagged position 39 which was estimated to be called around 11:30. So I tried to go back to sleep. It didn't happen. And then when I checked the app at 8 our call back time was estimated at 10:45. By the time we got to the park, (at 9:50) our group had been called and we had to book it to the ride. In the confusion, nobody noticed where we parked. The coaster was totally worth it. Word to the wise: it is INTENSE. Almost thought Andrea might hurl. But she didn't!
Once we had recovered and found Kelly in the gift shop, it was time to eat ALL the things! First stop was Mac and Eats for Kelly and Nathan, Coastal Eats for Andrea and a fry flight from the Fry Basket for all of us!
Then, we headed to World Showcase to start the rounds, however we decided to start by grabbing the PB&J wings from Brew-Wing. OMG guys those things are AMAZING! We need to find a knockoff recipe for home because I could eat a literal ton.
We couldn't stop eating long enough to get a good pic lol. We bucked tradition and started in Mexico today. It was a good choice because Donald was out in his 3 Caballeros outfit. Got my first character hug in over 20 years!
We got a crispy paneer from the India booth. For four people who love fried cheese none of us really liked it. The watermelon Dole Whip we found afterwards was a suitable palate cleanser. We wanted to go see the American Adventure show for some A/C but it was closed for refurbishment. Then, we were in Japan. You know what happened next. Kakigori.
Nobody EVER sits in the bamboo Grove. Shhh it's our secret! We had fried cheese from Greece with a much-needed Power-Ade. Nathan wanted maple popcorn from Canada so we headed that way, but ran into Mary Poppins on the way.
Then it was off to Soarin' in the Land pavillion, my wife's favorite ride. But I got a LITTLE distracted on my way there.
He really liked my outfit! Then it was Turtle Talk with Crush at the Seas and we were heading back to the room for an early night... except remember when I said nobody noticed where we parked? It took us at LEAST half an hour to find the car. Not how we wanted to end the day, but we still had fun!

main points:
- breakfast muffin
- binge another few episodes of the punisher + sandwich for lunch
- asia trip planning with dimitri
- dinner with chris eric and mylinh
- finish season 2 of the punisher
- hang out with sheena
today i:
- woke up at 10:30am and snoozed a bit until 11am again. the construction guy wasn’t here today cause we haven’t gotten the countertops in yet, still waiting on the other company to do that. mom was working from home though
- i went downstairs and ate the last banana nut muffin + some milk. i finished half of it and then wanted something salty. so i made a sandwich. just a plain old whole grain + ham + cheese. LOL. our toaster and microwave are still functioning while there’s renovations so that’s all i could really make. i didn’t wanna wash the dishes too if i used cooking utensils. so i just kept it simple. ate it with another bag of chips
watched 3 episodes of the punisher from S2E9 to S2E12. i was engrossed in the series it was reaaaaaally good. i feel like there were some plot holes though. or kind of felt like it. but it definitely kept up the action as well/was still entertaining. also i finished the second half of the muffin at some point as my mini dessert
- around 4:30pm dimitri messaged me asking if i wanted to do planning now instead of tomorrow. cause we were gonna call tonight but then i had dinner plans so i couldn’t so i pushed it back to tomorrow. but he got off work early so i was like sure why not, i’m not really doing much anyway :p
- we planned out all of the lodging for shanghai, HK and thailand. all that’s left is beijing and we should be set. we looked roughly into what we might wanna do in HK and thailand, but were more so focused on getting housing. but since housing kind of goes hand in hand with lodging, it also made sense to at least consider it. we were on facetime for maybe two hours until like 7pm. we also just kind of chatted a bit about smash and personal finance. dad gave me the chase debit card that came in
- at 7pm i had a small bowel movement (second one of the day) and then went to a wings place where they have specials. i met up with eric chris and mylinh. they had gotten there earlier, picking chris up at the train station and anticipating a line wait. but they got seated right away. we were supposed to meet up at 7:30 there but they were already there at 7:15. so i rushed over and got there at like 7:35pm. i hadn’t seen eric or mylinh in like a year which is wild. we all caught up a bit about what we’re up to / working / school / career stuff. then we talked about CSGO and fortnite. and smash 4 and melee, zero, leffen armada. a bit about the superbowl coming up. eric talked about the controversial pass interference call in one of the championship games. we all shared some tater tots and then got two orders of fries and shared those. everyone got 10 wings. i got bbq and finished them all. and most of the fries. omg i was bloated. jesus. it was my second time ever there. the first time was last year when i met up with mylinh and eric :p
- we left around 9pm and i got back around 9:30pm. i came back and finished the final episode of the punisher :O S2E13. that was a really interesting ending... almost kind of anti climactic... although i don’t really know what i was expecting, maybe a flashier bigger battle...? oh well, still a really good TV show
- went to check in on sheena and she seemed a bit upset :/ i talked with her a bit and then got the giggles and couldn’t stop laughing which got her laughing a bit :p but she also wanted to be left alone so that she could let out her emotions. i didn’t want her to be sad/cry so i kept staying with her in her room. she said i was like baymax from big hero 6. then eventually she left and walked downstairs and i followed her. and then we hung out downstairs for a while, me bothering her and her just wanting to be alone... :s and then we went back upstairs. i told her i’d leave her alone and take a shower so she stayed in her room and i showered for 20 minutes. then i went to check in on her and she seemed better / started to work on her two essays
- i chilled with her from 12:30am-1:28am and i’m about to go to sleep. i was catching up on yesterday and today’s blog posts. whew so tired. gonna wake up tomorrow at 8:30am to hop on a call with walter
also health update. i tried to apply the hydrocortisone deeper by using a laying down position and it just might’ve worked... cause i’ve been having maybe 2 or 3 loose watery stool tonight after i got back from wings dinner... maybe it’s inflammation of the rectal area because of the medicine? or maybe it’s just cause the tip of the applicator wasn’t properly cleaned... who knows. i guess we’ll see
okay i’mma go to sleep GOOD NIGHT
the end

