hiii I saw you ask obelisart(?) about non-sticky skincare for sensory issues and I have similar sensory issues (mine are more about feeling slick/suffocated) and I got really into figuring out skincare stuff so I thought I’d send my opinions? if I’m overstepping feel free to ignore me!
disclaimer: I don’t have actual qualifications beyond a hobbyist’s interest in biology/chemistry and a lot of hyper focused internet research, my skin type is dry/dehydrated with a lot of oil buildup “sitting on top” throughout the day, I don’t often get pimples but when I do they’re long-lasting and leave marks behind, and I don’t have any health conditions beyond my sensory issues that might be affected by my skincare routine. also, I mostly shop at drugstores, I’m not going to exclusively recommend overpriced/obscure nonsense
my biggest thing was looking for stuff with hyluaronic acid as its main moisturizing ingredient. you can get it on its own in lil dropper bottles and it’s almost water thin and absorbs really fast. on its own, it dries a little tacky which might be bad for sticky-related sensory issues, but in a lotion/cream, hyluaronic acid helps keeps things thin and light. my favourite moisturizer is the neutrogena hydro boost which is relatively budget-friendly where I am but ymmv. I think it’s sodium hyluaronate on the label. if you’ve got $$$, squalane has a similar-but-better moisturizing effect but it lasts longer and has more of a dry oil texture, I have a tiny bottle I found on clearance and it lasts.
also, try using a toner! because it usually has a water-like texture, it doesn’t trigger anything for me but it makes a huge difference layered under moisturizer. layering lots of thin products in general helps bc I can skip steps on days I can’t handle them. brightening or skin-texture-evening toners are texturally the safest bet, moisturizing or soothing toners might have risky “thick” ingredients.
I bought a face spray on clearance for those days I don’t even want to touch my face but it’s itchy and mad and it actually really works! the active ingredient in mine is cica extract (it’s the dr. jart one) which is pretty close to water texture so it doesn’t trigger me.
using a physical (scrubby) exfoliant helps me have a “less reactive” surface to apply my products too, elf makes a peeling exfoliant that’s really nice but even a washcloth or a sugar scrub would work.
steaming my face helps moisturize it a bunch and all I have to do is put a tiny amount of moisturizer on top to seal it in and it feels amazing for headaches too. I have a face steamer I found on clearance but even a bowl of hot water with a towel over your head will work just fine.
I really like sheet masks bc they might be a sensory grey area depending on the formula, but they’re only on my face for 20 min max and then I can take them off, as opposed to a product that I’d wear until i next wash my face. the papery sheet means the texture is usually fine. a store near me usually has tonymoly, the crème shop, and innisfree multipacks on sale and they almost always have a safe dry finish once the product is absorbed. innisfree labels theirs as water type, essence type, or serum type. water type would be the safest for avoiding stickiness.
I like having a night routine that uses my heavier products bc I’m not being triggered if I’m asleep and then I have a lil more leeway in the morning. the laneige water sleeping mask is pricy (but often in the overstock stores like winners, marshalls, tj maxx near me at a fair price) but always not just a safe texture, but an enjoyable texture, and it makes my face so comfortable and soft. I genuinely use the water sleeping mask ingredient list as a reference point whenever I read an ingredient list. on my bad sensory days, it’s my whole skincare routine. I’ve heard the glow recipe watermelon glow sleeping mask has a similar (slightly heavier) texture but I’ve never seen it on sale.
cold products trigger me less, I often put things in the fridge before using them.
sometimes I go to stores with testers all by myself for like two hours and just try all the products so that way I can build a mental catalogue of what triggers me where, when, and how. on crowded days the staff won’t even notice you and on empty days they’ll leave you alone nbd if you say “oh I just wanted to try these out before I actually bought them”, plus they’re super helpful if you ask things like “oh I love the texture of this but I need something for my dry elbows/my stubborn pimples/etc.”, they’ll usually give you recommendations at every price point. also, if what you like is expensive, you can usually google dupes or find products with the same ingredients.
