Your tags are perfection, as per usual. I feel like that aspect of him genuinely is relatable to so many people in such a different way than many other characters, especially considering the way repentant vampires are usually portrayed. A vicious breath of fresh air. I wonder what form his growth as a character will take? Do you think he'll have a moment or realization? What could you see being the catalyst for that?

Astarion’s lack of repentance at this point is something that I actually found... binding me to him, in a way. I’m even more invested in his development now that I’ve already formed an attachment to him, in the sense that, I feel like I need to stick around just to make sure that this character I’ve grown so fond of isn’t actually evil to his core. And it’s not just me being optimistic; I think it would be thematically consistent with the significance of choice, freedom, autonomy, power, etc. attached to his character to explore contrasting sides of what he could be. If he chose evil when he was in power, wouldn’t it be interesting to see him choose good? And if he is just evil to his core, well... I’d find it a bit boring, but I’ll still be simping. It’s part of the risk I took falling in love with him in EA. 

I’m really just hoping for at least one realistic, optimistic outcome each for the non-romance and romance routes. I don’t know how much disbelief I need to suspend here, especially since they’ve already done a great job at creating such a realistic and lifelike character, but I’d be surprised if it took only the three acts of the final game to fully resolve all of Astarion’s personal issues, i.e. his lack of morality and repentance for his evil deeds, maladaptive behaviors acquired/exacerbated due to his trauma, and the need to heal from the trauma itself. I just don’t see several hundreds of years of conditioned thoughts and behaviors to disappear without equally intense and enduring conditioning in the opposite direction. 

That being said, I do hope to see some growth and change for his character by the end of the game. Even in Act 1, I’m seeing signs of trust and respect that I don’t think can be explained away by conscious manipulation on his part, such as his vulnerability to Tav during the bite scene, his honoring of Tav’s request to only feed on whatever they allow him to, and his lack of intention to bite Tav at the romance scene. While one could argue for practical reasons behind his actions in these scenes, I think the emotions and intentions he expresses during them are genuine and that they build trust between him and Tav. 

What do I think it would take for Astarion to have his “moment of realization”? Purely speculation, but from a symbolic standpoint and considering the themes that have been associated so heavily with the character, I think it’d take Astarion killing Cazador (his current preoccupation, for obvious reasons), the acquisition of his full freedom, and then... Astarion making a very bad choice and facing the worst possible justified consequences for it. 

Now, I can see one argue: didn’t that already kind of happen, with Astarion having been sentenced to centuries of slavery and unimaginable torture for what he did as a magistrate? I would say, while what Cazador did to him was a consequence of his actions, it was not in any way a justified punishment for his crimes, nor was it likely intended to “teach him a lesson” about morality (not that it would justify it). Regardless, Astarion doesn’t seem to have changed his morality due to what he endured, and only seems to have become more sadistic and less empathetic (which is actually very understandable given the experience). I think that Astarion will need to make the connection in his head that with his new freedom, his choices will determine his outcomes and what he deserves, and that his actions are what will make or break him. Maybe this means he will have the choice to betray Tav and the party at some point, and that your choices as the player will determine what happens here. 

I think a part of his story will also have to deal with all the stuff regarding his trauma, such as his complexes about appearing self-sufficient and refusing sympathy, and trying to distance himself from his own victimhood by refusing to show empathy to other victimized people. Not sure what could be the catalyst to accepting this part of himself, but I surely don’t believe that he lacks the ability to empathize, merely the willingness. I also don’t believe he lacks the ability to love and care about someone, he just has many reasons to reject the vulnerability it takes to do so unconditionally. 

He has so much potential as a character to grow and change. I don’t see it happening overnight, likely not even entirely in three acts, but I do hope to see enough change in him that a positive trajectory for him can be inferred moving forward. 

Another thing, I’ve been thinking about Astarion’s life in itself as a story in three parts. Perhaps not the typical three-act structure, but something more akin to: Part 1 - at the height of his power as a magistrate, Part 2 - his all time low with all freedom and autonomy taken away, Part 3 - post-Ilithid abduction, an acknowledgement of his crimes in Part 1, healing from the pain of Part 2, and a balance between achieving autonomy and self-efficacy while also learning appropriate trust and vulnerability. From a narrative standpoint as well, it just doesn’t make a lot of sense to me for Astarion to inevitably end up the same as he was in Parts 1 and 2 despite your choices as the player... especially when the concepts of freedom and choice are kind of his whole deal, aren’t they?

