Idol Precure Series: A Gratuitous Costume Parade

Because that is literally what this is. An excuse to dress everyone up in cute clothes.

Not complaining, though. The girls look fabulous~

Anyways, y’all aware they were grouped together because of what their civilian identities have in common, right?

Well, that’s how I see it so I typed this up so I can use it for reference later.

Initially, it was just a companion (?) piece to this StarPre prediction post (therefore, the StarPre girls haven’t been included yet so go check out that post until they are) but now I’ll come back to edit/update it again when more new stuff is released or I find better quality pictures.

I also have some ideas for possible new groups if they ever add or mix-and-switch the current ones but that’ll be on another post altogether to avoid confusing myself, ahaha~

Anata no kokoro o mitoshi-tai (Team “I see through your heart”)

Members: Yukishiro Honoka, Hanasaki Tsubomi, Tsukikage Yuri, Shirabe Ako, Yakushiji Saaya

At a glance, it seems like they put all the smart ones together but it’s really because these girls all wear glasses.

Yep, the meganekko group.

I mean, they are smart but the key point here is clearly the glasses. Which is a tad bit of a shame because I feel like that (moe aspect) takes away from recognizing them for their intelligence first.

On another note, interestingly enough, I believe there’s a play on words with their unit name. If you say it out loud without knowing the context, it really sounds like “I want to look into your heart”. Can someone confirm this? My amateur Japanese isn’t enough to explain it eloquently.

Bunbu Ranbu (”Martial Dance”)

Members: Myoudouin Itsuki, Aoki Reika, Yotsuba Alice, Hikawa Iona

Martial arts practitioners.

Also, I’m pretty sure Reika knows some kendo along with kyūdō since we’ve seen her wielding a giant ice sword as Cure Beauty multiple times throughout the franchise. We just didn’t see her do it in civilian form. Hmm. :/

Eternal Moment

Former villainesses who turned good and became a main heroine.

I’m so glad they didn’t forget about their evil alter-egos cuz Eas and Twilight (or perhaps just Twilight) can be considered separate characters in their own rights so it’s nice to see them show up in advertisement again every once in a while.

Hmmm, their name though... it looks like this unit might only be intended for two people (”Eternal” for Towa and “Moment” for “Setsuna”).

That is, unless they add onto it like HNMH (see below) if they plan to include more girls into this category. If so, then...

Girls with strong affiliation to music...I think?

We saw Karen playing the violin in Yes!5 Precure’s OP and her parents are famous musicians themselves (just like Hibiki’s) but I can’t recall if she ever played any instrument during any particular episode in Yes! 5 or Gogo(?). Anyways...

Mystic Diva contains those who are renowned singers from another world (I don’t think Ellen sang much after she sorta permanently remained in human form but as Siren, she was one of the top contenders next to Hummy to sing the Melody of Happiness so there’s that).

Haresora Concerto obviously are for those who practice classical instruments.

Finally, the collaboration...is it a collaboration or did they really merge the two units together? If not, then Aoi will still need to be assigned to a group and if we’re going by the above criteria, she doesn’t fit into either one (Mystic Diva isn’t really her style anyway and she’s long given up the violin to play the guitar).

Maybe they’ll come up with another unit specifically focused on the rock genre in the future cuz we have Emiru and Lulu now so that’ll be enough to start one.

Granted, Lulu didn’t sing before she arrived in present day Hugtto but she did say she’s going to bring music back to the future so...why not count that and the future as “another world”, hmm?

I don’t really associate Minami with music even though she is skilled at playing the violin. It’s just that compared to Towa and Haruka where the violin played a significant part in their story arcs, Minami and the violin is more secondary (pfft, not even) to her connection with the sea. But then again...Karen is in this group so I dunno :S

Did I forget anyone else who plays a classical instrument? I feel like I’m missing someone...

Haruka Nozomu Mirai no Hana (”Wishing for the Flower of the Far Off Future”)

Members: Yumehara Nozomi, Haruno Haruka, Asahina Mirai, Nono Hana

The dream chasers.