“bad” texture ingredients (imo): dimethcone or silicone (silicates) give that too-smooth slightly tacky suffocating texture, but some ppl prefer that slight tackiness over a more sticky experience. dimethcone is usually in gel-texture products, which is what I prefer for my face and body, but for my hands (the most easily triggered part of me), dimethcone is a no-go, which is why I have to wash my hands after doing my face. the amount and the other ingredients in the product means that it’s very dependent. I don’t like paraffin/paraffinium liquidum and petrolatum bc of the overwhelming waxy texture, mineral oil might provoke the same reactive bc they’re all petroleum byproducts. xanthan gum and carnauba wax would most likely be terrible for stickiness too. honey is not as rough as expected bc it often loses most of its stickiness when mixed with other stuff.
“maybe” textures: I use a hand cream that’s nearly 100% glycerin, it’s still not great while it’s on but it absorbs fast and leaves the least amount of texture/sensation behind, I’ve heard ppl say similar things about lanolin. products that use starch might have a better texture than expected bc the starch mitigates it but that varies, things with alcohol ingredients feel okay while going on but once all the alcohol evaporates it feels like all the other bad stuff is like a sludge on my face, so I try to avoid it.
“good” textures: texture ingredients are usually moisturizing or filler ingredients, but sometimes products use oils. that’s really dependent on the oil itself but I usually play it safe and get my active ingredients as acids or extracts, aloe is great light texture that has a dry finish. other cacti are similarly nice. green tea or willow extracts are usually very thin with a nice finish and they do a lot to calm down my skin and make it more comfortable. glycol shouldn’t be a safe ingredient but for me it usually is
if you do use a sticky product or if your tolerance is lower for whatever reason, a loose face powder on top of your face can “absorb” the worst of the texture so that it’s back in a tolerable range. this is best on days you’re going light on product bc you don’t want to get a paste/sludge feeling on top of your face.
using a nice moisturizing face wash can reduce the need for follow up products. I use the cerave hydrating cleanser which is fairly cheap where I am, especially for the size. the cetaphil one is nice too and I’ve heard good things about aveeno. neutrogena always has my back so I’m sure they’ve got something too but they can be expensive if they’re not on sale. because it’s a face wash that’s getting rinsed off anyways, heavier/riskier ingredients like oils, emollients, or occlusives are okay.
anyways, I’m very sorry if I overstepped/crossed boundaries/otherwise was rude. I had a rough time always feeling dry and itchy and like my skin was too tight and not being able to explain why “just put some cream on” was not an adequate solution and it’s been maybe three years now of me still trying to classify exactly what my triggers are, so I’m always very excited to chat with other people doing the same thing. don’t beat yourself up if you accidentally buy a “bad texture” and I hope you find a solution that works for you soon!
Oh my gosh, thank you so much. This is all very helpful. I appreciate the advice! I took many notes while reading this and I'll let you know how it goes!

Beauty Sleep is Actually a Real Thing
The Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask is here to give your beauty sleep an extra boost.
As soon as I opened the sample of the mask, I couldn’t help but immediately notice the watermelon scent. SO GOOD! The scent adds to the refreshing feel of this mask.
The color of this mask is a very light pink; which explains the product’s name. The main ingredients are watermelon and hyaluronic acid. The watermelon provides amino acids while the hyaluronic acid is extremely moisturizing.
When I went to bed, my face was very irritated. My skin has been dry lately from an acne treatment that i’m using. I wanted to try a mask that would be soothing and this mask did the trick. I woke up with very smooth skin. I washed it off with luke warm water and immediately saw the results; my skin was calm and soft. Goodbye dry skin!
I will be adding this mask to my collection of face masks. I have so many different face masks that I like to rotate through my skincare routine. I choose which mask I use based on the current state of my skin. I’ll be using this mask for dry, irritated skin from now on. I am so happy that I’ve discovered the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Face Mask! Originally, I received my sample of this mask from Sephora, however, it can also be purchased directly from the brand’s websites.
This company is very careful about what ingredients they put in their products. It is a vegan-friendly and cruelty-free company. (The Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask is formulated without synthetic dyes and mineral oils). This company looks out for your skin by using the very best ingredients.
