Aquele espaço de restauração tem, desde há alguns tempos, uma nova gerência privada. Esse local tem sido dinamizado com eventos musicais pela nova equipa numa programação própria.

Na passada noite de sexta-feira dia 25 de novembro foi a vez de lá voltar para assistir ao concerto dos Porridge Radio, concerto promovido pela ‘A Oficina’ a gestora do centro cultural vimaranense em colaboração com a nova gerência do Café Concerto.

Por apenas 5€ foi possível adquirir ingresso. Uma pechincha para ver uma das mais recentes e excitantes bandas do indie rock britânico. Como evidente, também dada à lotação limitada, os bilhetes esgotaram facilmente e com alguma antecipação.

Dana Margolin (voz e guitarra), Sam Yardley (bateria), Georgie Stott (teclados) e Maddie Ryall (baixo) são os 4 jovens britânicos de Brighton que formam os Porridge Radio e que tão boa conta de si têm dado desde que surgiram. Sobretudo desde 2019, ano em que assinaram contrato com a Secretly Canadian. Foi já com a chancela desta editora norte-americana que lançaram ‘Every Bad’ em 2020. Um álbum merecedor de críticas muito positivas pela imprensa especializada e que teve, inclusive, direito a ser nomeado nos Mercury Prize desse ano.

Porridge Radio no Café Concerto do CCVF [mais fotos clicar aqui] Já no decurso deste 2022 lançaram ‘Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder to the Sky’. Foram os temas destes dois álbuns que os trouxeram a Guimarães.

A estreia em nome próprio aconteceu em Guimarães porém a estreia em Portugal aconteceu no Vodafone Paredes de Coura no passado mês de agosto. Assisti a esse concerto tendo sido um debute nacional bastante auspicioso. Nesse concerto ao final da tarde no palco secundário daquele festival do alto Minho fiquei com bastante bom feeling e definitivamente fã. Agora na passada noite de sexta-feira em Guimarães, ao segundo concerto em solo luso, a história foi outra. Passamos do verão para uma noite fria de outono, passamos de um local ao ar livre num palco privilegiado para uma espécie de pequeno clube noturno com audiência bem menor, pois claro. São enormes as diferenças entre os dois concertos. Ponto idêntico foi a forte entrega dos músicos durante a performance.

Dana Margolin (a vocalista) esteve mais concentrada e bem menos comunicativa. Notou-se igualmente um cansaço, a determinado ponto indisfarçável. Eles estão em digressão com concertos quase todos os dias desde 11 de novembro.

Apesar disso a jovem deu o seu melhor em palco, assim como os seus outros 3 companheiros de banda. Sam, Georgie e Maddie estavam aparentemente bem melhor e não se notou neles cansaço como em Dana.

Maddie Ryall no baixo [mais fotos clicar aqui] Eles entraram em palco pelas 22:10 horas ao som de “Maneater” canção da cantora canadiana Nelly Furtado. “Give / Take”, “End of Last Year” e “Splintered” foram as 3 primeiras tocadas e a partir da última citada a atuação prosseguiu num ritmo superior.

‘Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky’, álbum lançado em maio passado esteve fortemente representado na setlist. Invariavelmente tornou-se no foco do concerto naquela que foi apresentação muito sólida das canções mais recentes.

Não faltou igualmente a execução de algumas canções de ‘Every Bad’, disco de 2020. Sem surpresa a atuação terminou com “Sweet”, um dos temas âncora dos Porridge Radio, tocado após uma saída simulada antes do encore. Como a própria Dana afirmou, dada a exiguidade do espaço não dava para uma saída e consequente entrada de forma mais dramática…

Sam Yardley na bateria [mais fotos clicar aqui] “World Class Music” como quem diz música de classe mundial eram as palavras escritas no bumbo da bateria, provavelmente, de forma irónica. O que parece mais do que uma certeza irreversível é que eles estão no caminho correto para terem um maior reconhecimento a esse nível mundial.

O público presente esteve algo compenetrado e ficou sempre num estado morno. Pese essa situação não regateou as merecidas palmas nas transições dos temas. Pessoalmente esperava uma atitude mais calorosa, provavelmente por causa do concerto ter-se realizado num espaço mais propício para isso. Obviamente quem esteve presente foram fãs da banda, alguns até vindos de fora da cidade.

A banda seguiu para Lisboa aonde tocou no Super Bock em Stock terminando assim a sua breve passagem por Portugal neste mês de novembro.