TGI Tuesday
Something intensely un-good was happening to Yvonne.
She was missing calls. Daydreaming. Humming and smiling to herself.
These were not normal.
Yvonne didn't notice the change at first but, looking back, she knew when it started.
It had started four days prior, on a Tuesday. Worst day of the week because you haven't braced for it like Monday, it's pre-the-work-week-hump and it always feels like there's three years before lunch but then 6 second until EOD.
Anyway, it's a Tuesday. Yvonne is wearing Tuesday-ish clothes. Nothing fancy. A little bookish, a little muted. No meetings, no lunches, no plans.
Just a fucking Tuesday.
Except not just a fucking Tuesday because that was the day she walks in. Like a warm breeze in autumn, full of non-specific nostalgia and hope for a little more good weather.
Damn. That kind of flowery bullshit was also not normal. This was clearly getting worse...
She walks in like it was nothing. Like she was not heartbreak waiting to happen. she walks in, right, and just smiles.
Who does that? Who smiles like that? Like- Stop. Yvonne put a heavy lid on that little line of evocative imagery.
So, she smiles. But not at her. She was smiling at Yvonne's colleague, Adam.
Adam was a perfectly nice guy but Yvonne spent as little time with him as she could. It wasn’t personal, it was just better if she kept her coworkers at arms length. Life is too short to spend it doing drinks with Lisa from accounts. Again, nothing personal.
The smiling spreads ripples around the office. Everyone was hot and bored so this new energy was invigorating. The urge to smile infects some but mostly it sparks whispers.
Yvonne's desk mates gossiped around her. They'd grown too weary of her polite brevity to try to include her but this time her ears tuned in.
From hushed snippets, she pieced together that this was some kind of relative of Adam's, staying with him for a few days. Apparently Adam had been lobbying for time off to play host to this highly favoured relative but it fell through. When talk shifted to whoever's early labour torpedoed Adam's plan, Yvonne switched off again. She hadn't even realised anyone was pregnant and obviously she was too late to invest in that story line.
Adam's whole body lit up at the sight of his family member standing near the entrance of the open plan office. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe their movements towards each other as "bounding", not unlike littermates reunited after a long separation. But surely these two had seen each other that morning?
Yvonne picked up her mug, along with the pretense of nonchalance, and walked over to the small crowd that had formed around her colleague and his new visitor. She didn't want to get too close, she just wanted to bask in the warmth of her- Nope. She rapped her fingers against the plan white cup, trying to drown out her softer self.
Lost in her attempts to regulate her emotions, Yvonne didn't notice that she was in the middle of a plan being hatched. The relative had come to pick Adam up for lunch and extended the invitation to any willing party in the office. It'd be a short walk to a street food market then a leisurely stroll through a park on their way back.
A tap on her shoulder nudged Yvonne out of her daze.
Was she coming?
To?
Before she heard the answer, that smile caught her eye. This time, it's full brilliance was directed at her.
She nodded without internalising what she was agreeing to. It didn't matter. She would walk a thousand miles for that smile. Fuck.
The pack scattered and regrouped in the time it took Yvonne to remember that she needed to put her mug back. She got swept up in the mass exodus before she made it to her desk. Someone took her cup out of her hand and spirited it away as they hustled her out of the office. It was an ambitious trip, they had to make good time on the first leg or they'd have to rush back.
The cheery horde funneled down the stairs and out the door into the open air, chatting amongst themselves and around Yvonne. She was not a regular fixture at non-mandatory work social events so she fell through the cracks as friendship groups found each other. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing. She could spend the time thinking about what to do with the meal she'd brought from home that was sitting in the communal fridge.
Arms folded and shoulders tight, she ran through her options in her mind. Would it keep til the next day? Should she take it home and eat it? Maybe if she just bought a drink at this food market, she could eat her lunch at her desk while finishing her reports...?
One of the splinter groups slowed to let Yvonne catch up and the apparent leader struck up a conversation. Had she ever been to the market before? Did she have any food allergies? Was there something she was hoping to find?
Yvonne sense the group wanted more than her three short no's so she added a little colour. She was a fan of spicy food and had once gone to a food festival which featured competitive eating. She had, on the spur of the moment, decided to try her hand but came 3rd from last out of ten.
The group seemed more impressed than she expected! They all congratulated her on trying, each insisting they would have passed out if given anything hotter than supermarket sweet chili sauce. Yvonne felt her own smile tugging at her lips but she didn't let herself feel it.
Getting to the market took less time than expected and Yvonne had been too busy small talking to finish meal planning. It didn't matter though because she never would have envisioned the array of options. It was almost overwhelming and made worse by the heat of the sun which seemed to linger at its peak long after noon.
Someone from the splinter group fell into step with Yvonne and began chatting energetically about a particular stalls which specialised in gluten free fried chicken. The sauces were apparently to die for but this person had avoid one of the options because it had a five chili rating. May Yvonne would like to give that one a go?
Yvonne didn't know how to say no to this new, earnest friend. They'd listened to her, thought about what she would like and then came forward with an idea for her. She'd have to eat her packed lunch for dinner and muscle through these wings to avoid awkwardness but honestly, Yvonne wasn't mad at it.
The wing stall was a little deeper into the market than the stalls most of the group had picked. Yvonne followed closely behind her workmate. Bobbing as they bobbed and weaving as they weaved. It was only a few moments but something about the synchronised movements felt fun, though Yvonne couldn't put her finger on the memory that was causing it.
Before she could fully assess, Yvonne bumped into her colleague who had abruptly stopped to greet someone. Actually, two people. Adam and his relative were a metre away and beaming. Yvonne felt sick.
She was completely caught off guard. All these new feelings and interactions had pushed the original purpose of this excursion out of her mind. Now, faced with the object of her curiousity and with hardly any buffer between them, Yvonne was beginning to regret her decision to leave the safety of her desk.
Adam spear headed the unification of the two pairs into one, hungry super-group. They were both looking for the wing stall and his relative, a cousin, was keen to try the hottest sauce available. What a wonderful coincidence! Obviously this merger had been pre-ordained. They would search as a unit. Eight eyes were better than four.
Yvonne's arms crossed themselves over her chest. She hadn't even noticed them relaxing down to her side but the tension was back. Adam was keen to introduce her to Jules who was keen to say her name over and over as part of a memory trick. Six to make it stick...s. Everyone chuckled.
Ali, Adam, Jules and Yvonne. From 13, to 2, to 4, but still no food. Time was ticking away.
Ali took charge of the expedition in peak Ali-fashion, or at least what appeared to be a pretty consistent pattern of behaviour over the 20 minutes Yvonne had observed. Being the only two who had ever see the intended destination, Adam and Ali paired up to lead the pack. It was a second or two before Yvonne realised what that meant.
If you've ever seen a dog chase a car and then have no idea what to do when the car stopped, Yvonne was the dog. Feeling infinitely foolish and clinically awkward, she wordlessly fell into step with the reason she was out in the sun, hunting an elusive chicken wing vendor on a Tuesday afternoon.
Jules seemed content to maintain the silence but with far less observable angst. Yvonne pondered the causal relationship between hotness and being able to withstand heat because, while she was painfully aware of the sweat under her rather flimsy blouse, Jules seemed icy cool in an uncomfortably thick hoodie. While Yvonne's hair clung to the moisture from her scalp, Jules' shoulder length locks seemed completely unaffected.
Yvonne realised that Jules had noticed her stares later than she should have. There was that fucking smile again. If her cheeks could glow red, they would. They talked. It was nice. Jules was staying with Adam until paperwork for a rental was approved. Adam had a spare room and loved having guests, it gave him an excuse to do tourist shit. He had a surprising fondness for kitsch.
Jules had the kind of voice you wanted to listen to and a laugh you wanted to share and hair you wanted to run your fingers through and lips- You get the picture. Jules drew you in then made you feel like you were meant to be there.
They walked and talked and smiled and laughed and bumped into each other as they maneuvered through the crowd. Yvonne's heart didn't know whether to race or jump for joy so instead it just pumped hard enough for her to feel it in her earlobes. If only the hour could last forever.
That wistful thought snapped Yvonne back to reality. She stopped. Where were Ali and Adam? Where was the rest of the group? What was the time?
Gone, gone and too late to keep hunting for the stall. She would have to walk pretty briskly to make it back on time. Jules quickly understood her wordless panic and grasped her upper arm to reassure her and then grabbed her hand, leading the way.
Half walking half running, they made it back to the main doors with enough time for Yvonne to catch her breath. More laughter. They could both do with paying more attention to their cardio.
Maybe they could be workout buddies?
Yvonne grinned, nodding enthusiastically as she breathed deeply. She had a couch to 5k app on her phone that she had never opened. Jules asked to see it so she obliged.
As she handed over the unlocked device, Yvonne noticed a familiar face in the distance. It was Adam and Ali, each carrying a pair of boxes and mildly confused expressions. They'd forged ahead but didn't notice the separation until they had reached their destination. Once there, Ali ordered while Adam called Jules. The minutes ticked away so eventually they decided to head back to home base.
Yvonne sincerely apologised for wasting their time and reached for her phone, intending to pay them back on the spot for the food, but Jules pulled it just out of her grasp.
"It was my fault, I owe all of you so I'll get you back for today and then I'll take you all out for lunch again this week?"
She was about to protest but then Yvonne noticed something pass between the cousins. Ali opened his mouth to respond but Adam spoke over him. It was fine, he and Ali had managed to eat as they walked so Jules shouldn't worry about them.
"I guess that leaves just me and you."
They'd been texting and calling everyday since then. It was sickening. The make-up lunch got pushed into the weekend then became a dinner then a dinner before a small comedy show. A full on date but without the word.
In the time between that Tuesday afternoon and the Saturday evening Yvonne had planned 6 different outfits, two comprising of clothes she panic bought on Thursday. One included a heeled boot that she had to fish out from under her bed. None of them fit like she wanted them to.
By the time Jules was 20 minutes away, Yvonne had pulled together a 7th option that she convinced herself would do. They had met on a Tuesday where Yvonne had dressed like a Tuesday so all she had to do was look a little better but not so drastically different that she looked like she was trying too hard.
The Final Outfit gave solid Thursday afternoon vibes.
Nothing fancy. A little fun, a little playful. Some sparkle, some flair, some skin.

