Welcome to the second installment of the Wonderful World of Darklords Summer Blockbuster series! In this episode, we're going to look at the only movies in our series that actually busted blocks: the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. (Mostly the original trilogy, but we'll touch on 4 and 5). Topics discussed include:
Which of the MANY candidates for darklord we settled on, plus AU discussions about the other possibilities (including potential torments, how to make the domain reflect them, and the type of adventure you can run with them, if you're wondering why this episode passed our usual 2:10 ceiling);
The highly gameable hallmarks of a Pirates of the Caribbean adventure (credit to Ryan George's Pitch Meeting series), which you can use to make your own sessions feel appropriately Pirate-y;
Trade wars between the East India Trading Company and the Boritsi Trading Company, both of which are constantly beset by pirates, and WHY ARE WE NOT PLAYING THIS GAME RIGHT NOW;
Chicken Bone;
and more!

Chapter 1
Chapter 2 here we go!!!
“What was that?” Ben wondered, sitting up a little straighter.
“Not sure,” Ari replied, releasing Kay and getting to her feet.
Ben followed suit and they walked over to the ledge together. Neither of them noticed the mermaid pressing herself up against the side of the ship, holding her breath and praying they didn’t look down.
Behati emerged from her quarters and walked out to join the crew. She had one hand behind her back.
“Eric,” she said.
Ben turned to face her.
“If that really is your name,” she said.
The color drained from his face. “What are you talking about?”
“I found this among your things,” she replied, and brought her hand forward. She held up his ring. “The crest of the royal family is on it.”
While Ben had not worn any jewelry during his escape, he had packed his ring just in case he needed it. It was an heirloom worn by every prince in his father’s line. It was silver, with mermaids on the side, holding up the crest in the middle. There were diamond chips on the four corners of the crest, and the mermaids had tiny emeralds for eyes.
“You had no right to go through my things!” he argued.
“You are a guest on my ship!” she shot back. “I had every right. Who are you? The prince? A lord? Who?”
“There are other things to worry -”
“Whoever is on that ship can wait until morning when we can see,” she snapped. “Tell. Me. Who. You. Are. Now!”
Ben shrunk away, his back hitting the ledge.
“Okay,” he conceded. “You guessed right. I’m the prince.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. “So. Benjamin is your name.”
From below, your heart gave a flutter. Prince Benjamin. What a handsome name!
“Ben’s fine,” he said nervously.
“Well, Ben, we’re taking you home,” she said firmly. “I won’t be followed and charged with kidnapping the prince.”
“No, please!” Ben cried. “I can’t go home yet!”
“Why?” she demanded.
He hesitated, looking away for a moment. He locked eyes with Ari, who placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“She can’t understand if you don’t explain,” she said. “And she can’t trust you unless you trust her.”
He looked back at Behati.
“My father is forcing me to get married,” he admitted.
You stiffened at that word. Married?! That wasn’t good news for you.
“He keeps bringing all these princesses and high born ladies to visit, hoping I’ll fall for one of them,” he went on. “But they’re all...dreadful. And he’s sort of run out of options now.”
Behati softened. She approached him slowly, took his hand, and pressed the ring into his palm. Then she curled his fingers around it.
“Was being honest really so hard?” she teased. Then she became serious. “Ben, I understand wanting to escape. Probably better than most people. I hope you’re not under the impression that I lack empathy or compassion.”
“It’s just...I don’t know you very well yet,” he chuckled.
“Know this,” she said. “I don’t turn my back on people in need. Being forced into a marriage...that’s terrible. Even princes have their share of trouble, eh?”
It was such a dramatic shift in her, it was throwing Ben off balance. Behati had become suddenly very soft. Even stranger, he liked knowing that she had it in her.
“They do,” he agreed.
“You may remain on my ship for as long as you need,” she said. “Or as long as you’re useful.”
She winked and released his hand. She stood in the center of the deck and looked up at the starry sky. Ben looked as well as he slipped his ring back on. He had never seen so many stars.
“It’s a beautiful night,” the captain said. “There should be music.”
The crew cheered. Ari went to grab her fiddle. Ben shrugged and decided to join the merriment. You pulled yourself forward again to watch.
You watched them all night, fearful that leaving now meant your last chance to see humans up close would pass. Behati, Ben, and the others played music, danced, drank, told stories, and laughed. It seemed that with honesty, came the beginnings of friendship. It almost made you sick with envy. And yet, you could not pull yourself away.
They carried on all night. The golden hush of the morning came over the water, and the sun began to peek over the horizon. Ben had fallen asleep against the mast, and much of the crew was now lazily plucking at instruments or dozing softly. Behati was still awake. She retrieved a spyglass from a strap on her hip and she looked over at the ship that was approaching from the night. It was time to find out who they were.
She knew almost all the other pirate captains. They had an agreement. Since Behati’s interest was not in riches, they left her alone. In return, she left them alone, but with one condition - they could not trade people. Any pirates she caught dealing in the slave trade would be challenged. And she had never lost a battle.
Ben stirred awake. He looked up and saw Behati checking things out. Relief came over him. He had enjoyed himself during the night, but the concern about the other ship was still eating at him. He scrambled to his feet and walked over to stand beside her.
“Who are they?” he asked. “Do you know?”
Her mouth was turned into a deep frown. She lowered the spyglass, looking ready to spit a bullet. Ben had never seen such anger.
“Slavers,” she said slowly.
“How do you know?” he wondered.
“The insignia,” she told him.
She held out her arm and pulled up her sleeve. He stepped back, horrified. The skin was deformed by a deep scar - a brand.
“Are they other pirates?” he asked.
“No,” she said. “These are the professionals.”
“That’s not right,” he said. “My father outlawed slavery years ago.”
“If you think slavery ended because your father signed a piece of parchment, you are a fool, little prince,” she retorted. “He may have signed the law, but he hasn’t enforced it. The navy is too busy fetching princesses to patrol the waters apparently.”
Ben swallowed as he watched the ship coming closer.
“You know how to use that sword you carry?” Behati asked.
“I’ve been trained,” he told her. “But I’ve never had to use it...y’know...in earnest.”
“Well, brace yourself,” she warned. “We’re commandeering their ship.”
She turned to face the crew. She put her index finger and pinky in her mouth and whistled. Ben flinched at the sharp, high pitched ring, but the rest of the crew perked up.
“Wake up, ladies!” she shouted. “It’s liberation time!”
Everyone immediately got to work. The anchor was hoisted and the sails were opened. You clung to the rope you’d used to climb the ship in the first place and held on as the ship began to move. You were scared, for sure, but mostly you were excited. You just hoped it wasn’t too dangerous.
After what felt like years, the ships were stopped astride each other. You were still firmly on Behati’s, but within a few yards of being sandwiched between them.
Ben looked between Behati’s hard expression and the smirk of the captain on the opposite ship. He was an older man - probably around the king’s age - but with a leathery complexion and an ugly sneer. His hair was gray and frayed at the ends. He had a look in his eye that struck Ben as evil.
“Captain Behati, I gather,” the man said. “I’d say your reputation precedes you, but you’re much more beautiful in person.”
“Shove it,” Behati returned harshly. “Surrender your ship, and I won’t hurt you.”
“‘Fraid I can’t do that, love,” the man replied. “I’ve got cargo to deliver.”
“People aren’t cargo, slaver,” she snapped.
“Now, we can be respectful, can’t we?” he said. “My name is Captain Reginald, and I -”
Behati interrupted him with a swift drawing of her sword. “I don’t care what your name is. Release your prisoners or I will feed you to the sharks.”
“Not before I introduce you to a friend of mine,” he replied. “Say hello to Davy Jones for me!”
Reginald went for the pistol on his hip. Ben saw that the old captain’s finger went right to the trigger. He whipped it out with surprising speed for his age and immediately squeezed it. Ben dove in front of Behati, and felt the flesh on his right shoulder explode before tumbling over the side of the ship and into the darkness of the sea.
“BEEEEEEEEEN!”
Behati’s cry was the last thing he heard before everything went black.
The sounds of a battle erupted above you. You watched in horror as Ben’s body fell right past you and hit the water with a sickening splash. Without hesitation, you dove in after him. As soon as you hit the water, you saw a small, shiny object glint above him. It was the ring.
You snatched it from out in front of you and slipped it on your finger. Then you swam hard after Ben’s sinking form. With the help of your fins, you reached him quickly, wrapping your arms around his chest, and pulling with all your might. Your muscles ached from the weight of him and the resistance of the water, but you pushed vigorously back toward the surface. You just hoped it wasn’t too late.
When you broke through, Ben began to cough, to your great relief. At least he was alive. Water sprayed from his mouth and he struggled to inhale, but he was alive. His eyes barely opened and he looked at you.
“Thank you,” he said blearily.
“Come on,” you replied. “We have to get you back on board.”
He mumbled something more that you didn’t understand. The sounds of what was going on up on the ships unnerved you. Swords clanged as they clashed. Explosions rang out - just like the ones that had sent Ben overboard. It was not a sound you were familiar with and it made your stomach flip. People cried out with anger and pain. Others hit the deck with a wound. Would putting Ben back on the ship be safe?
You looked up and saw that the commotion was coming from the other ship, not Behati’s. But if you climbed straight up, you would be seen. So, resituating Ben in your arms, you swam toward the bow to go around Behati’s hip and get him up from the other side.
You started out and Ben let out a soft groan with the movement.
“I’m sorry, Ben,” you told him desperately. “Hold on just a little longer!”
He muttered some more under his breath. His eyes fluttered as he glanced over to look at you, but he couldn’t keep them open.
Your body was screaming with the effort of pulling him along. Ben was larger than you, and muscular, not to mention all the clothes he had on were weighing him down even more. You were only halfway there and already exhausted. You pressed on. You couldn’t let him die.
Panting, you reached the other side. Thankfully, there was a net ladder hanging down. You kicked toward it and grabbed a lower rung.
The wake from the rocking of the ships made emerging from the water more difficult. Especially since your primary concern was keeping water out of Ben’s mouth. The last thing he needed was to swallow a bunch of sea water - or worse, get it trapped in his lungs.
There was another rope hanging down beside the net ladder. You used that to strap Ben securely to your body. Then you began to climb. It was the most difficult climb of your life. Your arms were on fire with how hard they were working, and it felt like there were miles between you and the top. Grunting, panting, and sweating - which you had never experienced before - you fought your way up.
After hauling him up you dragged yourself - Ben attached - over the railing. You flopped onto the deck on your side and caught your breath. You gulped in the air and released it heavily, before swiftly getting to work to untie the rope. Your skin was red from it rubbed you raw, but you couldn’t focus on the sting. Ben was lying alarmingly still.
You tossed the rope back over the side and then rolled the prince onto his back. You put your ear beside his mouth. Low, rattling breaths were just barely escaping.
“Ben,” you said gently, placing a hand on his chest. “Ben, are you in there?”
His eyes slowly opened once more. They were a beautiful shade of green. You held his gaze in that moment, and everything around you seemed to stop. It was just you and Ben, connecting, meeting for the first time.
Then he squeezed his eyes shut, turned onto his left side, and coughed up more water. When he was done, he winced and grabbed his wounded shoulder before falling onto his back once more.
“Wh...who are you?” he wondered groggily.
“Shhh, don’t talk now,” you replied. “Help is coming.”
Ben’s vision was blurry. Your face moved in and out of focus, but he was certain he had never seen you before. He had never seen anyone that beautiful in his life.
You looked around for anyone who could help, but Behati and her crew were all on the other ship. Although, things had quieted down significantly. A majestic form came flying through the air, and you recognized it as Behati. She landed with a loud thud and she looked up, meeting your eyes.
You gasped and threw yourself overboard, hoping she would chalk up what she saw to her imagination. You sailed through the air and twisted yourself into a diving position so you hit the water smoothly. It felt soothing on your hot, aching body. Before you returned to the depths, you poked your head out and listened. You heard Behati rousing Ben. Satisfied, you swam down.
Ben was waking up gradually. He hurt all over. He distinctly heard Behati above him, fretting like a mother hen, but still managing to insult him.
“You idiot, Benjamin!” she scolded. “Getting yourself shot to protect me?! For what? Some chivalrous glory?! I could -”
“Behati, please,” he groaned. “I did it because you’re my friend.”
He looked at her and saw watery eyes and almost smirked, but he was in too much pain.
“It hurts,” he winced.
“Take him to my quarters,” she said.
Ari put his injured arm around her shoulders and eased him to his feet. He looked at the captain.
“What about the captives?” he asked her.
She smiled. “All free. I never lose.”
“Where will they go?” he wondered.
“Home, I suppose,” she said. “I gave them the ship.”
“Did you let any of the slavers live?”
“All but the captain,” she replied.
“Tell the ones you freed to take the ship to the capital - to my father,” he said. “There the slavers can answer for their crimes, and we can get the people back to their homeland by royal escort.”
Behati’s smile widened and her eyes shone.
“You really are a prince,” she said.
“As proof of their authority, let them take this,” he began again, reaching for his right hand.
He blinked when he saw there was nothing on it.
“Oh no!” he cried. “My ring is gone!”
Behati frowned. “It must have come off in the water. I’m so sorry, Ben.”
“S’alright,” he returned. “I have a seal in my bag. Will you write up a document, and I can sign it for you?”
“Kay, write the necessary letters,” Behati said. “Ari, you and I will tend to that wound.”
She put his free arm over her shoulders and together, the women carried him into the captain’s quarters. They lay him upon her desk. Then Behati retrieved some rum from the shelf on the wall. She handed it to Ben.
“You might want this while we stitch you up,” she said.
He sat up and took a swig, making a sour face as it burned its way down his throat. She laughed.
“What’s the matter?” she teased. “Nothing that strong in the palace?”
“No,” he wheezed. “We usually just have wine.”
She and Ari exchanged a look and laughed.
“Keep drinking, little prince,” Behati instructed. “We’ll have you patched up in no time.”
“Bottom’s up,” he replied, and drank again.
***
You rocketed away from the scene as fast as you could swim. When you were safe within the depths, you stopped to catch your breath again. You needed to take in everything that just happened. You snuck to the surface, watched humans for an entire night, just barely saved the prince's life, and now you were on your way home after being gone for hours. Oh, no. You were definitely in trouble again.
Well, you had to face the music. You weren’t going to put it off this time. Plus, the sooner your father finished yelling at you, the sooner you could get some sleep. Your eyelids already felt heavy.
