King Gill

I wanted him to look more like a father than just a little angy shrimp of a Seawing. He is based off of Seaweed and Broadnose Sevengill Shark

gill is depicted as light green in TDP but what if that’s due to the lack of water. when humans are very sickly they tend to get pale. i bet that happened to gill too. i imagine his natural scales were more close to that of auklets. just a thought.

Gill with and without water

Forcing myself to draw the entire body rather than limiting myself to headshots. Still haven’t worked my way to drawing wings, however.

Revisited my concept for King Gill and fleshed it out a bit, both his hydrated and dehydrated states. His appearance was primarily inspired by Mufasa (I even referenced one of his poses) and a little bit of King Triton with the goal of making him look kingly and paternal. As I’ve mentioned previously, I like to give SeaWings (and all the wings really) facial hair when I think it fits the character. I also gave him a gill patch, which my Orca design inherited,

While in the arena, he loses most of his ‘beard’ and sail as it dries up and shrivels. He’s also very underweight, and the lack of water has given him a shrink wrapped appearance, emphasizing his bones and musculature. He has sores and scratches from where he’s been chained around the neck and ankles. He’s completely feral, almost zombie-like. He’s just overall gross and crusty.

Bonus Coral cause I also redid her sketch. Gave her much more simplified jewelry inspired by Ponyo’s mother.

#10 - "Mount"

This is a double whammy, because while she is in effect serving as a mount here, her size also makes her "like a mountain". And since I doubt Tempest is ever going to get an official graphic novel design, I guess here she is.

If I had more time than a single day for each of these, I would have liked to put a little more thought into Tempest's armor. As it is, I began drawing pauldrons on her and then thought "maybe she should wear a helmet." And then I just wildly improvised from there.

I showed this to a friend and their reaction was "Jeez, how the hell do you pound these out; day after day?". I really don't know, you got me there. By all accounts it doesn't make sense.

Flying animals have a hard time getting Big for a lot of reasons, but one of them is that legs are heavy. Incorporating your walking limbs into your airfoil is seemingly part of the reason pterosaurs could get so big. So thats what I did to the dragons :3.

theyre still hexapods though, with the weird birg inspired face hands. Wof dragons use a lot of tools and i wanted to give them dextrous hands in a weird way.

Pantala dragons still have four wings, using their back legs as another wing microraptor style. I tried to make them the same mammal reptile thing that the other dragons are so they have spurs on their arms and a split mandible to give them bug energy.

I am in the process of rereading The Dragonet Prophecy and I just got to Gill

And I had the most horrifying thought

I like the headcanon that before he was gone Gill recognized Tsunami, to some extent. Not as his daughter necessarily, but as Coral-- it's a neat headcanon, it makes it more tragic, and Tsunami is the spitting image of her mother.

Gill is too dehydrated to speak. Part of what makes what happened to him terrifying is the fact that he makes no sound as he tries to attack Tsunami.

... Seawings don't need to speak to communicate. They have Aquatic.

Tsunami doesn't know Aquatic.
