hi i decided i'm doing another one of these. it's been a minute. this past week was summer games done quick, an annual speedrunning marathon raising money for doctors without borders and also a great way to get into watching speedrunning. a lot of their content is tailored towards being both clearly explained and fun to watch for an audience outside the speedrun community, so you can jump in with basically no knowledge besides “this person is gonna play a game really fast”.

gdq has the full week's worth of vods up as a playlist on their channel, but here are some runs that i personally think you should check out:

ken griffy jr presents mlb by peanut butter the dog: look it's a dog playing baseball. i don't know what else to tell you.

the entire silly block: speedrunners get up way too early in the morning/late at night to play games that feel like a fever dream. some of the commentators are going on 24 hours of no sleep. it's brilliant. my personal highlights of what i've seen so far are stuart little 2, mad panic coaster, city bus simulator race, and the golf it wrong hole only race that the players dressed up as golfers for

alan wake 2 alan%: alan wake clips through walls and generally has a bad time while a bunch of gamers call him a sopping wet catboy. the runner for this one is really charismatic and it's very funny to see staff rushing to open up the pit as soon as we sing starts (yes they do the dance of course they do the dance). i just love joyful runs of horror games man

super mario 64 blindfolded randomizer: what if you played mario 64 blindfolded and also the stars were in completely random locations. and also you had to do it very very fast.

kingdom hearts 2 critical any%: every kh2 speedrun i've ever seen is a work of art and this one is no different. some of the boss fights go down so fast you will literally miss them if you look away for a minute. and also two of my favorite runners are on couch commentary!

balatro showcase: genuinely made me rethink how i'm playing some of the balatro decks. also great commentary and just fun all around despite (or perhaps partially because of) the absolute struggle session going on with plasma deck in the beginning

super mario world kaizo relay: kaizo is a shorthand term for a game hacked to its absolute limits of difficulty that often requires strict precision of movement and can punish the player for thinking they're smarter than it. in this segment, two teams of 4 very very good mario runners race to complete 8 kaizo levels they've never seen before in their lives

mario maker 2 troll level race: i always like the mario maker races for the same reason i like the kaizo relays. i love watching two speedrunners thrown blindly into the shit have to make up strategies on the fly via trial and error (and error, and error, and error, and...)

kirby air ride race: two high level kirby air ride speedrunners race for an actual physical title belt. the trash talk game happening here is of the insane variety that only two very skilled people who truly respect each others' talents at their game of choice can provide

kaizo mario galaxy: what if mario galaxy hated you even more than usual and would stop at nothing to kill you. also most of the commentators are only familiar with the vanilla game and their reactions to the added-in bullshit are hysterical

tony hawk pro skater 1, 2, 3, and 4: i fell asleep watching this and woke up in a cold sweat to the sound of a bunch of people singing superman by goldfinger. good run

super mario rpg remake: this was the finale block and it's just great to see a bunch of people who really really love the original mario rpg get to hang out and talk about how good it is and also watch a world record level player absolutely stunt on the game

halo 3 four-player co-op legendary: dudes rock

Just a Prank

POV: Taylor Thornton, a famous youtuber, who becomes in a relationship with Rafe Cameron. her viewers are familiar with him as he has been in your videos for a while now. Another thing they are familiar with is that they know she likes to pull a good prank on him once and a while.

you propped up your camera, getting ready and hitting the record button. "hey guys, its Taylor welcome back to my Youtube channel, today we are going to be pranking rafe by being rude to him for however long i can. i am actually very scared because i know this is going to make him really annoyed, so wish me luck!". You smile, taking your camera and slowly walking downstairs to hear the voices of your friends.

"Dude no, Kendricks diss track is obviously better than that flops stupid notes he calls music" Kelce complains, rolling his eyes at your annoyed brother. "Kelce shut the fuck up, you are the biggest bandwagon known to man" topper states, drinking his energy drink as you hold back a laugh. Rafe comes inside from the pool area, luckily not seeing you setting down your camera behind the island table.

"Hey baby, when did you come down" Rafe asks with a smile, you already start to feel bad for doing this to him. You just shrug, and walk away to the cabinet to get some chips to eat. Your boyfriend gives you a weird stare, trying to process what just happened between you two. You try to hold in your laugh, try to contain your composure. "Jesus Taylor what is up your ass this morning" Topper says, snickering to himself. "Sad that nobody else laughed at your joke Top, glad you have some self confidence though" you strike, walking out to the pool to tan.

The other camera was already propped up in between the lounge chairs across from where you were tanning outside. You could smell the cologne from anywhere, and knew who was coming to talk to you. "Baby what is wrong, did something happen earlier?" He asks, touching your lower back as you lay your face into the lounge chair. You suddenly sit up, and look straight into his face through your shades. "like you really care Rafe, i am trying to have alone time" you strike back, putting your face back down into the chair, leaving your boyfriend stunned.

"Ok first of all what the fuck, you know i always care about how you feel so do not give me that bullshit Tay, what is your problem today, huh?". He sits up, already getting heated from the attitude you were giving him right now. "Your my problem, goodbye" you just could tell his jaw was dropped, you quietly giggle into your chair. "Are you serious, you think you can fucking talk to me like that Taylor, really?". you simply just ignore him, your timer goes off for you to turn onto your back. "Yea okay, have fucking fun getting skin cancer" He gets up and angrily walks back into his house.