And by far, the unit I find the most aesthetically pleasing. ^^

Also, I feel like some people would try to argue that Mirai “didn’t have a goal and therefore, she doesn’t belong in this group” so as she is my beloved daughter, I need to make them eat the dirt of their WRONGNESS.

Because MahoPre’s epilogue obviously showed her trying to find a way to reunite with Riko and Ha-chan, aka bring their two worlds together again, so that definitely counts as her dream (not to mention, the most ambitious one out of everybody else’s in this group). Furthermore, if you actually watched MahoPre more closely, you would know her dream of the two worlds coming together came to her gradually rather than happening at a particular moment and was solidified after she had to separate from her team after the Big Boss fight in the finale.

And you know what? Her wish was fulfilled in the end so y’all can suck it. :P

Home Maid

Cooking or maybe, more accurately, sweets enthusiasts? *makes side eye at Aguri*

Well, besides that, they also either helped out at a restaurant or provided a service that had something to do with food (tea ceremony in Aguri’s case).

Hence, the “maid” part, I guess...

...but if so, then this is a poster for a maid cafe, not an idol unit! :P

Others who can fit into this group: Hyuuga Saki (family runs a bakery) [?], Akimoto Komachi (family runs a Japanese confectionery shop) [?], Hino Akane (family runs an okonomiyaki restaurant) [?], Haruno Haruka (family runs a Japanese confectionery restaurant) [?], Kotozume Yukari (learned from her grandmother how to perform tea ceremonies) [?], Kirahoshi Ciel (owns her own sweets restaurant), Nono Hana (grandparents ran a Japanese confectionery shop)

With the exception of Ciel, a lot of “?” cases here because similar to the Karen/Minami in Haresora Concerto, their main interests don’t particularly lie in cuisine and most of them never stated any intention of carrying on their family business. So it’s really up to whether you want them in this unit or not. Personally, I think Home Maid has enough members already so...

Oh and Hana was crossed off the list since she became the president of her own company at the end of Hugtto.

Yes, while Homare does participate in a sport, singles figure skating is mostly an individual event so the MVP title can’t really be applied to her. I guess that was the reasoning behind why she wasn’t placed in this group even though that’s what she’s most known for.

Osha-Revolution

Members: Kurumi Erika, Shirayuki Hime, Kagayaki Homare

The fashionistas!

This is my most favorite idol unit name out of all the others not only because it sounds like the most cleverly thought out but also because just hearing the word “revolution” gets the legendary Utena Revolution OP playing in my head again. *jams to the beat*

Thankfully, it’s got no connection to this idol series cuz *GAAASP*......*whispers* no.

Anyways, I’m glad it’s universally agreed upon that Erika and Hime would get along like five runways crisscrossing simultaneously at Fashion Week. Adding Homare to this lineup is appropriate because she’s always being complimented for dressing so stylishly.

Also, having someone as tall as her stand in between Erika and Hime like a giraffe hanging between two Hyacinth Macaws, lol is really...picture perfect.

Secret Lives

Members: Mimino Kurumi, Hanami Kotoha, Kirahoshi Ciel

Mascots who can transform and became one of the main heroines in their respective seasons.

I like their aesthetic, too. Even though they give off cute vibes as much as any of the other idol groups, there’s still a “mystery” air about them.

Ermmm...Ellen was a mascot but she wasn’t aligned with the good side in the beginning. And after she became a Cure, she didn’t revert back to cat form again... *shrug*

Soushi⇄Souai (”Mutual Love with Creativity”)

Members: Mishou Mai, Akimoto Komachi, Hoshizora Miyuki, Kise Yayoi

Those whose strongest weapon is the pen (or brush) in their hand. Or something like that? I was trying to go for something more artful but I guess not. :P

This group’s name gave me a little trouble in translating but I think what I settled for in the end gets the idea across well enough. They love creating so much that they’ll be rewarded in kind with lots of inspiration.

...which sounds a bit unfair for everyone else suffering creative blocks but okay.

Triple Heart

Members: Momozono Love, Aida Mana, Aino Megumi

The love-obsessed.

The Ladies.

At least that’s what I like to think them as. “Up to Me” gives off the impression of a very decisive person. Along with how mature they act, these girls fit that description to their own special degrees.

