Taking you out on a date ||| Genos, Garou, Metal bat
Appreciation post for the teen trio of opm 🤭
She/her pronouns used!
Requests are open anytime <3
Genos
Tumblr media
“I apologize, I must have disappointed you.”
Poor boy literally spent DAYS analyzing your likes and dislikes in order to take you out to the perfect date, as you both made plans to go out on the weekend.
He spent so much time trying to sort out potential places to go that he ended up with nothing on the day you both wanted to go out.
He stood there, in front of your door about to pick you up, with the guiltiest expression on his face. (Well as guilty as a cyborg can look, ykwim)
says sorry for about 100 times before he shuts his mouth. You literally have to stop him mid sentence for his explanations to end.
“IT’S OKAY- you could have just asked me where i want to go instead of making it so hard for you. I like Aquariums, why don’t we go there?”
“Oh.”
Feels like the most stupid (person) in the world at that moment. Had he known it was this easy, he probably wouldn’t have gone through such lengths. (He would have. Cuz boy doesn’t realize that he’s in love with you.)
Usually Genos is pretty blunt and forward, i guess that’s why trying to come up with something was so hard for him. For the first time, trying to ask you directly didnt cross his mind, as he wanted to make you happy all by himself.
You both spent the rest of the day at the aquarium, with you admiring the sea animals, and him admiring you. He realized after a while that his gaze was stuck on you, and definitely made a mental note to ask dr. Kuseno if there was something wrong in his system.
EVERY TIME YOU MENTIONED THAT AN ANIMAL LOOKED CUTE, HE PAMPERED YOU WITH INFORMATION ON THAT SPECIFIC ANIMAL.
Like the tension would be all romantic, you’d be looking at glowing jellyfish, and he’d be staring at you, smiling a tinsy bit. Then you’d say something like “look Genos! That jellyfish looks so cute!” And the next second, Genos would turn into a search engine.
“That’s an Aequorea victoria, also sometimes called the crystal jelly. It’s a bioluminescent hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusa. It can be found off the west coast of North America. The species is best known as the source of aequorin, and green fluorescent protein-“
“Okay- thats enough genos.”
All in all, it would be a pretty fun date! Genos would end the day by saying “I really enjoyed going out with you, Y/N-san. Next time I will take you out to someplace even better. No mistakes allowed.”
Garou
Tumblr media
“What are you looking at? Don’t you like it?”
Guy heard “let’s go on a date!” And rolled with it.
Though his idea of a “date” might look a bit different.
100 percent took advantage of it when you said “let’s go somewhere you like”
So of course y’all ended up in an all you can eat buffet.
And he won’t be paying for it 💀 (the fee might look a “bit” expensive, make sure you take a good amount of money with you)
Chugs down a plate after the other, so at least the money isn’t wasted.
Once he sees your kind of upset face, he stops taking bites of that real good steak and looks at you confused.
You were happy to spend time with him, you really were, But this just wasn’t what you thought it out to be. Of course you expected it to be at least a LITTLE romantic, even though he wasn’t your boyfriend yet, nor did he know that you liked him.
But sorry to disappoint you, romance is a foreign word for this oblivious man.
If you tell him how you feel about the date though, he’ll give you the widest smirk “you’re happy to spend time with me?” Completely ignoring everything else you said
Once y’all are done eating, he’ll make sure to walk you home, if you’re cold he’ll even hold you. So that’s at least something ?
You have to be REALLY forward and blunt with him, or else all he’ll do is tease you.
If you really wanna make him blush just straight up hold his hand, he won’t do nun. Yelling at you or hurting you is an absolute no for him.
Metal bat
Tumblr media
“My sister suggested this place, ya like it?”
Metal bat pretty much has all the knowledge he needs when it comes to girls, as he has to take out and hang out with his little sister a lot.
Most of the time it’s shopping malls where his sister drags him from shop to shop for hours.
So like once they were both shopping for a cute little bag because Zenko had won a piano competition and big brother was proud asf 🤭 and ofc she had realized that he’d be mentioning this one girl from time to time.
“Big bro, why don’t you just take her out on a date?”
But like, we’re talking about a little kid here, so her advice may not be as fitting 😭 she literally only gave him tips on where SHE would like to go.
“If I were her I’d love to be taken to an amusement park, and then he should win me a big unicorn plushy !”
But Metal bat loves his sister more than anything, AND he has 2 brain cells so ofc he’d listen to her, thinking it’d be the best date idea.
A couple days later (he especially took a day off from work for you and told the HQ that they shouldnt call him even if there’s an emergency) he takes you out saying it’s a “surprise”, but once you both stand in front of the amusement park, your reaction isn’t quite what he expected.
It was an kids amusement park. ALL of the rides were fit in for children.
You were happy of course, but metal bat expected you to be fawning over him by now. (That’s what zenko at least told him. Quoting “she’ll be head over heels once you both arrive big brother!”)
“Why are we at an kids amusement park ?”
“My sister recommended it”
“…”
“…”
“Makes sense.”
