@cauthon I'm 10 chapters in and obsessed, it's everything I want in a book. Thank you so much for your rec!!!
Okay after seeing your post about period dramas(which I totally agree with) I am begging you to read 'The Hands of the Emperor' by Victoria Goddard.
Legit the best book I have ever read.
The main character Kip, didn't start of as a noble but eventually became basically second to the emperor in power. He then dedicated his career to reforming the goverment. With such acts as;
-Fixing the postal system and creating sea trains (and making sure they reached EVERYWHERE).
-Rooted out corruption.
-Created stockpiles of food and supplies in case of disaster
-Impliment an annual stipend for everyone to alleviate poverty (also built homes for this) and allow people to pursue arts without having to be concerned over income.
-And so much more
The emperor, who was not meant to be emperor, who loves his people but hates his life and is just trying his best, is in full support of everything this man does.
The book starts quite late in his career so much of this acts are already done and it's just more goverment reforms, pure competence on his end, court intrige with and amazing focus on his relationship with the emperor, the emperors household and the relationship between his position and his culture.
Sorry to rant but I cannot explain how amazing this book is and also meets the points you have mentions, though the main character doesn't start as a noble. There is also heaps of fealty and yearning <3
Alexandra Rowland as did a Tor article on why you should read here:
https://www.tor.com/2021/10/20/you-should-really-be-reading-victoria-goddards-nine-worlds-series/
This sounds like my kind of novel!!! I'll check it out

Hi Joy. I really hope this won't be seen as a rude question because it is not meant as one (yeah I know always a great way to start out.)
What is the reason you cannot purchase the ebook version of hunger pangs on a nook device? Is it logistical, extra money required to do so, or is it simply not allowed because of its content?
I was just curious since I mostly use my nook to read everything now days. I have been meaning to read hunger pangs since its release but I dont really give myself much free time so it's only now I have tried to download it. I am not too comfortable with trying to figure out how to push a third party ebook file into my nook though I will likely figure it out eventually. I vaguely remember managing to do it with my old nook around 5 years ago I think...
Uuuh, it should be on Nook unless something went wrong in the last week since I got paid by Barnes and Noble…
Hold up let me check.
Edit: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/hunger-pangs-joy-demorra/1138354998
So this is just the flirting edition because I’m on mobile, but both versions are very much live and available on Nook/Barnes and Noble!
The only storefront I elected to avoid was GooglePlay because they’re a fucking nightmare and left my file pending approval for months after publishing. But if you buy the ePub from either my payhip or Gumroad it should auto load the file into their e-reader.
If this is an issue of Nook not showing me in their App Store, then I’m afraid I am unaware of why that’d be happening, but you should be able to login to your nook account and buy it just fine on desktop!
Edit: so I just logged into Nook on my mobile, and noticed that the only books I can view are “free samples” which is what it does with Kindle, so my guess would be if you are using an iOS device that they are trying to make you quit Nook and use their iBook app 🙃. The way around this is to login via browser and make the purchase there.
If this is happening on an android device or an actual book then I’ve got no idea what’s going on!

Hello, sorry if this is weird. I've seen people talk about this concept called "entitlement to art" as arguments against piracy or having to share art, and there's something about that train of thought that bothers me greatly that I don't know enough to refute. I know your big thing is copyright reform and open source art, so what I was wondering is do you happen to know anything about whatever this is? Is it good for reasons I don't know or is it a bad argument? Thank you if you reply!
I have thoughts on this long-stewing, and I may as well bring them out now.
So, to be blunt I do not give a shit about the sacred monopoly of the author via copyright, I care about ensuring creators get paid. These are not inherently the same, but too goddamn many people think they are.
Because, to be blunt, the internet is a post-scarcity system for distributing information. Reproduction of information; if you’re not attracted to things inherent to the dead-tree nature of traditional books; is basically infinite. This is the inherent nature of this system, to view people wanting it to operate as it should as “entitlement” is more than a little silly.
But, to a system built around rent-seeking on limited resources, IE, book sales, it is basically an existential terror, doubly so when they’ve built that limited nature into the system for making a living off of one of the few public services that wasn’t wholly murdered by Reagan.
So, we get the cries of how the Internet Archive’s system (Which at least tries to be sensible about what it bases its limits on) is an existential threat, and that people should just use the system public libraries do with ebooks.
But the thing is, that system is fucking terrible! It is terrible for libraries and users; overly-scarce for users and and overpriced for the libraries. And that is what the publishers want.
There could very well be a version of Controlled Digital Lending that also works to get the authors paid. The publishers are not gonna go for it. Because their endgame is that they don’t. The terrible truth is capital in any form of media production doesn’t want personal ownership like dead-tree books would inevitably convey, they want people to perpetually rent from them.
To view people telling that truth as entitled is horrifying
And, going for draconian copyright systems will inevitably hurt the artists outside of that bubble, because increased copyright enforcement is as steamroller through online artistic communities, attacking those works that depend on fair use and with it all works around them, devastating it so only already established players can survive in a form of net-gentrification.
When you destroy remix culture, the original works that accompany them or springboard from them are scattered to the four winds, because of how dependent culture is on remixing, from the sharing and iteration of blues to the modern issue of sampling that was also put under a corporate yoke and sold back at a premium price.
Again, the people defending draconian copyright expansion say this is a sad coincidence, but on the part of their bosses; it isn’t. They say that if they just would follow the rules it’d be okay, but that too is bullshit. Media often depends on unauthorized circulation or remixing of out-of-print works to keep works relevant (Mah Boi, Keep Circulating the Tapes), they just want to control when they pull the rug out to get back that exclusivity, while reaping the rewards of the free labor.
To view the acknowlegement of that truth as entitlement is punching down; at best.
And that’s not even getting into the hegemony of corporate control that the destruction of unauthorized archival represents. I’m sure those authors who support it have their reasons. I’m sure also the people who burned down the Library of Alexandria, or who destroyed all those original Doctor Who tapings had their reasons too.
History still does not look kindly on them. And to view people who want media to avoid that fate as “entitled” is also something history will not look upon kindly.
And, it’s a special kind of denial to say that these bad results on the part of the action by your bosses you’re advocating for are just tragic coincidences rather than the whole point of action on the publishers’ part.
Because, when you see them talk about it, you see that so much of it boils down to a view that there is no alternative. That either the system as it stands must be maintained, or they will be impoverished. That, to draw from Miss Gender-Neutral-Toilet herself, "There Is No Alternative"
Which leads to the point that, I think that there is an entitlement on the authors’ part. An entitlement to the protection of the current system that elevates them over the unwashed masses or artists not lucky enough to have big daddy publisher on their side.
Because they view it as their only source and they’re willing to throw everyone else under the bus to do so. Which, is understandable, but also the same motive as every Fox News viewer. You are not immune to middle-class paranoia that leads to you sacrificing everyone else (See also: Ao3 defenders, but that’s its own rant)
Like, I cannot be entirely unsympathetic when people like Chuck Wendig go “We have no social safety net,” but like… join the fucking club Chuck! None of the artists outside the system who you refuse to show solidarity with get that either! And we also have the looming sword of damocles hanging over our head in the form of potential mass-purges of our communities due to the copyright shit old-media artists keep bootlicking for! Maybe you should care about that rather than trying to maintain a system which; to be blunt, treats you like shit too!