As you made your way home, you kept thinking about Ben and that moment you had locked eyes on the ship. Something electric had sparked between you. There was something there that you could barely explain, and yet you felt it. It wasn’t just that he was handsome, there was more to him than that. You wanted nothing more than to see him again, and know all there was to him.
You slowly swam to the throne room, once again peeking inside to see the kind of mood your father was in. He was swimming back and forth in front of his throne, hand on his chin, eyes on the floor. He was worried.
“Father?”
He whipped around, took in the sight of you, and flew over to gather you up in his arms.
“Y/N!” he cried. “Where in the seven seas have you been, child?! We’ve been looking everywhere for you!”
He pulled away and looked you up and down. His mouth turned down into a frown when he spotted the angry red marks on your skin from the rope of the ship. They had calmed a lot, but not enough.
“Y/N, what’s this?” he asked. “What have you gotten yourself into?”
“Before I explain, promise me you won’t get mad,” you began.
“I will make no such promise!”
You sighed. It was worth a shot.
“Father, I…” you trailed off. Now was the time to be honest or lie your fins off. “I was exploring another shipwreck.”
Better to lie for now. If he found out what you had done in its entirety, he might kill you.
“Y/N!” he shouted. “We’ve discussed this! You’ve got to let go of your silly dreams of humanity! It’s childish, it’s dangerous, and deliberate disobedience of the law! I think you’re trying to give me a heart attack at this point!”
“I just have an interest!” you shot back, throwing your hands up. “What’s so wrong with that?!”
Your father snatched your wrist out of the water and drew it closer to him. You gulped. You’d forgotten Ben’s ring was on your finger.
“What...is this?” you father demanded.
“Something I found in the shipwreck,” you told him. “Just a trinket.”
He examined your form once again. “You’re lying to me. This ring has no signs of age on it. Those rope burns were not from loose rope. Where have you been?!”
You wrenched your arm free and cradled the ring to your chest. You narrowed your eyes at him.
“I was at the surface,” you said defensively. “And I’m glad I was there. I saved a young man who might have drowned if I -”
“DON’T!” Triton bellowed. “THIS TIME YOU’VE GONE TOO FAR!”
You shrank back, frightened.
“Father, h-he might have died!” you argued.
“And GOOD RIDDANCE!” he shouted. “What need do we have for one more lousy human, huh?! Do you really think yourself a hero for saving that animal’s life?!”
“He’s not an animal, he’s a prince!” you returned.
“I’ve tried to be understanding, I’ve tried to be patient with you, Y/N, but nothing works!” he cried, exasperated. “But so help me, I am going to get through to you!”
“What are you going to do, ground me?” you challenged. “Well, I’m a grown woman!”
“Fine, if you want to be grown and independent of me, then so be it,” he snapped. “Guards!”
Two young mermen swam in from the corridor.
“Arrest the princess,” Triton said. “Take her to the outpost.”
You gasped. “Father, no!”
The outpost was an open area far away from the palace. Prisoners were chained by the fin to a solitary post hammered into the ocean floor. It was isolating and terrifying.
“You broke the law, Y/N,” your father said. “And you will face the consequences. Anyone who makes contact with humans gets twenty four hours at the outpost.”
The guards each took one of your wrists and clapped irons around them. You could see the conflict in their eyes as they did so. To arrest a member of the royal family was something unheard of. But your father’s point was to make an impression. And he did.
You shot him one last pleading look, but he turned away. The guards led you out of the throne room, out of the palace, and through the town. The other merpeople watched in shock as the princess was escorted out of her own kingdom. You saw Lorelai as you passed her place and looked away, hot tears forming in your eyes.
You didn’t fight when the guards put a chain on the end of your tail, where it met your fins, and then attached it to the post. One looked on with sympathy.
“We’re sorry about this, princess,” he said. “But if you’d just obey your father, this wouldn’t happen. He’s only trying to keep you safe.”
“Just go,” you said moodily. You had no desire to comfort him about what he was doing, or validate your father in any way.
With a sigh, they left you there. You allowed yourself to break down after that. You were tired, emotional, and just wanted to relax. And now, you were being punished for what you considered as doing the right thing. You gazed at the ring and recalled again Ben’s eyes. As you looked at the chain around your tail, you decided this was worth it. You still did not regret saving his life, and you were more resolved than ever to see him again. As soon as you could.
But for now, you had to close your eyes. Your weariness was catching up with you. So you laid down and slept off everything.
***
“Who saved me?” Ben asked as Behati finished the last stitch on his shoulder. Ari had already left to continue her regular duties.
“What do you mean?” she returned.
“Someone saved me,” he said. “A woman. I didn’t recognize her but she had to be one of yours, right?”
“Ben, every member of my crew was on Reginald’s ship,” she explained. “No one was on board or in the water.”
“That’s impossible,” he insisted. “I remember someone carrying me...sort of dragging me around...and then when we got back on deck, I saw her.”
“What did she look like?” Behati asked.
“I’m not sure, it’s all sort of fuzzy,” he said. “But I know I saw her. She spoke to me and everything.”
Behati took a moment. She saw the mermaid on the ship, caring for Ben and gazing longingly at him. She always knew that mermaids existed, but this was the first one she had ever seen up close. Behati did not want to reveal her in case it meant trouble for the rest of the merpeople.
“I don’t know what happened, Ben, but when we got back, you were already there and safe,” she said. “No one was around.”
Ben frowned. He knew what he remembered. Though he could not recall the full picture of the woman, she had to be real. He could not have survived without her.
“Why is it so important to you?” Behati asked.
“Because something...happened,” he said. “We locked eyes and for a moment, I felt like...never mind, it’s stupid.”
“Ben,” she said assuredly, taking his hand. “It’s not. Tell me.”
“I felt like I’d found the woman of my dreams,” he said.
She almost smiled, but faltered. “I hope she’s out there, then. I really do.”
***
You woke almost an hour later. As you stretched, you felt...watched. Which seemed impossible since there was nowhere for anyone to hide out here. Even so, you couldn’t shake the eeriness.
“Hello?” you called out, feeling stupidly cautious.
“Triton’s daughter,” said a raspy, spine chilling voice. “All chained up on the outpost? How cruel.”
“Who are you?” you demanded.
You sounded braver than you felt. You did not recognize this voice.
“I represent someone who can help you, princess,” the voice continued. “Someone who’s been keeping an eye on your situation.”
“Who?” you pressed.
“Sycoria,” the voice said.
From the foggy depths, it approached and came into view. It was an eel. The large, yellow eyes blinked at you as it came closer.
“The sea witch?” you questioned, though you knew the answer.
“Yes, child,” the eel replied. “She can get you what you want.”
“Why does she care what I want?” you wondered.
“Sycoria has sympathy for all creatures in need,” he explained with an over-kindness that made your skin crawl. “Come with me and see what she can do for you?”
“I can’t go anywhere,” you said. “I’m chained here.”
You pointed to the irons.
“I’ll make quick work of that,” the eel said.
He flicked his tail and the chains evaporated. The bubbles floated away and you watched them go, amazed.
“Now, are you coming?” he asked with a toothy grin.
You looked up, remembering the surface. Then you looked at the ring.
“This may be your only chance to see him again,” the eel said. “Are you willing to let that go out of a little thing like fear?”
You narrowed your eyes.
“I’ll see Sycoria.”
“That’s a girl,” the eel said. “Come with me.”
He swam off. You had to hurry to follow him. A jolt of nerves almost made you stop. But this was your shot at being human, at earning Ben’s love. You would never get another. You forced yourself onward.
You swam behind the eel for nearly an hour. Finally, you reached a cave. It was glowing an ominous violet color. You came to a halt at the mouth.
“Don’t be shy,” the eel said. “Go on in.”
You gulped. If your father knew about this, he would lose his head. But, he didn’t understand you. He would never understand that what you felt with Ben in that split second meant the world to you. You entered the cave.
It was dark at first, but you maintained your pace toward the spooky glow. When you reached the end of the entrance tunnel, it almost took your breath away. It was similar to your collection cove, only much bigger, and filled with more oddities than you could even imagine. Bits and bobs of things you had never seen before.
“Um, hello?” you said nervously.
“Ah, the princess,” said another mysterious voice. It was smokey and alluring.
From around the corner, she entered. The half woman, half octopus sea witch. She was thin and tall, with wild, white hair and vivid purple eyes. Her lips were drawn into a wide smile.
“I’ve been waiting for you.”

10 Fantasy Thoughts: Is Cooper Kupp your 2021 fantasy saviour?
What a week for individual performances.Derrick Henry and Aaron Jones followed up lacklustre Week 1 performances to win plenty of matchups. Aaron Rodgers did what Aaron Rodgers does with a monster bounce-back performance. Austin Ekeler was used heavily in the passing game with nine catches on nine targets. Just like we all thought. Well, some of us. Week 1 overreactions are almost always followed by a market correction, so maybe keep the hot takes to a low whisper instead of shouting them out to the world. It’s very unbecoming. But hey, if people want to make it known that they think Robert Woods is washed or that Saquon Barkley suddenly became a bad running back, then be sure to seek them out and offer to take those “terrible” players off their hands. Do them that service, take that weight off them on this journey, almost like their Fantasy Sherpa. And then crush them. (All weekly rankings courtesy of Fantasy Data) 1. Cooper Kupp’s revelation I will be the first to say that I thought that the biggest benefactor of Matthew Stafford heading to Los Angeles this off-season would be Robert Woods. Through the first two weeks of the year, it’s becoming apparent that I might be just a little bit off. Kupp has been nothing short of brilliant in the first two weeks, compiling back-to-back top-10 weeks, including the top spot in this week’s finish. He has 21 targets which places him in a tie for fifth among wide receivers, 16 catches (tied for first) and 271 yards (third) with Stafford under centre and occupies a ridiculous 37.5 per cent target share. It feels like every time the Rams get possession that Kupp is going to get an opportunity to score because he constantly looks like he’s wide open. Sean McVay is also unleashing Kupp out wide as opposed to the slot where he’s primarily been deployed from since his rookie year. That percentage of slot snaps has dropped from 73 per cent in his sophomore year in 2018 to 44 per cent through the first two games of 2021. Alpha wide receivers don’t play out of the slot and it seems as though the Rams have found their alpha receiver. Kupp is going to have an off game here and there and I expect Woods is going eat a bit more into Kupp’s target share, but make no mistake about it, Kupp is going to have a monster year. 2. Derek Carr, the unlikely addition to the QB1 group Steady. Decent floor. Capped ceiling. Great second quarterback. Those have been terms used to describe Derek Carr’s fantasy relevance since coming into the league, but we might be seeing him turn a corner and maybe, just maybe, he’s actually as good as we’ve seen in the first two weeks. It’s certainly early in the schedule, but it’s not like Carr has been up against cupcake defences to start. Baltimore’s D has playmakers and the Steelers basically shut down the Bills’ aerial attack in Week 1. He currently leads the league with 817 passing yards and has four touchdowns to one interception, while occupying the QB8 spot. With the Dolphins on the docket next, it looks like another matchup that Carr can exploit, especially considering that this Raiders offence looks like it has some pretty good pass catchers outside of Darren Waller. Henry Ruggs appears ready to take the next step forward after not living up to the rookie hype of being a high first-round pick last year. Hunter Renfrow is a reliable slot receiver and Bryan Edwards has all the tools to become a good receiver at this level. All this while the running game hasn’t been too great and Josh Jacobs is dealing with an injury. Carr is going to have to be on top of his game in the coming weeks as he gets the Chargers, Bears, Broncos and Eagles in the four games following Week 3's Dolphins game. By then, we should have an accurate assessment of where Derek Carr fits into the QB1 conversation. Something tells me that this is for real. 3. The Mike Williams we’ve been waiting for He’s had a 1,000-yard season and a 10-touchdown season, but both did not occur at the same time. We’ve been drawn in by his tantalizing talent and incredible ability go make absurd leaping catches, but we’ve never seen the consistency that warrants a regular spot in your lineup. Enter new Chargers offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi, formerly of the New Orleans Saints, with Williams in a contract year and you've got a recipe for success. Lombardi talked up Williams in the off-season and is using him like he used Michael Thomas with the Saints. Justin Herbert even talked about his skill set and also wanting him to get the ball more. We’re now seeing the fruits of these discussions. Williams is currently the WR5 (tied with Amari Cooper) and has 22 targets in the first two games, parlaying those into 15 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns. That’s the good stuff right there. I, for one, have been a big proponent of Williams ever since he was drafted out of Clemson and I’ve drafted him basically every year he has been in the league, so this one feels good. 4. Brandin Cooks = Automatic Cooks may be the most underappreciated fantasy player that we’ve seen in a long time. All he does is get the job done and his ADP almost never reflects his production at the end of the year. Last season, Cooks was the WR17 in 15 games with 81 catches for 1,150 yards and six touchdowns on only 119 targets. In five of seven seasons (including his rookie year where he only played 10 games), he has accumulated at least 65 catches, 1,082 yards and five touchdowns. It’s a pretty impressive resume that probably doesn’t get enough credit, especially in fantasy. The question now becomes, can Cooks still thrive with Davis Mills as the quarterback in Houston following the hamstring injury to Tyrod Taylor. What we know is that there isn’t a lot of competition for targets and that Houston is going to have to throw a lot in order to stay in games, so I will bet on Cooks getting plenty of looks and still manage to be in the WR2 or WR3 conversation going forward. 5. Teddy Bridgewater, the Wild (AFC) West’s newest gunslinger In a division that includes Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr, Denver needed to being to have success through the air to stand a chance to stay alive in the AFC West arms race. Teddy Two Gloves was always perceived to be a dink and dunk type quarterback as evidenced by his Air Yards Per Target last season which had him near the bottom of the league for starting quarterbacks. Something has changed. It could be the poor competition faced so far as the Broncos took on the Giants and Jaguars, or it could be that Bridgewater has finally been unleashed. Through the first two weeks, he sits fourth in Intended Air Yards behind Trevor Lawrence, Derek Carr and Tom Brady and fifth in Completed Air Yards behind Brady, Carr, Daniel Jones and Justin Herbert. What we can deduce is that Teddy is slinging it early on. The Broncos offence has been very good through the first two games and gets a peach matchup against the awful Jets in Week 3. Teddy Bridgewater has become quite the fantasy asset in Denver with a plethora of weapons at his disposal and if they continue to let him sling it, we could really see him stay in the conversation as an every week starter and a back-end QB1 by the time the season is done. 6. The Cowboys RB timeshare…really? One of the Cowboys running backs is RB12 and the other one is RB26. My guess is that you’ve figured out that Pollard is the RB12 and Elliott is the RB26. Yes, the above statement is accurate. “It has to be because Pollard is making the most of limited opportunities though, right?” Incorrect! Pollard has 23 touches compared to Elliott’s 31, so yes, Pollard is making the most of his opportunities (7.7 yards per carry and seven catches on seven targets), but the workload is a lot closer than it has been in years past. Elliott just doesn’t look like nearly the same player that we saw two years ago and looks more like the player that we saw last year. So maybe this is just what he is at this point in his career. On the other hand, Pollard looks great seemingly every time he touches the ball. You’re going to start Elliott every week, but now you’re going to have to start Pollard every week until we are given a reason not to. The thought process is that the workload going forward is going to look very similar to what it is now, but there’s also a chance that if Zeke doesn’t perform that we could see Pollard get even more looks as the season progresses. 