I don't know how to say this succinctly but -- please don't take writing advice personally? A generic "here's a tip or two on how to write better" is not a moral judgement on you, or your specific writing that didn't do that thing.

Even critiques specifically of your writing shouldn't be taken as personal attacks -- I know it feels like that's your soul on the page sometimes, but it's not, and writers have got to learn to deal with advice and criticism from other people if they want to improve. Maybe you accept that feedback. Maybe you don't -- not all critique is created equal, and you are the final judge. (Even if you might be wrong. You need to be okay with that possibility too.)

But you have to understand that it's not an attack on you as a person or on your abilities. It's not an attack at all. You have to be able to separate yourself enough from your writing to understand that "this could be better" does not mean "you're a bad writer and a bad person." It simply means "this could be better."

And when that "this thing could be better" isn't even directed at you specifically? When it's a generic, thrown-out-there piece of advice in a book or a blog post or an article? There is no realm in which you should take that personally, or where it should make you want to delete all your old writing. Take in the advice, evaluate whether or not it's useful to you, and then either implement it or reject it and move on with doing what you love.

i don't even know what to say. Apparently my brother has been sending doja cat (singer) recipe links as instagram dms for literal YEARS now because he doesn't know an easy way to bookmark them in the app. Which led to an attempt to save recipes by just linking them to celebrities who he assumes aren't checking their dms anyways. this lifehack got him blocked by mac demarco and lorde however. Doja never blocked or responded so he just continued to use her inbox to save insta recipes. FOR YEARS.

my (cis) brother is using my old license to buy wine and it has the gender marker F on there. so whenever he gets asked he just says “oh i’m trans”. its literally worked every single time.