Cause, if they kill the archive and make their form of ebook lending the only one, they’re not going to pay the authors better. They’re going to keep squeezing the authors more and more, carving out whatever gains they get from the bad system, they’ll just get extra delicious kromer from screwing the audiences and libraries too.
Cory Doctorow once wrote that there were two primary forms of wealth in the US, that maintained through labor and that maintained through property ownership. And he talked about how things went to shit when we threw away our gains from labor for the sake of gaining more wealth from property ownership, which the capital class proceeded to eat out lunch on and make a vital public good significantly worse for everyone while doing so.
Now, while he was talking about home ownership in this context, it 100% certainly also applies to wealth from copyright. Because, again, Cory fuckin Doctorow. And I think published creators should stand more with their artistic bretheren outside the system; whom copyright threatens to screw; instead of the bosses that impoverish culture and laborer alike. Prosperity from solidarity.
While I don’t think we have anywhere near the infrastructure to act on it (Hence why I look so dimly on Patricia Taxxon’s view of things), we need to start pushing for it and we need to do that now, and we need to resist any efforts made to core out sharing culture or circulation of out-of-print media in the meantime; because once a piece of media is gone, it’s gone for good.
To be blunt, if the economic model your livelihood is dependent on needs false scarcity to survive, it’s time for a new fucking economic model. Trying to cling to the old one is just its own form of entitlement.

WARNING: LONG POST! NO TRIGGERS - FEEL GOOD VIBES GUARANTEED! (Unless your heart is, like, literally made of stone!...)
ANYWAY!
So I'm going to tell you a bit about my Dad! 😍
The whole reason why I express myself creatively is because of my dad. My love of reading and writing comes from him. He is (along with my mum of course – if you want a lesson in equality and the example of “sensitive, new age man” my dad’s pic is under the definition) and always has been my biggest supporter – the person who is guaranteed to be in the front row cheering me on. I didn’t have a soccer mum growing up, I had a soccer DAD. Dad was the one who took me and my brother everywhere on the weekends! I was very lucky and privileged growing up – dad would take me to singing lessons, piano lessons, tennis lessons (I tried other activities too but I won’t mention them…basically cause I sucked lol). Dad was the one who listened and encouraged me when I wrote my first song – music was my absolute passion (and still is)and he would spend hours with me workshopping every performance I would prepare for, every recital...He was my Alpha before I knew what that term meant.
WHY AM I TELLING YOU ALL THIS???
I'm glad you asked - I'll tell you 😉
As most of you know - I have recently created my author page on Facebook. This year I have made a conscious effort to connect to those with like-minded interests. HP FANFIC! I’ve found my people!!! Specifically on the platforms Facebook and Tumblr (I still suck at it…but I’m trying!)…I’m also a lurker on Instagram.
MISSY GET BACK TO THE POINT!
Here it is: My dad is an Indi Author! I know! How BAMF is that?! He’s retired now, but back in the day he was an English and History teacher. He also taught English as a Second Language for a while and eventually moved into Higher Education in which he taught young adults with learning disabilities – his program was designed to teach them essential life skills (like budgeting, shopping, skills that would lead to getting a job) He would come home and tell me stories about his students and one of their favourite activities: Reading the newspaper together as a class and discuss the current events – dad was an amazing teacher and he is an amazing man.
When dad was an English teacher at High School, one of the activities he would run when teaching creative writing was an activity he had dubbed: “speed writing”. Now that I’ve become a part of fandom author community - I have literally only just put two and two together and realised my dad was running “sprints” in his classroom 😱😱😱
Again! What an absolute BAMF!
MISSY! YOU’RE RAMBLING AGAIN - GET BACK TO THE ACTUAL POINT!
Okay, Sorry! I'll try again...
Dad isn’t on social media (though mum is), he doesn’t use a mobile phone (but mum does – you see where I’m going with this?). As an independently published Indi-Author on Amazon (I’m gonna share the link – don’t worry), I’ve told him about the benefits of social networking. He’s been reluctant…I decided at the time not to push. Recently though, I shared with him the fact that I’ve been writing during Covid 19 – not songs and music, but stories. I told him I’ve found a safe haven in fanfiction – I’ve found people I wish I knew years ago! I’ve found friends who I’m now collaborating with (back in the day I was never in a band or anything like that). I’ve told Dad about my experience publishing my little ficlettes and stories on AO3 - how I was receiving reviews and feedback. I told him about ‘Kudos”.
His ears suddenly perked up and bless him – he said “Do you think your friends would look at my story too and do you think they would leave a comment?”
Well friends, now you *know* - I’m a daughter on a mission!
My dad’s alias is Raymond Jeffrey. His birthday is the 12th of December and I’ve been thinking...What can I possibly give the man who has literally fuelled my love of writing? Who has constantly encouraged my creativity. What does he truly want?
The answer is Kudos people!!!!!
My dad isn’t interested in the amount of sales or rankings his book gets – It’d be nice, but it won't stop him from writing his trilogy. He's already a thrid of the way through book 2!!! (BAMF!)
So friends, if I may be so bold - can I ask you to reach out and leave him a review on Amazon? Even if it is as simple as a phrase of encouragement to keep writing, to continue? The way we do in Fandom?
That would be simply magic!!!
I’m not asking you to buy his book, but if you have Kindle I’d love for you to give his original work a go and leave him a review.
You can download a free sample here:
https://www.amazon.com.au/God-Wills-Lucifers-Raymond-Jeffrey-ebook/dp/B07NTQ2C5T
Dad literally painted the artwork himself (and then had mum scan it as a PDF in order to upload it and then use it as a cover). My mum has been simply amazing – she’s his Alpha and has encouraged him on this life long goal to write a book.
Dad currently had 10 sales in total (some are purchases made by family from overseas) and recently he cheekily introduced himself to his new neighbour (my folks recently moved during Covid 19) as an ‘internationally selling author’(Omg Dad! 😆🤣😂 ). He's also hired a woman to professionally format and edit his book for SPAG – so his book has actually been professionally Beta’d (when I told him I had met people who loved Betaing for funsies he was shocked and also secretly I think he was a little jelly 🤭🤭🤭).
So yes, can you help me friends????? Be a part of this movement I’m trying to start?!
I would literally love for him to suddenly get a flood of reviews and have no idea why!
I plan to share this post with him for his birthday.
Thanks and gratitude friends!
Love from Missy xxxxx

Tech Review for Writers: reMarkable2
I got myself a piece of interesting tech this year in hopes it would get me from out in front of a computer screen more often. Meet the reMarkable2, a distraction free (i.e. it’s not connected to the entirety of the internet) e-ink tablet workhorse that’s easy on the eyes.
The reMarkable2 Tablet
First things first. The reMarkable2 tablet is not for everyone and your average person probably won’t find it the least bit useful. So let’s talk about why you don’t want this tablet first.
reMarkable 2 is not for you if:
– You want an eReader.  eReaders have a VERY DIFFERENT function than the reMarkable2. Yes, you can read PDFs on a reMarkable, but it’s more for *marking up* a PDF and commenting in the margins of a PDF. Not just reading. eReaders like Kindles and Nooks often have built in dictionaries, ways to bookmark pages or passages of text, etc…  that the reMarkable2 doesn’t have. You can search your documents for specific phrases and words and also highlight things in a light gray, but if you’re just looking for an eReader, I suggest a Kindle.