Arya Stark Fancast Resource

So I don’t know about anyone else, but I’ve been having a hard time finding age-appropriate actors in period costumes when trying to create any content that doesn’t feature the actors from the show (not that I don’t love them all, just sometimes a change of pace is nice). That’s particularly true for characters whose book and show counterparts are significantly different in age. I thought I’d start putting together some resources for fancasts that are reasonably accurate to book descriptions, particularly after I saw the incredible Sansa Stark resource put together by BookSansaDaily.

So yeah, let’s start with Arya:

“Nine years old at the start of A Game of Thrones, Arya's appearance is more Stark than Tully, with a long face, grey eyes, and brown hair. She is skinny and athletic. She is generally regarded as plain, as exemplified by a nickname “Arya Horseface”, and is often mistaken for a boy.” (x)

RAFFEY CASSIDY - YOUNG SNOW WHITE (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN)

Raffey Cassidy was roughly 9 years old when filming Snow White and the Huntsman. The costume design is appropriately medieval, and I've found it a particularly good resource because of the number of clips where Raffey looks disheveled and/or tomboyish. Best for AGOT and pre-ASOIAF content.

ANNA MAGUIRE - YOUNG DANIELLE (EVER AFTER: A CINDERELLA STORY)

I can’t find an accurate birthday for Anna Maguire, but given that she played a 9-year-old character two years after this film, I feel confident placing her at 7-10 during the filming of Ever After. The film is set in the Renaissance rather than the Middle Ages, but Danielle’s clothes are still reasonably appropriate. As with Snow White and the Huntsman, this is a good resource for both AGOT and pre-ASOIAF content, especially since it contains footage of Anna Maguire looking both put together and covered in mud. She’s not as long-faced as Arya should be, but she’s got the appropriate mischievous energy.

IVANA BAQUERO - OFELIA (PAN’S LABYRINTH)

Pan’s Labyrinth is set in the 1940s, well outside appropriate ASOIAF timeframes, so Ivana Baquero is best used for stills and closeups. However, the scene in which she faces the toad (pictures 1 and 4 here) has her filthy and in reasonably time-neutral underclothes, so I’ve found it useful before for the period when Arya’s on the run with the Night’s Watch or the Brotherhood. Ivana was 11 when filming, so that puts her at a more appropriate age for later novels.

ANUK STEFFAN - HEIDI (HEIDI)

Again, not a period-appropriate film, but Heidi does spend a significant amount of it running around in an undershirt, so that’s useful for taking it out of time a bit. Anuk Steffan was 10 when filming, and this movie has the added benefit of portraying her with both long and short hair, which makes it particularly ideal for content portraying both Arya Stark and Arry the Orphan. She even occasionally runs around in boys’ clothing, albeit 19th century boys’ clothing.

A FEW OTHERS

1. ARABELLA MORTON - GAEL (THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER): Arabella was 10 when filming the third Narnia movie. She doesn’t have a ton of footage, but there’s some material between her and her onscreen father that’s potentially useful for Arya and Ned, and she’s got a mischievous spirit that feels very Arya to me.

2. UNKNOWN ACTOR - YOUNG SOPHIA/ZOE (SOPHIA): I’m not sure who this actor is (if you know, please tell me!) but she plays Young Sophia/Zoe in the Russian series Sophia. Based on her height, she’s significantly older than Arya, and she only appears in one sequence, which can be found here. However, I think her face is uncommonly perfect for Arya, so I’ve used her both for gifs and for stills.

3. HARRY STOTT - LUPUS (ROMAN MYSTERIES): Harry Stott was 11-12 when filming the TV series Roman Mysteries. He’s a useful resource when fancasting Arya in disguise as Arry, particularly in the Season 2 episode titled “The Fugitive from Corinth,” where he wears the brown traveling cloak you can sort of see in the picture above.

4. TOM TAYLOR - YOUNG UHTRED (THE LAST KINGDOM): Another good Arry fancast. Tom Taylor was 13ish when filming the first season of The Last Kingdom, which has particularly good cold weather, fur-based fashion. Heads up that the character of Young Uhtred was recast for later seasons, and the other kid looks much less like Arya.

Anyway, I hope this is useful, and feel free to add any additional actors you like to cast as Arya! I’m planning to make several of these for different characters; the full set can be found here once I’ve made more.

Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky by Porridge Radio

A waterslide takes you downstream in a giddy froth of running water. A diving board allows you to plummet from terrifying heights. A ladder to the sky lets you rise again, step by step. Porridge Radio’s latest album is all about the vertiginous swoop of ups and downs; of sudden, exhilarating rushes of energy; of equally abrupt descents into obsessive paranoia. It is, possibly, a response to the band’s dizzying rush to the top of the pile with 2020’s Mercury Prize-nominated Every Bad, followed by the dead stop of the pandemic and lockdown. Or not. In any case, it’s full of extremes, musical and otherwise.

