Trans Ballister Headcannon and intersectional queer theory thoughts about the movie Nimona
I absolutely ADORE the Nimona movie but as an Autigender, genderqueer, who is specifically somewhere encapsulating genderfluid and trans masc nonbinary lesbian, this movie made me sob.
I related to Nimona so SO MUCH. But due to my love of studying the intersectionallitys of queer struggles as my special interest, i saw a specific headcannon among fans that has my entire heart.
I dont wanna put down anyone elses, i love them all, but i wanted to take a moment to talk about the beautiful lense you could look at queer intersectionality with the Trans Man Ballistar Boldheart headcannon.
I want to be clear i do not mean this in a weird way at all!
I think theres a lot to discuss with how we could view there kingdom as being accepting of gay people (at least a bit more progressed past where we are where there may not be hate crimes or any problems but some people are still terrible homophobs far and few)
But through the eyes of our child Nimona we see that the society only accepts queer folks who are “the good ones” aka constantly repressing little parts of their true self to appease others. The accept gay people and say they are willing to try with binary trans people but the bigotry and outward threat of violence to anything different has kept people in the coset, hiding beautiful, normal, facets of queer joy to be seen as acceptable to the kingdom.
That's why i am so inspired by the headcannon of Ballistar, maybe not openly trans but fully living as himself accepted by doctors and the queen fully at a young age, striving for his best life, with a loving and understanding boyfriend who truly sees him.
Because its him realizing Nimona isnt the enemy, they are just a transgender/shapeshifter child. Much like he doesnt understand shapeshifters at first, he doesn't understand their gender, but you start to see him see Nimona for who she is and love her so much.  This headcannon also makes me think so much about the scene on the sword of Gloreth and the ones right before. After he hurt her Ballistar immediately regretted it. The look in his eyes and the way his hand went weak in shock when he realized he almost threatened her. He sees the fear on her face and it strikes me so much in the headcannon of them both being trans because he realized he was threatening a child, and a queer one like himself who clearly wanted to just be accepted and not hurt. I also want to talk for a moment about the ending with Ambrosius. I may need to make a part two because theres a lot to unpack with ambrosius being a cis gay man who is very supportive of the trans community and having a closeted trans partner. i feel like when the dust settles he would feel so horrible for how much he rejected Nimona in the first place.  GOD I WANNA WRITE A FANFIC ABOUT THEM WORKING TO HEAL THROUGH THIS SHIT

ashes, ashes, we all fall down
a Nimona drabble sequence (four 100 word drabbles and a double drabble) spanning the end of the movie
This'll be the last time someone lets her down.
People have wanted to kill her for a thousand years.
Tonight she's going to let 'em.
Their attacks don't do much. But there's really only way this story should end. (Gloreth's monster knows something about stories.)
If this is going to work, she needs to make herself vulnerable. She creates a gap in the shadows and hopes her (former) friend's sword is big enough to do the job.
Nimona lets out a (final) scream and prepares for the blade.
But then there are hands on her heart.
And she's not alone.
*****
Ballister knows he's not strong enough to physically stop her. Words have never been his forte, but he hopes his words will be enough.
She shifts and staggers but he manages to catch her before she falls. Nimona's singed and exhausted but alive — and he's going to do his best to make sure she stays that way.
She wraps her arms around him and he never wants to let go.
Maybe in a different story that would have been the start of their happily ever after, but he sees the cannon and knows that it's not that kind of kingdom.
*****
She says, "Hey boss, be right back," and she means it. Moments ago Nimona was ready to end everything — and maybe someday she'll feel that way again — but now there's Ballister with his enormous eyes and she needs to be clever enough to save everyone and survive a suicide mission.
Nimona the phoenix breaks the cannon.
It breaks her too.
She expected pain but this hurts almost as much as being called a monster and oh there are so many pieces and all her embers are turning to ash.
(From ash she will be reborn. Or so the stories say.)
*****
The last bit of light flickers out before it reaches his (mechanical) hand and hope dies with it.
He falls to his knees.
There's a familiar touch on his shoulder and he turns to face his comrade-in-arms best friend boyfriend nemesis Ambrosius. And maybe things are complicated, but Ballister can't help collapsing onto his chest. He's vaguely aware of a hand cradling his head before he succumbs to the hurt and exhaustion.
Weeks later, Ballister still gets distracted by flashes of pink and his heart sinks every time.
He wishes Nimona could see all the changes her sacrifice helped inspire.
*****
Nimona isn't and then she (mostly) is — a small speck of ash that found its way home into a familiar evil lair.
He's in some sort of limbo of not-quite-death-but-not-quite-life. Dormant. Nimona supposes that he should be grateful that there was any truth to the stories about phoenixes — certainly more truth than in the story of Gloreth's monster — but it would be nice to know just how this resurrection thing works.
They don't remember ever staying in one shape this long before, but for once it's not itchy. There's peace in the stillness. (Maybe they need the time to just rest.)
One sunny day, the door to the tower finally opens and Ballister lets in the light. And with that, Nimona the speck starts to glow.
Does that mean she can doorbell ditch now?
Apparently she can.
The way Ballister leaps towards the door is adoorable, but then his shoulders slump when no one's there and she feels a bit guilty.
"Hey boss." She can't quite manage a solid form yet, but going from ash to shimmery sparkles is definitely an upgrade. Hopefully, her boss won't freak out too badly.
"Holy shit!"
If you enjoyed this little drabble sequence, you are more than welcome to leave a kudo or comment on AO3.

