2 February 2021 | The final term of my master’s program has finally arrived. No idea if I’m doing anything *academic* afterwards right now. For now I’m just counting down the days until I find out where my husband’s residency placement will take us for the next three years. Adult existence is still such an enigma to me.

- a lifeguide for students with anxiety - i’ve been struggling with anxiety for more than a decade. needless to say, i know what it’s like to be in a school system when your mental health isn’t at its best. it’s easy to get discouraged and give up on your studies. i’ve been there as well, but look at me now, i’ve graduated from a bachelor degree, a master degree and i’m even doing a second one. IT-IS-POSSIBLE. if i did it, you can do it as well. so here, i picked some of my best tips that i wish i’d know sooner when i got to higher education, when my mental health failed me. x prioritize i can’t stress this enough. P R I O R I T I Z E all your tasks. it’s easy to be overwhelmed with work, emotions, pressure. so whenever you feel like you’ve got a thousand things to do but don’t know how/where to start : list everything. as soon as you’re done with your list, pick three colours : one for important tasks that need to be done asap one for tasks that you have to do but aren’t a life or death question one for tasks that can wait/less important once it’s done, mark your important tasks with numbers: one for the most important, second for the second most important etc… this method will help you to know what you’ve got to do first and help you organise your brain.
x use the pomodoro method being anxious means procrastinate then worry about procrastination because you’ve got a lot to do but also struggle to focus because your mind is thinking about something else… it’s an endless spiral. the pomodoro method is well-known amongst studyblrs but it is really helpful when you can’t focus. 20 minutes of work, 5 min break, repeat it 4 times then give yourself a bigger break. honestly it worked for me. i go full hardcore mode for 20mn, and i’ve never been more productive. + bonus tips : my mind wanders easily, so i also use an extension that blocks websites (forest is the best!!) it helps me to stay focus.
x when it’s too much, stop it you’ve got to submit an essay, you haven’t got much time left but you can’t work. you can’t work because you’re too anxious, because you’re scared, because you want to give up, because all of this, is getting too much. did that ever happen ? don’t force it, you’re not going to be more productive, trust me on this one. instead of crying your eyes out on this essay, give yourself a break. have a shower, talk to a relative/friend, cook something, go out for 5 minutes, scroll your tumblr timeline, do some breathing exercises, do something else. when you’re feeling a tad better, come back, write down everything that is currently making you anxious and split them in two: what can/can’t be solved. and then write down solutions, even long terms ones. once it’s done, you should feel a bit better, enough to go back to your work.
that’s all for the real real real tips, but here’s some bonus that i do as well: - listen to classical/relaxing playlist - use earplugs when i need to be super focused - always keep a notebook nearby, it’s helpful to write what you’ve got in mind - ask for help. never be scared to reach to someone when you can’t do it anymore, it’s important. - remember to take time for yourself as well, sleep is important, so is staying hydrated.
i know it’s not much but those tips helped me get through my dissertation and honestly i would have done so much better if i had known those lil tips before.
take care, - aly

I was tagged by @ohthoumylovelyboy to answer these questions. Thank you Hero ily!!!!!
your favorite album: I have many favorites, but for now I’ll choose American Idiot by Green Day.
your favorite song/favorite song from that album: My favorite song from that album is “Letterbomb.” But if you ask me my favorite song in general, I’d have no clue how to answer that. I have way too many!!
most listened to artist(s): Twenty One Pilots, Green Day, and Linkin Park
an album that’s important to you: Vessel by Twenty One Pilots. That album got me through a lot of shit. Tyler Joseph is such an amazing lyricist and he writes about stuff that I personally relate to. In my deepest moments of depression I’d always go to that album. I still do. It makes me feel not so alone. It gives me strength to keep living. I mean, look at these lyrics from Truce, the last song of the album: “Stay alive, stay alive for me / You will die, but now your life is free / Take pride in what is sure to die.”
a song that’s important to you: “Rainbow” and “Praying” by Kesha. Those two songs got me through the worst summer of my life. The fact that she went through something similar and was still standing gave me strength to keep going too. Her lyrics felt so close and personal to me and I knew that she understood exactly what I was going through because she went through the same thing. I even saw her in concert that summer and I sobbed when she sang Praying. I don’t know if I would’ve survived that point in my life without her and her music.
what makes you like a song: I have a really wide variety of tastes (my Spotify playlist is a complete mess). But I like songs that really build up and crescendo, whether it be the instrumentals or the singer belting or both. I also really appreciate well-written and emotional lyrics, especially when I personally relate to them.
your favorite instrument to hear in a song: I love a good heart-pumping bassline (electric bass, upright bass, bass drum, etc.) and I also LOVE electric guitar riffs. That’s what I miss most in lots of modern music; that really wailing hardcore rock sound.
a song from your childhood: “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen
a song to dance to: “Slow Dancing in the Dark” by Joji. I wish I had a S.O. so I could slow dance with them to this song :(
a song that reminds you of love (any kind not just romance): “On My Own” from Les Miserables reminds me of unrequited love. It’s one of my favorite (if not my absolute favorite) songs from a musical. And my favorite version is by Lea Salonga :)
a song you love lyrically: “The Fox, the Crow, and the Cookie” by mewithoutYou and “Go or Go Ahead” by Rufus Wainwright. Two of my favorite songs of all time, and they’re lyrically BEAUTIFUL!!!
I’m tagging the last few people who have tagged me in tag games! Here’s me returning the favor!! @unapologetically-infinite @kill-your-poets @pendersleigh-rose @intimate-comrade @gildedstudy @aconissa @camillamaecaulay @dead--poets @satans-classics and @andstillwesleep. If I haven’t tagged you, still feel free to do it and say I tagged you!! And tag me in your post so I can check it out! I’d love to know your music tastes!!!

