For the past several months I've been working (and am still working on) a cosplay of my OC George Jackdaw. George is a corvid bard, a jackdaw in fact, who didn't have a last name so it'll just put down it's species instead.
I'm using mostly @rah-bop 's tutorials (bless you and your tutorials on Rue) and a pattern from Etsy for the head. Here's some progress pictures, because I'm nowhere near finished:
Tumblr media
The mask is an EVA foam base from an etsy pattern for a corvid skull. I'm still racking my brain on how to add the eyes in there with me still being able to see.
Speaking of which, here's a little clip from my Twitch stream(same handle as here) that shows my prototype of animatronic eyes with an Arduino Nano Every. I've since changed the eyelid base from foam to 2mm aluminium wire.
Tumblr media
And some tail feathers that I added metal wire to for support (not pictured). I added flexbond primer today (also not pictured because I've been too busy) and sadly it covered a lot of the lines I scored in for detail, so I'll need to figure out a way to fix that. Or not.

Semi-in order of when you meet them.
Eleazar Fig: Cool guy, seems to care a lot about me so that's nice.

Ranrok: Naww who is this- DID HE JUST KILL THAT GOBLIN?!
Professor Black: Annoying. Annoying, Annoying, Annoying. GO AWAY.

Professor Hecat: Oh, she's cool.😎
Lenora Everleigh: So cute and has a very beautiful name.
Sirona Ryan: An absolute queen. Gave me free butterbeer and she seems really considerate of the other shop keepers. Oh and she defends me so yeah absolute queen.
Victor Rookwood: Uhh who is this guy? Oh shoot wait is he supposed to be another villain? His top hat is kinda goofy ngl. Also what kind of a threat is "Can't drink butterbeer forever?". I don't know whether to be intimidated or to laugh. Maybe both?

Reading your post about the DOTC leaders made me wonder - in BB, when does the DOTC naming style shift into the modern naming style? If they're already using modern-style names by the time Windstar's (possible) grandson is leader, that seems pretty quick - unless Cloudberry and Ryewhisker had DOTC-style names originally, and just got called modern-style names later on.
They did originally have DOTC style names! There's going to be more shuffles soon as I move to expand the Forest Cats into a third major cultural group, but I'm planning for all three of these groups to contribute to the naming system.
The older story, which I'm going to be shuffling now, is that two-part names came from Mountain Cats, but the name changes come from Park Cats.
Mountain Cats have a given prefix, and a familial suffix.
Whichever familial suffix the kittens receive is "political." Usually the names are split evenly, so as an example, Jackdaw Cry and Hawk Swoop named one twin Lightning Cry, and the other twin Acorn Swoop, but Clear Sky insisted that ALL of his kittens receive Sky as their familial suffix. Except Thunder Storm, of course, who he disowned.
This stops being used after the collapse of the River Kingdom and the massive conflict that came from the succession crisis. After that, Byyrkabraw, directly translated as "scab-forming" and roughly translated as "nepotism," becomes a taboo to be avoided. Sharing last names with your parents and family took on a bad, biased connotation for several generations.
Thus, the system dies in Clan Culture. However, it persists and evolves in Tribe Culture! Brook's name in BB is Brook Where-It-Swirls, and she shares the last name with her two brothers. They've kept last names, but the last names have gotten longer.
What DOES remain in Clan Culture is that Mountain-descendant cats 'prefer' 2-part names, and like to say the entire thing. It's Mountain culture that creates Clanmew's preference for contractions rather than syllable-shortening.
As an example, for a long name like... Dandelionbreeze, send her back in time to talk to a Park or Forest cat and they'll shorten her name to "Dan" or "Lion" or "Bree." It's the Mountain cat who would call her "Danzy," which becomes part of being 'polite' in Clanmew name shortenings.
Park Cats are born "nameless," and earn names as they grow.