– You want a full functioning tablet that you can put apps on and surf the web with- If you’re looking for a full functioning tablet, you’ve missed the whole point of the reMarkable2. The main point behind reMarkable2 is so you can go to your creative place (wherever that may be) and brainstorm, free from ALL distractions. You can’t stop to surf FB or your Twitter feed on a reMarkable2, thus making it more likely you’ll stay on task and get more done.
– You want something with color so you can highlight because what you really want is a fully functioning ebook reader or tablet. This tablet is really more of a no frills brainstorming and note-taking tool for entrepreneurs, professionals, academics, and creatives (including engineers, writers, musicians, possibly artists if they like to sketch in black and white) who use a lot of black pens and plain paper.
I bought the tablet for the following reasons (which I wrote down BEFORE I received the device):
– I wanted an electronic notebook (not a tablet). I’m one of those people who goes through 3 packs of sticky notes every month, and countless notebooks every year. I am constantly jotting stuff down to keep myself focused and on track while running my own business and helping out at the family business.  My notes can be anything from putting together presentations, classes, and meetings, to extensive to-do lists for the day. Sometimes it’s just me keeping track of sales figures. As a result, my desk is always filled with papers and notebooks and I’m constantly searching for shit. The electronic notebook cleans up all this clutter and helps me organize my brain. (Have you seen my brain!? It’s a mess in there.)
– I  like to write freehand, especially when I’m plotting the next book or writing a blurb, or even writing a chapter – and it must be distraction free. This is something only fellow authors will understand. The fact that the reMarkable2 can convert handwritten notes to text sent via email has me excited because, if I’m lucky and it works, I won’t have to go through and transcribe all my handwritten notes. It basically saves me time by eliminating a step. I can copy/paste the note from my email into the appropriate file on my laptop. This will also save me the clutter and weight of carrying countless notebooks.
– I am involved with projects that require me to sketch out ideas for marketing and/or artwork. I do have tablets that can do this, but nothing that does it *well*. The closest is my Surface tablet, which can do a lot of things, but it still doesn’t feel like paper or allow me the fine detail paper allows. I’m hoping this tablet is a bit more responsive in this area. – I am forever printing out rough drafts of manuscripts for markup – wasting a ton of paper and toner in the process. All because I can’t edit on a backlit screen. My eyes get tired and I miss too many errors. If I can transfer my PDF drafts to the reMarkable and mark them up there with minimal errors left over, I could save some $$. I am actually estimating that I could easily save the cost of the reMarkable2 in 6 months to 1 year’s time by not having to purchase the paper, pens, and toner I usually go through in that time frame.  Plus, these marked up manuscripts often end up in a stack on my office floor for 6 months to a year after publication.
– I am forever having to read PDFs of laws and regulations for the family business, and while I usually use them on the computer, I sit in front of a computer 8-13 hours a day. I need a non-backlit screen for reading in the evenings just to give my eyes a break.  Yes, I imagine I could do the same with a Kindle paperwhite, but I may just want to jot some notes in the same way I’d mark up a paper copy. I’m still a pen and paper girl. I’m really hoping the reMarkable is my replacement for that (most of the time anyway).
reMarkable2 test to sample the pen styles.
Some considerations I took into account before purchasing:
A lot of customers complained that it took too long to receive the reMarkable or to get support. From all of the research I did, and in reading their website, it’s clear to me that this company caters to academia and businesses. I ordered my reMarkable2 on January 16, 2021, and had it in my hands by January 25, 2021. 9 days. I also ordered it and paid for it through my business. I don’t know if that’s actually why I got mine so fast, but I wouldn’t be surprised. That said, I do think the company should work a little harder to increase their customer service efficiency.
With regard to customer support – the website clearly states it can take up to 10 business days for support to get back to you. And a lot of the things people seem to be complaining about have troubleshooting instructions on the website. Clearly people weren’t going to the website to try to look up their issue through the support FAQs, which likely would have helped them out sooner.  They were just contacting support immediately, and angry when they weren’t getting a response after 3 days, when it’s clearly stated on the website that it can take up to 10 days due to the fact that reMarkable is a small company. But like I said earlier – they would be smart to increase their customer service team.
reMarkable’s folios are a custom fit and really pretty, but a bit pricey. I made the tablet more affordable by skipping the upgrade on the pen, because a friend of mine got the eraser feature and she wasn’t digging it initially (she loves it now), and I purchased a relatively nice folio from Amazon for under $30 (with no magnets – research told me magnets can cause dead spots in the screen of the reMarkable2). You can also just buy a 10″-11″ tablet sleeve and it would work much the same. There are also universal tablet folios that will fit 10″-11″ tablets that are free of magnets and will likely work just fine. All for under $20 bucks — even a few in faux leather. Remember that a case should protect your investment, not just make it *look* sharp.
Right out of the Box.
Right out of the box I set the reMarkable up and started using it for brainstorming. Here were my first impressions:
1. It really is pretty damn close to writing on paper.
2. You can rest your damn hand on the screen and it won’t fuck things up or make it wobble as with traditional tablets.
3. My handwriting actually looks like my handwriting and you have almost the same control with this as you would with real pen and paper.
4. The interface is simple and intuitive and anyone who uses computers and tablets day and in day out will have no issues figuring this out.
Now some thoughts on the features:
Handwriting to Text: As an author who likes to occasionally spend time writing the old fashioned way, one of the things that attracted me to this tablet was its ability to translate handwriting to text. No writer wants to have to transcribe their written notes and waste all of that time. So of course I tested it with my horrific handwriting, vs purposefully trying to be neat, and the reMarkable2 was able to convert my chicken scratch into actual text that I could read. I was able to turn the handwritten notes into a PDF, but I was also able to send the handwriting converted to typed text as the body of an email, where I was able to cut and paste it into any program I wanted. I took it further and wrote 1000 words (about 8.2 pages) longhand. It converted all the pages to text in one swoop and I was able to copy/paste it into my manuscript. While there was a little formatting and editing involved — it was a lot faster than retyping handwritten notes. WIN!
Handwriting for conversion test.
Conversion successful
PDF Transfer, Markup, and Signature: Transferring PDFs to the reMarkable is easy. You simply download the app on your phone and your desktop, and you can take any pdf from either device and import it onto your reMarkable, which you can then markup. I sent myself a slew of PDFs that I had to read and markup. It’s amazing how much more focused I am on a screen like this. I really got the same experience with editing on a digital PDF as I did with editing on a paper copy. My only caveat is that I don’t have more space to make notes since the margins are a bit small on the screen and there’s no “back of the page” to carry notes over to. I can likely manage. Despite that – what a great experience. Goodbye manuscripts all over my office floor!  Hello being able to drag editing work with me wherever I go!
You can also transfer your PDFs that don’t have an electronic signature option to the device, sign them, and send them back. Talk about HANDY since I do that a few times a month by default. This just eliminates the print/sign/scan. Now I just have to transfer it to the device, sign the document, and email it straight back to whoever sent it.