Can you please tell those of us who don't know much about Lily a little about her? I've always been curious from seeing her in your games!

Enthuse at length about my Witcher OC? sure xD 

Race: Demon Gender: Female Immediate family: None Sexuality: Bisexual disaster Occupation:  Witcheress, explorer 

Lily is thought to be around 400 years old, but she doesn’t actually know, and stopped paying attention at least three centuries ago. She shows no physical signs of aging.

Demeanour: Laid back and cheerful most of the time, but mess with those she cares about and she will hurt you. Maybe not now, but one day she will come back to you because she has all the time in the world. Less concerned about slights to herself, probably won’t even notice them. Will tease those she likes, but will tone it down if they’re getting uncomfortable. Does have a soft side but you have to earn her trust before she’ll show it.

Likes: Shiny things (especially if they’re sharp and pointy), learning, travelling & exploring, dancing, reading, red wine, having her head scratched at the base of her horns (very few people know this).

Languages: Can read and speak most languages of the Northern Realms fluently, has reasonable knowledge of other languages from her travels.

Preternaturally Strong: Lily’s strength is on par with a higher vampire.

Regeneration: Lily regenerates incredibly quickly – as fast, if not faster than, a higher vampire.

Always sober: Can’t get drunk due to how fast she heals, but keeps trying anyway!

Soul-free: Doesn’t have a soul.

Long Witcher 3 verse background under the cut (basically her about from the sideblog where I RP her @simplly-lilly ).  She has other verses - modern, Nioh 2 based, a couple of ‘old’ verses set 50-ish years after Witcher 3, but this is her main one.

Lily ended up in the Northern Realms because she investigated an interesting shiny disc she found in her own world. She appeared in an intricately drawn circle in a mage’s lab which was very pretty but she was far more interested in the shiny baubles he had hanging around so wandered over for a closer look. Master Bertrand, the mage, got quite upset that she just ambled out of his summoning circle, he wasn’t aiming for a horned woman but as she’d shown up she should at least have the decency to follow the rules.

Bertrand wrote a work, Master Bertrand’s Treatise on Summoning & Containing Demonic Entities, based on his summoning of Lily that made him infamous among goetia magic users, mostly because none were ever able to replicate his work and summon their own demon. Lily maintains this is because he only summoned her by accident because she went to look at the shiny disc.

Nonetheless it is possible to summon her, something that has so far been managed accidentally by one scholar in Oxenfurt and a group of witchers messing about in Kaer Morhen. Being summoned is disconcerting and makes her hungry, as such her standard advice for anyone trying to summon a demon is to dispense with the theatrics and make sure you have snacks on hand for when they get there because they’ll be grumpy. If she trusts someone enough she’ll give them her sigil so they can call her whenever they want.

Master Bertrand periodically subjected Lily to horrific experiments and she is heavily scarred as a result, but most people never notice as she heals so quickly her scars are barely visible. Those who do look closely might notice that a lot of them look medical, almost vivisection-like as the mage wanted to find out if demons were the same on the inside as people, among other things. Lily doesn’t like to talk about it and as those who do notice the scarring tend to put it down to fighting she generally doesn’t have to.

Lily ended up staying with Master Bertrand for about a century. He taught her various languages of the Northern Realms and how to read, which he regretted doing as soon as she found the library and started disappearing for weeks at a time. Lily stayed with the Bertrand as long as she did despite the hideous experiments he conducted on her, because it never occurred to her that she could leave.

There were protective wards around the house, and strong magical barriers controlling where she could go. The Mage experimented with magical implants for a while as a way to track and control her, but her accelerated healing powers just pushed them out almost immediately. When he needed to restrain her for an experiment he would have to use massive amounts of magic that would leave him drained for days. As she’s concerned dimeritium is just another shiny metal, it is no more or less effective at restraining her than anything else, and she’s very fond of silver.