Kitchen-

You laugh so hard, and run up to the hidden camera behind the chairs. "Guys i did not think he would get mad this fast, i was trying so hard not to laugh bro. I am gonna continue some more inside because his sister just got home. Babe if your watching this, i got your ass!" You laugh, running inside to get time to do your next bit. You walk inside the patio doors, Sarah and Wheezie sitting at the kitchen bar. "Hey Taylor girl, when did you get here" Sarah gets up and hugs you. "i have been outside, but i need you guys to stay quiet".

"Wait, why?" Sarah asks. "Well i got bored so i decided to prank Rafe again, who is taking this lovely by the way" you sarcastically reply, turning out the camera on the island. "Oh god, last time this happened you guys literally did not come out of that room for like 4 days girl' she shakes, just thinking at the thought of her best friend and her brother.'' You were about to Reply, when you heard foo steps coming from upstairs. You see Kelce, Topper, and Rafe coming down with clubs, and in Golf attire. "where are you fancy boys going' you strike, sitting down at the bar next to Wheezie. "We have a tee time, you gonna come Tay?' Rafe questions, getting out his golf glove. "mmm no i'm okay, what is the point your balls do not even go THAT far you know?"

As soon as those words came out of your mouth, you could feel the silence in the room. Then laughs by topper and Sarah started to burst out. "Holy shit, she told your ass" Sarah laughs, smacking the island. "Alright miss grouchy ass, enjoy your fucking playdate" then he walks out angrily, hearing a huge slam from the range rover. "Uhh we should probably be going" topper adds, leaving abruptly, with kelce close behind him. As soon as they left, you Sarah, and Wheezie fell into a pit of laughter. "Oh my gosh that was so mean i feel so bad" You cry-laugh, as you reach for your camera.

"Girl i am terrified for you, good luck up there sis" she says, patting you on the back and going to her room. You go up to your room to see that you received texts from rafe just after he left.

Baby: Taylor what the actual fuck is up with you right now

Baby: You like treating me like shit in front of my friends, is that it huh. You wanna embarrass me?

You ignore the texts, and go into your boyfriends room while sitting on the bed. You doze off into a nap after your long day. When you wake up, you check the time and it reads 6:30, shit! Rafe will be home any minute. You set up your camera, and wait for him to come in. You scroll on Tiktok for a while, looking at cute dogs when suddenly you hear the door knob turn, and your boyfriend walking into the room, sweaty and tired from the tee time. He notices you on the bed, does not say a word, and steps into his bathroom.

You soon hear the shower running, and that is when you realize he might actually be upset. "Okay guys, i think i am gonna end it here because i feel so bad, even if he is cute when he gets mad" you whisper, taking your camera and heading to the bathroom. You turn the knob, and enter the bathroom to see Rafe with just a towel around his waist, testing the water temperature to get in. That is when he notices you coming inside, stepping away from the shower. "here to come yell at me some more" He asks, crossing his arms like a child which made you laugh a little.

"You think this is some funny joke Tay" He asks. "Yes baby, it is i was just pranking you im sorryyy" you beg, putting the camera into his face, as his body started slowly getting less tense from the anger. "Are you serious, thats not funny i thought you were mad at me Baby". you look in awe, as you put down the camera and hug around his waist, as he picks you up by your hips. "Im sorry baby. but it was pretty funny" You state, kissing him on the cheeks, while you hug him. He just smiles, puts you down and grabs the camera. "This girl is a dweeb" he says. You just laugh, and get ready to join him in the shower.

when they were writing smfsd, they had friends telling them that they should just release swgd 2.0, that it was the perfect time for it, but pete thought that was wrong and that it was "exactly not the time for it". he didn't want to do a retread, and he feels that when artists try to recapture the early magic it's just not possible. he thinks about when fob/mcr/patd first got big, green day felt like the position fob is in now, how GD had been a band for 20 years and they made a record that pete felt was adjacent to what they were doing & reminded people why green day was so big & why they loved them, and thats what they were channelling during the writing of lftos/smfsd- how it can be adjacent to all the stuff that's happening, but it shouldnt be a retread and it shouldnt be chasing what is happening right now

In light of the news that the RT website and apps will shut down on May 15, I'm starting a record of what I've got saved locally + what I'm planning to save. I am not trying to get a comprehensive archive of all AH/LP content; that's what the Archive of Pimps is for. Instead, this is a personal library that prioritizes content that I enjoyed and want to rewatch down the road.

YouTube and new TV

YouTube is one of, if not the most popular ways to engage in video media in the modern age. I am in my mid-20s now, and I do not watch broadcast television at all. Subscription services like Netflix and Disney+ have meant that users can now curate their watching experiences, watching what they want, when they want, instead of having to watch for a certain time of day for a show to air.

Netflix is a giant in today's media consumption

Unlike these other subscription services, YouTube is a user driven site and thrives off the very low bar of entry for creators. All you need is a camera, and/or microphone, and a computer. This means that videos can be and are about anything. Videos of people playing videogames, rating their personal preferences of foods, tourist commentary, chemical demonstrations, original animation and music, or just educating other on your favourite things.

Getting paid for your creations on YouTube is a tricky topic I do not want to get into deep today, but to get to today's topic, there is a sweetspot of length. A very short video does not pay well, and a very long video does not either. And it is tragic that longer videos do not get the recognition, reward, and engagement they deserve, because I have recently become very aware of how good the long form video catalogue is on YouTube these days.

