Lee would you like to share the inquisitiveheretic cinema classics? 👀
THE CLASSICS. essential films for viewing and understanding my blog. here's the shortest list not in any order:
jennifer's body (2009) self explanatory. essential 00s pop punk watch, essential horror jam for my generation
hard core logo (1996) insaneeee tragic band guy dynamics here its a pain to find but it changed me <3
metallica: some kind of monster (2004) OKAY UM its bonkers. rewired my brain forever. deeply painful to watch (cringe), hilarious without meaning to be (cringe), kind of tragic if you know a lot about metallica (hi). when pete referenced it while talking about smfs i was deeply shaken cuz thats probably the craziest thing he could have possibly said.
velvet goldmine (1998) self explanatory !!!!!
perfect blue (1997) checks all my boxes re: fame + self, also beautiful i luvvv the art style
d.e.b.s. (2004) its LESBIAN FUN and its a masterpiece
house of wax (2005) camp and brutal gore yay! paris hilton death scene slayed
american mary (2012) she did nothing wrong idgaf. femdom rape revenge feminism, body modification/mutilation, katherine isabelle of ginger snaps fame (which also deserves to be on here)
alien (1979) i love sci fi :-) ripley + the xenomorph were in love
fight club (1999) self explanatory see also: chuck palahniuk as adjacently relevant
my own private idaho (1991) :-(
blade (1998) all the best stuff about late 90s/00s horror packed into one banger movie. the soundtrackkkk
rocketman (2019) watched it like 10 times. cried. now THATS how you make a biopic
#there's more (ginger snaps; first 3 saw movies; 80s slashers; dumb 00s horror; etc) but this is the greatest hits#asks#setting-in-a-honeymoon

ok movie may rankingsssss its quite frankly soooo fucking long so i put it under a read more :) MWAH
31. moonage daydream 2022 um so when todd haynes basically said that reagan being in power was david bowies fault in velvet goldmine i get what he was saying when i watched the second half of this. it was so annoying listening to bowie talk about how he was like crazyyyy back then now hes normal (annoying and not in a fun way) boo
30. ladies and gentlemen, the fabulous stains 1982. ok this was actually a flop i wanted to like it so bad but i did not. boo
29. the daytrippers 1996. this was such a movie my indie snob cousin loves. it kind of felt like a long ass seinfeld episode. sorry women. the gay reveal was not. fun. it was 90s straight people trying to do a twist :/
28. muppet treasure island 1996 was ok. it was no the great muppet caper ..
27. spontaneous 2020 i did cry because of this movie i thought it was just gonna be a silly heheh good bad movie but i did cry. and they played forth of july sufjan stevens :(
all the movies after here i would rewatch and i liked :) i had a good movie may !!
26. descendants 2 2017 was not as good as descendants 1 or 3 to me now .. but thats ok they literally had chillin like a villain and the letterkenny guy
25. descendants 3 2019. hmmm i wanna keep her by descendants 2 just so theyre not lonely in this list. the plot was like ok mal having to do her morality thing again thats ok. evie was soooooo izzy lightwood and her loser ass march band boyfriend was sooo simon :)
24. murder on the orient express 1974 was better than death on the nile 1978 and there was a character with my name :) but i think i do not care as much about agatha christie mysteries as i thought i would. thats ok :)
23. arrival 2016 is prob one of the first times i knew about the specific field of the protag and it made me so mad because i spent the whole movie like. she would not fucking do that. she would not say that. come on. and of course the u.s. propaganda was like a frontal migraine but i guess it was good
22. the handmaiden 2016. why didnt anyone tell me about. you know. the plot of the movie. great lesbian sex but what the hell wasall that.
21. donnie darko 2001 was like ok what . fine ok whatever
20. emma 1996 holy shit i watched a lot of 1996 movies this month. ummmmm ewan was there and it was literally emma. what more do you want me to say. it was good ish :P
19. dungeons & dragons: honor among thieves 2023 was so long no movie should be longer than 2 hours but it did feel like playing d&d with my buddies and sophia lillis was there :')
18. i know what you did last summer 1997. its like none of you even care that kevin williamson who wrote this AND scream 1996 is literally a gay ass homosexual man. and my friend.
