PDF: transgender history, susan stryker (2017 updated edition via archive.org) examples of archive.org lending books (accounts are free): - we both laughed in pleasure (collected diaries of lou sullivan) - trap door: trans cultural production and the politics of visibility - captive genders: trans embodiment and the prison industrial complex you can also find materials there using metadata search terms like "transgender people." notably, there's a series of long interviews with lou sullivan recorded shortly after his AIDS diagnosis, which i've found really interesting. (be aware that some materials will be redundant with other collections and using broad terms like "transgender" might also yield anti-trans materials.) & if you ARE a young gay person who feels isolated in your current situation, queering the map might be a small comfort to you

The Masculine Cover Models of "Die Freundin"
(various dates, 1929-1930)
while most cover models for the magazine were (predictably) feminine women posing for nude photographs alone or in groups, i was able to find these four exceptions* among them in the archive. maybe there were even more in the 3 years that arent collected in the archive! due to the quality of the scans i fully cannot tell if 2 or 3 of these are the same person... nevertheless i can only imagine what their appearance must have moved in girls back in the day - did masculine women have them acting unwise? in any case i felt like unearthing these primordial butches and showing them to tumblr dot com... who knows what happened to them in the years after.
only one of the models is named, and im not entirely sure the picture used was meant to be a "glamorous" photo. her name is Charlotte "Lotte" Hahm and shes most likely on the cover of No. 17, 1929 because of the recent merging of the two ladies' clubs Violetta and Monbijou (discussed by Hahm in an article on page 5-6 of that number). you might recognize her from this picture, which has made the rounds on tumblr (blog: genderoutlaws) in the last few years:
which is also on the cover of an issue of Die Freundin (No.1, 1929). Hahm was actually a prominent lesbian and feminist organizer could really also have an entire post all to herself. she even survived both the Nazi regime and WW2 to keep organizing well into the 1940s and 50s. more about her (and almost equally as important: more pictures of her cool outfits) can be found here (Lesbengeschichte.org, in german). let me know if theres interest in a translation of that site's biography into english!
*there is one more from 1928 that i am omitting from this post because she will be the subject of her own post later. inquisitive readers can find her on the cover of No. 7, 1928.
image IDs under the cut:
(image 1: photograph in black and white of a round-faced fair-skinned woman with short slicked back hair looking to the right, smiling while holding a cigarette in her hand. she is wearing an open suit jacket with a white pocket square, a white dress shirt, and a striped tie)
(image 2: photograph in black and white of a fair-skinned woman with hair that blurs into the dark background of the photograph, seated and looking sternly over her right shoulder. she is dressed in a black tuxedo jacket with large lapels, a white dress shirt with a black bowtie, and a monocle attached to her shirt. she is holding a cigarette in her hand)
(image 3: photograph in black and white of a fair skinned woman looking the the left, dressed in some kind of white and black uniform cap with a leather brim and laurels, black uniform jacket with white braided shoulder boards and a white pocket square, a white dress shirt, and a black bowtie. the photograph is captioned in german as "The modern woman!")
(image 4: photograph in black and white of a fair skinned woman standing with her hands in her pockets facing the camera directly, her hair dark, short, and parted to one side. she is wearing a white dress shirt, white or possibly very light colored tie, dark suit pants, and light colored shoes. the photo is captioned in german as "Lotte Hahm, 1st club president of the Ladies' Clubs Violetta and Monbijou")
(image 5: the same person as in image 4 posing with a sign that reads "Hooray! Die Freundin is here again!" in german, wearing a polka dotted bowtie instead of a long tie. the rest of the outfit is the same as in image 4)

Hello! Remember this post from @genderoutlaws (very sorry for the @, but this is important) about the Michael Knowles event happening at the University of Pittsburgh?
There are actually three transphobic events going on at Pitt throughout the next few weeks. Thankfully, there's protests being planned anonymously to combat these events. This Redbubble shop is designed to raise money for those protests! As found in the account description:
"A fundraising account for the trans rights rally at the University of Pittsburgh! Protesting the transphobic speakers allowed to endanger trans lives on our campus.
Raised money will go toward things like first aid supplies, food and water for protesters, poster board and other sign-making supplies, and legal fees if the need arises. Excess funds will be given back to the wonderful artists who donated their work for this cause."
Right now there are 17 designs by multiple trans & ally artists. More will come soon, if I'm guessing. So check it out!
I'm in contact with some of the people organizing this resistance (they will of course remain anonymous). If you want to support them more directly (i.e. through a direct donation rather than through Redbubble), you're welcome to DM me. Cheers!
#transphobia#protest#redbubble#adrian posts#i should also note: not every artist who contributed is credited#because not everyone wanted to be

Hii! I don’t know if you got this so I’m sending again, my tumblr has been fighting me lately :( but my paper is just a high school one is it’s pretty general, so I’m looking for stuff that talks about how trans and butch are intertwined and how historically being butch is important to trans people. Thanky :3
hi hi! i did get it but i forgot so i'll reply to this one :3 that sounds really cool! i have a few resources you could check out, mainly stone butch blues by leslie feinberg (here is a free online pdf!). i also love hir works "trans liberation" and "transgender warriors"! i also recommend looking through stuff here for some personal experiences and looking up some stuff from the Gendertrash From Hell magazine/publication! and, here is an article of an interview about the intersection of trans and butch identity! unfortunately, i don't have much else besides that, but i'm going to tag a few people who may have some more stuff that can help you!

RKSignz and LiteraryKitKat, this post is for you! Tumblr won't let me tag you though--either your blogs are too new, or you've got something in your settings making it that way. I dunno which. 🤷 Anyways, here are a bunch of blogs I recommend for various reasons. Take a look, but you obviously don't have to follow everyone.

Will he put a lot of big boy furry erotica art on your dash constantly? Yes, but it's probably good for you. Also he is a true Tumblr institution, gotta get him in your bloodstream before @staff bans him again.

#TBT Elizabeth Levy’s Nice Little Girls (1974) Nice Little Girls (1974), a Delacorte Press publication written by Elizabeth Levy and illustrated by Mordicai Gerstein, explores the challenges of being a tomboy, particularly when boyish behaviors are paired with short hair, overalls, and sneakers that highlight how difficult reading gender can be.

what does butch mean? im not completely sure tbh /genq
Well, please take this all with a grain of salt. i am not butch, though I have had the great experience of knowing many.
A butch, simply put, is someone with a very queer kind of masculinity. Butch seems to be an intersection between gender and sexuality and masculinity, often with the butch having a connection to womanhood and loving women, but not always. Bisexual, asexual, aromantic, and male butches have all existed and exist now; transgender butches exist in all variation.
@genderoutlaws is probably better suited to answer this question, though I do hope this was an alright enough answer.
Edit:
important from the replies: ”I think it's a sort of "Subversive masculinity" often and especially expressed by people who weren't typically allowed to express their unique brand of masculinity.” (via @morsobaby)
“I second this as a butch! And if we're talking about sapphic butches specifically, in sapphic spaces butch is also seen as a sort of social role that implies taking care of and protecting other people, usually women and/or femmes but it can extend beyond that. There's a certain level of chivalry implied in it, and a lot of times it goes hand in hand with the desire to make other people feel safe” (via @theygender )