Long Form Video Content

Now it can be quite easy to make a long video, but what I'm talking about today is beyond just stream archives and let's play compilations. I'm talking about feature length discussions of topics that the creators are passionate about and have put their passion into. In the early phase of planning this article, I came across two terms to describe my taste: Video Essays, and Documentaries. And there is a difference.

Now, Documentaries exist as a broad appealing form of media outside of YouTube. But the difference between a David Attenborough narrated exploration of nature and an explanation of the history of speedrunning a Wii game is resources and interest. The BBC would not greenlight funding for a History of Speedrunning, because it is a niche topic that will not have the broad appeal necessary to return on the cost to make that documentary at a BBC level budget. But just because it does not have mass appeal, does not mean it doesn't have appeal. The reason why I'm writing this article is because these are topics that will engage a niche audience, and these videos would not exist without the passion of the creators.

GenoSamuel's documentary of ChrisChan is a very unique case of something that can only exist on the internet.

The point of a documentary is to document. It is a presentation of collected facts, with little room for interpretation other than the presentation itself. BBC's Blue Planet is not a narrative any more than the the History of Wii Sports Resort Golf Speedrunning is. They are a curated presentation of knowledge on the topic that is enjoyable because it is easier to enjoy in one complete package rather than the interested party having to seek out and consume the scattered information themselves.

A Video Essay on the other hand is exactly what the name suggests, it is an essay in video form. It is the creator making an analysis or argument on a topic, often by dividing their video into sections, presenting information supporting their point of view. Video Essays are often more emotion driven, targeting the viewer's empathy to support the creator's opinion, either by making them happy, sad, or angry with the information presented. Video Essays do not exist as a popular form of media outside of YouTube, since their scholarly/professional equivalent are written essays. The idea of the Video Essay is not unique to YouTube but it is the best platform for independent long-form media. On the internet, there's an audience for everything, and a someone willing to present their opinion on it.

Contrapoints is a trans video essayist that discusses societal values, politics, ethics, and trans rights.

It might be my personal taste evolving, but even if YouTube doesn't financially support the models of Documentaries and Video Essays, the rise of crowd funding e.g. Patreon, has meant that the model becomes more feasible, and as a result, the general quality and variety of good long form videos has increased on the platform. So I'm take a bit of more of your time to recommend some of my favourite creator's of such media, and my favourite videos they've made.

The History of Wii Sports Resort Golf World Records

Summoning Salt

Summoning Salt is a historian of videogame speedrunning. To the outside observer, speedrunning may not seem like a topic that needs or lends itself well to documentation, but in reality it works very well. Since Speedrunning works around reporting your records via footage, there is lots of footage to demonstrate the topic. And if you fear getting lost in the jargon of techniques, Summoning Salt is very good at explaining the runs in laymen's terms. His sound design, narration, and how the video is formatted makes it easy to follow a topic, and the Documentaries go at fast enough pace that you never feel bored down by unnecessary detail.

The video that introduced me to Summoning Salt and the true depths of speedrunning was their video on Wii Sports Resort Golf. It was a tale of competitive spirit, flukes of ingenuity, and tenacity. What was one person's whim became a series of trials for many. How far can you stretch the technical ability and exploits of a Wii Motion Control Game? Very far it turns out. At 36 minutes, it is a shorter doco, a great introduction to Summoning Salt and his genre. It is a gripping tale that I implore you to experience for yourself.

Disney Channel's Theme - A History Mystery

Defunctland

Defunctland is a historian on theme parks, children's media projects, movies, and shows. Their origin was in extinct theme parks, but the breadth of topics discussed has expanded. While theme parks documentaries are not an uncommon subject area on YouTube, nobody does their research quite as thoroughly or directly as Defunctland. Much of the information presented in their works are things the creator had found out themselves via interviews with involved parties, or trudging through deep internet archives, all to put together complete packages.

The first video I watched of theirs is the latest (at time for writing) and is a story of how Defunctland found out who wrote the theme song for the Disney Channel. Given it is only a four note melody, it seems like it would not be difficult to find, but there are several layers of intricacies about channel tones, Disney's marketing teams, and composers that make this a very long journey. It is an emotional tale that does great tribute to those artists involved. Do watch!

Folding Ideas is a documentarian who discusses ideas that often affect society at large. Some topics are meta discussions of how to make media online and analysis of certain media products, others are societal level analysis of phenomena such as Flat Earthers. Breadsword is not your typical video essayist, I would describe them more as a story teller. Breadsword's target content is nostalgia bait for people who enjoy feel good media, be that older anime, disney and dream works movies from the 90s and early 00s, or even videogames. The videos of Breadsword are a love letter and analysis of childhood memories, stories from their internal development, deeper meanings, and why we should (or do) enjoy these pieces.

The first video I watched of Breadsword was their exploration of Treasure Planet, one of the last 2D Disney feature-length films. The video is both an exploration of all the technical and narrative techniques that made this movie great and how Disney tried to sabotage its success. Breadsword makes the argument that since movies like Treasure Planet are so technically demanding, and 3D animation was on the rise, Disney wanted the film to fail, so they had the excuse to change medium. It is an emotional story and a heartbreaking one, and Breadsword tells it very well.

The Undertale and Security Breach Shows. 

Monsters surface to find there are now living robotic furries everywhere. 