It's PARK culture that was so centralized and ceremonial, with kings and a clearer hierarchy. As kits, they're just called by a characteristic trait. The Biggest One, Little Ears, Ginger. Their first real name is given when they're assigned as an apprentice, and they become [Mentor's Nickname] [Dominant Paw].
So as an example, because the prince is always mentored by their father and the king at the time was Arc-of-Park, Riverstar's very first name was Arc's Paw.
Once they're fully trained, they can earn titles. On average, a cat will earn two or three of these in their lifetime, discounting outliers like Titles Georg. These are three words or less, and usually reference strengths and achievements. Willow Flayed Bare, Slate Keeper, The Wind Runner.
These titles are made official by the King, which is where Warrior Name changes originally stem from.
In a situation where Park Cats have left their kingdom, they will turn towards the cat they recognize as an authority to make these name changes. In WindCo, either the "parriarch" of a homestead would bestow these names, or The Wind Runner herself. Thunder Storm began doing it on request, as the Park Cats who joined his cause wanted their names to come from him.
It's not seen as "appropriate" for a cat to name themself... but there are rebellious cats, who may forge their own titles, if they're willing to eat the social implications.
River's Ripple was quite independent. He came up with his own name, and then asked his papa to make the name official. King Arc of Park argued with him a lot about this, especially because the name he chose sounded a lot like an apprentice's title, and only caved in when he realizes there would be a MASSIVE scandal if it looked like his prince would willingly bypass the will of his father entirely.
(The Wind Runner's name was "crowdsourced." She didn't give it to herself; that's what WindCo calls her.)
Forest Cat names...
So there's the two-parts from the Mountain cats, and the name changes from the Park cats... and now I'm trying to work in a third element here, which I'm still trying to figure out.
I'm thinking of putting ranks into their names, since I'm starting with a given that Slash/Shai/Silverpelt is their leader. Maybe have it so that the name the Park/Mountain cats call him is "Slashes" in reference to his leg markings, but his real name is Silver-Star, with all of his cats just referring to him as his rank, Silver (formally) or his given name, Star (informally)
(Over time his name is going to become Silverpelt. They believe that he became heaven itself. Ssoen becomes Clanmew's opening particle for omnipotent knowledge, Star becoming the leader suffix.)
Then make it so that his followers follow the Rank-Given name system. So there's Claw-Milkweed, her daughter Kit-Bramble, a good hunter might be Whisker-Violet. So, over a very short number of generations, both the Forest Cat and Park Cat naming systems start to meld, since it's not all that different.
ALSO NOTEWORTHY: The Wind Coalition was more mixed with Forest Cats than the River Kingdom was. So the Park/Forest name schemes beginning to mix together would be beginning up on the Moor, while there would be more Mountain/Forest mixing happening in Thunder's Clan.
This is a WIP section btw, these guys are still extremely new.
Anyway, skip forward a few generations
Cloudberry's and Ryewhisker's names aren't the ones they had in life. The were active 25-ish years after DOTC, after the collapse of the River Kingdom when things had begun to "settle down."
With the Law of the Deputy, Commandment 3, WindCo and River Kingdom are now Clans. They operate with a Leader and a Deputy.
In-canon, Cloudberry is the daughter of the RiverClan leader, Emberstar. I'm not sure if that's going to remain; because I still haven't chosen who Riverstar's successor is. The Law of Loyalty is Commandment 4 and I'm committed to Duststar of WindClan being alive and in a position of power during the succession crisis.
It could be that Cloudberry's father is Riverstar's successor, OR I swap Ryewhisker to be Duststar's son/grandson instead and include a small detail that Duststar feels a need to prove he's NOT being biased in favor of his dead descendant by forcing this commandment through.
Maybe both, that could be fun. Romeow and Mewliet type thing. Two Clans, alike in their digkitty.
Anyway, point being, Cloudberry is from Park Cat culture as a member of RiverClan, which was heavily influenced by some pretty open travel between the groups under Riverstar's rule. The modern naming system was coming together, as cats of these three cultures mixed, but it wasn't quite there yet. So Cloudberry probably had a full title, while Ryewhisker had a title and a rank.