MUSIC ASKS!!! 🎼🎹🎻🎧
jesus i got these questions from @gildedstudy , thank you for letting them cross my gaze! i’m a Music major in my programme, so i listen to a lot of things and this is Not Accurate At All. If you want to do it just do!
your favorite album:
I’ll be super honest, I don’t listen to a lot of albums. But of the ones I do listen to, I can’t choose!!! Rostropovich’s world premiere recording of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 is So Good. The “Neon Impasse” album by City Girl gives such good vibes. Uh. The “Parachutes” album by Coldplay is really good. “Racine Carrée” by Stromae is A BOP.
your favorite song/favorite song from that album:
Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1. And “Ta Fête” on the Stromae album.
most listened to artist(s):
Spotify said last year that my top artist last year was City Girl? I probably only played it as background music, I don’t remember actively listening to it much other than while walking. I also listen to a lot of Radiohead, Shostakovich, and Debussy.
an album that’s important to you:
The “Parachutes” album by Coldplay. And their “A Rush Of Blood To The Head” as well.
a song that’s important to you:
Not a song per se but the Gadfly film score suite by Shostakovich. If you’re limiting it to Song Only, I would say “Papaoutai” by Stromae.
what makes you like a song:
Depends. If it’s background music, I like a pretty consistent atmosphere. For music I actively listen to? It has to have some strong emotions, and a memorable sound. All the stuff I like to actively listen to has some special indescribable colour, be it jazz or neoclassical or full-blown symphony.
your favorite instrument to hear in a song:
I play the cello, so I guess I like hearing it.
a song from your childhood:
Coldplay’s “Yellow”! And for extra Nostalgia points, “Que Sera Sera”.
a song to dance to:
“Blue Da Ba Dee”. “fancy” by Isaac Delusion. And the Danse Macabre.
a song that reminds you of love (any kind not just romance):
Well. Fuck. There’s a lot. If you say Western Art music, would go for Debussy’s “Rêverie”. With lyrics? “Fly Me To The Moon”. Modern and with lyrics? “Amour armure” by Clément Froissart.
a song you love lyrically:
“Beau Soir” by Debussy. “Un conseil d'être heureux semble sortir des choses/ Et monter vers le coeur troublé.”
A few more recommendations that don’t really fit anywhere in particular:
“Saga of Harrison Crabfeathers” by Milos Foreman (piano jazz)
Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”! (20th century primitivism, written for ballet)
Ravel’s “Quatuor en Fa majeur”, M. 35 (20th century Impressionism)
“Le Laboratoire” by Biche (French indietronica!!)
“Älvan” by Robert Elovsson (lounge jazz)
“Kandaiki” by Mammal Hands!!!!! (avant-grade or crossover jazz!)
“Notre-Dame Est” by Anomalie (I think it’s French lo-fi?)

