Tuesday 10 April 1838: SH:7/ML/E/21/0074
7 25
12 10
finish morning – high wind – F41° at 8 40 – somehow I think more of A- than she deserves I wish I was well rid of her – Looking into Backwell and De la Beche (Geology) till 9 – then breakfast and sat downstairs talking till 10 – soon afterwards sat down at my desk and wrote 3pp. and under seal (of ½ sheet) to Lady S. de R- and wrote over again (to date my letter today) what I wrote to Lady S- on Sunday writing it now in 4pp. of ½ sheet and 1 p. of envelope – then wrote 4pp. (letter paper) to Lady V.C- chitchat to Lady S- and thanks for her letter and congratulations on the birth of the little Sibbella – delighted and exulting to have waited till practice has made perfect that my Sibbella may not be behindhand with the little people her predecessors – Lady S- writes ‘tho a daughter she is the finest child she has’ – offer to put myself at Lady S-‘s disposal for 2 or 3 weeks anytime after the end of this month – shall want only my maid – will send my carriage to the coach maker to have what done may be necessary for a longer journey and will send my manservant home – wrote the substance of all this to Lady S. de R- adding that a very unexpected circumstance but not  a windfall had upset my plans and that I now thought I should not be able to get quite off before near or after Xmas – wrote congratulations to Lady V.C- hope she did not feel the effects of her fall (just before her confinement) beyond the moment – mention having purchased the 2 books she recommended (Combe and Dr. Birgham) ‘much for us all to profit by, especially your mothers, whose olive-branches spring up, and thrive so pleasurably’ – ‘Surely you will condole with me on my being still here – I had arranged a plan of northern tour, and fixed the day for being in London; but a very unexpected circumstance upset my schemes once more; and I am waiting as patiently as I can – But I shall never go far without telling you – at this moment, I fear I cannot be absent for long together of some months to come – nous verrons – but I think I could manage a short while, and have just written to dear Lady Stuart, and offered to put myself at her disposal for 2 or 3 weeks’ then mention Breadalbanes’ asking my subscription to Mr. Robertsons’ work of travels and her ‘alluding with regret to his having published some foolish history of the Mclean family – of this I, of course, took no notice, as I really knew nothing about it – but considered Breadalbane’s request a sufficient reason for my taking two copies – she told me, too, of York being thought of as a place of residence for the Hugh Macleans, and that she herself, and the premier-lit girls were to spend the summer at her cottage, and talked of living together – why York for the Hugh Macleans? Is any part of England particularly cheap? Give a kiss for me to my little Sibbella, and to little Louisa, too, who behaved so beautifully at Leamington, and believe me always affectionately yours A. Lister’ – at 1 40 had just written so far of today and copied my letter to Lady S. de R- - then A- came to me all in the dolefuls about a handkerchief frill tried to get her right she had been very hardly used twice by me and now by her aunt  never thought of going to Cliff hill as she had done   could not bear    when she came here thought of going abroad and when I said I had offered her to go away to any friends or do anything I could she said she did not like to go with my servants  I said she had the whole management    I said I had nobody to advise with might I write to her sister  no it would be very hard  well said if I could but have my own way I should not fear  indeed but she did not like to be an automation I was very calm and quiet and said by and by she must forgive me if I did not forget the word automation I would not break her heart nor use her hardly nor make her an automaton  these things could be easily settled but every sensible kept up appearances as well as they could – she sat all the while on my knee  I begrudged the time and said I must seal my letters and go out she had before declined reading them she now said as she had waited so long she might as well read them her curiosity got the bette[r]  she made no remark nor did I – I hope I shall be rid of her by and by had I not be better remain a little with Lady Stuart if I can with any comfort? – at least I had best not return to A- sealed my letters (A- with me till 2 40) and wrote the last 17 lines till 3 – then in about ¾ hour wrote 3 pp. and ends to M- ‘Shibden hall. Tuesday 10  April 1838. It pothers me, my dearest Mary, to see amid my
SH:7/ML/E/21/0075
heap of unanswered letters one from you received Tuesday 27 February’ six weeks ago – not long compared with the term of my delinquencies to many other people, but longer than my custom is to youwards [towards you]– I let you take your own time, of late generally eked out to many weeks; but it is never my intention to let my pen be dilatorily to you, and I think it seldom is so, in fact – one reason of my waiting, I meant my date to have been from elsewhere – all was arranged and the day fixed for our begin off, when a very unexpected circumstance upset all; and here we are, and are likely to be off, at this moment, I cannot guess how much longer – I do not pretend to enter into any sort of explanation on paper – it would be too tiresome to say, or, rather to write, more than that poor Mrs. Walker imagines herself within some short while of that bourne from which no traveller returns; and we are lookers on – if you chance to come this way, you will, of course, come and see us – if not, you will take it for granted, as I do, that ‘all things work together for good’ ..... glad to hear so good an account of her mother no wonder at M-‘s bad cold..... ‘when is Lawton to be finished? your comfort is at stake; and therefore I am anxious for the completion – as far as Shibden is concerned, I have got over all impatience – my care about the finishing is reduced is reduced to very comfortable dimensions – I am so engrossed with other things, I have little time for musing about my house – but, I do assure you, I seriously meditate making my escape by and by – your account of Mr. Lawton is so excellent, it seems as if he, like many others who have been ailing for many years, may survive many of the stronger and junior ones of our day – what you allude to, may, with his own common care, be of little nuisance or danger – I cannot help hoping you might slip away for 5 or 6 weeks well enough, if such should be recommended by your own inclination, and more especially by your medical advisers – I have not time to run into the minutiae of Rhine expense – my rough calculation was 25fr. ie. one pound English sterling per day – taking very little luggage – no servant (you and Mrs. M- would not want one) and travelling by steam – the fares are very moderate – I dare not say I myself ever travelled exactly at this rate; but I know that it has been done – there is no difficulty or disparagement in dining for 3fr. having breakfast and supper for 3fr. and bed for 2fr. = 8fr. and one fr. for the servants will suffice, leaving 16fr. out of the 25fr. for steaming and etc. quite enough si les voyageurs le veulent – It is travelling en milord that is expensive – 4 horses and 2 postboys not only entail your own expense but double everything else’ – as M- regrets gently leaving Leamington ‘I abate my own sorrow – I still however wish you well backed out of all your scholastic troubles’ – conclude she is still at Moreton – no doubt I should much approve all your alterations – your description vivâ voce would be more agreeable than any other means of bringing them before me, except in situ – I hope the prince with a long name has along enough purse’........who has just married Mr. W. Crewes’ cousin – ‘Perhaps  you are busier than I – it may be so – but it does not take long to write me enough to inform me how you are, and where you are – However, I am always satisfied – come what may, there ought to be a never failing spring of happiness within us all – as touching those I am interested about, I always believe all right, till I am credibly informed to the contrary – I anticipate no [disagrees] – I dream but little – yet the little is carefully selected from what is pleasantest – I never saw any good in moody musings – God bless you Mary! you or your letters will find me here, and always faithfully and affectionately yours AL’ – at 4 10 had just written the last line of p. 137, the whole of the last p. and so far of this – then sealed my letter to ‘Mrs. Lawton hall, Lawton, Cheshire’ and left also ready for the bad tonight my letter to ‘the honourable Lady Stuart Whitehall’ and to ‘The Lady Stuart de Rothesay undercover to ‘Lord Stuart de Rothesay, Carlton terrace, London’ and my letter to ‘The Lady Vere Cameron Achnacarry Fort William Invernesshire’ went out at 4 20 – a few minutes with Robert Mann + 5 levelling at the meer in the morning and in the afternoon in the garden George Naylors’ horses carting clay from the flower garden to the great sycamore, and my own cart bringing clay from the Laundry road side to cover over the turret passage – the 2 teams carts in the morning bringing necessary stuff from Hx- on to the land – then to Listerwick pit walked there with Joseph Mann – told him the engine would be a £700 business – I had no choice – I