Dear Girl ~Stories~ the Movie 3
Caught the movie the same day it opened in Japanese cinemas! Huge spoilers and movie summary under the cut!
I have never seen the first two DGS Movies but I know it is full of crack and of HiroC bullying OnoD. Boy, I was so right! The movie from start to end was hilarious! Poor, poor OnoD!
The movie opened with HiroC and a sleepy OnoD whispering in their hotel room their theme for this ‘episode’ of DGS - “I did not bring my passport.” HiroC said that they will be going ‘overseas’ for this episode, hence why they are up bright and early to rush to Haneda airport.
Landing at the Kingdom of Kochi
Of course, they did not go overseas at all but travelled to Kochi, in which they have reimagined it as The United Kingdom of Kochi (UKK). OnoD was so peeved about it, and they had to go through a fake immigration where the officer asks them English questions like:
“What is the purpose of your trip zeyo?”
> HiroC & OnoD: Sightseeing zeyo.
“What is your occupation zeyo?”
> Japanese famous voice actor zeyo!
If they do not use zeyo at the end of their sentence, the officer pretended not to understand them at all haha!
The Kingdom’s Currency
After clearing ‘immigration’, HiroC introduced the UKK currency - zeyo. In which 100-yen is equivalent to 100-zeyo. The cast actually made coins and note for UKK. The 10,000 note had OnoD’s portrait and a moustache on it! It was so hilarious!
First, they decided to stop for a quick bite! Since Kochi City is famous for katsuo (tuna), they visited an eating place and tried katsuo tataki and some fried candied katsuo fries! Both stall vendors kept to the game and pretence of dealing in zetto, instead of Japanese yen! OnoD was screaming in aghast hahaha!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 1: Harimaya Bridge
They then got changed into the national outfit of the UKK, which is literally a samurai outfit! Then, they went sightseeing!
First, they decided to visit the famous Kochi bridge - Harimaya-bashi, a hilariously tiny, 20-meter red arched bridge. Along the way to the bridge, OnoD was gushing excitedly that this bridge is as famous as America’s Rainbow Bridge and the UK’s London Bridge. But silly OnoD mistakenly called London Bridge ‘Big Ben’ hahahaha!!!
Everyone thought it was going to be a huuuuuuge bridge but no. It was tiny af, even HiroC was wondering how on earth it got famous. They made OnoD do a voice recording for the DGS ringtone (?) download, and it was hilarious! OnoD got super embarrassed!
They also recorded some random bridge-crossing footage for the trailer, which is super funny!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 2: Kochi Castle
The team then visited Kochi Castle in their samurai outfits next! They passed the statue of Itagaki Taisuke, and HiroC joked that Itagaki-san’s raised hand must be representing the length of Kochi’s katsuo! Hahahha!
They also visited the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, and OnoD pretended to voice-over as Sakamoto while HiroC chatted to the statue.
They posed for pictures with the castle at the backdrop and made OnoD say more cheesy lines! OnoD wanted to visit the castle but HiroC trolled OnoD, saying that he can’t visit the castle because the current King of Kochi lives there. OnoD then asked who are those visitors at the viewing deck then, and HiroC said they are staff serving the King lol. The only way OnoD can enter the castle is if he becomes King. Thus, this gave birth to OnoD’s resolve to be King (now you know why the part 2 poster mentioned about being King zeyo).
Sightseeing in Kochi City 3: Lunch
The cast settled down for lunch, and ordered everything on the menu with katsuo. Two of the cast members only had saba-sushi.
Sightseeing in Kochi City 4: Katsurahama Beach
They went to the beach afterwards and made OnoD shout his promise to be King of Kochi to the sea! It was a short scene but pretty funny! Poor OnoD had to run a lot!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 5: Tosa-token Center
Kochi is also famous for their Tosa fighting dogs! They sat through a short 3-minute dog fight. I think a lot of audience members got visibly uncomfortable seeing the two dogs fight. Even OnoD started tearing up and HiroC looked really uncomfortable watching it. At the end of the fight, HiroC had to hit OnoD roughly on the chest to snap him out of his depression at seeing dogs fight. But they got to see Tosa puppies and they are HUGE!!!!! A puppy shook paws with OnoD, to his delight!
Sightseeing in Kochi City 6: OnoD’s Family Shop & Home
Next, they visited OnoD’s family shop - Ono Furniture Store! HiroC trolled OnoD that MamaD was waiting outside the shop for him, but instead it was a punk-looking lady riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle. OnoD cannot believe that lady is MamaD and she rode off after exchanging some hilarious words with the two.
The cast then entered the shop, and we saw framed pictures of idol-like OnoD on the wall! The cast also decided to purchase some furniture! UchiP decided to buy some furniture for the office and some super tacky indoor slipper stands that is shaped like a Wing Chun martial artist might use to practice fighting (Ace of Asia reference), in which 3 lucky movie viewers get to win! One girl said “But..I don’t need it.” a little too loudly, which made the whole theatre laugh. The cast explored the shop and OnoD kept encouraging them to buy something, especially the huge vase that is on sale (refer to part 2 poster).
Since no one is at the shop, they then decided to pop by OnoD’s home to greet his parents! The scene opened with OnoD looking embarrassed af in his living room haha! MamaD and PapaD had masks on, and us audience members also got a mask as a gift!
We got to see pictures of OnoD when he was in elementary school (HE WAS SO CUTE OMG), and trophies from his seiyuu career. MamaD shared a bit of all the mementos of her son, and could remember every single picture, autograph and magazine. We can see she is OnoD’s biggest supporter.
While MamaD prepared dinner, HiroC went to OnoD’s childhood bedroom. He then showed us some of his very old anime collection, and suddenly went to dig through his study desk! He found an old cassette player and his first generation gameboy console, which HiroC agreed that it was super nostalgic! Suddenly, OnoD opened the lowest drawer to reveal lots of old academic textbooks and paper, and started digging behind frantically to...PULL OUT A 2005 COPY OF PLAYBOY MAGAZINE!!!!! OH MY GOSH, everyone started clapping in the theatre as HiroC flipped though the magazine while OnoD shared about when he got this magazine (he was 25 years old then) and how he managed to hide it all these while. Thank god the magazine had mosiac over it, but yes - naked women!
After that, they went down and MamaD had made a feast for the cast and crew! She even made OnoD’s favourite tamagoyaki & HiroC’s Hamburg steak. OnoD got emotional as he heard his mom talk about him, and they celebrated his birthday with cake!
As part 1 of the movie wrapped up, OnoD invited HiroC to stay overnight at his house. But...did HiroC stay overnight? We will only find out in part 2 of the movie!
We then got to see teasers of part 2 as well as some funny behind-the-scenes footage during the credits!
It was a really funny movie and my cheeks hurt from laughing and grinning so much! The theatre also sold official movie goods and DGS expo goods as well, but I didn’t get any!
I can’t wait to watch part 2 but I am not sure if I will be able to catch it as I will not be in Japan during the first few days of its release! But, I shall try!