Like, Miki is very focused on her modeling career and confident she’ll go far, Riko has good work ethic and always aims for her goals and Yukari is, well, good at almost everything and is also a very “my pace” kind of woman.

...they all have purple hair, too, so I’m wondering if that’s another prerequisite for being added to this unit.

Others who can fit into this group: Tsukikage Yuri, Kenzaki Makoto (?)

Yuri would fit in no problem but Makoto I’m still teetering back and forth on...

Urara*Kirara

Members: Kasugano Urara, Amanogawa Kirara

Girls who aspire for the stage (acting and signing for Urara and modeling for Kirara) and have “-rara” in their names.

If that’s the case here, guess this is another unit meant for anyone who fits those limited criteria. Otherwise...

White Coat Angels

Members: Yamabuki Inori, Hishikawa Rikka, Kaidou Minami, Kenjou Akira

Those with a future in medicine.

But Minami...hmm, well, though it was never clearly stated what her profession was (I don’t think?) when she grew up, she could’ve gone on to become a wildlife veterinarian after she achieved her degree in marine biology so yea, she counts.

Twin Love

Pretty damn sure the first one was made specially just for KiraPre. No other girls sport blatant animal imagery on them. Plus, there’s no point in including anymore members than how many this group already has.

As for Twin Love, it’s a canon idol pair unit in Hugtto. Adding anyone else in it would not make it “Twin” Love anymore.

So that leaves the question of where Emiru and Lulu will go in the next series, I guess. Though I’m sure they’ll stick together wherever they’re assigned.

Side B

Royal Road

Members: Kokoda Koji (Coco), Natts, Ouji Masamune, Prince Kanata

Fairy Five

Members: Amai Shiro (Syrup), Pop, Raquel, Lance, Aroma

Did anyone else think that “Side B” also stood for “Side Boys” before Dark Party was released? (And yes, I know what a B-side track is so you don’t have to tell me)

Anyways, Royal Road is obviously for the prince characters (though I don’t think they really needed to add Ouji-senpai since he’s just a minor recurring character, not supporting but whatever) and Fairy Five is for the younger male mascots who can transform.

Others who can fit into Royal Road: Prince Zeke, Wakamiya Henri, Aisaki Masato (?)

If Dark Dream can join an idol unit despite being a movie-only character, then I don’t see why they can’t integrate Prince Zeke into this unit as well. All that matters is how popular or memorable he was in HaCha’s movie because everyone who was picked out for Side B had to have had an impact on the audience one way or another. But at least Zeke makes more sense than Ouji-senpai.

Henri needs no explanation as he is the “Prince of the Ice” but if you want a prince to accompany his occasional “princess” role, including Masato wouldn’t be a bad idea. Though I still think Masato’s more of a knight than a prince.

Others who can fit into Fairy Five: Kuroro (?)

Granted, Kuroro only got a human form by combining powers with Lock in the final battle of Go!Pri and hasn’t technically earned it yet since he only begun fairy training when the season ended...but if he can, why not?

The Enemy Boys

Members: Irisawa Kiriya, Luntarou (Wolfrun), Kurosu (Close), Rio (Julio/Pikario)

Off-White

Members: Soular, Westar, Phantom, Shut

“The Enemy Boys” ...more like “School Infiltrators” since they were the few among villains to pose as students in order to get closer to the Cures.

Off-White consists of bishounen villains who eventually came around to understanding and siding with the good side. Which explains the “off white” part, I guess, since it wasn’t an immediate reform for them but a more gradual one that needed a lot of persuasion and thinking.

Precure Legendary Heroes

Members: Cure Fire (Ban Kenji), Cure Sebastian (Sebastian)

Dark Party

Members: Dark Dream, Dark Precure, Regina, Bibury Vibry

Legendary Heroes is clearly a parody of the Precure franchise itself but since we already grew out of those jokes thanks to Hugtto, I’m hoping I won’t see any updates for this group ever again. And I will be absolutely livid if they dare to put Cure Infini in this unit because that is not funny.

