These programs (which isn't actual artificial intelligence by the way) wouldn't exist without the unethical theft of hundreds of thousands of images from artists who put hard work into their craft. Replacing creativity and skill with that is not the answer. Art is about far more than having a quick image puked up by technology.

Just kidding, I used the free trial of the discord bot Midjourney to create these AI generated images of a dark fantasy 80s style Peter Pan movie! We’ve got Hangman’s Tree, Tinker Bell, Peter Pan, Wendy Darling, Slightly, Cubby, Captain Hook, & the Jolly Roger! It didn’t listen to me when I asked for Tink to have wings, or for the boys to have their fox & bear ear hats, but everything else is basically exactly as I pictured it. It really sparks my imagination! What do you think?!

The weird funky imperfect stuff was actually kinda fun. The shit we have now is less so.

I will say that the better AI gets at accurately creating photographs or art, the less interested I am. Where's that quote about how the imperfections of the medium will be the thing that defines it? My fascination with AI from an artistic standpoint is mostly centered around the <2021 days when everything it generated kinda looked like confused, swirly nonsense. Before its cateracts were lasered off by evil mathematicians and rooms sweltering from the hot breath of a thousand GPUs.. an AI was a humble, ugly program that could evoke concepts like "night time", or "a castle", or "food", without any literal representation on screen. THAT is compelling, artistically, imo. It's like dream inspiration on demand. But yeah the puffer jacket pope era sucks and bores me, and the uncanny reality of contemporary AI-generated imagery is frightening in a much less tantilizing way than it used to be

A birding club held an art contest recently and a bad generated image that didn't conform to the contest criteria won. It was supposed to be a realistic depiction of a Black hawk, but hers was rainbow, had one wing, spaghetti feet, no body, and several features that blended into the awful background. I will not post it here. It was prompted by someone who worked there, which is probably why it was allowed in the first place.

The internet didn't like that. Just about every comment on the post was ripping them apart over it. When I first saw it last night it had been up for a day and had under 30 comments, and not even 24 hours later, there were over 300. I happen to know a lot of artists so when I shared the post, they dogpiled onto it and it got spread a lot farther than the club was probably anticipating.

Luckily they bowed to the pressure and DQd the fake shit. The real art that took it's rightful place in first is a lovely piece that is actually deserving of that win.

Anyways, to all the people who think "ai art" is harmless and fun, it's not. It has huge negative effects on artists everywhere. People are losing their jobs, commissions, and contests over this badly done shit.

It's not art, it's theft.

Algorithms are not a bad thing!!! They are a tool, and we are only protesting them because they are being used for the wrong purposes!

In case you're still reflexively on the fence when I proclaim that the conversation about AI has progressed to a truly batshit level of reactionary mythology, people on twitter are currently calling out the animators for Spiderverse for using a digital interpolator to assist with lining, because a documentary used the term "machine learning" to describe it.

Apparently using digital tools is taking work away from real artists. I am excited for 6 months time when the discourse has evolved into "all movies should be hand-inked on the inside of Palaeolithic caves to escape the corrupting labour-stealing influence of the pencil".

(Yes this is currently a minority opinion in this instance, largely because people just really like Spiderverse. But the fact that these arguments are being seriously made shows how far off the deep end this conversation has gone. These types of arguments for blanket technology bans already made little to no sense due to the double standard applied, and this demonstrates that by removing the double standard and taking them closer to their logical conclusion - all labour saving tools are bad, especially if they involve a spooky computer algorithm).

I haven't seen a whole lot of this on tumblr (I know it's here, I just have a very small following list) but it's fucking everywhere on facebook and I'm sick of it. Support real artists, not art theft.
