Two weeks went by before Oswald saw Ed again. He came to visit him. A horrible disguise and an even more horrible British accent but it brought a laugh out of Oswald.

Ed turned his head to the side at the statement, eyebrows pinching and mouth thinning.

Oswald leaned forward, watching every jolt and micro-expression. This was far more satisfying than knowledge,” it eats you up doesn’t it? If you can trust me or not. What the rich kid’s textbook was about. Curiosity is… torture.” 

“ I’ll find out what the textbook was about, and I’ll grow to understand you.”

Then, when Oswald thought Ed would tell him how betrayed him, Ed said something else, “I changed, Oswald. Unfurled. Reborn. Stronger. More aware of my potential. I can no longer be your shadow. “ 

“ I understand,” Oswald nodded, “ but your methods they’re… chaotic… reckless and flashy.” 

“ They don’t align with yours.” 

Oswald took a deep breath, “ you must know, if I had to, I’d tear you apart and build my empire on your ruins.” 

Ed, the sick bastard, smiled, “ and if you had to, I’d claw my way out of the soil and rip everything apart.” 

It was alarming, but… pleasant to know there was someone Oswald can be honest with. Someone that can be honest with him.

He had to ask, “ and where does that leave us?”

Edward thought for a minute before he said,” sometimes allies, sometimes foes. More than friends. We hold love for each other, but we’re not lovers. That word confines us. So what are we?” 

“ Is this a poem?”

“ It’s a riddle. I was hoping you’d have an answer to that.” 

Oswald pondered on it for a moment before he said,” partners, in a way.” 

“ In a way.” 

The next day, Oswald found an old tattered science textbook under his pillow, and the week after, Ed told him about his betrayals. Three days later, Ed snuck him out for a night on a ferry where they exchanged their first true kiss.
