Also a random post about my thoughts on Goethe’s Faustopheles as a dynamic
As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I think their relationship is built on mutual jealousy.
Faust envies that Meph is able to comprehend the ultimate wisdom and grasp the universe, yet doesn’t use it or take it seriously
Meph envies that Faust still cares about things enough to feel strong emotions, has aspirations, yet doesn’t cherish those feelings, thinking of them as a cause of his suffering
Through the course of “Faust” Henry tries to study the world, while Meph tries to study Henry (both fail miserably but in different ways)
Faust goes to heaven not because of his understanding of the world, but because of a part of him that wanted to be a good person (this was neither his main priority nor an essential part of his character). He was never rewarded for his ambitions, they were just forgiven for his other qualities. I think heaven would just euthanize his brain into a constant state of bliss, so he wouldn’t wish for more.
Meph failed to understand Faust in time before he went to heaven, so he still can’t feel anything. To reassure himself that Faust totally wasn’t important to him and totally didn’t give him hope to have a more meaningful existence, Meph tries to find people similar to Faust to prove that they are fools and are not worthy of his attention (this is a set up to the plot of my “Master and Margarita” AU).

Day 16:
I am trying to make a Mephisto looking costume for my German class. Me and two friends are reciting part of Faust 1, Walpurgisnacht. It's horrible, honestly.
I cannot, for the life of me, remember my lines.
The first thing is him not wanting to walk, then he complains more about the lights and running into trees, then he bullies a will-o'-the-wisp into showing them the way through the Harz and then he talks about party. He's horrible, really (affectionate)

my conflicting feelings about part ii of goethe's faust amount to how on the one hand: i really hate how gretchen was treated by the narrative in the context of faust getting off scot-free, the actual plot of his deciding "i'm going to go back in time to fuck helen of troy" being ridiculous in a way that sort of makes you look into the camera like it's the office, and then the fact that wagner was never really expanded on as a foil to faust even though part i felt like it was setting up for that to happen.
on the other hand: i really do like goethe's characterization of helena. she's self-aware, cynical, and really, really funny with a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. and while the actual set-up to her relationship with faust feels like something out of an isekai anime, the actual chemistry and banter they have is so fun to watch. i'm someone who is very, very picky about how helen of troy in various interpretations of her story, and goethe's version of it really works for me.
#personal#goethe faust#@ lea: since you use 'hot faust summer' in reference to marlowe's version#maybe for goethe you could use 'deranged faust winter'?

I finished writing a second fic for my “The Master and Margarita” AU!!!
This AU combines Goethe’s Faust and M&M into one timeline and borrows a lot of themes from Fight Club.
You can expect a lot of manipulative demonic behavior, philosophical discussions and a little bit of physical violence :)
The illustration is a reference to a painting called “The Prophet” by Michael Alexandrovich Vrubel (which is in turn is inspired by a poem by the same name by Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin)
The first part:
The second part:
