Saw a post about trying to understand "new player behavior" from a new viewer standpoint and I thought, let me try and take a stab at explaining it. Anyone who's been around for a while and wants to weigh in, please do.

New player mentality is mostly like running from fights instead of taking them especially if you're good enough or have enough hearts, being absolutely unwilling to die, being unwilling to see if you can survive something you know is a trap, refusing to show up to something because you thought it was suspicious, being paranoid when there is nothing to be paranoid about. Trying to defuse conflict instead of embracing it, not understanding the cycles (even though everyone had their own interpretation of the cycles).

These reflect the unspoken gentlemen's code of honor that exist on the server, though it is notable to note that the main players that care about this are just Mapicc Zam and Clown. Not everyone cares about this, though the older the member, generally the more it is understood and accepted.

But with Mapicc and Zam being consistently two of the only handful of active members at any given time, their opinion will ring loud and with Zam being The most active streamer and the one with The most play time every season, as Zam goes so does the audience go. Creating, admittedly, a feedback loop where we all complain about those dang youngins.

However the mentality is real, and some members, most notably Minute, have genuinely changed from how he was at the start of s5 to who he is now. s5 minute would have NEVER taken a 1v1 he knew he would have lost for the sake of the server.

This risky mentality, story-motivated, picking a side and caring deeply about it, showing up to something you know you have a 30% chance of survival, dying and then retaliating against whoever killed you in that thing you just showed up to (this is the easiest explanation of the cycles), picking a nerf and seeing how it will affect the story, loosing all your hearts willingly, saying yes when someone approaches you for a project and putting your all into supporting this new allyship (despite old teammates or despite old feuds), being loyal to the new teammates because progress forward is better than clinging to the past (betrayal in s1-4 is interesting and can be talked about below), coming up with a plot that will involve the whole server at a risk to yourself, achieving the impossible.

These are all hallmarks of the old members.

Now, there is a layer of nuance here because while all new members fall prey to new member mentality, there have always, always been old members who fall prey to it, no matter how long they've been on lifesteal. The easiest example you'd find looking back at s4 is Pangi and Red running from every single fight even though they had 20 hearts. Red being from s1 and rejoining in s3 and Pangi joining in s2! Hardly new members at the time of infraction.

But that's because, at its core, new member mentality is the fear of death. It's the fear of failure. It's clinging to your hearts for fear of what will happen to you if you loose them.

And what each member needs is time, and experience in difficult situations that challenge their perspective on the server. We call that their Lifesteal Trauma. It's never fun for them and it genuinely challenges everything that they thought they understood about lifesteal. And depending on how it happens it either strengthens their bond to the server and shows them they can withstand anything and everything even abject failure and total betrayal and still be okay, or they take a step back from being as active. It's always different for every player and depends on how they even want to play. I could go through the list of members, but it's primarily and internal belief that they don't articulate and every way of playing the server is okay. And mostly they just need time and a new idea to try.

A final note about betrayals. Lifesteal has always, always been filled with people getting on a team and betraying that team to get the win. So many times a member has been invited to a team and they join and then betray that team. So what do I mean about loyalty to a new team over old teams?

This is something that is growing and changing as the server progresses and isn't as clean cut, also maybe wrong because my memory of everything before s4 is the most shoddy, but in general, those who betrayed a new team had been inactive for a period, were approached by a different new team, and then infiltrated the other new team that was forming,

s1 that was terry being on mapicc's side and then conveniently being in the right place to join the other side and betray them.

I remember nothing from s2 other than MOB and the withers.

s3 that was parrot being added to the resistance group chat while being in a call with decimation and betraying the resistance.

s3 that was leo joining the revive side but being on spoke's side and killing zam and pangi right after the successful getaway.

The betrayals of s4 sparked a new brutality (maybe just because i actually watched the streams and the streams of all those older times are lost) where Spoke did the long con on Parrot before betraying, being loyal to the original wormholers over Parrot.

