Re-animator (Re-animator)
Altered States (local man takes so many drugs in a sensory deprivation tank that he devolves into a caveman)

Vampire Clay (BONKERS)
Killer Klowns From Outer Space (real good fun with awesome practical effects)
Audition (Takashi Miike is a fucking menace, great film)
The Lost Boys (punk vampires in the 80s, what else do i have to say)

Arturia Giallo, with a single pump and 962 balloons left in a large brown sack, inflating them one by one by hand on the roof of a sanatorium and tying them to the flying buttresses, grinning and giggling to herself: “Oh, this is going to be quite the spectacular laugh! I cannot begin to fathom the sheer trouble I’ll be getting into! How utterly thrilling!”

HAPPY HALLOWEEN 2023: THE TOP TEN
Hey there, Creatures of the Night! Once again it is that time of year where we recap what films have made the cut of Scream Scene's top ten best horror movies of all time! (all time defined as 1895-1960) If you’re looking for some genuine classics to check out this year, we’ve got you covered, with running times and where to find them!
#10. I Walked With a Zombie (1943)
The second Val Lewton produced film on the list, I Walked With a Zombie is perhaps best described as Jane Eyre in the Caribbean, but what is surprising is that the film is also a well researched depiction of Voodoo practices for 1943. The haunting imagery, sparse sound design, and dreamlike poeticism of this film might make it among the most unique zombie movies you’ve ever seen, made in a time with zombies were supernatural undead slaves, instead of reanimated undead cannibals. Do yourself a favour and check it out - it’s available to buy online in SD for $9.99 from Apple TV, and $14.99 on Amazon Video, Google Play Movies and YouTube. 1h 8m.
#9. The Old Dark House (1932)
James Whale’s definitive take on this traditional mystery thriller formula is a movie that will have you laughing right until the moment it has you screaming. In some ways, it’s a movie of clichés, with the protagonists seeking shelter in an old mansion during a rainstorm in the night and having to deal with the reclusive family they find within. But the dark, brooding cinematography, and truly shocking twists that rivet up the intensity over the running time, all contribute to make this a harrowing watch. It’s one part Rocky Horror Picture Show, one part The Addams Family, and one part The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I’m not kidding. The Old Dark House is currently streaming on AMC+, Criterion Channel, Flix Fling, and Tubi. 1h 10m.
#8. Horror of Dracula (1958)
Hammer Films had been producing X-rated horror and sci-fi content for a while by the time they got around to producing an adaptation of Dracula, but everything they learned from the success of The Curse of Frankenstein they applied tenfold to Dracula. From the subversive opening act to the shockingly graphic (for the time) finale, this film is full of action and excitement, as well as a sexually feral Count played by Christopher Lee for the first time. A Halloween crowd pleaser! Horror of Dracula is available to rent for $4.99 on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Cineplex, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube. 1h 22m.
#7. The Spiral Staircase (1946)
This RKO classic is another great take on the old dark house subgenre, from noir director Robert Siodmak. A masterpiece of suspense, featuring wonderful production design and dynamite performances from its cast, this movie will draw you in to the world of a mute servant named Helen trapped in a dark manor on a stormy night with a whole cast of lunatics! A forerunner of giallo (no, really!), this classic and classy thriller is not to be missed! The Spiral Staircase is currently streaming on Classix, Flix Fling, and Plex. 1h 23m.
#6. The Fly (1958)
While the 1986 remake may be more well known today, the original rendition of this body horror classic still retains a punch with its central mystery, compelling drama, and traumatic ending. Excellent creature effects and memorable moments like a woman screaming seen through compound eyes cement this as one of the great sci-fi/horror films of its time! The Fly is currently available to rent for $4.99 on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube. 1h 34m.
#5. Peeping Tom (1960)
While it may come across as fairly tame by today's standards, in 1960 the seminal British horror film Peeping Tom was considered so offensive it single-handedly ended the career of its director, former national treasure Michael Powell. Today, the film still has the power to disturb through its exploration of the relationship between victims, voyeurs, and viewers. Peeping Tom is currently available to stream on Tubi and to rent for $4.99 on Apple TV, Amazon Video, and Microsoft Store. 1h 41m.
