Saiyuki Reload -Zeroin- 04

I’m still surprised how it’s just episode 4 yet it feels like I’ve been watching this for longer. A lot of stuff is happening and it’s so good! The OP and ED is starting to grow on me but I still love the Gensoumaden Saiyuki OP/EDs and the ones from Blast.

Anyways, I saw from the comments from manga readers/anime watchers of Reload that this arc already diverged from how things went in the anime original version of it. I’m kinda excited even if I didn’t see the anime original cause they seem real excited, too.

They do know each other!!

Yeah, the info about the sutras probably came from Ukoku. Gato doesn't know Ukoku though and it's their first time meeting. Hazel explains that when he was a kid, he met Ukoku and Ukoku was the one to teach him about other continents and all that. Ukoku is also friends with Hazel’s master, Bishop Filbert.

Meanwhile, the guys are surrounded by demons. Again. They're close to the town and one of the townspeople tells the group to just get in past the gate and not bother fighting the demons. Surprisingly, the demons couldn't enter! The town is protected by some holy power, apparently, because of a guy called Lord Soushin.

The group is skeptical though as Gojyo, Hakkai, and Goku were able to pass without issues although Sanzo says that maybe it's cause the trio aren't fully demons or the barrier isn't that strong. The latter explanation makes no sense though.

Hakkai asks an admittedly very late question about what the scriptures are. Sanzo gives these few info about the Founding Scriptures of Heaven and Earth (lore time!):

-Only those who hold the title of Sanzo (and their successors) are told of important info about the sutras.

-There are five sutras for each of the five Sanzo priests to protect - Maten, Seiten, Uten, Muten, and Kouten.

-Each scripture has it's own power. Genjo Sanzo's Maten Sutra is able to banish evil. (He also owns the Seiten Sutra but it was stolen and is currently in the hands of the enemy)

-Each sutra is powerful on their own but together, they could apparently do something more powerful. For one, the scriptures are apparently involved in the creation of the world (hence they’re called “founding scriptures”).

-This is why the Sanzo priests, along with their scriptures, aren't together in one place - to prevent all of the sutras being taken away all at once and so that all five can’t be activated at once.

These two are still hanging out together. They talked Bishop Filbert cause Ukoku had just learned of the guy's death when Hazel told him (I doubt that). Hazel gets a bit of flashback about his childhood when his master was still alive. He also says some info on how his master died: while Bishop Filbert is powerful, he's also kind and he got killed the moment he let his guard down. It's why Hazel is the way he is now - no hesitation when dealing with demons and is extremely against them.

But it seems meeting Sanzo's group has made him have doubts about his belief. Hehehe that’s what happens when you meet the protagonists.

Ukoku asked what happened to the monster that killed the bishop and Hazel said it must've ran away. Hazel also doesn't remember much of that time with his memories being fuzzy (hmm... suspicious). He does remember the monster being super powerful though.

I don’t usually see demons in Saiyuki turn into monster form (cause they usually just look human with demon features) so whenever Hazel called them “monsters”, I assumed it was cause he hated them or they’re really that bad where they live. I didn’t think it’s cause he’s seen them in monster form.

Ukoku, the fucking bastard, tells Hazel that there's a powerful monster in Shangri-la, too. And then he proceeds to mention the Seiten Taisei. Don't drag Goku into this! He's nice and he's being taken care of.

Ugh... I guess the ikkou and Hazel will have to face off again cause of this! I was hoping they could be friends. I was starting to like Hazel, too.

The gang is unaware of the talk between Hazel and Ukoku but the Sanzo-ikkou is dealing with another asshole. This Lord Soushin that made the barrier wants to meet them! Lord Soushin came to the town and set up his barrier which got him elected as their leader. The group was polite but they are suspicious of the man since it didn't seem like he noticed three of four guests of his are demons.

(I thought the guy was dead and the whole barrier set-up thing happened like, many, many years ago or something lol)

Oh... suspicious activities indeed! Lord Soushin knows the demons and is a fake! He and the demons have a deal - Lord Soushin providing the food and gold for the demons in exchange for them playing along with the whole "barrier" thing.

The group is enjoying the town's festival (although Sanzo decided to go back to the inn as this isn't his thing). Then the trio came across this. The townspeople are using the demons as some kind of entertaining freakshow. These demons are kids, too.

This is messed up and I actually sorta wished the guys saved the demons (although part of me also hoped they do it another time cause they’d get in trouble).