That was mapicc adding zam to his side of the crown battle against pangi and then betraying him after the fight.

Then there's all the zam betrayals which were ideological differences about the purpose and goals of the teams rather than thought out betrayals that he orchestrated with others. (and in a way his choice of leaving team awesome was an experiment in a what-if that was very enticing)

But the time honored old player mentality towards betrayals is "first come first serve" combined with "old attachments don't matter in the face of new content".

This is why ro betraying the foundation in s5 was a pure act of old player mindset. mapicc is asking? bet.

whereas jumper's betrayal was much closer to spoke's betrayal of parrot: clinging to an original (and secret/non official) team over the new teammates and only after months and months, betraying them.

It's a secret third thing that doesn't fit anywhere into how lifesteal functions and is more a facet of the player themself; are they willing to do that plot.

And yet, because i heaven't yapped enough yet, Jumper's betrayal to me reads far closer to new player mentality because she saved her own skin and her own hearts and never risked anything through her betrayal. she has said multiple times that she likes being on both sides because she never has to worry about dying. If she had gotten caught earlier the worst that would have happened is she lost a single heart because they never knew where her bed was and she could have called minute in as backup in an instant and be protected by the most powerful member under his batman wings. and after she was protected by him at all times.

Whereas Spoke's betrayal of Parrot was The Riskiest thing he could have done. He could have been banned from the server and never completed the impossible task he was trying to do. There was real risk to his own ability to play the game in pulling it off successfully.

The warm smiles of the crowds were lit by torches and lanterns. The soothing scent of the sea breeze filled the air. And the beat of bongos and the shake of maracas were in sync with the excitement that thumped in your heart.

“Thank you,” you said as you received the deep red rose you purchased from one of the stands. You wanted to give your sweet soldier a little gift.

“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! The fireworks show will begin shortly. Always remember to have a good time and HANG LOOSE!” announced the host on the loudspeakers.

Your eyes widened.

As you walked briskly along the cobblestone path, a flock of tourists suddenly blocked your way.

You were starting to lose your patience, and all of a sudden, you fell to the ground and dropped the rose. Someone bumped into you and did not bother to apologize. Groaning in pain and annoyance, you noticed the special flower getting stepped on.

“Hey! That’s for Sephi—” You covered your mouth.

Everyone knew who he was—Shinra’s greatest soldier. If he was not loved, then he was envied and feared.

Tonight was special. It was one of the rare times when the two of you could go on a vacation together. It would be quite a shame if you had to share his attention with a few of his admirers. Though you adored how he appreciated his fans, you could not help but want to spend a little time with just the two of you. Despite his seemingly endless number of missions, he tried his best to make time for you. He was utterly devoted to you. Your happiness was his number one mission.

Sometimes, you could not help but wonder why he chose you out of so many, but he was drawn to the way you smiled, the way you called out his name, the way your hand felt in his, and the way you lit up when you talked about your brilliant ideas. He loved how he felt at ease whenever he was with you. You made him feel like he could express his vulnerability freely. You made him feel human. He was filled with great honor to be yours.

Grinning in excitement to see him, you crawled to pick up the rose and regain your composure.

You caught your breath, only to have it taken away again by him.

He was leaning against the railing, arms crossed. His beautiful face was illuminated by the soft light of the moon. The wind blew his long silver hair, making it look like mist in the night. He was not dressed in his usual leather attire and armor. Instead, he wore a loose black long-sleeved cotton shirt. A few of its buttons were open, exposing his bare chest—his signature style. Wistfully, his feline Mako-green eyes gazed at the sky.

He noticed your presence and instantly made his way to you.

“Where have you been? I was just about to go looking for you,” he said, his face and voice expressing his worry.

You brought your hands in front of you and held out the rose to him with the biggest smile on your face.

