I've read a lot of Genshin fanfics in Wattpad and these are the ones i highly recommend to read (if you're into x reader)

Warning: there might be mature stuff in these fanfics so just take a look at the description before reading it.

So, talking about Aether since I saw that you seem to like him a lot, I came on anonymous anyway because I have the wrong account at the moment. Anyway, let's go

I imagine he was the first to discover the player's existence, because the player is always connected with Aether, controlling him as if he were your puppet. At first, it's scary to think that a strange being may be controlling him and that it can lead him to death at any second, even if in Teyvat he somehow revives, it's still terrifying. However, are you helping him? Why are you helping him in the first place?

Aether hates to admit it, but after spending the entire Mondstadt mission, he likes to hear your voice and your complaints when he loses the 50/50, it's just funny. Aether can hear you now, he also hears and witnesses all the compliments you give to other characters, it's really cute; but hearing compliments also means listening to curses, (if you're a person who curses a lot, he learned new curses to defend himself when you're offline), he finds it funny when you start talking bad about the Npcs who don't stop talking for a second, even Aether got tired! Just stop talking and gid the mission soon! I want my primogems!!!

Aether feels on his skin, several times, what it's like to be exchanged, when you get your first 5 star, he's happy to have a partner, but hey, why did you take him out of the team?

Is he weak? Isn't he the meta?! What does that even mean?!

Aether is stuck in his thoughts, he only returns to your screen when some conversation or fight scene appears that has to be with him. But, Aether is hurt and doesn't understand why, he should be happy that your team is stronger! Not mad or upset...

His damage increases considerably and the 5-star characters come with more difficulty, first, he thought you didn't like characters who use sword, but you were looking for Furina?! Why her?! Is it because she's Hydro? He's Hydro too, look! Use him… Please...

The traveler is placed on the team again, you were testing the new powers he had gained in Liyue. Aether had almost forgotten how good it was to be praised for the new skills, and remember that I mentioned about his damage increasing? Aether will make his life goal: having higher damage and more utility for you!

Aether loves your concern for the journey and loves it when you get angry when he helps an entire nation to receive no information from his sister. You care about him... you’re so cute!

Before, it was cute to hear you gush with compliments and love songs for other characters, however, at this moment it is simply suffocating. Aether has to listen to you don't stop praising every sentence said by Xiao, and he's already losing his patience, especially with you seeing Xiao and him as a couple, how dare you?! His heart belongs to the person who helped him from the beginning!

Aether gets harsher and ruder with the characters you praise and- wait, what do you mean... getting married?! Excuse me?! You can't marry them!!!!

The traveler knows that you are the player, but he can also confuse it with a god, anyway, he wants you in Teyvat or enjoy the beautiful things of your world. Aether wants to hold your hand and be affectionate, he wants to tell all the love he feels. If you isekai in Teyvat, expect a room being made with a lot of love and affection, Aether calling you to be his new partner on trips and a very, very protective Aether, especially if he sees you embarrassed or interested in some character.

In case he stops in your world, Aether is taking the opportunity to hug you and he is even calmer, Hey, no rivals!!! He will stay in your house and God bless you if his divinity is already dating, because or 1. Bye bye gf/bf or 2. If the person break your heart, Aether makes this guy's life hell and, bye bye!

I want to talk about Paimon now, she will probably be the one who will notice Aether's change faster since she is always close to him. The giggles he gives when he is alone, his training getting heavier and heavier and the change of attitude when he talks to a character.

An example of queercoding in Alhaitham and Kaveh's relationship: Madam Faruzan edition

Due to the rules in place for game development in China, the possibility for queer confirmation within Genshin Impact is denied, which therefore renders the usage of characters alluding to the potential romantic connection between two same-sex characters as impossible. However, the same insinuation can be made by omitting specific language which strictly conveys romantic sentiments, such as ‘couple’. Instead, the idea of secrecy or something unmentionable can be drawn upon as indicators, as this draws parallels to the taboo of homosexuality practiced within certain cultures and media forms, which the real world audience can identify.  

For example, Alhaitham and Kaveh as secret housemates. This can be used to convey an idea of ‘taboo’ as Kaveh desires to protect his reputation by concealing his shame of having to live with Alhaitham. In-game, the context here is that Kaveh wants to uphold his reputation of a successful architect, but within Alhaitham’s Story Quest, upon the player’s discovery of Kaveh living with Alhaitham, this context is omitted for some time. This prompts Paimon to question what exactly Alhaitham and Kaveh’s relationship is, with Kaveh denying that the two used to be friends but are not anymore: “I wouldn’t say ‘friends’ exactly”.

This tactic of double entendre can be seen again in A Parade of Providence when Paimon almost reveals Kaveh’s living situation to Faruzan.

Faruzan’s can be observed to resort to a thinking pose, in comparison with Layla, when Alhaitham is mentioned in relation to Kaveh wanting to buy property, as Paimon almost ‘outs’ the truth, that Kaveh resides with Alhaitham.