17. red army 2014. i feel like this should be its own other thing because it was just a movie i would watch at 15 to learn as much about hockey as humanly possible. and not for fun for like mental illness reasons. anyway hockey :)
16. crip camp: a disability revolution 2020 is like red army 2014 like. informative and interesting documentary ! not able to rank it with fiction films i dont think so dont take its spot too seriously.
15. poison 1991. dont worry about it im just studying todd haynes and this movie was not as good as other movies i watched this month but actually its the best movie ever after velvet goldmine. or not its not in my top 3 todd movies of all time but thats ok it still set up many of the things he talks about in his later films esp the connection between the horror section and safe 1995 :)
14. the secret world of arrietty 2010. i didnt watch this until this year bc it was released just after when i would sit down and watch a new little ghibli movie. i wanted to rewatch totoro more than watch new ones.but it WAS the borrowers sooo fun :)
13. monty python and the holy grail 1975. they made lancelot soooooooo ugly which was like a joke in itself to me because lancelot would never look like that. but umm yeah my dad loves this movie and so many little jokes i thought were just family jokes were actually from this movie hehehe
12. the great muppet caper 1981 literally had peter falk in it and they knew they were in a silly movie and they kept saying kermit and fozzie were twins it was so silly and fun :)

ooo north carolina sounds fun!! any specific plans for when you get there (like family visit or skiing or smth)??
my travels have been great so far, thank you :))) visiting some friends rn and family in a week or so
question of the day: top 5 movies?
-🎄
we'll be visiting family friends up in the mountains, and glad to hear you're doing well :)
okay this is a fabulous question and i had to think it over for a bit but i think i've made up my list (and i'd love to hear yours):
5. Knives Out + Glass Onion (2019/2022)
these movies are ridiculous. you somehow managed to take genuinely captivating mysteries and imbue them with a brilliant campiness. forget daniel craig as james bond, he was born to be benoit blanc. modern classics, really.
4. Labyrinth (1987)
david bowie has affected me in ways i can never recover from. jareth the goblin king has affected me in ways i can never recover from. i wanted to be sarah so bad. i still do. i was sarah in my high school's production of it, but did i get to slow dance with david bowie? no. and so the dream remains.
3. A Hard Day's Night (1964)
best beatles movies in my opinion. if there was one movie that felt like a hug on a rainy winter day it's this one. this is my definition of a comfort movie. i love the beatles. they're so stupid and i love them. also bonus points for being ridiculously quotable.
2. Pride & Prejudice (2005)
everyone loves this movie. everyone is also correct. to this day, this remains one of the most beautifully filmed things i've ever seen. jane austen, as always, was right about love and damn will this movie convince you of it. also, i clearly have a thing for ballroom dancing.
Velvet Goldmine (1998)
i am so serious when i say i genuinely think this is the greatest film ever made. this film is everything: it's weird as hell, it's a camp movie about camp, there's glam rock, a blue-raspberry ziggy stardust, ewan mcgregor is nude and writhing in glitter, christain bale is a twink, oscar wilde is there and also an alien. like are you kidding. this was made specifically for me and maybe a handful of others. thank you todd haynes i need to see what your brain looks like.

Two ends of a string: Pinocchio connections masterpost
So. As some of you may know, this year a Pinocchio movie was nominated at the Academy Awards, both for its costumes and for the extensive make-up required to turn some of its characters into their magical selves.
While the movie didn’t win a single Oscar, as well as receiving mixed reactions from that side of the audience less accustomed to the cruder, closer-to-book-canon approach the story took, I myself liked it quite a lot. However, what really got me thinking long before I ever sat down to watch it was its choice of actors, as for the role of Geppetto the director had cast Roberto Benigni - a man who nearly twenty years ago at this point portrayed Pinocchio himself, in a somewhat controversial adaptation of his own.
I ruminated on it for a while, then set out to discover how many (if any) of this kind of coincidences had already happened during the long history of the Pinocchio franchise. And boy, did I find a goldmine of information, not to mention a handful of people who’d posed themselves the same question.