This is the most extroverted-sounding album you could make about themes that are fundamentally inward-looking. Singer and bandleader Dana Margolin repeatedly drops the most self-lacerating observations into swelling, anthemic choruses. It’s like she’s whispering her deepest, most horrifying secrets into the maw of an Arcade Fire song. 

Take “Rotten,” for instance, which can’t help but evoke our recent COVID-19 experiences. “This year, the taste of apples changed,” sings Margolin, in her sharp, stirring alto, a voice that always seems to be overcharged and fairly spilling over with emotion. Yet, after she recounts the effects of illness, the soreness of muscles, the well-meaning admonitions to rest and eat well, the odd specificity of walking on the balls of her feet, Margolin lets the chorus fly. “Outside, outside, outside, it’s cold,” she sings, bolstered by buoyant currents of supporting voices, crashing guitars and rumbling, galloping drums. “Inside, inside, inside I can be alone,” she continues, as a circling mass of keyboard sounds swirls around her head. The song conveys both brokenness and giddy, heady healing, zooming from one pole to the other with febrile speed. 

In a similar fashion, “Birthday Party” starts in a smolder and blows into flame. Margolin performs here and elsewhere in a rhythmic chant, spitting out the words with increasing feeling as her songs progress. “I don’t want to be loved,” starts as a statement, but when repeated becomes a moan and then a shriek. The tension is always unbearable and always building. 

It is easy to focus on Margolin, whose voice and presence are so distinctive, but the rest of the band is good, too. They very ably fill out the sound so that it grows without becoming heavy; even as its loudest, Porridge Radio sounds like it could float right off into the sky. Drummer Sam Yardley is particularly fine, putting a punch and kick into these battering sounds, while keyboardist Georgie Stott elicits a dreamy, romantic swell that might remind you of Beach House. Margolin herself unleashes the grand guitar gestures that evoke big rock bands like U2 and, yes, Coldplay. 

But neither of these bands reveals anywhere near as much of the internal as Porridge Radio. “Cut off my shoes instead of taking them off, cut off my hands because they’re itching so much,” confides Margolin in “The End of Last Year.” Margolin taps into an obsessive, idiosyncratic vein of madness so personal that you’re tempted to look away—and then somehow transmutes it into rock triumph. She sounds nothing at all like P.J. Harvey, so it feels cheap to compare the two, but they have this in common.

Porridge Radio - Back To The Radio

Video for Back To The Radio from English indie rock four-some Porridge Radio, which is taken from the forthcoming album Waterslide, Diving Board, Ladder To The Sky and will be released on the 20th May 2022 via Secretly Canadian.

Porridge Radio are a British indie rock band formed in Brighton in 2015. They are fronted by vocalist, songwriter and lead guitarist Dana Margolin. The other members are keyboardist Georgie Stott, bass guitarist Maddie Ryall and drummer Sam Yardley.

I’m sort of doing this thing where I’m reading books and keeping a log of it, and if there’s a movie adaptation I try to watch it before moving on to the next book in the series. So I’ve been meaning to get to Prince Caspian for a while now after reading the book.

This one’s weird because a large chunk of the Chronicles of Narnia fandom doesn’t like this movie very much. And I pretty much loved it since I saw it in theaters? It’s not as faithful to the book as the previous film, but that doesn’t make it bad. I’m still struck by the design of the film, which stands out from most fantasy films of the time (and many today), and it’s got a lot of action! That’s enough to make me dig a fantasy movie.

_Prince Caspian_ is the second installment of Walden Media’s Chronicles of Narnia film series and the sequel to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. It’s also the last film in the series that was made by Disney, as they quit because they were disappointed by this one’s reception. Walden Media managed to get another studio to fund and distribute the third movie.

After a year in England, the Pevensies come back to Narnia to find that over a thousand years have passed. The country’s been conquered by the Telmarines who have driven the Narnia creatures into hiding, thinking they’d been wiped out. The Telmarine prince, Caspian X, is sympathetic to Narnians but didn’t know they still existed--that is, until he has to run from the palace and lead them in rebellion against his uncle who wants him dead to take the throne. The Pevensies are there to help of course, but Peter butts heads with Caspian (and his siblings) on how to best fight this war. And Aslan’s nowhere to be seen, except by Lucy, who can’t convince the others to follow that lead.

This movie does actually have a lot of content from the book, just rearranged or recontextualized. The Plot is completely reworked and I don’t mind that because a huge chunk of Caspian’s story in the book is being told to the Pevensies by Trumpkin--that would be a very frustrating way to tell his story in the movie. Some things, like the animals holding faith for Aslan when others don’t, is implied by the way scenes are done rather than outright told to the audience.