I got tagged in my first tag game by the awesome @study-not-procrastinating! Thank you so much!!
Rules: Answer 10 questions, the tag and pose 10 questions to 10 people.
Alright, here we go!
1. How would you like to be remembered in 200 years?
Honestly, I’ve never really thought about it! I don’t really have that same lust for immortality that i had as a kid. I guess I’d just like to be remembered as someone who was kind and loyal, and who helped someone achieve something amazing in their life. Maybe as someone who wrote a bomb paper about floral imagery in the Iliad.
2.  If you could get any director for a documentary about yourself, who would you pick and why?
Tim Burton! Maybe not a traditional documentary, I would love to have it in his style of stop motion clay. Growing up, I was always attracted to the darker and more macabre aspects of life, and that made it a bit hard to fit in. Fellow goths, you know what I mean. Tim Burton’s art showed me that I wasn’t alone, that there were other people out there who saw the beauty in the same things I did, and that it was okay to embrace your individuality!
3. What would be a museum exhibit that would definitely catch your attention?
Anything about the reign of Mansa Musa! Or about the history of math in the ancient Middle East!
4. If you could commit any crime and not get caught, what would you do?
Steal and repatriate a sacred item stolen from an indigenous people and placed in a museum by people who didn’t respect its intended purpose. Or create a perfectly counterfeit copy of a lost Rembrandt painting and sell it to a billionaire and give the proceeds to local schools who had their art programs cut.
5. Which anime/movie trope do you want to be?
I don’t know the name for it, but the character who’s super sweet and bubbly and maybe a little naive. Like Mako in KLK, Tohru in Fruitsbasket, or Cat in Victorious!
6. Which anime/movie trope are you really?
Either the otaku or the crybaby.
7. At what age would you tell a child Santa isn’t real?
Whenever they seriously ask or start to show signs of disbelief. But I would 1000% make sure that they knew that Santa Claus is real, that those of us who know the secret become Santa Claus and it’s our job to continue spreading joy and belief to the younger kids.
8. Which artist, either dead or living, would you pick to create a portrait of you?
Oh! This is a really tough one. There are so many artists out there who are amazing. For dead artists, I would probably have to say Salvador Dali. For living artists, definitely the amazing @marina-does-things. Her knight Daisy filled my heart with so much joy and she’s so talented!!
9. You can turn back time and rewrite one book that you read in high school English class. What do you change, and why?
If I had to choose, I would have Shakespeare make Romeo and Juliet take place over 3 weeks or months instead of 3 days. It would maybe decrease the satirical element about teens being dumb and making bad decisions, but would that really be so bad? And it would still be an incredibly heartbreaking tale about how there is no place for love in a world ruled by hate and fear, about how that doesn’t matter and we have to love anyway because that is the only way to fight that hate. It would still be a story of how their love was so pure, it defied the rules that bound their lives. But that way when people say that Romeo and Juliet “loved” each other, it would actually be possible.
10. If you were a billionaire, what is the one totally self-indulgent and weird thing you would have and everyone around you would have to pretend is cool.
XD Oh, the choices!! If I could only have one totally self-indulgent thing, I think I would have a bumper car type thing installed in my courtyard, but instead of cars, it would be dalek suits that you could sit in!
Sorry for the long post! Here are my 10 questions:
If you had to choose one decade to erase from history in order to save the planet from extinction, what decade would you choose and why?
Which of your parents do you think you are more like?
What do you think are the 5 most beautiful things one earth?
If you could explore either the deepest parts of the ocean or the furthest reaches of space, which would you choose?
What do you love most about your culture?
Who is the one person you would talk to about anything?
Do you have a favorite sitcom? If so, what is it?
When you think of home, what comes to mind?
If you could do absolutely anything you want tonight, and money was no concern, what would you do?
What is something you learned today that was completely unexpected or just really interesting?

@oliverights @darkacademaniac @gildedstudy @oscar-wilde-is-me @greenlightstudyblr Hey guys and fidgets, it’s Cain from Grey Academia. (Hello to my best friend who’s in there among you, hope you don’t mind being tagged like this.) You are all Dark Academics I’ve talked to who value and want to see more diversity and nuance in academia I had an idea that, since I talk to a lot of people in academia, I could start making a bit of a list or the like of DA blogs who share those values? @greenlightstudyblr told me it can be hard to find other people in DA who want to make it more inclusive, and this could be a tool to make it easier. What do you think?

3 September 2020 | The fall term begins in earnest next week so I’m spending this wonderfully rainy day trying to get my schedule straightened out. Also fighting the uphill battle of trying to maintain Greek.

17 December 2020 | The term is nearly over with only one paper left to complete! If I’m not able to recite 2 Peter 1:3-15 in Greek by the end of this, then I simply don’t know where my brain has been...

17 October 2020 | The days when I'm happy about having carpet are few and far between, but today is one of them. Currently sprawled out with too many books open working on the first bit of my Maximus paper. Something that made me even more excited to receive the edition of Disputations with Pyrrhus pictured here is that it was packaged and shipped by one of the hieromonks of the monastery that published the English translation. A text written by a monastic distributed by a monastic—how very fitting.