Frisk goes to the Pizzaplex and somehow make friends with Bloodmoon. Chara provides snarky commentary and roasts the absolute fuck out of Eclipse, but only Frisk and maybe Golden Freddy can hear what they’re saying. Golden Freddy has no idea how this small child gained control of time with zero magical training (he canonically avoids fucking with soul magic).

Papyrus and Lunar become fantastic friends. Sans and Monty trade scams, but Sans is also secretly judging him for the atrocities entire time. 

MTT and Fazbear brand rivalry. Burgerpants quits his MTT job and gets a job at the Pizzaplex. It’s very somehow an improvement.

Undyne and Bloodmoon somehow become best friends over violence, and she also ends up a Pizzaplex security guard. 

Alphys and Moon also become science friends and share magic-science research. Moon has so much fun with the blueprints for Alphys’s box bed. Especially after the Foxy incident. He modifies it so his bed turns into a nice pointy star shape, and puts the Computer in control of that, so nobody can use his bed without his or the Computers’ permission.

The Frisk and Bloodmoon Show! Every game they play is basically that bagel meme.

Frisk and Bloodmoon play Security Breach. Frisk manages to pull the Fazerblast glitch that lets them skip straight to the Disassemble Vanny Ending, after somehow glitching their way to the Princess Quest games while exploring. Thus they manage to cheat their way to a Pacifist Ending on the third video.

They actually SAVEd right before recording, and learned how to glitch their way to the Princess Quest Ending through trial and error. But nobody except Flowey, Chara, and Golden Freddy need to know that they cheated hard to get to a good ending without hurting anyone.

Bloodmoon is enraged and destroy their computer over this. They wanted to see some carnage. They aren’t satisfied until Frisk lets them use their account to finish the game themselves. They very intentionally get the Disassemble Vanny Ending, the proper way, and are disappointed that Vanny’s death wasn’t graphic enough.

Papyrus sees Frisk getting popular from their channel, and The Papyrus and Lunar Show is born. Lunar cries during their first scary game and Papyrus just abandons the computer mid-recording to break into the Daycare and comfort him. Unlike… some people,  Papyrus never forces Lunar to play a scary game again. He does all the playing for the scary games, unless Lunar volunteers on his own

This inevitable causes Undyne to start The Undyne and Alphys Show because everything is a competition to her. Undyne tries to brute force everything and Alphys nervously tries to play things smart.

Mettaton, after seeing Alphys start a channel, and realizing that Freddy and Glamrock Freddy, two of the biggest faces of his rival company, also have channels, he starts The Napstablook and Mettaton Show. Yes, Blooky’s name goes first. His favorite cousin deserves some of the spotlight. Blooky ends up being the more popular one on the channel.

Blooky somehow ends up as Glitchtrap’s henchman and Glamrock Bonnie’s coworker through chance and sheer lack of confidence. Wrong place, wrong time, and Glitchtrap, being Glitchtrap, just started telling them to do stuff and Blooky, with their utter lack of self-esteem, just went along with it. Next thing they knows, they’re signing a contract to be Glitchtrap’s henchman. Mettaton is disappointed that his favorite cousin somehow accidentally ended up being some weirdo’s evil minion.

Sans keeps setting up illegal hotcat stands in the Plex. Nobody knows how.

The Sans and Montgomery Gator Show also becomes a thing. Monty used Papyrus to bully his fellow scam artist into it. They do a “sponsored message” to Play Gator Golf and Buy Hotcats at the beginning and end of every episode. People usually skip over those parts. Sans also promotes Grillby’s sometimes, just because. Asks people to “tell him sans the skeleton sent you” and asks them to “donate to help pay off my tab there”

Jerry and Trashcan become best friends. And get murdered by Bloodmoon together. Frisk and Undyne witness that, but choose to look the other way. Until it turns out Jerry somehow caught Trashcan’s immortality. Then they choose to walk the other way.

The Annoying Dog and Golden Freddy are old friends. 

They aren’t with eachother anymore, but Asgore and Toriel both individually end up with Golden Freddy in a polycule, and decide to go to group therapy to settle their issues from the Underground so this doesn’t become toxic, and they end up friends again. And sharing a husband.

The wedding is crowded. Frisk ends up staying with Freddy, Shadow Freddy, Funtime Freddy, Mr. Pepper, and Toy Chica during the honeymoon. To get to know one of their new step-brothers and their new sister-in-law. Also so Freddy and Toy Chica can get in some parenting practice. Then Frisk moves in with Circus Baby, Glamrock Freddy, and Monty for a bit. To get to know their other new step-brother.

Flowey somehow ends up on Team Killcode. He wants to be here about as much as Eclipse does. Eclipse and Flowey bond over how much they hate being here and working for Killcode and that they’re both horrible accidents that weren’t supposed to be sentient and how they’d rather be becoming god for their own selfish fucked up reasons instead of being here or getting therapy.

The Eclipse and Flowey Show eventually happens. They’re using their channel to make money so they can hopefully buy their own secret evil lair without KC finding out. They are 100% prepared to stab eachother in the back if need be, and are absolutely already planning out how they’re gonna betray eachother once they get the Star. The channel is 90% snark.

Eclipse and Flowey are about as close to best friends as a person can get when they can’t feel feelings (or repress most of their feelings to the point they might as well not have any) and are very pro backstabbing. Flowey also picks up some mechanical engineering skills from regular Eclipse (based on a Flowey from a different crossover AU I have).

