‘‘Sabía que te encontraría aquí’’ (I knew I’d find you here)

Sergeant Christine Vega didn’t even bother to look up, busy tearing a small piece of meat in pieces to feed a couple of stray cats that were patiently sitting in front of her.

‘‘¿Qué coño quieres, Mejía?’’ (What the fuck do you want, Mejía?)

Lieutenant Gonzalo Mejía, formerly from the 19th Special Operations Group "Maderal Oleaga" barked a good natured laugh before sitting down beside her on the stairs to one of the airport’s storage barracks. He tried to ignore the way his knees creaked.

‘‘¿Problemas con Rico?’’ (Problems with Rico?) Shaking his head, he rummaged in his many pockets until he found what he was looking for: his bag of rolling tobacco.

She grunted for all answer, still feeding the stray cats with a gentleness that belied the clench of her jaw. Gonzalo nodded thoughtfully, gazing at the sky briefly before starting to roll a couple of cigarettes.

‘‘Más te vale que no haya maría ahí’’ (You better not have weed in there) Vega murmured, a bit softer while clearly focused on the cats. One of the furry creatures was rubbing against her leg, leaving orange hairs all over her combat trousers.

‘‘Eso se lo dejo ya a los jóvenes’’ (That I leave for the younglings now) Mejía chuckled, extending his legs and arching his back for a moment before relaxing again and continuing rolling the cigarettes.

They weren’t exactly friends. She was half his age, he had been in HeadHunters for longer than he cared to remember. She butted heads with Rico, specially after Colonel Greer was more and more absent from the operations, he knew how to smile and nod each time their CO started with his bullshit.

They weren’t friends, even though many thought they were, just because both of them were Spaniards. They weren’t friends, but they weren’t enemies either.

‘‘Gilipollas’’ Vega grunted under her breath, clearly thinking about her last conversation with their Captain, but her hand was scratching the cute orange cat behind the ears. Gonzalo laughed again and lit one of the cigarettes.

‘‘¿Qué hizo ahora nuestro buen capitán?’’ (What did our good Captain do this time?)

‘‘Tocarme los cojones’’ (Get on my nerves) She dusted off her hands after the cats decided to look for better things to do, and leaned back against the steps, resting her elbows on them. ‘‘Estuvimos fuera durante tres días, acabamos de llegar y ha ordenado repostar nuestros vehículos’’ (We were out for three days, we just got back and he has ordered our vehicles to be refueled)

‘‘Tiene pinta de que te vas otra vez’’ (Looks like you’re going out again)

‘‘Claro, porque no hay ningún puto pelotón disponible’’ (Sure, because there isn’t any other fucking squad available) Vega rolled her eyes, sarcasm dripping from her tightly clenched jaw.

It wasn’t a secret in HeadHunters that Sergeant Vega’s squad were black sheep in the unit. Pariahs. The only ones that kept to themselves and weren’t guilty of worse crimes than the ones that had landed them there.

Ramirez had been caught gambling too much. Harper had stolen rations from the officers’ mess hall. Silva went AWOL for two weeks for his birthday before sauntering back into his base, and had the gall to get offended when he was imprisoned. Harrison bribed another soldier to cover her guard shift. And Vega had beaten a Staff Sergeant that was getting frisky with a Corporal.

But HeadHunters had way worse people. Theft, DUI, drug trafficking, heavy insubordination, assault, war crimes against civilians, you name it. The worst of the worst, some of them should be behind bars or dead. But Colonel Greer knew the expendables had little to live for, and lots to earn from it.

But nobody really knew why and how Mejía ended up in HeadHunters.

‘‘Bueno, siempre puedes solicitar el traslado a otra unidad’’ (Well, you could always apply for transfer to another unit) He said thoughtfully, lighting up the second cigarette with the first, and offered it to her. After a moment of hesitation, Vega took it.

Both knew there wouldn’t be a transfer.

