“Sorry sir, with all due respect, are you sure you don’t want be to be apart of the girlgroup debut team? You know the one with Nayoung Unnie and Sungyeon Unnie.”

The most awkward silence Jangmi had ever experience followed, causing her to once again open her mouth and start blabbering.

“Not that I don’t trust your vision… You’re a great CEO and I believe you know what you’re doing with each of your trainees. It’s just…uh… They’re a boy group. And I don’t mean there’s anything wrong with boy groups, I love One Direction. I spent the last few years wanting to marry Niall. It’s just… um… there’s a lot of them… won’t it be quite hard and weird if there’s one random girl there. Especially since their debut project has finished filming. Didn’t they promote themselves all over the country? Won’t everyone think I’m a last minute edition.”

She was met with blank stares on all the management teams faces, and a hint of annoyance from some random guy in the back.

“No. No. I don’t mean to say that you are including me in Seventeen because you need another member. I’m sure you have thought about this very carefully. No way am I mocking or judging you about this, it’s just-”

The manager in charge of all the female trainees motioned for her to be quiet.

“You’re quite an energetic one aren’t you.” The CEO chuckled to himself. His other employees agreeing behind him.

“I’m sorry sir. I didn’t mean to talk that much. I-”

“How about you let me finish explaining what’s going to happen.”

Jangmi nodded, tightening her lips together.

The CEO signed. “I’m going to be honest with you. We need more buzz for Seventeen. They had their tv show and a few people recognise them, but ‘Shining Diamond,’ didn’t create any hype. We can’t afford to debut them unless we are certain that the public will give them attention.”

The vice CEO then began to speak. “The best way to get their attention is to do something outrages. Nothing too crazy to make them hate Seventeen, but enough to keep them wanting more. And our marketing team found that there’s barely any mixed member groups.”

“But usually these groups aren’t well received by the public, as by the time they’ve got the public attention they start dating each other and it becomes a whole mess. But I’m sure that won’t happen to you” The CEO quickly interjected, before signalling back to the Vice CEO to continue.

“That’s why we were thinking of adding you to the group. Stick around for the first few comebacks, until Seventeen make a name for themselves, then we can move you to the girlgroup, or you can go solo, or you could be an actress

Jangmi waited for a few seconds, before it was clear that the floor was hers.

“I understand that. And I’m very thankful for the opportunity. But I don’t think my parents would say yes. They wouldn’t be keen on me living with 13 boys. But they would be happy if I was in a girlgroup.” She replied, stressing the idea of her debuting with Pledis Girlz.

“Who said you’d be living with them?” The CEO interjected.

Her eyes went wide open. Had she been reading this entire situation wrong. “I’m so sorry, I thought I would have to stay with them. Isn’t that how the KPOP industry works.”

“You can stay with me.” Hyelim Unnie replied, from behind all the staff. Jangmi was so nervous when Kyla told her their CEO was wanting to meet with her, that she didn’t even notice her dance instructor in the room.

“Think of it as after hours dance classes. You need to be up to par with the rest of the dance line” She continued, with a wink.

“Dance line!” Jangmi yelled, before quickly realizing how loud she had been. She quickly stood up and bowed down to the CEO.

The CEO started speaking again. “The rap line in Seventeen is, how can I put this, very masculine and it’d be quite strange having a little girl there with all these tall boys. The performance team is a lot more versatile, and they have wide range of dancing styles between them. Having you there will allow you to do partner dances as well. Plus the current maknae Chan is there, so your short height won’t be too noticeable.”

The vice CEO swiftly stood up from his chair, and walked over to Jangmi. “I know this is very different and very new. But wasn’t your goal when you left Australia to become a performer. You’re getting an opportunity to make it happen.”

“Plus, if you don’t accept this, there won’t be many other chances. There are barely any halfies in this industry, especially ethnic ones. We’re quite progressive but not everyone is.”