What ended up being collected in this post might not even be the entirety of the answer, both because of plausible faults in the researcher’s work (AKA my slight obsession about the matter and subsequent lack of professionality) and for lack of data, especially when it came to older movies (or, in the case of Steve Barron’s 1996 movie, a strong refusal by most Italian Wikipedia pages to acknowledge the existence of an Italian dub of the very same movie), but it does cover a pretty big chunk of those movies and shows that most Pinocchio fans would at least know of at this point. Hopefully, it will be enough to satisfy your curiosity.
Well, what do y’all say? Want to take a dip into what one of my friends affectionately dubbed The Pinocchioverse? Then come along!
A couple disclaimers before we begin:
this is a long list. Like, massive. I apologize to those who expected me to be a sensible person for once in my life. I analyzed something between 20 and 30 of the main adaptations for this, and despite “only” 16 of them yielding results, it’s still a huge load of stuff to process
visuals were added where possible, but some of them are missing because of lack of HQ/even-just-passableQ stills and/or because the picture would have shown another person, in the case of a live-action dub
most of the names here are Italian, though certainly not because of some misguided attempt at patriotism. Apparently my native country simply loves its mischievous puppets a lot and I can’t exactly fault anyone for that tbh. Some of them physically appeared in multiple local adaptations, but many more devoted themselves to voice acting, or participated in an even mixture of media. A few even went abroad to play a part in another country’s Pinocchio movie, which is what I would call dedication if I weren’t trying to make a serious point
Here we go, then. Seatbelts on!
Roberto Benigni: Pinocchio (2002 movie), Geppetto (2019 movie)
Rocco Papaleo: Cat (2019 movie), Mangiafoco/Fire-Eater (2012 animated movie)
Massimo Ceccherini: Fox (2019 movie), Lucio/Lampwick (Lucignolo, “modern Pinocchio retelling”), unknown character (2009 live theater shows)
Sergio Forconi: clinic patient (Lucignolo), Cecconi (2019 movie)
Lucrezia Marricchi: Cynthia (Pinocchio 3000, Italian dub), Turchina/Fairy (2012 animated movie)
Carlo Valli: Geppetto (La notte di Pinocchio, live theater show), Cricket (2012 animated movie)
Corrado Conforti: Pinocchio (Shrek, Italian dub), Parrot (2012 animated movie)
Paolo Marchese: Jailer (2012 animated movie), Mangiafoco/Fire-Eater (2019 movie, English dub)
Giorgio Lopez: Scamboli (Pinocchio 3000, Italian dub), Alidoro (2012 animated movie)
Luca Dal Fabbro: Fisherman (2012 animated movie), Cricket/Pantalone/Mastiff (2019 movie, English dub)
Emanuela Rossi: Fairy (Bentornato Pinocchio), Dove (2012 animated movie)
Riccardo Billi: Coachman+Master Cherry Italian dub (1972 miniseries), unknown character (1947 movie)
Mario Adorf: Circus Ringleader (1972 miniseries), Geppetto (2013 miniseries)
Teco Celio: Gorilla Judge (2019 movie), Lorenzini’s Henchman (1996 movie)
Mino Caprio: Geppetto (2012 animated movie), Geppetto (Bentornato Pinocchio)
Oliviero Dinelli: Fox (Bentornato Pinocchio), Remigio (2019 movie, English dub)
Luigi Ferraro: Robot (Bentornato Pinocchio), Raven/Circus Ringleader/Mastiff (2019 movie, English dub)
Lauro Gazzolo: Cricket (1971 animated movie), Geppetto (1947 movie, Italian dub)
(For some reason, a good chunk of the original actors in the 1947 movie were dubbed over by famous voice actors of the time. This was apparently the standard practice for many productions of the era, so this instance would have gone unnoticed if not one but four of those VAs hadn’t already given their voice to characters in the Disney movie a few years earlier. Specifically, we’re talking about:
Lydia Simoneschi: Fairy (1947), Fairy (Disney)
Cesare Polacco: Judge (1947), Coachman (Disney)
Carlo Romano: Caporale (1947), Jiminy Cricket (Disney)
Mario Besesti: Narrator (1947), Stromboli (Disney)
It’s worth mentioning that while the three men in this list have largely been forgotten by now, Lydia Simoneschi lent her voice to eight different Disney classics, and as such is remembered affectionately by anyone still listening to those movies’ Italian OST like me, who recognized her name on sight as soon as I scrolled down the cast list.)