7. The Patriots backs are relevant again The best thing that happened to the Patriots running backs was to get rid of Cam Newton as the team’s signal caller and bring in a less athletic, more accurate passer in Mac Jones. That much has been evident over the first two weeks of the season. Damien Harris has taken over as the lead dog in that backfield and established that he’s going to be the guy to get the bulk of the carries. We’ve also established that James White is back after a tumultuous season last year where he dealt with great personal loss and injury. There is a very good chance with Jones at the helm that both Harris and White finish as top-30 running backs. Harris because of his workload and usage in the red zone looks like a virtual lock. For White, it comes down to how much usage he’s going to get in the passing game. With 13 targets (18 per cent target share) through two games, he’s on pace for 110 targets and if that holds up, he should be a great return on value, especially considering he was way down everyone’s draft board before the season started. The Patriots look like they’re back to being the Patriots we had seen for so many years prior, except for, you know, that Brady character. 8. Is the Vikings duo of receivers now a trio? It’s early in the season, we are all aware of that, but some times, some things happen that make you raise an eyebrow. There was obvious hype surrounding Justin Jefferson after his incredible rookie season and even though plenty of people were down on Adam Thielen, he certainly didn’t become a bad receiver overnight. But nobody expected what we’ve seen out of the third member of what might now be a trio of good receivers. KJ Osborn has been a revelation early on in the season for Minnesota, currently sitting at WR19 with 12 catches, 167 yards and a touchdown on 15 targets (18.5 per cent target share) and has been a great complement to the two great receivers ahead of him. The likelihood of this production is due to the injury of Irv Smith Jr., the lack of talent at the tight end position and Thielen and Jefferson drawing top coverages. Jefferson and Thielen are going to get theirs, but Osborn is worth an add in deeper leagues, especially because we have to think that the Vikings are going to be throwing the ball a lot this season. If Jefferson and Thielen go down with injury, Osborn is an easy WR3 play but could even pay dividends as a high-risk, high-reward flex play with those two in the lineup. 9. Patience is a virtue with Hollywood Brown There’s a very good chance that we overlooked Brown’s finish to last season where he was the WR13 from Week 12-17. Yes, he did have five touchdowns in that span and yes we know that is a fluke stat, but you know what, he’s been a touchdown machine since Week 5 of last year. In that stretch of 14 games he has 10 touchdowns, so he could just be on a hot stretch, but it’s worth noting. Through two games this year, Brown is the WR8 with 182 receiving yards, two touchdowns on 16 targets and looks like he’s becoming a lock for your lineups every week. We know that some receivers take some time to adjust to the NFL game and Brown is probably that guy. It also helps that he’s becoming a focal point of the passing game (28 per cent target share) while rookie Rashod Bateman is on the sidelines and Mark Andrews has scuffled a bit out of the gate (eight catches for 77 yards) because this Ravens team is still going to need to have some success in the passing game to make a run in the AFC. Hollywood has arrived. 10. The Weekly “Mike Tolbert Vulture Awards” Ricky Seals-Jones This is one of those rare occasions where a player vultures a touchdown and it was on a great play. Seals-Jones made the most of his lone catch, going for 19 yards and a touchdown but making a great grab in the corner of the end zone on a pass from Taylor Heinicke. I’m sure Logan Thomas managers were thrilled by this. Andy Janovich The Browns fullback not only vultured a rushing touchdown from both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, but he also outscored Clyde Edwards-Helaire, James Conner, Nyheim Hines and was decimal points behind Jonathan Taylor, Alvin Kamara and Miles Sanders. Janovich’s two carries resulted in zero yards and a touchdown. Can’t make this stuff up. Jauan Jennings Jennings is outscoring Brandon Aiyuk in fantasy scoring just like you all predicted. He had two catches for 17 yards and a score in the Niners win over the Eagles and followed up the San Francisco train of touchdown vultures after they doubled up on the award last week thanks to Trey Lance and Trent Sherfield. Darrell Williams This one was easily my favourite vulture line of the week. Williams was a pre-season sleeper to take away work from Clyde Edwards-Helaire (and even outscored him this week), but you’re not going to get very far with his line of three carries for -2 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 0.7 yards per carry and still outscored the RB1 on his team. I love fantasy football. Read the full article

A/N: Tadaaa! Here it finally is! The first Captain Jack Imagine out of (hopefully) many to come! Enjoy, everyone, aye?
Words: 1990 Warnings: death sentence
The drums pounded in your ears, your heartbeat adjusting to their ill-fated rhythm. It was quite early in the morning. A sunny and promising day, with waves breaking at the shore, gushing against the rocks and wetting the hot sand at the beach and seagulls singing their cawing songs and yet, it was all but a dreadful day.
People were crowding in the court, their daily tasks and duties forgotten as they stared up at the huge wooden construction with only three men standing on it. They were greedy and hungry for blood and death, awaiting with anticipation what made them sinners themselves. You felt disgusted by each and every one of them. Every woman, every man and even every child that had locked eyes with the thick rope that was hanging from a big wooden bar, ready to be slung around somebody’s neck with only one purpose—to kill. To kill and to punish those who had disrespected the crown and refused to conform to its beliefs and laws, to be convicted for the simple wish for freedom.
The man speaking to the crowd was unimportant. He listed his crimes, eliciting devilish smirks from him as he did. Shaking your head, you pushed the onlookers aside. It earned you insults and complaints but you couldn’t care less. You needed to get closer. In time.
In fact, it all happened too fast for you to comprehend what was happening and at the same time, it all seemed to slow down. The hangman approached the wooden lever, ready to steal away the last piece of safety the pirate had all while the drums quickened their fatal rhythm.
You had one try. One shot that if wasted, was gonna be your personal death sentence. Were you really going to do that? Saving a man who you didn’t even know properly? You had read stories about him of course. Stories about a pirate who had managed to escape a deserted island, of a man who had plundered the harbour of Nassau without firing a single shot and a man who had even survived Davy Jones’ locker and returned from the dead. Jack Sparrow, Captain of the Black Pearl.
And now here he was. Standing on the podium right in front of you, looking into nothingness with sad and dark eyes as if this time, he had resigned himself to his inevitable fate already. There was nobody to come, nobody to safe him and nobody to cheat the Grim Reaper this time. He was alone and even if you had never exchanged a word—only heard him sneaking around Port Royal again—you had felt sorry for this brave and incredibly cunning man, hunting nothing more than the true meaning of freedom. Certainly, he had done terrible things too but in the end, he was a man with ambitions and passion.
And it was what impressed you, what gave you the final push to draw your weapon and aim at the thick rope.
Remember. You have one shot.
It all happened in a second. The lever being turned, the wooden board giving away under Jack’s weight. He dropped, helplessly, into thin air and you pulled the trigger, the shot echoing ear-piercingly through the whole court. You hadn’t missed. You had succeeded.
Instantly, guards were alarmed and started searching for the culprit, the people around you screaming and backing off, some of the men attempting to grab ahold of you—something you had already expected. You had to be fast now. Pushing through the crowd once more and knocking over a soldier who was approaching you, you drew your sword and threw it towards Jack, who had, seemingly confused, landed on his arse in the dirt. A shake of his head and a pout was all it took, however, to accept the weapon you were offering him and then, you legged it. Fleeing and escaping, doing what you did every day when obtaining food. Only this time, they wouldn’t just try and chop your hand off. This time, they would want to hang you as well.
You pretended to be a bunny. A dirty bunny, running from the fox, sidestepping to avoid the bullets they were firing at you and trying to irritate them until you climbed over a fence, starting at the harbour. Your heart was beating like a steam hammer, threatening to break through your chest as you ran for your life, all for saving a legendary pirate. On the other hand, there was not much you could lose.
Being born in a filthy alley in the dark and abandoned by your mother when old enough, you had no contact whatsoever with your parents. Your father, of course, you didn’t even know. Every day you had to fight for your survival, stealing, lying and cheating to satisfy the painful growling in your stomach. You had tried to find work at first—unlike you mother so you had sworn once, you would become an honourable person but that hope quickly subsided when you got all but rejected. The blacksmith preferred men to work with. The cook thought you too young to take responsibility. The bartender was a perverted man who wanted you to work for free and the only option that was left was selling your own body and making use of your womanly beauty.
You’d rather die than to sacrifice your dignity and self-respect and prostitute yourself. So you started stealing. An apple here, a few coins there… you had become a sneaky thief, sleeping under bridges, in old shacks or minging stables to keep yourself warm at night. Ergo, there really wasn’t anything you could lose, except maybe your life but certainly, you wouldn’t go down without a fight.
The harbour was in clear sight now, the saving ships pitching and tossing in the water. It seemed like with the wooden landing planks several of them were inviting you to take shelter on their deck, hiding until the danger was over and then maybe to set sail as a stowaway.
You chose the one that looked least like a ship of the Royal Navy and got ready to board it when suddenly, you heard a deep and sloppy voice behind you.
“No! Not good, not this one! On yer left!” Half turning, you glanced at a funnily running Jack Sparrow, who was pointing to… the Erudite. For real now? One of the most appreciated ships of the crown? You opened your mouth to protest but he already stormed past you, the landing plank wobbling and shrieking when he set foot on it and then quickly checkmated the two guards on deck.
Apparently, they were preparing to cast off for some unknown reason but it most certainly came in handy now.
Cursing, you ran after the pirate and bit your lower lip once you reached the deck, joining Jack at the rudder. He had prepared everything that still needed to be prepared so quickly you couldn’t even blink twice before it was all over. You knew nothing about ships but you even you understood that he really was an expert in his trade.
On your right, a loud crash followed by a splatter erupted when wood collided with wood and the landing plank dropped straight into the water, bringing the ocean between you and your persecutors. Several shots surged through the air as they grew smaller in the distance, shouting out orders to get another ship ready to follow you. You would be long gone until then and for now, you felt safe. Well, as safe as you could feel next to a real pirate.
It was like Jack had read your thoughts. Without a warning, he suddenly yanked you towards him, his arm snugging around your waist. He kissed you so roughly and fiercely that you forgot where up and down was, his dark beard scratching your chin.
What in the…? It wasn’t uncomfortable, much to your surprise. He did taste of rum, something you didn’t quite appreciate but oddly, his lips were soft as they pressed against yours and moved so gently you almost closed your eyes with relish. Stop! Focus!
Struggling, you pulled away, having him glare at you with brown puppy eyes and a shit-eating grin plastered on his face.
“And who may you be then, luv? What do I call me saviour?”
“(Y/N). I’m… call me (Y/N).” You mumbled out of breath. There were dozens of more questions and answers unspoken in this very moment, questions that burned and itched on Jack’s tongue but—there was going to be sufficient time for that later, especially because when you had collected your composure again, you started chiding him downrightly.
“Why this bloody ship? Out of all ships in the docks, why this one?!”
“Looked prettier than the others,” he replied with a smirk, shrugging as if it was nothing to worry about at all. You clenched your fists.
“You could have killed us! A-and, and they will be searching for this ship, it’s conspicuous, have you thought of that?”
He grinned again shrewdly, showing off his golden teeth in the process. “It’s take what you can, that’s what pirates are all about, savvy? You should know that, given that you just voluntarily saved one.” He pointed out, his cheeky grin widening when you scoffed. It was like he was proud of you. Now that was what you got for saving the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow. At least he always knew a way out. Well, almost.
“Go fetch me some rum, will you, luv? I guess you’ll be stuck with me for a while now, might as well enjoy it.” He mocked. Still, there was a tender tone in his voice.
Something about his wink that followed had your belly twist in pleasure. You felt yourself swallowing before you blinked frantically and forced your attention back to what was important—making it clear that you were not going to be his personal maid, even if he was the captain. He owed you his life, that was payment enough for that “pretty” ship he had just commandeered himself.
“This is a ship of the Royal Navy, you bugger. There ain’t no rum here.”
Jack’s upper lip twitched with displeasure as he gripped the rudder again, his other hand grabbing the compass he was carrying with him so he could determine the right course. Immediately, you wondered whether it was true. Did it really point to what you desired the most? You would have to find out. Like Jack had said—you were going to be stuck with him for a while. Unless of course he made you walk the plank or you decided to play mermaid and jump into the water in the middle of nowhere. Nothing you were planning on. Hopefully nothing he was planning on either.
“Well, first stop’s Tortuga then. I need to get meself some bloody rum. Almost being hanged really takes its toll on a man.”
Tortuga? Was he serious? What about you? When you had saved him from the Gallows, you hadn’t wanted to become a pirate yourself! Or… maybe you had? Wasn’t saving Jack from his death sentence an act of piracy as well?
Perhaps he would even kiss you again if you stayed with him to sail the seven seas. You were pretty sure not all pirates could kiss like that. Not that you had been kissed often before.
Still, you hesitated. “Tortuga? W-what about me?”
“You’re recruited. Welcome onboard, Miss (Y/N)! Ahead of me and you lies an exciting future!” The grin he gave you this time seemed sincere and honest, having the butterflies go wild in your stomach. You wanted to complain again, really. But somehow… you couldn’t. The stories hadn’t lied. Jack was indeed a charming… and handsome man. Maybe it wasn’t too bad, sailing with him.
Oh bloody hell, this was going to be a hell of a thrilling journey.

Why Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End Is Actually a Masterpiece of Modern Blockbuster Cinema
This is a review written by my friend and fellow filmmaker, @kubrickking. It’s a bit long, since she is a huge fan (and good film critic, imo), but it is definitely worth the read.
Since my sisters and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, we have all shared a sense of undying loyalty to the franchise. As BIG Disneyland people, the ride was a staple in our short lives long before we even understood how the concept could become a movie. Thus, we’ve enjoyed going to the midnight premieres, viewing the ride updates, and gathering pirate merchandise through the years. At this point, however, I think it’s fair to say that while we will see whatever film they release, we consider ourselves more fans of the original trilogy than what has followed with Dead Men Tell No Tales and - what was that fourth one called again?