must either let the colliery or settle about it someway – then to John Oates – laid up with an inflammation in his right hand and about the wrist – Mr. Swallow came and I went out while he was there – then returned and was an hour at John’s told him about the engine – he still inclines to an endless chain – and thinks the engine will cost little more working their ginning with horses would have done for 2 horses could hardly have done the work – said what I had said to Holt about knowing what the coal would make me clean per acre – said I only wanted £150 per acre for the coal (very fair said John) and 10pc. on outlay – but this would be near £6000 – say £5500 at the least – say 3 acres per annum £450 + £550 = £1000 – John thought it could not clean so much – but said he thought it really would clear me £300 per acre - .:. if 4 acres – could be sold per annum it would pay – there will be a deal of straight work but this will leave something – In fact, John says, I must go on now – and only wait a little and the Dove house coal will be bought reasonably and then I can go on without incurring any more expense in looses as long as I live – John says he thinks we can sell 3 acres if the coal is as good as that got at [Ship] Inn pit, the quality will sell – none like it hereabouts – well! I must go on, and if I can weather out [of] the storm a little longer perhaps I shall do pretty well at last – I think I can manage – at all rates, I will not despair – came in at 6 ¾ - gave A- my letter to M- to read – went into the cellar – 1 port 1 marsala – dinner at 7 10 – A- poorly – could not see Joseph Mann who came at 8 about Landymere – went to bed at 8 ½ - I made my own coffee and sat reading
SH:7/ML/E/21/0076
the h-x Guardian till 10 ½ - then 5 minutes in the west tower – the cupboard above the stairs ceiling put up – then wrote the last 25 lines till now 10 55 pm at which hour F50° finish afternoon and evening dampish in the morning with highish wind – and whistling wind tonight – I looked very grave at dinner A- had a headache temper-sick so I let her go off to bed and have taken no notice  I must be rid of her be it as it may hear bad temper vulgar pride and littleness of mind   would be an insupportable drag upon me for the rest of my life – surely I shall get some way I dread the loneliness most but heaven will provide me even against this in some way  had A- been barely tolerable I could have go ton perhaps I am obliged to her aunt for making me this opportunity of getting off does A- suspect my thought of not returning to her?  cunning and suspicious as she is does she think that I hope not to trouble her long? – had Booth tonight till near 7 – told him JO. was still for the endless chair – that Garforth was to send plans of with and without; and we would all meet at John Oates’s at 3pm on Friday instead of here – has A- thought much of losing the forget-me-not ring I gave her? then read Bakewells’ geology for 10 minutes till 11 35

The Prince of Wales to the Queen
Carlton House, 31 May 1796
There is no step in life that ever can be taken by me without my wishing that you should be acquainted with it. It is therefore that I trouble you with these few lines to tell you that I have written to the King to inform him of the step I have at last been obliged to determine upon, owing to the impracticable temper of the Princess. You have known too well the misery I have suffer’d for this year past to be surpriz’d at anything I may be driven to, but it is not in nature to bear the wretchedness any longer. You, my sisters, & the whole of us are so run at by these practices that it becomes indispensably necessary for the truth to be known. It adds to the poignant grief which tears me to peices to be oblig’d to apply to the dear King upon any subject that can agitate or vex him. You know how I have sacrificed myself for him once, & I cannot do it further but at the expense of what he never would forgive himself for allowing, the total loss of tranquility & happiness for the rest of my days. Pray explain to the King my reasons for leaving town, but I am really quite unable to bear seeing anybody till things are finally arrang’d & my mind gets a little repose. God bless you, my ever dearest mother. I say no more, & I suppose the King will of course shew you the contents of my letter.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm........ give me stuff about your Charlie, please..........
she’s a bicon (bi icon) and proud! she’s dating carlton. (no surprise there given my posts huhh)
she’s qpps with john! (bless andy for this hc i refuse to let it go)
she likes to act like she’s the voice of reason in the group, but most of the time she really, REALLY isn’t. she’s a chaotic mess.
she has a twin sister - sammy! (sammy is a trans girl :]) sammy is just barely older, and my god she holds it over charlie’s head. charlie HATES it.
her favorite animatronics are the freddys! fredbear has a special place in her heart due to her dad.
she can draw! she has a lot of drawings of the freddy’s animatronics.
she ends up moving in with carlton and his family, as she does end up moving back into town, and she doesn’t exactly have the money to consistently live by herself.
1v1 her in any fighting game. do it. she’ll beat your ass. SHE’LL. BEAT. YOUR. ASS.
sorry for so much carlton/charlie stuff but carlton once won a giant teddy bear for charlie at an arcade and charlie absolutely cherishes it. it’s a big comfort item for her......
she’s clumsy as fuck, but tries to be cool about it. trips? she meant to do that. stumbles? try to play it off. all’s good. she’s cool.
she has a fear of animatronics to some degree, but more specifically the endosekeltons. she can’t look at the endoskeletons for too long without getting panicky.
CAN, AND WILL, BEAT WILLIAM AFTON UP.

Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Easter Egg and Reference Guide
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The following contains spoilers for Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
As fun as 2017’s Psych: The Movie was, its 2020 sequel Psych 2: Lassie Come Home will likely supplant it in Psych-Os’ hearts, because it’s got 500% more Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). But how does it stack up to its predecessor in terms of Psych callbacks and pop culture homages? Using our Spencer powers of observation, we’ve tried to catch every recurring inside joke between Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dulé Hill), plus all the episodic-specific bits. It’s a feature-length Hitchcock homage, but it’s also the toughest Easter egg hunt of your life. C’mon, son!
Psych 2: Lassie Come Home Easter Eggs and References
The title is a reference to Lassie Come Home, the 1943 Lassie movie about the beloved dog making her way home from Scotland. A German-language remake came out early in 2020.
It’s always a treat to hear the Psych theme song “I Know, You Know,” performed by creator Steve Franks and his band The Friendly Indians.
Lassiter wakes up to Shawn and Gus hovering above him at the recovery clinic is a throwback to when they kidnapped him for his bachelor party in “Deez Nups” and he came to with them screaming “Surpriiise!”
Morrissey the rescue dog reprises his role from Psych: The Movie in being adorable, incredibly nosy, and oblivious to Shawn’s hissing commands.
Sarah Chalke’s nurse character Dolores is most likely a nod to San Francisco’s Mission Dolores church and cemetery, the location for Carlotta Valdes’ grave in Vertigo.
Right out the gate, Dolores is treated to the requisite Gus nickname: “My name is Shawn Spencer, and this is my partner Bill Poopingtons.” However, Shawn and Gus take a sidebar for a very meta argument about their ongoing bit (while fitting in another bit):
“Gus, don’t be the night your dad fell asleep inside your mom. We can’t just stop doing bits we’ve been doing for ten years. We have fans, they have expectations, there’ll be a huge backlash.”
“Shawn, we are two dumbasses, we do not have fans.”
Compromise: Gus gets right of refusal until they land on a nickname he prefers. And so:
Bill Poopingtons > All the Pips in One
Ding-Dong Ditch > Claude O’Dern > Big Poppa Pump > Lemon-a Lemon-a Lemon-a Liiime
Leggo My Eggo > Norman Brown Butter > Dijon Hounsou
Gus also calls himself Jermajesty, channeling some Jackson Five energy.
“Black Jello” was Gus’ nickname in their adult dodgeball league.
The Herschel House is likely a nod to Herschel Daugherty, who directed over two dozen episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents…
Gus and Shawn are still bickering over driving the drivers ed car, even if we don’t see it in the movie. They do manage to be just as bad at turning the right direction when riding a motorcycle together.
“Now I know this ‘goofy little white guy/sexy black dude’ routine the two of you have going like the back of my scrubs.” Sarah Chalke played Elliot on Scrubs, whose JD/Turk bromance walked so that Shawn/Gus could run.
Shawn calls Dolores “the nurse from Color of Night,” the 1994 Bruce Willis erotic mystery thriller that won a Golden Raspberry for Worst Picture.
The boys get Jamba Juice because you never turn down an opportunity for a Jamba.
Shawn likens Gus’ pubic hair to Eddie Murphy’s mustache in his 1987 stand-up film Raw.
Shawn offers the dismembered hand to Gus to “knuck it up softly,” per their penchant for fist-bumping.