It had taken a while–hours before he was able to wrestle his shaking, nauseating dread back into it’s chains, but excitement had taken its first tentative wing-beats against his heart. Glee, even. He had been given a fairly substantial stipend with which to supply his class, which he carefully ordered down next to his growing list of creatures to explore and spells to teach. He was going to need supplies. He was going to need books for research.
He was going to be a Professor.
Whenever this thought ambled amiably across his thoughts, the empty feeling from the news about Sirius was lit with a warm glow deep in his chest. It was pride and fear and anticipation and joy all muddled up together. He, Remus John Lupin, was going to help people. He was going to have a job and a home. He was going to have a purpose. A purpose that Albus Dumbledore obviously thought he was capable of taking on, which made him swell a little more. After the conversation had sunken in, Remus had gone to the nearest craft store and bought gold lettering. He spent half an hour applying it painstakingly to his suitcase, propped on the windowsill with the best lighting and checking with his wand to make sure it was straight, standing in the sun.
Stretching his back and his wrists, he attempted to keep from smiling like some sort of child at the holidays as he surveyed his work. Professor R. J. Lupin. He had used his own money, and had had to make the decision between the letters for his full first name or his title, but the shining gold had seemed too much like a promise to let himself forget. So he had chosen Professor, almost as if the spelling of it was like a charm, to make it absolutely and immutably true. Professor.
He was starting to get the wrenching twinges in his gut, the ache in his bones that signaled the growing of the moon, but even that did little to dim this light that had been ignited in his chest. Hogwarts would come after; there was now something to look forward to. Unfortunately, it made it hard to eat–food started smelling wrong and tasting worse. There had been dark hints in his research long ago that raw meat might help but he stoutly refused; he was not an animal. They had told him. He was not an animal. So, with optimism slightly bolstered, he got himself some slightly greasy take-out, managed to force it down and set about writing letters, requesting recommendations for his curriculum. It was an agreeable way to spend the afternoon, sitting on the floor with his knees propped up, the only sounds were the low murmuring of a television somewhere, the gurgle-clunk of the pipes, and the scratching of his quill. Luckily for him, most of the other tenants were out working or doing whatever else they might do, so it was quiet. He migrated across the room to follow the splotch of sun let in his windows, scooting every few minutes to stay in it’s light.
Until his stomach gave a violent lurch that had him scattering parchment and dashing for the bathroom, where he lost his wrestling match with lunch. It was significantly worse the second time around. He rinsed his mouth, washed his face. Methodically, he collected every page with slightly trembling hands and set back to work, resolute. This needed to be done sooner rather than later, and he would have to write the curriculum while he was convalescing after this month’s Change, for soon, money would be too tight to even get take out, let alone keep his flat. The job hunt needed to be started soon, after he had been sacked from his last one as a late night grocery store clerk. There had been several bad months in a row where he couldn’t make it to work for at least 3 days after the full moon and after the 2nd time, they had just gotten fed up and let him go. He supposed it was better than being publicly fired for showing up looking like he was in a secret fight club after his Changes, like the last job before this.
After the 5th letter, his hand was cramping and the bone-deep ache was getting worse, with a rising restlessness he was all too well acquainted with. Sighing defeat, he rose, rolled his neck and dressed for bed.
The next day, he finished, gathered, folded and sealed all the letters–Muggle paper and envelopes as parchment and wax seals were out of his budget at the moment. He tucked them neatly into his inner cloak pocket and set to donning the robes he’d set out to air soon after Dumbledore had left. It had been a long time since he had had to move seamlessly through a Wizarding space and when he straightened his cuffs and set all his clasps to rights, he felt a little taller. A little less invisible. The comforting weight at his wrists, down his back, swinging against his legs seemed to trigger some sense memory in him as he Apparated into Diagon Alley.
It was as though he was arriving as he was now along with his echoes through time; as he had been all through his school years and even before, when he had visited with his Father when he was just a lad. The cheerful chatter, the bubbling, sparkling, cracking, fizzing, furling signs and banners to catch the eye. The mournful hoots and yowling of cats from the menagerie and the wafting scent of fried meat and candied nuts wove in and out of crowd-packed streets that were a riot of robes of jewel tones and pastels. For a man who had been living along for a little more than a decade, the clamoring cheer of it stunned him momentarily and it was all he could do to just marvel with the eyes of his childhood self. This was magic. This was belonging.
How many times had he walked these streets, a quarter of a group, goggling in windows and laughing too loud? How many times had they strolled as if they ruled these cobblestone streets by the right of their brash adolescence? Not enough, a soft voice tolled in the back of his mind and he forcefully derailed that train of thought with a shove. He would not do this in the middle of the street.
Purposefully, he strode off toward the Post Office, quirking a small smile at anyone who met his eye. A small boy wove in between his legs and a harried looking short man barreled after him with a muttered apology. He saw the alley where the Marauder’s had–no, not now. A group of young foreign witches were debating loudly in another language–Romanian?–under the technicolored umbrella of Florence Fortescue’s ice cream parlor, gesturing animatedly at a map before them on the table. Roughly 5 goblins stalked past him, ignoring all else as they headed straight for the mouth of Knockturn Alley. Truly, if he felt like people watching, this was obviously the place to be. But, for today, he was armed with a budget and a purpose; the education of young people, and he refused to take that lightly.
He spent a good hour running errands after he had mailed the letters out, feeling strange not needing to send them off at separate times to stagger his spending. Rarely had he had this much leisure money in the past, certainly not enough to rent 8 separate first class owls to send his mail. Though, come to think of it, he had not had anything that urgent to say to anyone, lately.. Most of the day had been ordering in supplies rather than gathering them, but he had spent so much time talking, walking, and exploring, he felt as if he had been here several days already. The ache had migrated to his thigh bones and his lungs seemed unsure what shape they were going to take today–2 more days until the full moon. He would have to take it easy tomorrow or he would be unable to leave bed for a week after the Change as he no longer had the wonderful medical, magical aid of Poppy Pomfrey to patch him up quick and send him on his way.
Remus brightened at this thought. Luckily, he soon would. It would be wonderful to catch up with her again, once he was back–back– again, after the summer. Only 2 more moons, as luck would have it. With this happy thought, he allowed himself to settle in the shade of one of the loudly decorated umbrellas in front of the ice cream shop to stretch his legs out before him. A man with the most enormous moustache and pipe he had ever seen was rising from the table next to him, leaving behind a haphazard stack of the Daily Prophet, dated to only a few days ago. A movement caught his eye from the front page and the contented bliss he had managed to cultivate disappeared in a rush of cold. His stomach clenched roughly at the thought, but he needed to know…needed to see….”Ah, sir? Might I…?” he gestured to the paper.
The man gave an uninterested shrug. “Eh, take ‘em; they’re days old, anyhow.”
Remus thanked him and gathered them carefully, meticulously tapping them into place, lining up the corners and smoothing it out until he could no longer pretend he wasn’t stalling. Deep breath. He looked down and before he could stop it, a soft, strangled noise managed to escape him.
My God.