Master Bertrand had an ongoing contract with a Cat witcher who brought him interesting bits of monsters for potions and occasional live specimens if requested. For one set of experiments Bertrand hired Cat to spar with Lily, he wanted to see how her speed and strength compared to a witcher having already established she was stronger than humans. Cat won easily and told Bertrand that if he wanted accurate measurements she would need to be trained otherwise the results would always be skewed, so Bertrand hired Cat to do just that.

Cat not only taught Lily hand-to-hand combat and sword play but how to use a whole range of blades, and how to hide them to pass the most thorough searches. Her witcher training would be obvious to any witcher who sparred or fought her, probably down to which school. She can fight very well, although she’s not quite as fast as most witchers, but she can also get reckless because it’s only pain and she heals. She’s very protective of her friends and while most of them are fast healing witchers, she regenerates faster so will put herself between them and peril if the need arises.

Cat also taught Lily how to make witcher potions and an exciting array of poisons, much to Master Bertrand’s annoyance as Cat (and later Lily) refused to share this knowledge with him. Cat tried to teach her to use witcher signs but abandoned it after she blew up half the lab trying to igni a candle.

Cat and Lily were a couple for almost 70 years. Cat made her promise that when he died she’d return his medallion to his school, however he didn’t set a time limit on doing it so she now wears it as her own. Cat also made her promise to look after his blades and put them to good use, most of the blades secreted around her person used to belong to Cat and they have all seen a lot of use. She’ll talk about Cat if pushed, but won’t bring him up voluntarily.

Cat died after being betrayed by Bertrand. Until Cat died she respected the magical barriers around the house, but the pain and fury over his death tapped into her demon nature more fully than any experiment and the barriers came apart as she forced through them. The ensuing fight with Bertrand was when they both discovered how distorted and warped magic can really get around her when she goes full demon. It was the last thing he ever discovered as shortly afterwards she ripped his heart out.

She also destroyed a lot of the darker corners of his lab, but she left the library and house intact. Much as she hates the place it’s always handy to have somewhere to go back to if absolutely necessary. She has an interesting collection of magical knickknacks courtesy of inheriting Bertrand’s collection, most she keeps because they’re shiny but a couple are actually useful.

She likes witchers and vastly prefers their company to humans, mostly because they’ve travelled a lot and seen a lot of shit so always have an interesting story to tell. They also know what it’s like to mostly pass as human until people get up close. When very bored she has been known to put up a contract on herself. Occasionally it works.

She will break her horns off herself if she’s travel through somewhere sensitive (looking at you Novigrad) but she doesn’t like doing it because they itch when they grow back, particularly when they’re going through the velvet shedding phase. Her horns usually grow a bit quicker than her hair, but if she takes a massive amount of damage they’ll grow back more quickly as her body kicks into healing mode.

Lily is a firm believer in hugs, and gets particular joy from hugging tetchy witchers as she’s sure they’d enjoy hugs too with a little practice. She just ignores it when they’re a bit awkward as it’s often been a while since whichever witcher she’s tackle hugged this time last had any friendly contact.

What do you think it would take to make Regis angry or annoy him?

Something I highly relate to Regis is his patience and lack of anger. For him to get angry and annoyed is highly slim, again possible however. For we all have our ticks.

Death is inevitable, a hard truth while you befriend mortals. And the vampires except that, most didn't care mind the death. I mean, come on, blood is quite important to the race. Emiel is different, still accepts death, but god forbid if you threat any close ones of his. It's even harder when it's loved ones fighting each other. He'll be mad at both, but protect them in any way he can of course. Using his trust. His love and care. That will the trigger to the crossbow.

What annoys him is when someone then takes advantage over his friends. It hurts him too, seeing his friends in pain absolutely kills him. He may hide how much it hurts him since he tries not to be super emotional.

But there's quite more to that, he's lived so long to see everything. His anger at killing for no reason and for the fun it will make him throw fists. Even in his younger days he didn't kill for fun, maybe to grab a few drinks with him, but still what he did in the past upsets him. He hates the not needed death, cruelty, injustice, racism and the immoral. Regis is so damn tired of it all. And ironically he's annoyed with himself at times, the lack of sleep, no longer fitting anywhere and even his secret longing for blood. Though annoying him will not force him into bat form. He tries to avoid it anyways.