To that point, this review is going to be biased as shit. I was an impressionable kid when I first saw these films and I will always remember them fondly. That being said, I just rewatched them at the age of twenty and feel my reaction is very similar. I was only fourteen when I saw the fourth film and was able to admit that it was terrible. In addition, know that this is not a reflection on Johnny Depp or any of the recent publicity he has faced. I am, and would hope you are as well, able to separate his work as an actor in this series from the recent revelations about his personal life.
As a side note, I am operating this review under the information given in the films, not the historical accuracy of pirates during this time. I don’t know if pirates regularly helped transport slaves and I acknowledge that the themes related to pirates having duality as both savage criminals and good men shows undeniable moral ambiguity regarding the historical truth. Jack, along with Will, is a romanticized version of a “good” pirate for the sake of a family-friendly protagonist in a story about pirates. And this analysis operates under a full awareness of that fact.
Regardless, one of the things that has always bothered me is the dismissal of the third film subtitled At World’s End. Common criticism of the film labels it as too long, too odd, and too exaggerated with little at stake and even littler sense to it. I do agree that any viewers expecting a simple, enjoyable action flick will be undoubtedly disappointed with the third Pirates offering. However, if you’re the part of the audience that is at all invested in Jack’s dive into the Kraken at the end of Dead Man’s Chest and is smart enough to realize the film is only truly 15 minutes longer than the other two, At World’s End delivers more than you could ever ask for as a conclusive chapter.
While the first film is obviously the most efficient and coherent on both a plot and tonal level, the third film acts as a bridge for cohesiveness between the entire trilogy without shying away from taking risks. And I firmly believe these risks pay off. Unfortunately, a majority of viewers feel it is more madness than brilliance. And to them I say, “It’s remarkable how often those two traits coincide.”
The film begins on such a dark note that it’s easy to see how people get the initial impression that it will not be a “fun ride.” A montage of hangings with a somber pirates hymn that ends with the murder of a child who can’t even reach the noose without a barrel to stand on is quite a way to open a film. And those are the kinds of risks you will see taken throughout the entirety of the movie’s 169 minutes. And I intend to prove to you that they are worth it.
From that first moment onward, you are given a direct association for the villain which up to this film is still underdeveloped and has done the majority of his evil actions off screen. The actions of Lord Cutler Beckett - or the pathetic cousin from another Keira Knightley film: Pride and Prejudice - now have tangibility. He’s no longer just the plot device for the evil Davy Jones, but a bastard in his own right. While Jones did senselessly murder sailors with the Kraken, his actions were motivated by a personal and justified search for Jack. But he never murdered children during a crackdown on pirate conspirators. Beckett’s actions serve as a power play, but also as revenge for Jack's refusal to transport slaves for the East India Trading Company; okay I’ll admit, Beckett’s motivations are still a little glossed over. But the film is juggling so many of the series' villains, anti-heroes, and “bloody pirates” with selfish motivations that a further explanation just isn’t necessary. Let me clarify that. Beckett’s specific personal motivations beyond greed for fucking everything up would simply distract from what we all really care about: Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Fucking Swann.
The film proceeds to build characters and set up future plot efficiently as the setting moves to Singapore, which is not a “random” or “meaningless” choice as some would have you believe. Dialogue from Jack in the first film and during the search for him in the second have previously established Singapore as a hub for a significant band of pirates. Their journey there serves a two-fold purpose of procuring mythological navigational charts that will provide a course to Davy Jones’ Locker as well as a ship and crew to get them there. They do all the pirate-y things like misdirect attention to allow an alternate plan of stealing the charts including a crew below the floorboards ready to provide weaponry and the secondary motivation of enlisting Sao Feng in the meeting of the Bretheren Court. It also gives just a glimpse of the assertion and decisiveness that Elizabeth has carried over from her choice to sacrifice Jack to the Kraken at the end of Dead Man’s Chest.
The number one thing I love about the romance at the center of Pirates is that Elizabeth and Will still have their individual character arcs, motivations, and plot. Even after the revelation that Elizabeth indeed left Jack, they do not immediately fall back into the simple conflicts related to their affections. A confrontation below deck parallels the scene from the first film as secrets and feelings are once again revealed. But instead of making this the focus, they both decide to carry on their journeys making their own choices. In fact, the root of their individual character arcs can be traced back to the first twenty minutes of the first film, Elizabeth’s being a more internal struggle and Will’s a more external one. Elizabeth continuously evaluates her own evolving moral beliefs and desires for her life; does she condone, participate in, and forgive the actions of pirates or does she condemn them. Meanwhile, Will must focus on the familial promise and connection with his pirate father Bootstrap Bill Turner that has been a source of conflict for him since the opening sequence of the series.
Just as it has always been, their love story at the heart of it is pulled apart and put back together by the choices they make and, thus, the people they choose to become. Neither needs the other for fulfillment per say - this is why Will always waits until the last moment to profess his love or insist they marry - but they work better together than they do apart. And that is why their ending is both ironic and essential. Their marriage being officiated by Barbosa in between sword fights with cursed pirates is the only appropriate setting for the unification of the two and one of the best damn scenes.
Call me dumb or sappy, but this romance still feels honest and emotional to me in its restraint. Even though I know it was cooked up in some board room meeting of Hollywood execs, I still genuinely feel invested in it. I think it comes down to the fact that they don’t hit you over the head with it. They allow the female character room to breathe and grow independent from the romance; which is perhaps why you can interpret her ending as either the greatest or worst conclusion to a character arc. Elizabeth’s speech to the crew of the Black Pearl before they enter into battle with the Flying Dutchman gives me chills every time. Because of her heart, dedication, and true duality, she is able to understand and act on the conflict with a decisiveness and purpose that none of the other pirates can. She has allegiance to her beliefs unlike the fickle criminals around her. She fights with and for values and a purpose, enjoying the adventure and adrenaline along the way.
In a similar way, Jack Sparrow’s character is fairly consistent through this film. There is justified criticism about Depp’s performance becoming a parody of the original idea as the series has progressed, and I would agree that it has never been as pure as it was in the first film. However, I don’t feel that Sparrow becomes a full caricature until the fourth film onward and I will tell you why.
Sparrow has always been defined by equal parts wit and luck. The details of his plans or the existence of them at all has always been left up to the interpretation of the audience, with rather blatant characterization from British soldiers about if he “plans it all out or just makes it up as he goes along.” While we can assume he gets lucky a lot and doesn’t always win - i.e. the mutiny that is ingrained in his character’s history - there is obvious intelligence lurking underneath all his actions. He’s persuasive and charming in the way a dirty, murderous pirate shouldn’t and doesn’t need to be. For example, Jack spends most of the second film convincing others that the only way to get what they want is to help him first. He weighs their desires and presents ultimatums, using whatever he has as leverage against them. Jack’s long-winded dialogue scenes where he talks someone around his finger function in the same way that deduction scenes do for Sherlock Holmes.
What makes this most impressive, or the laziest writing ever, is that the people around him are often not unintelligent people. Elizabeth, Barbosa, and Will have all outsmarted Jack on screen by the beginning of the third movie, Elizabeth’s trickery even proving fatal for him. Because of this, Jack’s character is only half what’s written for him. He is also half Depp’s performance, which does not feel strained in the original three films. Some classic Jack Sparrow moments you may have forgotten actually take place in this film include the canon firing springboard onto the pearl with Beckett’s toy figure in the mouth of the barrel, the discovery and following flipping of the ship to return home, and the manipulation of the Bretheren court to approve a vote for pirate king and subsequent battle with Beckett.
Also, if your argument is that Jack became the main character when he should only be a strong supporting character, HE DOESN’T EVEN APPEAR ON SCREEN UNTIL THIRTY-TWO MINUTES INTO THE FILM. He is a supporting character in this movie. That is tremendous restraint considering the major draw for most viewers, which was heavily capitalized upon by Disney, was Depp’s performance as Captain Jack. And when they finally do show him, it is a lengthy eight minute sequence of him arguing with himself, eating peanuts, licking rocks, and rocks becoming crabs that roll the Pearl over sand into an ocean. Not necessarily the audience-catering character re-introduction you’d see in a Marvel film. Jack is in a mythological purgatory or hell that represents the silly and truly odd essence of pirate lore, and the filmmakers honor that. From the moment Jack is back with the crew on the Pearl, his comedic moments hit every time - with the exception of the angel and devil shoulder Jacks. His interactions with everyone from Barbosa to Will to Davy Jones to Beckett are spot on. Jack is witty, wily, and wondrous as ever while twisting the desires of those around him to spare his life time and time again.
But it’s not just the comedic moments this film gets right, it also nails the emotional and dramatic ones. Particularly Will’s final moments after being stabbed by Davy Jones and Jack’s confrontation with the now dead and beached Kraken hit perfectly. Still, my favorite scene of the whole film has to be Elizabeth’s speech which leads the Pearl into battle with the Dutchman. Dialogue from three male characters plays out in the background as the camera circles Elizabeth, in solemn reflection over the release of Calypso and the impending fight. “Then what shall we die for?” she questions Barbosa. Then she continues with the fiercest fifty second monologue, throwing Barbosa’s words back at him and using them in a way he never could to inspire the pirates aboard the Pearl to rise to the occasion and “hoist the colours” - effectively answering the plea of the chain gang in the beginning of the film.
As with many blockbusters, there is a dramatic scene where the audience typically laughs out of turn. So let me be clear: if you even laugh a little bit during Elizabeth’s desperate attempts to bring her ghostly father aboard, you have no heart whatsoever. It is quite obvious to the audience, who has already been told the people in the boats are dead, that Governor Swann is beyond help. However, to the eye of someone who has seen the mythical Kraken devour the living person beside them, it may not seem so impossible that her father can also be saved. As a matter of fact, why couldn’t they save him?? I am still crying during this scene ten years later. Not because I loved his character, but because I can easily imagine my own parent afloat in one of those boats and my own hysterical attempts to reach them. Take a moment, please, and imagine your parent in this position. Not so stupid now, is she??
And this brings me to my favorite thing about the film: the visual language. Working with supernatural fables and period piece restrictions, At World’s End utilizes an array of solid and effective visuals that stimulate on levels of both the studium and the punctum. An Asian pirate ship floats on still water like glass that reflects the starry night into a mirror image, as they travel into a dimension of suspended time and space at the world’s end to retrieve a dead soul from eternal purgatory. Jack Sparrow gazes into his own reflection in the dead eye of the rotting beast that killed him and contemplates the true nature of freedom in relation to immortality. “The world used to be a bigger place,” says Barbosa and Jack responds, “The world’s still the same. There’s just less in it.” The wrath of a scorned lover materializes into a swirling maelstrom that becomes the setting for the separation of another pair of lovers. Jack holds the heart of a monster in his hand, blade at the ready, and hesitates in completing the task for fear that he faces his own future cruelty. These images as well as others in the film elevate interesting and elaborate themes into dynamic expressions of consciousness. Don’t even get me started on the coloring. And you get all those layers with an amazing dose of action and thrills.
Also, the effects in this movie still look great because they are 90% practical. Wait, you mean the series with skeleton and fish pirates has practical effects? Yes, you asshat, CGI was only used to supplement the majority of the special effects you see. While certain settings and the crew of the Dutchman are obviously computer generated, all the scenes involving ship effects were either done with the built-to-scale, fully functioning set pieces or models before receiving any post-production visual effects aid. The scenes underwater were actually shot underwater with all the lead cast and the final twenty-minute storm battle was shot on the ship decks with manufactured torrential rain for 10 weeks straight. Not cool enough yet? They also actually blew up Beckett’s ship and layered the shots of him and the other soldiers on it. That Singapore set they blew up was indoors with at least four feet of water and an entire series of buildings on stilts. And honestly that’s almost nothing compared to the shit they actually did in the second film.
Okay. I think I have to wrap this up now because if I even get started on Hans Zimmer’s score, this could double in word count. If you can’t tell already, I really enjoy this super under-appreciated film and I absolutely adore this series as a whole. It has flaws, it can be stupid at times, and sometimes moments fall flat. But the code for a “good” film is "more what you’d call guidelines than actual rules." I still feel my love for this series has been well-founded and well-intentioned for 14 years strong (nearly 70% of my life). Now if you remember "Pirates 3” as being a dud, I encourage you to rewatch and rediscover the magic within. If you were waiting for the "opportune moment," this is it!

crowd vs. critic // 2016
Here’s the thing: When you’re trying to squeeze in as many reviews as possible before the Oscars, you tend to get a little overwhelmed watching almost 10 movies in a week sometimes and reviewing over half of the 40 new movies you watched in a year in just about 3 months. That means when the Oscars finally arrive, you actually need a break to reflect on the movies you watched and, you know, just to take a break.
So now 2 weeks later, here are my favorites of the year in alphabetical order. Though as fate would have it, my two most favorites landed at the top of each list...
CROWD //
10 Cloverfield Lane // Not be as flashy or expensive as some other box office offerings, but that doesn’t mean it can’t provide an adrenaline rush. It will keep you guessing after the credits roll, and, strangely enough, leave you even more satisfied because of that. The most basic needs of a film are storytelling and character development, and this movie knocks both out of the park. At the risk of overstating it, Winstead and Goodman are giving performances of a lifetime. Alas, I’m still the only one who has used the hashtag #JohnGoodmanForBestSupportingActor on Twitter.
Central Intelligence // I would watch Kevin Hart and Dwayne Johnson reenact the phone book. Not every joke is a winner, but Hart and Johnson are a comedic force to be reckoned with even when they’re given uneven material.
Ghostbusters // I recommend watching the extended cut to clarify some of the plot points that felt rushed in the theatrical version (Trust me—those extra 15 minutes make a difference), but this film did exceptionally well in what it set out to do. It was funny—not just haha funny, but legit LOL funny. (Sorry, is my Millennial showing?) Bona fide stars Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig are as reliable as ever, but Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth are the real show-stoppers here. Their comedy chops deserve infinite screen time, and the whole cast has a chemistry most movies covet. Though the conclusion Hollywood execs will draw from this movie is still TBD, the conversation about sexism in the cinema and online that this movie explored (both on screen and in the news) makes it one of the most important of the year.