“Who’s that from?” he asked skeptically, with a hint of jealousy. The sea breeze blew on him again. His hair tousled in the wind as he drew closer to you. His eyes shifted to peer at the rose.

“From me…” you said, quite flustered. There was something about the air that night that made Sephiroth look so serene.

He raised a silver-grey brow and cocked his head.

“To you!” you beamed.

He raised both of his eyebrows and chuckled. His hand flew just below his nose, covering his charming smile.

“Thank you,” he said, smiling at you as he reached out to take the rose.

To your surprise, he gingerly wore the rose on his left ear. The red rose complemented his green eyes perfectly. The greatest war hero, smiling while wearing a flower on his head, truly was a sight to see. He looked angelic, and his appreciation made your cheeks warm up. Being so flustered, before you could react, he reached into his back pocket and said, “I should be giving this to you.”

He had a red rose just for you too. A soft gasp escaped from your lips. You could not contain the joy in your heart.

Smiling, Sephiroth placed the rose on your left ear as well. It was almost like your heart could burst. The two of you were wearing matching roses.

You both walked to the gazebo railing to get a better view of the upcoming fireworks show.

“Thank you, Sephiroth!” you said with great joy.

“You’re welcome.” A hint of red appeared on his cheeks.

So he’s watching this one true crime video, and a lot of the details started sounding mad familiar to me. One thing that was obvious about Y/n was that they were incredibly oblivious and carefree. In times, that was very useful, especially as they were a streamer with a larger fanbase and community. In other times, it wasn’t as.. Helpful. Especially when their best friend of 3 years had a crush on them. And their best friend was indeed, Ranboo. 

Ranboo had always considered themselves a “hopeless romantic”, someone who believes in love no matter what relationships or situations they’ve been through personally. Ranboo always tried to be near y/n, doing at least something with him. He constantly tried to give small little hints to y/n that he had a crush on them, but most of the time, those hints would click inside other people’s brains, and not y/ns, leaving Ranboo to get teased by his friends. He would constantly leave very obvious gestures to y/n, but nothing seemed to work.

During Vidcon panels and restaurants, Ranboo would always sit right next to Y/n, purposely making sure that their hands, legs or arms were touching in some way. If Ranboo, Y/n and some other people were walking to go somewhere, Ranboo would also offer y/n his hand or arm to hold onto, and he would be a blushing and stuttering mess if Y/n accepted. Although, y/n’s oblvious self would assume Ranboo was acting that way because of the weather or some random thing. 

During a convention that Y/n and Ranboo were speaking at together, Ranboo and Y/n hung out backstage along with Wilbur, Tommy and Niki. Tommy and Niki were talking, and Wilbur was grabbing water to drink before the panel. Y/n was scrolling through Twitter, laughing at the tweets in the Twitchcon panel hashtag from the audience. 

“Hey, Y/n, come ‘ere for a second.” Ranboo spoke.

Y/n looked up from their phone and shut it off before shoving it in their pocket. They came a bit closer to Ranboo. “What’s up?” they said.

Ranboo’s cheeks had a bit of a red hue to them, wishing in his head that Y/n couldn’t notice. He reached his hands up into Y/n’s hair, tucking away a few strands behind their ear. Y/n sucked in their breath, and Ranboo swore he saw a bit of tint on Y/n’s ears. 

Ranboo pulled away his hand. “There.” he smiled.

Y/n smiled back at the tall boy in front of them. “T-thank you.”

Wilbur looked over at Ranboo and Y/n, moving his eyes back and forth between the two. He finally settled making eye contact with Ranboo and raised an eyebrow. Ranboo sighed and felt blush rise onto his cheeks once again. He looked back over at y/n quickly, and pulled out his phone.

After the panel, Wilbur and Phil texted Ranboo to come meet them in one of the creator lounges, and I quote reader, “In private.” Usually when Wilbur or Phil say something like that, it’s usually meant as “We need to talk/ask you about something” (it’s worse when it’s both of them say ‘in private’!) 

