Paul Stunkard - glassmaker
Lilac Bouquet, diameter 10 cm, Paul Stankard, 2005. Master glassmaker Paul Stunkard (b. 1943, Attleboro, Massachusetts) creates stunningly beautiful images of plants and flowers encased in clear glass paperweights. In 1961, Stunkard began studying glassmaking at Salem Community College. After graduating as a glassblower, he worked in industry for 10 years blowing glass flasks, beakers, and other laboratory items before he began experimenting with creating glass art in his garage. There’s a giant roaming around the countryside destroying everything in their path. Usually it’s large swaths of forests or farmland that they simply trample over and move on, but last week the giant walked straight through a town as if it wasn’t there — crushing homes underfoot and plowing through the local market.
You’ve had enough.
Taking your sword, a lantern, and your trusted horse, you ride out to the feared giant’s lair to slit its throat while it sleeps.
You arrive while everything is cold and asleep — entering the vast open cavern where the massive form of the monster lays across the floor on its side. Lantern in hand, you creep up to its face and raise your sword. However, as you do, the giant stirs. Its maw opens wide with a yawn big enough to easily swallow you whole, and you hesitate fearfully.
The thing’s eyes blink open, pupils dilating as they focus on you, barely much taller than one of its eyes. You fear that this is the end of you; a sharp inhale like a gust of wind rushes past as the giant wakes.
“I.. I can see? I can see you!”
This is it, the end. Your sword clatters to the ground as you begin begging for your life, but you’re interrupted by the giant.
“No, I.. I haven’t seen anyone in so long!”
Hesitantly, you ask what they mean. When you mention the whole town full of other people they destroyed, the giant sits up slightly, appalled.
“I did no such thing! I would never use my strength to hurt those weaker than me! That would be cruel.”
After a confusing conversation, you realize: the giant — a rather kindhearted person, as it turns out — is extremely nearsighted. They’re so tall that they can’t see where they’re walking, and so big they can’t tell when they’re stepping on something. They only saw you because you were about a foot from their face, and they were only wandering around in search of food.
Now it’s you and the terrifying-looking (but actually rather nice) giant against the rest of the world who (rightfully) sees them as a monster. …and they don’t even know if you’re with them 99% of the time.
#Just a story thought for y’all#Brought to you by my shitty vision (but only in one eye)#Idk maybe you can contract a glassmaker to create some REALLY big lenses#Imagine a giant blindly fumbling for their glasses only to pick up a tiny instead#*places tiny on bridge of nose* I.. still can’t see#g/t#giant/tiny

How/Why did your ocs become immortal? How long have they all been alive, and how do they feel about their immortality?
So, Caelan and Kore are both magicians. Magic in my universe automatically comes with a free immortality guarantee. With that being said! Kore was an alchemist looking for the secret to eternal life, and she discovered it. Her magic hadn't kicked in yet, so she wasn't immortal at the time, but when she took her own serum to test if it worked on humans, it IMMEDIATELY set off all her magic all at once. Along with turning her immortal and giving her access to magical power, the stress of all that magic hitting her at once turned some of her hair permanently white.
Sylvia, however, is the outlier of the two. She is a 100% bona-fide normal human with not a magical bone in her body. However, she ticked off an ancient sorceress who cursed her to immortality when she was roughly 30 (actual number 27, but that's very arbitrary)
Caelan Jr. and Sylvia were both born sometime in the 6th century AD, about 15 years apart from each other (Caelan's older in terms of years, but he's eternally 17)
Caelan's magic kicked in to save his life from disease. Sylvia's immortality, as earlier stated, came as a curse.
Kore was born much earlier, sometime a bit before Alexander the Great in Greece.
Caelan is pretty fond of his immortality. Teenagers tend to think they're unkillable, and in his case, that's true (he can still be cast into a state worse than death though, so. Be careful, dude)! He LOVES that he has enough time to try everything the world has to offer. The one thing he's not SUPER fond of is how he's stuck at 17, because adults tend to treat him like a kid. Which he is, but he's also a super responsible immortal being who raised a whole child, thank you very much
Kore has a more nuanced view on her immortality. On the one hand, she MADE her own immortality (sort of), so she's very proud of that feat. And being immortal gave her the chance to finish the other side of her work; figuring out how to take immortality away. With that being said, she was trapped in a tree for about 8 or 9 centuries, which was none too fun. And one of the reasons she was figuring out immortality was because she was sick of magicians/gods stepping all over mortals and she wanted a way to fight back and kill them. So for her, immortality and magic at large are both a boon and a very dangerous curse
Despite the fact that her immortality was cast as a curse, Sylvia's learned to see it as a good thing. For her, immortality gives her the chance to help people she otherwise couldn't help. She becomes a field medic during WW1 because she, unlike others, can survive the chlorine and mustard gas. Even if it wrecks her health for eternity, she thinks it's worth it to save lives. For the first century or so, though, she DESPISES her immortality, since it means all of her loved ones (sans Caelan) got old and died without her. She and Wolf had JUST cleared how they felt about each other, and now she can't be with him, and that tears her up for a long while. She always remains a little stuck in the past, mourning the loss of the life she would have had without the curse.

i think it's sooooooooo rude that people can't eat glass. i just want it to be like a mix of caramel and ice, is that so much to ask for? so that if i roll a piece of glass around in my mouth and i'm patient, it'll melt and get chewy but if i'm impatient i can just go crunch crunch crunch and swallow it to take another bite?
#fucked-up and horrible that this isn't possible#no i don't have pica i just was reminded of Glassmaker and also i'm hungry

girl gelp i literally woke up thinking about dwarven anatomy and specifically about sand and beach dwarves..... i am so autistic about this....
#crops#sand dwarves are built not to withstand the mines but for the heat of deserts and sandstorms. theyre skilled glassmakers.#beach dwarves are built to survive tropical storms and hurricanes and high water pressure. they carve driftwood and craft with beach glass-#--shells and shark teeth that wash ashore but never take more than they need#i think milder climates and environments (fields plains etc) dont have 'native' dwarves bc they dont suit dwarven lifestyles and natures#i have a lot of opinions abt dwarves im sorry but. yeehaw#for the most part bc there is no use for their wiry beards beachborne are free to grow or cut them as they please#their beards prevent black lung/sand/spore inhalation in other environments but it doesnt help with diving#(in my head diving is a huge part of the cultural trade of beachborne dwarves)#im sorry my brain likes to play with concepts for fantasy species like dolls!!! i love fantasy genetics!!!!!