Well you both already got tickets so all you could do was make the best out of it.
At least the food was good! Metal bat bought you candied apples, chocolate strawberries, cotton candy, everything you laid your eyes on.
And he got you lots of plushies, like, LOTS of plushies.
The kids there did recognize Him tho, so it took a while to get away from the crowd of children wanting autographs and photos.
Metal bat ends up feeling like he ruined your date, so you can see him being kinda upset, after cheering him up though, you both promise to go to a place that both of you could enjoy next time.
He literally has to hold himself back not to spit out the words “i love you” cuz you looked so adorable on that day. (Especially eating the cotton candy)

sent to save me | sidney crosby (ch. 1)
Tumblr media
series masterlist
summary: sid meets nikita’s best friend and runs into a ghost from the past
warnings: none! :)
author’s note: hello! sooooooooo I have probably a million other things to do/write but this came to me and I knew I needed to write it. this is going to be a series and will probably be a lot angstier than my vegas series. I have some ideas for what’s going to happen and I can’t wait to share them with y’all!! anyways I hope yall enjoy this!
xoxo
nina
(ps - title is from ‘always been you’ by shawn mendes)
It starts off innocently enough. He’s at Geno’s for dinner like he does once a week. Nikita is babbling away next to him about everything he’s learning in first grade.
“And Mrs. Riley is super nice and I get to sit next to Vivie who always shares her fruit snacks,” Nikita says all of this at a speed that Sid can barely comprehend but he simply nods at his godson.
“Always with Vivie,” Anna coos as she ruffles Nikita’s hair, her other hand coming to rest against her swollen belly. “Attached at the leg you two.”
Sid chuckles and gently corrects Anya which has her rolling her eyes as she squeezes his arm. Being with his best friend and his family made going home to an empty house hard, but Sid knew he wouldn’t trade his weekly dinners at the Malkin house for anything.
“Vivie is my best friend in the whole world,” Niki rambles on as he runs out of the room. He comes back with a picture frame and shows it proudly to Sid. “This is us at science camp over the summer.”
Sid’s brows furrow as soon as he looks at the photo. The little girl with her arm wrapped around Nikita is a bit shorter than him, dirty blonde hair pulled back into braids. Her big brown eyes are staring up at the camera, upturned nose and gap toothed grin framed with freckles and a set of dimples. Sid stares at the photo for probably a bit too long, the little girl looking somehow familiar even though he knows he’s never met her.
“Nice picture Niki,” Sid smiles when he finally tears his eyes away from the frame. Anya is watching him carefully but doesn’t say anything as Nikita begins talking about how much he loves math.
The rest of the night is uneventful, Geno’s steak and potatoes going over well with everyone at the table. If he and Anya notice that Sid is quieter than usual they don’t say anything to him. It’s not until he’s playing outside with Nikita after dinner that Sid catches his friends whispering to each other as they wash dishes.
When he gets home later Sidney doesn’t even take his shoes off before he’s walking down the hallway to his study. The photo album is tucked into the farthest bookshelf, the dark leather binding helping it to blend in. But he knows exactly where it is, exactly what it feels like in his hands. He pulls it off the shelf and holds it for a moment before opening it to the first page.
‘To Sidney, the love of my life. Happy anniversary babe!
xoxo A’
The handwriting is loopy and decidedly womanly. He traces his fingers over the words reverently before flipping the page. Sid’s breath hitches as his eyes lock on the photo there. Blonde hair, shining green eyes, and a dimpled smile so wide he still sees it every once in a while when he closes his eyes.
There’s a part of him that wants so badly to flip through every page, to take in the smiling woman on the pages and the version of himself that seems to have faded without her. Instead he closes the photo book, shelving it again before he goes out to the living room and pours himself a glass of scotch.
“Why the hell am I still here if you can’t make me a priority Sidney?”
“I’m trying! Don’t you see that? But I also have a team to think about, a whole fucking franchise riding on my shoulders! Don’t they matter too?”
The night and all of his regrets replayed in Sid’s head often. Annie’s tear soaked face, the words they both carelessly yelled at each other. His front door slamming, her things gone from his house by the time he came back from his next road trip.
He’d wanted Annie and hockey, wanted her to see that he was trying to make them both a priority but it hadn’t been enough for her. He hadn’t been enough for her.
And in the end none of it had mattered because three weeks after their argument Sid had shattered his knee in what would be his last game as a Penguin.
Yeah he missed hockey, but he missed Annie Wright more than anything else.
+
A week later Anna’s water breaks in the middle of the night. Sidney drives over and crashes on Geno’s couch as they head to the hospital together. When he wakes up Nikita is poking his cheek with a frown.
“Hey bud,” Sid yawns as he wipes a hand over his face. “Your mom and dad went to the hospital, looks like you’re gonna be a big brother soon.”
Nikita seems wholly unimpressed as he looks at his godfather, “Can we get McDonald’s breakfast before school?”
And because he’s a sucker for Niki, Sid agrees.
By the time they’re pulling up to Nikita’s school Sid is more awake, parking and following Niki up the path to his classroom.
