Hamlet Liveblog 2011, Act 3, Scene 2

In which I share the best parts of my notebook where I went through the whole text of Hamlet, line by line

3.2.1-2 "as I pronounced it to you, trippingly on the tongue" - dance with the words and make them your own

3.2.4-6 for in the very torrent, tempest, and, as I may say, the whirlwind of passion, you must acquire and beget a temperance that may give it smoothness. Hamlet wants to be subtle so he tells the Players to do the same (but his plan fails at the subtlety thing, whoops!)

3.2.9-10 "to split the ears of the groundlings, who for the most part are capable of nothing but inexplicable dumb-shows and noise" - here, Shakespeare makes fun of bad actors current Will: I mean in this exact line he's making fun of the audience members, but yes, hamlet spends most of the beginning of this scene making fun of bad actors, that's the literal point. silly past me

3.2.43-64 AKA HAMLET/HORATIO!!! lol, gotta love my enthusiasm here 💚

3.2.43 "Here, sweet lord, at your service" - affection and respect and submission

3.2.49 "Why should the poor be flattered?" - sounds like an insult, but he means it to show that he's sincere - Horatio and his family honor! current Will: honestly, rereading this whole little speech with "that no revenue hast but thy good spirits," and "let the candied tongue lick absurd pomp" Hamlet just seems really rude to everyone and it's so funny that i took this as totally sincere and nice. also i have no clue why i wrote about Horatio's family honor - did i have him briefly confused with Laertes??

3.2.53 "Since my dear soul was mistress of her choice" - SO MUCH SUBTEXT; he couldn't choose to keep his father alive but he could choose in this, and it is Horatio he chose

3.2.62-64 "and I will wear him in my heart's core, ay in my heart of heart, as I do thee" - COULD IT BE ANY MORE CANON?!

3.2.78-9 "If a steal aught the whilst this play is playing, and scape detecting, I will pay the theft" nooo! Horatio, you don't have to take on everyone's burden for yourself! Though that's what he's always done; by the end of it all he's the only one who doesn't pay - with his life, at least, but what he ended up with may be the worst deal, because he can't not-be current Will: it's good to see that i've always had that thought about this line and how he ends up paying for it

3.2.82-120 Hamlet's a punny guy, but cruel

3.2.93 "It was a brute part of him to kill so capital a calf there" - play on Brutus and Capitol; but also a calf is an innocent creature that gets sacrificed, like Polonius treats Ophelia, or Polonius himself ending up dead because of Hamlet

3.2.103-105 country matters=cunt, nothing=vagina, Hamlet=DICK current Will: i'm the funniest person in the world, omg

3.2.125-7 OPHELIA: Will he tell us what this show meant? HAMLET: Ay, or any show that you'll show him: be not you ashamed to show, he'll not shame to tell you what it means. so Stoppard wasn't just making it up! [the Players exhibitionism]

3.2.134-5 "Tis brief my lord" "As woman's love" - She's still trying to hang onto him and correct his behavior, but he just keeps mocking her. Methinks his love is far briefer than hers. Or he's really hurt by her returning the favors. Or he's really talking about Gertrude. Or he's only pretending to be cruel to fit in with perception of him as mad. current Will: these were some really interesting thoughts, but I think now that there's no such thing as "pretending" to be cruel. If you're hurting someone it doesn't matter if you actually mean the things you're saying because they're not in on the joke, so you just are cruel.

3.2.165-6 "A second time I kill my husband dead / When second husband kisses me in bed" - Hamlet says pretty much the same thing in the closet scene

3.2.261-4 Hamlet asks twice if Horatio saw Claudius's guilt and he responds very calmly and patiently

3.2.269-70 "vouchsafe me a word with you" - Guil wants assurance of something, even if it's not his purpose or identity "Sir, a whole history." - Hamlet is so happy his plan worked that he's not even angry at Guil anymore and now they can be friends 3.2.279 "put your discourse into some frame and start not so wildly from my affair" - Guildenstern just wants a frame of reference :( current Will: clearly I was pulling from the tom stoppard characterization of Guil groping for meaning in the dark (and a lot of the notes coming up are just line notes for my ideal staging) but I think it's very interesting that I thought Hamlet was being friendly, because I usually see him play it absolutely disrespectfully