Digital Planners may be something I look into for 2022 because reMarkable actually makes them feasible. I tried a tester digital planner, courtesy a friend, on my reMarkable and I have to say – it offers just as much satisfaction as a paper planner. Plus, you can SEARCH large pdfs. It won’t find search terms in your handwriting, but it will find it in your PDF. That’s definitely a handy feature when you’re working with 500 page PDFs. That said, the tablet saves your place (last page you visited) as you’re navigating a PDF, so no need to search for the place you left off. However, there is no way to bookmark multiple pages.
ePub Reading: suppose I could sideload books as ePubs, but I really have no use for this feature. If I want to read ebooks, I use my kindle or the Kindle App on my tablet or phone. Unless I start doing editing of ePubs or want to check out an ePub format for something?  I didn’t buy this as an eReader, and it is terribly lacking as an eReader. Where the reMarkable excels is as a tool for marking up documents. So my guess is it would be great for that if you have a lot of files in ePub format that you have to go over. You also can’t change font sizes for easier reading. You can zoom in and zoom back out to regular size. That’s it. (And this is another reason this is not an eReader.)
Storage: Storage is a little over 6GB (you do not pay for the reMarkable website cloud-sync). But even with about 15 PDFs (some of them really long) on my reMarkable at any given time, I was only at .38 GB.
reMarkable2 Storage
File System: Like I said earlier – the system is highly intuitive and easy to use. I made folders for my most common notebook uses, then I moved the appropriate PDFs to those folders, and created any notebooks I needed for those folders.
Exporting: You can export as .PNG, .SVG, and PDF.  Handwriting to text can only be sent as text via the body of an email. This is actually great for writing because then you just have to copy/paste from your email into your Word Doc, Google Doc, or Scrivener.
Importing: Imports PDFs and ePubs.
Templates: The templates are great. I generally only use graph paper, plain, and lined paper myself. But I could see how a lot of these would be useful to people. The to-do list is a crappy template just because it requires you to hide your menu to use it (you can’t tick the the checkboxes until you do this). To hide the menu tap the circle in the upper left top of the menu bar. So if you want a partial page to-do list, you can easily make your own checkbox lists using the graph paper option. There are also dot pages for the folks into bullet journaling.
A small sampling of reMarkable2 Templates
Search Feature: You can search within a PDF, but not through your own handwritten text. You must be in the PDF to search it, otherwise you can only search for file names. You can not search across documents for a phrase or word. So if you’re looking for something with the same search capabilities as a laptop or possibly a tablet, you won’t find it here.
Zooming: You can zoom in on PDF documents and write on them while zoomed. However, you cannot change font sizes to make reading easier.
Battery Life:  On days where I used it heavily (about 4-5 hours), I was using around 15% power in a day because I didn’t put it in airplane mode. Three days of 4-5 hours a day use drained my battery to 50%. So me, as a heavy user, not in airplane mode, will likely get 6-7 days out of a single charge. Possibly more since clearly not every day will be a heavy use day. The device does go to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity.
Pen:The pens are a bit pricey. I did not buy the expensive pen with the eraser and I’m okay with that. But $60 for a pen is still a bit — ouch.
Pen Nib: I am expecting I will be one of those poor unfortunate souls who will be replacing pen tips every 3-4 weeks during heavy use. Luckily the pen itself doesn’t use batteries. The pen nibs seem reasonable in price, just be sure to order a new pack with your device and when you start that pack, order another as shipping times on those can take a week or two depending where you are and how efficient your mail service is. You don’t want to accidently run out and find yourself without a pen. Yikes.
Security: You can add a password to your reMarkable to keep prying eyes out. But if you’re like me and self-employed, that’s not really an issue. Your remarkable has Wi-Fi, yes, but you can put it in airplane mode to cut the connection. Plus, it only syncs to your cloud storage. There really aren’t any entry points for viruses or people hacking into your device. But then I’m also not a tech person. Let’s just say I highly doubt security will be a huge issue on this thing. Besides, anyone who wants to take a peek at my tablet would likely find themselves bored stiff, unless they like reading really rough first drafts of speculative fiction.  LOL
Backup/Download: You can easily transfer your files back to your computer by opening the app and simply exporting your finished documents, etc… to your computer, backup drive or cloud drive. You can also just email yourself a copy to make it super easy.
My Wishlist:
1. I wish I could add or append new, handwritten pages to an existing PDF. That would definitely solve the space issue. Now, I just make notes in a different file and jog back and forth between the PDF and the notes, which is a little annoying, but doable. One way to solve this issue would be to save all your PDFs to double spaced. It might make markup a little easier. I’ll try that with the next books to go under the editorial knife.
2. I wish there were cheaper alternative covers. My $17 cover looks great and protects my tablet. reMarkable could easily come up with a few additional low-cost choices here. The ultra professionals are still going to buy nice leather folios.
(I may add to this list in the coming weeks, but right now these are the two main things jumping out at me.)
Overall Review Summary
For writers, reMarkable2 truly is a remarkable distraction free device that can help improve your concentration and organization, give you the freedom to write out longhand and convert it to text without the tedious re-typing, and help you mark up drafts with ease. This would probably serve prolific and professional writers more liberally than the writer who takes a few years to pen a book. Plus, it will probably save you a lot of printer paper, toner, pens and notebooks. For business owners/users – reMarkable will likely save you pounds of sticky notes and legal pads, and hours of time transcribing your notes. Plus, it’s a great on-the-go working tool for content creators and people who review a lot of PDFs.
Have some thoughts on the reMarkable2? Feel free to leave a comment below!

A Tale of Two Sisters
Chapter 1
Cephera glanced over her shoulder, panting, her legs nearly buckling. A thick blanket of snow tumbled toward her and Seraphina. Speeding up just a notch, her muscles burned, threatening to collapse. The hillside dipped at a steep angle. One wrong move would send them plummeting head over heels to possible death.
"Why do I let you get me into these messes!" Cephera yelled over the thundering sound of the avalanche. The mounds of white fluff drew closer and closer, no matter how fast they ran.
"They're not messes," her twin sister, Seraphina, yelled back her voice cracking as she inhaled, her lungs burning.
"Then, what are they?" Cephera panted rolling her eyes, continuing their untimely conversation. It might be the last one they'd ever have.
"Adventures!" Seraphina flashed her witty grin before jumping over a fallen tree. Cephera ducked between its exposed roots, slowing her down.
"Well, I don't care what you call them, they're still ...," the snow collided with the back of her legs, pitching her onto her face and burying her in the dense, freezing snow.
2 Months prior
Cephera spread her arms, inhaling the fresh air near the Glimmering Lake. Days as lovely as these were all they ever had on Mechanova. The climate and weather didn't change. The lake always sparkled, mirroring the sun above. It's clear blue waters darkened as it grew deeper, and spanned toward the horizon where it seemed to drop into nothingness. She'd never been that far away from the palace to see what wonders lay beyond.
She concentrated her mind on the soft sounds of birds, their wings beating fast, and their chirps mingling together in song. The rustling of tree leaves from the Nerubian Forest nearby added to the melody. Tilting her face upward, the warmth of the sun kissed her cheeks and nose.
Breathing deep, she caught an unfamiliar scent. Furrowing her brow, she sniffed the air once more.
