Imagine you and Strife coming back home after seeing "Across the Spider-Verse".

Strife: *pumped* Wow. Now that...was something else!

You: What did I tell you?

Strife: (grabbing your waist and pulling you closer) That it's a cinematic masterpiece and that I should see it because I'd love it.

You: (holding at his nape) And I was right.

Strife: *tenderly* And you were right. I have such a smart girlfriend.

You: (leaning in so that your foreheads touch) Which one of the Spiders was your fave?

Strife: Probably Hobie. Kid's got his head screwed on right. I could see a bit of myself in him, back from when I was younger...

You: *excited*: I KNOW RIGHT? He's the best!

Strife: So...you like him?

You: I mean, how could you not? He's just so EFFORTLESSLY COOL, ya know? He's such a lanky, guitar-wielding, rule-breaking, not-giving-a-crap force of nature! And don't get me started on that AMAZING HAIR -

Strife: *guarded* Oh. You do like him.

You: Well yeah, I went to see him in cinema two times already! Uh, Strife, gotta pee. Let go.

Strife: (lets you slip between his lowered forearms and watches as you happily trot off to the bathroom)

Fury: (enters stage left, as she would) Ah, you're back already. How was the movie?

Strife: *gloomily* Great. Just fucking peachy. I've been cast aside for a younger guy.

someone probably said this already but in spiderverse i think it's interesting how when pavitr was first introduced everyone thought something bad was gonna happen to him bc of how confident and optimistic he was. and then in the actual movie we see that something bad was supposed to happen to him (police chief dying!) but it doesn't! miles stops it! and miguel berates miles for this, says it's going to cause the universe to collapse or whatever.

there's this idea that tragedy is inherent to spidermans growth, and while it's true that some spiderpeople learn important lessons through loss, no one stops to ask, is it really necessary? yeah, maybe the chief was supposed to die. but why does spiderman have to be formed through tragedy? why do we (as heroes) have to let people die? pavitr didn't lose anyone, and he's still a good spiderman! maybe, if he doesn't suffer, he'll end up better off for it!

so while miguel is arguing for all this big picture stuff about saving the multiverse he's lost sight of what it really means to be a spiderman, he's not looking out for the real individual people. yeah it's just one person who would die, but that one person means something to someone. shrugging and saying "stuff just sucks sometimes, we can't do anything about it" is the opposite of what superheroes do. pretty obviously, miles arc is also a reflection of the struggles people face in real life, working within unequal systems, where it's easy to shrug and say "that's just the way it is" and not ask "but why does it need be this way? can't we do something about it?"

miguel is arguing that you can't have your cake and eat it too. presumably, miles and co. are going to find a way to get around that and change things for the better (and maybe that's why miles has that line about two cakes in the advisors office!)

I love how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse said “Anyone can be Spider-Man”. I love how it inspired everyone to imagine their own Spider-People, saving the day in their own universes, with all kinds of cool, interesting personalities and aesthetics and mutations and life stories and relationships. We all put pieces of our soul into these homemade heroes. We had fun. We found community. And then Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse said, “Wow, great job! You’ve really taken our message to heart. Well, get ready for even more of everything you liked from the first movie and a new message to complement the first. Anyone can be Spider-Man… and anyone can be pulled into a cult.”

So now we all have to contemplate whether our lovingly crafted heroes would ever be on Team Mandatory Trauma Because Martyr Complex or not and why.

since the spiderverse fandom is dying out, i have a confession to make

i thought gwen and miles were already dating until i saw the clocktower scene and was like "wait.. they're just friend?"

Have you all ever stop to think that if it weren't for Miles, Pavitr would've felt the pain every other Spiderman had felt in their lives? The inevitable canon losing their loved ones? How he almost lost his girlfriend and said girlfriend's dad aka THE painful event that connects all Spiderman together? How Miles managed to stop it not because he knew but because that was the right thing to do? And now Miles is defying the 'canon' event in HIS own story, how he wants to break from the mold that almost always define Spiderman? And now its not just Pavitr but also Gwen found out HER own dad is also still alive and maybe just maybe if they can avoid it so can Miles? How Pav technically owes Miles because if it weren't for him he would've been yet another Spiderman with the same tragic event? How this might shape up their future interactions? How this might play out in the next movie? Have you? Have you? Have you?

• one of the best movies i have ever seen. legitimately. having a hard time forming coherent thoughts about it right now

• shameik moore’s voice acting is phenomenal. out of this world. you can feel every ounce of miles’s emotions through his performance

• SO MANY REFERENCES!!! off the top of my head: andrew garfield’s spiderman, toby maguire’s spiderman, donald glover as the prowler, ps4 spiderman, animated tasm spiderman, PS2 SPIDERMAN!!!!!

• about the love triangle. it wasnt as big of a thing as everyone was afraid it was gonna be (thank god) and it seemed like hobie had no interest in gwen at all really?? (in fact he seemed more interested in miles but i DIGRESS—) like he really just seemed like a friend to her but because miles is 15 and like. in love he overthinks things. small win for the love triangle hater community (me)

• on that note. hobie. fucking. brown. the way he’s animated was nuts, he was so unique yet he fit right in with the rest of the cast. his characterization, the anarchism, his lil quips, him and mayday?? and the way he helped miles go against miguel and eventually helped gwen too?? i cannot WAIT to see him in beyond the spiderverse

• PENI IS BACK!!!! AND SHE GOT A NEW BOT!!!!

• miles being the original anomaly omg. it makes so much sense but i NEVER would have guessed that’s part of why everyone hates him (also i KNEW the hunt for miles would have something to do with jefferson’s death. i have receipts that i predicted that MONTHS AGO!!!!)

• they knew what they were doing when they designed miguel ohhhhhmygod. also i hope we get to see more of his vampire qualities in beyond the spiderverse

• THE BEYOND THE SPIDERVERSE SQUAD IS SO SICK. gwen, peter b (and mayday), pavitr, hobie, spider-byte, spider-noir, spider-ham, and peni!!!!! THE COOLEST SPIDER PEOPLE

haha no no it’s okay. im okay. i’m totally not obsessing over how something that all spider-men have relied on (nearly) without fault ultimately becomes a weakness for miles. watching the spider sense going off at nothing and freaking him out when he’s on the verge of having a panic attack is so heartbreaking to watch. he’s still just a kid