It might even be a translation quirk. Cloudberry is also called "knout," and it's a red-orange fruit that comes to be heavily valued in the Clans. Knout Berry Keeper, which is only remembered as Knout-Berry, written as Cloudberry.
(It would be cute if the direct translation was Cloudberry Cloud.)
For Ryewhisker, the most I know with him is that he's somehow related to the guy who invents Tunnelbuns, or at LEAST some kind of inventive contributor (such as a person who invents bread). He gets his name from that-- Rye is one of the most easily accessible grains.
I haven't nailed their names down yet, since by the modern era, they're known as Cloudberry and Ryewhisker. But they did actually have different names, which have changed over the years.
They also didn't speak Modern Clanmew, their native tongue was actually the border between the Mountain/Park/Forest pidgin and the creole language that would soon be born! A linguist might describe it as Ancient Clanmew.

Famous Five Art Nostalgia #18 – Part 4A
Introductory post
Masterpost
⛏️💎🗡️ Five on Finniston Farm – Le Club des Cinq et le coffre aux merveilles
Original publication date: 1960 (UK), 1962 (France)
Tumblr media
(Cover art by Jean Sidobre, Vermeille collection, 1973)
Here come the illustrations from the third book (out of seven) published in the Vermeille collection. Some illustrations are the same that were used in the Bibliothèque Rose edition (see Part 2), and some are new!
This set of illustrations will be split in two due to length. Part B will come tomorrow. Enjoy!
~~~~~~
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
The Famous Five spend their summer holidays at Finniston Farm as paying guests. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the pleasant Mrs Philpot and her identical twins, Henry and Harriet, jointly known as “the Harries”. The twins seem to take an instant dislike to the Five.
Tumblr media
(Julian and Dick struggle in the heat on their bikes while George and Anne have comfortably chosen to take the bus!)
Tumblr media
(All Five are reunited and discovering their holiday spot)
Tumblr media
(A pastoral view of Finniston Farm)
Tumblr media
(Dick meets Snippet, the twins’ poodle)
Tumblr media
(Due to there not being enough rooms in the farmhouse, Julian and Dick set up camp-beds in the barn, much to the twins’ initial chagrin, who are also sleeping there and don’t appreciate this intrusion into their space)
Tumblr media
(Timmy soon makes friends with Great-Grandad, the family’s patriarch)
The Five also meet two fellow paying guests: an American, Mr Henning, and his son, Junior. Mr Henning plans to buy antique pieces from the farm and sell them in America. Mr and Mrs Philpot agree to sell their farm treasures as they need the money. However the family's hot-tempered Great-Grandad feels the antiques should remain in England.
Tumblr media
(Meet Junior and Mr Henning)
Mr Henning and Junior prove themselves a nuisance to the household by rudely ordering around Mrs Philpot. Sympathetic to Mrs Philpot, the Five offer to help with farm chores. When Junior demands breakfast in bed, George teaches him a lesson, making him agree to not slave Mrs Philpot thereafter. This wins the hearts of the Harries and they make friends with the Five.
Tumblr media
(The children have been helping around at the farm, and Dick is very proud at having better success than Julian at milking the cows, which Dick attributes to the cows’ loving his singing voice – far be it from me to disagree, but an argument could be made that Julian himself was distracted from his task by the very same lovely singer… 🎶 😏)
Tumblr media
(Julian awakes with a start in the middle of the night, only to realise he’s just been disturbed by a harmless owl on its way to hunting a mouse)
Tumblr media
(Dick experiences some not-so-welcome excitement in the morning when Nosey, the twins’ pet jackdaw, steals his watch)
Tumblr media
(The twins shows the Five how they can be told apart: Harry has a small scar on the back of his hand)
Tumblr media
(The Five, along with the twins, get to enjoy a visit of the farmland in an old Land Rover* driven by farmhand Bill)
[*Note: The old car is identified as a Ford, not a Land Rover, in the French version. My absolute lack of knowledge about cars prevents me from appreciating if the depicted car is actually a Ford or any other make and model.]