Rolling her eyes inside her head, Jangmi knew what the CEO was saying was true. Even if he worded it very poorly. She understood from the very beginning that she’d have to work 10x harder than every other trainee, since she wasn’t the stereotypical idol. And throwing this opportunity away would do more damage than good.

She stood up once again, putting her right hand out for the vice CEO to shake. She liked him more than their CEO anyway, especially after that last comment. “If you think this is what’s best for me, I’m-“

The door to the office slowly opened, causing Jangmi to stop talking midsentence.

“Ahh Seungcheol! Or should I say S.Coups” Of course their CEO was nicer to boys than girls, Jangmi thought. Sexist asshole. “Just the person I was going to find. Jangmi said yes to joining Seventeen.”

Jangmi’s eyes widen. She hadn’t accepted anything yet. How dare he assume she would join-

“Hello! I’m glad you’re going to be joining us. I’m Seventeen’s general leader Seungcheol, but my stage name is S.Coups,” greeted the boy, shaking Jangmi’s hand which she then realised that she had yet to put down.

“I’m Rydel, but you can call me by my Korean name Jisoo since it’s easier to pronounce.” She wiped her hands on her skirt. Seungcheols’ hands were quite sweaty. She guessed he had come from rehearsals, the sweat dripping down his forehead being a big giveaway.

“She’ll be going as Jangmi, so make sure you call her that. None of this Jisoo nonsense.” Their CEO chirped in, Jisoo Jangmi held back the urge to roll her eyes. Instead, she turned and faced the CEO and bowed again in apology.

Sensing her discomfort, Seungcheol patted her back and smiled. “It’s a pretty name. Plus we can bully Shua since his Korean name is also Jisoo.”

The vice CEO came and placed his hands on both their shoulders, pushing them closer together. “Why don’t you go introduce Jangmi to the others. We’ll get everything else sorted, as well as telling your parents.” The last part of his sentence directed at the Jangmi.

With his arms around their shoulders, he quickly pushed them out of the room. “Don’t scare her away.” He yelled.

Jangmi smiled at Seungcheol, who she then realised had already started walking back to where Jangmi presumed the rest of her new group would be. She quickly speed walked to catch up to him. She didn’t exactly know what was going to happen, but she had a good feeling in the pit of her stomach.

BTOB: okay tbh this isn’t a specific memory but btob helped me get through a lot, i used to cry whenever i listened to it’s okay because their vocals actually touched me so much and that song is so good? the lyrics meant a lot to me (especially when the song first came out cuz that’s when i was going through a lot mental health wise and just hearing “i believe in you” was like DAMN)

CLC: i remember i found clc when their debut teasers started coming out because of btob and somehow i fell so in love with them that they ended my existence as a boy group stan and i have been a girl group stan ever since??? i don’t have any specific memory that comes to mind but whenever i think of them i remember how after they debuted i got so much happier like overall as a person

Dreamcatcher: honestly this isn’t a specific thing but whenever i think of dreamcatcher i think about how i need a new song from them like every day?? in the summer literally the day after fly high came out i asked my friend when their next comeback was gonna be... i’m messy

Pristin: OKAY so i very specifically remember the day that they announced kyla was part of pledis girlz (and somehow i got the url kylamassie .... literally how) i think pristin is another group where there aren’t many specific things for... like i can remember a lot of things but most of all i just love them? 

Twice: i have so many memories about twice but i think one of the biggest things that they will always remind me of is how they brought me and my best friend closer together! we watched sixteen together and tbh we were already close but i just will always have fond memories of twice helping bring us closer. also i was so mad when momo got eliminated but the gods smiled upon us all and she was added back xo

i genuinely love predebut seventeen especially that video where they were with pledis girls and the girls introduced themselves ! Was minnie ever friends with anyone of the girls?

I feel so bad for never including them but they disbanded before I really got to know them. So sorry, I will include them on a separate list with like former idols of Pledis/HYBE :)

And I will get more into Minnie’s predebut years once I start writing her into 17TV and such, but for now:

Minnie was never one to approach people first and didn’t understand why people born in the same year were supposed to be so much closer with each other, so that never mattered much to her.