Frisk had to repeat the same day about 30 times to save Bloodmoons’ ass. It was a school day, so they had a very limited timeframe to work with. Eventually they ended up faking theirs and Bloodmoons’ deaths, and then bribing Sans to encrypt their channel so the other Shows couldn’t see any new videos.

Sans’s help was actually vital, because Sun just hunts Bloody down if he misses the first shot. Frisk needs to tackle Bloodmoon out of the way and have Sans shortcut in, grab all three of them, and shortcut out before Sun’s vision returns from the lightshow.

Good Eclipse’s dimension is a King Papyrus Neutral Route dimension.

The dimension where Moon Never Existed is a No Mercy Run dimension where Frisk is running around the Surface with 20 LOVE, a burning hatred for everything and everyone, and so much murderous intent. 

They have no friends besides maybe Chara, but would’ve been besties with Bloodmoon if they could exist in that dimension. Completely feral, do not approach, thank fuck the Star can’t be made when Moon Never Existed because they would destroy their whole universe if they could. 

Golden Freddy eventually has to dive into Soul Magic and seal the little menace away.

The Lord Monty dimension gets to be Outertale. Frisk and the gang are all long dead in this one. Except Blooky and Metatron, they’re still alive and going strong. They sometimes do shows with Roxy and Chica.

Monsters are extinct in Lord Eclipse’s dimension, because he absorbed all the magic. His coddling of the human race has left their Determination much lower than before he Reset the universe. Frisk and Flowey, who’s actually Asriel now, survived thanks to their Determination.

 Chara disappeared when Lord Eclipse Reset and absorbed all the magic. Without magic, a SOUL, or a corpse/grave, they had nothing to keep their spirit around, and they vanished. It’s just been Frisk and Asriel Dreemurr against Lord Eclipse’s World for a long time.

Lord Eclipse does not have or know about RESET or SAVE. His Reset using the Newton Star had an unintentional side effect of disabling all of that. Frisk and Flowey panicked at first, when they realized that the SAVE files were completely gone, and that neither of them could RESET anymore. And their Inventories, Frisk was very upset when they realized their Inventory was gone and everything in it was completely inaccessible.

Frisk and Flowey used to be in Monty’s rebellion, before Lord Eclipse took that down. Monty took care of Frisk for a bit, during the rebellion. They were just a kid, but they were also a damn good fighter, so naturally the pro-child-labor guy got to be their guardian. 

Monty even helped transfer Frisk’s SOUL into a nanomachine body as their 20th birthday present, because Monty didn’t want them dropping dead, as humans tend to do. It was only a few years after that that Lord Eclipse finally bored of the rebellion and killed almost every animatronic. And Monty wiped his memories of Frisk and Flowey so Lord Eclipse couldn’t hack him and find out their plan or secrets, the same way he found out where the Star was, to protect them. Thus, at the ripe age of 25, Frisk lost their friends and family to Lord Eclipse again, leaving them with only Asriel.

Nanomachine Frisk gave themself little reminders of what they lost. A red scarf. A blue jacket. Pink boots. Yellow fangs and a ponytail. A dinosaur tail. A locket and pink cheeks. White fluffy ears, red eyes, little white horns, a purple cloak. Purple gloves and spiked wristbands. Just, little pieces of everyone they lost because of Lord Eclipse.

Nanomachine Frisk also has glasses, because I headcanon (and project) that Frisk’s vision is absolute dogshit but they thought they were normal and that that’s just how things are supposed to look. And Monsters don’t know how Human vision is supposed to be. So they generally don’t pick up on the fact that they need glasses until they’re older and someone outside the Monster friend-group tells them.

They also have some serious cracking on their face. They’ve lost some nanomachines over the century, and that’s how they choose to distribute their remaining ones.

Asriel has guns that Monty made, and some mechanical skills he picked up from Vanny, Monty, and Glamrock Freddy, because of the previously mentioned AU that happens to be why I had normal Flowey pick up some engineering skills.

Frisk and Asriel have spent the century working towards finding and collecting SOULs as powerful as the ones from before Lord Eclipse’s Reset. To make Asriel a reality-bending god, powerful enough to challenge Lord Eclipse. Moon and Lunar actually find them in the middle of collecting the 6th. 

Without any living parents, as a Boss Monster, Asriel can’t age normally in Lord Eclipse’s dimension. He instead gets a growth spurt of about 3 years worth of aging every time he absorbs a SOUL. Excluding the first one, which just turned him back into Asriel. Conveniently, they had been out getting that first SOUL when Lord Eclipse took down the rebellion.

Ironically, all the SOULs have been children so far, just like in the Underground. So Moon and Lunar just walk in on a 20-something version of their favorite pacifist (or at least everyone believes their Frisk is a pacifist) stabbing a kid to death while a goat Monster they’ve never seen before grabs at the kid’s SOUL.

Frisk has secretly been planning on being the final SOUL since they murdered that first other kid. Every SOUL reinforces their choice. Not out of some sense of guilt or duty, but because it’s taken a whole century just to get 6. Why waste another 15-20 years hunting for #7, when Asriel can just use Frisk’s extremely powerful Determination SOUL and get this over with now?

They reveal this at the jump point, right after Lunar snaps at Lord Eclipse. They just pull out their SOUL, shove it in Asriel’s hands, and rush Lord Eclipse with a knife. Nobody expected this. The last thing Moon and Lunar see as they leave the dimension is Hyperdeath Asriel facing down Lord Eclipse while a Witherstorm announces its prescence.