Magnificent 7 // Basically a Western Ocean’s Eleven with less polish and a higher body count. The story even culminates in a Danny Ocean-level complicated scheme, though the quasi-cowboys bring a more cavalier flare. This cast is stacked with charm, too. Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, and Ethan Hawke carry the star power, but there’s not a weak link in the crew. All are funny, and all are formidable when the movie needs them to be.
Moana // As consistent and reliable as Dwayne Johnson’s career right now. Newcomer Auli’i Cravalho brings spunk and spirit to our titular heroine, and she and Johnson have a chemistry that suits their characters’ playful rivalry. The slapstick and jokes know when to pause for a soaring power anthem. Moana will definitely make you laugh, but there’s a chance it will make you cry, too.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 // Even bigger, fatter, and Greeker than the original. I laughed the whole way through, and seeing almost the entire original cast back together was a delight. If you’re like me and count My Big Fat Greek Wedding as one of your most favorite comedies of all time, you’ll be pleased with the follow-up.
Passengers // A near-perfect popcorn flick. I mean, it’s Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence—what more could you want? Pratt and Lawrence glow with chemistry, both comedic and dramatic. And though some of Passengers feels familiar, I haven’t seen a movie like this in awhile. A romance at its heart, it also plays with elements of the adventure, disaster, and comedy genres, and it’s capable with all of them. And at under 2 hours, it makes superhero movies seem a little silly for needing 2½ hours each to tell stories that make you feel, laugh, and tense up.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story // Opens with a BAM! in its score, and the action doesn’t stop till the credits. Once director Gareth Edwards’s name popped up on the scene in that blue sans serif on the star-flecked black background, I released a taut breath. That had been a ride, one pushing light speed. Adventures this whiplash-ready are a rare breed, and the ending is unusually satisfying with no loose ends and no post-credits sequence.
X-Men: Apocalypse // Following up the best chapter in a franchise is an unenviable position, but X-Men 7 doesn’t drop the ball. Apocalypse might also be chapter with the most visual flair. It totally embraces the ‘80s setting, with a bright wardrobe (Hello, Ray-Bans!), special effects that echo neon lights (Hello, fuchsia!), and a clever cameo or two (Hello, Ally Sheedy!). And the soundtrack? Totally rad. As far as I’m concerned, if the movies stay this fun, Fox can keep them coming as long as they like.
Zootopia // The magic makers at Disney dreamt up a world as wide and high as Judy's dreams in Zootopia. Judy Hopps is just one part of this amazing world—and I do mean amazing. This universe is visionary and sharp. My reactions to this story were visceral and vocal. My laughs were loud, the surprises were genuine. Mix in spoofs of our world and familiar films, and you have a setting that keeps pulling the emotions out of you.
CRITIC //
Arrival // I left this movie thinking, “I wish I felt this way after every movie.” Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner are predictably excellent, but it’s the script that really wows here. With a creative story structure that pays off 10 times over, its exploration of loss, relationships, and communication is coherent and original. Films like Arrival, with a fresh story and something to say, are the best Hollywood has to offer.
Fences // Though the rich drama of Fences has made the play beloved for over three decades now, not all credit for this film can go to the writing. Denzel Washington and Viola Davis are the living definitions of powerhouses, and here they show their ranges of joy, heartbreak, aching, and vulnerability. The two command their too-many-to-count monologues, transforming theatrics into human drama. Their characters sort through issues of race, class, gender, parenting, marriage, and responsibility that feel just as relevant today as they were in the 1950s.
Hidden Figures // Knows its purpose and knows how to achieve it. It helps that its characters are so well-developed and brought to vigorous life by Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Janelle Monáe. These three ladies are knockouts, making a script with little subtlety feel natural. This film knows it’s more relevant to today than many of us would care to admit and reminds us the blatant racism of the ‘60s didn’t happen that long ago.
Jackie // Not just better than it needed it be—it represents the highest excellence in filmmaking. Drama is scorched into any story starting the assassination of a president. The strength of this film is it doesn’t coast on the momentum of its inciting incident. Jackie doesn’t just concentrate on the instant that changed a woman’s life but meditates on truth, grief, and—most of all—the woman in the middle of it. Death and publicity have tragically met, and only she is the exact point of intersection.
La La Land // Already one of the Great Musicals. I’m not sure the movie had anything new to contribute to the musings on fame and following your dreams, but this classic-meets-modern musical speaks on those subjects so creatively and with such polish, it can’t be ignored. As the opening number was wrapping, I thought, “Even if the rest of this is terrible, this scene will make the whole movie worth it.” That’s how impressive the musical and technical achievements were in just the first few minutes. Better yet, the rest of the movie kept up the momentum to make something truly special.
The Light Between Oceans // Separately, Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander live up to their reputations as strong performers, but the two are even lovelier together. Both are experts in the nuanced glance—a simple flit of the eye or turn of the head can say more than their dialogue. The duo is rivaled by another romantic pairing in this film, though: the score and the cinematography. The film is as every bit emotionally affecting as it means to be.
Lion // Luke Davies earned an Oscar nomination for his adapted screenplay, but so much of this story is told in the directing. Facial expressions, body language, and smart editing help you fill in the gaps. We can go for what feels like minutes without dialogue because director Garth Davis is smart enough to know we’re smart enough to put the pieces together. I want to watch this film again so I can better discuss it are repeated motifs like trains and falling asleep, or the foreshadowing in early scenes that explains later character development.
Love & Friendship // A treat for lovers of Austen and film alike. I’m used to the flawed but noble heroines in Austen novels, but Lady Susan’s qualities more resemble the worst traits of Austen characters: She’s conniving and cruel, and as played by Kate Beckinsale, fabulous. All of the performances are top-notch, and she’s the peak. Every bit sharp, manipulative, and charming as she needs to be, we’re wrapped around her finger. I’d like to give an additional shout-out to Tom Bennett, whose rambling idiocy is a hysterical delight.
Sing Street // Cements John Carney as one of my favorite modern filmmakers. 2014’s Begin Again used music to explore the flux state of the modern music industry, and this film is an opportunity to look at how music gives life in tough circumstances, especially economic ones. We’ve seen plot elements in Sing Street elsewhere, but the final amalgamation here is entirely original.

2018 NFL Mock Draft Round 2
Today we continue on with the 7 round mock draft series for the 2018 NFL Draft.
See Round 1
For those interested, you can see the 2017 7 round mock here, and a Packers only 7 round mock drafts here –>(1, 2).
Something to keep in mind is the fact that this exercise started mid-March so some trades and player rankings will likely change over time but considering a 7 round mock can’t be done with any seriousness in a week, you’ll just have to tolerate a couple errors here and there.
The big board I’m using is from NFLBigBoard.com. It uses an aggregation of several of the top big boards around the web. Also I built it so there’s that.
33 Cleveland Browns Ronald Jones II, RB, USC
As I said, Chubb and Jones are a better option than Barkley and Hubbard and I’m standing by that here.
Darnold, the new franchise QB for the Browns, is also reunited with his RB so that’s kind of cool too.
34 New York Giants D.J. Moore, WR, Maryland
This was a very tough call. There are a lot of players here that could help but none of them felt quite right.
The Giants are likely going to be without Marshall and ODB for 2018 and need to reload at the position and quickly.
If Moore has a chance to be a WR1, the Giants could be okay with Moore, Shepherd, and Engram for receiving weapons.
35 Cleveland Browns Ronnie Harrison, S, Alabama
I wanted to take Harrison two picks ago but wasn’t really sure the role was as well defined as it would be for Jones.
As it stands Damarious Randall is the FS and Jabrill Peppers is the SS. We aren’t really sure how either of those things will turn out but it’s unlikely they will both develope very well in their roles.
Harrison has the ability to play FS as well as SS and could win out one of those jobs starting in 2018.
36 Indianapolis Colts James Daniels, C, Iowa
Castonzo is a good LT, Slauson is now paired with Quenton Nelson, which could be pretty solid depending on Slausons ability to bounce back, and now we have James Daniels to play center in place of Ryan Kelly who can’t seem to get it together.
After 2 rounds the Colts might just need to find a little help at left tackle to have a functioning starting offensive line in 2018.
37 Indianapolis Colts Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M
Our team is Andrew Luck, period. We invested to protect him with offensive line, now we are going to find him some weapons. We really would like to find a RB but Kirk in the slot with TY on the outside? Come on that’s pretty solid work in just 3 picks.
38 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Mike Hughes, CB, UCF
For a minute I thought doubling down on DB’s with Minkah going in round 1 was overkill but to have Hughes and Grimes on the boundary, Hargreaves in the slot and Fitz and Conty at safety? That’s a solid DB group.
Hughes was also a fantastic value here.
39 Chicago Bears Kolton Miller, OT, UCLA
The Bears offensive line isn’t anywhere near as impressive as it was in 2017.
Outside of Leno and Whitehair there isn’t much to be overly excited about. I suppose Long at RG isn’t terrible if you don’t factor in his massive paycheck.
Miller is a 6’9 behemoth that was knocked for a lack of athletic ability but he tested off the charts at the combine.
Either way he should stack up pretty well at RT and be an upgrade over their current tackle.
40 Trade – Detroit Lions Sam Hubbard, EDGE, Ohio State
Lions receive pick 40 Giants (from round 1 trade with Broncos) receive 2nd (51) and 3rd (82)
Hubbard has limitations but is projected to be a real good strong side 4-3 defensive end which is what the Lions need.
Hubbard paired with Ansah could make for 2 very good players on the edge for Detriot.
41 Oakland Raiders Dallas Goedert, TE, SDSU
I’m not a fan of many of the players at the top of my board but Dallas is intriguing. We have Jared Cook but that isn’t as lethal as we had hoped. Beyond that, Cook is 30, we’re paying him $5M, and there is 0 dead cap this year, meaning, if we so chose to, we could cut him and it wouldn’t cost us a dime.
Probably makes more sense to let him play out his last year and coach up Dallas but either way the pick makes sense.
42 TRADE – Green Bay Packers Carlton Davis, CB, Auburn
Packers receive pick 42 Dolphins receive 2nd (45), 5th (172), and 6th (186)
Dolphins didn’t feel comfortable with the top of the board and could use the picks. Davis is at the top of the board so it didn’t take long to find a suitor in GB. The Packers made it easy for the Dolphins offering two picks to move back 3 spots.
Carlton Davis is a big, long, physical corner that dominates receivers in press man coverage.
The Packers defensive backfield now consists of Carlton Davis, Kevin King, and Tramon Williams at corner and HHCD, Derwin James, and Josh Jones at safety. They may not be the top unit in the NFL but try and find a bigger, faster, and more physical group. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
43 New England Patriots Sony Michel, RB, Georgia
James White is a good receiving back but the Patriots could use a Mel Blount type north and south pounder on their roster. Michel fits that mold perfectly.
44 Washington Redskins Harrison Phillips, DT, Stanford
The Raiders snagged Vea 1 spot before the Redskins in the first round but Phillips is a good consolation and fell on our board making him a good value.
It’s not certain whether Phillips can play nose but regardless of his exact position, he’ll be an upgrade somewhere.
45 Miami Dolphins (From Packers RD 2) Mason Rudolph, QB, Oklahoma State
Tannehill isn’t the worst QB in the league but is he ever going to take them to a SB?
The way I see it, the team will be rebuilding for another couple years. Grab Rudolph, let him sit and when the team is ready to go, Tannehill will be in his 30’s and at the end of his contract. We’ll have Rudolph ready to take the new and improved Dolphins to the promise land.
That’s the plan anyway.
46 Cincinnati Bengals James Washington, WR, Oklahoma State
1 pick after his QB gets taken by hte Dolphins, Washington finds a home in Cinci and to be honest, I don’t hate how things are shaking out. We have Cordy Glenn and Clint Boling on the left side of the line and drafted Isaiah Wynn to hold down the RG spot. Joe Mixon is in his sophmore year and we now have James Washington and AJ Green on the outside.
Our defense isn’t horrible but if we can hit a couple more linemen and a few defensive pieces the Bengals might surprise some people.
If nothing else they’ll have the weapons to be one of those terrible teams that blow a few teams out of the water once in a while.
47 Arizona Cardinals Arden Key, EDGE, LSU
Chandler Jones had 17 sacks in 2017. The man is a freak. With that said, the team as a whole had 27.
That’s 17 for Jones, 10 for everyone else combined. That’s actually really pathetic. Jones needs help and although there are concerns with Key, he’s physically gifted and was considered a front runner for number 1 overall in the 2018 draft less than a year ago. The potential is certainly there.
48 Buffalo Bills Mike Gesicki, TE, Penn State
One of the best things you can do for a young QB is give him a safety valve. The Bills get that guy in Mike Gesicki. Mayfield now has Kelvin Benjamin and sophomore Zay Jones on the outside, Shady in the backfield, a young stud TE, and a solid defense. It’s on him to make this team a contender.
49 Indianapolis Colts Nick Chubb, RB, Georgia
Marlon Mack has some potential but the Colts came out and said they want to find a RB compliment for their QB.
With the addition of Quenton Nelson, James Daniels, and now Nick Chubb, Andrew Luck should have a better run game than he’s seen in quite some time (ever?). A couple more defensive pieces and the Colts are quickly going to remind everyone why they were SB favorites not long ago.
50 Dallas Cowboys Orlando Brown, OT, Oklahoma
I’m sticking with my theory that the Cowboys success is dependant on them reviving their glorious offensive line. Smith, Frederick, and Martin still remain but RG and RT aren’t really set.
Cam Flemming isn’t terrible but hasn’t proven to be dominant by any stretch. Brown has terrified people with his stunningly terrible combine but the man was considered the best tackle in the class by a lot of people prior to the combine.
By putting him on the right side they can minimize the impact of his limited athleticism.
51 New York Giants (From Lions RD 2) Justin Reid, S, Stanford
Reid has been top of the board for a while and if he’s able to play FS should be a great fit. He played SS for Stanford but his 4.40 40 time leads me to believe he can manage as a FS.
Either way he should be a massive upgrade over Darian Thompson.
52 Baltimore Ravens Anthony Miller, WR, memphis
Reaching a little bit according to our board but we need some help at WR. We’ve gone out and gotten a ton of veteran help the last few years, and maybe that’ll be fine, but at some point we need some young blood. For that reason we decide to pull the trigger rather than risk losing him by trading back.
53 Los Angeles Chargers Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia
Labeled an edge rusher, Carter is going to be an OLB in our 4-3 defense which is something the Chargers desperately need. Their DL is elite but their linebackers aren’t getting it done.
54 Kansas City Chiefs Donte Jackson, CB, LSU
Kendall Fuller had an unbelievable sophomore season. Assuming he continues to dominate, the Chiefs are still devoid of any talent at corner aside from Fuller.
