more backstory that i wrote up for patreon heh:

Simon and Tommy had a complicated relationship as brothers. 

At a young age, Simon basically wrote himself off as a lost cause, and did the best he could to make sure at least Tommy had a chance to be a functioning human being. After all, Tommy was the gentler brother, the dreamer, the one who looked like their mother (who'd walked out on them years ago to escape their father). But Tommy got bitter, got sick of the one always being protected, being babied. He lost respect for Simon, for the way he wouldn't fight back, and in a twisted way, grew closer to his father as a way to learn how to be powerful, strong. It backfired, and Tommy got wrapped up in some bad business.

Simon's kid brother died while he was deployed. He got the news in the letter, and it broke him in a big way. In the story timeline, it was years and years ago but it still hurts like hell whenever Simon thinks about him.

Tommy looks at the forest, the others shuffling anxiously behind him

It has been expanding (well, it was expanding from the first day) but it finally got big enough for someone else to notice he guesses. It only took them three months

He's not quite sure how they made the connection with Dream tho. They're right, but he has no clue how someone who did see it would know that Dream is at the center of this

(They probably just assumed. It's almost tradition at this point to blame everything on Dream)

The group of manhunters, about 10-ish people with Sapnap and Quackity in the front, look as prepared for a fight as they could be, their netherite armor shining like beetle wings in the sun

(Except Wilbur, who has nothing but his clothes and his cigarettes)

...if Tommy decides to lead them into the forest he's leading them to their deaths.

The armor is heavy and noisy. It shines obnoxiously in a way that would make it easy to spot on the pale oak even if they did manage to climb into a branch without letting every single creaking in the forest know exactly where they are, and it's too heavy to climb the dark oak trees

No one seems to have any invisibility potions either. He spots healing and regeneration and weakness and instant damage but no invisibility or night vision

He can help them with their search for Dream and by doing so he'll seal their fates.

"Tommy? Ready to go?"

Quackity catches his attention and Tommy turns to him

...he remembers afternoon after afternoon spent trailing after Wilbur as he and Quackity did. Whatever the fuck they were doing. Their weird sex rituals or whatever.

(He remembers watching The One That Bleeds, his wounds never healing as he sobs, crawling out of the blood oak, red roses tangled into his white hair. The burned brand on his back always seems fresh and it makes Tommy want to gag. He hopes that one is Dream's ghost. It seems too cruel for it to be him)

Tommy nods, walking into the forest, the fog welcoming him as an old friend as lillies of the valley grow angrily in-between his curls

He'll warn Tubbo and Fundy about the monsters and the false trees with guts and the flowers and the things that scream. Maybe Sapnap even. The rest of them? It was time for them to get a scare.

And when they get to the hospital, and Shannon is suddenly in front of him, he knows. “No,” He tells her, not caring about what he looks like, talking to someone no one else can see. He knows why she’s out here, flickering in the in-between, the awful smell of dirt and old air around them, and she can’t leave Chris, not again. “They’re going to be devastated. No, you can’t leave them, you can’t do that again.” He should feel guilty, almost yelling at a dead woman, a dead woman his best friend loved. He knows deep down it’s not that simple and with the sad, wistful smile she gives him, she knows it too.  “Take care of my boys, Evan Buckley.”  “I will,” He promises her, tears pricking at his eyelids. “I will. I promise. I’ve got them.”

"Are you there?" Lucy asked through her tears, half expecting no answer. Maybe this whole thing was just a trick made up by her own mind to try to cope with the torment she'd been subjected to.

Teen!Soap: Whoa… I didn’t know any of that. I didn’t even know he had a relationship with his bio family

Teen!Gaz: Only with his brother and mom. Everyone else is, uh, not worth his time… Tommy will be here for the weekend… if you wanna meet him

Teen!Soap: Would that be okay?

Teen!Gaz: Eh, bring Hong-Jin with you and we’ll have a sleepover. Dad won’t care and Tommy is pretty chill and won’t mind. Gotta have a good relationship with the in-laws