“I’ll pick you up later too bud,” Sid tells him as he ruffles his hair. “Then maybe we can go see your little sister.”
“Nikita!”
Both Sidney and Nikita whip around at the excited voice, watching as a little girl runs up to them. Sid immediately clocks her as Vivie from the picture Nikita showed him. She’s sporting white overalls and a pink sweater, her blonde curls bouncing around in the pigtails fastened high on her head.
Vivie hugs Niki tightly then blinks up at Sid and he swears the air just got much thinner because he can’t pull in a full breath, not when he feels like he’s looking in a god damn mirror. Vivie has the same big hazel eyes as him, the same jutting chin and furrowed brows. But her smile and those dimples… Those remind Sidney of someone else.
“Vivie! You left your lunchbox in the car,” the voice that haunts his dreams is suddenly right behind Sid and before he can think better of it he turns around.
Annie looks much the same as she did eight years ago, her heart shaped face and wide green eyes exactly how he remembered them. Her blonde hair is shorter, resting just above her shoulders now. There’s something else Sid can’t quite put his finger on but he thinks that Annie doesn’t hold that same infectious joy she used to.
“Oh my god,” Annie breathes the words out slowly as she makes eye contact with Sidney. “I- Oh my god…”
“Miss Annie, this is my Uncle Sid,” Nikita explains excitedly. “My mommy is having a baby so Uncle Sid got me McDonald’s and took me to school!”
Annie schools her features as she tears her gaze away from Sid and pastes on a smile for Nikita, “That’s so exciting! I’m sure you’re excited to be a big brother.”
The school bell rings then and Vivie and Nikita waste no time hastily saying goodbye before running off hand in hand. When they’re out of sight Sidney turns to Annie who’s white as a sheet as she stares at her shoes.
“Annie,” the word is low and laced with hurt as Sid focuses on the woman he used to love. “Annie please tell me you didn’t… That she’s not…”
Sidney can’t bring himself to say the words out loud, even though he’s almost positive they’re true. Vivie’s face is ingrained in his mind now, showing up every time he blinks. His eyes, Annie’s smile… He stares at Annie and begs her to tell him anything but what he knows is true.
Please don’t tell me you had our daughter and kept it from me. Please don’t tell me I’ve missed seven years of her life. Please don’t tell me that perfect little girl has been so close and so far. Please. Please. Please.
“Sidney, I am so sorry.”

Note
Sid deserves a round of applause for keeping his composure and continuing to film instead of yeeting the phone and launching himself into geno's arms in celebration
I think we simply have to consider that watching Geno golf is a kink for him and he in fact will savor it all the way through the steak dinner they inevitably have with the team tonight and then and ONLY then, when they're home, will he peel Geno's golf cloths off of him and go to town

Neon Genesis Evangelion 12
Tumblr media
I'm old enough to remember when 2000 A.D. was kind of a big deal, and now it's just whatever 1976 was to people who lived in 2000 A.D.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gosh, this takes me back. Remember back in 2000, when everything was mustard-toned for some reason? Triple H and the Rock kept trading the WWF title back and forth, and Antarctica was on fire?
Tumblr media
We got a glimpse of Misato's past in that flashback, but in the present, she's been promoted to Major. Shinji and Asuka didn't even notice, but Big Rigg Mahoney caught on right away, because he's an expert on rank insignia and such. Suzuhara knows too, but come on, we all know he learned it from Big Rigg Mahoney.
Tumblr media
The Eva pilots do some sort of "stress test" thing at the base. I'm not sure what this is for, but Shinji shows great improvement so he gets a gold star for it. He's uncomfortable being praised, though.
Tumblr media
Later, the kids throw a little party to celebrate Misato's promotion. Oh, I didn't notice the sash she's got on, that's adorable!
Naturally, Big Rigg Mahoney organized this whole shindig, and the writers honor him by using his full name for the first time since Episode 4. It's too late, though. He's been Big Rigg Mahoney for too long now, and he won't go back.
Tumblr media
Speaking of guys I had to rename because I don't dare look up what they're actually called, I think Vice Commander Clownshoes needs a cooler rank. "Admiral Clownshoes" has a nice ring to it.
Tumblr media
The others make a lot of loud screeching noises, and Shinji and Misato have this quiet conversation in the middle of it, which seems kind of impossible, with the noise, but okay. They both don't handle praise very well, and Shinji asks why she joined NERV, and she dodges the question.
Tumblr media
At the moment, Major Katsugari is in charge of NERV, because Geno Ikari and Admiral Clownshoes are on some expedition to Antarctica, or what's left of it. We never find out why they're there, so I'm just gonna skip over this.
Tumblr media
No, wait. Imagine a "Steamed Hams" bit featuring these two. Clownshoes feeds him Krustyburgers and Gendo just clasps his hands over his beard and stares enigmatically.
Tumblr media
Oh, this is the dumbest looking one yet. I thought the Angel from Episode 1 looked kind of weak, but I didn't mind because I assumed they would get cooler looking as the show went on. Now I'm starting to wonder if that guy was my favorite the whole time.