Jackson is an athletic corner that blazed a 4.32 40 at the combine.
55 Trade – San Francisco 49ers Mark Andrews, TE, Oklahoma
49ers receive pick 55 Panthers receive 2nd (59) and 4th (128)
The Panthers aren’t thrilled with the way the board is stacked up so they make some calls.
Yes, I heard Andrews fell into the 3rd round too but just try to act like the 49ers did something stupid.
Their new stud QB now has Goodwin, Garcon, and Andrews with a promising Trent Taylor in the slot; An underrated RB in Jerrick McKinnon running behind a pretty decent offensive line; and a pretty scary defense that added Roquan Smith yesterday.
56 Buffalo Bills Malik Jefferson, LB, Texas
The Bills added some DL help with Maurice Hurst in round 1 but still have some work to do in the center of the defense and LB might be the biggest need.
Jefferson is a high ceiling player that was at one point thought of as an early 1st round prospect.
He’ll contribute right away.
57 Tennessee Titans Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech
The Titans D line isn’t horrible but the NT spot could be better.
313 pound Austin Johnson is young and can continue to get better but why mess around. Tim Settle is a 335 pound monster that could likely upgrade the position immediately.
58 Atlanta Falcons Rasheem Green, DT, USC
The Falcons need another lineman to play next to Grady Jarrett and where I’m sittin’ there aren’t very many good options currently on the roster. Green is 6’5 275 and is an ideal fit for the team.
59 Carolina Panthers (From 49ers RD 2) Chukwuma Okorafor, OT, Western Michigan
The Panthers grabbed Matt Kalil from the Vikings. I’m not sure the point of this other than his brother being on the team. It certainly can’t have anything to do with actually wanting him to play left tackle. That can’t be…
Let’s just say we draft a left tackle to be safe, eh?
60 Pittsburgh Steelers Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, EDGE, Oklahoma
I’m certainly concerned about Okoronkwo’s size and whether or not he can manage on the strong side but it seems clear the Bud Deupree experiment was a massive failure. They need help opposite Watt and here it is.
61 Jacksonville Jaguars Braden Smith, OG, Auburn
Yes I considered a TE but let’s play it smart. Protecting your QB and helping your star RB, Fournette is far more important than converting a couple third downs.
The Jags got Andrew Norwell and now added one of the top guards in the draft.
Oh and Smith was higher on our board so there’s that.
62 Minnesota Vikings Tyrell Crosby, OT, Oregon
There are never sure things but if everything pans out, the Vikings could have an okay line.
Reiff is serviceable, they drafted Billy Price who can play any guard spot and center (we’ll say LG), Elflein is going into his sophomore year so there is reason for optimism, and now Crosby can hold down the right tackle spot.
This still requires everything to go very well, no injuries, and an additional guard at some point… but they could be okay…
63 Trade – Houston Texans Kerryon Johnson, RB, Auburn
Texans receive pick 63 Patriots receive 3rd (68), 6th (177), and 6th comp (214)
Lamar Miller was expected to explode when he went to the Texans. That wasn’t the case. Miller isn’t very productive at all and can certainly be upgraded or at the very least, replaced this year or the next when the Texans feel ready to move on and free up the cap space.
Johnson, according to the all knowing big board was a fantastic value and fell quite a ways until the Texans could take it no more.
64 Cleveland Browns D.J. Chark, WR, LSU
So let’s break this down. On offense the Browns now have Darnold at QB. Josh Gordon and DJ Chark at WR with Jarvis Landry in the slot. Ronald Jones and Duke Johnson at RB and Njoku at TE.
On defense we have Garrett and Chubb off the edge. Gaines and Carrie at corner with Calhoun in the slot. And we also added Ronnie Harrison at safety.
All this just through 2 rounds. How in the world is this team not in the playoffs in 2018?

Top daily fantasy football plays for Week 3 of the NFL season
With Week 3 of the NFL season upon us, we take a look at some of the best values to be found on DraftKings and FanDuel, and some players worth fading.
SB Nation will be bringing you the top daily fantasy options each week through the regular season and into the playoffs. We have a small sample size of which offenses look good to target and others to avoid until further notice. As for who should be in your lineups, here are the top value plays of the week, with an eye toward low ownership and high upside.
Quarterback
Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons ($6,200 DK, $7,900 FD)
Stafford is as hot as any quarterback in the league, yet he is still priced like a third-tier starter. And facing the Falcons at home should not be a sign that things will slow down anytime soon. This game has shootout written all over it, with Stafford perfectly capable of 300 yards and 3-4 touchdowns. At his price, that is an epic steal.
Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints ($6,600 DK, $8,100 FD)
I believe in the redemptive powers of the Saints defense. I believe Newton, after two sluggish performances, is ready to show off his surgically-repaired arm. I expect Christian McCaffrey will turn at least one short Newton pass into a touchdown. It’s get-well week for Cam.
Kirk Cousins, Washington vs. Oakland Raiders ($6,100 DK, $7,600 FD)
Like Stafford, Cousins is priced low and takes part in a game with shootout potential. That’s about all Cousins and Stafford have in common after two games, but I’m willing to give Cousins the benefit of the doubt here, especially with Rob Kelley potentially out of the lineup, forcing Washington to throw first and throw often.
Trevor Siemian, Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills ($5,500 DK, $7,400 FD)
Until he actually shows that his touchdown explosion the first two weeks is some sort of fluke, I’m totally ok with throwing him into my lineups. The Bills defense has been impressive, but the Broncos offense has it all working, with Siemian the main benefactor.
Discount Darling: DeShone Kizer, Cleveland Browns at Indianapolis Colts ($5,000 DK, $6,900 FD)
Throw last week out the window. Everyone knew Kizer was going to struggle on the road against a brutal Baltimore defense. The Colts are nowhere near as dangerous, especially if Vontae Davis is out again. Kizer should be able to wake up a few echoes this week as a passer and a runner.
Avoid: Drew Brees ($7,200 DK, $8,400 FD)
Brees at home is one of the best fantasy quarterbacks there is. Brees on the road against a good defense is another matter. If this game were at the Superdome, I’d be all set to get on board for the second-highest QB salary on DraftKings. But in Carolina, I can’t justify not paying the extra $100 and going up to Aaron Rodgers. Frankly, if I’m paying up at QB (and I’m not) I would fade both of them and go down to $7,100 and play Matt Ryan.
Also consider: Derek Carr, Oakland; Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers; Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks.
Running back
Kareem Hunt, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers ($8,000 DK, $8,300 FD)
Here’s hoping players on DraftKings see Le’Veon Bell just $800 more – and an unusually cheap $8,800 overall – and also get spooked by the red “No. 1” under opponent’s rank and just stay away, because that Chargers’ stat is super misleading. C.J. Anderson and Jay Ajayi had big games against the Chargers the first two weeks and we know what Hunt is capable of. I love him as a sneaky high-priced play.
Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints ($6,100 DK, $6,800 FD)
I wrote about it in my start/sit article, but the Saints are the worst team in the league at defending pass-catching running backs and McCaffrey is certainly due for a breakout game. His price tag is depressed for the amount of production available to him this week and his ownership should be low after two underwhelming performances.
C.J. Anderson, Denver Broncos at Buffalo Bills ($5,800 DK, $6,900 FD)
Anderson has been one of the top stories of the year at running back, completely ending any mystery over who should be the main back in Denver, something that wasn’t decided when training camp began. Anderson should keep on rolling against a Bills defense that has been better, but hasn’t faced a back as hot as Anderson through two weeks.
Theo Riddick, Detroit Lions vs. Atlanta Falcons ($5,100 DK, $5,600 FD)
Tarik Cohen lit up the Falcons as a pass-catcher in Week 1. Ty Montgomery was almost a carbon copy in Week 2. See a trend here? Riddick should be just as busy in a back-and-forth affair, having posted a big game against the Cardinals in Week 1 when his services were needed. He was quiet against the Giants after his team took a big lead, so hopefully that drives people away. He’s got 20-point upside, maybe more.
Discount Darling: Chris Thompson, Washington vs. Oakland ($4,500 DK, $5,600 FD)
Thompson has already racked up three touchdowns through two games and should see an increased workload against the Raiders if Rob Kelley is unable to play. He should also see an increased workload because this potential shootout is going to call for more passing than handoffs. Thompson is well underpriced for his level of production.
Avoid: LeSean McCoy, Bills ($7,000 DK, $8,100 FD)
If the Broncos can totally remove Ezekiel Elliott from a game even though he’s on a team with a great offensive line and established wide receiver options, what can McCoy do, despite the huge number of touches he’s expected to receive? Most weeks, McCoy’s price would seem fair, but in a matchup that’s as tough as it gets, he’s a bit too rich for tournament blood.
Also consider: Ty Montgomery, Green Bay Packers, Chris Carson, Seattle Seahawks; Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans.
Wide receiver
A.J. Green, Cincinnati Bengals at Green Bay Packers ($8,100 DK, $7,500 FD)
Green has not been anywhere near the player we expected him to be thus far in 2017, and that’s great news this week, as the Bengals finally get a defensive matchup that they can exploit. I believe the shake-up on the coaching staff and the 10-day break will all work together to finally get the Bengals offense moving in the right direction, and Green is more than capable of putting up a big number against a defense that was shredded last week by Atlanta.
Adam Thielen, Minnesota Vikings vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers ($5,700 DK, $6,000 FD)
The Buccaneers are among the league’s worst at stopping slot receivers, and if Sam Bradford is back under center, Thielen is in position to take full advantage. Even with Case Keenum starting last week against the Steelers on the road, Thielen posted a respectable number. Check Bradford’s status, but regardless, Thielen should be a solid play this week.
DeSean Jackson, Buccaneers ($4,600 DK, $6,400 FD)
With Mike Evans expected to draw Xavier Rhodes, this seems like a good week to look to the opposite side of the formation and give the Buccaneers’ newest acquisition a look. For almost 2k less on DraftKings you get a receiver who can burn the Vikings deep while they focus on stopping Evans.
Mohamed Sanu, Atlanta Falcons ($4,500 DK, $5,400 FD)
Along the same lines as DJax, I had some Sanu in my lineups last week and he paid off nicely with 13.7 points on DraftKings. With all the attention paid to Julio Jones, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sanu duplicated that performance this week, which would pay off his salary nicely. He’s a low-owned contrarian play in a game likely to be a shoot out.
Discount Darling: Devin Funchess, Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints ($4,200 DK, $4,800 FD)
Funchess is in a terrific spot to crush his salary against a terrible pass defense in a role that should expand now that Greg Olsen is on the shelf. The potential has always been there for Funchess and this is a great spot for him to realize it.
Avoid: Jordy Nelson, Green Bay Packers vs. Cincinnati Bengals ($7,800 DK, $8,400 FD)
I always hate paying up for guys who spend the week on the injury report. Even if they play, it never seems to work out with the kind of game you need to justify the salary. The Cincinnati offense has been awful, but the defense is strong enough to make me think twice about relying too heavily on the Packers offense, especially the injured players like Nelson and Randall Cobb.
Also consider: Doug Baldwin, Seattle Seahawks; Michael Crabtree, Oakland Raiders; Brandon Coleman, New Orleans Saints.
Tight end
Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers ($6,000 DK, $7,100 FD)
Kelce exploded last week with an 8-103-1 line against the Eagles. The Chargers are among the worst teams in the league at defending the tight end position and Tyreek Hill is likely to draw the Chargers’ best defender, Casey Hayward. The field could be wide open for Kelce to post another monster game.
Zach Ertz, Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Giants ($5,000 DK, $6,500 FD)
Ertz is racking up targets and yards as Carson Wentz’ favorite pass-catcher, and that should continue against a Giants defense that allows big games to tight ends. Ertz gets an even bigger boost if Janoris Jenkins is able to suit up and defend Alshon Jeffery.
Hunter Henry, Chargers ($3,900 DK, $5,500 FD)
Antonio Gates got his milestone touchdown last week, and now the Chargers can get back to focusing on the true talent at tight end. The Chiefs allowed Ertz to go wild last week, so the opportunity is there for Henry to improve on his 7-80 line at a discount price.
Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts vs. Cleveland Browns ($3,600 DK, $5,300 FD)
The Browns remain the gold standard for targeting tight ends and Doyle has been about the only bright spot in the Colts offense through two weeks. He should be plenty active – and perhaps chalky – this week.
Discount Darling: Seth DeValve, Browns ($2,600 DK, $4,500 FD)
No one seems to be paying attention, but DeValve has posted two solid performances in a row, with eight DK points in each game. That’s better than 3X his salary, which makes him an excellent punt.
Avoid: Charles Clay, Buffalo Bills vs. Denver Broncos ($3,400 DK, $5,100 FD)
Also consider: Evan Engram, New York Giants; Eric Ebron, Detroit Lions; Austin Hooper, Atlanta Falcons.
Defense
Miami Dolphins ($3,700 DK, $5,100 FD)
Denver Broncos ($3,600 DK, $5,100 FD)
Philadelphia Eagles ($3,000 DK, $4,500 FD)
Cleveland Browns ($3,000 DK, $4,400 FD)
Carolina Panthers ($2,600 DK, $4,500 FD)

Differing opinions lead us into Week 3
After last night there are certainly reasons to be disgusted. Auburn posted it’s worst offensive performance under Gus Malzahn.
117 total yards.
That’s hard to believe.
What’s even harder to believe is that for awhile, it looked like that performance might actually get the job done because the defense was playing lights out. Auburn held the ball (somehow) for eleven minutes in the first quarter and I was sure in thinking that more of that would get Kam Pettway rolling over the other Tigers in the fourth quarter.
But that eleven minutes of possession somehow turned into eleven sacks of Jarrett Stidham and despite being down by one possession, hope seemed lost even as the offense drove into Clemson territory late in the ball game.
With that said, let’s get the reactions. Both the positive and the negative.
TUCO
Let's take a deep breath. There's plenty of reasons to be upset but Auburn was within a score of the defending national champions on the road. We're unbeaten in league play and will remain so for at least another week. Every goal we entered the season with is still in play.
Stidham was sacked a lot. Our line deserves some of the blame but quite a few of those sacks were coverage sacks. Auburn's receivers need to get open quicker.
It stinks when you go from two sure options at running back to one due to injury and even that one is a little dinged up but this is the world we find ourselves in. Rest everyone as much as possible, and throw your entire route tree at Mercer next week to get ready for SEC play.
How about that Auburn defense? They're going to keep us in games all year.