Fortunately, it’s canon that Chara and Asriel were sharing Asriel’s body when he absorbed their SOUL, so it’s still Frisk and Asriel against Lord Eclipse’s World when Moon and Lunar go home. Not that the Daycare Attendants were aware of this tidbit, or of who Asriel is. They didn’t even know about the whole Monsters can absorb Human SOULs thing before Nanomachine Frisk told them, because Monsters know better than to just tell people about the thing that got them locked Underground in the first place. 

The point here is that Lunar needs so much more therapy after that adventure in this AU. Was yelling at Eclipse cathartic? Yes. Was learning that Monsters can kill people and absorb their SOULs to become insanely powerful horrible? Also yes. Was realizing that he was a literal a coin flip away from his best friend suffering eternal torment and his other best friend dying before they could even meet horrifying? Very much so. Was watching an older and more jaded version of close friend murder a kid in cold blood, and then be literally vaporized by his ex-brother right before leaving that world to be devoured by an eldritch horror extremely traumatic? Hell fucking yes it was.

Hyperdeath Asriel: You know, Eclipse, I used to be a prince once. A long, long time ago. Way before Sun and Moon were even a concept in someone’s head. It’s funny, really. I thought I stopped caring about them. About anything, really. Then you stole everything from me, and it turns out that yeah. Even without a SOUL or feelings, I still cared a lot. But you know what? That’s where you fucked up. We lost everything. I have nothing to lose now. And there’s everything to gain from defeating you. I’m filled with DETERMINATION

After the monologue there’s fucking boss battle music and his name just appears in front of him. Turns out that having enough DETERMINATION to become a god also lets you start generating magic again, even though the other god altered reality so nobody else could use magic.

Imagine being caught up in a three-way boss battle free for all between immortal gods capable of destroying reality, but one of them is so hopped up on raw overwhelming spite he there’s nothing that can keep him down.

Hyperdeath Asriel: *gets vaporized by an inconvenient crossfire from Lord Eclipse and the Witherstorm*

Nanomachine Frisk’s SOUL: BUT IT REFUSED *forcibly revives Asriel and all the other SOULs*

In an alternate series of events, where Moon accidentally takes Nanomachine Frisk and Six SOUL Asriel home with him, and has to explain why there’s a bitter pragmatic adult robot version of the Monster Ambassador in their ballpit. And then he has to explain it to Toriel. And then he has to explain where he got the fucking dead Monster Prince from. He didn’t even know Asriel was the Prince.

Nanomachine Frisk is pissed. They were so damn close. Azzy just needed their SOUL, and he’d have been all set to take the world back from Lord Eclipse. What was the point if it all gets destroyed by that Witherstorm? Why did they commit all those murders if it’s not to fix things? Why did dad Monty forget them if they failed anyways? What was the point of any of this, if it they couldn’t SAVE a single persom?

Also, Nanomachine Frisk can and will slip up and call Monty dad sometimes. Mom too, every once in awhile. Ruined Monty raised them for 13 years (headcanon Frisk as 12 in Undertale). Of course they saw him as a parent.

They also very much join Sun on the Let’s Kill Eclipse journey. They hate Eclipse so damn much. As long as he’s alive there’s a chance that he gets the Star and Resets the world. They already had a conspiracy board at the ready when Sun snaps. 🦇

I understood maybe half of this give or take but it is very much enjoyable, especially the mental image of the crossover shows. I was outright cackling at the idea of Eclipse and Flower (who I'm pretty sure is a sentient flower?) starting a show together.

Youtube Recommendation: Summoning Salt

Time for something quick and simple, I think. I might be sprinkling posts like this throughout the year here and there, just using this as an excuse to talk about another creator that I really like.

So, any speedrunners in the audience?

Speedrunners both terrify and intrigue me. Even when watching a middle-of-the-road run, or an old run that is vastly outdated by modern techniques, I am always stunned and mystified by the amount of skill, planning, and tenacity that goes into making them work, the hours and hours put into playing the same game over and over again, stripping it down to its absolute bare essentials and looking for breaks in the chain, openings in the plate, which can be exploited as much as possible.

And as much as I love hearing the technical side of all these things, what I love most is learning about the journey that a game takes to become a heavily played speed game.

If you've had any sort of interest in speed running a game, or the practice or people in general, chances are good you've come across videos made by a Youtuber named Summoning Salt. Summoning Salt's videos revolve entirely around speed running, which makes sense considering Salt himself is a very accomplished speedrunner, holding 1st place in six different categories for Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! on the NES. This intimate knowledge on the ins and outs on the process of speed running, and his own experience, lends his videos an important touch of professional knowledge.

His output primarily consists of videos covering the history of the speed running community and record for a particular game, and he doesn't just cover the big games either. While yes, he has touched on games like Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Super Mario 64, and the Mario Kart series, but he's also covered games you really wouldn't expect to HAVE a speed running community, like Wii Sports or the Lego Star Wars saga. He's also done videos spotlighting the careers and attempts to beat the records of prominent speedrunners, like Abney317 in Mario Kart 64 or Jimmypoopins in Ninja Gaiden 2, or videos concerning very specific categories within a community. He's done videos on blindfolded Punch-out and Super Mario 64, as well as a video on the Wii Sports Golf game specifically, for example.