Tumblr media
This Angel just floats in low orbit over the Earth and drops pieces of itself. The telemetry indicates that it's just practicing, improving its aim, but Misato figures it'll eventually launch an attack on NERV headquarters. Ritsuko further speculates that it'll drop its entire body when that happens, which would cause tremendous devastation. They seem very chipper about this.
Tumblr media
So the Angel's attack strategy is.... falling. Really hard, I guess. Misato's counterplay is... catch the Angel before it hits.
Let me back up. A while back, it was established that Angels have an "AT Field" which protects them from conventional weapons. The Evas can neutralize this advantage, and this is apparently because the Evas possess their own AT Fields. I'm not sure if the fields cancel each other out, or if the Evas can use their fields to penetrate the fields of their enemies. Anyway, I think this Angel isn't just falling from a great height; it's also using its AT field to make a bigger impact when it hits. Likewise, Misato's plan seems to depend on the Evas' AT fields being powerful enough to halt the angel just before it hits the ground.
Tumblr media
But this is still an objectively stupid plan. The calculations say it only has a 1-in-10,000 chance of working. Even the pilot kids can tell how stupid it is. Misato has already ordered the evacuation of Tokyo-3 and all non-essential NERV personnel. The kids still agree to do it, but they don't expect it to work. Misato offers to take them all out for a steak dinner if they win. You know, if the four of them all came out of this episode wearing Ribera jackets, that would be fuckin' awesome.
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna photoshop it, but just imagine them all showing up for work the next day rocking these bad boys. Wait, the Ribera steakhouse is in Tokyo, so I guess it got destroyed in the wars that followed the Second Impact. Well so much for that.
Tumblr media
Asuka doesn't plan to write a will because she doesn't expect to die. Rei also has no use for a will, but it's spookier when she says it, like she doesn't need a will because she cannot be killed in any way that matters. Shinji doesn't need to write a will because I'm pretty sure the only thing he owns is that stupid shirt of his, and the tape player that he's probably worn out replaying the same two songs over and over.
Tumblr media
Also, Rei pre-emptively refuses the steak dinner. Not because she's afraid of failure, or because she is confident in her success. She just doesn't care for meat. Bad. Ass.
Tumblr media
So they start getting ready for this, and Misato basically tells her crew that she has no idea what she's doing, and most of this plan is pure guesswork. It only works if the Evas manage to get under the Angel as it comes down, and they have no idea if it's even going to crash on them. She's just pretty sure it will, and she even trots out that "woman's intuition" line, which is one of the hackiest things in the hack playbook.
Tumblr media
On their way to deploy, Shinji asks Asuka why she pilots the Eva, and you might want to sit down for this: She does it for the attention. Just the mere fact that people will acknowledge her existence, as if anyone could ignore this kid. She asks Shinji why he pilots the Eva, and he doesn't know. This is episode twelve, by the way. We'll get our answer today, but let the record show: this is episode twelve.
Tumblr media
Then we get a flashback? Flash forward? At some point, Misato finally reveals to Shinji why she joined NERV. Her father was a scientist who threw himself into his work, just like Shinji's dad. Misato resented him for it, but when Second Impact happened, he sacrificed himself to save her, and she's felt a burning desire to defeat the Angels ever since. It's not just to avenge her father, but perhaps to spite him. Shinji can sort of relate to this.
Tumblr media
Back to the mission, the Angel has begun to descend, so the Evas have to hustle those buns before McDonalds switches from the breakfast menu to the lunch menu. "McDonalds had all-day breakfast in 2015", you may say. Yare yare daze. In this world, where the Angels have destroyed half the world's population, the visionaries who made all-day breakfast possible no longer exist. The funding and logistical support for such an initiative has been siphoned away to fund the NERV agency. And so, manga man, the breakfast menu will end at 11:00am.
Tumblr media
Anyway, yeah, Shinji gets under the Angel and catches it, then the girls swoop in to add their AT fields to his, and then Asuka stabs it in the eyeball to kill it.
Tumblr media
I guess this makes sense.
Tumblr media
With that settled, Misato receives a call from Gendo Ikari in the Antarctic. He congratulates her on her success, and handwaves the damage done to Eva Unit 01, since destroying Angels is their purpose. He then asks to speak with the pilot of Unit 01 and tells Shinji, directly, that he did a good job. Wow. I just assumed this would never happen, or maybe Gendo would say half of this with his dying breath in the final episode or something. But no, they just gave this away in Episode 12. Huh.
Tumblr media
Later, the kids take up Misato on her steak dinner promise, but they choose a ramen stand instead, because they know she's poor as fuck. Also, Rei doesn't like meat, so this just makes sense. They should have gone to Taquiera Goku. This is so close, but yet so far.
Tumblr media
Anyway, while they eat, Shinji tells Misato that he finally knows why he pilots the Eva. It's so he can hear the praise from his father, like he did today. That's what keeps him going, even if it took this long for him to get it.
Tumblr media
Well, we're inching a little closer, I guess. This will probably all come together quickly, so let me use this space to throw out a few theories I've had in mind.
The Eva pilots have to be 14-year-olds for some reason. I can see no good reason for this, except that there must be some quality in them that literally did not exist prior to Second Impact. Either they got magic powers from it, or they've been genetically engineered to pilot Evas, or some other thing, but it's got to be some deal where the pilots were "invented" around the same time as the Evas themselves. NERV doesn't want to use fourteen year-olds, but there literally isn't anyone older who would be compatible, and they simply can't wait any longer for them to grow up.
I suspect that the Evas are Angels themselves, or some sort of technology built from Angel corpses, or something like that. That's why they have AT fields, and why no one else has any idea how to recreate the technology.
I also get a strong I Am Legend vibe from this whole story. I only saw the Will Smith movie, but as I understand it, the book follows a similar track, where this lone human is trying to get rid of the vampires, only to discover that the vampires see him as the monster, since he's this lone enemy who constantly tries to destroy their community. He's their legend now, just as Count Dracula was the legend in his culture once.
The Angels keep attacking NERV, getting bolder and smarter each time, and no one knows or cares why this keeps happening, because they're too worried about defending themselves. But it sure feels like the Angels are trying to defend themselves, since NERV is committed to their destruction. And if I'm right, it sure seems like Gendo Ikari is doing some shady shit involving Angels, which might make him seem like a major threat to the Angels. They're trying to destroy humanity before humanity destroys them. Second Impact itself may have been caused by Angels trying to stop Ikari or Misato's dad from hurting them.
So I predict this will get revealed near the end. The Angel attacks will get more intense and brutal, and then the kids will find out that they've been the baddies all along, and shit will hit the fan. Don't tell me if I'm right or not, but that's how things are looking to me right now.

Their appointment ended fifteen minutes ago, but they weren't done quite yet. An elegantly dressed woman approached their well-appointed table with a smile.
“These are the final three dishes you can sample today. But, if you’re not satisfied, I’d be happy to set up another appointment for you.”
Ethan did his best to contain his annoyance. He wanted this done already, and the time restraints seemed preposterous to him, especially since they had booked the last appointment of the day. But he held it in; after all, he wanted this to be a happy experience for his fiancee. So instead of voicing his true opinion, he merely smiled.
“I’m sure we can make a selection based on what we’ve sampled,” Kaycee smiled. “Isn’t that right, Ethan?”
“Mmm. I suppose."
“Then, I’ll give you some privacy to try these. If you have any questions, I’m right outside the door.”
The clicking of her heels echoed as she walked across the empty room. Ethan and Kaycee waited silently until they heard the door click behind her to dig in.
“So!” she beamed, rubbing her hands together with delight. “What do we have now!”
“It looks like coq au vin, almond-crusted salmon, and chateaubriand.”
“All fancier than anything this Philly girl ever thought she’d serve at her wedding, but let’s give it a go!”
“You act as if you were raised solely on Geno’s Philly steaks and pretzels.”
“You’re not far off,” she giggled.
“Really? Should I get your mother on the phone? I’m sure she’d have a different story.”
“She sure would,” Kaycee laughed. “And it would end with her yelling at me, so, please…. Let’s not do that.”
“I love having something to hold over your head,” he winked, lifting a forkful of the coq au vin to his mouth. Biting into the succulent morsel of meat, a slow groan usually reserved for smaller venues escaped him.
“That good?” Kaycee grinned. “I haven’t heard that sound from you since our day off together last week.”
“Mmm. If I could find a way to bring those two things together, I might just believe in heaven. You’ve got to try this.”
Kaycee stuck her fork into the dish and took a bite. Her eyes widened, signaling her approval, though more tepid than Ethan's.
“You don’t like it?” He asked.
“No, I do! It’s really good, it’s just….”
“Just?”
“I don’t know, it’s not what I pictured having at our wedding.”
“Then what do you picture?”
She closed her eyes and tossed her head back, biting her lower lip as she appeared deep in thought.
“I know! My mom’s Braciole. I know it’s not standard wedding fare, and there is no way I can ask my mother to make it, but….”
“I don’t care what standard is. If you wanted Big Macs and fries served, that’s what we’d be having….”
“Well…” she interrupted.
“I was exaggerating! But Braciole… we could do that. Let’s ask the caterer if they could prepare some for us to test… on another day, of course.”
“Of course!” She smiled. “You wouldn’t mind?”
“Not at all! I just want you happy.”
“OK, and if we like it… Braciole and coq au vin it is!”
“Both?”
“Sure,” she shrugged. “It’s good to give people a choice… and the way you moaned over that coq au vin? It’ll get me raring to go for our wedding night.”
“Well,” he chuckled. “I think our menu is just about finalized.”
 ~~~~~
A little over one year later…
The kitchen was filled with a lovely aroma as pots and pans bubbled with the offerings of that evening’s feast. He was a bit frazzled, even though everything was well under control. Everything needed to be perfect tonight. The dining room was already set with… the table adorned with the exact same linens, china, crystal, and silverware from their wedding the year before. When he called the caterer to inquire about renting the items, they thought it was so endearing they offered to prepare their wedding meal, but Ethan assured him he had that under control.
He jumped when his phone rang… it was Sienna, who had been kind enough to get Kaycee out of the house for the afternoon, advising they’d soon be home. He thanked her profusely and met his wife at the door, a blindfold in hand. She teased him, asking if he planned on getting that kinky so soon? But as he snuggly tied the knot behind her head and led her to the dining room with a smile, it was a definite possibility, he assured, but later.
Once they were standing in front of the candlelit table, he uncovered her eyes and smiled when she gasped.
“Ethan, everything is beautiful! Wait, are these the dishes we had at our wedding?”
“They are. I got everything we used that day, from the napkins to the candle holders.”
Words failed her as she turned to him with a bright smile. “Ethan, this is so… I don’t know what to say!”
“You don’t need to say anything, but I do want you to eat,” he pulled back the chair, and once she was settled him, dinner was served.
About an hour later, the couple was relaxing on the sofa. A very full but content, Kaycee rested her head on Ethan’s shoulder.
“I can’t believe you learned to make my Mom’s Brasiole!” She said as she rubbed her belly, “And the caterer’s coq au vin too!”
“Well, I love cooking, but even if I didn’t, I’d learn how to make 30 different meals if it meant seeing you this happy.”
“I am happy, and not just because the food was downright orgasmic. But because you did this for me. You have no idea how much this means or how loved I feel.”
Ethan leaned over and gave his wife a gentle kiss.
“Good, because you are loved. I’ll tell you what, this is our new tradition! I’ll make this every year on our anniversary. What do you say?”
“Every anniversary? Won’t you want a break once in a while?”
“Nope, what I want is to make you smile. So, every year?”
“Sounds like you’ve got a set date, Dr. Ramsey!” She stood up from the couch and extended her hand with a smile. “Now, why don’t we put that blindfold to better use?”
~~~~~
As the years passed, Ethan kept his promise no matter how they celebrated the day, and their celebrations took on many forms. Some years, work kept them busy, and it felt like just another day until Kaycee returned home to the delicious aroma that filled the air. Other times, it took a little creativity for Ethan to accomplish his task. She thought they’d surely skip the tradition the year they spent their anniversary in Tuscany. But Ethan was undeterred. He couldn’t make the meal at their hotel, so he rented a nearby house for the day and surprised his wife with their traditional dinner.
But some years weren’t quite that fancy. One of Kaycee’s favorites of all was the year she and Ethan were on parental leave together after Emma's birth. With the baby finally asleep, the exhausted mom collapsed on the couch. As she was trying to recall if she had showered that day or was it the day before? Ethan pulled up two tray tables and presented two paper plates with their special meal.
“Ethan!” she gasped. “What is this?”
“You didn’t forget our anniversary, did you?” He frowned.
“Considering I said happy anniversary before, I think it’s fair to say I remembered! But… how did you find time to do this? We have a newborn. I never expected….”
“I made everything the other day when your Mom was in town.”
“You mean the day we took Emma out of the house so you could get some much-needed rest?”
Ethan merely shrugged.
“I froze all the food after. I knew I’d be able to heat it up for you today.”
“But you were supposed to rest that day!”
“I did… a little, but it was more important to keep my promise to my wife.”
She moved her hand to the back of his head and pulled him in for a tender kiss.
“How’d I ever get so lucky?” she asked.
“If you ask me, I’m the one.”
~~~~~
She knew the day wouldn’t be easy, but she promised herself she’d try not to cry. She’d do her best to be happy; she knew that’s what he’d want her to do. She had been staying with Emma and her family and didn’t want to make a fuss or bring everyone down. Her daughter was well aware of what day it was but decided to follow her mother’s lead. Finishing the dishes, she saw Kaycee reading in her favorite chair and smiled.
“Hey, Mom,” she asked softly. “Is there anything special you’d like to do today? It’s just you and me, so I’m happy to do whatever you want.”
“Well, that new pizza place opened in town, and I thought we could order from there tonight, my treat. What do you say?”
“That's a possibility,” Emma nodded. “What time do you want to have dinner?”
“I’d like to take a nap now, so how about around six.”
“That sounds perfect,” Emma grinned. “I’ll be sure to get you up if you sleep through the alarm.”
“I’ve only done that once, my dear,” Kaycee laughed.
“Even so.”
Several hours later, Kaycee woke up. She wasn’t as quick on her feet anymore, but she managed to get down the stairs alone and found her daughter setting the dining room table with her best china.
“That’s a little fancy for pizza, don’t you think?” Kaycee smiled.
Caught off guard, Emma jumped. “Mom! You scared me. You’re up earlier than I expected.”
“I had to be. I wasn’t going to sleep through the alarm and have you gloating,’ Kaycee winked. “But you haven’t answered my question. Why so fancy for pizza?”