Ranboo sucked in his breath and headed over to the destination they were supposed to meet at. Ranboo finally got there after 10 minutes of walking, and saw Wilbur leaning against the wall talking to Phil as Phil drank his cup of coffee. 

Ranboo walked over to the two men and cleared his throat. “So, what did you want to ask me.. In private?” Ranboo said.

Wilbur looked over at Phil. “When were you going to tell us that you and Y/n are dating?”

Ranboo’s eyes widened. “U-uh, we’re not dating.” Phil raised an eyebrow.

“I promise you, we’re not together!” Ranboo responded, raising his arms up in defense. 

Phil spoke up. “If you’re always acting like that towards Y/n, and you two aren’t dating, then I assume you have a crush on them, correct?”

Ranboo’s mouth tightened. “You can tell us, you know. We’re basically your family.” Wilbur added, smiling.

Ranboo looked at both of them and sighed. “Yeah, I think I do like them..”  The smile of the two men’s faces could not be wiped off throughout any of that day when Ranboo and Y/n were anywhere near each other.

Reader, ever since that day, when Ranboo was basically forced to tell Phil and Will about his admiration for y/n, let's just say his head was even more filled with thoughts of y/n. Now, before the conversation with Wilbur and Phil, he already was swarmed with thoughts already. But now, it was even more than usual, to the point where he would tell himself to stop and clear his mind a bit before continuing to whatever he was doing. He knew it was a sign to tell y/n, and he finally brought himself to do it.

Ranboo and y/n were walking alone on the Brighton shore, watching the waves crash along the sand and their feet. The sun was slowly setting into a beautiful shade of baby pink and tangerine with the daisy yellow sun painting the horizon.

Ranboo and y/n both stopped in their tracks and sat down on the rocky floors of the shore and admired the beautiful sunset in front of them. Ranboo sighed and looked over at y/n.

"I love you, y/n." Ranboo spit out quickly, almost tripping over their own words. Blush rose to Ranboo's cheeks at what words he spoke, as he meant to say them a little later on in the evening but couldn't hold his tounge back.

Y/n looked over in surprise.

"Shit, I-I. I do love you y/n. Gosh, I just wanna take you anywhere you like, and show you off to everyone, and j-just-." the boy stuttered.

"Want to what?" Y/n said, smiling.

"Please, just let me kiss you."

"Kiss me, then." y/n spoke back.

And they did, reader. They did.

“But on a beach somewhere, you know? Can you imagine? You, me, Cas, toes in the sand, couple of them little umbrella drinks. Matching Hawaiian shirts, obviously,” Dean recommended.

Dean’s heart races with excitement as he pulls into probably the most expensive hotel they’ve ever been in—a hotel with its own beachfront property.

“Oh, yeah,” Dean says, grinning like a cat who got the cream.

Sam and Gabriel pull up beside them, park, and peer at them through the windows.

“All right, gentlemen, let’s unload. I’ll get the room keys,” Dean advised as he walks towards the hotel.

Benny chuckles from the backseat and Cas watches Dean while exiting from the passenger side.

Two doors slam, and Sam and Gabriel get out of their car and stand, waiting.

A few minutes later, Dean rejoins them, flapping two sets of room keys at them. He hands Sam and Gabe theirs—“at the end of the row near the stairwell”—and Cas and Benny theirs, “which is near the elevators. Made sure to get three keys for ours.” They grab their luggage and bags, then head to their rooms.

Benny closes the trunk, finally grabbing his room key from Dean. “Thanks, Cher.”

“Very thoughtful, Dean,” Castiel compliments as he grabs his too.

About twenty minutes later, everyone makes it with their things into their assigned rooms. Sam and Dean text back and forth deciding what to do.

“Ok, we are ordering pizza delivery, and Sam and Gabe are gonna join us here to eat,” advises Dean, sitting at the kitchenette table, having missed Castiel and Benny making out in the bedroom.