Dark Party needs no extensive explanation as they were former nemesis/rivals to the Cures who never really got a “good” form even after their Heel-Face Turn (Dark Precure didn’t even get one of these). Which is fine because that’s essentially their charm. What makes dark magical girls so appealing is how awesome they are even when they’re “evil”.

Also gotta love the gothic lolita clothes that a number of them usually wear. If they didn’t keep Side B separate from Side A, I totally would’ve liked to put Eas and Twilight in this group as well.

First of all, Kpop is not just simply pop music, as the name suggests. Within the genre kpop are actually many different genres of music mingled and there’s something nice for (almost) everyone to find. I’ll give you some information about my favourite groups that might help you find what you could like. I will also link mostly title songs as they are the more popular songs and usually have a music video (kpop music videos are always very aesthetic btw).

Starting off with my ultimate favourite group Stray Kids. They are still rookies as they debuted in March 2018 but I’ve fallen in love with them and their music so much that I highly recommend you checking them out. They are a 9 member boy group with three of those members, Bang Chan, Changbin and Han (knowns as 3RACHA) writing and composing all of their songs. 3RACHA has been releasing pre-debut mixtapes on Souncloud throughout 2017 and if you like hip hop/rap music, you should definitely give them a listen. The three leaders also created a SVT Leaders unit for their song Change Up. They mainly release ot13 songs with one of their members, called Woozi, being the main composer but they also released songs in their respective units. Some recs are:

Ohohohohohohoho I’m glad you both asked about Kirishima’s pack cause boy do I have answers - okay first things first, Kirishima is only dating Bakugou and he’s the only wolf shifter in the pack (well, Mina is also a shifter, just not a wolf shifter)

In the AU pack dynamics are loosely based on how wolf packs work in the wild: in nature usually there’s an alpha couple (the “alpha male” and his mate) and the rest of the pack is made out of their pups! So by all means it’s just a family unit - once the pups are old enough to fend for themselves they leave the “pack” to form their own family - they’re social animals, so they need a pack to be happy and safe, and that reflects in the AU too. In this universe though it’s pretty normal for wolf shifters to date/marry non-shifters or shifters of other kinds, and when that happens the resulting kids might or might not have shifting abilities, which results in the process of forming a pack being a bit all over the place

In Kirishima’s case, he was born by two non-shifters who had shifter blood in them - as a wolf shifter his wolf side needed a pack to feel well (let’s say, other wolves to play with and learn from and so on) so as a kid he used to spend a lot of time with Fat and Amajiki (both wolf shifters!) who acted as a surrogate pack for the wolf in him - now he’s old enough to have his own pack tho! And while ideally that would mean he builds his own family with another wolf shifter, he ended up falling for Bakugou, who’s a non-shifter and a man, which means the family plan sorta went down the drain. His wolf still needs a pack to be happy tho, and that ended up meaning he latched onto Mina (a childhood friend) and Kaminari and Sero (Bakugou’s close friends) who by this point are as close to him as if they were actual family.

So in theory Kirishima’s wolf side sees the pack as himself and Bakugou as the alpha couple and Mina, Sero and Kaminari as the “pups” - practically though Kirishima’s human side has a perfect grasp on his wolf’s instincts, so all in all it ends up just being five pals loving each other like family, no power imbalance at all (…he does get clingy after his pack members spend time with people outside of the pack, but he doesn’t ever try to stop them from socializing outside of the group and cuddles and general close proximity are all he needs to make his wolf feel better!)

…as you can see, I spent more time on this AU than strictly necessary haha

Suppress that side of Mineta completely) He’s more or less stable with another few in the class, but the only perfectly stable ones are those four!

Uhmmm lemme see if I know how to word this properly… it is true that I ship every possible couple out of the four of them, and it’s also true that I ship the ot3 separately too (though I always prefer it if Kiri and Baku are together for ~otp reasons~ haha) and I guess I don’t mind the ot4 either? They give me a warm feeling and I love to think about them happy and together all flopped over each other and being affectionate and loving, but all of this can happen with them being in a really close frienship too, right? And I generally prefer them in that sort of relationship

The reason why is mostly that… how do I put this, every couple and trio have their own very singular dynamics, right? Bakugou and Kirishima’s relationship is gonna be different from Bakugou and Sero’s or Sero’s and Kirishima’s or Kaminari and Kirishima’s, they all have different moods and different feelings and so on, which means that they will have different ways in which they’ll develop too, I don’t know if you’re following me. I’m not saying that it’s impossible for all four of them to develop romantic feelings towards all the other three at the same time starting from such different relationships, it’s completely possible and that’s why I don’t mind the ot4 at all, but when I have such a huge playground to enjoy so many different friendships and relationships and dynamics, boiling them all down to the same “they’re romantically into each other” cuts a lot of the fun, for me!