Clicking my camera’s flash down with my finger I hold it up to my right eye, putting one knee on the pavement far faster than I needed to. ‘That’s gonna leave a nice bruise’ I thought, mentally scolding myself as I felt the sharp sting starting to turn to a dull throb. There are a bird and a stray dog just across the street from me and they seem to be having a standoff. There is no way I’m missing that opportunity; the bird lungs at the sturdy looking mutt, flapping its wings and puffing its chest. The dog snaps at the bird and gets the tip of its wing in between its teeth. I quickly set my camera to burst and press down on the capture button much harder than I need to. The bird screeches and pulls it’s wing out of the dog’s mouth, most likely ripping it as it did so, and flies away. The dog’s prize seems to be a tipped over container of fries laying on the ground by a bin and the dog scurries to eat it up. When it’s finished the dog makes a sharp turn and runs off the sidewalk, checking behind itself before disappearing into the perfectly pruned park bushes. I stand back up and walk to a nearby bench to inspect my knee and look over my photos. A small pang of guilt goes through my chest as I realized I didn’t even think of trying to help the poor dog. ‘Probably would have run away from its meal if I tried that.’ I thought. I set my backpack down beside me and put my camera away before starting to roll up my jeans. The faded denim proved to be much harder to roll then I first thought, the roses embroidered on the side made it difficult to fold over itself. But as my knee finally gets past the sea of denim I can already see it was turning a darker red than I’d like. Sighing in annoyance I push my jeans back down and brush them flat to my leg before retying my shoelaces. My phone buzzes in my back pocket and I reach around to look at it. ‘Just twitt-’ I look up to see the time on my phone, ‘-wait isn’t my train leaving right now?’ I jump to my feet and grab my bag, quickly looking both ways before dashing across the road.
As soon as my feet hit the cobble of the underground streets, I knew I was doomed to miss that train. God knows why I kept running, the stop was scheduled for 5 and it was currently 5:02. I was only halfway there as I stopped and huffed at the base of the stairwell. ‘Should have just gotten the bus’ I thought, but of course, I had to be stubborn and go all this way.
“Damn it-” I put my hands on my thighs and tried to catch my breath “-nope forget it bus it is, you win lungs.” There’s a small trickle of people walking by me as I stretch my back and slowly ascend back up the cobbled steps. Stepping back onto the open streets of the city I can smell rain in the air. ‘Of course,’ I mentally sneer as I pick up my pace. I can feel my legs burning with every step and the air starts to feel thicker as thunder rolls in the distance. ‘My legs are going to be burning tomorrow’ I thought, slipping by a group of giggling teenagers. I manage to contain a snort as one of them trips over their own legs and crashes into a light post. Becoming bored of my surroundings I pull my phone out of my pocket and plug in my headphones. I click on Wild Horses before turning a corner and continue to the stop. After 5 minutes of walking, I can finally see it in the distance, I slowed down my pace and finally let my legs have a rest. Luckily this stop seems to have a cover over it, meaning if it does start to rain at least I won’t be sopping wet. Just as I reach the stop rain gently starts to fall on my arms. I rush to step inside and lean on the glass, surprisingly there doesn’t seem to be anyone else nearby or inside the bus stop. The only people around were those kids and they already ran back down the sidewalk and into a Starbucks to escape the rain. Looking down I see a snail crawling on the outside of the glass, I quickly grab my camera from my bag to take a picture of it before walking outside of the cover.
“Aren’t you photogenic,” I say, taking the snail, and moving it to a nearby tree. ‘At least I got some nice picture out of all this’ I thought, I put a black and white filter over the photo and slip my camera back into my bag. ‘Right, it’s 5:11 so I’ll only be here for about 20 minutes’ I thought whilst looking around the small shelter that doesn’t seem to have benches. I decided to take up residence in the corner, sliding my backpack onto the ground and unzipping the front pocket. My last two-way ticket for Buckie is squished at the bottom of the pocket. I sit crisscross next to my bag with my head leaning against the wall after shuffling my Spotify for the fifth time. Jet Pack Blues starts to play a little too loud as the windows begin to cloud from the rain beating down at full force.
“And then a 4-hour ride home-” I sigh, closing my eyes, and rolling my shoulders “-that I’ll hopefully be sleeping through.” Watching the rain patter against the window was calming until a clap of lightning hit a nearby building and scared me half to death. The Greyhound bus rolls to the curb at 5:30 sharp and I rush up the steps to try and keep my hair at least a little dry. I hand over my ticket and turn to look at the bus, trying to find a seat. I settle into a seat in the back to my right that has no one in the aisle, that way I can lay down. It isn’t packed, but there is a good amount of people dispersed around the bus, most of them asleep or on their phone. I skip a couple of songs before seeing Warm Foothills load up on the screen. I set my bag down in my lap and cross my arms over my chest, I can’t read most of the signs out the window since the rain is making the glass blurry. I pull out my camera once again to record as the bus starts to speed up. A leaf lands on the window and startles me, but I change my focus and manage to get a shot of it before it gets ripped off and thrown back into the wind. I put my camera back into my bag and lay my head on the window as I watch the old buildings and lush greens whiz by. I let the deep hum of the bus and the tapping of rain lull me to sleep as I hear Warm Foothills fade out and Bloom take its place.
My eyes opened to the sound of a loud hiss coming from the bus, signaling a stop. I put a hand on where my head was resting and feel the indent on my skin, trying to soothe the dull throb. I pull out my headphones to hear the announcement and realize Coffees for Closers was blasting in my ears. A ding sounds into the bus and a digital screen flashes the words DUFFTOWN STOP.
An automated voice then plays, reading out “Next stop, Buckie. Next stop, Buckie. We hope you’ve enjoyed your trip-” I put my headphones back in and tap on the song Hook before looking at the time on my phone, ‘8:31 pm’. Didn’t know I could sleep for that long on a bus without being jolted awake. ‘A new record,’ I thought, chuckling to myself. While the bus is stopped I take the opportunity to stand up and bend my already sore legs. I stretch my arms over my head and my hand hits the top of the bus as I yawn. As I sit back down I swing my legs over the two seats to my right and my ankles fall off the end of the row, oh the joys of being 6’4. I let my back rest against the chilled window and watch the people walk by the bus. A girl with red hair and a daisy behind her ear bumps into my feet while putting her bag in the overhead compartment. She didn’t seem to notice, but seeing her put her bag away made me realize that my own bag was now on the floor. Copying her actions, I stood and put my bag into the compartment. I pushed my camera back into its protective pocket before zipping it shut. The bus starts up again and I stumble back into my seat, resuming my last position, and zoning out on the window across from me. It’s stopped raining but the edges of the window still have raindrops clinging to the sides of them. Since Dufftown is so close to Buckie I didn’t bother trying to fall back asleep, instead, I pulled out my phone and started to edit my pictures from the museum. It was the only reason I ever went into Edinburgh anymore, other than going to that one underground cafe. With its fairy lights and vine-covered windows, it was like my little treat for leaving town. Before the bus stopped outside town I got a solid folder of pictures cropped and edited, even posted a couple to Tumblr. I put my phone in my back pocket and lifted my bag from the overhead latch and onto my shoulder. I held onto the seat in front of me while the bus came to a halt, the digital screen now read BUCKIE STOP. I smiled at the driver as I passed them and slowly walked down the steps and jump onto the pavement. The puddle on the ground under the steps bursts and, surprisingly, makes little sound.
My walk home wasn’t too eventful, the same it always is. I’ve walked home from this stop so many times I remember the one night I had a dream about doing it. I smile to myself as I pass by “Off the Wheaten Path”, it’s a small gluten-free bakery run by a mom and son. A metal sign with a Wheaten Terrier growling at its reflection in a puddle hangs high above the sidewalk. I’d eaten an egg and cheese sandwich before I left today but that was it. I couldn’t resist the enticing smell of chocolate radiating from the shop as turned around and stepped inside. The shop was empty except for one guy who was sat by the door, he looked up at me through his book and gave me a quick smile when the bell rang on the door. I sit down at one of the tables and put my bag beside me, unzipping it. I grab my wallet and leave the bag hanging on my chair as I wander up to the counter. The cafe itself looked old with its handmade wooden tables and sturdy whitewashed chairs. There were tons of potted plants laying around the shop, some hanging from the ceiling and others balanced on uneven shelves. A woman with bright green eyes peaks around the entrance of the kitchen and smiles at me.
“Hello love, you’re just in time! We’ll be closing in about 35 minutes” she says with a thick Scottish accent. She walks up to the counter and grabs a notepad with a pen clipped to it as I scan the chalkboard menu.
“What can I get for you?” she says, as soon as I see the words “Pistachio Muffin” written on the board I’m sold on it.
“A pistachio muffin and croissant ham sandwich,” I pull out my card as she scribbles my order down and pins the paper on a corkboard behind her; her handwritten name tag reads ‘Skye’.
“Sure thing, my son Kenny’ll bring it out to you,” she turns the card reader to me and I swipe my card, flip it around in my hands until the screen says, “Transaction Complete”. I head back to my seat and pull up Tumblr to queue some posts. A couple of minutes later Kenny taps me on the shoulder and I jumped out of my skin. My phone drops into my lap as I look up at him, but this happens to be a common occurrence. I’m naturally a jumpy person but it always ends with a good laugh. In his hand is my plate with a pistachio muffin and croissant sandwich.
“Sorry sir didn’t mean to rattle ya,” he says, sliding the plate in front of me. He seems rather shy and I take that as a hint to keep the conversation brief.
“No worries, I tend to be a jumping bean.” My fingers itched to grab my camera and take a picture of the way he’s smiling at the ground. His glassy hazel eyes watching his own shoes as he smiles. Of course, it would be extremely rude of me to pull my camera on him; although I know it’s the only thing holding me back from doing so. His short and curly yellow hair was covered in flour and dough, and his slightly hooked nose had a smudge of brown powder on it. ‘Probably some spice or something’ I thought to myself, giving him a patient smile. He pulled a small bell out of this apron and set it next to my plate.
“If ya need anything just ring that bell.” I watched as he walked away, putting my phone on the table. When I lift the bell a small piece of paper falls out with a number scratched out onto in a hurry. ‘Names Kenny if you ever want to chat’ I chuckle to myself as I pocket the small folded paper. ‘Have to put it in my phone when I get home.’ I thought.
When I left the bakery, it was a little after 9, so I was expecting to see my Amazon packages on my door. But when I turned the corner down my street, I saw the mail truck on the right side of the road. I crossed the street so I wouldn’t have to confront him and continued home. It still frustrated me that my house had to be the one all the way at the end of the block. I know full well I don’t get enough exercise so I deal with it, realizing it’s good for me. As turn past the pillars at the entrance of my house, Rosy comes up and rubs on my leg, meowing at me. I smile at the small white and orange kitten and kneel down to pet her. I could hear the bell around her neck and small silver name tag softly tapping against each other. She’s been here ever since I moved and seemed to always be around my house. Either in my backyard, at my door, or sleeping on my windowsill at any and all hours of the day. When I asked my neighbor, he told me that she belonged to someone on my street that didn’t seem to care for her anymore. Ever since I’ve just adopted her as my own as she’s such a sweet cat. Being someone who leans to the antisocial side I can also appreciate the company. I’ve thought about putting a cat door in many times but I just haven’t gotten around to ordering one. I’ve gotten into the habit of just letting her in when I open the door or, her more common entrance, jumping in through my back window. I always keep it open for her during the day but I shut it at night, most mornings I wake up to her sleeping on the window in front of my bed. As I go to open my door I hear the mail truck pull up to the house across from me. I turn around so I could put my backpack on the ground and dig my keys up. When I look up, however, I see 3 packages on the ground and a man slowly picking himself up. For a moment, I thought of just getting into my house and forgetting it ever happened. But my sympathetic side pipes up and I think back to all the times I wish someone would have given me a hand. I knew I’d never forgive myself if I turned a blind eye. I left my keys and my bag at the door, swiftly stepping over Rosy and awkwardly jogging over to him.
“Hey, are you alright?” I hold out my hand to help him up and he seems shocked to see me standing there, but grins at me nonetheless.
“Um, I think so? Might have a couple bruises but I’m fine otherwise. Just tripped when I was stepping over that ledge.” He nodded his head to the small curb that protruded from the natural grass. I have tripped over those damn curbs many times so I could sympathize. I remember the time I was in my yard trying to get a shot of the sun shining on the water. I tripped on that damn ledge and fell just like he did, the fall cost me my favorite lens. He takes my hand and stands up from the ground, brushing off the dirt from his uniform pants. His once white and pressed shirt is now covered in dirt. He turns and picks up two of the three boxes and starts walking back up to the house.
“This might sound strange but, where did you come from? I didn’t see anyone around when I left my van.” I ran to collect the other package, following him to the door.
“Oh, I live across the street and saw you on the ground and, well, I didn’t want to leave you there.” I set the box down next to where he left the others on the porch. He smiles at me as we walk back to his van.
“Well thank you, do you have anything I was supposed to bring you?” he reaches into the passenger seat and pulls out a scanner.
“Just a couple of things, some soap, shampoo and-”
“And a cat collar?” his words caught me off guard but I managed to laugh it off.
“Yeah, yep, that would be me.” Rosie’s collar seemed tight on her lately so I decided to order her a proper one. It’s made of leather and, if my measurements were right, it should fit her perfectly. ‘Need to get some bowls too so I won’t have so many dirty dishes.’
“And your name is Daniel Howell, right?” He says while entering something into the scanner. He turns to pull open the sliding door on the side of the van as I cringe at my own name.
“Yeah but it sounds really posh when you say it like that. You can just say, Dan.” I put my hands in my back pockets and rock on my feet.
“And your name?” I ask. The door slams shut and two small packages are handed to me.
“Phil, Phil Lester. I just got this job a couple days ago and it seems that even in such a small town there’s a lot to deliver.” I grabbed my packages and take a step back from him as he heads around to the driver side of his truck.
“Well, it was nice to meet you, Phil. See you next Wednesday?” He jumps back into his van and rolls down the passenger window. And I swear the smile he gave me was bright enough to blind you if you stared at it too long. His head tips ever so slightly and for a moment, his tongue starts to poke out of the side of his mouth as he smiles.
“Yeah, see you next Wednesday, Dan.” The van came to a roaring and rattling start, sounding as if it’s run these streets a thousand times. I watched as he made a U-turn and drove away after I crossed the street. Rosy meowed and let herself in as soon as I got the door unlocked. I set my bag down and let my keys fall onto the glass table by the door with a loud clang. I click the Bluetooth button on my phone and it instantly connects to the speakers scattered around my house. First Day of My Life starts to play as I lean the back of my head against the door. As the lyrics bounce around the hall I take a deep breath and smile, to no one but myself; I finally felt like this little town was becoming home.

