Writing prompt: 2 people dancing that either shouldn't be dancing together or are dancing at an inappropriate time.

Ohh, I’m always weak for some courtly dancing. Thanks for this prompt! Characters Used: Polly and Septimus from The Glittering Queen. Approx. 950 Words. As always, feel free to send an ask about anything you might be curious about.

Polly disliked balls at the best of times, not the least because she was forced to be in attendance, and everyone used her given name. Apollina. It sounded like they were all angry at her. Most likely were, all things considered. Half of her inner circle still called her a child behind her back, and no-one seemed to be able to stop mentioning how short she was.

Did they think Queens were born, rather than made? Did they think she’d be a natural without a lifetime of tutelage?

No. She was a shopkeep dressed up in golden silks topped with a crown of flowers, wingless and uninspiring.

At least this time, they were welcoming back Princess Moraga. Polly had enjoyed her time with the princess of the Shadowed Court, who was just as short and just as flightless, though she made up for it for her countless tiny teeth, each one sharp as a needle. Beautiful, giggling, and friendly.

But Polly couldn’t spend the entire Ball chatting with her friend. Courtiers and vying suitors asked for one dance after another – Rictovarus not the least among then – and it would be unmentionably rude to refuse even one dance. Her feet hurt, her head spun, and she needed some air. Where were her ladies in waiting when she needed them?

The music lulled finally, and Polly returned her current partner’s bow politely, already planning on making her way to the gardens for a few minutes at least.

Someone approached behind her. “Majesty?”

Any frustration she might have felt faded at the familiar rough bass of his voice. Polly turned to see Septimus, still as damnaby tall as ever. He kept his head bowed, dark feathered wings folded in politely, in case anyone came too close. Polly didn’t miss the ceremonial blade strapped to his side, still sharp despite appearances. “Where’s Mor?”

“Outside. She may wish to see you out there.”

Polly grinned, understanding what he meant. “What timing. I was just hoping to head there myself.” Mor might have been outside, and she would always be happy to see Polly, but she hadn’t sent for Polly herself. She allowed Septimus to guide her away from the dancing.. He parted the crowd easily, a massive brute of a fae who had no business wearing a gentleman’s clothes. Polly almost looked like a porcelain doll, walking beside him as they passed the massive doors to the ballroom, crystalline and glittering. The moon shone brightly above them, and guests and courtiers walked and fluttered here and there. A pixie no bigger than Polly’s thumb darted over to adjust a flower in her headpiece, and flew off again into the woods.

But Septimus continued walking her through to the hedge maze, where nightblooms lit it up just enough to see the maze hobs that might be spending their own evenings in revelry.

“It’s not that I don’t like dancing, you know. I like it plenty when it’s just with a friend.” She had practised for hours back in Clembay, waiting for Will to return from his latest voyage. Doubtful she’d ever see him again. Or her mother. A tug in her chest had her looking down again as they walked, around another corner, and another, until the world was a distant memory. The hedge was difficult that way. It liked to make you think nothing else existed. That you’d never been anywhere in the world but the maze.

Polly stopped Septimus before they went too deep with a hand on his arm – though she forgot what she was originally going to say. “You still wear that old charm?”

“Oh –” He pulled away quickly, subconsciously hiding his hands at first before realizing who he was with. Carefully, Septimus pulled back his sleeve to reveal a worn leather strap adorned with two gemstones and a silver pendant in the shape of a feather. “Yes. I do.”

Something new tugged in her chest, though she set it aside quickly, opting to focus on the bit of shame creeping up at seeing some of her old work. “It’s not real. You know it’s only a bit of mortal superstition, right?”

“I feel safer with it on.”

She smiled despite herself and reached out to take his hand without thinking, to see the charm more closely. “Let me at least make you a new one. This looks like it’s falling apart.”

“I like this one.”

She looked up suddenly – hadn’t realized she’d pulled him so close. Her ears burned, and she made to let him go.

Septimus took her hand instead. He was gentle despite the gloves, barely touching her hand, almost afraid of breaking the fragile truce between them, and he stooped to speak softly, barely a whisper in her ear. “Will you ask me to dance?”

The flush spread from her ears to her face, and she looked up, trying to figure out if this was wise or not. She wanted to – she desperately wanted to dance with someone safe, someone she knew and trusted as a friend. But if any of the pixies caught sight of this and sent word back to her chamberlain …

She inhaled deeply, spinning a glamour around them, hoping it would be enough to make them seem like two guests, rather than the Queen, and the visiting princess’s Shield.