The trio isn't happy with this at all, of course, but before they could do anything, something made them unconscious.

Sanzo gets lured to where Lord Soushin is when he was told about what happened to the others. Sanzo then falls down a trapdoor to some kind of underground passageway where the demons are waiting for him. Sanzo already guessed what was going on but this just proves it.

The trio found themselves imprisoned and to be used as "offering" to the demons. They're gonna try and escape though (Hakkai knows how to pick locks!).

Sanzo is doing the same but on his own against many demons. He gets a little flashback of when he was younger going on his journey alone before he met the others. There’s a short scene of him putting the gun to his head, too (if I remember correctly, he picked a small gun as a weapon just in case he wants to uh, give up).

But unlike then, he's much stronger now.

The trio gotta deal with the fake bastard on their way. The man admits that travelers who end up in their city are also turned into offerings to the demons. The three tried to escape but the townspeople stop them cause as it turns out, hey were all aware of the cleric being a fake but the entire thing works out for them anyways and they wanna keep it that way. The townspeople are on the cleric's side and are willing to fight the trio. Even Lord Soushin was surprised at this turn of events.

Just as things are getting dire (as the gang doesn’t want to kill humans), Sanzo arrives and walks towards his group. Lord Soushin is again surprised when he sees Sanzo alive even though heavily injured. Sanzo tells the guy that he’s not gonna give up and will continue on.

The townspeople then let him and the others leave in peace (I kind of and kind of not understand why, honestly). I don’t think the townspeople are like, evil, but they’re just desperate (and also kind of assholes).

No word yet if Ukoku and Hazel’s pendant have any connection but the two know each other and Ukoku probably knows about the pendant anyways. Hazel is totally the “angel” Ukoku was referring to earlier. (and yeah, I’ll be switching from calling him “Ukoku” and “Dr. Ni” depending on what his appearance is currently)

I actually don’t hate Hazel as much anymore since the two groups seem to have gotten into an understanding last time. Much more so now that Hazel admits that meeting Sanzo and the others have influenced him. He’s not bad, he’s just too extreme. Gato is also nice. The two groups fighting again might be inevitable with Ukoku now making his move and influencing stuff.

Aaaah I want them to be friends!

Subject change but I was surprised as well when the townspeople revealed that they knew from the start that everything was a ruse. On the other hand, it makes sense they knew cause there’s no way everyone would be stupid enough to believe in a lie like this for a long time with no questions asked. They’re desperate in a world where it’s difficult to survive. I would’ve understood them more if they didn’t willingly hunt and hurt child demons for entertainment cause that’s just sick.

Hakkai mentioned when they escaped their cell that he actually studied lock picking (like he went to learn it from someone). It’s funny but it makes me wonder what he must be thinking to want to learn it in the first place.

Seeing flashbacks of Sanzo’s past as a teenager is always kinda sad but also it makes me appreciate the moments he has with his group. Especially Goku who he meets first. I have some thoughts on this and Gaiden but I probably should make another post someday about that.

Another stinger scene! Hazel has been told of what the Seiten Taisei is and where he might be found. Hazel is now on his way to find out the truth.

I guess this means there’s hope cause Hazel isn’t just gonna take Ukoku’s words at face value and will do research himself (I wish people on the internet did this, we have google). Plus, he’s met Goku already! He even called Goku by name! They know the kid is nice, right?

(Also, they don’t know this with Goku’s memories locked away but Goku’s backstory is actually somewhat similar to both Sanzo’s and Hazel’s and I’m annoyed that they couldn’t bond over that!)

Anyways, will Goku go Seiten Taisei mode this arc, I wonder? That’d be cool cause Goku going berserk when his friends (especially Sanzo) is badly hurt is always nice hehe but also it would show Hazel that Sanzo’s got this. Sanzo could handle Goku so nothing bad would happen.

I wonder how and when they’d meet Ukoku though? I’m still excited for it! Especially since Ukoku is trying to get Goku in danger cause the other guys (especially Sanzo) would not be happy about that. (I really like friendship moments like this, okay?)

How to Watch Saiyuki

A masterpost by me, because I love four (4) dumb boys.

What is Saiyuki?

Saiyuki, by Kazuya Minekura, is a long-running manga and anime series extremely loosely based on the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, in which a priest (Genjo Sanzo) and his three demon pals (Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai) go on a long and meandering journey across China to get to India and stop the resurrection of a powerful demon king. With lots of action, angst, and comedy, this is a great series if you like classic anime and your favorite character type is Jerk With A Heart of Gold Who Secretly Really Loves His Friends.