CRAWFORD: (FRI) PACK DUNK BRUINS IN PROVIDENCE
Hartford Wolf Pack 3, Providence Bruins 1 BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Providence, RI, January 3, 2020 – Vinni Lettieri scored with 25.8 seconds left in the third period Friday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center Providence to break a 1-1 tie, in a 3-1 Hartford Wolf Pack win over the Providence Bruins. Nick Jones added an empty-net goal with 4.8 seconds remaining for the final margin, in a game that had been deadlocked at one since before the midpoint of the first period. The win improved the first-place Wolf Pack’s record to 20-8-2-5 for 47 points and widened their Atlantic Division lead over the 20-13-1-2 (43 points) Bruins to four points. Providence fell into a second-place tie with Hershey. The Wolf Pack are now 6-0-0-1 in seven games against the Bruins this season. “With the emotion, and just the level of play, I thought it was a playoff game,” Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch said. “Both teams came ready to play, with a lot on the line, and they are two pretty good teams. I thought it was entertaining, and fortunately for us, we get the result we wanted.” The game appeared headed for overtime after the Wolf Pack killed a tripping penalty called against Darren Raddysh at the 16-minute mark of the third period. Lettieri, the Wolf Pack’s leading scorer, came up with a clutch play, though, off of a rush started by a Nick Ebert feed. Boo Nieves carried the puck into the Providence zone on right wing, before losing it into the corner. He battled it away from Bruin defenseman Urho Vaakanainen, and Lettieri threw it at the net from the boards. With Matt Beleskey attacking the front of the net, Lettieri’s bid deflected past Providence goaltender Dan Vladar (28 saves). “We were surviving, with the penalty kill,” Knoblauch said. “We had a huge kill, and then after that, it looked like both teams were playing fairly safe and not taking any chances. And Lettieri threw that one to the net, and it goes in. It was nice to see Lettieri get rewarded for a game where he played hard all night.” Providence pulled Vladar for an extra attacker after the ensuing faceoff, but an Alex Petrovic pass was broken up in center ice, and Jones was able to slide the puck into the vacated cage from the center line. The Bruins grabbed the game’s first lead at 6:51 of the first period with a shorthanded goal, three seconds before a tripping penalty to Brendan Woods ended. It was an unassisted tally for Paul Carey, who skated out of the Providence zone and into the Wolf Pack end, got by Wolf Pack defenseman Yegor Rykov on the left side and cut across to put a backhand shot past Hartford goaltender Igor Shesterkin (27 saves). Tim Gettinger answered that for the Wolf Pack less than three minutes later, at 9:50, with his eighth goal of the season. After he misfired on a centering feed from Lettieri, Gettinger got a second chance from the left side of the slot after Nieves dug the puck free, and Gettinger’s quick shot squeaked through the pads of Vladar and just over the goal line. The Wolf Pack are back on home ice Saturday night, battling the Utica Comets in a 7:00 game. That is #MillenialNight at the XL Center, featuring a reusable straw set giveaway to all fans attending the game, presented by ProHealth. Tickets for all 2019-20 Wolf Pack home games are on sale now at the Sunwave Gas & Power Ticket Office at the XL Center, on-line at hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499. The ULTIMATE Queen Prompt Pack
This may differ from normal prompt packs so I’ll explain how this will work. I’ll give the first entry above the Keep Reading line as an example. I’ll put the rest under so I can update as needed and so the post isn’t too long on the dash. They’re also in no particular order.
Entries will include a link to the official Queen music video (if not, then a youtube video with the music), a link to the lyrics on Genius (because the notes give cool insight that might help), and 3-5 lines to use as a quick prompt if you’d like (and will not simply be the title out of redundancy). The lyrics I choose will be based on what would give variety to those who choose to not follow the links rather than anything else. Take note that some songs are harder than others to find isolated lines that can function as a prompt on their own. I’m just doing my best!
Inspiration can be taken from the lyrics, the music, mood of the song, story of the song, music video, Freddy’s costumes, notes from Genius or pretty much anything. Let the inspiration come to you.
If you want, followers can send in specific songs (or lyrics) for you to use as starters for an RP or any other kind of prompt. Or you can just choose a song you want. Up to you.
1. Bohemian Rhapsody

Lyrics
I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy.

Was it all wasted? All that love?

Why can’t we give love?

Just give me what I know is mine.