So tl;dr what I mean is that I don’t mind the ot4 and I might draw for it in the future, but it’s more entertaining for me to pick a couple/ot3 and see how the other dynamics shift because of it then just put them all in the same relationship!

Also, I’m a fan of the idea of the four of them ending up being overly affectionate and tactile with each other anyway, so in the end romance or not what’s missing is just the kisses, isn’t it? I don’t draw n sfw anyway haha

Angerme's Katsuta Rina talks about her love for Hello! Project with "20 Questions"!

In 2018, Hello! Project is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so we’re starting a celebratory serialization for it! From the members of Hello! Project, their feelings and thoughts towards the 20th anniversary and activities up until now, as well as enthusiasm towards 2018 and the everyday thoughts of idol life; we did a “20 questions 20 Answers” talk~ This time Angerme’s Katsuta Rina is appearing!

Katsuta Rina = Born April 6th 1998, Hometown Tokyo. Bloodtype A. 2nd generation member. Nickname Rinapuu~.

Q1: Tell us the origin of your name!

There isn’t a particular meaning; there was good luck between my last name and first name character stroke count, so that became my name.

Q2: What senior do you aim towards?

Former Morning Musume’s Michishige Sayumi-san. I was a 5th grader when I joined the Kenshuusei, I hadn’t yet made my debut, but Michishige-san was extremely kind to me. I got to appear in Hello! Project lives, and at that time it made me happy that she would freely talk with the kenshuusei. I of course admire her performances, but overall I admire her personality.

Q3: Who would you want to be reborn as?

If I became Suzuki Airi-san (Former C-ute) I could sing crazy well (lol). For singing, I’d want it to become Suzuki Airi-like; she has a voice quality and atmosphere than can’t be imitated by anyone. I think that if I could sing like I her I would be absolutely happy.

Q4: What are you the best at in Hello! Project?

Being ‘My Pace’? It is important to adapt to the group you’re doing activities in, but I just do things on my own at my own pace. People are often surprised as to how my pace I am (lol).

Q5: Tell us something amazing about Hello! Project!

Idols may have the image of being like dolls, but Hello! Project’s singing and dancing comes in like a bang! We don’t hide and always dance and sing live (lol).

Q6: Who would you want to have a Hello! Project special unit with?

Former Morning Musume’s Takahashi Ai-san and Michishige Sayumi-san, former Berryz Koubou’s Natsuyaki Miyabi-san and Sugaya Risako-san, and former C-ute’s Suzuki Airi-san, the six of us. They are simply my favorites. I would be happy with having that kind of unit.

Q7: Tell us an Angerme song you like!

“Tsugitsugi Zokuzoku”. With this song truly, we are able to have a different feeling with each performance, every time. Because I simply love it I enjoy dancing to it the most, its Angerme’s one song where I want to show expressions and I will definitely do it in that song.

Q8: What is a Hello! Project song you like?

Buono!-san’s song “OVER THE RAINBOW”. It’s a bit of a ballad chick song, but I like it because I like ballads. I really like Buono!-san. The members are the best; they only have good songs. This song is among them. I like this song the most.

Q9: What is the difference between current and previous Hello! Project?

To speak of previous Hello! Project, the era before I had joined Hello! Project, the OG’s had a strong image when they were active. At that time they were too amazing, it really felt like they were untouchable, there is a part of me that forever admires them. I’ve thought, ‘are they the same Hello! Project?’; we are completely different now. The current Hello! Project is far from the image of idols and there are a lot of groups, even that part is completely different I think.

Q10: Other than yourself, who is your oshi within Hello! Project?

