Someone said Einstein debunked the heliocentric model of our solar system almost a century ago.

Why, oh why, oh why the freak why is science dying in this day and age? Or are idiots getting more platforms that they couldn’t get in the past? Where is this coming from? I love science so much and this can almost bring me to tears over its failure to reach some kids within our education systems.

And NO, this CANNOT be blamed on our education system. This is solely the kids to blame. Because these are people who take education with an Empire State Building of salt and think that teachers are teaching them the wrong stuff. They think their skepticism is using logic or critical thinking. CRITICAL THINKING is the seat of skepticism. Skepticism without critical thinking is no different than blind faith.

This argument is really bad. Just, stunningly out of touch with the intellectual problems the actual cosmological debate raises, and a bit confused about the difference between a day and year

If you watch the video, you can see a time lapse of a single day where the sun rotates around the Earth. There's no evidence in the video that the Earth is moving, and your normal experience should be that the things around you are fixed. If you're on a merry-go-round you have to hold on, or you're at risk of getting flung off. The obvious inference from this is that the thing you see moving is moving and the thing you see holding still is holding still---geocentricism is the obvious conclusion here. The solution to this turns out to be inertial frames. If you get a merry-go-round up to speed and keep it there you don't have to hold on anymore because you're turning at the same speed as the merry-go-round. Before it was easy to construct objects and get them up to a constant speed like this, this was not an obvious thing, and the experience with moving "vehicles" came from horses, which are famously hard to stay on. You could argue this in an ancient society, it's just going to be even more counterintuitive than in a world where you can walk around planes.

There's still a problem with that, though! Coriolis argued that this was nonsense because if you fired a cannonball north, it should get deflected East as it fell closer to the Earth's axis and the earth moved slower closer to the axis. You've probably never observed this firsthand, though if you've ever tracked a hurricane on satellite or radar---something you couldn't do in the 1600s---you have seen it happen. It turns out on the Earth the size of the effect is most noticeable at continental scales, but precision artillery strikes over many miles have to account for it. It is downright hilarious, by the way, the that effect is named for a guy who thought it was nonsense. At any rate, you can't see that at the poles any better than in Italy.

And then, to cap it off, the diagram he puts up for heliocentrism is about the revolution of the Earth around the sun, which is a different problem of watching the sun apparently orbit the Earth in a day. The ancients knew the stars orbited once a day and that the sun mostly moved with the stars, but moved in a circle against the stars over the course of a year, and that the planets wandered even more. (There are two slightly different definitions of a day whether you wait for the stars to come back to the same spot in the sky or the sun to come back---astronomy will give you a nosebleed with this stuff.) The ancient Greeks would have eviscerated this guy with rhetoric if he showed up mixing up a day and a year like this!

As another aside, one of Galileo's' arguments for Heliocentrism was it explained the tides because that was an example of something getting thrown around merry-go-round style. It turns out, that's not the cause of the tides and people at the time gave correct refutations of the idea. The fact that there are two tidal effects, one generally tied to the day and one tied to the month, was a major problem for the idea of sloshing, but in Galileo's defense, the tides are extremely finicky and don't follow any simple rules so the idea wasn't completely bonkers. But the Heliocentrists were often putting forward wrong arguments, which sapped credibility from what was already a counter-intuitive hypothesis. Science requires not the right answer, but a good argument for that answer!

Your ancestors weren't dumb and had good, rational reasons for thinking the Earth was stationary---and your day-to-day experience should be that's the obvious observation. Finding a place where they could watch the sun's whole rotation with the stellar sphere would be seen as proof for a spherical, geocentric Earth!

Alternative Conspiracy Theories:

1. CURVED SPACE

The Earth is flat, but the curvature of spacetime is so extreme as to make it appear rounded. This accounts for many of those niggling little issues that pop up when considering a Flat Earth, such as why ships seem to disappear below the horizon, or why you can see further from up high.