Additional tidbits of information:
the movies with the highest number of connections are the 2012 and 2019 ones, with 9 cast members each - most adaptations only had 1 or 2, with a small peak of 4 in the case of Bentornato Pinocchio
Massimo Ceccherini holds the record for having taken part in the most adaptations, with 3, while there are only two cases of people going on to reprise the same role they first held, Lydia Simoneschi with the Fairy and Mino Caprio with Geppetto
incidentally, in one of Caprio’s movies (the 2012 cartoon, specifically) it was his son Gabriele who voiced Pinocchio; the only other familial connection I managed to dig out, albeit far more distant and arguably not as sweet, is the one between Vittorio Gassman (the Green Fisherman in the 1947 movie) and his son Alessandro (Collodi in the 2009 miniseries)
one of the farmers in the 1972 miniseries was played by someone called Mario Ercolani. The man isn’t credited in any other movie to date, which is somewhat understandable...considering that at the time he was holding a prominent position in the Banca d’Italia, and later became the bank’s General Director. Yes, you’ve read that correctly: the Banca d’Italia, AKA the central bank of the Italian Republic, tasked with keeping the stability and efficiency of the country’s economy in check. Ercolani’s successor was none other than Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, who went on to sit as President of the Republic for all of seven years. I am relying all of this in the hope that someone not as in shock as me might explain to me why this man was out and about wearing clogs and cursing at a small child on screen instead of, I don’t know, swimming in money like Uncle Scrooge
before getting down to seriously work on this, I would often joke that when you’re an Italian actor, either you’ve done Pinocchio or you’ve done Inspector Montalbano (police/detective tv show, famous all over the country, my beloved); after making this list, I can now say with some degree of certainty that when you’re an Italian actor, you’ve most likely done both. While many of the actors and actresses listed here didn’t get a spot in the show, either because they were “big names” or primarily voice actors, I can confidently assure you that there are dozens of people who only starred in a singular Pinocchio adaptation and in at least an episode of Inspector Montalbano (and anyway, all these guys up here? Most of them were in Don Matteo. Which, if you ask any of your Italian friends, is pretty much the same thing )
in fact, Inspector Montalbano’s books’ very author, Andrea Camilleri, wrote a delightful screenplay with his friend Ugo Gregoretti called Pinocchio (Mal) Visto Dal Gatto E La Volpe (Pinocchio Seen (With Disdain) By The Cat And The Fox) and even played it on stage, taking on the role of the Fox. You can watch a trailer for it here (unfortunately, the full show was taken off RaiPlay a while ago and can’t be found anywhere else. I’ll keep an eye out, though)
This should be it???? I fear I might have forgotten something, but then again at this point I have pages upon pages filled with notes about this topic (not to mention the dozens of audio messages I sent to those of my friends who for some reasons haven’t blocked me yet). If anyone knows of details I missed, hit me up! I’ll most likely have to update the post at some point in the future anyway, what with all the new adaptations coming out in the next couple years.
Goodbye. I will now go to sleep and hopefully stop thinking about puppets and related shenanigans.
#pinocchio#I started making this post with the best intentions#but I'm a fool so obviously I started making jokes midway through#even earlier than that tbh#lydia simoneschi literally sent the kill bill sirens blaring in my head#I was like '!!!!! I KNOW THIS WOMAN!!!!!'#if there are typos don't tell me I am illiterate as a trade#(jk. obviously tell me. thank you in advance. BUT STILL)#pinocchio connections

A bit late on posting this, sorry my dear, but I was tagged by @woozapooza to list nine comfort films! Only the first two are in order 😊
1. Maurice (1987) - as a tiny queer 14 year old who had no friends - and I mean that quite literally, NONE - this movie was my best friend. I watched it every Sunday to help give me courage for a new week of loneliness. It’s my favorite gay film of all time. I’ve had the god tier pleasure of interacting with Rupert Graves a few times and I have part of a tweet he sent me (“have faith in yourself Xx”) tattooed on my wrist. Sixteen years later, watching this movie still feels like coming home. Literally my warm blanket movie. My heart bursts and I feel reborn. Is there a love that is literally all-consuming? Yeah, I have it for this film.
