It's over.

The final chapter of Mind in Madness, Heart in Peace (main story) has been posted! It was a beast of a chapter written during my time injured, and I have had my surgery and am currently recovering.

(Turns out, besides the dislocation and the torn ligament, I had a small fracture??? and some bone chipped off???)

2024 was wild.

Anyway, this has been an incredible ride, I'm so proud of this story, and this final chapter is featuring an artist I follow who I also love very much! Hope you guys enjoy it!

Chapter Summary: The aftermath.

FIC SUMMARY:

The Martial God of Death, Hua Cheng, ascended with little to no memory of his mortal life before godhood. What he did know was that he did it for…Someone. Someone so beloved and so ingrained in his heart that, even when he had lost all memory, he remembered he needed to look for them. Even without knowing who they were.

With his mission in mind, he made an agreement with Heaven to allow him to stay in the mortal realm to look for that Someone.

Except…he seems to have caught the eye of The Scourge of Heaven, the Lord of the Ghost City, and The Mad Calamity: Fangxin, the Crimson Sword Deathly Flower.

Or: A HuaLian Reverse!AU resulting from a very specific canon divergence point.

"Welcome back, San Lang," Xie Lian said, letting go of the vine he had been tugging at. Hua Cheng frowned; his hands were visibly scraped and bleeding. "I didn't think you'd really come. You didn't have to."

"I was curious about this god of yours," Hua Cheng replied, startled at the name for a second. He supposed he never really visited the mortals he gave a fake name to more than once, so he wasn't expecting to hear the name San Lang again.

Hua Cheng thought he caught a brief flash of white across the doorway before Xie Lian stepped back outside, extending a hand to invite Hua Cheng into the shrine.

"You said you have some questions for me? As shrine master, I should be able to answer them."

"Yes," Hua Cheng said, following him inside. "Your god, after he was banished, he didn't disappear, did he?"

He saw a flower that looked oddly familiar— although he couldn't place it— and was slightly translucent, almost like a spirit. He reached out to touch one of its petals lightly, and found he could feel it despite its appearance.

Glancing around, he found that the flower gave off a soft, faint glow. He took it in properly; it was the most beautiful flower he'd ever seen. Its petals were delicate, and although he was sure he'd never seen anything like it before, it still inexplicably reminded him of something.

(...But from how long ago? Was he missing another piece of his past, or was he just too old to remember something like this?)

some excerpts from chapter 3 of my god hc/calamity xl fic! I am very close to my goal of finishing chapter 3 so I can publish the story on ao3; it's been giving me a bit of trouble because I've had writer's block and this chapter is probably longer than all the other ones combined, but it's finally almost finished!

a note to people who may have been following the snippets of the story I have been posting: everything is subject to change in editing. in fact, I'm pretty sure every single excerpt I've posted here has been changed pretty heavily, with the chapter 2 extract being nearly completely rehauled because I didn't like it (...and it had some accidental plotholes).

anyways, I am very excited to publish this because it'll be my first published fic in quite a long time— and it will be my first tgcf fic! i hope everyone enjoys it, and even if you don't end up reading the real thing, I hope you've enjoyed the extracts so far <3

-xie lian feeling guilty about wu ming and trying to find the shattered soul pieces, leading him to mount tonglu

-wu ming, missing soul pieces and unable to descend from heaven

-xie lian gets trapped in the kiln. during this time, his feelings for wu ming fester and grow. (note: he doesnt die, so hes not a ghost.)

-wu ming names himself hua cheng, becoming the ghost of tonglu mountain and god of sacrifice

-jun wu... favors him??? because hua cheng's domain is, yknow, wuyong kingdom ruins. he doesnt connect hua cheng as wu ming. (maybe i should add spoilers to my things... whoops)

-xie lian becomes known as "black blade longing flower," as he is most characterized with his sword, fangxin, and he always stops for small white flowers in longing

-because of his missing soul pieces, hua cheng is unable to figure out what he lives for—only knowing that it's something he would kill himself for

-xie lian decides to create ghost paradise as a lure for wu ming's missing soul pieces, although he'd never admit it

-hua cheng is technically a calamity. his domain is tonglu mountain, after all—so he looks alive and shapeshifts excellently. due to an... incident, concerning said shapeshifting, he becomes known as the god of luck and fortune.