Because I like fashion, my eyes are drawn to members who have fashion as a hobby. Therefore……perhaps Sasaki Rikako-chan? Rikako-chan does modeling and she is cute.

Q11: What do you want us to see most from yourself?

I use the fashion app WEAR, so I’d like you to check it out. Because I like fashion, I’ll style the members costumes; I would like you to get into it from there. When I look at wear, I think its better thing for those who like fashion to understand it; now I’ve been collecting street casual things.

Q12: What is work you would like to challenge?

An overseas business trip (lol). I’ve been doing this work for seven years, and although I am very interested in it I have never gone even once. So, I definitely want to do overseas work. It would be nice if it was fashion related work or if it was for a group live, in any case I’d like to do work overseas!

Q13: What do you want people to see most from Angerme?

The goodness of the groups atmosphere. All of the members hang out in private because we all get along and I think we communicate that atmosphere, but we’re not able to get all of it across at lives. It’d be nice if we could transmit more of our everyday atmosphere. This is something I aim towards, I want to communicate our presence!

Q14: What will you be doing in 20 years?

In 20 years I’ll be 39 (lol). I’d like to be relaxing you know~. I did a ton of stuff in my teens, so I’d like to settle down. It may still be impossible in my 20’s, but I think after I become a grandmother, my dream for the future is to go and relax in Hawaii. After 20 years I’d like to be comfortable.

Q15: Since it’s the 20th anniversary, tell us a secret!

I don’t really have any secrets……but a light one would be good. We have 10 members, when getting take out food we’ll play rock paper scissors, we’ll battle with a “lets go,” and I’ll generally get what was my first pick. Its like, I’ll put pressure on it casually (lol). If I lose the battle and what I wanted was chosen, I’ll say “Eh, I wanted to eat that~” a lot. Because everyone is nice, they will say “Then you can have it,” and give it to me (lol).

Q16: After the 20th anniversary what would you like to do?

I want to get my drivers license. When I was little I grew up with tomica’s, I love cars. Therefore its my dream to get my license and drive my own car. I want to drive a foreign car (lol).

Q17: What would you be doing if you weren’t an idol?

Fashion work. I might have aimed to be a model in the entertainment world, but it’d be nice to become a worker at an apparel shop. In any case I’d want to be in a job involving fashion.

Q18: What are you most into right now?

Instant cameras. Aren’t there things that will only happen in the fitting room? I want to log those things on a camera. I can take photos with a phone, but with data it gets a bit boring. I wanted something to last with only one moment so I bought it; the various members will take photos. Now I’m saving the photos in an album, I think it’d be nice if I’d be able to show the photos to the fans someday.

Q19: What member do you get along with most in Hello! Project?

The only Hello! Project senior I can call ‘-chan’, Natsuyaki Miyabi-chan. We get along because we both like fashion, we’ve gone out together a lot. Generally people will say “She has a scary image to her,”, but she isn’t like that at all, she is very kind. I made friends with her.

Q20: What is an idol to you?

I think idols can transform into anything. For example, they can be actresses or models, they can sing cute or cool songs. They do group and solo work; no matter the work they can do it. Within that, I think that there are things only a group can do, I think that the groups are very precious. It seems like there is only one way to be an idol, but it is able to be a dream job with a surprising amount of freedom.

My favorite idols who have their solo careers

I first thought of making a top 10 list of kpop group members who have their solo albums but I had such a hard time choosing the tenth that I opted to just countdown my favorite 9.

9. Bobby. This member of iKON won Show Me the Money (SMTM) 3 so that kind of stablishes the fact that this boy can rap. I know he technically has not put up a solo album but he did release his single Holup as part of the album of the unit MOBB (Mino and Bobby). I really think he has huge potential since he’s only 21. Maybe if he improves in his songwritting we can really see some interesting music from him in the future. He also has a nice singing voice that actually reminds me of GD not because their voices are similar but because they both have really unique voices.

8. Henry. For those of you who like watching korean variety shows you probably know who he is because he’s been in several shows. If you’re into kdramas then you must watch him in Oh my venus with Shin Min Ah and So Ji Sub. However he is mostly a multi-talented songwriter and has a variety of music that has pop, ballad, classical and hip hop influences. He even wrote a song for EXO’s upcoming album The War. He’s canadian and was scouted by SM to form Super Junior M (the mandarin sub unit of Super Junior).

7. Kyuhyun. I have a huge soft spot for Kyuhyun. My brain knows he’s actually not the best of vocalists and he doesn’t write his own stuff plus his ballads are not too interesting but there is something about the tone of his voice that makes me react emotionally to every song he sings. Needless to say he is my bias in Super Junior on top of that he’s super funny as he has shown in Radio Star and New Journey to the West. He’s currently doing his service and probably we won’t be able to listen to anything from him in two years. His only hit At Gwanghwamun is a must listen but I have so many songs I love like Blah blah, The parting, Piano Forest and Hope is a dream that doesn’t sleep (OST of Baking King Kim Tak Goo).

6. Jay Park. I know calling Jay Park an idol at this point is stretching it a bit and he probably wouldn’t like it but since he once was the leader of 2PM I feel he does qualify. Although I’ve been listening to his songs ever since I got into kpop I didn’t know much about him until recently which kind of only makes me like him more. Controversy aside I love how he rose to success after struggling as an idol. His r&b and hip hop music is so good. Also I think he’s a positive influence on the korean music scene. My favorites are his sexy songs like Sex Trip and All I want to do.

5. Lay. I actually don’t like M-pop. I think it always sound like something you’ve already heard but it’s Lay, my EXO-L heart is predisposed to like anything they do however I do think his first mini album is really good. He opted for an r&b classic sound and it really fits him. My favorite song is his title track Lose Control that shows his song writting skills.

4. Taemin. In my opinion, Taemin (Shinee) doesn’t have a great live voice so when he released Danger in 2014, which by the way concided with me really getting into kpop (I only liked EXO before), I didn’t really understand it. However SM always does things right when it comes to Taemin, every come back he does whether is in Korea or Japan it always has a different sound and most of all a complex and distinct sound. My favorite song of his is Goodbye (Sayonara Hitori) but Press your number was drilled into my head for most of 2016. The new song Flame of Love for his japanese comeback is also amazing. Because he is such a flawless dancer his stages are always on point and he can really stand on his own.

3. GD. He’s just out of this world, isn’t he? A lot of people have called him a genius and he would actually be my number one if it wasn’t for the fact that the songs I like the most from him are Big Bang songs not his solo stuff. Having said that he’s just so good as a solo act. The range of what he can do is amazing. He’s a crazy performer, a great rapper and of course an off the charts producer. His singing voice is just plain weird and I’m not even talking about the way he bends the words while singing but just his tone. I of course like his album Coup d’etat but I’m so obsessed with Untitled, 2014.

2. Jonghyun. I’ve talked about this before in this blog, but when I listened to Shinee’s Jonghyun album She is I became obsessed with it and went back and listened to his previous records and his latest album all made me a fan of his music. I wouldn’t call him underrated but he hasn’t had a huge hit just yet. I think it’s kind of just a matter of time. Let me out, Inspiration and White T-Shirt are my favorite songs.

1. Zico. I don’t have much to say he’s just Zico. If you have been living under a rock or you’re not into kpop then I can say he’s a rapper and a singer member of Block B. Most of all he’s an amazing producer. I think what really showed that side of his was SMTM 4, in each stage of the competition he created beats for his team and the results were chart topping hits like Fear and Okey Dokey. Of course SMTM and Mino had to do a lot with the success of those songs but it still is impressive. I love when he does songs with an indie feel like She’s a baby and I am you and you’re me. but there’s really nothing I’ve heard from him as a solo artist that I haven’t liked. Of course his highlights have to be Eureka, Veni Vidi Vici, Bermuda Triangle and Anti.

Song of the Week

We are back to our regularly scheduled large number of songs a week. And hopefully that means I will like something this week. Let’s just say I’m not looking forward to anything, but I’m up for some possibly nice surprises.