Rena, Sungyeon, and Minnie got closer because they could speak the language that Minnie was most comfortable in. The fact that all three of them LOVED writing, made it really easy for them to find things to talk about. She would never admit it but at times, she was definitely slightly jealous of the girls being on their own and being a proper girl group and being able to do girl things. Minnie was very happy with Seventeen of course, but anyone would get a bit jealous watching the Pledis Girlz have fun and be close, you know? S.Coups tried to push her to become friends with them since they were the only other girls in the company, but since she could sort of tell that they had formed a tight bond, she didn’t want to be the odd one out and just start hanging out with them. Minnie never got too close with the ‘97 Liners but wouldn’t be opposed to meeting up with them, they just wouldn’t call each other “friends”. Back then their height also intimated Minnie slightly as she used to be smaller.

During the time both groups were active, she of course got to know all of them better, but she stayed closest with Sungyeon and Rena.

WANNA ONE: ‘Burn it up’ vs ‘Energetic’

Ladies and gents... the voting of WANNA ONE’s (promotion) debut song is over, but we still don’t know the results. Kinda sucks, right? 

Luckily, YMC will reveal both complete MVs... but WANNA ONE’s only going to do proper promotions with one of them. However, we international Wannables couldn’t vote anyway. Sucks even more, right? 

Still, there were countless discussions on the world wide web about which song would suit better as their final debut track.

And since some of you seem to really enjoy my Produce 101 articles (I’ll put links of them at the end of this post), I thought I will let you know what I think about ‘Burn it up’ and ‘Energetic’... or at least what I’ve heard and seen so far of both songs and MVs. 

Yeah, I know I mention this every single time, but this is just my opinion – not yours... or maybe yours. Don’t know... don’t care. I just wanna write my thoughts down. 

Time for a pause... take a deep breath... and let’s go...

This whole BiUvsE-ride started with a teaser – and that one almost killed me. I was always a huge fan of NU’EST. Of course I am! I’m a Play Girl – and if you are or were (we don’t really know if After School still exists) one of us Play Girlz, you should support Pledis’ first boy group. 

Anyway, the first teaser started with Pledis’ Hwang Minhyun, and – HOLY SHIT – this man is without any doubt extremely good looking (not that I hadn’t known before, but such a sweet reminder always gets appreciated by my naughty self).

I felt like I was in trance while watching this perfect human being arranging food, licking his own finger, rubbing his ears – you trying to kill me, Mnet... yeah? 

And then, suddenly ‘Burn it Up’s drop happened, and I was like – GOD DAMMIT! THIS IS SO FUCKING AWESOME! A few seconds later the sound-teaser of ‘Energetic’ appeared – and I am sorry to say this, but I was unimpressed. How can you put the teaser of a hype-song before a teaser of something more – let’s say – gentle?!

Right after watching Minhyun’s video, I was so sure that almost everyone might agree with me. GUESS WHO WAS SO FUCKING WRONG?!

I’ve looked through hundreds of comments, and besides all those Minhyun-visual-god-praises, most people – and with most I mean more than 9 out of 10 – said that ‘Energetic’ sounds better.

I know, I know... music is always something that depends on a certain taste. But it was not their taste in music that bothered me. It was their argumentation! (We will talk about this in a few seconds.)

Well, one after one teaser appeared. It doesn’t matter if it was Jihoon’s shoe fetish, Jaehwan’s guitar playing, Guanlin’s adorable English, Daewhi’s puppy face, Jinyoung’s fresh style, Jisung’s unbelievable sexiness (who would have thought that, nya?), Woojin’s dance skills, Seongwu’s perfect self (yeah, even in that outfit!), Sungwoon’s mature and handsome appearance or Kang Daniel’s... well, fuck... it’s Kang Daniel (it doesn’t really matter what he does or did or seems to do) – everything was so incredibly visually pleasing! (The only thing that bothered me was the ridiculous amount of pink lip stain and skin softener... Just stop that, Mnet/YMC! JUST STOP!)