  Smoke?
Cephera's eyes flew open as she twisted to look at the forest. Grey clouds curled up into the air, growing darker by the second, animals scurried away, and just before Cephera was about to run to the very edge of the tree-line, her sister came jumping through a thick brush screaming, "get in the water!" Seraphina waved frantically at her twin with both arms, resisting the temptation to look behind her.
Cephera caught a glimpse of the angry pixies flying after Seraphina, throwing fireballs at her and catching numerous other things aflame. Shocked, Cephera turned and jumped into the lake, her sister joining her. They swam from one end to the other, periodically coming up for air, checking to see if it was safe to exit.
Pulling themselves out onto the shore across the way, the sisters stood at the lake's edge and peered back at the forest. The smoke had turned black, and the stench of burnt wood assaulted their noses. In the distance, back toward the palace, it had caught the attention of the people. Cephera frowned and gave her sister the 'look.' Seraphina knew that look. She got it often lately, the one that said, 'what did you do now?'
"The pixies started it." Seraphina insisted, pointing back the way she came. Cephera shook her head, sighing in exasperation.
***
"Do you have any idea the damage caused by your actions?" King Yorin rubbed his forehead, his blue skin darkening as he paced in front of the twins. "Do you know how much energy it took to put out that fire?" He wasn't a man to take much of anything overly serious, but the twins knew he meant business this time.
He had every right to be angry. What started as a few fires, quickly formed into one. Jumping from tree to tree, it devoured at least a quarter of the forest. "You extinguished it, no harm done. In a few days, you make the trees grow back, and all is well." Seraphina replied, but kept her eyes averted. The magic used by the royal family didn't work that way, and she knew it. As future Queen, it was her job to know and understand it.
"Do you listen to any of your training? Do you know how much time and energy it will take to restore that amount of land, not to mention the materials we've lost for trading." He threw his hands in the air with a growl. A headache threatened to develop, but he tried to fight it off. His energy was spent, he needed rest.
"It's not my fault we have hot-headed pixies living in there." Seraphina turned her face up, glaring, defiant to the end.
"You don't steal their eggs!" The King yelled. The shout echoed along the walls and ceiling, startling some people nearby.
"I wasn't stealing them, I was examining them." Her father washed a hand down over his face.
Turning to his youngest, he said, "and you, why didn't you stop her?" Cephera stared at him, shocked.
Pointing at herself, her mouth opened only to pause before finally speaking. "Me? I wasn't with her. I didn't even know she was in the forest," Cephera insisted, her cheeks turning pink.
"I trust you to keep your sister out of trouble." He countered with a disapproving frown.
"I can't be with her every second." Cephera looked between her elder sister and her father, how did she always get dragged into these things?
"Why can't you be more like your sister," King Yorin said, turning his attention back to the elder twin.
"Because that would be boring," Seraphina replied, "no offence." She added, giving Cephera an apologetic look.
"None taken," Cephera assured her with a smile, waving off the otherwise mean comment.
"Don't smile at her, she's in big trouble." The King chided, wagging his finger at them.
"It was an accident. You want us to learn about all walks of life, right? Seraphina was just curious." Cephera picked up for her sister as she always did grabbing her father's thumb and giving it a squeeze.
"I swear, if I had known they'd go all pyromaniac on me, I would have stayed far away from them," Seraphina promised.
With another growl, King Yorin turned from them, slipping from Cephera's grasp. "Away with the both of you." He commanded, waving his hand over his shoulder. He got no arguments from either girl, they took off before he could change his mind.
"You're so lucky he didn't punish you," Cephera warned her sister-- for all the good it would do.
"It was an accident, they happen." Seraphina jumped the glass stairs two at a time leading up to their rooms. They both needed a change of clothes.
Going separate ways at the top level, Cephera paused just outside her room and looked down at the small wooden chest set up against the wall. A shrine to their Mother. Everyone of Mechanovian descent lived thousands of years, but her Mother had been Gaian, or human as some called them. For a Gaian, she'd lived what was considered a full life, but Cephera wished they'd had more time together.
Though technically half-human, the twins had Mechanovian blood, and that overrode any other race. In fact, everyone in Mechanova was half another race, but their Mechanovian bloodline always reigned supreme.

I’m on a reading kick and download a buttload of light novel samples from iTunes to try them out. I of course chose predictable ones that I watched the animes of and want to pick up just to see the story continue (Ex: The Devil is a Part Timer, Log Horizon, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, etc) but I want to take a minute to shoutout some that don’t have anime adaptions (and one that I chose completely at random.
Anything by Yoru Sumino. I vaguely heard the hype of “I Want To Eat Your Pancreas” last year and decided to buy the light novel as an ebook to read while on a cruise, and I absolutely loved it. I also went ahead and bought the manga version and watched the movie adaption which I actually didn’t particularly like but this isn’t the topic of this post. Then I found out she wrote other books, and so far I’m really enjoying them, even if I haven’t read passed the sample just yet.
Both “I Had That Same Dream Again” and “At Night I Become a Monster” have the same, what I can only describe as, innocent cynicism that I loved in Pancreas, and I can’t wait to read more of them, but I want to get physical copies of them. I’m very rapidly becoming a fan of Yoru Sumino’s work as a whole (and yes, I did buy myself a physical copy of Pancreas later on!)
Now for my completely blind choice that I’m just intrigued by: “Tearmoon Empire.” The story follows a 20 year old Selfish Princess being put to death by guillotine, only to later wake up as her 12 year old self. There is something so human about the main heroine as she genuinely tries to be a better person we’ll still carrying a certain amount of ridiculous arrogance that makes her incredibly charming in my opinion. Also, the fact that she seems to have flashbacks to her lowest moments before her death makes her very sympathetic. This one is a series of novels rather than oneshots like the only two, and I think I’m going to follow this one if the rest of the first volume is as good as the sample.
I downloaded a lot more samples, but I’m just going to focus on these ones for now. Don’t want to burn myself out right out of the gate. Feel free to suggest more light novels for me to add to my backlog in the notes! ^_^

2019 Writing Round Up
The new year is here, and with it everyone is talking about what they wrote this past year. The last quarter of 2019 was a brutal rollercoaster for me, emotionally and personally, so it’s good for me to have the chance to sit here and reflect on what I accomplished and the good things that happened too.
2019 started with receiving a grant from the Toronto Arts Council for The Maddening Science – said grant went to research materials for the novel, a new computer, printer, and keyboard, and paying off some debts. But 2019 also started in a place of utter burn-out, having slammed through writing, editing, and publishing five big novels in three years, as well as rewriting a feature film and completing the scripts for three seasons of a webseries.
I was also working two dayjobs – one first thing in the morning, for an hour and a half, and then a standard eight-hour shift in the evenings which got me home at around 10pm – so my sleep schedule was a mess and I was having trouble not only making time to write, but concentrating when I did have the time.
I started the year in a place of complete exhaustion and mild frustration that neither of my book series had really caught on, and as my agent once said, “burned out from tried to break out.”  I’m not happy to say that I think I still occupy that place a full year later; but I’ve had the opportunity to rest more, and begin to refill my creative well again, and to reclaim my writing space by no longer needing a roommate.