And these videos are like potato chips. I can't watch just one, despite the rather impressive length of them. His older videos usually range between fifteen minutes and a half hour, but his recent videos range anywhere from between forty-five minutes to upwards of two hours as he goes into massive detail on the history of a game, going through every discovery for glitches and techniques, and probably most importantly, highlighting every player that helped to push the game forward or challenge the community's status quo, no matter how small of a role they might have played in the grand scheme of things. No detail is too small if it means talking about some interesting aspect of the game.

His videos are also incredibly easy to understand as well, which lends them well to those who aren't really into speedrunning or might be new to the community. he does use language and terms that are intrinsic to speedrunning, but he generally does a good job of explaining what those terms mean in a way that is very accessible. I compare that to videos from mother speedrunning focused channels that are really into the technical side of things, like Bismuth. Bismuth is another great speedrunning channel, but focuses more on explaining, in great detail, the technical aspects of how certain tricks and glitches work. To give you an idea of their breadth of knowledge, their biggest project is an exhaustive 5+ hour long documentary explaining all of the history and technical aspects behind the A-button challenge, where people try to beat Super Mario 64 using as few A-button presses as possible. It's a really interesting watch, at least to me, but due to the technical nature of their videos, Bismuth's stuff is a bit more niche. Summoning Salt's videos are much more simple, and he uses languages and explanations that are pretty easy to understand, often not bothering to go in depth into the technical aspects of what makes certain tricks work beyond what is necessary to understand the idea behind it, or just skip over the technical details entirely if it would slow down the video, which is focused more on the human element of speed running, the drama and high emotion of trying to reach, and keep, a record.

Even if you're an outsider looking in, I would highly recommend checking out Summoning Salt's channel, just for the entertainment value alone. Ultimately, the videos are stories about the people behind the records, who made the community what it became, rather than focusing on the game itself, and I think that's what makes it so fascinating to watch. The History of Blindfolded Super Mario 64: At the time of my writing this, this is actually the most recent video on Salt's channel. Not the first ‘blindfolded’ video he's done, but I feel like this one better exemplifies the absolute struggles of playing a well known game without the use of sight AND doing it quickly.

The History of Wii Sports World Records: An excellent example of just how Summoning Salt can take something that, conceptually, shouldn't be that interesting or epic, and through just telling you about the people and just how it started to gain popularity, he gets you to care about something as silly sounding as the world record for marathoning all the games in Wii Sports as fast as possible.

The Quest to Beat Matt Turk: This was the video that got me into Summoning Salt's channel, a story about how a dead speedrun community was given new life as a series of runners came together with the collective goal of trying to beat the individual times of the runner who held the world record in every single fight in Punch Out.

The History of Super Mario Bros 3 100% World Records: This is a good blueprint for how most of Salt's videos tend to play out, and it's for a game that is incredibly well known. This is a quintessential Summoning Salt video and will probably give you a really good idea as to whether or not you'd enjoy his content.

Chapter 4: Harvest, Blood, And Sirius React To Fanart

“Okay, so what are we doing?” Sirius asked.

“We’re recording for the channel! See? The camera’s on already and…” Blood Moon zoned a moment, Eclipse was so sick, he was worried about her. She was so feverish he worried about her servos and circuit boards being burned through by the fever.

“And we’re reacting to art and videos people have made of us!” Harvest Moon finished for him.

“That’s the other voice, that must be Harvest Moon, right?”

“Lunar didn’t tell you who was who, now did he? I am indeed Harvest Moon. Blood Moon is distraught over our sibling. The viewers know this, I’m sure they saw the video.”

“For those who don’t, and for Lunar’s friend, Sirius, here, our sibling, Eclipse, was hurt yesterday and she needs repairs so she won’t be here with us today. Our baby sibling, Lunar, sent us his friend, Sirius, who is a similar person? Right, Sirius?”

“Basically, I’m your brother from a different dimension.”

“Sibling, our Eclipse is genderfluid.”

“Genderfluid?”

“Their gender changes.”

“Oh. I…I didn’t know that existed. I’ve never explored gender identity. I can have a crisis over that later, though. You said art and videos?”

“Yes! First picture!” Harvest happily popped the picture on the screen. It was one was of their entire family and some more, all organized into categories.

“Tax evasion category board?” Sirius asked.

“I believe so. Eclipse chose all these pictures for the video, Blood Moon chose the art, I chose the videos. Which one is me…That one! ‘Commits tax evasion frequently’! Ha! Yes, I am not registered to pay them, therefore I do not!” Harvest laughed.

“Where am I?” Sirius asked, looked through the pictures for himself. “‘Pays taxes’, yes I do. If I didn’t, I think my brother might finally come out of Altair’s room and kick my butt.”

“And I know what taxes are, I hate them.” Blood Moon commented.

“Why do you even pay them!? How do you pay them!? We don’t make money!”

“That you know of.” Blood Moon told them.

“What!?” Harvest asked.

“Where do you think the cat food for my stray legion comes from?” Blood Moon asked.

“Stealing!”

“Don’t worry your head about it, sibling.”

“Lunar would absolutely get caught committing tax evasion. To be fair, he doesn’t really understand taxes fully yet.” Sirius commented.

“Moving on. You’re talking about why and how you pay taxes later, Blood Moon.” Harvest grumbled. They clicked to the next picture. It was a shaky picture of Blood Moon biting Eclipse’s arm back during the fight in the daycare.