But under every single teaser, I found (almost) only comments of ‘Energetic’ supporters. 

Most of these supporters said that ‘Energetic’ would suit WANNA ONE’s image better. Well, if you look at all those over-softened beautiful teaser videos – yeah, I have to agree. But if you look at their Produce 101 evaluation performances – I have to disagree. 

Seriously, it seems like Mnet wants people to vote for ‘Energetic’. With the teasers, the (so-far revealed) magazine pictures, the group’s colors – everything cries for something more soft and gentle... talking ‘Energetic’.

Don’t get me wrong – it is okay to already reveal a concept. And ‘Energetic’ doesn’t sound bad at all! It seems like a wonderful song. 

However, most ‘Energetic’ supporters said something that made me – well, kind of furious. 

There’s a reason why I turned my back on K-Pop for almost two years. This reason was first of all the over-used innocent girl group concept that made me sick after some time (and it still hasn’t stopped), and second was the boring and generic music. But I returned, and all thanks to groups like 24K and BTS who brought hype back to K-Pop.

While looking through all those ‘Energetic’ supporters’ comments, I’ve realized that most called ‘Burn it up’ generic. Why? I don’t understand this at all. WHY?

I personally think it is the exact opposite. ‘Energetic’ sounds like every single boy group track that was released within the last few months (of course there are exceptions). 

Last week, SNUPER released a song called ‘Shooting Star’ – looks and sounds pretty much like ‘Energetic’. Even HOTSHOT’s ‘Jelly’ has literally no similarities with ‘Burn it up’. Four days ago, Starship uploaded MONSTA X’s ‘Newton’, and the concept and music video look a lot like ‘Energetic’. Need more? Then check out MYTEEN’s ‘Amazing’ or VAV ‘ABC’ which all got released within the last few weeks. Oh come on... even EXO’s ‘Ko Ko Bop’ would fit into 'Energetic’s concept (except for the dope drop – I LOVE THAT DROP). So... ‘Burn it up’ sounds generic? WHAT THE HELL?! REALLY?!

‘Burn it up’ is quite obviously a hype-song, and there are literally no hype songs in K-Pop right now. The only group that makes proper hype-songs is BTS. Even 24K stopped doing such kind of music. (Look at 24K’s ‘Only You’.) Funny thing is... some actually said that ‘Burn it up’ sounds like an iKON song. Well, I guess you haven’t heard much of iKON’s music so far.

But I have to agree that ‘Burn it up’ sounds like a BTS song... because it’s fucking HYPE! Hype songs are songs that make your heart race and shout and dance and they produce WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING-moments. 

This is the music I prefer to listen to. I admit it. I am a hype-junkie! Since I used to be a dancer, I love hype more than anything else. However, I hate nothing more than anything else than people who say that hype sounds like BTS... BECAUSE BTS SOUNDS LIKE HYPE. Not vice versa. 

Unfortunately, most people within the Hallyu community think BTS=K-Pop which I understand. BTS are probably the most successful boy group of all time, and the reason is not because they are from a popular label. The reason is their fantastic music (plus their crazy fandom). And guess what... their fantastic music contains mostly out of hype songs. And that’s why they are so popular. Even my ex and his friends – who don’t like K-pop at all – listen to BTS (and 4MINUTE) because their music is dope. Hype entertains everyone! Not only people who are into K-Pop – it gets everyone! My mom who only listens to classical music likes BTS’s ‘Not Today’ because it blows her mind! THINK ABOUT IT!

Anyway, people say WANNA ONE’s ‘Burn it up’ sounds generic because it seems like a BTS song, right? To all those who think the same: Get some proper K-Pop education! We need more boy groups who produce hype songs to get international recognition. It’s not a cute and gentle song that attracts attention... it’s powerful music that blows everyone away!