There are some things that are in both the book and movie, but the movie doesn’t quite explain what that’s about. The sparring match between Edmund and Trumpkin doesn’t really make much sense in the movie.

There’s also the attack on the castle. This sequence is invented entirely for the movie, and while it’s frustrating in a similar way that Finn and Rose’s subplot in The Last Jedi is, the book does mention the Narnians losing some battles and so actually showing that to the audience is fine. Also I like seeing the way they apply griffins and mice in the raid. That’s cool thinking and I wish to see more fantasy films think about how fantasy creatures might be used on military operations.

Also I really like the design of this movie? The Narnian side mostly keeps the same designs for their weapons and armor, but it’s a lot more worn down, and that makes sense because they’ve been hiding in the woods for a few hundred years. They don’t have new weapons. The Telmarines, on the other hand, look fantastic. For their culture, WETA Workshop was inspired by Spanish and Italian culture, so instead of longswords they use side swords and falchions, and their armor brings to mind a combination of Spanish conquistadors, Italian condottieri, and Japanese samurai. They look more Renaissance than medieval and I love it.

The cast is also matched up to that, with Spanish and Italian actors playing the roles of Telmarines. Ben Barnes is an exception, as he’s English, but he’s putting on his best Inigo Montoya impression as Caspian.

You know what? Let’s talk about this cast. Ben Barnes, back when he wasn’t just playing villains. I remember classmates in high school saying that he’s too old, but if he is that’s because the actor playing Peter is also too old. Caspian is supposed to be the same age as Peter, so I didn’t mind it here. I think he overdoes the whole “YOU KILLED MY FATHER” thing but I don’t think that’s Ben Barnes’s fault as much as he’s working with the Plot point that’s been sandwiched into the story.

William Moseley does very well in playing Peter as he’s written for this movie, the problem is that Peter in this movie is written to be an absolute prat. His whole arc in this movie is about learning that he doesn’t have to be in charge and to let Aslan take the wheel. This would make sense if his life experience was only what we saw in the last movie’s adventure, but we know that he apparently grew up in Narnia and became a successful and wise warrior king. So him being so full of himself here doesn’t make sense. I got over it, as I see what they were going for, deconstructing how a kid might feel after his time in Narnia, but it is very annoying and it makes Peter very unlikable.

Unlike Edmund, played by Skandar Keyes, who is absolutely THE SHIZ in this movie. Having learned his lesson from the last movie, Edmund is a cheeky wonder child who takes no crap from anyone. He doesn’t have that much of an arc in this movie, but he is great to watch, so I forgive it. He’s the guy who keeps his head screwed on straight when Peter and Caspian need someone to keep them grounded.

Anna Popplewell’s Susan is good? They still go with her being the “reasonable” one, albeit a little less uptight than in the first movie. They have this thing in the movie in which she and Caspian are definitely into each other and I don’t think that’s too out there--in the books Susan had at least half a dozen suitors when she was queen--it does mean that a lot of her character arc is dedicated to that, and we know that it goes nowhere. This one clearly implies that she’s having trouble holding faith in things she doesn’t see in front of her, and that’s a fascinating direction that doesn’t go quite as far in this movie as it could.

And Lucy. Georgie Henley as Lucy is still delightful. They removed and rearranged a lot of the material from the book in her character arc which is a shame, because I really like a lot of that stuff. As the one who still has the faith and wants to see the magic in Narnia when even the Narnians are giving up hope, she has to come across as sympathetic and believable. That doesn’t always work, especially when she does things like walk up to a bear that’s about to attack her, not realizing that it’s not talking (there ARE non-talking animals in Narnia, dear!). But for the most part she works in this movie.

You know Peter Dinklage is in this movie as Trumpkin? I find it odd that he made it big on a fantasy show that was billed as deconstructing usual fantasy tropes while heavily featuring sex and violence when he also starred in the film adaptation of a famously Christian book series and one of the giants of the fantasy genre. He does okay. I mean I like that Trumpkin is this grumpy guy who is cynical and tired of everyone and just wants to go home, but I don’t know if Peter Dinklage is acting or just… cynical and tired of everyone and wants to go home. It’s entertaining sometimes, but not brilliant.

And Warwick Davis is in this movie? He was in the BBC series as well, but instead of as Reepicheep this time he’s playing Nikabrik, the dwarf that is even more cynical than Trumpkin and hates all humans. It feels weird for me seeing him as a villain, though I know he’s done it before. I always had trouble with Nikabrik as a character because I always felt like him going full-on evil was… well, everyone seemed strangely unperturbed by that in the book, even if we had an idea of how we got there. In the movie I felt as if Warwick Davis does well in that you get him, and you get where he’s coming from, but not enough to agree. And other characters react to his turn in a way that’s appropriate.