They later do fist-bump outside the old Psych offices, but not before channeling Han Solo and Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: “Gus, we’re home.” “[Wookiee sound]”
Psych has become a French-themed cat café… for now, at least. It’s not an alternative universe from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but the current subletter’s pop-up business. The proprietor (not the girl from Orphan) is played by Allison Miller, James Roday Rodriguez’s co-star in A Million Little Things.
“I am a psychic. He is a sympathetic pooper.” Poor Gus’ intestinal system gets called out again.
Henry’s (Corbin Bernsen) put-on voice gets compared to Tom Waits, Kathleen Turner, Harvey Fierstein, and Diedrich Bader.
Shawn neglected to tell his landlord that he’d moved, which tracks with his behavior in the series finale “The Break-Up.”
Henry reveals that in addition to telenovelas, he enjoys zeitgeist-y sobfests: “You left behind a slow cooker with a three-pound roast in it. You nearly This Is Us-ed the entire block.”
“This Is Us—Dad, why are you watching that show? They have the same show on ABC but newer”: Shawn’s shoutout to A Million Little Things.
Lassiter mistakes Reese Kessler, his supposed shooter, for country music singer Conway Twitty.
Lassiter’s to-do list includes “tape Galavant,” the short-lived musical comedy fantasy series created by Dan Fogelman (This Is Us), in which Timothy Omundson played King Richard. It also includes items poking fun at Lassiter’s crankiness (“yell at nature,” “chirping bird d-day plan”) and tenacity (“solve black dahlia”), and heartstring-tugging items (“pre-register for ironman” as in the triathlon). He also has written down Shawn’s S.E.I.Z.E. mantra from his short-lived career as Lassiter’s life coach in “S.E.I.Z.E. the Day”: Seize Eggs I don’t know Zebra Eighties.
Juliet (Maggie Lawson) lying to Shawn sounds strange, though not as strange as Lupita Nyong’o—the Tethered Lupita—in Jordan Peele’s Us.
Shawn’s “romantic dinner” for Jules is the menu from A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (jelly beans, pretzels, buttered toast, popcorn, and ice cream sundaes) because it’s all they had at the gas station on the way home.
That prompts an iconic “C’mon, son!” from Gus.
Gus’ ringtone is “I’m Mr. Bootyman,” which is both Henry’s ringtone and the song featured in Buzz McNab’s bachelorette party stripper routine in “Deez Nups.”
Gus’ (technically Jules’) green snuggie bears a striking resemblance to official Psych contest merch.
Lassiter spotting mysterious bleeding figures out his window is an homage to Rear Window.
Richard Schiff (as Dr. Herschel) was Dulé Hill’s co-star in The West Wing.
Potterhead Gus wants to know if there are any people hiding in the pipes of the Herschel House, “speaking in their own tongue, perhaps Parsel.”
The Psych boys’ map of suspects briefly includes the Hell Hag from Gus’ dreams in “A Nightmare on State Street.”
Shawn has only been to Norway once with his brother-in-law Ewan O’Hara (John Cena), but they don’t talk about that… Maybe that’s where Psych: The Movie went after its cliffhanger ending?
Ova’s Norwegian song/chant toast at the Viking’s Ice Den is very similar to the Swedish toast in “Right Turn or Left for Dead.”
Ova’s violent son Per is first described as “the bearded Daryl Hannah.”
Shawn’s excuse to Detective Buzz McNab (Sage Brocklebank) for being in Santa Barbara is that he forgot a frisbee signed by German writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
Shawn’s first reaction to Jules potentially being pregnant: “You know the windows in the loft don’t even fully close, right? I’m gonna have to replace them, otherwise this is Baby’s Day Out all over again.” As Gus reassures him, he always did get worked up over John Hughes’ worst idea.
At the old Psych offices, Shawn pulls out the jousting lance from “100 Clues”—as well as a pineapple! He looks about to ask, “Should we cut this up for the road?” (his question during the pineapple’s first appearance in the pilot, plus at the end of Psych: The Movie) but stops himself.
When Lassie believes that fellow patient Mr. Wilkerson (Kadeem Hardison) has been walking around, Shawn and Gus have to go “full Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” to interrogate the supposedly catatonic patient.
Shoutout to Jessie Spano’s infamous “I’m so excited, I’m so excited, I’m so scared!” speed speech from Saved by the Bell.
If it’s not Scrubs, the boys are getting compared to Ren and Stimpy.
Mary Lightly (Jimmi Simpson) returns in another incredible, extra-hallucinatory look into Shawn’s brain… this time as a baby, since Shawn’s got fatherhood on the brain.
“We got jackaled!” Gus shouts upon learning that Wilkerson can walk—a reference to “hitting the jackal switch,” or going into stealth mode.
Shawn has always had a thing for singer Jewel, even after the Civil War movie (1999’s Ride with the Devil) and the Bollywood song.
Of course there’s a nasty dance when Shawn and Gus figure out who they think is behind everything.
Gus declares that “I am not going to let you shoot Shules’ baby!” only for the Chief (Kirsten Nelson) to ask, “What’s a Shules?” That’s the fans’ name for Shawn/Jules, a cute nod to a series OTP.
And of course, we can’t forget the fact that Jazmyn Simon, who plays Selene, is Dulé Hill’s real-life wife.
More than once, Shawn quotes The Handmaid’s Tale in reference to Gus and Selene’s baby: “Praise be” and “Blessed is the fruit.”
Dolores compliments Lassiter’s “chest of hair plentiful enough to wake all of Destiny’s Child.”
Shawn comes up with possible names for Gus’ child: Shaft, Shaftie, or D’Shaft—just like Gus’ nickname Sh’Dynasty (with a “God’s comma,” or apostrophe) from “Santabarbaratown.”
They also both coo “c’mon son” to Selene’s womb.
Selene’s proposal to Gus includes his negotiation that he and Shawn have adjacent homes with connecting pools, a callback to Shawn and Gus talking about their dream setup in “The Break-Up”; as well as Pluto! She asks, “Will you make me the happiest woman on this planet, on Eres, and Pluto?”
Shawn tells Juliet that “you’re my person,” the iconic Grey’s Anatomy line (though one would argue that Gus more accurately is his person).
When Lassiter stands (shut up, you’re crying) to meet Marlowe (Kristy Swanson), they place their palms together—like they did when he would visit her in jail, like they did at their wedding. My heart.

Papal Primacy, Ecumenism, and Orthodox Tradition
On October 21, 1997, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople, not generally known for being radically anti-Western, sought to explain the nature of the rupture between East and West. After forty years of official participation in the ecumenical movement by the Roman Catholic Church, early hopes about a swift restoration of communion had generally been tempered, and questions had arisen about what conditions undergirded the apparent lack of progress. The Ecumenical Patriarch denied that the problem was merely one of “organizational structures” or “jurisdictional arrangements.” The question, that is, was not simply a superficial question about the particular powers that the bishop of Rome would have vis-à-vis the Christian East. These questions, the Patriarch suggested, were indicative of something deeper: in a millennium of separation, “the manner in which we exist has become ontologically different.” In order to have any potential for lasting success, a restoration of communion demanded a “transfiguration and transformation towards one common model of life.”[1] It will be argued that such a common model of life can be found in the recognition of the absolute mutual complementary of primacy and collegiality as well as the authentically petrine and jurisdictional character of the Roman universal primacy. Nevertheless, given the catholic character of apostolic tradition, it will be seen that the specific manner in which this primacy is defined by the First Vatican Council is incompatible with any legitimate reintegration of Christian life.
In order to demonstrate these theses, I will attempt to isolate which aspects of current Roman Catholic teaching on the papacy constitute actual barriers to the restoration of communion. Then, I will examine the historical evidence in order to lay the foundation for an alternative conception of primacy in the Church, focusing especially on the evidence of ecumenical councils acknowledged as common authorities by Orthodox and Catholics alike. In order to do this successfully, one must first understand the nature of the tradition to which all apostolic Christians[2] profess allegiance. In understanding the nature of tradition more deeply, one can probe particular dogmatic claims and assess their relationship to that tradition.
In order to understand the way in which papal primacy operates in a contemporary context, it is important to distinguish between the primacy as it is manifested prudentially and the primacy as it is understood dogmatically. The conflation of these two modes of understanding can create ambiguity about the actual conditions for unity and impede the path towards clear and productive dialogue. In his famous Ut Unum Sint, Pope John Paul II invited Christian theologians of other traditions “to engage with me in a patient and fraternal dialogue on [the exercise of the primacy]”[3] while acknowledging that certain actions of the popes in the past had contributed to the rupture. As important as this call genuinely is, its significance can be overstated. In the process of arguing that there really are no significant theological reasons for the ongoing separation, David Bentley Hart interpreted the pope’s words as opening up the question of the “pope’s ecclesial jurisdiction.”[4] While this is true after a manner of speaking, it seems to me that the really significant question concerns the question of whether it is possible, within the constraints of current Catholic dogma, to place a concrete limit on papal jurisdiction or whether such limitations are solely self imposed. The Catholic doctrine of papal primacy is articulated with great specificity in Vatican I’s Pastor Aeturnus and Vatican II’s Lumen Gentium.[5]. The ongoing doctrinal relevance of these statements and their continuing standing as infallible statements having the authority of the extraordinary magisterium are illustrated in the lukewarm response of the Roman Church to the so-called Zoghby Initiative, a proposal for Eastern Catholics to restore communion with the Orthodox while retaining communion with Rome.
Of particular significance is the profession of “all that Eastern Orthodoxy teaches” and “limits” upon the Bishop of Rome’s primatial ministry set by the “Holy Fathers of the East” before the separation. A formal papal response to this proposal came in an official document issued by the Congregation for the Eastern Churches authored principally by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger. Citing the aforementioned statement of John Paul II, Ratzinger referred to alterations in the exercise of the petrine office as an issue “distinct from that of doctrine” and describing complete identity of faith between Orthodox and Catholics as “not possible” because the “doctrine relating to the primacy of the Roman Pontiff has been the subject of some development within the elaboration of the Church's faith through the ages, and…must thus be upheld in its entirety from its origins all the way to the present day”, again making reference to the dogmatic statements of Vatican I and II.[6]
Pastor Aeturnus defines the character of papal primacy both in terms of its basis and in terms of its extent. The basis of papal jurisdiction is defined exclusively with reference to its petrine character. The Council thus states that “the primacy of jurisdiction over the universal Church of God was immediately and directly promised and given to Blessed Peter”[7] and anathematizes any person who states that this jurisdiction “is not ordinary and immediate, both over each and all the Churches and over each and all the Pastors and the faithful…”[8] This definition is reiterated in the Second Vatican Council, where the papal “power of primacy over all, both pastors and faithful, remains whole and intact.” Most importantly, while the pope is “always free to exercise this power”, the collegial power of jurisdiction cannot be exercised “without [their] head.”[9] More important than the universal character of papal jurisdiction- a power which is subject to different interpretations- is the ordinary and immediate character attributed to papal jurisdiction. In stating that the power of jurisdiction is “over each and all the Pastors and the faithful”, the Council precisely specifies its immediate relation to each particular Christian. That is, in principle, a pope can decide, with absolute finality, the ecclesial status of any person within his communion- needing the cooperation or consent neither of their local bishop or synod. Moreover, these particular prerogatives are intrinsic to the office whose existence is derived from the pope’s manner of succession from the apostle Peter. That is, the pope’s being the successor of Peter is both necessary and sufficient[10] for his having ordinary, immediate, and universal jurisdiction over all Christians.
These statements present themselves as reiterations of the content of tradition and should be evaluated by that criterion. While the development of Christian doctrine is certainly a reality, one must make the crucial distinction between development on the one hand and evolution on the other. In Pascendi Dominici, for example, Pope Pius X condemns the idea that dogma evolves while leaving open the possibility of doctrinal development. A doctrine can be said to develop where the truths professed explicitly in later formulations are logically implied by earlier formulations. Because of this, one cannot say that a doctrine has developed from earlier formulations where the earlier confessions explicitly contradict the later ones. An idea cannot be implicit where it is denied explicitly.
According to Pastor Aeturnus, its definition of papal primacy has been “ever been understood by the Catholic Church…”[11] More specifically, its definitions are described as having emerged from the confirmation of the “perpetual practice of the Church…and Ecumenical Councils…especially those in which the East with the West met in the union of faith and charity.”[12] The citation of the evidence of the East is key, as it roots the legitimacy of this vision of papal primacy in its universal, catholic character. Such an idea is also echoed in Leo XIII’s encyclical Satis Cognitum, where the origin of the doctrine of the primacy is described in words  echoing the Vincentian canon: the profession “not by one nation only nor in one age, but by the East and by the West, and through all ages.”[13] The pressing question for the modern ecumenist, therefore, is the degree to which these doctrines, specifically defined, pass the bar set by St. Vincent himself. The authentic Catholic is to “to cleave to antiquity, which at this day cannot possibly be seduced by any fraud of novelty.”[14] Where such exists, one must “prefer the decrees…of an ancient General Council…” If such a decree does not exist, one must “collate and consult and interrogate the opinions of the ancients, of those, namely, who, though living in various times and places…stand forth acknowledged and approved authorities.”[15]
Before examining Roman Catholic teaching on primacy in light of these criteria, it is important to first qualify that there are certain contemporary Orthodox statements on primacy which fail catastrophically to meet these qualifications. These are often, though not always, found in an apologetic context. When the “Orthodox position” is compared with the above teaching, it is natural for the historically informed inquirer to reject the Orthodox claim to bear this living tradition out of hand. For example, Clark Carlton entirely denies a “primacy of jurisdiction” to the Church of Rome,[16] interpreting the phrase “primacy of honor” as signifying a mere ceremonial primacy. Similarly, Orthodox apologist Michael Whelton states that “the Orthodox Church has always maintained…that the Early Church saw no theological basis in Matthew 16:18-19 to support the claims of Rome…”[17] Such claims are absurdly easy to refute, and Carlton’s statement that by the mid-fifth century the Church of Rome was articulating a doctrine of the Church fundamentally at odds with orthodox Christian teaching[18] makes disingenuous any claim of the Orthodox Church to represent the catholic tradition of the Holy Fathers of East and West. Unfortunately, claims like this are not limited to popular apologetic work. In its formal response to the Ravenna Document on primacy, the Moscow Patriarchate asserted that “has never been a single administrative center on the universal level” and that any universal primacy that did exist “is instituted not by God but men.”[19] Even read charitably, such statements are profoundly selective and cannot be seriously set forth as a basis for full communion.
If one is to find a more serious proposal for what a reintegrated Church would look like from an Orthodox perspective, one must turn to the time when such a reintegration was attempted with real seriousness. While there were two attempted reunion Councils between East and West, the Second Council of Lyons lacked participation from major Orthodox centers and was essentially a formalization of the emperor’s personal confession of faith.[20] A more serious attempt was made two centuries later, at the Council of Florence. While the formulae of union themselves were ultimately rejected, St. Mark of Ephesus, since canonized as one of the three “Pillars of Orthodoxy” might be considered something of a canonical articulation of a vision for genuine unity with the West. Mark’s contribution to a theology of primacy is especially pertinent because of the intra-Western disputes about ecclesiology that were transpiring at the time of the Council. Surprisingly given certain historical constructions of St. Mark, he criticized the Latin conciliarists because of their “denial [of] the essential role of the pope in the function and approval of acts and decrees of an ecumenical council.”[21] Nevertheless, Mark limited papal authority by holding that he, like the other patriarchs, was bound by the decrees of such councils, without having the exclusive prerogative to reinterpret their teaching. Because of this, Christiaan Kappes refers to Mark’s theology of primacy as a “mitigated papalism” avoiding the extremes of both ultramontanism which placed no limits on papal power and conciliarism which had no need for it.[22]
Mark is not the only medieval Byzantine theologian to speak of the papal office in such ways. In the decades leading up to the Council of Florence, for example, Symeon of Thessaloniki criticized certain polemics which had dismissed any kind of papal prerogative, writing that “when the Latins say that the bishop of Rome is first, there is no need to contradict them...[if] he has the same faith as Peter and his successors...then he will be the first, the chief and head of all, the supreme high priest.”[23] Even as there were other, lower views of papal power in medieval Byzantium, passages like these demonstrate that profession of a real headship among the Churches based, in part, on succession from Peter was not held to be incompatible with Orthodox faith and was hardly the exclusive belief of the Latinophrone party. Consequently, demonstrating the catholic character of some kind of papal primacy and petrine ministry is not sufficient to demonstrate the apostolicity of the specific form of that primacy dogmatically affirmed by Rome today.
Indeed, a number of factors suggest that the eleventh century marked a turning point not only for relations between East and West, but also for the actual theological development of the idea of papal primacy in the West itself. It is in the eleventh century that the word papatus was coined, suggesting a qualitative order of ministry, even if not a sacramental one, superseding the order of episcopatus.[24] Siecenski likewise describes how “titles that had been shunned by earlier popes…were now embraced with full vigor.”[25] Likewise, it was at this point that the traditional practice of circulating among the churches a profession of faith upon the accession of a new pope was abandoned, despite Patriarch Peter III’s request to the pope that he restore such communication.[26] The concrete changes that were transpiring in the Roman self-conception of her jurisdictional powers reflected a more basic shift in the papal conception of the Church’s ontology. Along these lines, Klaus Schatz describes the “new interpretation of primacy of [sic] the eleventh century” as “not primarily juridical in nature, but more spiritual or even mystical.”[27] The essence of the new doctrine is encapsulated in the phrase “mother of the churches.” At this point in time, the essence of the Church qua Church was understood to actually flow through the bishop of Rome from Christ. Such a conception makes intelligible the coinage of the word papatus. In the patristic era, the primacy of the bishop of Rome was generally understood to arise within the subsistence of the communion of local Churches. Roland Minnerath writes concerning the actions of Basil and John Chrysostom that they “sought the help of Rome in order to activate the communion between Eastern and Western bishops…[because] communion with Rome was the sign of effective communion with all the Catholic bishops.”[28] In the developing view of the Gregorian reform, the church was a body whose life was mediated by the bishop of Rome personally.
The range of possible Orthodox views, given the evidence of medieval theology, thus appears to be more broad than the range of possible Roman Catholic views, given the specificity of formal magisterial teaching on the subject. Applying Vincent’s counsel to consult first the decrees of Ecumenical Councils, one immediately finds that certain extreme statements on Roman primacy by Orthodox writers and even official church bodies are ruled out. At the Seventh Ecumenical Council, for example, Pope Hadrian I is addressed as the “Most Holy Head” who possesses the “dignity of the chief priesthood.” The Pope of Rome is the “veritable chief priest” who presides “in the see of the holy and superlaudable Apostle Peter.” Also of interest in this context is the statement of the Council that the “will of the Lord will be accomplished” when the Pope is conjoined with those who are “assembled here” because of Christ’s statement that He is present where “two or three are gathered in my Name.”[29] Similarly, at the Council of Chalcedon, Pope Leo is spoken of as the “Archbishop of all the Churches.”[30] The deposition of Dioscorus of Alexandria is carried out in the name of “the archbishop of the great and elder Rome… and through this present most holy synod together with the thrice blessed and all-glorious Peter the Apostle, who is the rock and foundation of the Catholic Church.”[31] It is of special note that the specific invocation of the Apostle Peter does not simply follow the name of Pope Leo, but follows the invocation of papal authority conjoined with conciliar authority, suggesting something like the “mitigated papalism” of Mark of Ephesus, where the authority of the Church Catholic exists in the mutually complementary offices of pope and college.
Of special interest is also the reference to the bishop of Rome as the “archbishop of all the churches.” The pertinent question for the inquirer, upon reading such a title, concerns the kind of authority which was possessed by an archbishop. While varying jurisdictional arrangements with varying degrees of primatial power have been present in different times and regions, the intrinsic character of primacy is defined in Apostolic Canon 34: “The bishops of every nation must acknowledge him who is first among them and account him as their head, and do nothing of consequence without his consent… But neither let him who is the first do anything without the consent of all; for so there will be unanimity, and God will be glorified through the Lord in the Holy Spirit.”[32] To speak of the Pope of Rome as the archbishop of all the churches cannot, then, be equated without consideration to his having ordinary and immediate jurisdiction over all the Churches. Indeed, the context of the Council, given the critical analysis of St. Leo’s Tome by the Council Fathers[33], suggests something more like that described in the Apostolic Canons, where primatial and collegial authority are both necessary for the Council’s being what it is. The most significant example in distinguishing between the defined Roman Catholic view and the “moderate papalism” of Mark and Symeon can be found in the Fifth Ecumenical Council, where the Council Fathers specifically invoked the necessity of collegial action to rebuke Pope Vigilius, declaring the need to follow “the great examples left us by the Apostles” who did not make a formal ruling "until...gathered together...nor is there any other way in which the truth can be manifest...since each one needs the help of his neighbor [and] in Ecclesiastes [Solomon] says 'two are better than one...'”[34] Given the criterion of fidelity to General Councils cited in the documents of Vatican I themselves, it is difficult, if not impossible, to see how the principle of even possible (even if not prudentially wise) papal unilateralism can be warranted from tradition.
That the apostolic authority of Peter is invoked in the conjunction of primacy and collegiality points a way towards integrating the well-known tradition of Peter’s association with the local bishop with the universal primacy of the Roman See. The Apostle Peter is associated with the episcopate most famously in Cyprian’s On the Unity of the Church, but also in Dionysius the Areopagite and by Gregory of Nyssa, who stated that “through Peter [Christ] gave to the bishops the keys of the heavenly honors.”[35] Indeed, Cyprian himself, while clearly expounding the relationship of the episcopal college to the Apostle Peter, once uses the phrase “Chair of Peter” to refer to the episcopal chair at the Church of Rome in particular.[36]
The above evidence suggests that the Petrine texts ought to be taken in reference to the episcopal college as a whole, with specific prerogatives within that episcopal college belonging to the bishop of Rome as the head of the church who presides in love. Such a model accounts does not simply place one interpretation alongside the other, but integrates the two so that they imply one another. In that the Church is the Body of Christ who is the incarnate Son of the Eternal Father through the Holy Spirit, the Church necessarily reflects the interplay of unity and diversity within the life of the triune God. As John Zizioulas writes, “The Church cannot but be a unity of the one and the many at the same time.” The Father is the one and only source of the triune God, but is that source only as the Father and thus cannot be who He is without the Son to whom He is bound in love by the Holy Spirit.[37] In Zizioulas’ words “there is simultaneity between the one and the many, similar to that found in the very being of God as Trinity…”[38] The trinitarian basis for the simultaneous birth of primatial and conciliar qualities is confirmed by the the concluding invocation of “God”, the “Lord”, and the “Spirit” in Apostolic Canon 34, the New Testament signifiers for the triune personhood of God. The link between the trinitarian and petrine character of episcopal collegiality and primacy may also be found in the first of the Apostolic Canons, requiring that each bishop be consecrated by “two or three” other bishops.[39]
This triadic character to the episcopate, intriguingly, was manifested in a number of Roman sources through the triple Petrine primacy belonging not only to the Church of Rome, but also to the Churches of Alexandria and Antioch. The Decretum Gelasianum, for example, orders the three primatial churches as Rome, Alexandria, and Antioch, linking each of them to the apostolic mission of Peter and distinguishing Rome from the other two not through its particular relationship to the Apostle Peter but instead through its relationship to Paul, who is said to have “equally” made Rome “special in Christ the Lord.”[40] Likewise, writing to Eulogius of Alexandria, Pope Gregory the Great wrote, regarding the “principality itself the See of the Prince of the apostles alone has grown strong in authority, which in three places is the See of one.”[41] Indeed, it was only after establishing itself as the sole Petrine See of theological weight that the Papacy finally acceded to the fivefold primatial ordering of the Church.[42]
The pursuit of “ecumenism in time” is essential if there is to be a true restoration of communion between East and West. The theological vision of primacy patterned therein, particularly in the Ecumenical Councils, suggests that petrine authority is received by the episcopal college as a whole immediately from Christ, with a primacy of “mediate” or “extraordinary” jurisdiction being intrinsic to it, concentrated particularly on the Apostolic See of Rome. The interlocking necessity of collegial and primatial power emerges from the nature of the Trinity whose unity and diversity are equally ultimate, contextualizing and reinforcing each other rather than being a compromise where two opposites meet halfway. Any “common model of life” for the churches will have to look something like this. Such a model, however, cannot honestly accommodate the theological definitions of the First and Second Vatican Councils. Such barriers reveal the necessity of miracles for any ecumenical success, thus constantly redirecting us to the real purpose and source of ecumenical dialogue- more perfect embodiment of the one who finally answered the question: “Son of Adam, can these bones live?” (Ezk. 37:3)

[10] The sufficiency of the petrine character of the Apostolic See for papal power seems to me more important than generally recognized- it entails, for example, that other factors often cited in the first millennium actually had nothing to do with the source of papal power- since the pope would retain exactly the powers he had even lacking these other elements.

Sometimes, the complexity and apparent subjectivity of this process is cited as a reason to prefer the contemporary Catholic idea of a living Magisterium with the capacity to provide definitions whose dogmatic character is known from the canonical criteria which they fulfill independent of one’s views of the doctrine defined therein. The problem with this argument is twofold. First, the question facing a contemporary inquirer is not what sort of Church one would establish if one were Christ- it concerns the sort of Church our Lord actually established. Second, the canonical criteria which are said to distinguish an infallible teaching from a non-infallible teaching are themselves not infallibly defined in a way which is not circular. Thus, arguments about the alleged epistemological ease of the Roman Catholic system (in addition to presuming such ease to be an objective good- see Prov. 25:2) are useless for distinguishing apostolic tradition from pretenders.

Married Life
A/N: y/n - your name, Italics - inner thoughts. Submit requests here and here. Read my other work here. Word Count ~ 1072
Thank you @icantstayinmylane for the request!
Tumblr media
Every morning I wake up, I am so blessed to be married to my best friend and have two beautiful children. Gerald and I have been together for nearly seven years now and I couldn’t be happier. However, we have only been married for about a year now.  I rolled over in bed and saw that it was 6:30 in the morning. Guess it’s time to get up. Gerry had an interview this morning and I wanted to make sure he ate before he leaves. I hop out of bed and throw on some clothes for the day because while Gerald’s at his interview, I’ll be taking our daughter, Stella, and our son, James, out to the park.
Tumblr media
They have grown up so much. Stella and James are both five. Stella is a daddy’s girl but it’s ok because James is my little man. Before starting breakfast, I popped my head into my kid's room to see if either of them is awake. I check James’ room first. I walk down the hall and quietly open James’ door. He was sound asleep. It’s so crazy how much he looked like Ger. James was his little twin. I shut the door and turn around to the other side of the hall. I peek into Stella’s room and I see her holding up her teddy bear above her.
“Hey, little one,” I smile, opening the door, and coming inside.
“Hi, mommy,” she smiles and sat up.
“How did you sleep,” taking Stella into my arms and hugging her.
“Good mommy,” she said, hopping out of bed.
“Hey since you’re awake would you like to make breakfast for daddy and James,” I ask, picking her up. I was so grateful to have her, and I thank God every day that she made it. She was born a month and a half early.
“Can we make pancakes,” she said with excitement bubbling over her cute face.
I nodded and carried her to the kitchen, so we can start cooking. An hour and a half later, Stella and I cooked pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit salad, coffee, and orange juice. “They’re gonna be so full,” she giggled. The sound of heavy footsteps and giggles overpower Stella’s laughs. I look up and see my handsome son and husband.
“You look great, babe,” I said, glancing over looking at Gerry walking down the stairs while holding our son.
Tumblr media
“You look great, babe,” I said, winking. Stella gets off her chair and runs up to Gerry.
“Woah! Did you and Mommy make all of this,” He said, excitingly looking at the dining room table and giving me a kiss.
“Yes, we did! For you and James,” she yelled.
“Then I guess we’ll have to eat it all right now,” He said kissing Stella’s head and sitting her on his lap.
*Skipping breakfast*
“Alright, well it’s time for daddy to go to work. I’ll be back soon,” Gerry said, standing up and kissing Stella and James on the head. “Hey baby, can you come over here real quick?” he gestures to the living room. I follow him into the living towards the front door.
“What’s wrong, baby,” I ask him because he looked nervous or scared.
“Well I have to go to the interview right now, but I have a question for you,” he said wrapping his arms around my waist, pulling me closer, and kissing the tip of my nose. “What park are you guys going to and how long will you guys be there? I wanna go there after the interview.”
Relief washed over me knowing that he was ok. “Umm, I think we’re gonna go to the one on Carlton Way,” I assured him.
“Ok, my love, I should be done in about two hours. I’ll meet you guys there,” He kissed me one last time and walked out the door to the car.
*Gerald’s POV*
I arrived at the Power 106 building and meet up with Matt around nine in the morning.
“So basically, all Cruz is gonna be asking you about is the new album and married life, alright,” Matt told me and ushering me into the interview room. This wasn’t my first time at the Cruz show so I’m pretty comfortable here. I walk into the room and make introductions with everyone and put on the headphones.
“Good morning Los Angeles! Today we have G-Eazy making another return to the show! How are you doing today, my G,” Cruz said with so much energy.
“I’m doing great,” I smiled. This place has felt like a second home.
“Let’s start by asking you about the album. Your recent single just went platinum. How you feeling about that,” He asked.
“It’s fucking crazy man. I couldn’t have done it without my fans and my family especially my wife and kids, man,” I smiled from ear to ear. I’m so lucky to have such a supportive, trusting, and loyal wife.
“Yes, yes let’s ask you about that. You’ve been married for a little while now like a year now right?” Cruz asked holding up a picture of Y/N and I’s wedding.
“Almost, almost a year. I couldn’t be happier,” the grin on my face is starting to hurt but I didn’t care.
“It’s good that you two are happy. So married life is a lot different from the wild and partying lifestyle you’re used to.” I nodded my head along with his question. “So why did you let yourself get tied down, man? No disrespect but a lot of girls are sad.”
I let out a little laugh and thought about the question for a minute. “Yeah, of course, married life is different from what I used to live like but having children is what made me ultimately stop that lifestyle. My beautiful wife and kids keep me grounded, they don’t tie me down. I couldn’t continue doing what I love without having that support from my family,” I explained, my grin not leaving my face for a second. “Sorry to the girls out there but I love my family.”
The interview goes on for another thirty minutes and then I make my way out of the building. I pull out my phone and tell Y/N that I just finished the interview and I'll be at the park in about twenty minutes. Before getting to the park, I stop at the store and pick up four ice cream cones. I instantly spot my gorgeous family and nearly sprint to them. I’m welcome with nothing but hugs and kisses. I give them all kisses and sit down. I reach over and make sure to give my wife another kiss.  I’m so lucky to have them in my life! I’m never letting them go.

okay guys, here is part 2 of the spideychelle regency au
you definitely should read part 1 before jumping into this or you will be insanely confused. ALRIGHT BACK TO THE PAST. LET US DO IT.
There are many benefits, Peter finds, to being a man of wealth and means. Being the ward of a great Duke offers him privileges that reach farther than any he would have known as a simple blacksmith or even as a officer of the British Royal Navy. He has access to art and culture and finery and food like none he has ever experienced. His blankets are made of finer material than any tails he had owned prior to being ennobled. His dearest Aunt May lives in a home that is triple the size of their old residence.
The greatest benefit of all, the greatest treasure of his life, is the honor of knowing Princess Michèlle of France. It is also his greatest sorrow.
He blesses and damns the day Anthony ennobled him. For if he had never been elevated to such a title he would have lived his entire life without knowing her person. Some days the thought of living a life without her is enough to cripple him and others it feels like a life free of her might have been a mercy. There is no rest, no peace for Peter while Michèlle orbits his world.
To long for that which he cannot have is the keenest, sharpest pain to Peter for he both has her and does not.
They have stolen moments at Windsor Castle while she stays at Court and thinly veiled correspondence while she is away, but it is not enough. He wishes to have her on his arm, to make a house and a home together, to have her for a wife and a partner and his dearest friend.