‘‘Trabajaría para Shadow antes que aqui’’ (I’d work for Shadow rather than here) She grunted slightly, taking a long, angry puff of the cigarette and then exhaling the smoke slowly. ‘‘¿Tú no?’’ (You wouldn’t?)

‘‘Si fuera más joven, quizá’’ (If I were younger, maybe) Mejía shrugged, looking up at the sky. The sound of helicopters was so constant lately that both of them were used to it, barely registering. Engine sounds, distant yelling, sometimes the howl of a dog. ‘‘Pero aguantaré lo que pueda y después me iré. Hice una promesa’’ (But I will stay for as long as I can and then, I will leave. I made an oath)

‘‘Putos Legionarios’’ (Fucking Legionnaires) Vega chuckled, and Mejía grinned as well.

‘‘Si, si, Pero es verdad. Cuando me alisté hice una promesa. Cuando me retirara, volvería a mi iglesia de Santa María de Gracia y daría gracias a mi novia por mantenerme vivo’’ (Yeah, yeah. But it’s true. When I enlisted I made an oath. When I would retire, I would go back to my church, Santa María de Gracia, and would thank my girlfriend for keeping me alive)

‘‘Pensé que estabas casado’’ (I thought you were married)

‘‘Y lo estoy’’ (And I am) Mejía winked at her, still chuckling. The bastard obviously thought he was very funny.

Vega shook her head, smiling in spite of herself, but her expression soured quickly when both of them heard voices approaching. Voices they knew well.

‘‘About time I found you’’ Captain William Rico looked down at them, disapprovingly, and his frown deepened when none of them bothered to stand up and salute. Behind him, Floyd smiled broadly under his ridiculous moustache. By how red his eyes were, he was high again.

‘‘Find who, oh captain my captain?’’ Mejía sniggered, which only made Rico’s frown turn stormy.

‘‘I’ll deal with you later, fucking Spaniard’’ His eyes turned to Vega, eyeing her up and down. As if he were measuring how exhausted and dirty she was from the mission she had just arrived from. ‘‘Is your team operative?’’

‘‘We just arrived last night’’ She held his gaze, almost unblinking, and both Floyd and Mejía were enjoying the spectacle greatly.

Ever since Colonel Greer had hired her, Rico and Vega’s tempers had clashed. Oil and water. Cats and dogs. If looks could kill, they would have been dead the week after she joined HeadHunters.

Vega hated incompetence and stupidity, Rico had both in her opinion. Rico hated insubordination but that gave him an excuse to blow up. But Christine Vega was never insubordinate. She would glare, she would be curt with her answers or not answer at all, but never outright disrespectful. At least in Greer’s opinion.

‘‘That isn’t what I fucking asked, Sergeant’’ Rico grunted impatiently, and her eyes turned even icier somehow. It always amazed Mejía how about to explode she could look without losing her cool and start beating the Captain.

‘‘My team is operative’’ She murmured between clenched teeth, making Mejía and Floyd exchange an amused look.

‘‘My team is operative, sir’’ He spat at her, with his arms crossed over his chest. It was bad enough that she – nor Mejía – hadn’t bothered to stand up yet. But her refusal to address him by any other than his surname or the occasional Captain it was grating.

That fucking bitch was stubborn like a mule.

‘‘My team is operative’’ Vega repeated, completely calm, but her left eye twitched lightly.

God, what wouldn’t Mejía give to see those two punching each other to death. That would maybe make that bloody heat bearable.

Captain Rico and Sergeant Vega kept their duel of stares, none of them willing to give in. Until Floyd decided to step in and give the Captain an out.

‘‘Captain, sir, remember you have a video conference in your schedule’’ He checked his tablet briefly, and not for the first time, Mejía wondered what kind of dirt did that drug addict have on Greer and Rico to be the Captain’s assitant in spite of his obvious shortcomings. ‘‘In ten minutes, sir’’

‘‘Noted’’ Rico grumbled again, still glaring at Vega, who was glaring right back. At least she was still sitting on the stairs. It infuriated the Captain to no end that he was barely taller. ‘‘Get your squad ready to go, food and ammo for one week. I will give you the roadmap and instructions in two hours, report to the vehicle shop with your people’’

Vega breathed deeply when Rico turned away and stormed off, followed by Floyd. Mejía was still sniggering quietly, his cigarette all but finished, hers still halfway and dangling from her fingers, snuffed out.