I’m not quite there yet – turns out finishing two series in four years really takes it out of you – but maybe in a few more months I’ll be ready to sit down and begin to spin out a new novel. In the mean time, I’ve got lots of irons in the fire, as you’ll see.
January
The first third of 2019 was dedicated to rewriting The Skylark’s Sacrifice a second time. I’d rewritten it in the last third of 2018 and my editor ended up agreeing that while the rewrite was exactly what she asked for, we should not have gone down that street in the first place. It was what was asked of me, but it didn’t work. So I took it back to the drawing board, and started the re-write all over again.
I also published WORDS FOR WRITERS: The DO-ING Trap.
I finished the edits/polish on A Woman of the Sea, which I had begun in October 2018 and loaded the book onto Wattpad in preparation for serializing it.
February
I spent February rewriting and jobhunting. I tried to write a short story and Did Not Do Well. It’s half done and likely to end up on the Pile Of Unfinished Tales.
At least I got some new words on the page with WORDS FOR WRITERS – Beta Readers.
And I began releasing A Woman of the Sea a chapter at a time on Valentine’s Day.
March
I completed the Skylark rewrites and handed them over to Reuts Publications.  I also published WORDS FOR WRITERS – From Signing to Signing.
At this point I tried to start The Maddening Science, the book I received a Toronto Art’s Council Grant for in 2018, and bashed out a few chapters and a few scenes. But something was off about it, and I couldn’t pinpoint why, so I kept going into the file and only put a few hundred words in here and there. I couldn’t really sit down and dig in, and because I don’t believe in Writer’s Block as a mystical magical reason for why people can’t write (there are always reasons), I had to step back to try to figure out why I was struggling. I assumed it was probably because I was in the middle of job interviews and decided to try again later.
April
I started a new copywriting job, leaving my other two dayjobs, and it sucked up all my brainpower and creativity and made it very hard to want to sit down and compose yet more words at the end of the day.
I resumed working piecemeal on The Maddening Science, pecking out what I could one molasses-slow sentence at a time. I realized that the incidents in the news regarding the current political comment and the toxic white supremacist misogyny that is rampant in our society today has made it very hard to figure out how to tell a responsible story about a supervillain as the protagonist.
I’m still working on that. In the mean time, while I figure out how to restructure the tale, the book and the progress blog are on hiatus.
May
Still brain-dead from work, I only managed to bash out WORDS FOR WRITERS: How do social media and writing/publishing work together?
June
There were some final edits on The Skylark’s Sacrifice to be discussed, but I really did nothing this month beyond marketing pushes and watching all the webseries I judged for TOWebfest.
July
The director of my feature film, To a Stranger, was going to start shopping the script around to executive producers, so before he did that I got some actorfriends together to do a table read. The read, and their feedback, revealed some character motivation gaps in the film, and I set about organizing their notes and figuring out how to solve the issues.
I also wrote and published WORDS FOR WRITERS – How To Write a Synopsis.
This was also the month of TOWebfest, the festival itself, and I spent a lovely day with fellow creators and spoke to some executive producers about my own webseries to try to garner interest.
I was a guest at Pretty Heroes Con for the first time and LOVED it. It’s great to celebrate strong female leads in SF/F and I loved Sailor Moon as a kid, so I was in nostalgic nirvana. It was lovely to introduce those Girl Power-loving fans to The Skylark’s Saga.
August
I restructured and rewrote To a Stranger, added extra characters and extra scenes to clear up some character motivation in the screenplay. It’s now back with the director and I hope to hear that he’s got a production house and an Exec attached to the project soon.
I appeared at FanExpo Toronto to do some panels, sell some books, and judged the short fiction contest. I also wrote and published WORDS FOR WRITERS: How to Create a Pitch Package.
September
The Skylark’s Sacrifice was published! Yay! I had a wonderful launch party at Bakka Phoenix, and got to simultaneously launch the incredible book trailer for the duology animated by Elizabeth Hirst to a song by Victor Sierra. Friends Adrianna Prosser and Eric Metzloff, and Danforth Brewery made it extra special.
I also got to read at Word on the Street, which was been a career-long dream, reading on the new Across the Universe Stage.
However, September was also the month when I lost the copywriting job. I saw it coming, so I was shocked when it happened and how it went down, but not surprised. I wasn’t fitting in well with the team, the original project I had been hired for had been vetoed by the execs, work was being taken away from me and given to freelancers, and I didn’t have the training they wanted (though that makes me wonder why they hired me in the first place.) In retrospect it’s been a blessing, as the workplace was not at all a good fit for me and was slowly becoming toxic, but at the time it was a devastating blow to my confidence and my coffers.
Just a few days after I was fired, on my 37th birthday, I won a Watty Award for A Woman of the Sea. Happy birthday to me! I was offered a place among the Wattpad Stars program and accepted – and wow, is there a lot of paperwork for that – and I’m still trying to figure out what benefits the program offers. (Though I’m pretty chuffed with my free Canva Premium subscription!) A Woman of the Sea was featured on the home page as an Undiscovered Gem and as of today has about 82k reads. Whoa!
I also wrote and published WORDS FOR WRITERS: How to Plan a Series.
October
I spent most of the month sleeping and crying and working through how I felt about getting fired. When one identifies oneself as a writer, to finally get a job in writing was a thrill and felt like a confirmation that although I was struggling with my next book, I was a writer and I’d get through it. Being fired from the job – even though the reason was an exec decision to eliminate my project and thus my role – felt like a very personal blow. I wasn’t a writer after all. (Or at least, that’s what it felt like).
This had me thinking long and hard. Especially about where I wanted my writing career to go next – as much I’ve been writing in the realm of SF/F the past decade, I’ve begun to realize that was I really am is a Character-Driven Romance writer. Romance set in spec fic and fantasy realms, sure, but Romance and Character Work are my wheelhouse and how I should be selling myself.
This realization has been pretty freeing because it means that the frustrations and roadblocks I’ve been coming up against can maybe be dissolved by reframing my brand and rethinking my career map.
Wattpad added the sample of City By Night that’s on Wattpad to their Halloween Reads list on the homepage and I decided to put the whole novella up on the site for people to read. Read it now, though. It won’t stay up forever as the eBook rights to the novel are signed with an indie publisher. This is just a limited-time promotion.
And knowing that readers were asking what I would be posting next on Wattpad after A Woman of the Sea, I rejigged Triptych for the site and started serializing it from the start. You can read it here. This story also won’t stay up forever, for the same reason.
I also started serializing Words for Writers on Wattpad. I won’t be copying over all 75+ articles I have on my website, just the ones that are specifically useful for Watties.
I also polished a webseries and sent it to a producer with a major broadcaster after our convo at TOWebfest for consideration. I’ve followed up but there’s no reply. I’ll follow up again in January 2020 but I can pretty well assume that No Answer is my ‘No’ Answer.
I am thinking about maybe pitching it as a graphic novel in the future, though I’m going to have to reach out to my friends who write them for publishers to figure out how to put at pitch together.
November
In 2017 I handed over a YA contemporary re-telling of “Northanger Abbey” to my agent, and it was lukewarmly received by both her and the handful of editors she showed it to. It was then shelved for possible future reworking.