Okay, okay... I will stop my rant for now, and tell you why I prefer ‘Burn it up’ without mentioning the so important hype factor.

WANNA ONE’s members couldn’t be more different. A fact is that four out of eleven members took part in Produce 101′s dance evaluation (yeah, I know six were in the vocal evaluation, and only one in rap). And those four performed the fantastic stage of ‘Get Ugly’... just a reminder. 

Don’t you want something similar? Don’t you want something that makes you lose your shit? Not because of amazing vocals (with Sungwoon’s and Jaehwan’s voices we get that anyway), but because of a dance performance that will make you scream and fangirl like a lunatic?!

Last week, the MV teasers of both song’s were uploaded, and many commented that ‘Burn it up’s MV looks – well – better. But it’s not only the music video: we got to see a tiny glimpse of the choreography while – during ‘Energetic’s teaser – we saw something that looked like a male version of TWICE’s ‘Signal’. DON’T GET ME WRONG! ‘Energetic’ looks good – without any doubt (Sungwoon with those glasses and the bubblegum? HELL YEAH!). But come on... ‘Burn it up’ looks AND SOUNDS fucking dope. I want them to perform this live – as long as they can.

TL;DR ... ‘Energetic’ sounds really good, but it still seems like a track that every single other boy group would produce these days. ‘Burn it up’ is a typical hype song which we have only seen during BTS promotions within the past few years. And just because BTS makes similar music doesn’t make this kind of music generic or over-used.

After the first Produce 101 season, I loved most of the girls that got into IOI (my bias didn’t make it, but Kim Jonghyun didn’t make it this year as well – so yes, fuck it). But their debut song was shit – literally shit. ‘Dream Girls’ still makes me cringe AF. 

I just want WANNA ONE’s debut song to be a song that gains international attention. I want a song that makes my family want to watch Produce 101 season 2 with me together. I want a song that makes me want to learn the choreography. And as nice and sweet ‘Energetic’ sounds – I don’t think any of this will happen with this song as final debut track. 

(Short explanation: I am from a super small country in middle Europe. I have only seen a few K-Pop groups live because I’ve traveled far far away. And international recognition means A LOT to me. So all those bitches out there who are able to attend KCON LA... fuck you! I AM SO JEALOUS!)

But we all know that ‘Burn it up’ won’t make it, right? It seems like powerful songs will die out in South Korea. It doesn’t matter if this goes for girl groups or boy groups – power and passion are dead. All what leads to success are visuals and a successful label (with a few exceptions of course). 

I am just happy that YMC and Mnet will reveal the MV to ‘Energetic’ as well as the MV to ‘Burn it up’. Even though WANNA ONE won’t do any proper promotions with my favorite debut track, at least I can always watch it online, right?

Just in case you don’t know. I drank a whole bottle of wine while writing this... because I am so scared that most of you might hate me for what I’ve said. But I just want to mention – no matter which song gets chosen – I will always love my eleven babies of WANNA ONE, and I will support their debut... no matter what.

How do you pass the time these days? JR: We had promotion activities up until this week, so I’ve been doing music show broadcasts and practicing a new song’s dance in preparation for our Japanese concert. But here and there we have breaks, so during those times I play games and watch anime.

What kind of games do you play? JR: Like RPG and FPS games, and sometimes I play Playstation games. I think I learn faster than other people. Also, lately I watch things like internet broadcasts to gain knowledge on the games. I want to try “Overwatch” but since I have to buy it to play, I’m trying to get the members to come with me to a PC bang (t/n: internet cafe).

On a V-app broadcast, you introduced a manga cafe. It seems you really like manga. JR: I like anime, but since normally a lot of anime is based on manga, I read a lot of manga books. I’m not picky about genres. I’m the type to watch 1, 2 episodes to see if it’s really fun. Because of our activities, for a while now I haven’t been able to watch, but recently I’ve been watching “Shokugeki no Soma” and it’s really fun. When I watch it, I get really hungry.