Her daughter’s face softened as she smiled a tiny grin. “Because we’re not having pizza, Mom. Why don’t you sit right here.”
With her heart beginning to race a little faster, Kaycee sat down. Moments later, Emma emerged from the kitchen, two plates in hand.
“One for you,” she beamed, “and one for me.”
Tears rushed to Kaycee’s eyes, and she let out a gasp.  “It’s… it’s….”
“Happy Anniversary, Mom,” Emma said, leaning over and taking her mother in her arms. “I know it’s got to be so hard without Dad here, but the love you two shared, it still deserves to be honored.”
“I miss him,” Kaycee wept softly. “But all I have to do is look at you, and I know part of him is still here. But my sweet girl, how did you know….”
“Well, I may not have followed you and Dad into the medical field, but I wouldn't be such a good lawyer if I wasn't observant, you know. And, if watching Dad make this dinner for you every year was not enough….”
Overcome with emotion, Emma covered her mouth and closed her eyes. She promised herself she wouldn't cry, at least not yet.
“When we were at the beach house last summer after Daddy got the diagnosis… he told me all about this tradition. He asked if I’d learn these recipes, and of course, I agreed. He made me make them a dozen times until he said I finally got it right. Then I promised him I’d make this dinner for you every year on your anniversary, and it’s a promise I intend to keep.”
Tears rushed down Kaycee’s cheeks as she beckoned her daughter near. The two women held each other for a long while until Emma broke the tension.
“Mom, the food’s gonna get cold, and if I have to put it in the microwave….”
“Oh,” Kaycee laughed, “if you do that, your Dad will do whatever he needs to send a storm our way!”
Clasping her daughter's face in her hands, Kaycee smiled, and Emma swore her mother looked twenty years younger.
“No more tears, my sweet girl. Let’s eat. Let’s enjoy this beautiful meal together like my Ethan would want us to.”
Emma nodded and opened a bottle of wine. Pouring two glasses, she handed one to her mom.
“To Daddy, and you, and the love that led to me being here. I love you, Mom.”
“You’re the best of both of us, my dear. Thank you for all of this.”
The two women enjoyed the rest of their meal with smiles and laughter, nary a tear. And that night, while Kaycee showered, Emma finished one last task. Sneaking out just in time, she leaned against the door and smiled.
“I told you I’d get it done, Dad,” she whispered, then snuck off down the hall to the love of her own.
Kaycee shuffled out of the bathroom and toward her bed, noticing a bright red envelope before she sat down. Taking a deep breath, she held it close to her heart for a long while. Her frail hands trampled as she broke the seal. Then, her gentle smile grew three times brighter. She’d know that handwriting anywhere.
My Dearest Kaycee,
If you’re reading this, it’s our first anniversary apart, and I know it's a lot to ask, but I'd like for you not to be sad. While we may not be together, neither are we apart. Love like ours is rare, and it would take much more than death to separate us. So if you're ever missing me, spend time in the garden we planted together and listen to the birds that flock there. I will be in their song. Or stand at the beach where we shared so many beautiful days and watch the waves roll in. I will be the sea air that surrounds you. Or, best of all, look into the eyes of our Emma, the greatest gift you ever gave me, and you’ll know I am there.
She promised to help keep our tradition going. I promised you long ago to always make sure you knew how loved you were on this day, and, my precious Kaycee, a promise I make to you, is a promise that must be kept. Death be damned.
I love you for all time and eternity.
Until we meet again, my love.
Ethan
Kaycee rolled over and wrapped her blanket tightly around her. Though she missed him terribly, she smiled as she heard her grandchildren laughing as their parents tucked them in just a room away... and she knew, he was there. He was in their laughter, he was in her tears, he was in everything that surrounded her, but most of all, he was in her heart, and that was where he'd always stay.
What if Genos watched Saitama's hero series as a kid too? Saitama learns this when they mention it in the news, about the actors or a remake. Saitama is surprised because he's older than Genos so things from his time would already be forgotten. But Genos explains that this series was so popular that they used to do reruns in tv when he was little.
They're happy to have something in common to talk about, and they even find the chapters in Internet. The series itself is more cringe than they remembered, but strangely nostalgic and keeps its charm.
YOUR BRAIN. GOD, THAT WOULD BE SO CUTE OMFG
Oh, the fluff potential 🥺
Imagine the actors' interviews are on TV during a very quiet evening—the usual news updates long since drowned out by both of them. Saitama is cutting out some coupons for cleaning supplies (and one for notebooks), Genos is laser-focused on drawing something Saitama can't make out from where he's sitting, their beand new slow-cooker is cooking the nicely marbled steak they got as a gift from King (the day before, a new game King was dying for came out and he was too anxious to go and get it himself because everyone would've flooded the shops and crowds are Gross. Saitama and Genos offered to go for him instead and successfully saved him a copy).
All of a sudden, music plays from the TV, quietly because the volume wasn't that high, but Saitama heard it all the same. It sounded Familiar, very upbeat and over the top, with a guitar riff that was unforgettable to him, so he looked up. It took a minute to process what he was looking at, but when it clicked, his lips parted gently in a surprised stare.