Tumblr media
(Continuing the tour of the farmland)
To be continued!
The Tolpuddle Martyrs
The first project in my summer to do list is the Jackdaws serials (? I guess that’s what they are.) that came across my desk. Of the titles, the one that caught my eye first was the bright yellow jacket of The Early Trade Unions Including the Founding of the National Trades Unions and the Prosecution of the Tolpuddle Martyrs : A Collection of Contemporary Documents Compiled by Sheila Lewenhak.
Yes, that's the entirety of the title. It even looks just as wordy as the title suggests.
Tumblr media
So what intriguing papers are included in Jackdaws No. 35? Copies (facsimiles they were called back in 1966) of original documents relating to the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Who were the Tolpuddle Martyrs and why did they matter? Well, in the early 1800s, British Tradesmen and Craftsmen (I didn't see any Proof that women were members of these groups) began to form unions under the threat of cheap labour destroying their livelihoods. That cheap labour? Why the steam-powered factories that exploited women and children. Unions controlled who could enter the trade. They controlled the quality output of the work (so as not to create crap product). They also controlled pricing.
Some of these unions were all esoteric and shit. With initiation rites and secret handshakes. They had to swear to secrecy about the groups because it seemed that trade unions were also trading amongst themselves. They figured out value of goods based on hours spent creating them, and then bartered goods amongst themselves for that value. Banks (at the time) created their own money, but this was creators basically making their own currency and keeping the banks out of it. Very much communal commerce.
It's no wonder that The Man (I'm not quite sure who exactly The Man was in this case, but I could guess by following the lack of pound notes) made unions illegal.
Tumblr media
Yeah. Liable to be transported. I mean now I would love to be sent to Australia and live there for 7 years. Beaches. Sun. Kickass wildlife. Back then, it was like being sent to the end of the earth. I'm not even going to touch the bullshit that was/is colonialism and how it destroyed places like Australia, but hey I could understand their fear. Everything you know, everyone you know, you cannot see them for 7 years. It's like going to the Moon. Or Mars. And instead of minutes to be able to communicate with someone, it's months if not years to send letters. If you could even return, there's no telling whether your life will be waiting for you. I have a 2 year old daughter and I can tell you that 2 years is a massive amount of difference.
So with all this backstory, we come up to the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Six men from Tolpuddle were convicted under the anti-union laws (? though I don't know if actual laws were created) and sentenced to 12 years transportation. Check 'em out. I'm loving the waistcoats. Mssrs James Brine (25), Thomas Stanfield (51), John Stanfield (25), James Loveless (29), and George Loveless (41).
Tumblr media
One is missing, a James Hammett (22). I'm not sure why they didn't draw him. So off they were sent to Australia. And not just them, but also their families.
Check this out:
Tumblr media
This is a public poster of support for the Tolpuddle Martyrs. It's the most British thing ever.
Dinner on table at half-past two precisely.
The Dinner will be served hot, of the best description, in the large Room of the Tavern, and will consist of every sort of Roast and Boiled Meats, Hams, Vegetables, Bread, Porter ; Plumb Pudding, and Tarts.
CONCERT AND BALL
Eventually public support got their transportation overturned. Only one (our buddy Hammett) stayed in England. The rest emigrated to London, Ontario, Canada where they lived out in quiet obscurity until people recognised their names and put up memorial plaques over a century later.
There's more information to be had in the files and I'm sure if I did a deeper dive I could come up with some great articles in academic databases. But I have more Jackdaws to catalogue and I want to add them to my tumblr!
Y'all I am very excited to say that I have a piece in the upcoming anthology "Clamour and Mischief" from Clan Destine Press!
Clamour & Mischief is about the corvidae family of birds (ravens & crows) and my story is a retelling of the tale "The 7 Ravens." It got downsized to only 3 ravens, but it did keep its creepy nature. <3
Edited by Narrelle M Harris @221b-hound
Artwork including spine art above by @altocello
A clamour of rooks. A mischief of magpies. A storytelling of crows.
