Famous Anita Pallenberg photos by Guido Mangold

German photgrapher Guido Mangold shot a series of well-known photos of Antia Pallenberg. Some of them were first published in the German magazine "twen" in July 1967 (the magazine, long deceased, is still known in design circles for its high-class photography and artwork).

One photo was used as cover for the Simon Welles Anita book of 2020.

Christmas in the Trenches

"every time I played there was this little bevy of very old, and we're talking old, German men, who'd come across the border and showed up at my shows and they usually came in late, came trottin' up the aisle and there usually wasn't a seat left, so they just stood there at the edge of the stage and watched me, without expression, turned around and left when I was done. The last set and I'm watching these guys turn around to leave as I finish my last song and I'm thinkin', who are these guys?

So I set down my autoharp or whatever I was playing, jumped off the edge of the stage and ran up the aisle and caught the last guy. I said you guys have been really sweet showing up all these places but... what's the deal?

And the guy says, we're here because of that song. I said what song? You know, that song, the one that's on the radio. That's how we heard about you and about this festival. Because all our lives our family, our friends have told us we were crazy, couldn't possibly have happened to us. But then we heard your song on the radio and we said, see, see, 'cause we were there."

My name is Francis Tolliver. I come from Liverpool Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here I fought for King and country I love dear It was Christmas in the trenches where the frost so bitter hung The frozen field of France were still, no Christmas song was sung Our families back in England were toasting us that day Their brave and glorious lads so far away I was lyin' with my mess-mates on the cold and rocky ground When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound Says I "Now listen up me boys", each soldier strained to hear As one young German voice sang out so clear "He's singin' bloddy well you know", my partner says to me Soon one by one each German voice joined in in harmony The cannons rested silent. "Tis 'Silent Night'" says I And in two toungues one song filled up that sky "There's someone commin' towards us" the front-line sentry cried All sights were fixed on one lone figure trudging from their side His truce flag, like a Christmas star, shone on that plain so bright As he bravely strode, unarmed, into the night Then one by one on either side walked into no-mans-land With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand We shared some secret brandy and wished each other well And in a flare-lit soccer game we gave 'em hell We traded chocolates, cigarettes and photgraphs from home These sons and fathers far away from families of their own Young Sanders played his squeeze box and they had a violin This curious and unlikely band of men Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more With sad farewells we each began to settle back to war But the question haunted every heart that lived that wonderous night "whose family have I fixed within my sights?" Some of my books about Fritz Lang

A novel by a French writer about Fritz Lang's last days in Berlin before his emigration in 1933: the mixture of fact and fiction has an ambivalent effect on me. The most beautiful part of the book is a fictious but very touching love letter dedicated to Gerda Maurus written by Fritz Lang to win her back.

A small but informative paperback biography for novices but often biased and not very friendly, containes some photgraphs.

The paperback by Ludwig Maibohm - who knew Fritz Lang personally - is a very enjoyable read and contains numerous photographs.

The hardcover biography by Norbert Grob was rightly critically acclaimed. It's the first comprehensive German biography about Germany's most famous director and describes him in all his greatness and with all his weaknesses. It is highly recommended by me.

The heavy-weighted illustrated book about Fritz Lang contains more than 500 pages full of wonderful photos. It is written in three languages (German, English and French) and is a magnificent homage to honour him.

Week 3: Graphics Design Documentary

Mechanical Type is born:

Movable Type: Hot metal

Johannes Gutenberg wanted to print bibles mechanically that looked like it was written by hand so he could charge more. 

Movable type gave ability to set different fonts, sizes

This printing type by Gutenberg remained unchanged for 4 centuries until 1886 

Linotype: Hot metal

July 3rd Otmar Morgenthau, German immigrant, invented Lintotype regarded as one of the 10 greatest inventions.

pipeces of brass punched with alphabets are brought together into a line automaticalled spaced

used to print lots of newpapers and books

very tedious and time consiming - when press ran whole building shook, bring a layout sketched by hand put page together on the turtle

from editorial POV graphics productions such as photographs - had to get engraving

printing presses no grey - gotta get grey by using small dots of black - using patterns

photographs and graphics weren’t used a lot because it was expensive and time consuming

photo typesetting took over as they attempted to move away from the union, photo type setting was seen as a way around that 

combine that with the movement to offset lithography - rrevelation 

newspaper inductry moved onto tape operation - produce coded tapes runn it through linotype machines

inecpensive, automatic, high speed, accurate

From Metal to Light:

discovered in 1920 but didnt come into use until 1950 because of the union 

based upon the mechanism of the hot metal machine

Dr. Agatstan said if you use a camera thats fast enough you can photgraph something thats moving as if it was still - hence we could have a font that was moving if there was fast enough light it would go through the character and then exposed photo matierial

Louis, Rene Goni invented the photogrpahic typesetter whihch in 1949 is introduced as the Photo Machine - composed first book: The Wonderful World of Insects

In hot metal days it was a elaborate and complex process bringng a tight face to market

hisotyrof typeface is connected to technology - means of procution, means of proessMonotype abd linotye both came out in era ito increase speed, and scale

partiular print and coour of text was produced with fonts for hot metal and had to be replicated when companies pivoted to phototype - ha dto understand what it meant to lead pressed down onto surface compared light passing through film 

have to have photographic masters

every character had to be negative so you had to roatet them

they were discs, segments strips, plastic, glass, film reason was how they got around the patent they were all neagtive

phototype setting brought mor women into workplace than any other workplaces

Someone known as magic knives, two different letters in different orders, swap them around cut them out with exacto knives and tape it back down

Paste-Up

t-squares, technical pens, rulers, paste-up boards

stripppinh was a term aplied to burleque, it can also be used to desribe the trimming and positiong of a final negatyive or flat

send all original artwork, photographs, illustration and then go to printer who would have the images shot and stripped into the negative - upto th printer and stripper to do all that

when you have yellow, cyan, black, blue and you combien them together toy get colour

once you have the film you uput it on th emtal and onto alloy with chemical on it and from that you print

they ould send back a blueprint, blue and white - like a draft

Electric Typewriter:

everything is done in the typewriter

1968, IBM came out with composer - version of their selctric typewriter with the type element ball that coudl ujustify - however very few typefaces

had to keep pace with type releases - 16 different types of types to purchase 

huge typebreak from all over the world

60s, 70s associated with design suhc as music, fashion

litroset typefaces were great typefaces - anyone could use it to who wasn’t familiar with typefaces (amatuear product)

this was great for democritisation- only way to do it was through letrosets

photographic typositior made it possible to overlap typefaces - 60s and 70s made it possible, this was bc they coudl see ll the letters wehreas befcore they could not so many errors were made

Hot metal was an old method and now computurisation and automation was emerging 

Design in Digital Age

macintoshes emerged, computers

first peope who got into tgrphics on digital wre not grpahic designers/artists it was computer people

co-creating, thinking with the new technology

The apple macintosh was a controversy - at on your drawing board to technology, digital

letters were pixelated and this was hard to accept it, but some loved the pixelated look

print quality was not up to photo-setting

print through the macintosh, cut it out, lay it out

it was the middle period of introducing digital tools but production methods were still analogue

transitional period - some digital and some analogue

adobe had a prototype that was a laser writer that could meet needs of the quality of grpahics world

you canc ompose everything on one screen and come outu as one 

plate setters were born and computer to plate was CETP came about

photo typesetting to image setting to plate setting and now digital printing
