Years ago, I went to an elementary school that was legit run by a museum. Like, they would display collections at our school when it wasn't on display at the museum and we learned a lot of weird and random things through hands-on projects. The one that always gets a big reaction is our 1st grade science project had us mummify a duck.

Anyway, one of the things we learned to do was very basic bookbinding, but it was taught to us sort of as a historical, people don't bind books like this anymore, type of thing. I stumbled upon some dead blogs last year showing finished, bound fics and I was so excited to learn that, no, this is still A Thing That People Do

Now, I've been pointed to you as someone active in the craft and your work is lovely. I particularly loved your binding of A Complete Kingdom by absolute legend Komodobits. It was so clean and the colors were lovely and your lighthouse motif was spot-on.

I want to learn bookbinding, too, but I'm not sure where to start. Any advice? How did you get started? What tools or materials do you wish you'd invested more in sooner? What did you wish you'd known before you got started? I would appreciate your insight and perspective.

I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my ability, even though I still see myself as a beginner (I started in july 2022).

I started by stumbling upon this video. It served as an introduction to some basic bookbinding steps and gestures, and the stitch shown here to sew the spine is still the one I use to this day. It will only show you how to repurpose an existing cover to bind a fic in, however.

Wanting to make the whole book myself, I looked for another way to learn and found this book. And it's so good that I haven't needed to find another source of information since then. At the time I bought it, it was easy to find and not to expensive in my country, but I don't know what its situation is today where you are.

I know others learned through youtube tutorials like Sea Lemon's or DAS bookbinding's, but I didn't go that way, so I don't have recommendations.

What I can recommend is checking out ArmoredSuperHeavy's blog (their pinned post contains a link to the free bookbinding manual they made, which seems to contain the same things I learned from my book). They created the Renegade Bindery discord server. It's a wealth of knowledge and a very welcoming place (I tried it but left because I'm not good at navigating big servers, but that's just me). That's the beating heart of the bookbinding community, in my opinion.

You can get started with very rough tools, if you're not sure you want to invest right away. There are perfectly decent bookbinding kits online that will generally contain a plastic bone folder, an awl, needles and thread, and that's enough to get started. A simple cotton or linen thread waxed by pulling across a candle works great. I bought pieces of pleather made for home decor to start with, and I'm glad I did because you're always gonna make mistakes when you start, and ruining good fabric feels terrible. But now fabric is the thing I invest in the most. I buy my bookbinding cloth from Schmedt (warning: it's expensive, and may not be the most practical for you depending on where you are in the world) and I'm slowly gathering a collection of varied colors.

If you buy good tools and good fabric from the start, don't be disappointed when your first creations don't look as good as the ones you see on tumblr. You'll have to learn and get good in order to use your tools and materials to their full potential.

The great thing about bookbinding is that you learn at least one new thing every book.

I'm thinking about your questions. There's not really something I wish I'd known before I started, I think I elvolved in the most organic way as a bookbinder. As dumb as it sounds, my best advice is: try stuff, and make plenty of mistakes. Mistakes are the most efficient and fastest teachers.

Don't waste money on a small shitty guillotine if you think you're gonna buy a real one in the future (my ream cutter cost 100€, it's very good, I needn't have bothered with a 50€ one before), you're under no obligation to trim your books.

You're under no obligation to buy a Cricut to make your books look like those you see on tumblr, with vinyll titles.

Announcement for Book 7's update on the EN server coming this Friday

Friday night at 2AM Pacific Standard Time, there will be free handouts of copium and tissues upon the release of Book 7's latest translated update for the English Server of Twisted Wonderland.

To the brethren in the Japanese server that's played through this horror show of an update, I was warned beforehand that you should ration said copium and keep an extra box of tissues because I heard quote,

"It gets sad as hell and it gets worse from here."

I was also told that we're more than welcome to come cry on the shoulders of fellow comrades as we see fit but at least we get to see the beautiful and badass MILF to end all MILFs Maleanor in this chapter as well.

stopping by to say that i finished my fmab rewatch tonight after not seeing any fma in a while and i gotta tell ya that my 30 year old self sobbed and i almost went to bed sobbing bc i am so full of Emotion....

but i came here instead for some quick giggles and to say that even though a lot of life has happened since i first discovered fma when i was 15, here i still am, loving it, enjoying it, and seeing it through a new perspective. I was also reminded of just how much i held on to fma as a sortof life vest to just keep me afloat whenever things felt overwhelming or when i needed an extra push to simply step out of my comfort zone.

I told my buddy a couple years ago that fma is essentially a part of me bc of all that, and while i don't rely on it as much as i used to, i like to believe that i carry it with me everywhere i go. I might not scream it from the rooftops anymore, but i love fullmetal alchemist so damn much that it's hard to articulate it, and i hope i continue love it for a long long time.

So I finally got around to doing the Fontaine Archon quests. My friends looked at me weirdly when I literally (excitedly) shrieked when Legacy showed up.

Anyway, I wanna affectionately bite him. But my affectionate bites are very.. rough? I put a lot of force into them and thus hurt people. So I don't affectionately bite anymore.

But I wanna. Which made me wonder how affection-biting different aspects of Legacy would feel. Like, yeah the armor will be hard, but there's (probably??) areas not covered in armor. Also wondering if neck/shoulder floof feels different from head floof.

ALSO, wondering if the cape is physical. Because it looks like space. And I love space. hhhhhhhhhhh <3

alright so *claps hands* Foul Legacy is mostly covered in armor, buuuuut the area around his neck near his fluff is softer- it feels like the underside of a snake, if you've ever felt one! that's why under his chin is one of the best places to scritch, apart from behind his horns. his neck is the main area that feels different, since almost everywhere else is covered in armor; when he purrs, you can feel the vibrations in his throat more than his chest, and if you want to monch him and leave teeth marks, his neck is your best bet (it also makes him shriek and let out deep, rumbling laughs because he's also quite ticklish around there). BUT if you want to give him very hard chomps, that's actually completely alright, as long as you do it on his armor instead! you'll need to be careful and make sure you don't damage your own teeth, but other than that you can bite to your heart's delight, and Legacy will give you a few much gentler nibbles of his own

his fluff does feel different from his hair, the fluff feels considerably softer and lighter, almost like a poofy lilac cloud. it becomes even softer and fluffier when he's particularly pleased or trying to impress you, ruffling up his fur and purring happily when you comb it back down with your fingers- but it's at its absolute fluffiest when he gets startled by something, the fur poofing up into a purple cotton ball, and his hair bristles a bit when he's frightened, too. also, the upper part of his cape is physical! it's smooth and cool and feels like fine silk, even when it shifts into a pair of wings. the tips are intangible, dissolving into nothingness and starlight, but occasionally you can feel light pecks on your skin like raindrops, almost as if the stars themselves are landing and shattering on your hands. you can pet his cape-like wings too, as long as you're gentle, and soon you'll have a drowsy, rumbly Abyss monster curled up in your lap <3

What exactly is you job because I want it so bad?

It changes with the seasons, but right now I'm a chainsaw crew lead in Oregon! We're a full-time camping crew, roving through different FS districts in the state. My term will end in a few weeks & then I'll be back in the ocean. If you're interested in doing the kind of work I've been describing, I'd recommend looking into conservation corps programs in the region of your choice, with a focus on saw crews!