All the corvids – the rooks and ravens, the jays and jackdaws, the crows and magpies – have the best collective nouns. A parliament and a party. Tidings and titterings, bands and trains. An unkindness.
Clamour and Mischief brings a veritable storytelling of crows to the corvidae, the bird family known for intelligence and cunning and for their connection with folklore and urban legends. These storytellers come from around the world and include award-winning and -shortlisted authors as well as emerging writers and fledgling authors in their professional debut.
This anthology’s sixteen striking stories are imbued with all the humour, darkness, wisdom, artfulness, vengefulness and magic of the birds that inspired them. Take them as a jest, a guide, or a warning – but don't, whatever you do, ignore them!
Narrelle M Harris and Clan Destine Press are proud to announce the Table of Contents for Clamour and Mischief, due for release in the last quarter of 2022.
Famous Five Art Nostalgia #18 – Part 1
Introductory post
Masterpost
⛏️💎🗡️ Five on Finniston Farm – Le Club des Cinq et le coffre aux merveilles
Original publication date: 1960 (UK), 1962 (France)
Tumblr media
(Original cover art by Jeanne Hives, 1962)
There's not a lot to say about this book whose plot is rather straightforward but which does contain some nice character moments.
It's also the ONLY book from the original editions --illustrated by Baudouin, Durand, Amicis and Hives-- that I don't own a physical copy of 😬 (yet?) Not true anymore 😊
The French title translates to "Famous Five and the Coffer/Chest/Trunk of Wonders." Enjoy!
~~~~~~
Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):
The Famous Five spend their summer holidays at Finniston Farm [la ferme des Trois-Pignons] as paying guests. Upon arrival, they are greeted by the pleasant Mrs Philpot [Mme Bonnard] and her identical twins, Henry [Daniel] and Harriet [Danièle], jointly known as “the Harries” [les Daniels*]. The twins seem to take an instant dislike to the Five.
[* Note: It never occurred to me when I first read this book as a kid, but the twins’ having essentially the same name – the only distinction being the male and female variants – is really stupid. Who agreed to name the kids this way at birth??! The English version, featuring Henry and Harriet, is marginally more sensible.]

(An appetising welcome at the farm!)
The Five also meet two fellow paying guests: an American, Mr Henning, and his son, Junior [these characters are also American in the French version, and thus keep the same names]. Mr Henning plans to buy antique pieces from the farm and sell them in America. Mr and Mrs Philpot agree to sell their farm treasures as they need the money. However the family's hot-tempered Great-Grandad feels the antiques should remain in England [France].
Mr Henning and Junior prove themselves a nuisance to the household by rudely ordering around Mrs Philpot. Sympathetic to Mrs Philpot, the Five offer to help with farm chores. When Junior demands breakfast in bed, George teaches him a lesson, making him agree to not slave Mrs Philpot thereafter. This wins the hearts of the Harries and they make friends with the Five.
Tumblr media
(As part of their chores, the boys help with milking the cows) [Note: I don’t know why Julian looks so smug here, because the text states that Dick has better success due to the cows’ liking his singing voice!]
Tumblr media
(Dick gets his watch stolen by Nosey, the twins’ cheeky pet jackdaw!)
Tumblr media
(Junior’s wake-up service is a tad too forceful for his taste)
Tumblr media
(Five-star service, no complaints accepted, no refunds!)
Tumblr media
(Meet the twins’ pets: Snippet the poodle [Friquet le caniche] and Nosey the jackdaw [Zoé la pie])
Anne and George visit a nearby antique shop, owned by a Mr Finniston [M. Francville], who tells them about a secret passage from Finniston Castle to an old chapel and cellars where royal treasure might be hidden.

The girls excitedly reveal the news to the boys and the twins. Together, they plan to hunt for the cellars on the farm.