She then seemingly dwells upon the subject, as she returns to it after Kaveh requests for a change of topic later in the conversation. Here, Faruzan follows up on whether Kaveh lives alone, which he fails to deny. 

Here, it can be seen that she has already began associating Kaveh and Alhaitham, possibly speculating that the two live together. When Kaveh fails to supply an answer, therefore not denying her theory, she explicitly ties the two together, and asks if the two are “hiding” something.  

This question evokes a physical reaction from Kaveh, as he denies this question out of fear of being revealed, with Paimon opting to leave in order to cover her role in revealing Kaveh’s predicament.  

A deliberate potentiality has been created here in regard to what Faruzan has inferred, as her phrasing of “are you two hiding something from me?” is non-specific. Rather than asking: “are you two living together?”, she asks a question which holds multiple connotations. Due to the ambiguity of her meaning, her question can be observed as a non-explicit version of the: “are you two a couple?” question.

On the surface, this question is a reference to their situation as roommates, however, her phrasing is non-specific, and hints to another cause for “hiding” something. For Faruzan, Kaveh’s blatant evasion of the topic and dismissal of Alhaitham’s name, could easily be inferred as “hiding” a romantic connection – which is something that the player, too, can pick up on from her gesture of suspicion, her inquisitive questioning, and her excitement when piecing together the clues. The ambiguity of her question generates multiple meanings as to why she has surmised the two could be “hiding”.  

This overt secrecy in Kaveh’s living with Alhaitham, another man, prompts the player to generate associations between this in-game secrecy and real world queer shame. In this, there is an implication of the need for Kaveh to confirm the status of his relationship between him and Alhaitham. Not only does this scene connotate an ‘outing’, in which a queer character has their queerness forcibly revealed to a heteronormative audience, but this creates a sense of secrecy, which, again, can be interpreted by the player as ‘taboo’.  

Kaveh does not want to tell anyone of his living situation out of preserving his stellar reputation, however, Faruzan is missing this context. She relates Alhaitham and Kaveh together in the phrasing “you two”, coupling them together in a secret that they “hid[e]”. The player understands this as indicating to their living situation, however, this creates a separate context which Faruzan has interpreted and that, we, as the audience are not privy to, but can interpret based on her allusions to cohabitation between two men being a secret.

Whilst this is not explicitly romantic within Genshin’s world of nameless sexuality, Faruzan’s ambiguous questioning here draws parallels between real world understanding of sexuality and the connotations of queerness which stems from two men living together in secret.

Tears of Themis and why you should play it

Tears of Themis is a mobile otome game from the company HoYoverse/MiHoYo who brought us the games many know and love: Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Honkai Impact 3rd and Zenless Zone Zero.

Tears of Themis was released in China in 2020. The game has 4 male leads. The game is a romance game with crime solving elements and is set in the fictional city Stellis in the year 2030. You play as a junior attorney MC who has the code name Rosa (her real name is customisable) and with the MLs you work together to solve crimes and mysteries.

Both the story and characters are extremely well written and it’s a breath of fresh air compared to other otome games. The story is fun, romantic and thrilling. There are times where you will kick your feet in excitement, gripping your phone in suspense and other times where you will shed tears. The game explores multiple romantic genres/tropes and its psychological elements are interesting. It’s a game for both experienced otome players and those who are new to the genre. It is free to play and it’s rather easy to obtain the story cards you want.

The MC is kind, empathetic, stubborn and intelligent, in other words quite likeable. She is a true girlboss.

The first male lead/love interest you met is Artem Wing, a 29 year old senior lawyer and MC’s partner. He is a calm man who works hard towards his goals. The media calls him an emotional less robot, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. With his sometimes awkward demeanour when it comes to his crush (MC) is rather charming.

The second male lead/love interest you met is Luke Pearce, a 24 year old private detective and the owner of an antique shop. He is what one could call a golden retriever with his playful personality and his overprotectiveness over the MC who is his childhood best friend. His enthusiasm is a very likeable trait and it’s easy to get attached to him.

The third male lead/love interest you met is Vyn Richter, the 27 year old famed psychiatrist with two doctor grades and a mysterious past. His intelligence is remarkable and he is a master with his words. Vyn is man of many talents and he is always looking for a way to impress MC. He is rather cunning and has an enigmatic aura which draws you in.

The fourth and last male lead/love interest you met is Marius Von Hagen, the 21 year old heir of a multibillion company and an art student. He is what you may call a playboy with his teasing personality and his charming appearance. He is as all the other love interests extremely intelligent. He loves teasing the MC and it’s hard to say no to his puppy eyes.

The game play

The game consists of a main story with multiple chapters and side stories with the different characters. There are also events.

In order to unlock the different episodes you battle with cards which you can obtain by “pulling”. The SR and SSR cards each have their own stories. The card battles are easy to get the hang of.