The manga was first published in 1997, and was followed by 2 prequel and 2 sequel manga series (the second of which, Saiyuki Reload Blast, is still publishing, albeit very slowly due to the author’s health issues),as well as 5 separate anime series, a movie, 2 OVAs, 3 stage plays, several audio CDs, and 2 video games. While this guide will only be addressing the anime/OVAs, I highly recommend the manga if you want a more cohesive plot, though admittedly the art style is a bit rough in the beginning.

Content warnings:

Violence/gore: the first anime series has slain enemies dissolve into glitter (I’m not kidding), but the rest go full-bloody, some more than others.

Torture/imprisonment

Incest: stated outright in Gojyo’s backstory (between his step-mother and half-brother, and depicted as a really bad thing), and implied in Hakkai’s (accidental on both their parts, and outright stated in the manga)

Pedophilia: not actually depicted, but used as an insult in Sanzo’s backstory (regarding his teacher/guardian), and very rarely used the same way toward his relationship with Goku.

Suicide/self-harm

Rape (mentioned, not shown)

Child abuse/endangerment

As a general rule, if anything from anyone’s backstory upsets you, keep in mind that the series as a whole brings up their backstories constantly, so you will be seeing those things a lot.

What should you watch?

The various anime adaptations vary greatly in animation style and budget--which means honestly some of it is awful, animation-wise. That’s just how it is. In total, there’s well over 100 episodes, including the movie, but good news! A lot of it is filler and therefore skippable! I’ve provided links to a fan wiki for information on which episodes are filler and which ones correspond to events and plots in the manga.

My recommendations are as follows:

Gensoumaden Saiyuki: 50 episodes, made in 2000 but looks like it was made in the 80s. Watching the first 12 episodes will give you an introduction to who the characters are, what they’re doing, who the main antagonists are, and get you through the first mini-boss arc. After that, only 9 of the remaining 38 episodes aren’t filler, and while some of the filler is enjoyable, a lot of it is just stupid. The final boss of the series does address some of the prequel events (Saiyuki Gaiden, see below), but is ultimately an OC created only for this series (with the creator’s approval), with no bearing on the overall plot. You can skip the rest without missing much.

Saiyuki: Requiem: movie. If you really liked all the Gensoumaden filler and also enjoy dark-as-fuck lighting, go ahead and watch this. Otherwise don’t bother.

Saiyuki Reload: 25 episodes, 12 of which are filler. Watch as much of this as you want! The overall animation and filler quality is much better than Gensoumaden, and there are funny omakes called Urasai! at the end of each episode.

Saiyuki Reload Gunlock: 26 episodes, most of which are filler. This series tries to do the Reload manga plot that was missed in the first Reload anime, but fails to do it any justice whatsoever, and also somehow has worse animation than Gensoumaden. Honestly you can just skip this one.

Saiyuki Reload: Burial: 3-episode OVA. Watch all three! I honestly love this OVA. The episodes are all prequels--the first is a bit long and shows how both Genjo Sanzo and Ukoku Sanzo became Sanzo priests, the second shows Sanzo finding and freeing Goku, and the third covers Hakkai moving in with Gojyo.

Saiyuki Gaiden: 3-episode OVA. Also a prequel, this covers the events 500 years before the series that led to Goku’s imprisonment. If your favorite character is Goku, every part of this will hurt you. It’s a beautiful OVA, but unless you already have a general understanding of the plot, either from reading the Gaiden manga, watching the second half of Gensoumaden, or watching Blast (see below), the pacing might be too fast. Definitely watch it, but perhaps after Blast if it seems confusing.

Saiyuki Reload Blast: 12 episodes. Watch the whole thing! This came out in 2017 and the animation and overall quality is awesome. It doesn’t quite finish the series, but finally jumps the boys up to their final destination, where the manga is slowly but surely wrapping up. Most of the important Gaiden plot details are covered in this series as well.

Saiyuki Reload: Zeroin: (ongoing at time of writing) Watch the whole thing! This one premiered in 2022 and is finally giving the Reload manga arc the justice it deserves. It’s beautiful, using an animation style similar to Blast, and contains a lot of the moments that made me love this series and these stupid asshole boys so much.

And there you have it! If you get through this list and find that you want more of the Sanzo party, then congratulations, it’s time to go back and watch all of that filler you skipped, hooray! (and godspeed).