In the first part of the NaNoWriMo month, I decided to tackle this reworking, and I was still wrestling mentally with The Maddening Science. This reworking was inspired a lot by reading Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston in October, and realizing that the tone I’d been going for with my narrator hadn’t been irreverent or GenZ-y enough for the story I was trying to tell, and not grounded enough in the technologies and social media that my modern-day Catherine Morland would have access to.
I reworked the Pitch Document for the novel, now currently called “Title TBA”, and got to chapter seven during NaNo. I’ve got some thinking to do about structure for the novel, and how far into using Social Media As A Storytelling Tool I want to go with the idea, but generally speaking I’m pretty pleased with the result of the rewrites.
Partway through NaNo, it occurred to me that there was another story that my Wattpad readers were asking for, and one that would be a lot of fun to write. In A Woman of the Sea, my fictional Regency-era  Jane-Austen-analogue authoress Margaret Goodenough writes her debut novel “The Welshman’s Daughters”. As I describe this non-existent novel in A Woman of the Sea, it’s a gothic romance that’s very Elizabeth Gaskell-and-Jane Austen-esque in terms of it being a character study driven romance, with some of the fun high melodrama and gothic tone of Anne Radcliffe. And, in the world of A Woman of the Sea, it’s the first queer kiss in Classic Western Literature.
A handful of readers have asked where they can find this book, or have confessed to going to the library to ask for it, only to learn that it’s not real. I made it up.
And I thought… well, why not make it real?
So I’m working on the pitch doc and the first chapter now, to see if a) this is something I want to pursue and b) this is something that will help me break through my burn-out slump. I hope it will, but I think I still need to take time to rest before I really push into it.
And I still have the “Title TBA” rewrites to complete.
December
I published WORDS FOR WRITERS: How Do I Get An Agent?, and spent the rest of the month just trying to chill. I’ve become a bit of a reluctant reader, so I am trying to push myself to read a little each day, to remind myself why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place.
A Woman of the Sea was turned down for Paid Stories, unfortunately, because of the structure of the romance. The Stars Team explained that romance stories like this one, with one romantic partner in the first half of the book, and a different one in the second (a la Brigit Jones’ Diary) doesn’t tend to do well on Paid because readers are reluctant to shell out for a romance where they don’t meet the HEA partner until later. It’s heartbreaking to hear, because I was really hoping that this might become a viable stream of income for me. At least the team who turned it down were very kind and expressed how much they loved the story in and of itself.
But no matter – onwards and upwards!
What’s ahead for 2020
Well, I’m not sure. This has been a really, really difficult year and I have really, really struggled with trying to figure out who I am and what I want, both in life and as a writer.
Certainly, there will be lot of hard thinking about the future of my writing career. I have ideas that I love and want to pursue, but this post-firing-return-to-the-job-hunt-depression is killing my desire to create. And honestly, the fact that I’ve worked so hard for so many years and haven’t managed to get any sort of break-through or cultural foothold or ability to even really to pay my bills with this job is disheartening. I’m still paying more in marketing every year than I’m making in Royalties.
However, I have some new opportunities on the horizon – conversations happening behind closed doors, as well as Divine Paradox Films still working toward filming To A Stranger, and Alpaca vs Llama shopping The Skylark’s Song as a teens animated series. And the webseries I wrote is under consideration with a new production team, so I can keep my fingers crossed.
Who knows, perhaps the rewritten “Title TBA” might be just the thing to propel my work into a realm where I’m really earning money. Though I had originally envisioned it as the first of a series, the more I work and think on it, the more I feel like it would be best as a stand-alone. I think it would slap a lot harder if it was a one-off.
And I am genuinely liking the plot of The Welshman’s Daughters, and all the research reading and viewing I am doing to get the tone and mood of the book right (please recommend me your favourite Gothic Romances – film, TV, or books!)
But I’m not going to rush anything. It’s nice to be able to remember how to putter with a book and have no looming, razor-blade deadlines hanging over my neck.
2020 will be, I hope, a year of renewed creativity, motivation, and the year where I complete at least one of the three novel projects I’ve started.
For now, I think I’m going to go have a nap.

What Is An E-Book? The Industry and the Future
Tumblr media
E-books have developed in their brief history into a stage where many online surfers know of these and understand different formats. The secret to e-books is they are digital versions of books or demand printed variants, but may be accessible in hard copy form in the event the publisher selects. Many self-published authors are discovering e-books for a very simple method to share their thoughts with no costs and obstacles involved with conventional publishing. Amazon has become a pioneer in the business using its own Kindle reader while Apple has contested the stage using its own iPad, which downloads e-books in the i Bookstore.
The most important reason behind creating an e-book could be summed up with efficacy. An e-book does not get lost just like a physical publication and does not have the difficulties of ripped pages or a secondhand cover. From the past world, novels may be from inventory when they did market, necessitating fresh pressings, whereas at the new universe e-books are not out of inventory. The emerging design for printing hard copy models today is predicated on requests since they arrive in, like in Amazon.
Another effective characteristic of e-books is that they can be upgraded more easily. Conventional books were published in a succession of pressings, dependent on requirement. But if need diminished a publication might head from print and be obsolete. The initial pressing may even possess misinformation or typos. E-books, nevertheless, permit the author to have an upgraded version prepared for internet distribution, as mistakes can be corrected quickly, rather than waiting to the printing procedure to take weeks.
Consumers love the benefits of e-books over conventional books because of reduced prices. As it costs much less money to create and promote an e-book compared to a printed publication, the cost drops for customers. A variety of pages may nevertheless impact the purchase price, but e-books allow it to be feasible to sell more things of the exact same thing.
By way of instance, rather than getting an whole publication, some folks may only wish to buy 1 chapter at a lower cost. Additional benefits of e-books are that they may be converted into various languages and they are able to be utilized with text-to-speech applications to make audio books for individuals with disabilities. Committed e-book readers have turned into an additional electronic device individuals buy especially just for studying e-books and online papers. Tablet computers like the iPad make helpful e-book readers because of their reliability and controls which make studying easier. Mobile devices like i Phones and Androids may read e-books.
Although the e-book marketplace doesn't have business formatting criteria, the very popular format was the Adobe PDF documents. Web programmers tried to build a system called Open eBook, a zip file according to HTML and CSS, which divides e-books down to elements. In May 2011 Amazon noted that the earnings of e-books had exceeded sales of hard copy publications. It was found that e-book repetitively favors individuals under age 50. A massive bulk of e-book readers read published books too. Almost half the respondents stated they favored e-books over published books.
In 2012 Apple established the i Book Author, and it is a software application which makes it possible for writers to make e-books from the PDF format within an iPad and make products offered from the i Books shop and also for sharing. Amazon has a stage named Create Space for writers to make e-books, which has to conform to the website's policies. Lulu also supplies the resources for writers to make and advertise their particular self-published e-books.
E-books have been shown to be rewarding, even for conventional publishers like Random House. Fifty Shades of Grey from novelist E.L. James was among the organization's large sellers in 2012. The business noted that e-book earnings made up 27% of their entire book sales, that has been a 7% growth from a year before. Many times each publisher will give a sample of a publication within an e-book that boosts the published paperback or hard copy available. Occasionally e-books are only free to introduce a brand new writer. Apple also supplies complimentary e-books in the iBooks shop. Other sites offering totally free e-books are all ManyBooks.net, Free-ebooks. You might even hunt for free e-books employing the pdfgeni.com lookup engine optimization.