Ken Stott voices Trufflehunter and he does not have enough to do in this movie. Trufflehunter is not that Plot-relevant in the book, but I always had the impression that he was an important character and one of the most prominent Narnians in the story. He’s okay here, but I really thought that he should be doing more in the story. Maybe the filmmakers didn’t think it would fit the darker tone they were going for, if there was a badger running around in many of the scenes? I don’t know, I wanted more.

We do, however, get quite a bit of Eddie Izzard as Reepicheep, which is fantastic because Reepicheep is fantastic. This mouse is amazing. There were some people very surprised that a mouse is going around killing people, but it’s a fantasy film, he’s a knight, and also it wasn’t as if the first movie didn’t have violence? I’m frustrated that the movies don’t go with the “talking animals are bigger than normal animals” EXCEPT with Reepicheep, because it’s pretty darn weird that all the other animals are ordinary-sized and the talking mice are the size of cats. But Reepicheep is very entertaining, very cool, and he’s great.

Sergio Castellitto plays a surprisingly sharp Miraz? Yeah, Plot-wise he’s generically evil, but I think that Castellitto makes him A) entertaining to watch, and B) convey that he knows that he’s the least popular guy in the room with the other Telmarine lords. The book version of Miraz has no idea that they’re plotting against him. Miraz in this movie does, and although he’s definitely not bright enough to realize exactly what they’re doing, by the end of the movie he knows that they’re happy to watch him die.

Pierfrancesco Pavino’s Glozelle, for instance, is barely a person in the book? He shows up to stab Miraz in the back. Here, not only is he not the person who does that, but the movie makes him very uncomfortable with the direction Miraz’s path to power is taking, despite remaining loyal until almost the very end. He’s a complex, conflicted character and I like him. 

And also noticeable is Damian Alcazar as Sopespian, a guy who doesn’t like Miraz, but is no more likable because of it. Because he’s obviously not doing it for any sense of the greater good, he’s doing it because he wants that power for himself. I don’t think anyone mistakes his motives or thinks of him as a secret good guy at any point in the movie, which I think speaks to the actor’s performance.

Liam Neeson is Aslan. He does great, though he really doesn’t have that many lines. Which is part of the point, that he’s not there for most of the movie, so it works, I think.

Also Tilda Swinton’s in this movie. There is some justification for it, but I think it was because she loved being in the first movie, and they loved having her in it, so they just brought her back.

I like fantasy movies with lots of action and sword fights and cool design choices. So no, Prince Caspian isn’t that faithful of an adaptation of the source material (though it’s more faithful than people give it credit for), and I do get frustrated with character arcs--mostly Peter’s. But I still really love this movie, and I have tons of fun every time I watch it.

Inspired by years living in London where family homes on tight blocks are the norm, Stewart Brooks (director at Architected) and Georgie Brooks (a contemporary jewellery designer) purchased a subdivided garden at the back of an existing house in Northcote, and set about building a clever new home there.

The result is a double-storey, three-bedroom residence. The house sits right on the rear boundary line, where a recycled brick exterior treatment faces the back lane and a garage opens to the laneway. Though tucked at the back of a subdivided block, the main entry to the house is via a gate on the street-facing portion of the original property. Once through this gate, visitors and residents are led past the original house and down a pathway dripping with established greenery.

The L-shaped home unfolds from here. Communal spaces wrap around a central courtyard with the kitchen, dining and living room sequence overlooking the floor-to-cieling glaze sliding and bi-fold doors. A home private office is secreted to the side.

Blonde timber floorboards recycled from local demolished houses were laid throughout the new home, but some fun is injected into the interior palette via pops of primary colours inspired by 1950s colour charts! The kitchen joinery exterior is painted a solid muted blue and fire-engine red inside. The same red appears in the powder-coated bench legs and central tap outlet.

Behind the kitchen, a staircase winds up to the three bedrooms and accompanying bathrooms on the first floor.

In the face of these clever design ideas, it’s the classic built-in window seat that stands out the most! Running the length of the living room beside a retractable glass window overlooking the deck, on sunny days the window slides back to create an indoor-outdoor seating element. So smart!

Porridge Radio are a British indie rock band formed in Brighton in 2015. They are fronted by vocalist, songwriter and lead guitarist Dana Margolin. The other members are keyboardist Georgie Stott, bass guitarist Maddie Ryall and drummer Sam Yardley.