Princesses do not marry wards, he can nearly hear Anthony’s voice in his head.
He resigns himself to never seeing her again a hundred times over, but these bargains with himself never last. One word from her has him taking his fastest horse to Windsor Castle to take her company. A chilly ride through the night on horseback is worth one dance, the smallest brush of her fingers.
Fourteen months from their first meeting, Michèlle sends him a note. He is out on the grounds of Carlton House with Sub-Lieutenant Barton hunting for game when the servant rushes out from the house and presses a small note in his hand. His confident, Edward, gives Peter a significant look, “It is urgent, my lord.”
There is a sharpness to Edward’s tone that immediately puts Peter on edge, “Thank you, Ned. You’re dismissed.” He hands his musket off to Sub-Lieutenant Barton and tightly smiles, “You must forgive me. It is urgent.”
His friend furrows his eyebrows but if he wishes to say anything about the letter, he does not, “Of course, my lord. I shall return next Tuesday. Perhaps the game will be better, then.”
“My deepest apologies, Sub-Lieutenant.” The two gentlemen stiffly bow at one another before Peter stalks his way back up to Carlton House to read the letter. Edward only gives Peter urgent messages when they come from Michèlle and something akin to fate is breathing down Peter’s back. He knows whatever is in this letter will bring him nothing but pain.
He marches on.
Once he is in the safety of his private parlor, he begins to pace. The letter feels heavier than the usual stock of parchment he receives, while the letter is small the words inside them must way a hundred tons. He hopes he is wrong, but with a glance down at the letter he confirms it is indeed from Michèlle. It bears her seal.
His shaky fingers he cracks open the hardened wax and the sound of the breaking wax could be his heart breaking as well.
The letter holds his deepest despair.
Officer Parker
Honorable Marquess Lord Stark,
I write this letter to inform you of my engagement to his royal majesty, Prince George.
There will be a celebration of this union at Windsor Castle in nine days time. I dearly hope you will be able to attend and share in my good fortune.
With great admiration, your beloved friend,
Princess Michèlle
Nine days.
Peter crushes the parchment in his hand and throws it into the flaming fire.
Nine days.
In nine days time, he will be expected to stand idly by with the rest of court while Michèlle marries the King’s son. He will be expected to toast and dance to their happy nuptials. He will be expected to delight in the birth of her sons to another man. He will be expected to surrender all memory of her to the wind and pretend their own happiness never existed.
The memories of her smile and laughter will be banished from his mind. He has nine days to relish in them before he must put them aside forever.
That first dance will haunt his dreams, he knows it. Their first kiss will be the only kiss he will ever know, ever indulge in, for how can he have another after having her? All of the moments that followed that first night he is not sure he could forget, even though he knows he must.
For how does one forget a person such as she?
He remembers it all at once. The way she stole from the castle in the middle of the night and rode wildly into the darkness with him on her tails. The twilight kisses. The evening spent in the woods near the pond where Michèlle had waded waist deep into the water and shouted poetry at the sky.
No woman could ever tell poetry to the heavens and make the Gods listen, he is certain. Only she.
He remembers their dances and hidden smiles in the center of crowded halls. He remembers her letters, the ones that were a novel-length long about her childhood, her favorite books, her dreams for a world better than their own. He keeps those mementos in a box under his bed with a dusty pink ribbon stolen from the dress she wore the first night they met.
Nine days is not enough time to forget a world of love.
Peter knocks the door to Anthony’s private study open like a man possessed. “Did you know?” he accuses his warden.
Anthony takes one look at Peter and he sees the knowledge swirl in his eyes. Anthony knew and purposely kept it from him. “Your dalliance with that girl could not have lasted, Peter. You know it.”
“You lied to me.”
“I protected you,” Anthony challenges, clamoring to his feet, “as I have done and will continue to do. My brother is not a kind man. His greatest pleasures in life consist of making others miserable. I joined the Naval forces to separate myself from his poison.”
Peter shakes his head, “And what, may I ask, does this have to do with me?”
Anthony walks around the front of his desk and grabs Peter’s shoulders, firm and desperate, “I have no children, my boy, because I was not permitted to marry. Any children of mine would be a threat to his throne, his lands and titles and his children’s claim to the throne. George is not a popular ruler, whereas I have always been beloved by the people.” Peter feels Anthony’s nails biting into his jacket, “Your existence, your status as my son and heir, drives him madder than he would ever dare show. His jealous poison trickles down to you. And I have tried to keep his hatred from you, to keep you safe and well-cared for.”
“I do not understand. This has nothing to do with her marrying the prince,” Peter begins.
“It has everything to do with that, Peter. He is having your Michèlle marry his son for hate of me, for hate of you.” Anthony pauses for a length before speaking softly, “You cannot imagine your affections of her have gone unnoticed at court. You only travel to Windsor when she is visiting, you only dance with her at every ball, you only look to her in a crowd of thousands.”
Peter’s knees collapse inward and he falls unceremoniously into the nearby chair. His happiness for which he must now be forever barred is a purposeful slight on behalf of the King?
Peter rubs his weary eyes, “I must go to her.”
Anthony sits opposite of him and searches for Peter’s eyes, “And what can you imagine will your arrival achieve?”
“I-” Peter swallows, “If I do not go to her now, I will spend the rest of my days regretting it.”
Anthony nods, his face betraying sadness beyond any that Peter could have imagined he was capable of. For the first time since meeting Anthony, Peter thinks, he looks old. “I will have the a horse saddled for you.”
The ride to Windsor Castle feels longer and harder than it ever has in the past. Rain beats down on him like the heavens are weeping for him, or perhaps they are laughing at him. He has no trust of any God now.
When he arrives a servant girl, Betty, greets him. He knows how he must look, dragged through water and mud for miles, but he has no time to consider such trivialities. Betty curtsies to Peter as he dismounts from his horse, “M’lord, we wasn’t expecting any visitors this time a’night.”
“I shan’t be long.” He squints at the servant girl and recognition flushes his system, “You’re Edward’s sweetheart, yes?”
She blushes, “I ain’t never been called no sweetheart, m’lord, but aye. I know him some.”
“Ned receives letters for me from Windsor on behalf of Princess Michèlle. You’re the one who gives him the letters, aren’t you?”
Betty swallows, “I’m sorry, sir, I don’t know what you’re-”
“It’s alright,” Peter assures her, taking a step forward, his eyes blazing, “You will never be in any trouble by my hand, I swear it. Are you her lady?”
She nods, skeptical, “One of ‘em, m’lord.”
“Please, I beg of you, tell her to meet me. She will know where.” He kisses Betty’s hands, a final moment of hope.
Peter remounts his horse and makes his way toward the forest. The same one where she would kiss him at dawn and recite poetry to the woods. The same place where she laid her curls across his lap and spoke her mind more freely than any person he had ever had the pleasure to know. The same woods where he fell in love with her five times over.
He waits on a tree stump near the pond that she recklessly jumped into one evening and counts the hours as they pass. As the sun begins to rise in the east, his heart plummets.
Until he sees her walk through the thick of the trees with the pink hues of the early morning a backdrop to her beauty.
He stands not because a gentleman is expected to stand in the presence of a lady but because she moves him to his feet. And he knows she realizes that is why he is standing, too, because her smile is exasperated but all-together fond. There is love between them. he knows it, true and steadfast.
When they are feet apart, he bows his head and she rolls her eyes but curtsies. As he stands to his full stature again, his eyes never leave her. If this is to be their last moment he does not wish to miss a minute of it.
He invades her space in the span of a breath and crushes her mouth to his. Ever kiss they have ever shared prior to this one has been a pale imitation of love. He pours it all into this kiss as her face is tucked safely between his two palms. Propriety is nothing compared to the feel of this extraordinary woman in his arms.
“You cannot marry him,” he demands between kisses. “You cannot.”
Her hands grab at his lapels, drawing him impossibly closer, “I have loved you to distraction and I will always love you, Peter.”
He chokes into their kiss, tears pouring down his face, “Do not.” His voice breaks, “Do not talk like this is goodbye.”