Two games in, this team reminds me a lot of 2007. That was a good team with some weak spots on the line due to youth. They beat some teams they shouldn't have beaten; they lost some games they shouldn't have lost.
SON OF CROW
If you get sacked 11 times, you should lose. If you can’t protect the passer, you should lose. If you can’t run effective crossing routes on third down, you should lose.
We should have lost. We did.
They were flat better than us up front. Our defense looked amazing. I stayed up until 4:25 in the morning for this nonsense so who is the real idiot? me. I’m the idiot.
JAMES JONES
Play calling wasn't great. Execution was worse. Wasted a good defensive performance. Stidham looked too tentative when he had time, and that was rare. I'd love the All 22 feed for the rewatch.
DUSTY MILLER
Let me first say that I love our defense. I love the effort. I love the swarming, angry, team oriented defense. I love the big hits and wrap up tackling. I hate our DBs not looking back for the ball. But, I love our defense.
With that said, screw moral victories. I saw us using a playcall placard with a picture of the Three Stooges, that pretty much sums up our offense right now.
My highly emotionally charged snap judgements:
I'm tired of the offense looking terrible. I'm tired of it being predictable. I'm tired of zero creativity. I'm tired of no discernible WR routes. I'm tired of the refusal to implement slants and crossing patterns using the middle of the field. I'm tired of aggressive defenses eating us alive because of said refusal and not having plays to take advantage of that aggression. I'm tired of everything going coming undone in the redzone. I'm tired of our OL playing Charmin soft.
I love our defense.
I'm tired of 8-4. I'm tired of our self proclaimed offensive genius crapping the bed. 117 total yards?!?
I love Auburn, I always will. But, I'm tired. Tired of hype not materializing and coming up empty in big games.
DR. Z
Sunday knee jerk: when Brian Griese is openly critiquing your playcallling and scheme, you're in trouble.
JACK CONDON
I watched the first three quarters on my phone (thank you, unlimited data) at a wedding while my wife gave me serious side-eye, and it was both frustrating and rewarding.
Like others have said, the defense was fantastic. They held Clemson to their lowest scoring output in almost three years (and that was a Deshaun Watson-less loss to Georgia Tech). They allowed a couple of big runs by Kelly Bryant, but if the offense had produced more than the worst performance in Gus’ tenure, Auburn would’ve allowed even less than the 285 yards and 14 points that Clemson put up. It was an impressive performance, but it’ll get overshadowed by what happened on the other side of the ball.
I loved watching the defense on my tiny iPhone screen, but I wish ESPN3 had given me the HD picture while Kevin Steele’s unit was on the field. Instead, when Clemson had the ball, I got highly-pixelated scrambled Cinemax quality, and when Auburn’s offense was on the field, it was all crystal clear. If it had been the other way around, I could’ve assumed that some of the issues were due to the poor picture, but it was completely evident. Our offense sucked.
From my tiny viewing platform, I could see Stidham hold the ball way too long. It didn’t even look like the problems were with the offensive line as far as I could see. How many times did Stidham escape the initial pressure, have time to get rid of the ball, and take a sack anyway? Seemed like almost every time to me.
Maybe I missed it, but Kam Martin didn’t seem to be involved in the game plan. After Nate Craig-Myers caught that first third down pass, I thought we were golden. Stidham was going downfield and spreading the ball around. We were going to Kyle Davis, and he was drawing penalties. It looked good.
But then he got gun-shy. How do you help out a quarterback who’s feeling it in the pocket? Short routes, crossing routes, slants, draws, etc. It looked like we ran about five different plays — three-yard run by Pettway, screen, prayer for a PI, sack, and sack.
And the goal line offense. Oh, God. Why. We were inside the ten multiple times in the first quarter. Six points. Never got there again. Clemson knew what we were running. What was with the Chandler Cox toss? Clemson saw it and shifted right where the play was going. Why not give it to Kam Martin in some capacity and give him a shot to outrun a guy to the pylon? So many alternatives.
In the end, we lost to the defending national champions by one score at their place. With that defensive performance, it should’ve been a great road win. But we wasted that effort by Kevin Steele’s boys. We’ll beat Mercer next week, and Missouri doesn’t seem very good. The Mississippis are a mess, and so we might skate through until Baton Rouge.
I said less than eight wins is a fireable offense with this talent, and if that’s the case, then Gus needs to go. But let’s give him the whole season until we come to that conclusion.
As always, #WarEagleAnyway.

Patriots’ Roster: Ranking the best and worst positional groups
Going into the 2017 NFL league year the Patriots’ roster is once again stacked with talent. Furthermore, not only are the Patriots defending champs, they have perhaps the most loaded roster they’ve had under head coach Bill Belichick.
For some teams that may not mean much, but to say this Patriots’ roster is the most talented is telling considering New England has won at least 12 games seven years in a row. They have double-digit wins in 15 of the past 16 years, which also includes a perfect 16-0 regular season.
However even saying that they have the most talented roster in the Belichick and Brady era is no sure thing. The season hasn’t started and there is no guarantee that turns into success. Although it may seem that way considering their unprecedented run. That being said though, this roster has built very strong depth at a number of positions that should allow them to weather injuries should they arise. On the flip side, they also have some positions where they may be tested in the event of some injuries.
AROUND COVER32
Around the NFL: Which five offensive players have the most to prove in 2017
What’s Trending: Eric Mangini hoping to mend relationship with Bill Belichick
2017 Season: Week 1 odds for each game of 2017 NFL season

Player Spotlight: Raiders’ WR, Amari Cooper, speaks up about 2017 expectations
Patriots’ News: Vince Wilfork opens up about Bill Belichick
Patriots’ News: The 2007 Patriots; Part Three: The comeback versus the Colts
Here are the three strongest and weakest positions on the team: *Note: Ranking is 3rd weakest/strongest to weakest/strongest position
Weakest:
3.) Safety:
Starters- Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung
Backups- Duron Harmon, Nate Ebner, Jordan Richards, Brandon King (listed at safety, but more special teams/linebacker) D.J. Killings, Damarius Travis, David Jones, Jason Thompson
Analysis: It may be a case of nitpicking here by picking the safety position. Especially considering their third safety is one of the better deep safeties in the league. However, this roster just doesn’t have many weaknesses. Free safety is a non-issue with this team, but the backup strong safety for Chung leaves a little to be desired. The intention was that Jordan Richards would eventually be able to supplant Chung and take over the starting role, but Richards just hasn’t developed as planned. He is too stiff and slow turning to cover receivers and is too slow to process things.
However other than that this position is fine and should have the necessary depth to withstand some injuries provided Nate Ebner, Richards, or an undrafted free agent can give the coaches some confidence to play them in a pinch.
2.) Linebacker:
Starters- Dont’a Hightower, Rob Ninkovich, and Elandon Roberts
Backups- Shea McClellin, Kyle Van Noy, Jonathan Freeny, Harvey Langi, Brooks Ellis, Trevor Bates
Analysis: Another position that isn’t in terrible shape, but could improve. Hightower is an all-pro caliber linebacker and is a force in the run game and pass rush. Despite that, Ninkovich seemed to show some age last year and Freeny missed most of the year with an injury. On top of that, Van Noy showed some potential but was inconsistent in pass coverage. McClellin was too inconsistent to see heavy snaps despite his athleticism.
One sleeper here is Langi, who was signed to a very high signing bonus and excelled in pass coverage in college. If Langi can supplant Freeny or McClellin as a key piece on defense, the linebacker group gets a lot more diverse with Roberts and Hightower against the run, Langi and Van Noy against pass coverage, and McClellin as a wild card of sorts.
One thing the Patriots could not afford at this position is the loss of Hightower for any extended period of time. He is the only high-level starter they have at this position, and with the lack of elite play at defensive tackle, is incredibly important against the run.
1.) Defensive End:
Starters- Kony Ealy and Trey Flowers
Backups- Geneo Grissom, Derek Rivers, Deatrich Wise
Analysis: Defensive end is usually a position that does more than just rush the passer, which can make this tough to evaluate with the wide variety of tasks they are asked to do. One thing that is clear looking at this depth chart is that the Patriots will be relying heavily on younger players with Wise and Rivers looking like very important depth pieces for the Pats.
Another potential concern is relying on the inconsistent Kony Ealy to play heavy snaps. If he can’t unlock the potential he showed in the Super Bowl a couple years backs for Carolina, the Pats may need to seek help at the deadline or hope one of the two young guys breaks out early.
One last note is that the recently signed Lawrence Guy can shift to defensive end in some cases and may on early downs against the run.
Just missed: Guard
Analysis:
The Patriots drafted two tackles in this draft, leaving just Ted Karras as the only player with any investment or experience in the system on the inside for the Patriots. Karras looked like a solid player, but should Shaq Mason or Joe Thuney go down, this could be a concern for the Patriots.
Strongest:
3.) Cornerback:
Starters- Malcolm Butler and Stephon Gilmore
Backups- Eric Rowe, Justin Coleman, Cyrus Jones, Jonathan Jones, Dwayne Thomas, Will Likely, Kenny Moore
Analysis: One position this team is clearly better than the 2007 team is at cornerback. As a tandem, Malcolm Butler and Stephon Gilmore should be amongst the top duos in the league. Even better, they both have different strengths and physical traits. Gilmore is a bigger corner with elite athletics tools, while Butler is a small corner, but very good reactive athleticism and extremely smart. Throw in Eric Rowe and this group is absolutely loaded.
The only concern here is what will happen at the slot corner position. The leader in the clubhouse is Jonathan Jones, who impressed last year on special teams. Jones clearly showed something as he was the starting slot corner in OTA’s. Jones has blazing speed, though is a little undersized to be an outside corner. If he or Cyrus Jones can become a solid slot corner, this team may have the deepest group of corners in the NFL.
2.) Running Back:
Starters- Mike Gillislee and James White (3rd down back)
Backups- Dion Lewis, Rex Burkhead, D.J. Foster, James Develin, Brandon Bolden, Glenn Gronkowski, LeShun Daniels Jr.
Analysis: Another position that has an embarrassment of riches after the spending spree this offseason. Going into the offseason most thought the Patriots would add a power back regardless if LeGarrette Blount came back. Little did we know Belichick would add Gillislee. A young power guy who should be an immediate upgrade over Blount, Gillislee is a true one-cut back. He hits the hole with devastating power and has the speed to run away from defenders.
On the flip side, Rex Burkhead should be extremely effective out of the backfield giving them another option aside from the recently extended James White that is reliable, smart, and elusive in the open field. Burkhead should see a lot of touches both carrying the ball and as a receiver.
Aside from those three guys, we still haven’t mentioned the abilities of Dion Lewis, the potential of D.J. Foster, the intelligence and special teams’ ability of Brandon Bolden, and the ability of James Develin as the hammer and lead blocker in the power run game.
This team has an unfair advantage at running back and should be nearly impossible to stop.
1.) Wide Receiver:
Starters- Brandin Cooks and Julian Edelman
Backups- Chris Hogan, Danny Amendola, Malcolm Mitchell, Andrew Hawkins, Austin Carr, Devin Lucien, DeAndrew White, Cody Hollister
Analysis: And the deepest position on the Patriots is the receiver position. After trading for stud speedster Brandin Cooks, this team should have every route and facet of the passing game covered. Cooks and Hogan are both speedsters. They should give Brady a deep target to keep safeties honest and preventing them from helping on the seam routes and short passes.
On the short passes, Edelman should be dominant with this cast of options. Amendola and Mitchell should provide excellent insurance options for both the inside and outside guys. Furthermore, Hawkins, Carr, and Hollister represent intriguing developmental options should the Patriots need to stash the latter two on the practice squad.
The depth and ability of this grouping will allow the Patriots to keep rotating guys in-and-out. Keeping players fresh, avoiding injuries, and being able to set up game-by-game plans for each player’s skillset.
Simply put, there is no defense to stop the diverse and impressive skill sets the group possesses.
Just missed: Quarterback
Analysis: Perhaps the best grouping in the NFL, the Patriots have an interesting quarterback room. This room consists of the greatest quarterback to ever play; A young up-and-coming and highly talented player; And a developmental prospect with solid toughness and good natural ability.
No other team can match the Patriots ability as a team that has a hall of fame level starter, a young guy ready to go as a backup, and a prospect for the future to develop.
Once again the Patriots’ roster is insanely loaded, and yes it is unfair to the competition. Even at the backup quarterback spots.

Just announced that he said, and then there was absolutely no evidence that candidly you couldn't remotely All those wretched quarrels, in order to suppress the the Trump U case but the music of the great state of Pennsylvania-he cannot win the election when she says I want new plants to be our president-really big crowd, great timing as all know. Ted Cruz has been an inmate of his tether after having diddled Davy Jones, who has been killing our country. The United States. Funny, very, very much forward to our democracy works.
I have interests in properties all over the country in order to suppress the the Trump. It has been divided, angry and untrusting.

I can't look at the Republican Party. Golden Globes 2017 Red Carpet Review
I’ll admit up front that I watched very little of the red carpet as I had Henry to contend with and a terrible cold (and hungover husband from a quick trip to Chicago this weekend to celebrate some friends). So I did not see some of these on camera and may have missed some, but from what I did see and the photos this morning I can say this. NOT IMPRESSED. There wasn’t a single look that had me wowed. No clear winner for best dressed for sure. But some that I did like a lot, and lots that I did not.
Overall, I have to say that Lily Collins looked gorgeous– even though the dress independent of her was not my favorite (too frilly, too much detail), it looked INSANE on her. The top (front and back) is gorgeous and the unexpected red lip and big bun was working for her. It was interesting, and I like interesting.
Similarly, I LOVED this dress on Emma- it’s whimsical star print and cut were so very “her”… but I did not like the necklace or hair. But overall, she looked really lovely.
Reece’s dress was a favorite, especially with the necklace, but something was up with her hair no? Yellow was HUGE trend on the red carpet, and I think Reese did it best. Naomi Harris killed it in this textured gold column gown. I don’t think a dress has ever fit someone so perfectly!
Zazie Beets’ black dress was super interesting, flattering and unique. Again, not a big fan of the necklaces, but I dig her unique style. Kristen Bell looks so glam in this beautiful sequined gown, but the hair was too Dynasty! A the super low cut front was another repeated trend, and I think her dress was the best version of that.
Gillian Anderson looks perfectly ethereal and pretty and Priyanka Chopra could have done with a little more room in the bust (it went a little Sophia Vergara for me), but her overall look was really lovely with the loose hair and dark lip against the glam, gold dress.