The repercussions of Curved Space are not to be underestimated. Consider: perhaps no stars exist other than the sun, and what we perceive to be stars are in fact the sun’s light traveling out in all directions along the curvature of the universe (which, if it is not uniform, allows for some rays of light to travel further, many hundreds of thousands of light years further than others), finally curving back to reach us again at different intervals as multiple images of the same star at various points in its life.

(Red giants and supernovae are where the light had to travel for so long that it’s older now. Binary stars are two different images of the sun superimposed where space curves in on itself. You can’t catch me napping! I’ve thought this all out!)

2. MANY MOONS

This theory was first conceived in inquiry to why a Flat Earth still appears to cast a rounded shadow across the moon. In fact, what we call the moon is really multiple different celestial objects, one resembling the full moon, one the crescent moon, one the gibbous, and so on. These various bodies orbit the Earth like comets, in long elliptical paths that coincide such that only one of them is near enough to be visible from Earth at any given time.

Uncommon lunar events, such as the blood moon, supermoon, etc., are unique celestial bodies of their own, and it is the Great Work of moonwatchers to compile a comprehensive accounting of all the different moon-like objects that have ever appeared in the sky. While Many Moon believers generally accept the validity of the moon landings, they also believe that human beings have only ever successfully landed on moons # 2, 4, and 5.

3. GEOCENTRICISM 2.0

According to the Theory of Relativity all motion is relative, and so it makes just as much sense to model the Earth as a stationary object with the sun and moon revolving around it, and all the other planets in their epicycles around the sun.

Why not? You think our current model of the solar system is valid? Pfft! I bet you still think Mercator maps are what the world really looks like. The sun isn’t even stationary, it’s moving through the universe, and so to keep with your outdated heliocentric model we’d have to imagine all the other planets spiraling after it in helices - how’s a geocentric model any more complicated than that?

It would be more intuitive! We’re the observers here on Earth, we’re stationary, from our perspective the sun and moon move across the sky. C’mon! Ptolemy had it right. Instead of a solar system, we should all be taught about our geo system! It’s all perfectly reasonable, right?

Okay, I guess technically, yes, there is a conspiracy. It does say on the website that the current solar system model is being propagated by a “cabal of postmodernist astronomers” looking to deliberately “devalue the significance of humanity in the cosmos”. But it’s true! They are! Just look at how much sense the geocentric model makes, and we’re yet still stuck revolving around the sun? Open your eyes! What explanation is there other than that?

5. ACCELERATING EARTH

The Earth is held in the gravitational orbit of the sun. Gravity is acceleration—this is basic physics. Let something drop and it’ll keep going faster until it hits the ground or hits terminal velocity. Air resistance. There is no air resistance in space. The Earth is, has been, in constant acceleration. Freefall. It’s going faster now than it’s ever been before. 

You feel it, don’t you? In the pit of your stomach? Earth is going faster. It’s fucking up the atmosphere, the climate. We’re going so fast that we must be blazing like a meteor now. The dharma involves selfless work to release people from those facets of the astral/desire nature which inhibit the flow of the Universal loving matrix (Second Ray). For the individual with the Sun in Virgo, the outer field of service will be indicated by the house position of this Earth in the natal chart. Jupiter and Neptune, the exoteric rulers of this sign, add even more loving idealism to this effort, but the fundamental nature of the Earth itself serves to balance such aspirations within the context of practicality.

Too many people forget that the U in UFO stands for Unidentified.

We’re still discovering phenomena and learning about our surroundings. Assuming that something is automatically an extraterrestrial spacecraft simply because currently available explanations don’t account for it is unscientific as well as just plain dumb.

A lot of the obsession with alien extraterrestrials visiting Earth has to do with many people assuming that we are so interesting or important that intelligent beings from other star systems would want to visit Earth. That’s a form of planetary narcissism. In some ways it’s psychological geocentricism.

I suspect that there are intelligent civilizations elsewhere in the galaxy but they are few and far between. And they are probably at different stages of scientific, cultural, and sociological development than we are.

