The comments section of this video (an uncredited play of Popcorn by Gershon Kingsley on vinyl from 1969) is wild. One part relief that this song is real, one part surprise at how old it is, and one part completely bonkers anecdotes from people's childhoods.

This was basically a song to sell synthesizers and I can't help but think it did an incredibly good job!

Early electronic music's ignored. Yes, we tend to forget about the musicians in this idiom these days. I agree, some tend to be like Kraftwerk, because they continue to have their place in our mentions, yet what about – I usually dislike the latter phrase, but I shall let this slide – Gershon Kingsley? He remains one of the pioneers that doesn't get mentioned that often. Sure, his most famous composition gets covered over and over again, but some of his albums that made the electronica prominent seem to get lost in the usual discussions on the history of the genre. Then again, he resembled his cohort / duo partner Jean-Jacques Perrey in a way, i.e. his machine tunes were more or less seen as a collection of gimmicks despite them showing what these soundscapes can do.

“Popcorn song goes metal” - Charlie Parra del Riego
- original song by Gershon Kingsley, covered by Hot Butter, wiki article
As is my usual, I love cover songs, especially when they change the genre of a tune. “Popcorn” is a good tune for this style of guitar playing, too.

So sometime in the past year I learned the "Popcorn" we all know and love by Hot Butter was a cover, and the original "Pop Corn" had been done five years earlier by Gershon Kingsley. I did a Zepeto video of it. (My husband hates this version.)

The 60's get mentioned as the revolutionary period, but some incredible musical turns do not end up being discussed despite them being present there. For instance, electronic music also fits the narrative of the 60's, yet you may ask yourself – who was doing that then? Yes, this is another case of how we forget Gershon Kinsgley despite him being one of the two persons to thank for all that followed in the genre. True, he may have only been a pioneer in the sense of bringing these sounds packaged in the contemporary pop context, yet where would Kraftwerk be without him? However, the fact his solo debut contained too many covers – they served as a buffer zone – might be a reason for his reputation, since his originals paved the way for the future.

I think a lot of us could use some joy, but I thought maybe we could class it up a little. So: Liona Boyd playing....Popcorn.
