“You did have an operation,” he clarified. “But, your heart wasn’t replaced. Instead, something was added.”

She felt like cold water was suddenly thrown upon her. The black and white X-ray crudely and intimately showed the most vulnerable and visceral organ. Atrophied, sickly.

as mai hands over the miso, y/n’s hand trembles slightly, but she manages to keep her smile in place. however, the sight and smell of the miso trigger a flood of memories from the night of the incident, making her stomach churn with nausea. she forces herself to take a small sip, all the while fighting the urge to bolt from the room.

meanwhile, satoru watches y/n closely, his keen intuition picking up on her unease. he exchanges a knowing glance with mai, who seems oblivious to the tension in the air. sensing an opportunity to stir the pot, mai subtly probes y/n with passive-aggressive remarks, each one like a needle pricking at an already tender wound.

y/n grits her teeth, her dislike for mai simmering just beneath the surface. every polite smile she forces feels like a betrayal of her true feelings. she longs to lash out, to expose mai for the manipulative snake she truly is, but she knows she must bide her time.

finally, as the last remnants of the feast were cleared away, you found yourself alone with mai while satoru had to take care of something to do with club issues. the confusing anger in you that stemmed from something that happened in the pass. with a deep breath, you steeled yourself to address the elephant in the room.

“mai, can we talk?” you asked her softly. mai’s attention was wavered for a moment by your question. “of course, y/n. what’s on your mind?”.

you hesitated, the word catching in your throat like thorns. how could you confront her without revealing your suspicions? was she secretly working with your ex to tear down your reputation more? “i…i just wanted to thank you for helping with the meal. it was delicious and it was very kind of you,”.

mai smiled, betraying her carefully planned facade. “it was my pleasure, y/n. anything for a friend,” she said while helping you clean the empty dishes and bringing them to the sink.

her words hung in the air, laden with unspoken truths and unaddressed tensions. as the conversation dwindled into an uneasy silence, you were left with more questions than answers. was mai hiding something? and what did she hope to gain from her elaborate charade? was she flirting with satoru- well i mean anyone would, right?

“never thought you would consider me as a friend, mai. i mean- don’t you remember what you used to tell people about me?” you tried to control your anger but it all decided to come out, harshly. “ you’re even lucky that we’ve been “friends” ever since we were 7. all those years, all the hatred you threw at me, the people you made turn against me for no fucking reason! sometimes i just wished we never met, i wished i was born in a different country, or for me to fucking die! ” you broke down in front of the dining table, sobbing hard with feeling of suicidal thoughts creeping up again.

mai was taken aback at the sudden exploding of your expressions.

“nobody, i tell you, fucking nobody ever gave two fucks about me, never! and then when you see satoru coming in my life you just want to steal him away from me? fucking bitch!”

satoru heard the commotion from the dining room from the living room and rushed to see what was going on. he saw that you were crouching in the floor, hugging your thighs with mai who just finished washing up the dishes. he rushed to your side and crouched to your level.

“s-she…lie! don’t believe her, sa-satoru..she’s a bitch!” your tears kept running while you hugged him. he was still puzzled, unknown about what just happened.

mai was lost for words at that point, seeing that satoru was taking your side more at the moment. however, you were right. she did torment you ever since you became friends with her. it wasn't the correct time to explain the entire story to him.

"i think you'd better go, mai. thanks for helping prepare dinner," satoru wished her goodbye, also trying not to hurt her feelings. mai simply rolled her eyes and walked out of your dorm, sunglasses and her purse in hand.

you were still sobbing on satoru's chest. it was all too much for you to handle. satoru brought you up and sat you on the sofa, leaving to gather more tissues to wipe your tears. he was the only one that understood your situation right now.

"sa-satoru..." you spoke, eyes bulging from the painful tears that stung. you were heaving, makeup bashed and hair in a mess. satoru never left your side and replied with, "yes, y/n?" in the sweetest, most soothing voice imaginable. he was the only one you could confide in with.

you stood up, heading towards the knife holder that was placed beside the sink. you took up the knife, examined how sharp it was and how it would end your life if only if you dared to pierce it through your neck. "how's it feel..you know, having the metallic blood flow right out of your flesh..."

satoru noticed this and grabbed you by the waist, bringing you away from the sink and all the dangerous kitchen utensils you might think of harming your life with.

"y/n! don't even think about it, you're not that desperate are you? this entire case will be solved and removed from the internet, i am very sure the authorities are on this case right now. please, don't even think about it.." satoru spoke to you in a soft voice.

satoru doesn't want another one of his friends to take their life away. not again.

"how'd you know?! you can never understand how detrimental this is to my life, satoru...all the job interviews that i have to face in the future thinking that they might have watched the leaked footage, i don't even know if it was my ex's or my own fault at this point. gosh, i'm so fucking stupid, i don't deserve to live..." you continuously wail and hit his chest with your balled fists and head.

satoru was quite speechless but all he could do at that point was to rub his hands on your back. the smell of his cologne sort of put you at ease after some time. all the crying tired you out, till you were just sobbing on his shoulder. "it's okay, y/n..we'll get through this together okay? i won't leave your side till this ends, you've got my promise..."

you weren't able to thank him as you just fell asleep on his shoulder. it was fortunate that the next day is the end of the week, hence no classes. satoru had mentally planned to take you out and away from campus in order for you to forget about the week and it's troubles.