2. On a cold day, who likes to snuggle up to the other? The one main reason Dessi loves the cold, is being able to bury herself under blankets. If there's a certain vampire to latch on too then it is even better. Her limbs wrap around like kudzu and are equally stubborn to untangle from, though Dettlaff does not mind the least. An equally upside and downside to cool weather snuggles is that they both have ice blocks for feet. Great for when she places her icicle toes on his calves or thighs when she is in a teasing mood. Not so great, as he will get his revenge the same way. 

5. Who is more likely to kiss their partner on their forehead? Dettlaff. He loves how it always manages to break Dessi out into a grin every time. Though if there is something for Dessi to stand on, she will try to do it in return, or pout long enough for him to lean over.

13. Who still blushes when their partner compliments them? Both. They are both terrible in taking compliments without their cheeks burning a bit, but will go out of their way to compliment the other. Though nothing gets Dessi’s cheeks bright red like when Dettlaff describing her in depth with artistic detail.

4.  How would they describe each other to loved ones who haven’t met their partner yet?

So I always had this weird daydream idea of her meeting his parents. So I would imagine he would start off by introducing her like, “Saska is my mate and she’s over three centuries old. She’s extremely kind and considerate and is ready and willing to grow with me through my life and accept me for who I am.” And then let it slide that she’s not a vampire once he knows how they react to him telling them about her.

Saska on the other hand, Avallac’h was surprised when she told him but was still supportive. But if she were to explain to someone, an old family member or friend or something about him, it would probably go something like this.  “His name is Regis, and he’s about a hundred or so years older than myself. I actually didn’t trust him when we first met, crazy I know. But even from day one he has helped and supported me. Most people when we walk by, I can hear them say, ‘How did a man like that get a girl like her?’ and honestly, I have no idea because he’s the best decision I’ve ever made.” And same with Saska. Depending on who she was talking to, she would either wait to mention he was a vampire, or wait for Regis’s opinion before just giving everyone his personal details like that.

8. Who would want to take cute pictures for Instagram?

100% Saska. She would definitely be the one to be like, “Let’s take a picture!” And then probably remember that vampires don’t necessarily come up in photos. Lmao. But deep down Regis enjoys it. He would love how excited she would be to show him off.

12. If they each went to go buy an outfit for one another, what would they get?

Regis would buy her either something she would like, similar to her normal outfit of an overcoat, leggings and boots. Or something more formal like the super ornate and revealing formal dress she conjures up when she needs to. Probably a somewhat revealing dress tbh ;)

Saska would definitely buy him a new coat because of the patches and holes he’s had to sew on his own. That’s a definent. But similar to Regis, a formal suit because she has never once seen the man in anything fancy. And damn it, if she dreams about this man in a suit, then damn it she’s going to see it.

And they both would be extremely delighted to know that the two of them literally think the same way when it comes to clothes.

I imagine it’s most likely the sort of situation that occurred similarly to Monster Hunter: World and Soulcalibur; like a small scale form of the Conjunction of Spheres. Creatures from either realm bleeding into one another and causing a bit of an issue for anyone and everyone including the Witchers who have to deal with the new and unknown creatures. Akane doesn’t quite remember much aside inspecting a suspected cursed blood dragon nest, fighting one and then waking up in a small dark cave connected to an unfamiliar forrest infested with Endrega, as she mentioned to Regis in a small interaction she had with him on Twitter. She was able to deal with and remove them fairly easily with her useage of fire and her claws.

It’s very likely that someone might have seen her in her partial or dragon form, she doesn’t quite like humans and prefers to stay away from them. She already basically banished humans from her clan after the death of her daughter over a thousand years ago. If she’s hungry enough her draconic instincts will kick in and she will eat them from time to time. Regardless, she will still attempt to mingle about with them just to learn more about where exactly, she is at the displeasure of the local humans as well as her for their frequently prejudice behavior against elves. I wouldn’t be surprised if a witcher contract for her head is already out there as she does commonly use her partial dragon form and dragon form to not only get around, but keep others who might want to attack away from her.

Das kinda tru but my most frequently used medium for elaborate pieces tends to be pencil! It may end up looking like pen when i post online because i put it thru the odd filter and mess around with contrast a bit