3.2.293-95 "Therefore no more, but to the matter, my mother you say" When he was talking to Guil he had friendly banter, but now he's all business - he knows the best way to hurt each of them "Then thus she says" - Rosencrantz hesitates a bit before he answers because he doesn't understand Hamlet's brusqueness

3.2.303 "My lord, you once did love me" - R is so sad in this scene! He pauses after the first few words in case Hamlet wants to fill the silence, then stumbles forward. Emphasis on "once" like he's waiting for a present tense, and then the end is almost a question

3.2.304 "So I do still, by these pickers and stealers" - maybe grabs his hands and clasps them in a cruel parody of friendship, or kisses him hard and cruel and carnal current Will: wow, I was just determined to give Rosencrantz the worst time, wasn't I? this is tragic and I was correct

3.2.306-7 "You do surely bar the door upon your own liberty if you deny your griefs to your friends" Ros remembers what he said about Denmark being a prison and thinks he's helping. Also, he's coming around to Hamlet's point of view because this trip has been awful

3.2.327-8 "But these cannot I command to any utterance of harmony. I have not the skill" - Hamlet should have asked Rosencrantz because he would either know already, or figure it out intuitively

3.2.330 "you would pluck out the heart of my mystery" - he is a mystery to them and has a heart of parts current Will: i really wish I knew what i meant by that last phrase but it sounds cool and poetic!

3.2.339-344 camel - carries burdens for other people; weasel - duplicity and spying and lying; backed - supported or just partially weasel-like (somewhat sincere in whatever they're pretending to be); whale - big and blundering and in the ocean, but not on a boat, so it's free to go where it pleases :)

3.2.351 "Now could I drink hot blood" - Okay, Hamlet, slow down! Bloody revenge is one thing and reveling in it is quite another

3.2.354-5 "Let not ever the soul of Nero enter this firm bosom" he doesn't actually want to kill his mother, but doesn't want her to know this yet

god i dont remeber if they say it in the campaign(im realisting rn) but in bitb, i like to imagine the reason they never finsihed their dnd game, was because they all had a huge argument before rolan and kian left gallway. Like they were trying to finish their game in one final sesion, but than rand and rolan or someone got into an argument and rand grab his stuff and stormed off. Than rolan and kian left without saying goodbye.

And now 10ish years later and kian calls to ask if they wanna try to finsih their game and they dont know eachother anymore but all the hurt is still there and it comes up in arguments.

Okay after seeing your post about period dramas(which I totally agree with) I am begging you to read 'The Hands of the Emperor' by Victoria Goddard.

Legit the best book I have ever read.

The main character Kip, didn't start of as a noble but eventually became basically second to the emperor in power. He then dedicated his career to reforming the goverment. With such acts as;

-Fixing the postal system and creating sea trains (and making sure they reached EVERYWHERE).

-Rooted out corruption.

-Created stockpiles of food and supplies in case of disaster

-Impliment an annual stipend for everyone to alleviate poverty (also built homes for this) and allow people to pursue arts without having to be concerned over income.

-And so much more

The emperor, who was not meant to be emperor, who loves his people but hates his life and is just trying his best, is in full support of everything this man does.

The book starts quite late in his career so much of this acts are already done and it's just more goverment reforms, pure competence on his end, court intrige with and amazing focus on his relationship with the emperor, the emperors household and the relationship between his position and his culture.

Sorry to rant but I cannot explain how amazing this book is and also meets the points you have mentions, though the main character doesn't start as a noble. There is also heaps of fealty and yearning <3

A LOVE LETTER TO QSMPBLR

I saw my mutuals write those and decided that I also want to say a few words.

My whole life I loved being part of the communities. I’ve been heavily into fandoms since I was 10, and now 12 years later I can firmly state that QSMPblr community is definitely in my personal top 3 of all the fandoms I have been in.

It’s been such a fun and emotional and thrilling journey with so many ups and downs and I would never refuse to repeat it all over again. I met so many wonderful and incredible people because of this server that I can’t thank the universe enough.

All of my mutuals and followers made most of my 2023 so happy, and continue to do so in 2024, and I really need this joy with everything that happens outside the community itself.