In Star Trek terms, Homo sapiens sapiens would probably come across as a cross between the Ferengi and the Klingons to extraterrestrials. What sort of impression would extraterrestrials get of a planetary civilization ruled by militaristic, greedy, self-important crackpots like Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Narendra Modi, Rodrigo Duterte, Xi Jinping, and Jair Bolsonaro?

We have been producing radio signals in a major way for only about a century. Given that we’re in the exurbs of the Milky Way Galaxy, the odds are against anybody else knowing that we’re even here.

While it’s fun to speculate about extraterrestrial life, there is no genuine scientific evidence that any of those folks have been here. Area 51 conspiracy theories are just as idiotic as QAnon conspiracy theories.

Analysis of Messages for Down Here

This painting represents a multitude of idea’s from this semester so far. It is a projection of possible futures. While I was looking at the golden records I was hypothesizing ways in which they would be received. I’ve heard it referred to as a call for help; an SOS although I don’t think this was the case. If that does end up being the case, my guess is that it is unintentionally so. Secretary General of the UN Kurt Waldheim speaks on the record “I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of the immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step.”. It seems like a request to join some galactic spacefaring commonwealth of advanced civilizations, though many elements of its design and content hint that it was limited by the priority of needing to please everybody on earth before its intended audience. You have instances such as a nude photo of an expecting couple that drew backlash and had to be removed in favor of a silhouette of said photo, or the pulsar map which essentially doxes our solar system for anything to find which was controversial at the time given potential hostility we could be inviting over. There was also the matter of representation, whether that be ethnic or artistic, some corners had to be cut and languages fell by the wayside so that a wider variety of information could be focused on. So there is this contention between scientific discovery and respecting the etiquette of those who were not meant to receive it. In saying that however, the voyager records represent humans, so everybody. Wherever they go, we go, and so I think those people definitely had the right to feel upset if they felt misrepresented or that they were being disrespected beyond reason. The records were a big ask for inclusivity but they were handled quite sensitively from what I can gather. 

Up above, the sky, space, the aether, heavens. Long have we associated the skies with the great beyond. With space travel we have now glimpsed into heaven and found no pantheons or all knowing beings. There is a lot of emptiness in space, and we are very small within all of it. And so on that note I have placed this “pale blue dot” on a painted black board the greatly dwarfs it as a feature. It is placed in the middle of a simplified version of the voyagers pulsar map (Still accurately measured, just lacking some details such as quasar distances written out in binary) with which earth usually would not at all feature, but I wanted to make sure the earth was big enough to make the pulsar map unreadable, more like an accessory to earth that gives it a star-like presence going back to geocentricism. It’s relatively small but demands attention, being much larger than the golden dot below it on a long stem that within the pulsar map signifies the middle of the galaxy. I have chosen the orientation of the board and pulsar map to look almost as if it were to support a crucifix. A religious art cliché but that’s the point, drawing on similarities to the point of origin within the future projection.

The rings emitting from the sphere are purple, like the skeleton tucked away inside said sphere. I was actually prompted to look into this based on a discussion in class where we were talking about what purple suggested to us. The first thing that came to my mind was spirituality and we discussed it. I wanted to look into it further, which lead me to a couple of conclusions. Yes purple is associated with wealth and royalty but psychologically speaking it seems to be majorly associated with unseen forces like mysticism, magic and spirituality. Life and death and ghostly signals beamed into empty heavens with nobody listening that we know of, or not as we know it. I chose ultramarine specifically for its associations also. Ultramarine comes from the Latin wording for “beyond the sea” like the sky or how human life also evolved in the ocean before leaving it behind. Due to being historically sourced from lapis lazuli it has at times been valued more than gold, reserved for expensive commissions such as Christian iconography in Europe. My depiction of earth in this that is precious, it is home. 

To me this painting in general serves a few narratives. It could be some hypothetical future where the pulsar map is followed back to earth at a time where we are fossils. It could be analogous of the voyagers themselves that take the concept of human life outward as our furthest tangible thumbprint in the universe yet, that wherever they go we go. It could be about how we are stuck here alone for the foreseeable future with so much uncertainty. It could just be about wanting more from life on earth and being in denial of mortality. In general its ideas revolve around self preservation on a personal, spiritual, technological and cosmic sense.