I liked Mandy Moore but didn’t LOVE. The cape bothered me. But I love the dress itself- the color, cut and flow looked really great on her, as do the earrings!
Two dresses that i liked because they ere different- Drew’s funky fan sleeve number and Louise Roe’s beautiful embroidered gown with batwing sleeves.
I actually liked Busy Phillips whole look more than Michelle Williams, but I just think Michelle is so stunning. I wish her dress didn’t have those little sleeve things.
These next two looks with bold are polarizing, but I find them architectural and pretty interesting. Catriona Balfe’s navy and orange dress looks fantastic on her, but may have been a disaster on anyone else. So different, but still pretty! Natalie Portman’s Prada gown is dividing fashion critics- I’m middle of the road- I love the appropriate homage to Jackie O. The color is fab as is the detail work, but overall I think the hair made it look a bit too matronly.
Suits were a big trend, seen of a few women. I Like Katherine Hahn’s look but wish the bra had been a bustier and there had been big earrings. I like the suit look when mixed with ultra feminine accessories.
Two bold color looks made pretty by keeping the silhouettes simple- Angela Bassett and Viola Davis (although I wish this yellow were turned down just a notch)
Is Winona a vampire? Because that woman has not aged in DECADES, y’all! She looks exactly the same as she did in the 90’s. I thought this was simple, appropriate and very her. You know Winona ain’t rolling in in pink sequins. EVER.
Okay- we’re getting to the good stuff now. I barely recognized Kristen Wiig! This dress would have KILLED it without the huge sleeves and with a full length beige liner. I am so over the sheer skirts! DONE, I tell you! Amy Adams looked perfectly pretty but so stiff. The straight hair with the structured column dress and straight earrings… not my favorite.
Really did not like this dress on Jessica Chastain. The fit up top is ALL wrong. And the haro too severe. As for Brie Larson, I’ve never felt her look has been right. Always off just so and a little 80’s. This fell flat for me.
This may be the first time I’ve put Blake Lively in the “NO” category. So do not like this dress- the huge pockets and trim that was like, upholstered and padded? Also, never wear a dress you have to pose a specific way in as she is here.
Form the “Way Too Much” files. Both these looks were yikes.
Another first for me putting Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a negative. She looked blah- the dress was not flattering and her her looked very flat. As for Tracee Ross-Ellis– hated the awkward length of this dress, which really seemed more like a cage! She could barely move!
Jessica and Justin were adorable together on the red carpet interviews, but I did not like the dress– the front opening was a bit too low and wide and it seemed to have padded hips (a look I’ll never understand). She herself looked amazing (those arms), maybe a touch too thin though (could have been the dress)
Two of my LEAST favorite looks (what was with all the open shoulder sleeves???) SJP in one of her worst ever (sorry SJP, I love you, but not this look) and Nicole Kidman whose face looked frozen and filled within an inch of her life! And the dress was bizarre- way better without the sleeves!
I’ll move into those whom I would have dressed in specific other things and the worst of the worst.
Hailee Steinfeld looks pretty, but this dress would have been SO much better 1) in another color (navy/black or emerald?) and 2) again, without those damn sleeves! Also not a hage fan of the boob area. For a similarly ethereal look I would have loved this Jenny Peckham dress!
Zoe Saldana’s super ruffly, super pink dress was just too much of a look. I would have have put her in something like this– the green color with her skintone would have been bananas good!
Kerry Washington’s dress was head scratching with the bad length, broaches and shoulder shields? I would have loved to see her in this graphic print Herrera gown with a bright red/orange lip.
Sienna Miller looked like she got ready in five minutes- the hair was messy, the dress cutouts a bit odd and the accessories really made no sense. For a white, sweet ladylike look I would have preferred this Monique Lhuillier!
Kerri Russel shows how to do leopard the wrong way– and that choker is trying too hard. I’d love to see her in something super simple like this Gabriela Hearts gown with a crazy funky, jeweled long pendant necklace.
Oh Claire Foy! The Queen! What in the fresh 1988 prom is this? Who tied that sash around her waist too? Noooooooo. For some pink with sparkle I would have preferred this Monique Lhuillier!
I can’t with this dress Carrie. I have no words. For a bold look that doesn;t remind you of a Georgia O’Keefe painting, I’d recommend this gorgeous blue floral dress paired with a simple updo and big diamond studs.
Olivia Culp is such a nice girl (I met her when she modeled for us at Two Penny Blue way before she was Miss Universe) but this look is waaaaaaaay over the top. The eye makeup, the dress, the hair– so severe. For an equally moddy look I would have loved this high necked sequin number.
WORST DRESSED WINNER: Felicity Jones! Whaaaaaaat is this???? For something with sheer fabric and whimsy, this Elie Saab would have been SO much better!
Who were your picks????

New Post has been published on https://www.packernet.com/blog/2017/08/21/analyzing-packers-53-man-roster/
Analyzing the Packers 53 man roster
It’s no easy task trying to figure out which of the 90 players currently on the Packers roster will make the 53 man roster. Clearly all 90 are with the team because McCarthy believes they have the ability to contribute. The question then becomes who of these capable players gets 1 of the 10 available practice squad slots and which of the remaining 27 will be cut.
Quarterback: Available slots: 1-4 Lock: Rodgers, Hundley Bubble: Hill, Callahan
The battle behind Aaron Rodgers has been a fun one to watch. Brett Hundley for a while was the least impressive of the three but was able to find his rhythm against the Redskins on a beautiful touchdown drive.
Regardless, 5th round pick Brett Hundley is locked in as the backup to Rodgers and the only real questions are, will the Packers keep more, how many, and who. The general consensus is 3 but there is a good argument to be made for just keeping 2 on the active roster. In my opinion, having done a 53, my vote is to keep 2.
In terms of the fight for 3rd place, it’s a neck and neck race but it’s hard not to be in awe of what Taysom Hill has done. Although I love the rugged Brett Favre style play of Callahan, if I had a vote, we would be keeping the 27 year old Hill.
Running Back Available Slots: 2-4 Lock: Montgomery, Williams Bubble 1: Jones, Mays Bubble 2: Phillips, Stanback
There have been some rumblings about whether or not Montgomery will remain the starter or if Williams will overtake him at some point this year. Ultimately that’s irrelevant to the conversation but I want to go on record as saying that Montgomery will remain the starter and will impress a lot of people.
With that out of the way, for me the question is a little more about how many than who. I believe Aaron Jones is the number 3 back and Mays is the number 4. Behind them I tend to think Philips is the number 5 but that’s just based on playing time. Either way I don’t think Phillips or Stanback will make the active roster.
The question for me is really do they keep 3 running backs with Jones or 4 with Jones and Mays. On my 53 I have them keeping 4 running backs but that’s certainly up for debate.
Wide Receiver Available Slots: 4-8 Lock: Nelson, Adams, Cobb Bubble 1: Allison, Davis Janis, Yancey, McCaffrey Bubble 2: Dupre, Clark, Pearson, Crockett
If there is one thing that can cause a fight among an otherwise cordial fanbase it would be to mention your own personal cut list for Packers receivers. It’s the reason I went with 2 tiers and honestly, I could have probably done 5 or 6 tears and still upset some people.
Overall the big three are still the big three. I know some are trying to push Cobb off and others think Allison should be considered a lock (and he probably is), while some have already written Janis off, but I wanted to leave the tent as wide open as possible. Hence the 8 potential receiver slots.
The second tier are largely the people that are talked about regularly as being sure things. It’s unlikely all of them will make the roster but with all of them, it’s hard to argue against them. Personally I would rank them as Allison, Janis, Yancey/Davis, and McCaffrey.
Davis is seen by plenty as a lock but as much talk as there is about Janis being “just a gunner” (false), I rarely hear anyone mention Davis is just a punt returner. If he fumbles another one and loses that job I’m of the opinion he doesn’t make the cut. For that reason I couldn’t decide if I prefer Yancey or Davis.
McCaffrey has been a phenom and everyone including me loves him but something about it feels forced. He’s the kind of guy that makes plays but the Packers decide he isn’t quite ready and stash him. We shall see.
As for tier 3, the injury to Dupre more or less erased his chances for a roster spot this year, although practice squad is a near certainty in my mind. Pearson was a stud in camp prior to his injury and it wouldn’t surprise me if he also was retained. Clark has built up a pretty large fanbase but I’m not sure how I feel about him taking a spot on the practice squad. He has a lot of size but we already have big tight ends that can do what he does. Crockett is a guy I was rooting for. With his alleged 4.25 speed I was really hoping to see more from him. There is still time and it would be great if he got a shot on special teams but at this point he’s likely a cut.
Offensive Line Available Slots: 6-10 Lock: Bakhtiari, Taylor, Linsley, Evans, Bulaga Bubble 1: Spriggs, Amichia, Barclay, McCray, Murphy Bubble 2: Pankey, Evans, Patrick, Gray, Leff
In this instance, bubble 1 and 2 really just help split up the 10 backups. I used the 1st and 2nd string as it appears on the roster. That said, it probably isn’t far off from reality. Spriggs and Amichia were draft picks which will make it hard to cut them, especially Spriggs who the Packers traded up to acquire in the 2nd round. Barclay isn’t a fan favorite but he’s the only somewhat capable veteran on the team, and Murphy received a little praise after week 2 from pro football focus.
Still, at this point it’s completely up in the air. The backups, as best as I can tell, have been terrible and haven’t proven to be able to handle much of anything. As far as how many the Packers will keep, that too is up in the air. Last year the Packers kept 3 backups so I suppose we can roll with that.
Tight End Available Slots: 3-5 Lock: Bennett, Kendricks, Rodgers Bubble: Peck, Byrd
Although anything is possible, I’m fairly confident in the fact the the Packers will run with Bennett, Kendricks, and Rodgers. Byrd’s name has come across my phone a few times with highlights but he’s up against some stiff odds. It’s always possible the Packers add more than three but I wouldn’t count on it.
Full Back Available Slots: 1-2 Lock: None Bubble: Ripkowski, Kerridge
This one is tricky. Last year the Packers went with 2 running backs but with the depth at running back in 2017, especially with guys like Mays that are built like rocks, the need to keep 2 full backs has been diminished.
Although Ripkowski seems to be the obvious answer, Kerridge has been the more impressive of the two so far this year. It would be unfortunate to not have Rip on the 53 this year but I wouldn’t rule it out as an option.
Defensive Line Available Slots: 6-8 Lock: Daniels, Clark, Lowry, Adams Bubble 1: Francois, Ringo Bubble 2: Price, Heurtlelou, Lunsford,
Daniels, Clark, and Lowry are locks among locks. Adams being a third round pick isn’t going anywhere. Francois I can’t imagine leaving since he was a free agent acquisition with a decent track record but I’m slightly less than 100% sure he’ll make it so I threw him on a tier with Ringo who I would say is further down the list but still very likely to make the team.
The real question would be, can Price or Lunsford fight overtake a Bubble 1 player and how many lineman will the Packers put on the 53. For my money I would lean toward 6, possibly 7 with Lunsford the odd man out. Last year the Packers went with 7.
Heurtlelou was signed by the Packers to round out the 90 just as I was about to post this. No information on him yet but let’s say he’s a long shot.
Outside Linebacker Available Slots: 5-7 Lock: Matthews, Perry, Elliot, Biegel Bubble 1: Fackrell Bubble 2: Gilbert, Talley, Calvin, Letuligasenoa
I think Matthews, Perry, Elliot, Biegel, and Fackrell is a reasonable assumption. It’s a good number filled with familiar talent and a draft pick. Still there are questions.
First, Fackrell has gotten absolutely hammered since day one about how poor his play has been. Mostly from the Packers media but even the coaches have made a few comments about his lack of aggression and overly cerebral nature. He’ll likely be on the team but at some point he has to win the job.
The guys behind him have a tough road. A lot of competition and somewhere between slim and none roster spots. Outside of Gilbert I haven’t heard much. Hopefully some of these guys step up over the next few weeks because the Packers could use a fresh young talent at OLB.
Inside Linebacker Available Slots: 2-4 Lock: Ryan, Martinez Bubble 1: Thomas, Tripp Bubble 2: Heiman, Mathews
Conventional wisdom tells us the Packers will keep 3 and it will be Ryan, Martinez, and Thomas again. I’d say that’s most likely but isn’t a sure thing. First, I can’t really wrap my head around the Joe Thomas thing. I used to be a big fan but that was mostly because he was such a hard hitter. Unfortunately for him, the Packers have at least 1 safety that is a better inside lineback (Burnett) and might have just drafter a second in Josh Jones.
Overall, with all the overlap at inside lineback with both safeties and outside linebackers able to play the position, the inside linebacker position is, in and of itself, fighting for a spot on the roster. I really don’t see a huge need for more than 2.
In terms of why Tripp is on the bubble 1 spot, he not only is listed as second string, he’s allegedly a fantastic special teams player.
Cornerback Available Slots: 5-8 Lock: King, Rollins, Randall, House Bubble 1: Gunter, Hawkins, Pipkins Bubble 2: Goodson, Brown, Pringle, Holmes
King and Randall are 1st round picks, Rollins has been lights out so far in 2017, and House is a returning free agent signing. I think it’s safe to say, barring injury, all 4 are locked in.
Gunter is thought to be a lock and has actually graded out really well on pro football focus, to my complete shock, but from what I’ve seen, Gunter has been the most consistent poor performer so far this year. Depending which of those two opposites the Packers see will determine his place on the roster.
Hawkins was on the roster last year and has been probably the best corner since the start of preseason. He’s on the verge of being a lock already. Pipkins has also made quite a name for himself.
As for the bottom 4, I haven’t heard very much and wouldn’t expect any to make the 53.
Safety Available Slots: 4-6 Lock: Clinton-Dix, Burnett, Jones Bubble 1: Brice, Evans Bubble 2: Whitehead, Taylor
Last year the Packers played with 6 safeties. I don’t expect them to expand on that. I would, however be surprised if Brice was cut and Evans is nearly a lock at this point. I suppose the question is, if they roll with 4, will it be Brice or Evans. If the Packers bring on 6, will it be Whitehead or Taylor.
Otherwise it’s pretty cut and dried.
Special Teams Available Slots: 3 Lock: Vogul, Crosby Bubble 1: Goode Bubble 2: Hart
This, in the eyes of most, is a done deal. The one outstanding issue is at long snapper. Goode was brought back in after there was an issue on family night with the field goal operations. Things have been smooth ever since. There aren’t a ton of situations where I see hart winning the job but he’s on the team for a reason. We shall see.
