I'm not sure specifically what you're referring to, sorry 😅 Are you referring to the Kawacy post I made yesterday? I was mostly referring to people who like, create webcomics and OC's that lean into really icky/problematic territory like shipping adults with children, sexualizing children, etc. Not everyone who creates webcomics or OC's does this (obviously) but there are a lot of people who have found ways to normalize predatory behavior through the funnel of "creative expression" taking the form of comics and OC art that they make for others.

Kawacy is a prime example of that, they took two* a canon Sims character (as in, a character who came pre-made in the Sims meaning they're part of "Sims lore") and put them into a creepy relationship in which the vampire raises a human girl from childhood and then starts hooking up with her, basically the exact same shit Twilight got called out for (twice, both with Edward/Bella and Jacob/Renesmee). This sort of shit permeates a lot of media and webcomics/OC creation/digital art are not an exception, is my point. Something something "with great power comes great responsibility", just because you can draw couples who romanticize grooming doesn't mean you should or that it makes it okay lol There's a point where "creative liberty" and "fictional suspension of disbelief" can and does get used as an excuse for predatory nonsense.

Hey this take and the take in the tags of the person I am reblogging this from are maybe understandable if you have only done a do nice things playthrough, but I do think its important to understand that:

Astarion is not sorry if he kills you. He belittles your upset about it and honestly attempts to gaslight you. If you arent killed by him though you wouldn't see this.

He approves when you torture a guy, and its not just he thinks its practical. He specifically only approves when you do the most graphic and brutal option for your second torture check. Most people arent torturing someone in a normal playthrough so also understandable to miss.

Astarion is an abuser and uses his trauma as an excuse to be cruel to others. He is not just uncomfortable because you are putting the party in danger by helping people, he approves when you put the party in danger to do something mean. He actively enjoys cruelty. I love him to death as a character don't get me wrong, this isn't the cancel Astarion post. But I do think this is important to acknowledge if you want to fully understand his character. It is also important to acknowledge this because real people use their trauma to justify abusing others, and recognizing this behavior in fictional characters can help you to protect yourself from others doing this in real life, and to check yourself to make sure you aren't doing it to other people. I think Astarion is a really well written and realistic example of someone doing this, so studying him in this was is really useful.

If you find yourself thinking that it is okay for Astarion to treat others poorly since it is a trauma reaction, I would encourage you to stop and think about why for a while. I am not saying this to be accusatory, I have definately fell into that pattern of thinking before, and it is the reason my abuser was able to control me. He treated me badly because of abuse he went through, every bad thing he ever did I could draw a direct line to bad things that happened to him. So I excused it. But the reality is, that doesn't make it okay.

It doesn't make you a bad person if trauma gives you or gave you the urge to act like this. But you need to recognize it, realize its wrong to do, and work towards getting better. Being hurt is not an excuse to hurt others.