Give your beauty sleep a boost with Glow Recipe!
xo, Annie

The Best Overnight Treatment/ Mask
We all know I’ve been an avid lover of Sunday Riley’s exorbitantly priced Luna Sleeping Night Oil, but it’s time for a new queen to rise. Luna is still amazing and the best way I’ve found to give my skin retinol, but I recently got my hands on a deluxe sample of a new favorite- and after a few weeks of use, I am HOOKED.
Let me introduce Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Sleeping Mask
Little is known about this Korean brand, and they only have 3 or 4 products. This sleeping mask blew up the internet hard early this year, and I was honestly hesitant to try it. “Glow” anything is usually for dry skin or people who want to look dewy. Meanwhile I have large pores, oily skin that always looks TOO dewy, and acne.
Then I actually tried using it and within a few nights, I fell in love. It smells like a jolly rancher but feels like a cooling gel when applied to the face (I use it at night after cleansing and sometimes toning, as a mask but also as an overnight moisturizer). In the morning, I woke up with baby-soft, supple skin and visibly reduced pore size- plus after repeat use I’m pretty sure it is getting rid of my breakouts.
The product has small amounts of AHA acid in it for exfoliating, but it doesn’t feel harsh or dehydrating. Be careful not to rub it in completely (after all it’s a mask and not a moisturizer) or it can start to pill a bit, but that’s the only possible complication I’ve noticed.
At $45/ a jar it’s certainly not cheap, but it’s also half the price of Luna and if my repeat use of the tiny sample I got is evidence, a full-size jar will last you FOREVER. Sephora also offers a smaller size version for around $20- which I would absolutely recommend trying for yourself.
This is one of those rare products that I think would work on any skin type and truly makes a noticeable difference.

Combination Skin: What To Use and How To Use It
Updated Feb 25, 2021 - Originally Posted: Nov 29, 2019
Combination skin is a real thing. Not quite dry, not quite oily; knowing how to care for it isn’t always easy. This common but sometimes confusing skin type marries areas of the face that are in oil production overdrive with areas that are dry, forming a patchwork-like texture on the skin’s surface. Simply, combination skin is out of balance, so sourcing beauty products to cater to it requires a little vigilance.
Alina Roytberg - co-founder of skincare company, Fresh - laid down the facts on this very skin type. She described the main indicators to include: “an oily T-zone (forehead, down the nose to the chin) with dry cheeks, or skin that’s [generally] oilier in summer and drier in winter.” If you ever wondered how your skin came to be this way, Roytberg will tell you that genetics plays a leading role, above environmental factors and personal lifestyle. Each step of your skincare regime can be curated to work in favour of both surfaces at play, where harmonising your skin’s hydration levels is key.
FACT: According to Roytberg, normal and dry skin types tend to lean more toward a combination skin type when you’re on your period.``
Your cleanser should serve as the backbone of your regime by manipulating the condition of your skin regardless of what products are placed on top. Choose cleansing products that work with, not against, your multi-faceted skin type; products that replenish and balance your skin’s natural oils. “Using a good, gentle cleanser twice a day,” Roytberg suggests, “will help cleanse the skin without over-drying or leaving any residue behind.”
Replacing oil with oil is also an effective way to rebalance moisture levels across the board – I love Frank Body’s Anti-Makeup Cleansing Oil. Alternately, opt for a gentle cream solution like Clarins’ Cleansing Milk containing extracts of soothing yellow gentian. Avoid cleansers that contain high levels of salicylic acid because this additive can further dry out the skin. On the contrary, cleansing balms that boast a thick, buttery consistency may feel a little over the top against areas that are producing generous amounts of sebum as it is.
TIP: “I recommend using a cream cleanser like Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser after an oil-based [one] as a double cleansing ritual… to ensure skin is fully cleansed,” Roytberg says.