Restaurant Recommendations
Norima American Deux Plateaux Norima is a quintessential expat hang out that serves up burgers, fries, and fajitas. The friendly English speaking staff is very attentive. Normally for lunch there aren’t many patrons, but come around the dinner rush and you’ll be joined with a ton of international patrons! At night they also have a DJ who plays some music for the restaurant. This place is popular enough that, at the time of writing, they are in the process of expanding! Norima is an easy place to escape when you’ve had enough of the poulet braisé. They also have a fairly extensive drink menu! Price: 5000 – 7000 FCFA without drinks What to get: Anything off the burger menu, wings What to skip: The tacos, salads Bushman Café Ivorian/French Riviéra 3 When you’re going out with your American friends in Abidjan, Bushman Café is the go-to for a fun open-air dinner. Converted from an old hotel, this restaurant has been revamped and decked out with local flare, even selling some of the artwork on display. Enjoy the night time breeze while you wait for your food to be prepared in the exposed kitchen. This place is incredibly accommodating for vegetarians and offers your usual verity of Ivorian classics. Bushman Café takes it up a notch, providing fast (a relative term here) service and expert presentation. Admittedly the beer and wine selection here is slim, but that shouldn’t deter you from enjoying a bottle or two. A favourite among the expat community, you’ll be sure to bump into the international community on a Friday night out! Price: 5000 – 7000 FCFA without drinks What to get: Poisson braise, brochettes Au Bord Du Lac du Tiberade Ivorian Village Abata This is where the locals come to sit lagoon side and enjoy the breeze over a classic meal. Private bungalows sit right on top of the water furnished with tables, chairs, and couches. Though this place is about 30 minutes from the centre of Abidjan, it is slowly becoming known amongst the tourists. Hopefully this destination for the true Abidjanais doesn’t lose its charm as it becomes more well-known… and hopefully they keep their prices low! Expect deep bowls of attiéké and aloko to accompany the large plate of chicken or fish you settle on. But be prepared to spend the entire afternoon or evening here. With slow service and made to order food, you will have a while to enjoy a conversation and long meal out on the water. Price: 3000-6000 FCFA What to get: Poulet braise, attiéké, aloko La Pagode Vietnamise Marcory/Zone 4 Recognized by many as one of, if not the, best restaurant in Abidjan, La Pagode offers amazing food with exceptional service. A relatively large space and plenty of tables are filled on weekend nights. This is a fantastic place to treat yourself to a nice, upper-scale night out. This place offers a wide variety of Vietnamese and Asian food. The group that I went with had a ritual of starting with the plat royal that comes as a platter of various little appetizers. Then followed up with rice and generous plates of meat. Price: 8000-10000 FCFA What to get: Porc caramel, riz cantonais, boeuf citronelle, poulet au bamboo, plat royal, jus de gingimbre Kool Zone Dessert Marcory/Zone 4 Teleportation truly does exist as this frozen yogurt shop seems to have fallen through a worm hole that connects Hollywood to downtown Abidjan. The owner is a Lebanese, born in Abidjan, then a resident in Los Angeles for 20+ years. After visiting his family in Abidjan after his time in America, he got the idea to bring frozen yogurt, boba (bubble tea), and Thai ice cream to the Côte d’Ivoire. As an American from LA walking into this place, I legitimately thought I had hit my head and was having a hallucination. He’s imported all of his machines, blenders, flavorings, and materials from the US to make it a truly authentic experience. Though admittedly he said it’s been a bit of a challenge to take on a campaign to introduce frozen yogurt to Abidjan, he’s had sure success (even besting a competitor who tried to copy his idea). He’s bringing the newest American dessert trends to Abidjan. We sat on chairs with a fun modern design as we drank green milk tea boba, and cups of red velvet and caramel frozen yogurt. The staff is incredibly attentive and focused, the owner has personally trained his staff members to give American-grade service. I can’t say enough nice things about this guy and this place, it’s a true gem in Marcory. Price: 2000-5000 What to get: Boba (they have every flavor you’d find in a boba bar back in LA), frozen yogurt, and Thai ice-cream. Restaurant Le Paon African Riviéra 4 Welcome to the best restaurant in Abidjan. The combination of a romantic atmosphere, mouthwatering food, and impeccable service. Tucked behind a local car wash, walk over the red carpeted bridge and into an oasis. Outside seating in your own private cabana that can easily seat six that comes with a fan and a TV. Your server will leave you will a calling button so you can get his attention without leaving your seat. The menu is extensive but not overwhelming, offering a wide arrange of meat dishes (chicken, fish, steak, and rabbit) and a multitude of sides. While you wait for your food, which won’t be long, listen to the live music that plays nightly and enjoy the ambiance. The food is by far the best I’ve had in Abidjan. We ordered the poulet au gingimbre, a huge plates of chicken bathed in a creamy ginger sauce that is incredibly tasty. I mixed the sauce in with my side orders of rice, aloco, and green beans because it was so good! Everything was done to perfection, even the aloco which they do in the oven to avoid making it too oily. With that main plate and three sides, my friend and I were truly stuffed. The owner is an incredibly kind French woman from Normandy. She made sure to come around and check on us multiple times to make sure everything was to our liking. We established a bit of a rapport with her and she told us how much she loves Americans (her parents are American and growing up a short car ride from Omaha Beach instilled a great respect for the US). And she loves California! She’s truly a great host and has made the top spot to go to in Abidjan. On Friday and Saturday nights there is a large open barbeque of South African meats that is also very popular. As we were there on a Wednesday night it was more quiet, but that didn’t take away from the experience. Price: 6500 – 10000 What to get: poulet au gingimbre, aloco, rice, green beans, any of the steaks Delhi Darbar Indian Marcory/Zone 4 Get your Indian food fix at this authentic restaurant. Run by an incredibly kind Indian family and frequented by patrons of all backgrounds, Delhi Darbar is the spot in Abidjan for Indian food. The large seating area is matched with a TV screen playing any given Bollywood film. Bollywood music plays softly in the background as the classic smells of turmeric and curry surround you. We opted to get a few dishes and share amongst us. Portions aren’t necessarily large but by the end we had a little left over that we took home. We each ordered a gravy with some rice and naan. It admittedly isn’t the best Indian food I’ve ever had, but it’s incredibly decent and middle of the road, truly hits the spot after having been in a curry drought since my arrival to Abidjan. Price: 5000 – 10000 What to get: garlic naan, biryani, onion kutcha, chicken Chana Dahl, Chana curry, palak paneer, chicken tikka masala Des Gatueax et du pain French Bakery Rivièra 3 This bakery is nicer than the local ones I was going to in Brussels. This bakery is efficient, clean, well-managed, and has the tastiest treats. A favorite amongst the teachers at the international school, designer cakes and fancy whole wheat bread sits aside fancy desserts and piles of all of your favorites. Sit for a while and get a coffee or take it on the road with you. If you’re looking for a bakery this is your spot. Price: 500 – 1000 What to get: Get your pain au chocolat and chausson au pomme with some mille feuille and a coffee to go! Restaurant Seoul Korean Rivièra Golf, near the American Embassy If you’re itching for some Korean BBQ, this is going to be the place that does it’s best to scratch it. Sadly, in 2017 the grill top tables haven’t yet made their way to Abidjan. But delicious kimchi and heaping bowls of Bibimbap sure have! Though it isn’t a large venue, the service is incredibly fast and wait staff is moderately attentive. We had a fantastic meal with large portions, perfect fopr sharing amongst the group if you wish! Note: If you have a peanut allergy like a certain American, then be sure to triple check. Some items on the menu that don’t list that they have peanuts still come with peanuts. So bring up your allergy with the waiter before you order! Price: 4000-9000 What to get: Tteok bok gi, Calamars frits, Dak gangjeong (surprise nuts), Bulgogi, Dak galbi What to skip: Chicken teriyaki Garden Lounge European, African Attoban A quite night out at an upscale restaurant that isn’t pretentious? Garden lounge is one of the top restaurants in Abidjan but also easily the most popular. Cab drivers will know exactly where to go just by mentioning the name. Sit back, relax, and draw the curtains in your own private gazeebo that is furnished with plush chairs and sofas. The food is incredibly tasty and can be enjoyed slowly over a nice conversation. Service is on the slower side, but what are you going to do? Enjoy the music and privacy as you sip on some Flag, Castel, or any of the tens of different drink options this place offers (the bar is very extensive). Price: 6000-8000 What to get: Steak, Sole de Garden Quick Burger American Rivièra 3 If you find yourself at Rivièra 3 by The International Community School of Abidjan and you need a far cry of a burger, or some food to pad your stomach before a night out, Quick Burger will be just that. Although the adjective in its name is the king of misnomers, when your food comes out it will be incredibly middle of the road. Ask for the garlic sauce (a mayo aioli, sort of), that helps add flavor. No frills, no promises made nor kept, Quick Burger is what you want out of a cheap Abidjan burger joint. Price: 3000-4000 What to get: Burgers, fries, and beer

the reason you joined tumblr: I wanted to start a blog (about college stuff? Don’t even remember) and had heard people talking about tumblr.
do you ever get ‘good morning’ or ‘good night’ texts?: Not really. Every once in a while, or if I’ve been texting with someone recently.
when did you last hold hands: Ugh, my dad likes to take my hand while he’s driving
how long does it take you to get ready in the morning?: 12-15 minutes. I want to wring out every possible second of sleep, so I’ve learned to keep it minimal.
have you shaved your legs in the past three days?: Last night. I have that fun fun Eastern European hirsuiteness, so I barely go more than two days without shaving. I have a schedule. It’s a thing.
where are you right now?: At my desk at work.
do you like music loud or at a reasonable level?: I think it’s reasonable, but I know that I have kind of off hearing, so it might be louder than I realize
3 things you love: Lotion, pajamas, hot showers
how you feel right now: Calm
something you really really want: Naptime at work
3 things that upset you: The state of the world, having to get up early, my favourite characters dying
what do you find attractive in other people?: Slight nerdiness, kindness, sense of humor, non-elitism, intelligence
3 habits you have: High-pitched whining, wearing only one earbud, highlighting as I read online
something you fantasize about: Having a job I’m more satisfied with, living with friends, finding a relationship

are you in school?: I finished and it’s weird never going back
do you get grossed out easily?: Depends with what.
somewhere you would like to visit for a week: Israel
I’ll love you if …: you meet the arbitrary standards I’m feeling that day
last show you binge-watched?: It was a rewatch, but Arrested Development season 4. I have GBBO and MBMBAM planned next
what words upset you the most: I get upset by slurs or derogatory language, but usually it’s more of a tone than a word that angers me
what words make you feel the best about yourself: ones that compliment my character and make me feel really appreciated
a wish that you’ve wished for repeatedly on 11:11: I don’t think I’ve ever really done 11:11 wishes
who would you switch lives with for a day?: I don’t know that I would. If I maintained my own consciousness in the body of another person I admire, I think I would just be intimidated by the things they’re able/required to do and that would make me anxious. If I was a passenger as they controlled things, I’d just be jealous of how put together they are when I got back to my own body

last awkward situation you found yourself in: Couldn’t hear what a coworker said but I was in a rush, so I just said, “haha, you too!” and speedwalked out of there