#4. Gojira (1954)
Ishiro Honda’s classic giant monster movie, the progenitor of all kaiju and tokusatsu movies to come, is a masterpiece of ingenuity and imagination. But more than that, it’s a powerful statement about the horrors of nuclear war, an angry and relentless funeral dirge mourning for the Japanese lives lost and raging against the American foreign policy that continued to poison Japan with radiation even after the war. Godzilla is an apocalypse personified, the great revenge of the natural world against the hubris of man that has harmed it. But Gojira is also a film about the immense weight of personal and scientific responsibility weighed against the greater good, and its position on the use of weapons of mass destruction is perhaps more nuanced than you’d expect. Don’t let the campy reputation of Godzilla in the West fool you. Clear your mind of that and sit down to watch this powerful black & white epic. Gojira is streaming on Cineverse, Criterion Channel, Midnight Pulp, Plex, and Tubi, and can be rented for $4.99 on Apple TV. 1h 38m.
The American adaptation Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) is also worth a watch, and is available on The Criterion Channel, Plex, Tubi, and to rent on iTunes. 1h 20m.
#3. Cat People (1942)
Cat People is brilliant. The first of Val Lewton’s horror movies for RKO, it best exemplifies his shadow drenched, suggestive, adult, contemporary, and ambiguous brand of horror. Irena is convinced that if she experiences sexual excitement, she will turn into a black panther and kill the man she loves. Her husband is convinced it’s all in her head. What is the truth? Cat People gives the viewer plenty to chew on while being the first horror movie to understand that less is more, that the monster is scarier if you can’t see it, and also how to pull off a jump scare. You can find this absolute classic to stream on Amazon Prime, and to purchase for $9.99 on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft and YouTube. 1h 10m.
#2. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)
Finally dethroned from the number 1 spot after 265 episodes! Early on in the first Hollywood horror craze, Paramount Pictures managed to outdo their main competitor Universal with this masterpiece from director Rouben Mamoulian. With a use of sound, visuals, effects, script, and performance far beyond what most films were doing at the time, this adaptation reigns supreme among other versions of the same story. Fredric March utterly inhabits the dual title role, but it’s Miriam Hopkins’ performance that will stick with you in this superb examination of domestic abuse, alcoholism, and the beast that dwells within us. Currently streaming on the Criterion Channel, and available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play Movies, and YouTube for $4.99. 1h 38m.
#1. Psycho (1960)
It's our new number one! Not a big surprise, as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho changed the horror genre for decades to come. A low budget thriller based around its two big twists, the film's power is a little muted now that those twists have been thoroughly disseminated through pop culture osmosis, Psycho is still a master class in pacing and tension through its first half, and contains an incredible performance from actor Anthony Perkins. You can rent Psycho on Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Microsoft Store, and YouTube for $4.99. 1h 49m.
A new top ten with a new number one! Will Psycho keep its throne as long as Jekyll and Hyde did? Keep listening to Scream Scene to find out!

Sometimes on Roseville Beach
People ask me how to write a Roseville Beach adventure and the book has some good suggestions, but here the quick and dirty process any GM can use on the fly:
Pick a horror or thriller movie, preferably supernatural: giallo, folk, and cosmic all work.
Forget the end. Forget the characters. Forget the original setting. Keep that monster, though. Keep that monster. Also, keep those bossy heterosexuals, weaselly villains, and bad gays. You'll need them, too. The monsters, bossy/tricksy straights, and bad gays have three hit points just like everyone else.
You ditched the setting, so now you can just replace that setting with Roseville Beach.
Now gay that shit up.
Now make it even gayer.
Throw your table's gay Scooby team right at all that nonsense and see how much gayer they make it.
#make it gay#ttrpgs#tabletop roleplaying#tabletop gaymes#tabletop game design#make it mysterious#mysterious AND gay#no seriously gay it up

I had to cancel my daughter’s birthday trip for November in June.