To provide an even deeper clean to the skin, throw in an exfoliating product once or twice a week. By doing so, you’ll relieve the build-up of oil and bacteria, reducing the likelihood of developing acne. It’s a common misconception that the larger the pores, the more sebum secreted. Roytberg instead says this theory probably works in reverse, in that the secretion of sebum itself can enlarge pores. “If sebum can’t discharge freely, pores can become wider and more clearly visible, and pimples may form.” Regardless of whether you opt for an acidic exfoliant or granular liquid, skin will look and feel more even with the removal of surface-level grime and dead skin cells. LUMA’s Crushed Pearl Facial Polish boasts botanical grape seed oil – an ingredient praised for its nourishing and protective abilities when used on the skin. A toner can also be a great addition to your cleanser routine when the correct product is used. Moisten a cotton pad in your toner of choice and mark out the most oil-prone areas of your face only. Naturally hydrating ingredients, like cucumber in Mario Badescu’s Special Cucumber Lotion, will act as a suitable replacement. Even the oiliest of T-zones can still hide underlying dryness.
Tip: The further up an ingredient is listed on a product, the higher the content level of that ingredient will be. You can ensure you’re getting the most out of key ingredients before buying.
You’ll be misguided in believing a rich cream will act as a cure-all, since your oiliest areas need no such thing. When it comes to moisturiser, a lightweight formula containing hydrating hyaluronic acid should cover all bases (oily or otherwise). Prior to sleep, apply a refreshing gel cream that will sooth the skin and absorb in a flash, like Tarte Cosmetics Rainforest of The Sea Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost Moisturizer or Glow Recipe’s Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer. Come morning, opt for a shine controlling moisturiser like Bioderma’s new Sébium Shine-Control Moisturiser or La Roche-Posay Effaclar Mat.
TIP: Combination Skin or not, it’s important to always apply sun protection. Prior to makeup application, apply an SPF. Invisible Zinc’s Sheer Defence Facial Moisturiser SPF50 is great for combination skin as it sits incognito under foundation without the greasiness or scent of a traditional sunscreen.
As with moisturiser application, multi-masking is the way to go. Apply residue-removing charcoal, like that in FORMULA 10.0.6’s Take Back Control Oil-Controlling Mud Mask, to oily areas. This charcoal and cacao hybrid is designed to decongest pores and hydrate the skin respectively. Likewise, Fresh’s Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask can be applied to the T-Zone, while the brand’s hydrating Rose Face Mask be applied along the cheeks. If you’d prefer a sheet mask, The Body Shop’s Seaweed Balance Sheet Mask is an easy one-size-fits-all option that contains refreshing aloe vera your whole face will benefit from.
TIP: If acne is a concern, manage your combination skin first before reaching for acne-targeted solutions. Until then, minimise your use of silicones to allow pores to breathe easily.

for the pretty asks: perfume and masque
perfume - as far as actual perfumes go my favorites are Dior’s Diorissimo and Jo Malone’s Blackberry & Bay, but if we’re talking about smells in general my favorites are rosewater, fresh baked bread, wet grass, fresh apples, autumn air, and berry pies
masque - my skincare routine is a bit long because i love skincare and see it as a time for self care, so here we go (just doing my night routine bc my morning routine is way more boring)
cleansing balm first, i use the inkey list oat cleaning balm or glow recipe papaya sorbet enzyme cleansing balm
for cleanser my favorite is oskia renaissance cleansing gel but i’m out so i’m currently using glossier milky jelly cleanser.
i like masks a lot, so most days i will use one after i wash my face. my favorites are the ole hendriksen phat glow facial, milk makeup watermelon brightening mask, and the first aid beauty 5 in 1 bouncy mask (though i no longer support first aid beauty so when i’m out i’m gonna need to find a replacement for that one)
then for toner i have a couple i switch between. I like pyunkang yul essence toner, i’m from mugwort toner, and cosrx propolis synergy toner.
after that i use wishtrend’s mandelic acid 5% skin prep water (literally the best gentle exfoliant ever, i don’t use it if i use the ole hendricksen mask though)
for serums i use peach & lily glass skin serum and grace & stella say hi to hydration serum
then i use a spot treatment (either the inkey list succinic acid acne treatment or the i’m from mugwort spot gel) and typology q10 3% + huile de macadamia around my eyes
for moisturizer i use klair’s midnight blue calming cream
i have super dry skin so my last step is either an oil or a sleeping mask. for oils i either use acure 100% plant squalane or typology macérat huileux de carotte bio. for sleeping masks i like saturday skin yuzu vitamin c sleeping mask or purito dermide cica barrier sleeping pack