“Sir Rivven,” she said, almost breathless. If asked, they could both say Polly had been the one to ask. That she’d simply wanted to dance and he was the closest one there. No scandal, no trouble. It would just be a moment or two to catch her breath from the festivities, and nothing more than that. “Would you please distract me from this miserable evening with a dance?”

the green of the forest and the blue of the sky are the colors they chose to adorn themselves with, colors they could drink in for as long as they could want to. but they are not the only colors that follow them. the earthy browns of their horns and their fur, the shiny wheat yellow of their hair, the vivid green that’s wrapped around their body and shines in their eyes all trail after them as well. and the twinkling blues and purples that surround them as they watch the night sky, dipping to cascade over their shoulders in a cape made of starlight. all of these are the colors that follow this watcher.

they look so small, so unassuming at first glance, small horns, floppy ears, and freckle-flowers, wandering around the ship barefoot, smiling as easily as the sun shines. they are themself, of course, always, but even still it’s enough to give pause when they strip at the bathhouse, seeing the bruises and scrapes and scars of battle that decorate their skin, and the hints of lean muscle underneath. they are small, maybe, and sunny, but that does not negate how dangerous a foe they are.

seren has known many weapons in their lifetime, wielded and suffered, but not all remembered. wands and rifles fit easily into their hands, and somehow the weight of a mace did too. really, though, all of those came second. they could do so much with a thought, crush, splinter, pierce. use peoples’ phantasmal insides to break their tangible outsides. it was... rather unnerving when anyone else thought about it for too long.

seren knows of many animals, but only has experience with a few. they know stories of falcons and snakes and turtles and panthers, but does not remember learning them. caring for cats and rabbits and chickens is much the same, during the few occasions they help a local corral their livestock. the one that always makes them light up, though, their favorite, were bats. as dusk fell, they’d watch the diminutive shadows flitting from tree to tree, grinning and pointing them out to whoever was with them.

a brigandine and cape, forest green, sky blue, and white, are their battle armor, heavy but maneuverable. it is what they choose to wear for the necessity of it, but outside of battle it is not something they’d choose. they favor light shirts and tunics, open necklines and half sleeves, pants cut at the knee, secured with a sash that flutters after them when they run. an item cherished is their cape, the cape of the fallen star, that surrounds them in the beauty of the night sky and makes them a sight to remember on the few occasions they wear it.

Doll Inventory Part 12: My Main Doll Box

The last 9 dolls from my my doll box, though most of these shifted down towards the bottom as I was taking out and sorting through my dolls for these inventory posts. 

- 1st row Right and Left side are both Liv Dolls by Spin Master. I always really liked these dolls, liked their, by default, articulated bodies and the wig swapping system.

- 2nd row Left side is a Mattel Harry Potter Ginny Weasley doll. her proportions are weird but I like her. Her hair color looks great!

- 2nd row Right side is a Hasbro Star Wars Episode 1 Ultimate Hair Queen Amidala Doll. I got her at a thrift store and she was surprisingly complete save for her instructions which makes figuring out how to do any of the “ultimate hair” stuff a little tricky.

- 3rd row Left side is a Mattel Aquaman Movie Mera Action doll. Her Proportions are weird, I think she uses a WWE Divas body, and her face just looks… off. I’ve always had a hard deciding if this is just Mattel Quality control at it’s finest or if she’s supposed to have this wonk look to her.

- 3rd row Right side is a Mattel Aquaman Movie Royal Gown Mera Action doll. Same face and proportion issues. Her outfit is nice though the big blue thing on the back makes it difficult to store her, and her outfit gets glitter EVERYWHERE.

- 4th Row Left Side is a Mattel Barbie Signature Justice League Movie Mera. The Aquaman Action doll mera looks a little more like amber heard, but this doll came out much much better, and personally I like her more armored justice league look a lot more.

- 4th row Left Side is a Marvel Rising Secret Identity Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider/Spider-Gwen doll. I really spider-gwen, and was super happy when these dolls got announced. Unfortunately I could never find the regualr Gost spider doll in retail but saw the less articulated Secret Identity version and got her immediately. I Cut her har shorter to more closely resemble the Comics and Into the Spider-Verse. Kinda not a fan of her face and definitely not a fan of that side glance.

- 5 row doll is a Jakks Pacific 1999(?) Holiday Elegance doll (in some fashionistas clothes because it was 5:30 am and I was tired lol). The Holiday elegance dolls are pretty much just off brand holiday barbies that I think were only sold at Toys R Us. I found her at a thrift store about a year ago and her hair was a nightmare. A few months ago I decided to cut her hair short because I just couldn’t deal with her nightmare mane. Really happy with how it came out though I might need to flatten it out a bit. I actually really really like her off brand barbie face, it looks really cute IMO.

These are last photos I took for now, I still have the dolls in their own boxes outside of my main box, My backpack of fixer upper, future reroot, and other Misc. Barbies and heads, my Box of Frozen dolls (mostly Dolls of Princess Anna), and some other action dolls I have scattered about.