‘‘Un día, chiquilla, os matareis el uno al otro. Espero estar ahí para verlo’’ (One day, little one, you will kill each other. I hope to be there to see it)

The other day we were chatting with some friends about how so many English-speaking female novelists of the 19th century were daughters of clergymen (Austen, the Brontës, Gaskell, Alcott...), and I joked about Catholicism eliminating the pastor daughter trauma via celibacy, and it opened an illuminating conversation to me.

Someone argued that the comparative lack of female novelists in the Hispanic world would be a consequence of women having less access to education compared to the English speaking world, which I don't feel is at all true; by keeping and allowing religious life for women (which was self organized economically and culturally, and lead to some abbesses to be pretty powerful even in a political sense) many of them were able to reach literacy and become authors.

And surely it was counter-argued that nuns wouldn't be allowed to write novels, and that reminded me and made me consider in a new light the literary tradition in the Spanish language (keep in mind that, while I'm not completely ignorant on the topic, I'm also not an expert and I'm making generalizations because I'm grasping with certain undefined ideas).

So, the basic thing is that romance in the Spanish language begins with poetry. A good part of the early Spanish poetry is called romance because it's written in romance language; and while a part of it is epic (like the song of Mio Cid) or of religious tone (The Praises of Our Lady, by Gonzalo de Berceo), a lot of it is romantic and erotic. And that's more or less the same situation to the Spanish Golden Century; from poetry to theater, which is written in verse, there's just a step, and there you'll find romance stories like Lope de Vega's Peribáñez and the Commander of Ocaña.

Meanwhile the Spanish novel is focused on theses, satire and customs; Don Quixote is satire as a spoof of the French Chilvalry novels; The Blind Man's Guide of Tormes is costumbrist satire. Later on the bulk of the Spanish novel will be the thesis novel: a novel written to demonstrate an idea about people, ethics, or society. When you think about it, the fairytale as a genre is basically absent from Hispanic literature; there isn't a corpus of the Spanish fairytale the way you can argue for the German or the French or even the British. The closest it gets in Spanish is the fable, and adjacent proverbial-metaphorical writing like Count Lucanor (this is due to a mixture of heavy Arabic and Jewish influences mixed with classic Greek culture).

As a side note, yes, an argument can be made for pre-columbine myths and legends, but those aren't really Hispanic, are they.

And this is all what is called Spanish Realism. Until Hispanic literature collides with the boom of the English language novel (and Verne on the French side. Can an Italian elaborate about Italian lit? Because I was thinking about how Salgari, while being on the same wavelength as Verne, doesn't have such a pronounced interest in sci-fi, and heavily leans on the adventure side), the fantastical is basically non existent, and when it is present, it's framed as unsettling and disturbing, a sensation that something is wrong (I'd argue this is even the case for Magical Realism later on). Romance, on its part, remains tightly tied to poetry.

So, ultimately, to track an equivalence with the English speaking female author of the 19th century, you should look for its Hispanic counterpart in female poets.

But also it is a curious thing that a language that has a whole specific mode to talk about possibility and fantasy, would be so deprived... of fantasy. Maybe it's English itself which, by lacking an extensive language to talk about it in everyday life, ends up having it burst in literary writing. In a way I feel it explains to me my own inability to get into fantasy and sci-fi, as either a reader or a writer. My enjoyment of Tolkien is mainly about his prose, poetry and themes, while I'm mostly uninterested in the worldbuilding. It's not that I think there's anything wrong or that I intellectually dislike about fantasy or sci-fi. I just don't vibe with it. And maybe it is that my brain grew fed within the Hispanic tradition, and is more or less set in that mold. Which big if true.
