"Romance #1" by Eunsong Kim
like some 14 year old girl waiting for her crush to glance back i
keep waiting for capitalism to end
but it won't end
my adult life lover states
on what will end:
Libraries Birds Retirement Recess Sprinting during recess Hispid Hares Starfish shaped like stars inconvenience Wrinkles Sunken cheeks Living Corals Protests Anti-Nuclear Proliferation Non-Aggression Pacts Dragonflies Mangosteen DMZs Trade Embargos Leopards, all kinds Sawfins Rewilding Infiltration Plot/Dreams Oak, Trees. Partulina Varisbilis Partulina Slendida (-------) Violence Prevention Programs News. News:
Might a few jellyfish survive—
counting till revelations becomes a part of—
I feel like Gideon isn't talked about very much, and I get it. He's in the show far less than Rossi, and his ending is unsatisfying. But in many ways, he built the team. He's Spencer's father figure and Aaron's friend. He sticks up for Elle, Emily, and Penelope and keeps Morgan in balance. I think he is sad for much of the show and is good at hiding it. I think this poem represents that dynamic well. He's waiting for the world to be good. He's waiting for something that will never come, and in the end, that's why he has to leave.
But I just want to remind you all there is good in the world. There is hope out there. You matter and if you feel sad or alone I am always here to talk. Please be kind to yourselves today. I hope the start to your weeks is amazing! Love Levi - ❤️

tazmuir could simply rerelease gideon the ninth over and over again but from the perspective of all of the different characters at canaan house and i would be tuned the fuck in. like the drama of all of their different expectations and relationships…. coronabeth living her hot girl summer… judith experiencing Sapphic Hell…. isaac and jeannemary on the world’s weirdest family vacation…. palamedes living out a deeply repressed regency era romance…. silas filled with loathing for every single person there…. delightful. canaan house drives me crazy. it’s like if love island was survivor

Me reading GtN and HtN: what a fascinating universe! It's an odd mix of futuristic and almost medieval, wherein they have incredibly advanced technology like space travel, but at the same time humanity seems to have regressed to a rather archaic level!
Me reading NtN: oh okay the nine houses are just freaks.

something something isn’t it significant that the first thing augustine does in htn is criticise mercy? isn’t it so upsetting that she is so aware of how resented she is? isn’t it horrible that one of the last things she says is “this is the chance for unlovable mercymorn—critical mercymorn—to show she is the most capable of her name… every time you’ve said i did not understand the human heart, that i was unfeeling, that i only knew worship without adoration […]”?
the fact her house, the eighth, is the most devoted to the emperor, and yet john still degrades her so publicly and casually.
mercymorn died one of the only few victims of 21st century misogyny after living 10,000 years with it.

Gideon + Poetry

"Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life. To be at peace." - @shakespearesdaughters
How cruel it was to have Gideon's death off-screen. I understand why it was that way, but I feel like it robbed us of closure. Criminal Minds is pretty consistent with that, so I'm not surprised. But what I do hope, for Gideon's sake at least, is that he wasn't surprised. That death, if not the act itself, was a gentle thing for him. Like an embrace from someone you've missed for years. In death, there is a possibility for a kind of rebirth and rest - and if anything, Gideon deserves rest. I see him in the team after he's gone. He's still there, still watching, still proud. And that's what makes him so special to me.

imagine you are palamedes sextus. you spend twelve years exchanging letters with a woman who is seven years your senior. you become the heir to your house just to meet her as an equal. you love her to the point of invention. you both know that her time spent alive has an expiration date sooner than most, and so one day you decide to propose to her - even though you know that she can spend the rest of her life with you but you can’t with her, even though there are imperial rules forbidding interhouse marriages between necromancers, even though you’re here and she’s there and you’ve never even met in person - but you want her to spend her days with someone who cares about her. but you’re so young, only nineteen, and there are still all of those reasons listed above, and so she turns you down. but it isn’t because she doesn’t want to say yes. and then over the next year the letters come fewer and farther apart. and then you’re both invited to the emperor’s house - both of you, together, physically in the same place for the first time - and you show up and she’s here. and it’s like she doesn’t know you. she doesn’t spare you a glance. and you’re still so tender with her - you can’t help it, there’s care baked into you, and you can’t resist helping her, loving her, going so far as to kiss her knuckles in front of company - but still. she doesn’t acknowledge anything that happened between you. she’s moved on. she must have, because she’s spending all this time with the cavalier from the ninth - who is, by the way, two years younger than you, and that doesn’t escape your notice because nothing does - and what can you do? what are you supposed to do?
you tell your cavalier that you’re glad she’s spending time with someone who makes her laugh.