Nostalgia hits him square in the face when old clips are being played. He has memories of tying tablecloths and curtains to the sleeves/straps of his shirts as capes, only to get yelled at to take them off. He remembers, back when kids didn't think he was weird, playing Heroes vs. The World Ender, his character always inspired by his favorite hero Junkyōsha. He remembers a time where he would stand in front of the TV, intently watching his heroes fight, almost lose, then come up victorious in a way that had his small soul flailing its arms and jumping with glee.
Before he knows it, he's smiling. Now he's actually listening as the interviewer asks the cast questions about the up and coming reboot. Sadly, Saitama knows how most reboots usually go, but this cast seems genuine and kind. And he can tell a good half of them were also fans of the show, too—completely ecstatic to be characters in their favorite childhood show. He has hope for it.
He can't say why he looked towards Genos—maybe to tell him about the show, maybe to check up on him—but he does, only to be promptly met with the cyborg gawking at the TV. There's a look on his eyes, intense but in a way that was... well, not nicer—all of his expressions were nice, especially when they were intense—but more sweeter under the surface. Like he was in awe. Kind of how he always looked at Saitama whenever he said something "wise", but different. He realized quickly what Genos was feeling.
"Woah- Wait, You watched this show too??" He asked, scissors and coupons forgotten. Genos snaps out of his wonderstruck stare to look at Saitama. "I thought it ended after 5 years?"
"You watched it, too, sensei!?" The cyborg was elated, eyes shining with amazement and pure, unfiltered joy. It tweaked at Saitama's heart, and full on pulled when Genos began to smile. "When I was younger, they did a rerun of it because of its popularity. It didn't truly stop airing until 7 years ago."
"I could've been watching this back in high school?" He laughs a little. "Damn it, that would've made classes so much easier to get through! Whenever a show I liked was airing that day, that's all I would look forward to for hours. I'd do all my work just so the time would pass by faster." A humored grin spreads across his face. "When I was a kid, I did that every Wednesday and Friday when it came on. My dad was so mad that the only days I got good scores on anything was when Onikisu Ketsugō was on."
"I remember doing something similar as well," Genos says, smiling fondly—easily. "I'd come home and run to the living room immediately, and my mother would already have a glass of juice and sandwiches or slices of fruit for me on the table."
Saitama knows for certain that Genos is over the moon now, although he's trying his best to restrain it. Having him to talk about his parents, or childhood in general, was never easy on him. Not like this. Genos so happily shared a memory like that with him, and he'd be lying if he said he wasn't proud of him or excited to see him so happy.
"Who was your favorite hero? I used to be obsessed with Junkyōsha. His cape was so cool with the galaxy pattern on the inside and the white outisde."
"I did really like his costume. But I... I liked Zentoku the most. I never knew why, although their personality was very fun."
"Oh, yeah! I remember them! Weren't they like, really edgy, but always smiling no matter what happened? I used to think they were so weird, but now I really liked how they did that..."
And the conversation goes on. For the first time, Saitama rambles. He goes over 20 words almost everytime he talks, and Genos shares many memories without hesitation. They talk about their favorite episodes, what characters they disliked, the ones they wished they could change. Hell, during dinner, as they were eating that perfectly marbled steak, they made jokes and discussed character rewrites. Made new ones, brought back one-offs. They had so much fun that day, and when the remake came out a few months later, they watched the first episodes together.
*The kid shrugs* I dunno, it's my sister's basket. I asked her before and she just told me it was older sister magic.
So, what do you want first? As you can see I have some pastries and some savoury foods too! Um, we have chocolate chip cookies, watermelon cake, um uh—what's this called?—Oh right, um, chocolate mocha moose cake, cinnamon buns, cinnamon buns but with vanilla filling, cinnamon buns but with chocolate filling, caviar—why do I have this??—Orange cake, Blueberry cake and oh! This one's an assorted cake, it's supposed to be a surprise thing on which flavour is there but I'll just tell you. This slice has watermelon, this one has steak, this one is cookie crumb flavoured, this one is sandwich flavoured, this one is eggplant/aubergine flavoured and this one is Orange Joe flavoured. The Orange Joe slice is the one slice everyone avoids eating cause apparently it tastes like rotted soap or spoiled oranges but eh, anyway I'm getting off track, we have a few more left to go. These ones over here are steaks, several levels of cookedness or however you say it. I recommend avoiding this one *the kid points to a specific steak* unless you like microwaved steak cause it's microwaved steak. Honestly out of the hundred people I know only Sora wants to eat that crap. Anyways, we also have um Hero sandwiches from... Geno's? Gino's? I forget, but I got a meat pizza and a 5 cheese pizza from there as well! Finally, I got this weird vegetable dish thing! It's mostly made of aubergines. So, now that you know what everything is, which one do you want to eat first? *The child tilts their head, smiling at the taller man before them.*
"I'll take the Orange Joe slice! That sounds like it would be good!"