Tumblr media
(The girls come to tell the boys what they have learned at the antique shop; meanwhile, the boys have been busy helping with small work around the farm 🔨)
Tumblr media
(The twins, like the Five, are very interested in the story about the old castle)
They come across the castle's kitchen-midden* and realise they are close to finding the treasure.
[* Per Julian’s words: “‘A kitchen-midden is what you might call the rubbish-heap of the old days,’ explained Julian picking up some oyster shells. ‘It was often very big, when it comprised the rubbish thrown out from large houses – or castles! Things like bones and shells wouldn’t rot away like other rubbish – and I do believe we’ve found the kitchen-midden of the old castle.’”
In the translated version, Julian/François uses the Danish word for it: “kjœkkenmœdding” (that's a mouthful!), adding that they learned about it from their history teacher recently. A French word exists for it (“amas coquillier”), but the Danish word is apparently more widely used by archaeologists: « C’est un terme archéologique pour désigner les dépôts d’ordures des temps anciens, expliqua François en ramassant quelques débris. »]
Tumblr media
(I’ll just quote the book for this doggie-bliss scene: “Snippet, who had run in fright to the twins as soon as Great-Grandad had begun to shout, ran back to him, and settled on his feet. Timmy also decided to join them, and soon Great-Grandad was completely happy again, drawing on his old pipe, with one dog at his feet, the other resting a great head on his knee.” »)
Junior spies on the Five and the twins, and rushes to break the news to his father and his father's friend Mr Durleston, who decide to excavate the castle site, find the fortune and sell the goods in America. Mr and Mrs Philpot consent to the excavation, much to the dismay of the children. The children dig around the site, hoping to beat the men in finding the treasure. Initially they are unsuccessful but Snippet and Nosey lead them to a burrow, beneath which the secret passage stretches out. The children discover the cellars and the treasure, only to become trapped inside the tunnel when the entrance caves in.

(Two boys hard at work! ⛏️)

(The treasure 😮)
Tumblr media
(Crawling underground…)
They take another way and reach a trapdoor under the old chapel, which is now used as a storehouse. The farmhands Bill [Roger] and Jamie [Maurice] hear their shouts and let them out. The children get back to the farm and tell their exciting story to the astonished adults. The next day, Mr Henning and Mr Durleston try to trick the Philpots into believing the site has no treasure and offer them a meagre amount. However, Mr Philpot, backed up by his Grandad and Mr Finniston, declines the offer, making it clear they will excavate the site themselves and no longer want the Americans to stay.
Tumblr media
(Great-Grandad has found a new lease of life! 🗡️)
Tumblr media
(Great-Grandad tells Mr Henning in no uncertain terms what he can do with himself! 😤)
The adventure ends with the Five planning to stay at the farm to observe the excavation of the treasure.

A Fabulous Wood-Engraved Feathursday
Yesterday we presented  a selection of wood engravings from One Hundred Fables, written and selected by the English painter James Northcote and printed by British printer and wood engraver John Johnson for the London print publisher George Lawford in 1828. The book includes 280 wood engravings. Northcote devised the designs for the illustrations that head each fable, and the noted British wood engraver William Harvey, one of Thomas Bewick’s favorite students, drew Northcote’s designs on wood, which in turn were engraved by several accomplished wood engravers. Today we bring you some of the feathered engravings from this book. Shown here from top to bottom:
1.) "The Fowler and the Birds" engraved by Robert Branston. 2.) "The Club of Birds" engraved by George Wilmot Bonner. 3.) "The Eagle and the Jackdaw" engraved by Henry White. 4.) "The Eagle, the Jackdaw, and the Magpie" engraved by Henry White. 5.) "The Owl's Assembly of Birds" engraved by John Jackson. 6.) "Aesop and the Poultry" engraved by John Jackson. 7.) "The Bee and the Cuckoo" engraved by John Jackson. 8.) "The Nightingale" engraved by Thomas Mosses. 9.) "The Eagle and the Sycophant-Bird" engraved by Robert Branston. 10.)"The Parrot" engraved by George Wilmot Bonner.
