Chapter 2

Pato leaves his pendant, the one on a chain around his neck that Alex had become accustomed to looping his finger around and pulling when Pato made a game out of their hookups.

Alex, when he manages to crawl out of the isolation of the closet, finds it left atop the nightstand. The silver of it stands out in stark contrast from the dark wood, like an accusation, catches Alex’s eye when he surveys the room for shrapnel left behind by Pato’s departure. Alex isn’t dumb enough to miss the statement of it. Pato used to shower with it on, sleep in it, only removing it when he was behind the wheel of his car and was obligated by the rulebook to take it off. There is no accident in the way it’s placed atop his nightstand, no subtlety in the brutality of it.

Alex does not touch it, worried he will tarnish the silver with hands that have marred so much already. Instead, he watches as it collects dust over the next three weeks, stares at the design of the pendant until it is engraved in his mind. He’d never asked Pato what it meant. Assumption had led him to believe it was tied to his family, his home – his real home, in Monterrey, not the apartment in Indiana that had been more of a weigh station. Now that he didn’t have the man to ask, it plagued him.

November 21st

Dear diary,

The day has been a long one. I miss flowers and have begun to fold paper in imitation. I spoke to Sir John earlier in the day, he had said something along the lines of “there comes a time in every captains life where he tires of his own voice.” And I laughed out loud. On accident, truly, for is to give orders not the reason a man becomes a captain?

Everything I’ve eaten today has made me horribly thirsty. I’m so incredibly tired of sodium. Any more of this and I myself am going to become a preserved shriveled salted meat. Enough.

I’ve begun reading Dracula. Not too far into it yet, but there’s nothing like distracting myself from everything dark and scary by reading about even more dark and scary things. I believe I’d made a great vampire.

My lieutenant has spoken about marriage and I got scared. But if I were to get married I think I’d make Dr Stanley the officiant. It might be his first wedding invitation. (Even writing this is making my heart beat a bit irregularly. I’m nauseous. Help)