“Oh, well,” Dean hastily texts Sam asking if they can delay an hour. Sam readily agrees.

Dean returns to the bedroom, correcting himself, “Make that in an hour.”

The two separate and look at Dean, both their eyes are dilated. Castiel’s cheeks are rosy, and both their lips are swollen from kissing.

“Don’t stop on my account, gentlemen. I am all for a show.” Dean palms his growing erection under his jeans.

“If you’re wanting a show, Beloved,” states Castiel. He pulls Benny back to his lips by his grip on the vampire’s neck. Benny quickly pushes Castiel’s jackets off his arms, and then Castiel, in turn, unbuttons Benny’s light-blue shirt, pushing it off the man’s shoulders. Benny may seem thick but he was all muscle, not overly so. His torso is nicely defined while his abdomen is relatively flat with a bit of pudge that Castiel secretly loves on the vampire. Castiel runs his fingertips down the middle of Benny’s chest and abdomen, then runs his fingertips along his waistband.

Dean begins to strip—taking off both shirts at once—and toes his shoes and socks off. He pulls his belt through the loops, enjoying the show his partners are putting on.

Benny begins unbuttoning Castiel’s shirt and the angel helps, removing it and throwing it on the floor.

Benny chuckles at his haste. “What’s wrong, Angel, impatient?”

Castiel huffs at him, rolling his eyes before smirking.

Dean has always enjoyed Castiel’s body—broad shoulders, well-built with muscled arms and matching pecs. Castiel’s abdomen hints at the muscles underneath that are revealed when he is much more active, especially with those thighs.

Dean whines at the thought, dragging the vampire and angel’s attention back to him.

“Oh, Dean. You’re welcome to join.” Benny pats next to him.

Dean grins and wiggles his eyebrows as he walks over to the king-size bed.

🍍🦀🧽⭐️🦑 ONE HOUR LATER…🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕

Dean lay on the bed on his stomach, typing on his cell. “Order is in. Should be here in less than an hour.”

He texts Sam, relaying the information, and offers for them to join them once the pizza arrives. Sam agrees, leaving everyone in their own room.

Sam sighs, heavily, puts his phone on the nightstand, and flops back on the bed.

“Now, where was I?” Gabriel asks, teasingly.

Sam looks into Gabe’s golden eye with a smile. “Oh, I think I know.” He motions for Gabe to come up to him.

Over the blanket, Gabriel slowly crawls up his human’s tall, lithe form planting kisses along revealed skint.

🍕🍕🍕💋💋💋👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨 FIFTY-TWO MINUTES LATER…

Sam groans and slams his hand down on the nightstand a few times, searching for his phone. He wraps his fingers around it and unlocks the screen. “Pizza is here.”

“Mmmkay,” says Gabe from the bathroom.

Dean grabs plates and opens the three pizza boxes up revealing the meat lover’s, pure veggie, and pepperoni. Dean grabs a few slices of the meat lover’s and sits on the bed, flipping channels, finding something to watch. Castiel and Benny are cleaning up and making sure Benny gets fed… in the shower.

“Ha ha! Die Hard. Yes!” Dean punches the air and grabs a slice, taking a large bite.

Castiel and Benny join a few minutes later, dressed, and Castiel grabs a slice of each pizza while Benny gets everyone beers from the fridge.

“Thanks, man,” Dean thanks and plants a peck on the vampire’s cheek before he sits down.

Sam munches on his veggie pizza as Gabriel changes his slices into dessert pizzas.

“Gabe,” warns Sam.

Gabriel grunts and snaps, changing them back. He pouts and picks up the pepperoni slice then bites. He hums in surprise at how tasty it is.

Dean sloppily bites into his pieces, absorbed in the movie. Sam watches Dean watching the TV with a small smile. Gabriel sits between Sam’s legs trying to understand the entertainment value of the violent movie. Benny is cuddled up to Castiel’s side as Castiel’s thigh steadily touches Dean’s, despite Dean leaning forward in his enthrallment.