Copernicus is most famous for his heliocentric model of the universe, which shattered Aristotle’s theory of geocentricism when he proposed that planets revolve around the sun in 1543. In the Middle Ages, science was referred to as natural philosophy and it intertwined closely with religion. The church adhered to Aristotle’s writings about the structure of the universe since it complemented religious dogma. The Greek philosopher’s geocentric universe was composed of 10 separate crystal spheres. Beyond the tenth sphere laid God and heaven [source: McKay, Bennett and Buckler]. But the age of the Renaissance brought with it a renewed interest in astronomy, and all that star-gazing would inadvertently contradict the church’s conception of the cosmos. Copernicus’ theory discarded Aristotle’s crystal spheres and enlarged the universe to infinite proportions. Though a Christian himself, Copernicus effectively displaced God and heaven and stripped man’s central role in the physical realm, which attracted intense criticism from both Protestants and Roman Catholics.

The Philosophy of Truth

Dissecting the truth is a laborious task that may result in man’s changed perception of the truth. Hence, conflict may arise until a person or a group comes up with a logical argument about the truth. And how do we do that? Through the methods of Science, of course. However, the philosophy of truth is too complicated a matter that even the Scientific method won’t suffice. The ways of Science goes like this: propose a question; come up with possible answers (hypotheses); test the hypotheses; repeat the experiment many times; and, take note of the results. From this, the answer emerges and the hypotheses are declared as either true or false (right or wrong). However, a philosopher’s view of truth differs greatly. To philosophers, there are instances in which the Scientific method falters. In philosophy, the truth comes in various versions. Some people’s truths are confined to their beliefs, others to their pride. Religion and culture affect our perception of certain matters. Also, selfishness, pride, and insecurities often drive a man to create his versions of the truth. Both, however, do not affect the real truth. These influence only affect man’s perception of the truth. Moreover, man’s thirst for knowledge often leads him to discoveries that contradicts what has been declared as truth. A good example of this is the Geocentricism which indicated that the Earth was the center of the universe. It wasn’t until later knowledge, paired with technological developments, did Copernicus discovered that the Sun was the center of the Solar System and that there are planets revolving around it, including Earth. This is one of the most difficult things about truth: the truth we carry now may not be tomorrow’s truth. Such a thought leads us to contemplate if we have ever really grasp on the real truth. Science has helped us debunk many truths of the past. Even theories of truth such as correspondence theory and coherence theory of truth have their loopholes. Given that there are many theories which govern the truth, it only goes to show how determining the real truth is an existential challenge. The truth may not be as deep nor as shallow as we assume it to be, but perhaps we have stumbled over it and allowed the human mind to make something out of it. Wavelength, dimension, and DNA all limit the capacity of human perception, regardless of scientific and material observation. There is a 0% chance that we are superior to the surrounding entities and underlying energy composing being at all. In short, our world is a piece of an intelligent and a conscious infinity. Around the turn of the 20th century, in order to save the dying heliocentric model from the conclusive experiments of Airy, Michelson, Morley, Gale, Sagnac, Kantor, Nordmeyer and others, Albert Einstein created his Special Theory of Relativity, a brilliant revision of heliocentricism which in one philosophical swoop banished the universal aether from scientific study replacing it with a form of relativism which allowed for heliocentricism and geocentricism to hold equal merit. If there is no absolute aetheric medium within which all things exist, then hypothetically one can postulate complete relativism with regard to the movement of two objects, such as the Earth and Sun. At the time, the Michelson-Morley and Michelson-Gale experiments had already long measured and proven the existence of the aether, but the church of heliocentricism was not to be deterred, Einstein never tried to refute the experiments scientifically, choosing instead to object philosophically with his notion of “absolute relativity,” claiming that all uniform motion is relative and there exists no absolute state of rest anywhere in the universe. Nowadays, just like the theory of heliocentricism, Einstein’s theory of relativity is accepted worldwide as gospel truth, even though he himself admitted geocentricism is equally justifiable.