-xie lian gets into more trouble. his misfortune paired with ghost paradise... not the best. somehow, he becomes feared by heaven — defeating many gods and demons who come across him

-hua cheng is sent to investigate as a strong martial god and ghost. after sealing his divine power, he transforms into the form he held before ascending, thinking nothing of it. something was missing, so he put on a mask he had found a while ago—crescent eyes, smiling.

-xie lian is told from one of his servants about hua cheng's arrival; after all, he has instructed them to inform him if they ever see a ghost with the mask on, and black hair.

-hua cheng... is confused. he isnt particularly attached to ghosts (not even himself), but ghost paradise makes him feel as if he were home.

-xie lian doesn't want to lose wu ming so he kidnaps him. bet you didnt expect that! unfortunately, he lacks the foresight to, yknow, give wu ming the rest of his soul back.

-hua cheng, for some reason, doesnt want to fight back nor escape. heaven is scrambling to gather those willing to fight the calamity and find the missing god.

-xie lian is delighted, although finds that the ghost is missing some memories. he assumes its heaven's fault, once again forgetting that he has his missing soul pieces

-hua cheng cant help but feel that this is what he's been living for. locked heavily in a fancy, larger-than-large room, he feels content knowing that xie lian is there.

-xie lian fights off the gods that come for hua cheng when mount tonglu starts it's pulse. it doesnt have much of an affect on xie lian. hua cheng, however, feels the ghost arousal.

-hua cheng seals his ghost power, and with the seal on his divinity, he's particularly weak. he starts easing the seal on the divine powers, hoping not to alert his captor. for some reason, he feels guilty for his godhood.

-xie lian eventually notices, walking into the room hua cheng was sealed in. he feels... hateful? disappointed? happy? heaven had a grasp on his wu ming, but his wu ming had achieved something grand.

-hua cheng escapes, one day, due to his luck. it doesn't feel right, but he looks for the exit; he should go back to his territory. he finds a grand bedroom, and in a porcelain jar, the rest of his soul laid.

-xie lian is in a panic. wu ming? where was his wu ming? he scrambles around his empty manor, following the meagre traces of wu ming. he stops at the doorway of his bedroom. wu ming was reconnecting with the rest of his soul. what a fool xie lian was. how could he keep wu ming in pieces? he deserved to be whole.

-hua cheng is overwhelmed, losing his grip on both seals as he became whole. he falls into a daze, where all he wants, all he needs is dianxia.

-xie lian finds himself with an armful of wu ming, desperate for him. it's as if it came from a long-buried fantasy. wrapping his arms around wu ming, carefully bathing him and combing his hair... he had what he wanted. (he wanted more)

AND CLIFFHANGER!!! just watched deadpool&wolverine ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯ not feeling the hualian vibes rn

Fate Swap AU

Martial God of the former kingdom of Xianle, Hua Cheng and White No Face calamity, Xie Lian

An AU in which instead of dying on the battlefield, Honghong-er was willing to sacrifice his life to protect the crown prince. He ascended while Xie Lian had been banished. However, when Xie Lian's parents died, he successfully took his own life and ended up a ghost, willing to take White No Face's side. White No Face had no clue Xie Lian, his own successor, would be the end of him, while Hua Cheng searched for over 800 years to try and find the lost love that he always blamed himself for losing.

I tried my best here.

Though you feel an overwhelming sense of divinity coming from this being, but it... conflicts somehow. This thing is divine and yet unholy. A living paradox.

Its body is mostly brown, but it is covered in cracks that expose a glowing yellow core. Two great bundles of sharp crystal emerge from its shoulders, behind which lay two great holes that spew some kind of semi-holy energy. Four bursts of flame meant to imitate wings sprout from its back. Its limbs and tail appear to be made of driftwood that somehow moves like muscle. It has no mouth, with the only features on its face being its piercing yellow eyes.

It has no breath weapon, for it does not need one. Its surroundings burst into holy flames all the same.