(I am sorry this text is all over the place, I am struggling with concentration atm)

And I am so elated and a bit surprised for how many of you I became one of the favorites blogs here. I mean, I jumped from barely 150 followers to around 820 since september, and it’s all thanks to having so much fun liveblogging and theorizing with all of you.

Despite everything, I think Purgatory 1 was my favorite ever time period here. Yes, there was a lot of frustration and negativity but I don’t think I’ve ever felt such a comradery as back then, with my fellow Soulfire mains. I was in the post limit jail every single day, because I just could not stop chatting with all of you and reblogging incredible posts.

I also hold very dearly the moment, where Bad showed Tubbo the Soulfire Base Recreation. But the main reason is not even that this happened, but the fact that so many people on tumblr, in dms and even in Bad’s chat were LOOKING FOR ME, because they knew how much I’ve waited for that to happen. It was just so heartwarming to wake up to dozens of messages and mentions. I struggle with ‘nobody really cares if i am here or not’ syndrome a lot, so it made my day to see that people do.

I also want to say special thanks to some of you (even though each and single one of you deserve a separate paragraph). Under the cut:

@qtubbo and @mikaikaika. I love both of you so much, our 247 crew maybe on a kinda hiatus, but every moment we spent together is so special to me. We had so much fun, and I couldn’t ask for the batter gang to gash about the lore and cool posts together.

Back on my bullshit because now that I have a longer vacation going on I can tackle this again, this time with feeling. Also I had a break in between bc I remembered and forgot to mention that I was out and about for almost a week living in a flat to babysit animals while their owners were out of the country but I had been yearning for the ceiling. After Time got away from me a bit got brainfogged suddenly realized it is September already wtf. If I hadn't liveblogged the ceiling shenanigans I might've misremembered when that started too. Anyway.

Previously on Touch's ceiling shenanigans

And right now we are here:

Ceiling skeleton. The support beams are all askew as fuck and jammed into the the walls on both sides. I have thermal plastering ready for it's call to action as one of the walls with the holes is an outer wall and the cold will crawl through and try to get me without proper insulation. I am also currently busy with removing everything that has been lying about in this room (before it was the storage room for when I freshly moved in so a lot of stuff just.. floating about) because the crossbars do not inspire confidence in me that they will not drop weirdly when I loosen them up lol I also bribed my auntie to take me a few villages over (I do not have a car) to get some more supplies for the removal of the distemper paint and shit to seal of cracks were the ceiling and walls meet. Also... there is a cable duct in the corner right over the space were the oven will go and I figured it might be for the best to pry open the wall to sink it and for that I needed a different kind of quick-drying plaster which was also acquired. And then I thought yeah well, get some of those parquet mini fix thingies.. you know the idk how it is called but basically there are some scratches and dents in the floor in need of some TLC and I know how sanding down parquet and resealing it properly works but I also know how much time and shit that takes and I might at some point say "it is time" but it ain't this year or the next for sure. So mini fixes it is for now. I also have a different endboss now in this entire thing because see... I have a second door in this room to the outside of my driveway. I just have this second entry point to my abode which will be very handy once I work with some of my materials that need a lot of ventilation and shit. But anyway so... Somewhen in the past there was flooding I know this there is plenty of visible evidence of it all over my home that there went water were it was not supposed to go. But nowhere is it more apparent than this door.

There used to be parquet in between (it's a double door) and just look how fucking thick my outside walls are fucks sake and my dad removed that because it looked like one step away from having you meet the underside of the building and filled that all up with concrete but nothing more than that. I think he wanted to seal the doorway up permanently at some point and I am glad he didn't because I adore the second entry point. But yeahhh this is a bit of damage. I misremembered how much bc I had to temp seal this off for a bit because mice kept sneaking through these two doors into the house last winter along with the cold. So it kinda slipped my mind how rotten the wooden frames are and how even the concrete on the sides is all fucked up. Got some work ahead on that one. There is also a massive black spider somewhere in the woodbeams that I only caught a glimpse of before she scuttled in there and at some point we will probably make eye contact when I remove the rotten wood :')

And yeh this is no longer just the ceiling but like I said, am on vacation now so I try to get everything wrapped up soon and that includes this entry door along with the floor. Cross fingers the spider does not jump me she looked like she could beat my ass.