2. Velvet Goldmine (1998) - here’s another film that feels like coming home when I watch it. I first saw it when I was 17 and it helped me come out as bi to my mom. It got me into glam rock, which was another formative queer thing that helped keep me sane in my loneliness. Watching it obsessively and listening to the soundtrack on repeat were lifesavers. I felt so free. I can’t overstate the impact it had on me. I wore glitter nail polish just to remind myself of it. I was able to interact with the producer once and she kindly retweeted my thanks to her for helping make the film.
3. Les Amants (The Lovers) (1958) - this is my favorite French film, bar none. There is a very slow burn up to a part that is one of the most romantic bits of any film I have EVER seen. Seriously it is drenched in romance and I just bask in it. It feels like it was tailor made for me to feel like I’ve ascended to a higher plane where true love exists. I love watching it alone in the dark, the atmosphere it creates is magical. So soothing, just heavenly.
4. Whisper of the Heart (1995) - this is my favorite non-Miyazaki-directed Studio Ghibli film and definitely in my top 3 Ghibli films. I watched it again this week and it was so calming. It’s one of the best slice-of-life films ever and I adore the characters, especially the heroine. She is very much like me as a young teen and actually still really relatable to me at (almost) 30. It is so uplifting and I feel so at peace living in her world for two hours. The ending is pure joy.
5. God’s Own Country (2017) - another top notch gay film that is really spiritually nourishing. There’s a scene that’s not even a sex scene, it’s just kissing while shirtless, and it’s breathtaking, I think about it at random moments during the day. It’s one of the most tender things ever. In general I adore the two men and the journey Josh O’Connor’s character goes on in his self-growth, it’s really moving. I did love him in The Crown but to me he’ll always be Johnny. I could legit watch this every day.
6. The Lure (2015) - I went through a long period of watching this at one AM every night for weeks. Despite the tragic elements, I feel so happy when I watch the mermaid night club singers perform and then eat men’s hearts. The whole movie is like a patchwork quilt of styles and emotions but it never feels uneven and I love slipping into that crazy world and going along for the ride. It feels so natural to settle into the nuttiness. Also I have a mega crush on one of the lead actresses, so there’s that.
7. The Happy Prince (2018) - again despite the tragic elements, this is another one that I watched every one AM for weeks in order to fight loneliness and find solace in the presence of Oscar Wilde. I saw this in the theater and it was a transcendent experience. It’s visually gorgeous and written in a way that’s so stimulating to my mind without taxing me. I have loved Rupert Everett since I saw Another Country (1984) when I was about 15 and so seeing him give this most magisterial of performances is thrilling. It’s like swimming in beauty.
8. Rocketman (2019) - I saw this five times in the theater. Literally. Five. And I cried. I’m not even a particular Elton John fan although I do love all the songs they used, but the narrative of trying to find self-love without consistently sabotaging yourself is so relatable to me that I feel so connected to it. And of course the acting and music and dancing and costumes are so much fun. I always watch it in front of our biggish screen tv with the volume turned up high so I can pretend I’m in the theater. It’s both exciting and healing which is a potent combo.
9. My Own Private Idaho (1991) - god this is such a sad movie tbh but I feel like River Phoenix’s character is my best friend and I love spending time with him. He’s my favorite actor of all time and he is god tier levels of majestic pathos and gravitas in this. One of the best performances I have ever seen. Ever. I feel so close to his character who wants something so badly and is willing to literally take to the road to find it. It paradoxically shatters and heals me at the same time. Keanu Reeves is fun in it too and he and River are one of my favorite screen duos ever. I watch this every Halloween in memoriam of River.
Thanks Wooza ❤️ I tag literally all my followers. ☺