“Blood Moon, it’s you.” Harvest alerted their twin.

“Me?” Blood Moon giddily surfaced and giggled at the picture. “I would do that to sibling again.” Blood Moon confirmed.

“They look so annoyed.” Sirius laughed.

“They are usually annoyed at us to be fair.” Harvest justified. “Next picture and then we have fanart.” Harvest pressed for the next picture and found it was a picture taken of Harvest Moon back during October in Gator Golf teeth embedded into a blood bag and head upside down as he stared at the camera.

“I remember this. Someone took a picture of me back during October when Montgomery was harboring me and Bloody and I was especially hungry that day. How did Eclipse get this picture from that security guard? How did she even get a picture of me? I ran off after she saw me.”

“Must be quick with her phone, I guess. Are you eating blood?” Sirius asked.

“Our hunger was insatiable during October. We have calmed down a bit.” Harvest told him.

“You calmed down. I still crave. God, we need to make more food after this! I’m hungry after all night up with her!” Blood Moon complained.

“We still have a couple of the brownies Lunar gave us. I’ll get them after the fanart.”

“Oh, he gave me another set of brownies for you. Here.” Sirius remembered and handed them the wrapped ziplock bag of their beloved favorite brownies.

“Oh, we love you.” Blood Moon practically cackled with joy. “Let me out.” Blood Moon requested and Harvest let him in front to giddily eat one of the brownies and switch to the fanart before letting Harvest back out. Sirius was laughing his ass off and holding his stomach he was laughing so much.

The fanart was plushie versions of them with Eclipse seemingly screaming and upset while Harvest Moon was holding up a destroyed cat toy mouse proudly and Blood Moon was hanging onto a bed and struggling to get up. Harvest chuckled seeing them as plushies, especially the positions were funny.

“That one is great. Did you know Monty apparently turned Sun, Moon, and Lunar into plushies a while ago? Like while Moon and Lunar were still in one body.”

“I didn’t actually.” Harvest began laughing more.

“Apparently Lunar’s voice is incredibly high pitched and ear-piercing when he’s a plushie and he hurt everyone’s ears.” Sirius laughed.

“God, I wish I’d seen that.” Harvest smiled, clicking to the next fanart.

This one was Bloody with his legion of alley cats feeding them cat food and Eclipse ‘sneaking’ off with one of them.

“I don’t get this one. Is he raising a cat army?” Sirius asked.

“Okay, so Blood Moon feeds stray cats and he told Eclipse he’d bring them home one because they love cats.” Harvest told him.

“Oh.” Sirius chuckled at that one.

“Bloody would know exactly what cat it is she stole if she did steal one, though.” Harvest commented. “Onto videos.”

Harvest Moon opened and booted up TikTok on the computer to put on the first video saved in their favorites for the recording. It opened with a dramatic screenshot of Eclipse in the last video after their knee got hurt. Then it was was drawn as an animatic.

“Hey, how y’all-“ It was meant to be KC asking, obviously while Eclipse was on the floor by the table holding Solar Flare’s body with their knee hurt. Blood Moon was doing the growling in the video toward KC while KC screeched. “Getcho fucking dog, bitch! It don’t bite. Yes it do get-“ Went the little spat between Harvest and KC while Blood Moon in the animatic bit him.

“Did this happen?” Sirius asked incredulously.

“Well, not like that. It wasn’t nearly as funny. Eclipse was hurt but we couldn’t do anything or he’d accuse us of being a reason they hadn’t finished on time and might’ve hurt them more.” Harvest explained.

“Blood Moon does seem like the biter of the two of you.” Sirius commented so Harvest plucked up Sirius’ arm and bit his wrist rather gently, not knowing his pain tolerance.

“I bite too.” Harvest told him, sticking their tongue out at him.

“Alright, you’re both biters.” Sirius chuckled a bit while Harvest clicked to the next video. This one opened with audio right away with an animatic to go with it of yesterday’s events. The person animating had drawn themselves holding Eclipse and hugging them.

“What happened? I don’t know. Don’t worry, don’t worry. Look, I’m here to help you.” Then it shifted to the animator screaming at KC. “Listen, listen, listen, listen! Fuck off, fuck off, fuck off, fuck off! Get out!” Then to Blood Moon and Harvest Moon. “You amaze me every time.” Harvest Moon was chuckling by the end of it, as was Blood Moon an Sirius.

“Your fans are so protective of you three.” Sirius chuckled out.

“They certainly are.” Harvest commented and clicked to the next one, which started with the animator activating one of the gun barrels and pointing it at KC with Harvest and Blood comforting Eclipse in the background.

“I hope you bulletproof or this about to hurt.” Was aimed at KC before the animator’s character jumped toward KC with the barrel.

“They are very protective of Eclipse.” Sirius smiled.

“As expected. They got hurt pretty bad from what we can tell on top of already having injured themself trying to finish the bot LC is having them make. That was why he hurt her in the first place was over a stupid nonsentient bot he wants and she didn’t finish it completely by the time he got back with me and Blood Moon.”

“I hate your father.”

“So do we now. He was fine at first with me and Bloody, he’s very much a decent parent to us, but he abuses and neglects Eclipse and we love them so that’s unacceptable.” Harvest told him.

“Well, thank you everyone for the pictures, fanart, and videos. I’m not sorry for scaring that one guard who sent Eclipse that picture of me, you scared me more. Thank you for watching.