She pulls herself out of his embrace and turns wildly on him, “What would you have me do, truly? My duty is to my family.”
“I could you be your family. We could run away. The world is vast and wide,” he reaches for her and she yanks her arm away.
“You speak as though I have a choice. A woman has no choices, Peter. I do as I am bid.”
“The world can be different, better. We have spoken of it,” he implores her. “We have spoken of it here. In these very woods.”
“It was all a fantasy, Peter. All of it. You and I. These woods. They were stolen moments and I have cherished them, but I will do as I am told. I must.”
He snatches her hands in his and kisses each of them sweetly, “Please, Michèlle.”
She makes a noise that sounds horrible and sad and she turns his face up to kiss her. This kiss is her love for him, he can taste it. “I am,” she whispers against his lips, “I am better for having known you.”
“Michèlle,” he gasps, “Please.”
“I love you,” she says one last time before she is prying herself from his arms and disappearing into the trees. He stands frozen in shock for moments before he is chasing after her between the trees. The cold morning air nips at his cheeks as he runs but no matter how hard he pushes himself to find her, he can never quite reach her. She is gone.
The journey back to Carlton House is long. He makes no stops and sets a punishing pace for his horse.
When he arrives home he speaks to no one, he takes no food, he answers no letters. Anthony and his Aunt May try to speak to him but he does not leave his room for nine days.
He awakens on her wedding day and reads through her letters. If he inhales deeply enough he can smell her perfume, or perhaps that is his imagination. His body convulses at every sound of the bell, marking another hour past.
Then, mercifully, the day is over. And she is married.
Like a man possessed, Peter begins to pack. Anthony finds him the day after Michèlle’s wedding day putting on his Officer’s uniform and his guardian stalls, “The sea will not change what has happened.”
“No,” Peter agrees, “but it will take me far away from here.”
“India is a long journey.”
“Yes,” Peter buttons the front of his Officer’s uniform, “I intend for it to be.”
Anthony looks pained by his going but extends his arm for a hand shake. The man extending his well wishes is not the Duke or his guardian, it is his Admiral looking through time at the fifteen year old he had once been. The two men clutch hands in a firm grip. “Safe travels, my friend,” Anthony whispers.
“Thank you, Tony.”
“Tony?” Anthony smiles.
Peter shrugs, “It suits you, m’lord.”
“Your Grace,” Anthony corrects him and their first conversation lives again in this room.
It takes Peter fifteen days to get to the port and when he arrives Captain Rogers and Lieutenant Barnes are there to greet him. The three men smile at each other and it is Captain Rogers that says, “For the king and the crown.”
Peter shakes his head, “For England.” He will never wish the king well again in his life.
The journey to India and the return trip back home takes Peter over three years to complete. The boy he had left behind in England is a distant memory, but those memories shine when he dreams of her and her smile. The world and woman he tries to leave behind stick to him the whole while he is away, he could not banish thoughts of her much less than he could stop breathing. She is a part of him.
However, the distance does make the suffocating feeling in his chest feel more manageable.
When he touches down in England after his years abroad he thinks home looks very much the same. He had hoped for some kind of worldly difference. If it was much changed than it would have been easier to wipe away his thoughts of a time before.
Yet, Carlton House looks unchanged with one major exception.
Peter stands over Anthony’s grave and feels too much, it numbs him. His Aunt says gently at his shoulder, “The fever took him six months back.”
“Did he suffer?” Peter asks.
“He was in good spirits,” she smiles, “until the very end.” Aunt May clutches Peter’s hand, “He spoke so fondly of you, Peter. You were his son in his mind.”
Peter gives a watery smile and reads the gravestone to himself.
Here lies Duke Anthony “Tony” Stark
Admiral. Friend. Father.
“Yes,” Peter agrees, “Yes, he was.”
The upkeep of Carlton House falls into his hands and it takes him three months of work before the house is back to its grand state before Tony died. And when those three months are up he cannot avoid a trip to court. He has been expected for some time now.
Everything is a blur as he travels: the countryside, the people, the castle.
The world only sharpens when a little boy with sharp angles and full lips collides into Peter on the grounds of Windsor. He staggers back and stares.
The two year old boy fumbles with his toy and lisps, “I’m sorry, my lord. Miss Betty hid my toy.”
“Tony!” A voice calls. A voice he has heard every night in his sleep for the last three years. A voice he is almost certain is not real. Michèlle’s voice. “What did I say about running off?”
“Sorry, Mama,” the boy ducks his head.
When their eyes meet three years slip away. If he had ever been afraid that his feelings had faded with time this moment proves him insurmountably wrong. She still makes him feel like that first day at the ball, where their eyes met across the room.
“Tony?” Peter says her son’s name, but he knows it sounds more like a question.
She nods, “He was dear to someone I once knew.”
Peter remembers himself and bows, “Your majesty.”
She curtsies as lamely and uninspired as he remembered. “Yes, I know who I am.” Her voice is a strained attempt at teasing, “Lieutenant Stark, how lovely to have you home. You look well.”
“As do you,” he says and he cannot keep the longing from his tone.
They share a long, lingering silence before the little boy between them interrupts their moment, “I’m Tony.”
Peter startles and grins. Then, he drops to his knees and offers his hand to the little boy, “It is a pleasure to meet you, your Majesty.”
“No,” the boy juts his chin out, “Just Tony, please.”
“Of course,” Peter concedes, “Just Tony.”
His eyes glance up at Michèlle who is looking down at her son with so much fondness and love that he cannot hold the past against her. For if she had not done her duty she never would have had her boy.
He swallows thickly and stands. He bows perfunctory, “Your Majesty.”
“Peter,” she says quietly. He hates how quickly he stops. “I have never stopped.”
“I never will,” is what he says before he takes his leave of her.
The past staying where it should. In the past.

Fine, if Tobin MUST be a hab, can she at least admit that Youppi! is a monstrosity. Carlton might have soulless eyes, but a polar bear makes sense, I guess? He’s less dumb than that orange bastard. At least Gritty is trashy orange fun, and I hope Christen tells her that. I also hope she sends Tobin a Carlton plushie so Tobin can have a real mascot in her life, and Tobin’s disgruntled about it but also never even thinks of throwing him out.
Oh Youppi is a fucking monstrosity. Is he a human? Some sort of animal? A mythical creature? Literally no one knows. and they're just pretending its Normal. Gritty is horror filled but the vibes are enjoyable, Youppi has seen god and he was nonplussed.
I think Tobin probably actively avoids Youppi. like, Tobin's a pretty chill person but there are some lines you don't cross and being a god/monster full of orange is one of them. She tries to protest to management that he should stop coming to games because its not like he's inspiring team cheer, but they don't listen.
Christen is probably also pretty unconvinced by Toronto's mascot, though. Why is he 6'4? It seems excessive. Also there is nothing going on inside his brain, which she supposes is a good thing, but like, why does he stare that way? What is his intent? She's just trying to play hockey here.
But then again Tobin has a tendency to go pretty dead-eyed in the middle of the game, so maybe Christen thinks its funny to start calling her Carlton, which dissolves into Carl, and then it sticks because this hockey and nicknames are like fungus. Can't get rid of them. Tobin acts offended but when Christen proposes she call her Youppi instead Tobin goes ghost white and accepts being called Carl for the rest of her career.
Christen does send her a little Carlton bear and Tobin probably chirps her for putting her life at risk because she lives in Montreal, Christen, giving her leafs apparel is asking for her to be murdered. But, whats this? The Carlton bear has a customised 'Heath' jersey on it, which sends Tobin's assumption that Christen had just picked it up from the team store at the arena spiralling out of control. Did Christen get this specially made? For Tobin? For herself? Tobin can't decide which is weirder. Is it a joke? Is it a threat? Is Tobin getting traded? Can they announce a trade this way - it seems sort of barbaric? But if its not, does that mean that Christen put effort and energy into making a tiny jersey with her name on it for a soulless little mascot because they had one moment of light humour between them?
Does that mean..... Something?
No, no, thats probably normal rival behaviour. This is perfectly acceptable rivalry activity. Tobin puts Carlton on her mantle and goes to sleep. Yes, this is how conference rivals behave. That makes sense.