One for his Lyctors
Something that will never cease to amaze me is how well TazMuir writes the Lyctors. So I'm making it your problem ;). CW: Spoilers for Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth.
Let's start off by stating the obvious: the Lyctors are old. Whenever I mention "the Lyctors" in this post, I'm referring to Jod's original crew of eight Lyctors, and, more specifically, Augustine the First, Mercymorn the First, Gideon the First, and Cytherea the First. Those four are the ones we have met at the time of writing this. And they are old. They are each ten thousand years old. However, ten thousand is a number which may not mean much to you since you (presumably) have not even reached the age of two hundred. To quickly contextualise how colossal a number ten thousand years is, just remember that written history only extends as far back as five thousand years. In not so many words, my bbygirls are not actually very baby, and are, in fact, fucking ancient.
We, as humans, do not have any living reference for a ten-thousand-year-old being, aside from an occasional tree or a sponge, or perhaps a condiment bottle so deep in the back of your fridge that it would warrant a paleontological dig, but I digress. So how does Muir write her Lyctors so effectively?
Vicious dehumanisation
One of the most striking things about the Lyctors is the dehumanisation they have suffered over the past myriad. The first thing I noticed while diving into this subject (and by diving into, I mean I took a long shower one day and pissed off my family) is that the Lyctors do not have last names, and their first names function more as titles. Furthermore, the Lyctors are referred to as the hands, fingers, and gestures of the Emperor. In short, the readers and the characters of the Locked Tomb, including the Lyctors themselves, don't see the Lyctors as individuals anymore. Rather, their sole purpose in life has been reduced to just a soldier of the Emperor. Muir really shows the effects of the Lyctors' age; they are ancient, to the point where they have lost their own humanity and the only reason for their existence that they still hold onto is to serve the Emperor.
2. Their morals
Are extremely fucked up. Like, I cannot emphasise enough how fucked up the Lyctors are as people. Their morals are twisted in a way which can only come about from ten thousand years, rotting in deep space. For example, G1deon probably makes like 56 attempts on Harrow's life, and he doesn't give a second thought about it. When the other Lyctors find him, they don't really condemn his actions the way a human would expect another human to condemn attempted murder. To the Lyctors, life and death are both abstract concepts: life has lost all its meaning to the Lyctors, and thus, they do not see value in others' lives, especially the life of another Lyctor. Especially the life of a "Half-Lyctor." Additionally, Cytherea's plot to destroy the Nine Houses, while technically noble in its intent, is just insanely messed up. Yet, it makes sense in the context of her being a Lyctor, and, furthermore, someone who has suffered abuse for the last ten thousand years. She wants to bring justice to Jod, and for her, a small genocide is completely insubstantial. These people do not value nor understand life the way a human would, because they are unbelievably old.
3. The ways they break
Every one of the original Lyctors we see has a point in which they break, and when they break, we see a glimpse of the humanity peeking through. I could do character analysis on all of the Lyctors, but that would take a really long time. In short, we, the reader, get to see shreds of the people the Lyctors once were, and yet this only demonstrates just how shattered they are under the inexorable weight of time (yes, I use inexorable excessively now that I've read these books). Muir feeds us these pieces of the Lyctors' former selves to show just how buried that former self is.
In short, Muir does such a good job writing her Lyctors. They really are some of the most beautifully tragic characters I've ever read. I'm really just compiling some of the elements which I think Muir used to achieve the effect of "this character is bloody ancient." Feel free to add anything you feel that I missed (and I'm sure I missed a lot of stuff), and thanks for reading!

So the Unwanted guest has given me Pyrrha thoughts that makes me so so emo. If souls are permeable and the lyctor takes from the cavalier over time until parts of them eventually can’t be separated, then that means the person G1deon became was because of Pyrrha. He became Gods attack dog because of what he absorbed from Pyrrha!!
In the John chapters in NtN G1deon feels very different, still loyal to a fault but, he seems less hardened a little more squishy. The same could be said about Pyrrha. Pre-resurrection she was a cop and almost every example of her behaviour she’s yelling at someone, calling them out, telling them they need to toughen up and get thicker skin. Pyrrha also said in HtN that G1deon absorbed more of her than Harrowhark did Gideon.
So this means G1deon took the hardest parts of Pyrrha, the parts that were ruthless and determined. The stuff that made her the perfect soldier. Than when he dies at the end of HtN Pyrrha is left alone, in a body she didn’t want, as the softest version of herself. She felt so much harder for Wake, Nona, Palamedes and Cam, and those feelings of love scared her so bad. And I’m Ntn she’s trying so hard to be that old person and hold it all together, and she feels like she’s failing, but really she’s just succeeding at loving and taking care of people as best she can. Pyrrha is the loving person we know her as because G1deon took the worst parts of her and left her at her best and I’m going to scream.

A scientific consideration of cultural preservation in Gideon the Ninth
HYPOTHESIS: the Venus de Milo is in Canaan House
REASONING: John is keen on decoration (the rest of Canaan House, the Mithraeum, his fancy baby-bone crown). John has strong opinions on preserving things he considers ‘worthy’ (the earth, his friends, Shakespeare). Why not famous art? Canaan House is filled with old and rotting portraits - they can’t ALL be of Cyrus and Valancy.
EVIDENCE:
There was a single statue at the end of the corridor where it turned left. It must have once been a person, but the head and arms had been lopped off, leaving only a torso with beseeching stumps. - GtN p130-1 (when Gideon is looking for Harrow)
beseeching stumps?? It’s simply got to be the Venus de Milo. No stumps plead more tenderly:
Tumblr media
But she has a head! I hear you protest.
Aha! Now we come to Palamedes and Camilla doing psychometry to figure out the age of Canaan House:
"Fiat lux! If you want to talk improbable, let's talk about this"-a scrape of stone on stone-"being three thousand and some years older than this." A heavy clunk.
About 3000 years older than another part of Canaan House? Hmm! And what’s that Camilla is holding?
“Standing next to him holding a big wedge of broken sculpture and the flashlight was a tall, equally grey-wrapped figure with a scabbard outlined at her hip.”
“The cavalier narrowed her hooded eyes, fidgets gone and absolutely still; then she exploded into action. She dropped the wedge of sculpture with a clonk, drew her sword from its shabby scabbard before the wedge had bounced once, and advanced.”
SCULPTURE!
CONCLUSION: the Venus de Milo IS in Canaan House! However, it was decapitated by known practical thinker and simp Camilla Hect so that Palamedes Sextus could do his carbon dating easier without tiring out his necromancer noodle arms
SECONDARY CONCLUSION: Camilla was going to use the head of the Venus de Milo to bash open the laboratory hatch

Just realized that Nona looking no older than 14 even with the excuse of malnutrition means that Harrow looks no older than 14 as well, which retroactively makes Mercymorn constantly referring to her as younger and younger in HtN waaay funnier.