I was tagged to do this Q&A thing by Caneton (idk why but it won’t let me @ you).
1: Are you named after someone? No, but at least one of the names my parents considered was after an ancestor. I think it was Kurt?
2: When was the last time you cried? Oh boy it was at least six weeks ago. After working for several months with my cousin cleaning pools together, I was eventually promoted to driving my own van. One day I was cleaning a pool alone and I just got this random nostalgic feeling about the conversations my cousin and I would have on the job and I missed him and teared up a bit it was dumb
3: Do you like your handwriting? I’ve described my method of writing as “broken-handed” since I write nearly all of my letters from bottom-to-top instead of top-to-bottom. If I rush writing it’s really bad, but if I take my time it’s neat enough.
4: What is your favorite lunch meat? Black forest ham.
5: Do you have kids? No.
6: If you were another person, would you be friends with you? Yeah, but I’d imagine being just as annoyed with myself as I already am on frequent occasion.
7: Do you use sarcasm? I used to be really sarcastic in middle school, but it backfired because I would be too deadpan in my delivery. This created problems since people didn’t know whether or not to take me seriously, even when I wanted to be. So I decided to stop.
8: Do you still have your tonsils? Yeah. The only surgeries I’ve had were to remove my wisdom teeth (I only had three) and to remove a toothpick from my foot (kicked my sister in the face while fighting over a piece of chocolate we found in our mom’s purse).
9: Would you bungee jump? Bungee jumping is too sketchy since they never really know the right length of cord to use. I would skydive if given the chance.
10: What is your favorite kind of cereal? In general I enjoy bland cereals like Rice Crispies or Chex/Crispix. Other than that, I really like the S’mores cereal and Count Chocula. I don’t get cereal often because combined with buying milk, it’s a big commitment for me to eat it all before either one goes bad.
11: Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Whenever I get a new pair of shoes I try to make it a habit to take them off by untying them, but I eventually just start kicking them off after a while.
12: Do you think you’re a strong person? I think the only reason I’ve never been “jumped” in middle or high school was because I was like a foot taller than everyone else. Physically strong, yeah sure. Mentally and spiritually strong depends on my level of spite towards the opposing force.
13: What is your favourite ice cream? Ever, ever? I’m a boring chocolate custard guy.
14: What is the first thing you notice about people? Hair. It’s a point of ridicule amongst my friends and I that I somewhat melt in the presence of a cute girl with a pixie cut.
15: What is the least favorite physical thing you like about yourself? Cosmetically, I would like to be more toned. Practically, I wish my eyes didn’t have a degenerative disorder in the form of keratoconus.
16: What color pants and shoes are you wearing now? I’m wearing a blue and white checkered pair of shorts I usually wear for work. No shoes currently.
17: What are you listening to right now? Silence, but I have the Star Trek Voyager theme stuck in my head even though I haven’t even watched the series yet.
18: If you were a crayon, what color would you be? I was obsessed with gold and treasure when I was like five so Golden Rod used to be my favorite. Now would probably just be green.
19: Favorite smell? Apple cinnamon, fresh baguettes, old books
20: Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? My cousin. I was asking him if he had noticed a customer’s pool pump was dead last week and he said no.
21: Favorite sport to watch? Baseball and football
22: Hair color? Brown
23: Eye color? Brown
24: Do you wear contacts? The nature of my current job always has chemicals and water splashing into my face, so I only wear them on the weekends. I wear a soft one in my right eye and a hard one in my left since it’s the one most affected by keratoconus.
25: Favorite food to eat? I can eat a slice of pizza from Mellow Mushroom any time, any day of the week. Cheese burgers, crab legs, fried shrimp, boneless honey bbq wings. There’s a Chinese restaurant less than two miles from my home that has my all-time favorite General Tso.
26: Scary movies or comedy? Scary movies ARE comedy.
27: Last movie you watched? Last movie I watched completely was Hidden Figures about a month ago. More recently, I tried to watch the Ralph Bakshi animated Lord of the Rings and was bored after 90 minutes.
28: What color of shirt are you wearing? A navy blue blood donation shirt I use for work, stained and bleached from chlorine.
29: Summer or winter? Winter has better options for fashion, and I like being warm and bundled up against the cold. However, having to work outside in winter has made me dislike it as of late.
30: Hugs or kisses? I enjoy kissing more if it’s someone I’m intimate with.
31: What book are you currently reading? pffffffffft I’ve technically started like four different books, one of which I’ve already read before. The one I’ve made the most progress in is I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison. I most recently completed Squirrel Girl Beats Up the Marvel Universe, if that counts.
33: What is on your mouse pad? This is 2017. I have an optical mouse.
34: What is the last TV program you watched? I’m watching through Star Trek: The Next Generation on Netflix. Discounting that, it was The Grand Tour.
35: What is the best sound? Thunderstorms, specifically sporadic rain splashing against the window of my room back home in Florida.
36: Rolling stones or The Beatles? My love for The Beatles is the most honkey thing about me.
37: What is the furthest you have ever travelled? I’ve been to Belize on a cruise when I was about 14 or 15, so that’s the furthest out of country. In-country was to Connecticut.
38: Do you have a special talent? I can fold a dollar bill into a ring!
39: Where were you born? Florida
I tag everyone idk DO IT

“Dope A-F” - 8/20 - 8/21 - “Winstmas Games Changes Format”
I only had one set the last couple of days. So nothing too crazy to catch up on. So let’s get caught up on all this #cutecomedy fun laydees and baybees!
8/20
There was no open mic in town. So basically I just edited video and wrote. It was nice. I need to get some more content up. I am trying to make myself work my ass off. I want to put out a good product, so if someone digs me they have a ton of stuff they can check out.
I went to ortho on call because I’ve been having a lot of hand pain since Asheville. They think it is carpal tunnel related so they gave me some steroids and a wrist brace. I feel like I look like an idiot in the brace, but I do love not feeling the numbness and pain so much.
After this I had a relaxing night and got some wings, and cheese fries. All in all it was a super chill night that I needed. I also got a lot of sleep. It wasn’t the best sleep. I’ve been tossing and turning, and waking up tired lately.
8/21
Today was another busy day. After work I got to edit some more video. I have started to try and do subtitles. Which are difficult and time consuming, but they are going to make a huge difference on youtube I think.
I then headed to Home Sweet Home to record a new episode of The Winstmas Games. I changed it up a little bit. I gave them the games ahead of time this week. This way they can kind of prep. Which will help the show in a few reasons. It should mean people should have jokes for everything, and they can riff it anyway if they want. It’ll be less dead airspace on the show as well. Most importantly the show is funnier when people are laughing at each other. Unfortunately I think people don’t laugh at each other because they were too busy thinking of what jokes they were going to do. So this will keep people from stressing.
The show had Paige Campbell and Will Minor vs Alex Castagne and Jason Kusterer. We all met upstairs at HSH and got the show started. I have to admit it turned out amazingly well. The flow was good, and the jokes made me laugh. It ended up being like 35 minutes and I actually tried some different games. It was dope. So going to go forward with this format from now on.
I signed up for the mic after that. We all went outside to hang. I had a few new things I wanted to try. A couple jokes that needed new tags, and one that was almost done.
We got a good hang going on outside even though it was like 95 degrees. Mike Engle, Mu Cuzzo, Adam Chiodini, Jack Parker, Bryan Williams Taylor Baldwin, Jack Gerow, and plenty of others showed up.
Kusterer did a comics meeting, and I found out I was second after Carlton Kotalo. We hung for like another 15 minutes and he got the show started.
He went up and did a good job settling the room in. As his set went on more people showed up and we actually had about 8 or 9 noncomics there which is a nice crowd. Then he brought up Carlton who got some laughs with some stuff I don’t remember. He talked about his ex wife and that did well. He also talked about him and Mu seeing a dude having a seizure and breaking his AirPods.
I went up and joked about no wonder his wife left the kind of guy who just watches someone have a seizure and die. I then riffed about how bad comics are as people. I then did my newer stuff. Honestly I did well for the first half, but the newer stuff I rushed through and I wasn’t pleased with it at all. Definitely productive, but this was the definition of a mediocre set. I had fun, but didn’t kill. I’d give it a C-.
After my set I grabbed my things and said my goodbyes. On my way out Jesse Jarvis walked in and I got to talk to him for a bit. It was a good way to end the night. I hopped in my car and headed home to hang with mom before passing out.
That’s it everybody for today. I have some fun shows coming up so make sure you check out winstonhodges.com for the dates of the HaHa Hyrdra comedy tour, and I am super stoked on getting some t-shirts made. It’s a great time to be following me. Make sure you check me out on everything @winstonhcomedy ! xoxo I love you and will be back with you Sunday!