“Look, look, look.” Dean points at the screen as his favorite quote is about to be said.

Dean says in unison with John McClane, “Yippee-Ki-Yay, Motherfucker.” He laughs, then takes a swig of his beer.

Gabriel and Sam exchange a smile and look, then return to watching the TV.

As the credits rolled, Sam closes the veggie pizza and picks it up. “I’ll take this with me.”

“Good idea,” agrees Castiel.

Sam nods and heads out the room door, followed by Gabriel who winks before closing the door.

Dean stretches and yawns.

Benny wraps his arms around Dean’s waist and nuzzles into the back of his neck with a hum.

“Dude, beach, sun, ocean.”

Benny grins into Dean’s skin and kisses him. “Ok, Cher.”

Dean turns around in Benny’s arms, taking his face into his hands before pressing his lips against Benny’s. The vampire tilts his head and deepens the kiss with an appreciative hum before pulling away. “Love you, Dean.”

“Love you too, man.”

☀️🕶️🧴🌊 THE NEXT MORNING…

After breakfast and two cups of coffee for Dean, the five head to the nearby beach. Dean had bought everyone matching Hawaiian shirts and themed swim trunks before the trip. Somehow, he got everyone’s sizing correct. He loves it and demands a group selfie in front of Baby with everyone before they step on the sand with their cooler of goodies.

As Benny, Cas, and Dean lay out on their towels, they discover there is a cute little food hut a few hundred feet away, and when lunch rolls around, Sam and Gabe take everyone’s orders. It takes about half an hour before they return with the food and drinks. The seafood meals are delicious and hit the spot.

The tide comes in, so Dean finally gets into the water as he body surfs the waves. Benny and Castiel start splashing each other and when they get tired of it, they gang up on Dean who nearly drowns from being bombarded with ocean water before he can escape on land. Sam busts out laughing at their antics and makes sure Gabriel sees,

Gabe thinks it is so funny, that he thinks of joining them. Sam declines, “Oh no. I’d like to breathe air for a little bit longer than drown by splashing, Honey.”

Gabriel purses his lips, furrows his brows, and crosses his arms. Sam grins and shakes his head. “No,” he states firmly.

“Fi-i-ine,” breathes the Archangel. He gets up and goes to join the vampire and his little brother in the water as Dean goes to lay on his towel in the sun to dry off. Sam hands him an ice-cold water bottle from their cooler.

“Thanks.”

“‘Course.”

The Winchester brothers watch their partners play in the ocean.

“This is the best, Sammy.”

“It was a great idea, Dean.”

“Just needs some drinks with little umbrellas and we’re set,” contemplates Dean.

Sam smirks. “I’ll be right back.”

Dean lays back and waits in the shade of their beach umbrella.

A few minutes later, Sam returns with a mai tai and a piña colada, both with little luau-themed umbrellas just inside the large plastic cups. “Which one?” He asks Dean.

Dean sits up, eyes wide, and takes a moment to decide. He grabs the mai tai and sips on it, humming his approval.

Sam smiles and sits back down next to his brother on his own towel. “This is the best, Jerk.”

Dean grins. “Yep. Yes, it is, Bitch.”

They both chuckle and sip their drinks.

Jaune was a streamer, going by the name: Crescent Knight. And, today he was playing a relaxing game of, ‘Shadows of Doubt.’

Jaune: Okay… Fingerprints collected. Addresses collected. Any, and all information on the victim has been collected, and yet we have no clue who murdered this poor sod.

GoldenDragon: It was the butler!

RedReaper: No, it was the maid!

Jaune: I don’t think there is a maid, or a butler character in the game. You two.

GoldenDragon: I can dream, Harold!

Jaune: Hehe~! That you can. Ahh, my characters hungry. Lets see, what we should have today…?