Honorable Mentions:

KBS has decided Mnet shouldn’t get all the money, and has used the fact that there are a shit ton of groups that have debuted and done pretty much nothing after that. So they are taking a bunch of people who have already been trained, and making them compete to debut. Sadly, My Type doesn’t have the power of Pick Me (either version), so as of right now, the reason to watch is Rain. I’m not saying its a bad reason, but it is my only one.

The chorus of DIA’s Good Night is cute and interesting. The rest is super the opposite of the style I like.

Gary has a really interesting style to his raps. He switches between rushed phrasing and more even phrasing, in the middle of a phrase. It adds almost a syncopation to what he does. And all of the verses of 고민 (Worry) have it spades.

There was a Chuseok show called Hyena on the Keyboard that took a bunch of producer and showed their different styles as they all composed a song. There were 4 songs, so here is each in a sentence:

Jung Jae Hyun has Jun Seung Hwan sing super emotionally for his song, in a style that feels almost like a musical.

Yooon Jong Shin made an MV for his, because he is extra.

Gray decided he should have all the artists on his song (Hoody, Loco, Sleepy and himself), and I really like the chorus with Hoody.

Hui impressed me by being so on trend, which I guess isn’t surprising based on his composing Energetic from Wanna One.

The best one is Hui’s, with Gray in a close second. Though I bet if I knew Korean, Yoon Jong Shin’s would have the best lyrics.

I have already listened to Got7′s You Are once before I listened to write this. And most of that listen involved me wanting a keychain of their necklace things. And loving Jinyoung’s voice. That is my whole opinion this listen too. Though props to Jaebum, who apparently composed this one, I have a feeling people will love this chorus.

Idk why all of 2pm is obsessed with doing ballads for their recent solos. I just wanted Wooyoung to rock my world :( I guess Still Here is decent. Just not special.

So, I think that the only cutesy stuff I like is the ones that are over a party track. Think Oh My Girl’s Coloring Book. Or from this week, thing Hashtag’s Hue. One part cute, one part club beat, and for some reason I’m hooked.

I really wanted to like MASC’s Do It. But I think it gets stuck in the retro vibe it is bringing when it doesn’t add anything from this century into the chorus. It is a perfectly decent throwback, and if that is your thing, you will like it. But I really like retro when it references the current as well. Or at least pulls from genres that normally wouldn’t be used together. Something to add interest would have been nice.

I’m not a huge fan of NU”EST’s Where You At, and for once, I have a musical reason (all that band class is finally come in). There is a chord progression in the background that hits this really weird resolution every time. Enough that it made my ear hear it literally every time. And it runs through the whole damn song. Oh, and I sort of hate the chorus. I didn’t expect this song to be so polarizing for me, but there you have it.

HA:FELT gets a mention this week for a pair of MV’s that are cyclical in the way they tell a story. Both inform the other. Both could be seen alone and the basic plot still understood. It is some really cool storytelling, even if I feel a little bit dense for not getting all of the connections between them. I Wander with Gaeko is my favorite of the songs, but it is so similar to Read Me that it isn’t much of a choice. Also, the lead actor’s locomotion in I Wander had me absolutely enthralled.

I’ve talked about the other two Seventeen units, so it felt like a disservice to not talk about the performance team. That being said, 13th Dance is perfectly fine. It’s no Highlight, in dance or song. Hopefully their next full comeback will be better than these team songs.

In a year where a whole of debuts haven’t sounded like debuts, it is nice for TS entertainment to be an absolute disappointment, with TRCNG’s Spectrum. The chorus is good, but the rest is a mess of a group that doesn’t have the charisma or tone to pull of this hardcore of a song. Also, TS is notorious for being crap to their idols, so they decided to add more?

I like the groove that Up10tion’s Going Crazy reaches in the chorus. I’m not sure why, because it is similar to their other stuff which I’ve been pretty indifferent to. Also, way to make a box set cool. The big graphic text that is also an optical illusion is pretty great.

I feel like if Despacito was made in Korea, it would be SF9′s O Sole Mio. And I am a little bit in love. The chorus is addicting, the flamenco guitar, the little EDM-y references. I really didn’t expect to like this song, but I’m glad that it turned out so good. Good enough that I’m gonna give it the win, if only because it is so different that any other kpop song I have ever heard.