Hello, My name is Denise Harris and my daughter is named Donna, who is currently 23 years old, This happened when she was due to turn 20 four years ago.
My daughter was apparently a member of this group named Team Plasma, I didn’t know much of it except they dress like knights (and later pirates and knights) and were about Pokémon liberation from neglectful trainers and I was aware she was a member, unfortunately she stole Pokémon in ‘guise of saving them’ and she ended up stealing an innocent little girl’s Purrloin with no remorse that I never knew about, I was angry and disheartened when I found that out.
There wasn’t a lot of activity that went on in Humilau City because most trainers there didn’t take kindly to them except Marlon for some reason and there wasn’t a lot of liberations…
Until June 10th, everything was perfect until I got a visit from Sages Ghetsis and Giallo, two of Donna’s employers and two of the Seven Sages, they were accompanied by two female grunts, one named Abby and the other Alicia aswell with an older woman that wasn’t in the medieval knight uniform but a women’s hanbok.
They informed me that Donna will be temporarily suspended from liberation duties and handed me documents why.
It turned out she was being punished for an unauthorized liberation for stealing twin Eeveelutions from a younger grunt named Mark who just turned 16 two days ago and filed all the documents necessary along with a male grunt named Cletus to have them released and HE was now in a coma and the woman that came with her was Mark’s mother.
And this boy was hospitalized because of her and Cletus, to my shame, I didn’t want to believe it at first but I was explained more
I even got reports that she had been harassing the grunt before the incident occurred where her partner told this boy that he was treating his twin Glaceon and Flareon like toys and that he should let them go because ‘they’re better off in the wild’ and she chimed in and told him he shouldn’t own rare Pokémon and even told this poor boy if his Eeveelutions stay with him, then they’ll become “another set of mindless slaves to someone who can’t understand them”.
She then ordered her Frillish to hurt him before another older grunt stepped in with his Glameow and Jellicent.
Cletus even angrily yelled at Mark ‘how dare he defy Team Plasma’ when his Glaceon bit him.
She ended up stealing them an hour later and putting them into a release room for Pokémon healthy enough to return to the wild, the others grunt Alicia found them and called Abby and the other male grunt, T.K to let them know, the latter went down to retrieve them.
Ghetsis told me Cletus and Donna tried to steal T.K’s Glameow but failed.
Donna and Cletus’ excuse was: “Because they can devote themselves to liberating Pokémon all over Unova without those rare Pokémon that they shouldn’t have!”
I was absolutely disgusted with Donna’s behavior and I asked if I could go down with them, thankfully they agreed and I had to fly on Ghetsis’ Hydreigon, The woman, Eun-min didn’t look at me out of anger and I couldn’t blame her for it.
I later quipped I had a trip set for her in November for her birthday and that I’m reconsidering.
When I arrived, N, the King of Team Plasma looked downtrodden and upset, he didn’t really speak much, I talked it over with the sages and agreed I would not only cancel the venue but the trip aswell, I wouldn’t get the money back but it is what it is….
I saw a highly distraught couple who were Cletus’ parents, the man was glaring at Donna’s partner Cletus.
When I told Donna my decision, she lost it on me, telling me I’m a horrible mother for cancelling her 20th and Kalos trip over a ‘privileged and spoiled rich boy’ and that I was punishing her for speaking her mind against ‘rare Pokémon’ when it wasn’t her fault Mark ‘threw a temper tantrum’ and acted the way he did.
N even said to her: “I feel like it was a mistake admitting you two into Team Plasma….” and left to go back to his room.
She begged me not to cancel her birthday trip but I told her that her behavior towards Mark didn’t warrant the birthday to Kalos of her dreams.
She stormed out in anger and I heard her cry to other grunts that she got no sympathy towards, I remember Cletus’ father getting up and angrily telling his son: “I will not be defending you if you get arrested and put on trial, boy….”