Nu’est’s nickname is “Cartoon-dols.” Do you ever reference manga? JR: I’ve seen around 200 animes, so I guess I think about the feeling or atmosphere they have. Anime itself feels a lot like fantasy. But the things in manga compared to real life are pretty different. The characters’ appearances are different, and just looking at the kind of gestures they make, I know I can’t do those. (laughs)

This album gives a dreamlike feeling. You also dyed your hair blue. JR: Since I have dark skin, honestly at first I was worried that a bright color wouldn’t suit me. It felt awkward for a while, but after it week it turned out okay. For four weeks I did activities like that, and then I dyed it black, but again, the hair color felt awkward for a week before turning out okay. My pillowcase is white but now it has blue and black stains. Also, during practice I wear a hat, but since I sweat a lot, even the hat got stained.

One of the songs in the album, “Daybreak,” is a duet with Minhyun. How did that come about? JR: We arranged the songs in order by the time of day, and the song for the break of day happened to really suit Minhyun. If I didn’t take part, it would have been a solo for Minhyun, but since we were given the opportunity, we wrote the lyrics and had fun together. Kim Minkyung from Pledis Girlz appeared in the music video, but Minhyun was really awkward with her for their scenes together, so I took a picture of it and teased him, saying “Do it properly!” But when it was my turn, I ended up being being really awkward too. There’s a scene where Miss Minkyung whispers in my ear while I’m lying down sleeping, but she whispered “Are you alright?” so I burst out laughing.

All the members are the same age and play around, but you have to act as leader, too. Was it ever hard? JR: To be honest, if I was the oldest, I could probably just do it. But because we are all the same age with one older hyung, I take the direction of talking to them in a natural way and asking them questions. In the 3 years since our debut, we’ve had several issues, and at that time after thinking about it and deciding a solution by myself, I told them to do it my way. Doing it forcefully that way will get something done, but for the members following me, it was hard on them, and for the current me, it’s also hard on me. That’s why now I’ve started to ask questions like “What do you guys think?” and “Do you think it’d be okay if we did it this way?” Of course I’m going to believe that my own opinion is right, but I could be wrong, so now I ask the other members what they think and we go by majority vote.

You have a mature personality. JR: Lately I think, “I’m 22, but why do I feel like I’m 28?” (laughs) I see my other friends, who are thinking like and having fun as 22-year-olds, but I feel like I can’t have fun in the same way. Maybe it’s because I have more experience. When my friends want to do something they will have a consultation with me. I had a friend who wanted to start a hair salon, so I told that person things like, “A hair salon is difficult work, so you have to endure it well.”

As the leader, what do you think is absolutely necessary for Nu’est? JR: This is something we must constantly work on, but I want to say that team work is the most important. Teamwork is actually extremely difficult to do. We say “Our teamwork is really strong!” but to be honest, the five of us lived in different places and know different people, so figuring out how we can best work together is an ongoing project.

You’re now a group that’s been active for 5 years. What activity do you absolutely want to do in the future? JR: A Melon Music Award or the MAMA award ceremony? It would be great to receive an award, but even just standing on the stage would be good. At the end of the year, when we’re watching an award ceremony together, we say things like, “Next year, we’ll definitely stand on stage.” We’ll work hard so that it can happen.

Nayoung, Minkyung, Kyungwon, Kyulkyung, Eunwoo, Yebin, and Siyeon auditioned for PD101 S1. Nayoung and Kyulkyung made it into the final group, IOI. The members who competed did not yet use their stage names.

Under the name PLEDIS GIRLZ, the ten members now in PRISTIN, made an unofficial debut in order for Sungyeon (then, Shannon) to appear on JTBC’s Girl Spirit! Here is one of her performances! They also released the track WE, initially under the name PLEDIS GIRLZ.Eunwoo was also featured on the track Sickness with SEVENTEEN's