Im gonna get So much backlash for this but...
Can we please call Nimona Genderfluid please, Please. I love Nimona for being a person/creature/potato who can shift to whatever gender they want.
The scene where Ballister Boldheart like "and now your a boy" and they say "I am today"
THATS IS SUCH A GENDERFLUID MOMENT.
I dont mind if you say NB for them, and I know Trans is a broad term, but god please just let me have this one character.
Cause everytime I think Trans, I picutre someone who has transition and staying a gender, not someone jumping between genders and never staying in one.
I just want to see their label, Genderfluid, so bad, and not the label Trans for them. Please Im begging everyone to please ;-: call them Genderfluid.
I play changeling druid in all my dnd games cause Im Genderfluid man. *sobs harder* I just wanna be happy.
I might also be projecting a bit on my own feelings about lebals cause I saw a post of someone calling her trans. cause I just hate being called anything but what I am, Genderfluid. I hate it when people call me anything other then that, Non-binary is iffy with me, some places on discord force me to take that tag, but I want to be able to express myself. I had to figure myself out for a while and even accept myself at times and I am Genderfluid, that is me. I hate it when people say other wise or try to say I'm Trans or Non Binary cause its an broad/umbrella term. No. I dont care if it is, I like my label, it doesn't confuse people, and it makes me feel like people dont see who I am.
And I dont want this character to be dragged threw that, I know they wont feel that, theyre an animated character but... I want them to be able to have their proper label. I understand headcanon and all that, but this character is a Shapeshifter, a changeling, their gender and body, is always changing depending on their mood. I want to see more fun genderfluid character so badly.
Im sorry Im ranting I just... I need to let it out.

“Did you see the way that little girl looked at me? Kids. Little kids. They grow up believing that they can be a hero if they drive a sword into the heart of anything different. And I’m the monster? I don’t know what’s scarier. The fact that everyone in this kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart or that sometimes I just wanna let ‘em.” “We have to get you out of here. Over the wall. We won’t stop until we find some place safe, okay? We’ll go. Together. No matter what we do, we can’t change the way people see us.” “You changed the way you see me... Didn’t you?
NIMONA (2023), based on the comic by ND Stevenson, who came out as transgender in 2022

Watched Nimona finally, love that lil shit
Yeah so everybody knows this movie is an allegory for people with gender identities that aren't accepted in the greater society, and subsequent suffering those people experience when struggling with that environment. Nobody can look at that movie and say it was just about a monster, come on. There were so many golden lines that could be used word for word about a non-binary or trans person's struggles with their identity and place in the world. The world needs more representation like Nimona 🩷

I just watched Nimona, and for the record, no one told me I would cry. Before the movie, I was like, a shapeshifting girl and her mentor go an adventure and now after the movie I'm shaken.
It felt, oddly, like a warm hug.

Happy Pride everyone! I don’t think I’ve ever spent this much time on an art piece but it was totally worth it for all these amazing canon (and fanon) genderqueer characters!

"No matter what we do, we can't change the way people see us." "You changed the way you see me... didn't you?"
found family and some of the allegory in NIMONA (2023)