A few days later, Mark woke up, It turned out what Donna had done was trigger a condition called ‘broken heart syndrome’, Eun-min refused to let me see him, I apologized profusely to her, our relationship was not stellar afterwards and she flat out ghosted me.
A week later, she eventually let me see Mark and he was nothing like how Donna described him, Mark was a very sweet young man and the Pokémon here really liked him.
“Is he still a tantrum throwing spoiled brat like your daughter said?” She asked me, I shook my head.
Mark never resented or Cletus’ parents, I think he knows it’s not my fault Donna did what she did, he told me that Donna’s beef with him started absolutely earlier.
But years later, I’m stricken with severe guilt over my daughter doing these things, to a little girl from Aspertia to a Team Plasma member just like her….

La Vie en Rose 2024 - Halloween Roundup!
For this year's horror movies, I broke it up into themed blocks! Mostly, it worked well- here's the list, the blocks, and thoughts on that!
Grave Encounters (2011) | Ghostwatch (1992) | Lake Mungo (2010) |Banned from Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family (2009) | Noroi: The Curse (2009) | Ring (1998) | Kuroneko (1963) | Uzumaki (2000) | Pulse (2001) | Audition (1999) | House (1977) | Ju-On: The Grudge (2002) | The House on Haunted Hill (1959) | His House (2020) | Black Christmas (1974) | The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) | Halloween (1978) | Alien (1979) | Scream (1996) | Blood and Black Lace (1964) | Don't Torture a Duckling (1972) | Return of the Living Dead (1985) | Funny Games (1997) | An American Werewolf in London (1981) | Dog Soldiers (2002) | Ginger Snaps (2002) | Hellraiser (1987) | The Fly (1986) | Tetsuo: the Iron Man (1989) | V/H/S/Beyond (2024) | Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Blocks:
What If They Found Something - This was fun! It was interesting to see different approaches to this same general concept- what if a ghost hunting documentary actually found the evidence of ghosts? Not my first time seeing Ghostwatch but it really stood out this year, and Lake Mungo is an all time classic.
Monthly Halloween - I tend to like J-Horror a lot, but this block was, frankly, too long. Once I saw how many other blocks it could gradient into i got a little obsessed with doing so and it got fatiguing by the end. Ring and House are still incredibly good movies, and Uzumaki is... I don't think it's good? But it's a lot of movie and I find it fascinating. This is the first time I'd seen Audition and I almost immediately wanted to watch it again.
It's Coming From Inside The House - I wanted to include some haunted house movies- or at least house-based movies- this year and it did provide a nice tone shift! His House was absolutely, in every sense, a movie that came out in 2020
Slashics - Don't argue with me over whether Alien counts as a slasher. It was a last minute change- I was originally going to watch Prom Night there but the closer it got the more I realized i didn't actually want to. These movies are all so stellar though, Scream is one of my favorite movies of all time.
Yellow Pages - My first dip into Giallo! It was fine- I enjoyed Don't Torture a Duckling a lot! I ended up cutting this block short, however, because they weren't... totally horror movies in my opinion? And didn't fit the Halloween vibes.
Man's Best Friend - C'mon, who doesn't love a good werewolf? First time seeing An American Werewolf in London and that movie has some stellar practical effects and I thought some of the ways they had it be a haunting as well was super interesting.
Queer Bodies - I love body horror, and this grouping is specifically about how that plays with gender and queerness. I love what bits I've seen of Cronenberg, so The Fly was an absolute treat.
First time watches:
Banned from Broadcast: Saiko! The Large Family | Kuroneko | Audition | The House on Haunted Hill | His House | Blood and Black Lace | Don't Torture a Duckling | Return of the Living Dead | Funny Games | An American Werewolf in London | The Fly | V/H/S/Beyond
Closing thoughts:
This experiment was a massive success! Having my movies largely planned in advance was such a load off my mind, and themed blocks made it fun to see how some movies were in conversation with each other. For next year I need to focus on having more, shorter blocks- maybe 3-5 days?- and I want to maybe narrow down on some more specific themes. Maybe comparing older movies with more recent films of a similar premise? Originals and remakes? We will see.