The near future of e-Books may combine more with text and multimedia to speech capabilities. It remains significant that e-books really are a clickable medium. They are sometimes linked-to sites in addition to interlinked so they provide simple navigation into the source material. The most innovative e-books connection to instantaneous videos that match the text. E-books are extremely practical for individuals involved together with other communication besides composing.
Musicians, painters and film makers may use e-books to exhibit and market their additional media. In the end, e-books are fast learning tools which offer immediate access to content that is deeper. In case the e-book may accelerate somebody's search for information to a couple of minutes or even seconds, then it's a potent utility for your reader. Anticipate e-books of their long run to help people cut through specialized jargon and find new methods rapidly with visuals and imaginative tactics to categorize and index consciousness.

Glass Mosaic Tile Art - Mosaic Glass Cutters
Tumblr media
Making wonderful glass mosaic tile art is easy! Let me show you how.
Wheeled glass cutters are essential for creating glass mosaics. I use it to cut and shape vitreous glass and stained glass. It can also be used to cut smalti. The wheeled cutters make cleaner cuts than tile nippers. The two carbide wheels (or steel, if you buy cheap cutters) are fixed in position. Instead of scoring and breaking, the wheels apply even pressure to the top and bottom sides of the glass, causing it to fracture along the line of the wheels.
The wheels are replaceable and eventually go dull, but not before several thousand cuts. Each wheel is held in place by a setscrew (usually an Allen screw). As your cuts become noticeably less clean than when the cutters were new, use an Allen wrench to loosen the screws, rotate each wheel about 1/8-inch, and then re-tighten the screws. By changing the location of where each wheel touches the glass, you have, in effect, replaced the blades. It'll take a long time and many cuts to use the entire circumference of the wheels, especially if they're carbide.
When the wheels finally do become dull, I suggest buying a whole new tool. The wheels make up the bulk of the tool's cost, so you won't save much by just buying replacement wheels. With a brand new tool, not only are the wheels sharp, but the rubber handle grips are new and clean (the rubber wears down and becomes dirty) and the spring is secured in-place. Every now and then, the spring breaks free from my cutters. The tool still works with a loose spring, but there's nothing to keep the handles from spreading too far apart. When that happens, the spring falls off. It's quite annoying to drop the spring, watch it bounce out of reach, and then have to get out of my chair to retrieve it. I tried soldering it permanently in place, but it didn't work because I couldn't get the metal hot enough. So, until I buy a new tool, the spring constantly falls off. Another reason to buy a new tool instead of just replacement wheels is, if you drop the tool, it's possible to knock the wheels out of alignment. So, after several projects when you think the wheels need replacing, I suggest buying a whole new tool.
When your new tool arrives, use an Allen wrench to tighten the screws as tight as possible. Then, use an engraver, paint, felt-tip marker (or whatever you have that makes a permanent mark) to make a small tick mark on the side of each wheel where it touches the glass when cutting (the two tick marks should be aligned opposite each other). I use an engraving tool for making the tick marks so I don't have to worry about paint or ink eventually rubbing off. After a few hundred cuts, loosen the screws, turn each wheel slightly, and then re tighten the screws. After several of these adjustments, the tick marks have gone full circle indicating that it's time to replace the tool (or just the wheels, if you prefer).
Don't be surprised if the wheels rotate by themselves. No matter how hard I crank down on those screws, it apparently isn't tight enough because the wheels slowly rotate by themselves from the pressure exerted during the cutting action. After several days and many cuts, I notice the tick marks are no longer aligned directly opposite each other, which indicates the wheels have rotated slightly. Maybe I'm a weakling, but I just can't get the screws tight enough to keep them static. However, that's okay with me because, if they turn by themselves, then I don't have to manually do it.

Gothic typeface movie#
It was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders Company in 1903. The eBook Typography for the People is full of directional and hand-rendered examples of signage from around the world. League Gothic is a sans serif typeface, a revival of an old classic, Alternate Gothic 1. Designed by Akira Kobayashi, Kazuhiro Yamada and Ryota Doi of the Monotype Studio, the Tazugane Gothic typeface offers ten weights and was developed to complement the classic Latin typeface, /fonts/linotype/neue. Science Gothic is a variable font with weight, width, contrast and slant axes - the equivalent of 200+ separate fonts. More can be learned at Doret’s own blog here.Īdditional Resource: Typography for the People What is the Tazugane Gothic font The Tazugane Gothic typeface family is the first original Japanese typeface created by Monotype. The sample settings are sculptural letterforms, a pleasure to the eye, whether or not you are a Satanist or work in a scriptorium. I show it here, in part, because I am truly a fan of Doret’s nuanced renderings. Gothic was a contemporary term (now little-used except to describe period designs) meaning sans-serif. I’ve tried to make it seem familiar, yet totally new.”ĭark Angel is a perfect face for the emo and goth among you, but with its historical underpinning it also suggests more contemporary uses. Franklin Gothic and its related faces are a large family of sans-serif typefaces in the industrial or grotesque style developed in the early years of the 20th century by the type foundry American Type Founders (ATF) and credited to its head designer Morris Fuller Benton. The font was designed for use on roadside signs in the United States, and it is still used for this purpose today. I think it’s very different from any other blackletter or gothic script style fonts. Highway Gothic Font is a sans-serif typeface that was created in the early 1950s. “Over the years, I kept going back to that sketch,” he explains, “and thinking of how I cold turn it into a useful font.” Last year he decided devote his time to its development.

It started out as a sketch for a logo for the California Angels (now the Anaheim Angels) done in a blackletter-ish style. Gothic fonts are available for freeload at the best fonts collection websites. Michael Doret (of Alphabet Soup in L.A.), one of my favorite lettering artists and typeface designers, has been working on a new font that he says is in the spirit of black letter, “but I think it has a lot of other references going on as well.” He told me that he doesn’t usually dredge up typographic samples from the past and clean them up for contemporary use “and this new face, Dark Angel, is no exception.” Although, I see a little flicker of Lucian Bernhard and the Sachplakat in it.

Going to see what resin casting and paint pouring stuff I have in my closet, and what might need to be replaced after spending the summer in a hot storage. Got ring molds yesterday.
I want to get some of the 2 part silicone putty to make some molds of things. I have the remeltable plastic mold making stuff but that's for making a one time mold as opposed to something you want to make lots of.
I was going to get some more supplies and was torn between 2 part and UV light and ultimately decided to wait for my tax returns. Silicone molds can be used for lots of non food things, food grade ones should be kept separate, and they can be hard to find some time IRL so I don't mid getting a couple of those.
Read a sample of an ebook and found out pretty much everything I wanted from said book is in the sample so I just need to copy that out.
Rewrote the notes for the related story so I don't know if that will do me or I'll be doing some proper writing for it. Tried out a couple for paragraphs for something else.
Um, some metal stamping blanks, a thinggie of Wacky Packages because the one on top was one I didn't have and it had a second one I didn't have inside.
If the free streaming is so shitty around here it does nothing for any confidence I would have paying for it. I don't need to see Miraculous Ladybug in English that bad right now.
